Baron Dashforth and Mr. Scampwick put on a great show in Foul Play with a benchmark battle system taken from the days of Golden Axe and Batman Returns, speeds it up, polishes it, adds an adventure soundtrack and a guy with a monocle and tash.

The whole thing is a stage setting where combos and specials impress the audience, enhancing your ratings for each level/ scene. It's colourful, fast moving, loud, tough in places, humorous and most of all entertaining. I can see why it has average reviews as its replay value is low, as is its variety. But it certainly doesnt take itself too seriously though, and is perfect when you want to switch off and have a button bash.

Foul Play is a 2d scrolling beat ‘em up in the tradition of games like Golden Axe, or more recently Castle Crashers. The set-up, in which Lord Dashforth recalls his exploits of battling the supernatural through a series of plays, allows for some clever gameplay mechanisms and a bit of humour but it can’t cover up for the simple and repetitive gameplay. Very generic combat controls is the first turn off to this game. The worst part about it is that they advertise their "online coop" and their freaking server system has been broke since release!!!! WHAT THE HECK! I tried to write the company and they ignored my request for working servers with zero response.
They will NEVER be receiving money from me (thank god I got this **** on PS+)

There are clear throwbacks to some classic side-scrollers (Turtles in Time, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage)…. but they seem to have missed the point that games have moved on since then.

    A truly classy, inventive game.

It’s a shame that the combat is such a drag because it’s the main part of a game that is overflowing with life and excitement.
