Well, as soon as they have announced remake of 7, I thought this better be great not just good.

Graphically I have no complain. I love to see Tifa and Aerith in flawless motion and Cloud actually speaks. They showed how big Midgar is and what kind of city it is, they have succeeded. At some point I was bit disappoint how meaningless NPCs felt.

Battle system is fun, but I wish summon and limit break bar carries over to next battle. It's only available in one long battle. This is such a disappointment for me. You have to be in control of each character to build ATB or otherwise they sometime just stand there wasting time. I think they could've done better at this.

One huge disappointment was quests. There are lot of sidequest you either skip or do, but some I had to search around not knowing where to go due to lack of information and guidance.
I don't feel like I'm achieving by doing quests. I felt Square was trying to extend play time by adding numerous and meaningless side quests.

Gamers waited 7 years for this such short game(I think about 10~20% of original?).
I don't know what's Square's plan by making this game in numerous series, maybe 3~5?
Maybe take 20 years to complete?
I feel like they made a huge mistake releasing this unfinished game now and make gamers to wait 2~5 years for next one and another for next which I find stupid.

I didn't play the original FF7 and I really love this game (38 hours on normal mode). The graphics and soundtracks and top-notch. Battles are very very good and engaging. I love the mini games too. Towards the ending, the gaming experience is very worth the price of the game! You wouldn't go wrong with this game!

This is honestly the worst final fantasy game I've ever played. It is so bad that I felt the need to make a metacritic account. I'm on chapter 15 out of 18, cursing myself for being too stubborn to just get rid of the game.

Its possible that all the hype made me view it in too favorable a light before going in and I'll give that it was a decent nostalgia trip given that I played the original when I was 8.
    Problems:
For a game that requires so much jumping, just add a jump button. Any dexterous action that is required outside of combat is so tedious that I've found myself screaming "WHO WOULD DESIGN THIS!? WHO MOVES LIKE THAT ON MONKEY BARS!? DAMN YOU STAIRS!"
The combat is alright, but honestly feels like a step back from FFXV. I understand that they were trying to make a combat system that could combine action and jrpg but it honestly feels like they half-assed both and relied on nostalgia for sales. The included "classic" mode is a joke and cant be used in any difficulty above easy, which is laughably simple.
All of the exploration outside of combat is also made exceedingly tedious by the slow movements that seem oddly placed. "Oh, a 6" wide bar is in the way? Let me just spend the next 10 seconds ducking under it even though I was just sprinting"

Pros: the soundtrack is fantastic and revisiting old memories with amazing graphics is pretty cool.

Bottomline: while watching me play, my wife would often say "oh that's so pretty!" well so is a Corpse Flower but that doesnt mean you want to spend 40 hours with one.

Some of the characters like Aerith lack any real substance and gets very annoying quickly with her shallow dialogue. Barrett is a stereo type comic relief character with a lot of obnoxious meat head quotes. Jessie is surprisingly a witty and charming character but her constant affections for Cloud become tiresome. Talking about Cloud he's apparently the biggest chick magnet in Midgar and reeks of being a emotionally broken bad boy.

All that aside FFVII Remake isn't a bad start but it would be nice if the dialogue and combat had a bit more substance in part II of the remake.

I get that. if it's your favorite gaming series, then sure, but if we look at bigger picture, this game is nothing extraordinary. There are more interesting bosses in games like Resident Evil 4, more interesting characters in other games. But that's not me hating this game. Hell no. I actually really like this one, surprisingly i would say. Because i have never really cared for this series, but i have always known that they exist, they just never interested me. But this remake actually made best out of what the original was. Like this is literally best version of that game. This version actually made me care. Characters are not some low-resolution images anymore, but feel like actual characters. Now let's get to the reason why i even made this stupid account to write this actually very important review. There's absolutely nothing i hate more on this planet, than these absolute losers who give this game 0 out of 10 and claim that they have been hardcore fans since 80s and this new one is bad blah blah blah. Just give up. I'm literally telling you, if you are one of these people, just give up gaming, forever. It was same **** with resident evil remake (where's muh fixed camera angles), but it seems to be even worse with FF7 Remake. 8.2? Seriously? It's so obvious some absolute losers have tried to lower this score. But guess what. Nobody cares. Most people seems to like this game and FF16 will be even more action oriented. And no i don't care either. I'm just here telling you that nobody cares about your hate and whining. Because someone needs to say it. If you don't like these new games, that fair. Nobody forces you to play them, but that doesn't mean you just have to leave tons of 0/10 reviews, because it's so obvious that here are many double accounts. You have absolutely no right to ruin other people's fun. Go play your cartoon looking 90s games as much as you want and leave games like FF7Remake and FF16 to people who want actually fleshed out stories, good animations, top level graphics and characters who actually feel alive. Solid game, would recommend. Expand

This combined with the unnecessary dull minigames, which ate also forced takes away every illusion of freedom.
Pairing this with the ATB Action combat the devs chose to go with makes the game a horrendous mess. Action combat itself was a great choice for the remake, as it's Story is action packed with the main group being literal eco-terrorists. However the decision to, yet again, force the ATB into the game ruins the entire immersion. Combat feels like a weird mix between classic rpg and modern hack and slash. But it does not work. Pairing this with the idea that almost every enemy can either disable or stunlock a character and the messy status ailment system made the combat a chore.

FF 7 re is a mess that is plagued by weird and to be honest straight up dumb design choices. And is yet another prime example of SquareSofts biggest flaw. All graphics no substance.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Coming from a long time FF original series fan, this game doesn’t quite add up to the original FF7. First I couldn’t truly connect to the characters as before, plus the music is more “noisy” bkg filler. The gorgeous FF7 soundtrack is lost or barely heard. It only covers Midgar and introduces new characters too quickly. The mystery of Sephiroth is overplayed and much like the movie instead of the game. The story is jumbled or forced and not laid out smoothly or gradually. It’s replay value is ok. But you have to play by chapter not by free form as the original.

Jenovah is fought too soon. It was a climax and surprise to learn of her. Plus you had to go to the meteor crash to find her. It’s like they jumbled the whole game into Midgar at once. No free world exploration.

Oh and Sephiroth was not a one winged angel, he had many wings and was magnificently designed when he transformed. At least that music was close to the original. Oh and I hated that after each battle with main characters none of them actually died. Or most of them.

The fact of trophies and rewards for perfecting scenes or mini games were a bit annoying but this may be the new thing. I liked the logic puzzles and exploration bits to find powerful items not see how good you are at pushing buttons.

The dance at honey bee was fun but really wasn’t my thing. I tried a couple of times to perfect it but it was just not my taste of music or flamboyancy. To each there own. Seeing cloud in a dress was funny like the original. I’m glad they kept that.

I do still like the game but I miss the original feeling of FF7. I cried when “Aeris” died. That’s the emotion I was expecting n this remake. Of course it’s only part of the game but I may not buy the other parts as I assume they’ll only get worse for greed and speed of production through anticipation or lack of funding. That’s only a guess. I’ll wait and see.

The motifs have been destroyed to make it more "modern" sounding. The jukeboxes mess up the atmosphere by introducing music that doesn't fit the scene. 2) graphics are better, of course... but there's a hell of a lot more to a game than graphics. I feel like they dropped the ball. 3) wayyyy too linear. 4) ending was contrived and forced... again, just to say to fans "look this was an exciting ending wasn't it?"... 5) much of the story in this game is straight up FILLER... just for them to says "look, this is worth $60!!!". But it's not QUALITY story like the original. The original was pretty damn close to perfect in terms of story chapter and pacing. 6) 25% of the story seriously just feels like a dating simulator with a love triangle. This was not in the original and its so dumb. 7) way too many cliches.... how many times are they going to show us a character falling off a ledge like they're about to die and then another character swooping in to save them. 1 time is enough (or not at all), but SquareEnix decides to use this cliche probably 10 TIMES!!! Seriously?? 8) they had to add pro-trans "gender is anything you want it to be!!!" propaganda BS that, of course, wasn't in the original.

Ugh.... anyways, it's not bad. I just don't understand why they have to milk it and destroy the soul of the game. Oh wait, I do. It's called money.

And SquareEnix, if you read this, you BETTER not take out the overworld airship flying in the next one or you're going to have a lot of pissed fans. Please, please don't get rid of the airship/overworld and make everything menus and linear BS like every FF since FFX.

An action RPG which is a “remake” of the original Final Fantasy VII, interestingly, not only is it a genre shift from the first game, but the story itself diverges – and the divergence of the story is a major plot point. It expands on the Midgar section of the original game, a section of the game that took about 8 hours to beat, and turns it into a 40-60 hour long game, all while engaging in a few meta plot twists to keep players familiar with the game guessing how much things will change.

Unfortunately, this is the heart of the problem of the game: they didn’t know what to expand on, so they expanded on EVERYTHING, even making up a few new sequences. This makes the good parts even bigger and even better, and results in a few new sequences (like a sequence with the Avalanche sidekicks, who were largely a side note in the original game) which really worked well, and added significant characterization – but the game also expanded on the bad parts, resulting in what were previously brief inter-area travel sequences or mini-dungeons becoming two hours long (or longer!) of endless corridors, and some added dungeons that weren’t even in the original game which added nothing to the game but length.

At its best, it strikes an excellent balance between characterization and humor that was common in 1990s JRPGs, then sort of faded from view. At its worst, it is hours of slogging down corridors and fighting monsters that aren’t very challenging to fight, over and over again.

The best part of this game is the improvements in characterization. Every single character is more interesting, including the random background Avalanche characters, the Shinra characters, and even the random side characters in the Wall Market. Barret in particular ends up with a sort of almost preacher-esque character, which is really fun to see – doubly so because for all of his bravado and being so big and bad, he’s clearly got issues underneath and is putting on a bit of a show. Tifa’s insecurity comes through much more strongly than it did in the original game, and Cloud ends up with significantly more characterization, being both uncertain and putting on a show of being a badass SOLDIER. Aerith’s personality, too, shines through, with her playful mischief being a major highlight – at least, until she ends up becoming the Cetra Waif, which makes her much less interesting and more subdued (and generic).

This goes down to the background Avalanche members, who get a lot more characterization, and thus build more of a connection with the player, as well as the random people in Wall Market, including some new characters, including the sadistic masseuse Madam M, a bit character whose interactions with Cloud are absolutely hilarious.

The introductory sequence, the added characterization for Avalanche members (including a whole chapter that is totally devoted to them), the Aerith meeting all the way through Wall Market, the battle up the pillar to try and defend Sector 7, going up the Shinra building, and the battles at the top of the tower – all of these sequences are improved over the original, and add new context and characterization.

Unfortunately, this is a game with 18 chapters, and in the end, chapters 3, 5, 6, 8, 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, and 17 all contain very significant padding – meaning that over half the chapters in the game contain significant filler content. Worse, chapters 5, 6, 10, 11, 15, and 17 are basically entirely filler, with the only significant events occurring with the boss fights in them (and sometimes, not even then).

This is a huge black mark on the game; it is the quality new story content that draws us in, but the vast amount of filler means that it ends up spaced out. Worse, it weakens the story very significantly; half of the game (chapters 5-7, 10 – 12, and 15-18) are all done under very significant time pressure, but each of these three sequences includes not one but *two* filler chapters, where you basically go through a “dungeon” that is just a bunch of corridors or pseudo-corridors. None of these are interesting, and they just bog down the progress of the game while robbing it of the sense of urgency that the pacing of these parts so desperately need.

Perhaps the saving grace is that the combat of the game is pretty reasonable; while the normal encounters are mostly pretty easy, the game has a few sub-boss type enemies that help mix things up. Moreover, the actual bosses are made much more interesting by the new combat mechanics, and the game is significantly more difficult than the original JRPG – it is not an overly difficult game by any means but the combat is at least interesting.

Overall, I think this game averages out to decent-to-good, but the really good parts are separated by padding.

Overall, the game is entertaining and it's great to see the characters who we loved to show again in today's technology. What made FF7 great is the rich story and characters. Unfortunately, the "remake" did not live up to the same level.

The remake could have stuck to the original story and be one of the greatest modern hits, but they decided to manipulate the story to be 100+ hours longer in order to create several installments. The story was dumbed down the dark and nihilistic side. The characters are too cheerful considering how their situations are.

The people in the slums look too "clean" as they are your usual Starbucks customers rather than what supposed to be laborers who are suffering from bad living conditions living under a huge metal plate covering the sky and inside huts with no lights and rats running everywhere.

Some parts of the cutscenes and dialogs are cringy, like Berret's overreacting over how he cares about Marlene and the anime-like behavior of the girls namely Aerith, Jessie and even Tifa.

The side quests are **** What made FF7 stands above all the other RPGs is putting the player into the action rather than wasting time on fetch quests and "bring me my cats" **** to fill up playtime. None of the sidequests were interesting. They could have invested richer dialouges and side stories to add more interesting characters but they dropped the ball hard time.

There are a lot of levels with 1-2 hours of corridors and one-way routes that are too long they become boring and you just want to finish them ASAP to move on.

The new characters are all cringy and annoying you wish you can hit them hard in the face, especially Johnny who isn't annoying in a funny way.

Finally, the "ghost" thing was a very bad diversion from the original story. As I said before, because the original story is grim and dark, they want to fix it (it's not broken in the first place) by changing the story to a fairytale. I won't proceed more so my review don't spoil it, but the story is going to be a Disney-like franchise where people are happy thereafter.

The game is ranked as "T" for teens, a game which 80% of its fans are now in their mid 30s and older.

The game took too long to be released, and not even the full game too. You can see they used most of FFXV and KH's engine and mechanics so it looks like the game wasn't in production until far later when they reused the existing stack, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

And yet, they nailed it. I am the biggest FF VII fanboy out there, someone who despises dirge of cerberus and a lot of Crisis Core/Advent Children for how it goes against the quality writing and characters of the original game.

But this game somehow managed to meet all of those unrealistic expectations, I was ready to be disappointed, to just be happy I get to explore a 3d Midgar and take in the sights.

They nailed every single character, Aerith, Barret, Tifa, AVALANCHE, everyone is the best they have been in years, perhaps ever.

After XV's atrocious combat feel, getting the battle director for Kingdom Hearts 2 definitely helped this game, feedback on movement and attacks is perfect, it's less an action RPG and more a really smart and fun hybrid of action and regular turn based JRPG, managing ATB and constantly swapping between party members for the right strategies in fights for the new game plus hard mode made a second playthrough even more enthralling than the first. The combat system even in this early stage has so much potential and fun in it.

You'd think with such a controversial ending, and how critical I've been over every compilation of FF VII title that it would bother me a lot, but it really doesn't. Square has earned my trust with this remake, and I stare at the future with a true chidlike wonder at the fact that I don't know what's going to happen next.

But I am unbelievably excited for it, and it's nice to be hopeful for the future of FF VII storytelling once again, I have complete faith in wherever they take the story, as the love and care they poured into every inch of midgar, and the characters inside it, practically leaps off the screen.

I'm really grateful I got to live long enough to experience something I as a child always dreamed of happening, and it somehow meeting that child inside me's hype for it.

So I decided to give this remake a go, thinking it might be made to cater to modern sensibilities… but no. The dialogue is still horribly corny (and full of bizarre non sequiturs), the voice acting is hammy as heck, the characters are hackneyed and 2-dimensional (protagonist of few words, fawning female, jolly fat man, gruff muscle man who’s always shouting…).

I don’t even think the graphics are especially good for a PS4 title, with very repetitive NPC models. And the combat is no longer typical JRPG turn-based, but instead a rather vague and sloppy real-time affair with abysmal camera controls.

I always felt the original was a bit overrated, but I’m stumped as to why this remake got such glowing reviews. Nostalgia is a powerful force, I guess.

If you want to see what a remake should be, check out Bluepoint Games work. They Remade Shadow of the Collosus and Demon Souls. Both of which hold very true to the original games. FFVIIR doesn't resemble the original in any regard what so ever: It's a new game entirely. Calling this pretty abomination a remake is an insult. F*** you, Squeenix.

The weapons are more just for appearances. You can upgrade them anyway you want and automatically learn their abilities. Stealing is useless even if you get it to work where as it originally was required to get some of the best items in the original game. Straight off the bat, I knew that it wasn't going to be the whole game. However, what I didn't know, was how disappointing exploring Midgar would be. Some of the side quests boil down to: Find 3 chocobos that you have to traverse the entire world map for in chapter 14. The world map itself is essentially a long straight linear line with some offshoots to dungeons making it a series of Y-shaped corridors. The quality of the side quests simply doesn't justify the game being Midgar only. Sequences in the original game have been stretched to 30 minutes so you spend more time with your favorite characters that have been brought to life, instead of actually having something meaningful develop plotwise.

Once the nostalgia wears off and you replay it, all of these little moments that were good on the first go, fall short and you just want to get it over with as soon as possible so you can go find that missing item/quest.

Then there is the ending. This is an ending that is so disconnected with the tone of the rest of the remake and the original that I can't even begin to describe the drop in the enjoyment you get going from chapters 17 to 18. This ending fills older fans with worry and confuses newer players. SE either put this in just to get older fans talking (and will loop back to the events of the original just so they can "surprise" the older fans) or they have just majorly changed it for whatever reason. Either way, it's a shocking drop in storywriting and enjoyment compared to the rest of the game. Not only does the story become strange here. The characters they have lovingly built up in the first 35 hours completely change personalities. Aerith becomes a cryptic nonsense spewing prophet and the other characters just accept it and walk into the portal that pops up for the final boss just like that. Suddenly, even though this doesn't fit how shes portrayed in the rest of the game at all, Tifa says she's willing to defy destiny. Cloud doesn't say anything. Barrett, despite just being saved by fate, also agrees to spit in its face. Whether the change itself was good or not, I just cannot believe how badly they messed up the execution.

I don't see how they will build up anything for part 2 anymore. The sephiroth and Aerith in this game are beings who can open dimensional portals like gods at this point of the story already. Our main cast of characters have already fought a literal manifestation of fate. Imagine going from that to the Midgar Zolom in game 2...

Once I reached this ending and replayed the game on chapter select, because of how much of a bad taste the ending left in my mouth, all of the other issues with the games snail-like pacing in some areas become noticeable and I realized that this game was not justified in being Midgar only. I am now also fearful of how many sections they will release it in and how expanding it and adding filler willl lessen the impact of the special moments in the original.

This absolutely horrendous experience is made even worse by the attitudes of the fanboys on the subs and forums discussing this game where any criticism is met with trolling or straw man arguments. Shame on Square-Enix for turning the Final Fantasy Franchise into a joke and shame on the people who support this direction

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've been waiting for this game since a long time. Honestly, I was very pleased when the game was announced in the year 2015.

Although waited long enough for the release but I'm glad I could finally play this game. Cloud, Barret, Tifa and Aerith look really good in this game.

I was a little disappointed when SE announced this game is just midgar only. But I can understand it because the original FF7 had 3 discs.
If it became a full game on PS4, how big it is. And surely it will take a lot of time to make the game.

But even though it is only Midgar, but I think it deserved because its gameplay is long enough about 30-40 hours. The story is different from the original version, but OK.

I think it's a good thing to make the player curious for the next game. Overall this game is very good, soundtrack characters, Environment and others. I even bought a PS4 pro just to play this game.

I apologize if my review hasn't been so good because it's the first time I wrote a review on Metacritic. Thank you very much.

I was honestly quite surprised to see the high score that this game has gotten not just the Critic Review score but also the User Review score both hovering in the 80s

I think a lot of this might have to do with the fact that its a remake of a beloved old game that a lot of people have fond memories off

the reality is though that this game is deeply flawed its rushed this can clearly be observed through the awful and i do mean awful texture work and its clear this is not simply just because unreal engine has texture streaming issues its lazy

the further you go into the game the worse it becomes for example at one point i literally gawked at how terrible it looked i was close to the end of the game and the entire background was just a gigantic flat low resolution jpg...

The environments are frequently reused you will have traversed and seen the same areas multiple times before you reach the end often you have to backtrack through exactly the same areas and you will get lost because the map is useless and everything looks exactly the same

their attempt to hide loading screens fails you usually have to wait for 10 seconds to pull a lever now and then and whenever you come out of a cut scene the character has to stand still for 10 seconds before you can move them often you cannot even run you have to walk at a snails pace as if the main character has pooped his pants i really greatly dislike when a game does this

The game has obvious padding throughout the side quests are nothing but fetch quests what hurts is that they clearly have cared but only in very specific spots the graphics in the boss battles are fantastic

there are some great effect work the main character models looks freaking amazing though everyone else in the game looks like they came out of a ps3 game

I have no idea how anyone could rate this game so highly considering how deeply flawed it is but that is not to say the game is all bad i love the battles i think Square done a great job mixing a tactical sorta feel with action it is almost a perfect hybrid more tactical than final fantasy 15 which was really just an action rpg

Sadly the rpg elements are weak fairly linear choices can be made to improve your weapons sadly there aint many weapons in the game the battles are great fun strategic and action packed but the rpg portion of the game is shallow and linear

The story is really well told there is nothing new here but what is there is done well even about 10 hours of the game are cut scenes and it never slowed down the pace i enjoyed the story and the battles i also liked the bike sections i thought they were cool

But except the battles and story we have non existent jpg elements repeated reused environments backtracking horrible textures and low quality jpgs to fill in for actual graphics if this game was not a remake of a beloved game if it was not part of a big popular franchise i do think a lot more people would be critical about it

This game was rushed that is clear through the entire game it just becomes more and more obvious the more you play playing it for the story and the battles alone is definitely worth it but font expect too much i did not view this game through rose tinted glasses like i suspect a lot of people here did

I have never played final fantasy 7 before but i have played a lot of rpgs and jrpgs

because the battles are so enjoyable and the story is so well executed i would give this game a 6 its saves itself from mediocrity but that is somehow even worse this game actually had potential when you play it you can see how this could have been a 10 out of 10 game

but it has such fundamental flaws littered throughout and poor decision making is a constant red thread throughout the whole experience

And this is personal and not part of my review score but i dislike parts of the art style what is with the 1940s type of aesthetic for cars and character clothing? And why.. why is Tifa wearing plate armor.. it looks ridiculous i get it Square thought when making final fantasy 7 we can just mix our sci fi with our medieval aesthetic and nobody will be left out.. and just threw in the 1940s because why not

    but it often looks ridiculous

So much was done right from music, to the NPCs, to the weapon upgrade system;however, so much was done wrong like camera angles, battles, and cutscenes. If you want to see more in-depth reasons for my rating see my Pro/Con below.

    Pros:

Music: I LOVED the music in most sections. I usually turn video game music off to listen to a podcast or something and I haven't done that once with this game.

NPCs: The sectors felt alive as I went through them. I liked to hear dialog about their lives as I walked past. Also, the little side quests were a nice way to "grind" without it feel like grinding.

Weapon Upgrades: Really nice to customize the characters to support a play style I liked.

    Cons:

Camera Angles: Why were the angles so bad? Why? Half the time I couldn't see where I was fighting or was phasing through other characters during scenes.

Freedom of Movement: Yes, FFVII was a linear game and I expect some of that to return but in a way this was worse than the original. We have the technology now to make it so slow walking through a sector isn't the only way to get to an endpoint. Clearly they can climb, jump, etc. so why not allow that a la Assassins Creed?

Battles: Warning rant/screed ahead. tl;dr: Battles make no sense.

Hitting an enemy who is resistant to physical attack just so I can get enough ATB to use the magic I should be using is annoying. Special abilities I get, but things like magic and items should be available for use anytime. When I am fighting and trying to move away from an enemy who is about to attack, half the time I end up bumping into one of the other party members.

Faces: For the most part the female faces were okay. Not always great but okay. Male faces were always too soft and rounded. They felt out of place when looking at someone like Jesse. It feels like two different art styles got tossed together and whoever did Jesse is the superior artist.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Combat is okay when camera can keep up. Don't even mention the frame rate in areas. Graphics are gorgeous, until you're on the plate looking down on the slums. 7 months later and it still hasn't been patched

The story and setting is fantastic for the first 90% of the game. You're being fleshed into the avalanche plotline and fight, while getting mild flashes of intrigue towards sephiroth, just like the original, then you get to the final couple hours of the game and OH BOY, does it get whack. Sephiroth all of a sudden gets forced to be a final boss. You spend 40 hours plus fighting Shinra, getting emotionally involved, absorbed into the lore, to then be told at the end 'ok, sephiroth bad guy, go kill'

Sephiroth is the villain, I get it, but considering this remake is just up to midgar, there is still a whole two thirds of the original game that would continue to build up the sephiroth fight, but in the remake, I'm expected to care about sephiroth in the last 2 hours, after spending 40 hours battling shinra and enjoying midgar. Just seems tagged on, almost like that ran out of ideas in how they can actually 're-boot' the next game. Most areas are glorified hallways. No where near as bad as ff13, but they have learned to be a bit more discreet about it. Gameplay boils down to 'run forward, squeeze through rubble gap, fight enemy, run forward, destroy item cache's, walk forward, rinse and repeat. EXCEPT, now 5 minute sections of the original game are padded out to last an hour. People will try and say it's fleshed out, but it's just running through bland repetitive dungeons. It's padding, nothing more, nothing less. All in all, as a mega ff7 fan, I thoroughly enjoyed the expanded avalanve Vs shinra plot, the main cast where well voice acted and incredibly likeable, and the combat is a big improvement from ff15, with lovely visuals. The general gameplay and late plotline will inevitably frustrate you, and make you question whether it was even worth playing. Knowing the route the plot is now going down in the second part, I won't be in any rush to play part 2 when it does come out. 7/10

The overall plot for me was intriguing enough to keep playing and really lives up to the title of this game being a REMAKE and not a carbon copy of the original. The highlight for me was visiting Sector 6 where the game really shines and also the jaw dropping finale.

The characters writing for me was below par with overly dramatic lines and cringeworthy dialogue exchanges. This doesn't help by the wooden English acting of some characters, particularly Cloud. The overuse of Sephiroth really makes the character less intimidating and more of a crazy ex that will not leave you alone.

One major flaw of this game is the amount of padding it has. Certain chapters and scenes are excruciatingly drawn out, particularly chapters 4, 6 and a particularly annoying scene in chapter 12.

    The good:
    - Excellent combat system. Never gets boring and is very fluent as well as complex and punishing if you don't pay attention.
    - Great soundtrack. - Detailed character designs (in combat and cut scenes) and overall sharp graphics with very little aliasing. - Good paced story with some nice additions (imo) to the original storyline. The bad: - Terrible voice acting and/or dialogue

    The bad:
    - Terrible voice acting and/or dialogue directing. While the original FF7 was somewhat goofy in it's tone this one is outright hysterical and over the top. Barret in particular is super cringy.
    - Clunky and inaccurate controls when navigating the world. Feels very pre-gen.
    - The environment is poorly textured and looks like a PS3 game that got remastered. It is probably due to the very long development and this does not at all look or feel like a current generation game from 2020.
    - Overly convoluted and poorly explained menus. The leveling system and equipment is rather basic compared to other RPGs (not neccesarily a bad thing) yet navigating it is a chore.

It is mind boggling how this game in almost every aspect is a step down from FFXV that came out 3.5 years prior to this one. And with the insane and very delayed development I highly doubt they will ever release the rest of the episodes.
I did however very much enjoy the game as I am a big fan of the original and the combat was very entertaining so it was easier for me to look through the flaws. For someone who didn't play the PS1 title back then it might not be as easy.

    4. Hit or miss boss battles. Boss fights can be very unenjoyable meat-shields. Bosses often don't do much or take much damage leading to a wet noodle button mashing fight that does not feel satisfying.

Overall mediocre game that I would only recommend to the biggest fans of Final Fantasy. Otherwise it is just a generic action-rpg that does not do anything particularly well.

The best game of 2020 in my opinion.
Gameplay is impeccable, the story is being innovated in this remake, I can't wait for the continuation.
All the dialogues are excellent, the soundtrack is phenomenal, in fact FF VII is the most important game in the franchise, so the project must be along the way, so we will have more news in the reworked history.

The graphics, soundtrack, voice acting is top notch and i loved seeing this my childhood game remade with these amazing graphics. minor spoiler: Some things i didnt like was that i was really hoping that some of the scenes from the original would have been stilll in the game like the part in the original where you get arrested in the shinra building, in this game that part they basically turned it into a tedious dungeon that took awhile to finish, i feel it just drags on some of the dungeons in this game. Overall it was a blast playing this game. Not the best jrpg but dam near one of the best looking ones. Im happy that square remade this classic. Expand

    Think of your favorite game.

Now, let M. Night Shyamalan rewrite the ending. But it's not really the ending, it's only the first arc, which you paid worth a triple A value. They could have fleshed out the story, but they retcon and spoil significant climactic parts of the complete game. Now, it's a reboot with an alternate timeline. This new generation has a knack for deflecting criticism and make it out about failures of pleasing everyone. The requests for a remake were clear: same story, modern graphics.

If your critical review gets enough helpful votes, they take it down. They must be thinking about Square Enix stocks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay is good, smooth and maybe a little repetetive, but overall good. Areas are beautifully crafted but not as dark as the original would’ve suggested. What really drags this game down is the audacity to rip up the foundation of what everyone came to love from the original. The original game deals with heavy terms such as identity and loss(life/death) which are ripped out of the game, everyone survives, nothing matters and apparently Aeris knows way more than she lets on. The game is acting extremely self aware and dont even to attempt to hide its disgust for the original fans by the not so subtle metaphor of the whispers. I dont even want to write about the last part of the game as it was just disrespectful.

This game feels like someone looked at it and thought they could surpass the original, but all they did was destroying the soul of it, so they could persue their own little fanfic.

Tl;dr Director turns FF7 into his personal fanfic and kills off the originals soul.
(Anyone who mentions that this is a sequel should read the title of the game; Remake)

    I would not recommend.

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game we've been waiting for from Square Enix for so long. Atmospheric, interesting and exciting all your attention modern jRPG with an interesting story and spectacular battles. To achieve the ideal, the project only needs more even graphics and all the content from the original release. If you were waiting for a turn-based classic with new graphics you will most likely be disappointed, since the game has changed a lot. Everyone else is happy with the release of the first really powerful single-player release from the internal Square Enix studio for many years. Especially after the failure of Final Fantasy XV.

It’s a return to form that has felt a long time in coming, and what’s even better is that there’s still at least two more games of this quality to come...They can’t mess this up, can they?
