This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This was my first FIFA game (aside from mobile).

The Journey story starts strong, but quickly transforms to a sort of less flexible career mode. Gameplay is a little clunky; players are slow, shots are weak, skill moves are hard to pull off. Missing an element of dynamism present in FIFA mobile 15 (yes, I am a sucker for sweaty goals). If you're looking for a pure soccer SIM, I'd

Fifa 17 is the best fifa regarding gameplay. It has everything closest to real football. Any type of goals are possible in this game. After my great disappointment on Fifa 21, I turned back to older Fifa’s and I liked , enjoy and play Fifa 17. Great game. EA should develop Fifa 22 , taking Fifa 17 as base and improve with authentic faces , leagues and graphics.

The journey mode is a great addition even if it can be corny. The career mode plays much as expected with few changes from previous years. There are some issues though. There are moments (although not as frequent as some make it seem) of scripting. Moments where no matter what you do you cannot get the ball from the AI and your defense turns to Swiss cheese while all your shots go ridiculously wide. However, these don’t usually make you lose unless you are simply out of time. My main gripe is that it seems like in their goal of making these games feel more realistic, they are slowing them down a lot. The players run, turn, and shoot slower. Sometimes it’s frustrating to try to outrun defenders with players who have at least a 20 point sprint speed advantage. That should not be. The negative reviews simply from EA hatred are pointless. Is it even possible to rate this game a 0? A 0 means it’s unplayable (literally, not just it makes you mad) garbage that people need to be arrested for selling. This, regardless of its flaws, is not that, so stop being dramatic. Terrible. That being said, for all the people claiming to be turning to PES in anger, you’ll notice that game is losing licenses left and right. Have fun explaining to your friends why they have to play as Raül Cogba for Man Reds while I play as Paul Pogba of Manchester United. Expand

I have owned f17 for about a month. The graphics are amazing (even though I play on a 720p tv).
It's representation of the sport is spot on along with the gameplay. I have learned some tech and skills irl watching replays. My only problem with the football part is the jaggy keeper animations. They feel too disconnected. Keepers irl do everything in one motion. The is some wait time between parts of gk diving. Also some "realistic" features (like diving) were not added. The journey was good. I haven't completed it yet because at one point cutscenes are few and far between. FUT was compelling when sniping and building the ultimate team.Contracts, even though realistic, kept me away from fut for a while. The extra game modes like skill games and especially practice arena are extremely fun and can hook you in! The licensing is great, unlike pes. The gameplay is great. It has a lot of depth whilst being begginer friendly. Skills are extremely fun and dribbling, passing, shooting and crossing feel realistic and good mechanically. Also the gameplay changes are more than welcome.

The overall pace, good. Playing against AI, you will notice the game is focused on attack rather than defence, if you set the difficulty too high, it can be impossible to take the ball from the AI. Through ball can be very effective, often result in a completely shattered defence.

And yes, I have played most soccer games starting from freaking "Super Soccer" on the SNES, so yes, I do kinda know what I'm talking about when i talk about soccer games.

    let me explain:

The gameplay is terrible. This simply is not how soccer is played. The passes are either way too slow or (if you press L2 to give it a drive) way too hard. For some reason, they also removed the ability to separate assistance on speed and direction. Total manual passing just doesn't work well, when the AI doesn't understand who you#re trying to pass it to in the first place.

Similar issue with shooting mechanics - the majority of shoots that you don't fill the power bar for 2 sec or so barely move 10 feet. This is not some figurative speech either. It literally doesn't move any more than this.

When you try to play physical defence, it simply doesn't work. The rag doll (the body of the player basically ) just lacks "body". It feels as if the opponent is just hitting a liquid and not a full grown man trying too push him off. This is clearly not done by physical engine, but rather a script, where an animation is player if the script says the duel is won physically - it's why you can lose the ball this way, but can't win it the same way if you try.

The Stamina bar depletes way too quickly. Two sprints with Aubameyang and he is basically done for three games. The man played some 40+ games last season, 90 mins each, and sprinted throughout every single game. This forces you to play at a minimal pace and just hold the ball forever and work your way through tediously or by abusing the trick stick, which btw, is needlessly complicated, where the most basic inputs don't even do anything, yet they skipped them and started the most basic moves with complicated inputs.

The new penalty and corner systems are also awful. You just can't drive or curve the balls and it's so needlessly "complicated" to make these very simple things happen.

I feel as if they tried for a full on soccer simulator or something, which went horribly wrong, but they also forgot that a game in real life goes for 90 mins while here, You need the same action to take place in 10 mins. I can't tell you why, but they decided to focus on the slow moving, barely action having part of the game, instead of opportunities, quick passes, counters - the "fun" stuff that gets you up your seat when watching.

I thought PES 17 did a bad job gameplay wise, but FIFA sadly isn't any better this year and you can't edit the sliders to fix some issues, like Stamina - cause they removed that option for no reason really.

So, is there anything good about the game? Yes! The career mode, both manager and player, are well done as always. Transfers are realistic, your tactics mostly work (within the confines of the not so great gameplay I just talked about) and the graphics are quite good for a soccer game. Load times and stuff like that is also quite good. I sadly can't talk about the online part of it all, but the FUT stuff costs a ton of money, which makes this totally unappealing to me anyway.

So, should you get it? No. If you have any previous game in the series, just stick with that. This is, imo, a lot worse than FIFA 15, which was the last FIFA I played, but it is still a better Soccer game overall than PES 17. It isn't worth 20 bucks though. it just isn't.

Don't expect anything but chance when playing. Constant disappointment from EA. I most likely won't stop playing and will continue to buy EA sports games since there is such a following and the fact that no one I know plays PES. But I'm pretty annoyed that the gameplay is still lacking after all these years. After looking at this and seeing the user feedback, it makes me feel a little better that I'm not the only one concerned, but it doesn't look like they're listening.

A completely different mode based around the rise of a young football player transitioning from a kid that kicks ball to a sports superstar. I am quite impressed by what EA delivered here, never thought they would put this much effort into it but they did and it has paid off in many aspects. Next time, they should make statistic tables available so we can see how well the protagonist is playing compared to the rest of the players in the league. Is he top scorer, is he topping the assists table, how many yellow cards has he received etc. Not being able to see Match Facts after a game is completed is nothing but an immature error on EA's part. They should also give the user the option to continue beyond the first season, minus the cut scenes. It feels like all the training is a bit of a waste. Having predetermined attributes like having low FK accuracy regardless of what position you play is also a far-sighted move. Not all strikers in real life are terrible at free kicks. I think a player type on top of being able to choose what position would have sufficed, like a shooter who's shooting stats are better than normal, a target man who's physical and heading stats are better than normal, or a player maker with good passing and vision stats etc. There's already more depth looking at it like this, which would no doubt improve the game mode. I also think the interview triggers and social media reactions need a lot of work, I could score two goals and bag an assist in one game and then the interviewer tells me I got one goal and an assist. If I bag a hat-trick, the reactions on social media are either non-existent or "a goal from" you, "what a player". Significant events that go beyond a goal or an assist such as winning the league or breaking other records aren't highlighted at all by social media. This is extremely unrealistic and requires a lot of tweaking to reflect reality better.

Elsewhere, they announced they were making changes to Career Mode. Having played it, it quite clearly is barely any different from before. No real improvements to be seen here unlike how they portrayed it before the game release. They need to revamp it with some features reminiscent of the older FIFAs, namely FIFA 10 with the ticket pricing and stadium building etc. It's been the same for ages.

In terms of FUT, the new Squad Builder Challenge mode is an excellent addition to the game, as it means that leftover players who otherwise have no use for gameplay can still be used to trade in for the chance (or guaranteed depending on the description of each of these challenges) to obtain better players who are more useful. It also greatly affects the market to a surprisingly large degree, which is always a good thing as it keeps me more on my toes and make the overall experience more challenging, more competitive but ultimately more rewarding.

Gameplay wise, mostly some slight improvements. Moving mechanics are mostly more fluid, FK's can now be adjustable to make them more versatile and ultimately more experimental, although clunky at the moment I'm sure this will improve in the future. Shooting is pretty much the most improved feature in this game, there are so many ways and techniques to shoot the ball and I'd say it's the best feature of the game. There is a lot to be enjoyed with shooting in this FIFA particularly. However, there is without a doubt a button lag problem where your player doesn't respond quick enough when I press the most important buttons in pass, move and shoot. I understand that this is a meant to be a stroke of realism as no one reacts to balls or situations instantly but the amount of time it takes for basic functions to be completed is utterly ridiculous sometimes. First time shooting for instance is awful in this game. Fouls are also the worst they've ever been, they allow defenders to shove attacking opposition off the ball despite not getting the ball at all while doing so and allowing their teammates to pick up the ball. There is a difference between shielding the ball - which is legal - and shoving the opponent off completely while they're running or dribbling. EA clearly haven't got the distinction right here. Through balls are also dodgy at times when my players ignore great balls at times. It's way too easy to overshoot them too.

Arena is also completely broken now. I cannot choose players outside the starting XI for any club to perhaps test them out for the Player Pro Career mode. They've removed Set Piece training and Practice Matches. Free kicks within the arena are also completely broken, you cannot move the player normally to aim at all.

Other than that, it is a decent to good game. As always with games like FIFA, they can be really frustrating at times but I feel that EA have done a decent job on the game as a whole.

The singleplayer has seen some improvements, but is still rather lackluster for a game in this day and age. The career mode AI makes either very weird or very scripted decisions. At times you still arbitrarily lose games where the AI concedes about 20 shots but still manages to keep a clean sheet and score with their only shot from 45 yards out. The Journey is alright, but it's very scripted and repetitive, making it a one time experience with no replayability. All in all, for a game that is so very focused on multiplayer, for a game that is trying to have a competitive scene, it does really poorly on the multiplayer front. The rather archaic singleplayer cant really save the day for FIFA 17. We can only hope EA realizes the many flaws this game has, and learns for them regarding FIFA 18. Expand

    4) Variety of goals you can score is good and the ball physics are pretty spot on.
    5) I enjoyed The Journey - I wish it was longer, maybe even over the course of a career. It feels too short but it was interesting, if they expand on it it could be the first sports game/RPG for some time.

    The con's:

    1) Strength is just overpowered - players are free to shoulder charge you off the ball with no punishment - this becomes a much bigger issue on higher difficulties and online
    2) Bad AI. In short EA is just too lazy to develop decent AI and, instead, just makes players perform way beyond there stats i.e. slow defenders catch up to 99 pace/speed players with ease.
    3) Offline mode. Clearly this has been abandoned for years now - same title screens, same formula. complete lack of depth in terms of developing youngsters and having an academy, an utterly useless addition of 'controlling your budget' which basically is the same choose ratio of wages & spends. All in all it feels exactly like '15 and '16 - not good enough,
    4) There are still issues over passing - the amount of times a pass will go to the exact player you do not want it to go to is ludicrous, it is so ham fisted and really detracts from the game.
    5) Career mode - same old problems - players randomly deciding they want to leave (usually your best players) - negotiations being very very basic (it doesnt have to be champ manager level but it could have a little more sophistication) - other teams just being terrible (2/3's of the way through a season and the 2nd place team has like 38 points its just stupid, make the good teams more competitive so I have so worry about actually losing a game. The list is endless for career mode honestly.

In short my gripe is that, for a 'new' game, I expect new additions and features. The only new addition that stands out is The Journey - everything else is just Fifa 15 & 16. The offline play has had literally zero attention paid to it and we all know why: FUT. I know this is popular, and I know EA make some serious money off of this, but it is not for everyone. The offline game should be the basis of the game not some after thought but, with Fifa, it is. For me I wish I would have got a refund when I had the chance and just kept playing Fifa 16, honestly the differences offline are so small it would make little to no difference. The game, in itself, if you ignore the previous titles, is probably a 6 or a 7 if your being very generous but it's the complete lack of progress in the series that really grates - Fifa focuses all its effort on FUT and the rest of the game suffers. They are milking the cash cow and it makes players, at least it makes me, feel ripped off. I really don't think I'll buy Fifa 18 unless large scale changes to offline mode are made - if they don't I can just keep play '17: if offline play is your thing I would choose another game as Fifa 17 just cannot cut it.

Passes always end up in the feet of the wrong player, defenders are not doing their job and tactical play is not being rewarded at all. I don't understand why EA doesn't focus more on the gameplay instead of the licenses and graphics.

My son liked it anyway so we kept playing and I tried to keep my frustrations to myself. I had no fun playing this game whatsoever and I can't wait untill someone will make a good football game that is both realistic and fun to play. In the meantime I will enjoy a few games of PES 17 or (if I can convince my son to play on a console from the stone ages) PES 2 on the PlayStation 2, in my opinion still the best football game ever.

Playing this game offline is horrible! When playing online, you can enjoy it better but at times, this game seems very scripted. Its not just only about the visuals, although they are far better than previous Fifa games, nevertheless, the gameplay isn't great at all.

FIFA 17 is one of the best franchise games of EA sports. Second is the Brazilian league, they don't give a f*** to Brazil teams. It all boils down that FIFA 17 is a great game with small mistakes that could be fixed. Expand

Fifa 17 is most likely a well known game by now. Made by EA games and their other

successful games like Madden, 2K, and lots of other sporting games. Knowing that Fifa 17 was

one of my most wanted games, released in September 27, 2016 Fifa 17 obviously had lots of

    work put into it.

Fifa 17, a game where you can dribble around players in quick matches, shoot against a

CPU in penalty kicks. The game has lots of extra features to keep you entertained. However,

the game can get tedious and boring, also sometimes quite easy. The multiplayer is brilliant but

if you are playing other than a 1v1 it can get very annoying, it gets hard to set up shots with a

player and the passing mechanics in the multiplayer stage. In career mode you get most of the

soccer experience rising to fame and fortune. The mechanics of the game are quite simple, one

of my only wishes though is for them to make the skills better and easier to use against the

cpus. The graphics were very well taken care of and the makers obviously tried hard to make

    this game.

The game is meant for anyone and everyone who likes soccer or any sport games in

general. Most critics and game specialists give the game a 4/5 however my personal opinion is

4.5/5 for the games attention to detail, design, and the fact that dribbling around soccer stars is

fun. The well known soccer game Fifa has been here for generations for many soccer fans to

    enjoy.

Worst Fifa ever I played( I play it starting from 2008 ). When I play online this game I get a nervous shock, really.
    1. Game pics for me an opponents with very slow connection every third game, I think the game should not allow people with slow connection play it. Slow connection means that game goes on rally unacceptable speed, just unplayable.

    2. Scrypted gameplay. Yes the computer chooses who will win the game, not your skills. I just broke my controller while playing this awful game, concedering an unreal goal.
    3. EA not fixing these after all negative reviews, I know many players, who hate this game link me and EA really don't care. They selling the same game for 4 years while under different names.
I write this after playing Fifa 17 very long time,
If you want to buy this you must know that you can't get anything good. Just nervous shocks.
This is a garbage and not cost its money.

FIFA 17 have a really cool campaign (The Journey) that a whole new experience to all FIFA fans! The FUT is really cool with some differences from FIFA 16, but is still one of the greatest FIFA 17's strongests points, and brings more women teams than before, with a whole new experience with the women world cup.

The problem of this game is that there's not a really big different from FIFA 16, and on some points it's even worse than it's predecessor, like on the CPU's AI that is a few easier than before. The game also have a bad problem with bugs and glitches, that happens oftentimes. One of the most annoying problems is with the called "hand balls", which should be one really cool and interesting thing become one of the greatest problem about "glitches" on this game.

OFTEN, i'll repeat, OFTEN when i was playing with the handball activated, corners and crossings on the penalty area resulted in PENALTIES, because one of mine (or of the other team) was jumping to head the ball it jumps with the hands raised... and guess what? Yeah, penalty... and talking about that, the new penalty system is really unnecessary and hard to learn.

FIFA 17 also have a problem with the leagues and licenses, ok it's still have more teams than it's competitor (PES 2017) but the game do not have the same immersion that the rival. On this game, we also have problems with the Brazilian league, and the national teams (that have just a few national teams, much less than PES), that harms the immersion on the game.

Besides that, FIFA 17 is still a really cool game, it's still a great football game, but it's a little step back on the Franchise, that's maybe can be bad if EA Sports don't do anything to bring new stuff to the game (and good for Konami)

Shame; with all the promises of Frostbite and smoother game-play, Fifa 17 is still Fifa 13 with Little textures.
It really has not advanced for the game-play when the players still turn like boats. You can still feel the momentum overpowering the game-play to. Shame.

With much-needed tweaks in visuals and gameplay, some improvements in the career mode and the addition of the Journey Mode, FIFA 17 has retained its place as the best football simulator available on the market.

The story mode (this year’s biggest selling point) is not perfect, but I was surprised how much I was invested in this idealized adventure every little boy dreams of while playing football with his pals. None other mode in FIFA or PES provides such experience. In all other departments – licenses, visuals, sound, atmosphere – the new FIFA is as strong as ever. [12/2016, p.67]
