Do not bother with this game. My last and only review here review was about Fifa 15. What has changed?A lot, but for the worse. The game is broken and if i lived somewhere in USA i would file a lawsuit against EA for lost nerves. The gameplay is as abysmal as it gets - players do not defend, miss wide open shots and etc. But the most disgusting feature of them all is the Ultimate Team. I have easily cruised past few divisions with a mediocre team, but then it all started to change. I have purchase very good players such as Benzema and started losing by 3-4 goals with chemistry being 100. So my point here is, the UT is flooded with scripting so that when you do well, you get penalised so you would buy the coins for better players. Fanboys would neglect it but i am a casual player - why would i spend money on a game i have already paid for. So here you have it - the developer is already cheating on us players. But apart from that, he gameplay is as bad as it can be, the defenders crash into each other, you cant make 3 straight successful passes. I have played FIFA games since 2000 and they were good up until 2008-09, after that it got worse. DO NOT BUY, consider yourself warned. Expand

I can honestly say ive never played a more broken game in my life. ever.
    Its unplayable.
I actually had to triple check to see if i had missed a patch or something. Where to start.... FUT has terrible lag (that happens WAY too often), that can delay players movements so badly that it can cause your GK to score a home goal. and im not alone on this, it seems to be quite an issue

    Where to start....
FUT has terrible lag (that happens WAY too often), that can delay players movements so badly that it can cause your GK to score a home goal. and im not alone on this, it seems to be quite an issue judging by many online comments.

The scripting (in offline in particular) is unbearable and has become ridiculous and literally predictable. You can go from defeating a legendary 4 star team 2-0, to losing an infuriating game against professional 2 star team 3-0 (usually in a defining game).

When the momentum goes against you its like your trying to steer a tanker through quick sand, whilst the AI or your opponent seem to run and turn seamlessly, and if by pure fluky chance you do get a break, the AI will catch up to your 90+ pace player and just as youre about to shoot it will do the most amazing tackle from behind that not only stops your shot and potential goal, and not only trips your player to the ground (with out getting a red card)...but also INJURES YOUR PLAYER! And this sort of thing happens *all-the-time*

The scripting in FUT can also be annoying especially when at the end of the game your stats tell a very different story to the score (13 shots, 11 on target vs 2 shots 1 on target...score: 0-1). This happens WAY too often.

One of my personal pet hates is the "change player" button issue, where it wont give you the correct player until its too late (opponent makes a run, you hit the change player button and it keeps clicking on to a CM behind your opponent rather than the CB in front of your opponent. THIS is the worst, and is just another clear sign of a broken game.

This game is infuriating, not fun and judging by the hundreds if not thousands of comments and videos of enraged FIFA 17 players (some people posting video of themselves breaking the disk) this game is not worth one red cent of your money, nor one iota of your time.

Dont do it. I wish I hadnt.

Inability to call second defender to tackle combined with the changes to shielding the ball, mean it's impossible to win possession off someone unless they make a poor pass.

Still the same feeling of RNG when it comes to shots, headers (particularly corners) and through balls.

Seems to be greater delay, also some of the new animations are horribly implemented, e.g. on crosses, a player without any time or space will stop go back 3 steps and try to take it as a spot kick.

Online is a mess. No ability to see ping of opponents or to filter opponents based on connection.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. this game is so poorly programmed, it should be banned from stores. So many things not working correctly, every game mode plays different in some way, bugs as hell. A few examples, sometimes the ball is in the air for about 5 seconds, but you don´t get a play to do a header, you check the controls, "change player- mid air"...but doesn´t work. The Momentum is a joke, and EA says there is no momentum, which now has been prooven. The physics are bad, we had 2006 better pyhsics simulator as fifa. And every time i saw the "dab" in fifa, i think it´s just one huge joke. Graphics are bad, Menus are all different, in this menu you need this button, in the next one for the some function another one....Arenas, fans look like PS2, all wearing the same jersey and doing the same moves...hilarious. Some player look "realistic" ok...but the overall graphics....bad. Even other EA sports games have better graphics...referee is a joke, no good AI at all. Neither do your teammates. You attack, opponent takes ball away and your midfielder rushing 2 steps next to the opposing player right into the box, expecting a pass or crossing :D hilarious. This "game" is pure slapstick and shouldnt be taken serious at all. Yes i play Fifa for years, also this one. It´s horrible. Homefront 2 is a technical revolution compared to it. Expand

They have also added the managers which is a little change but very effective. They have also added a new game mode called ‘my jorney’ it’s a bit like a campaign mode which they never had. You have to be a boy called hunter. You start when he was a boy and work your way up to the top teams, you have to fight for your place in the team which is very exciting. They have added extreme detail in this as you can even see the players get changed in the changing rooms to flying in a aeroplane to different countries to vs different teams. 'The Journey' is stolen from the 2KSports NBA franchise, but executed much more poorly. My main complaints were that the gameplay in this mode is just awful, with the AI trying so hard to get you the ball all the time that almost every game ends up 0-0, and players miss open goals if you didn't provide the ball for them, but can score much harder goals if you do. If you're an experienced player you'll just be frustrated with how poor the AI is, and if you're a newbie you'll probably just be confused why it plays nothing like real football. I was also disappointed that 'The Journey' ends after only a season, with nothing to do other than pick up an FUT card for your player (useless for me as I don't play FUT).

The career mode is likewise disappointing. EA Sports tried to add some extra depth with seasonal career objectives, but these are (like the season goals from previous games) poorly aligned with your club's status or previous performance. Do well one season, and the next season (without your budget increasing) you'll be expected to win everything, oh and also stop your player wages increasing. The youth player goals (e.g. get 5 players to improve by 10 points in a year) are particularly frustrating - you spend the whole season training just those players to improve their stats, then next year those players get nothing while you do it all over again with new players. I felt like I spent too much of my time training players, scouting players and desperately trying to sell players and not enough time actually playing. Taking corners and free kicks (unless you're shooting) I find very confusing, there are so many controls that don't seem to do much.

On the positive side, I do like the preseason tournaments, and I have felt that the free kick taking is more balanced this year than any previous FIFA game I've played.

In terms of the gameplay in game, I've found the controls to be slightly sluggish, but also confusing in this game too. Previously controls were set up so something like a quick feint or turn was easy, but these are now much more difficult to pull off, as a result, embarassing dribbling errors happen all the time. My brother and I had a long discussion about how awful the penalties are: any penalty system where you can easily send the ball off at 90 degrees from the player is poorly designed. The whole idea of penalties is that they are scored more often than not.

I struggled to learn FIFA15, but it was fairly enjoyable once I mastered it. FIFA17 though, I played one season of 'The Journey' and one season in career mode, and I'm done. Perhaps FIFA will return to being a fun game eventually, but not this year.

Defending : 4/10 You can win the ball through interceptions and occasional slide tackles, but thats it. Defenders are all over the place. Slide tackles dont work, and if they do, its most probably a foul and a booking. Only way to win a tackle is a standing tackle near the throw in line where it just goes out for a throw for the opponent. Overall, its just really bad.

Goalkeeping : 3/10 The AI keeper seems to always be on form, and always makes ridiculous save after save. Not realistic at all. Your keeper on the other hand, either plays really well, or is asleep. No in between. Its been this way for the past few games now.

Referees : 1/10 Worst referees ever in FIFA history. They foul and book perfect tackles and let the bad ones go. Always too quick to book players, never book them when they have to. Overall, they are horrendous.

My Career Mode - Manager : 6/10 Pretty much the same thing except with objectives added. Still no real financial control. Options as to what you can do are very limited, and it can get boring really quickly.

My Career Mode - Player : 4/10 Even less options than manager mode. Also, players always get subbed off regardless of position, stamina, form or performance in the match. Fans have been wanting that to change for years, EA still not bothered. Can never seem to stick to the mode for too long because of this.

My Journey : 6/10 One of the better things about the game. Only issue is how it tends to not make sense. You could be in great form, banging them in, have a better return than your rival, and STILL you will get sent on loan. And the loan period is pointless as it achieves literally nothing and just drags on with no story. More content and more things to do would be nice. Also, there needs to be an option to customise how you want your player to look like.

Overall, just two good things about this game, the attack and My Journey which was a good change from regular FIFA games. But everything else is either the same, or worst than last year. The scripting handicaps you, most goals come at 45th or the 90th minute mark. You could have 15 shots on target, wont matter cause more often than not, AI goalies are unbeatable and AI scores with their first shot after being dominated for 90% of the game. This is overall just the same game with a few add ons. Many bugs and glitches. Once again, this is classic EA, not bothering with what their customers say.

I didnt rate Ultimate Team cause I just dont bother with it.

Ive been a long time FIFA player since FIFA 98. And EA is clearly lazy with the game and puts in no effort in the offline mode anymore. Its catering to its Ultimate Team fan base, and have forgotten the people who got them where they are.

Even if the connection indicator says that the connection is good and stable, it might just not be the case. I haven't gathered the data, but it feels like 60-70% of all the matches are laggy and/or there is a button delay. This is not acceptable from a competitive gaming perspective.

The player changing are just as horrible as the matchmaking. When defending a counter attack it's down to sheer luck if you get the right player.

When I'm winning I feel like I can never connect any passes and my goalie is just short of stupid in late game situations. When I want to "park the bus" I feel really vulnerable and it doesn't seem to go as planned. Also, there have been too many times I have given up a goal in the 45th or 90th minute because of a breakdown defensively that I have no control over. That part of the game has seemed to carry over through the past couple years.

There are a couple things that I did notice a change in and that is the on the ball dribbling, free kicks/corners, and penalty kicks. I feel like i have more control dribbling the ball through the midfield and can connect my tricks with little no problems at all. As for free kicks, I like that you can change your angle of striking the ball. I think this gives you an advantage to be able to bend the ball a certain way. Plus, it makes me feel like I have more control of what's going on. I really like the new corner kicks because you can now control where the ball ends up and how it gets there. Whether that be through a high lob or a low liner with the right amount of bend to catch the goalie off-guard. Lastly, penalty kicks are the worst change I have ever seen. In my opinion, a pk should be an automatic goal, with the change they have taken that completely out of the game. It is more difficult to get down and I don't feel as confident when I'm awarded a pk in a game. I've lost games because of it.

One last little bit, they have done a great job with the goal celebrations over the past couple years and I think there's something to be said for that. I always like to "dab" on my haters when I score.
All-in-all, I like playing this game and I will continue to support Fifa as they continue to make these games. I just think that they still need to clean up a couple aspects of it and it will be gravy.

I was always a fifa player and had stopped playing pro evolution in 2005-2006 but the new pro evo blows this ordinary fifa out of the water in terms of gameplay. If pro evo had the licensing rights fifa wouldn't even get a look in. Also the journey is terrible, it's just career mode/training with a bad cutscene every now and then, they made it look so good in the trailers but it's very boring, might be good in a few years time when they put some effort into it, but for now it is repetitive and boring. I would give this one a miss or try pro evo instead this year if you really want a football game. Expand

simply put, this the best, most smooth soccer (football) game ive ever played. the graphics are great, the gameplay is great, and the atmosphere in-game is second to none. plus, unlike some other soccer games, this games has all teams officially licensed, which really adds to the immersion in the game.

Year after year same problems, same poor gameplay, same schematics and scripts.
Fifa 13 was last good game from EA.
I' m so happy that I've switched to PES last year.
This year was the first one when I didn't buy fifa by default.
I've played the demo and got back to PES.

A downgrade from FIFA 16 in a lot of ways without adding much new. The lack of UEFA license and therefore Champions' and Europe Leagues also really hurts the game for newcomers to the series or soccer genre.

    Average soccer game at best.

FIFA17 is unlike any FIFA before. I've been playing the series for years. I'm 36 years old. I play on Legendary Mode. We all know, deep down, that buying FIFA every year is a bit like being in an abusive relationship, where we are punched in the face regularly but never leave,FIFA17 is unlike any FIFA before. I've been playing the series for years. I'm 36 years old. I play on Legendary Mode. I say this not to flop my manhood onto the table to compare girth and pubic quantity, it’s said only to be clear. We all know, deep down, that buying FIFA every year is a bit like being in an abusive relationship, where we are punched in the face regularly but never leave, telling our friends and PES players that they don’t understand EA, that deep down they love us really, that EA are just insecure, and still trying to get over the hand job we gave cousin Thomas at the family summer BBQ in ’98.

I was excited about Journey Mode. And for a 36-year-old to get excited about anything is a difficult thing; someone in their mid-thirties is a cynic, we’ve reached that age where our dreams have been swallowed by the inevitable rise of responsibility, and burped back out by the failure of our aging digestive systems to stomach anything remotely next-gen. And it was good to feel alive again for a few moments. I waited by the front door for the delivery. It was like Christmas, for a while. Or waiting for the birth of my first child, only less bloody and more neatly packaged, with a menu that made sense. But then you get the game out of the box, and like with every FIFA and having a child, you have to wrestle with expectation vs. reality. Expectation as in ‘this is the one’ meets the reality of ‘this isn’t the one, this is just another one night stand that’s turned into a relationship with an evil insecure elephant I have no hope of escaping.’

After spending quite a few hours on Journey Mode, a few things are clear. It doesn’t matter what you do as the player, the game has a storyline and the storyline is going to happen. Score a hat-trick in all of your games in the beginning and you are still going to get loaned out at the same point as someone who threw a poo at a disabled child sitting in the front row of a home match. Play badly when you are meant to play well, and your rating won’t go down, and it will leap up to a 9 for making a simple pass. FIFA says ‘control your own destiny’ but it’s just you being controlled to think you are in control of your own destiny. And it irks. But still, I was enjoying it. I was thinking it’s all fixed, but who cares? I could see plenty of hours being spent playing a career with Alex Hunter (letting us edit our own player at this point would have been nice, but then that wouldn’t have been like EA), then becoming a manager etc. But, nope, I soon find out you can only play the Journey for one season. ONE SEASON?! What is the point?! Ah, FIFA, at this point I want to pick my teeth off the floor, and move into Sarah’s house until the divorce goes through. You can keep the house, the car. I don’t care anymore. OK, I want the ‘I love you forever’ bear I got you after 1993, but you can keep the rest.

But, OK, there is still be a pro, career mode, playing online. But I’ve played career mode – why is the menu screen so slow? Sometimes the loading screen starts up and you can’t move the player, and now the game itself is so structure and dull. Every team plays the same way – get the ball, keep possession in front of the keeper, make little triangles. How come every game is 0-0 or 1-0? When it rains, what is with the odd glitchy thing that’s meant to be rain but looks like static? And even when it doesn't rain, what's with the glitchy specs at the bottom of the screen? Players start runs and stop, to score you have to tap the button, and if you hold it down to what feels right, the blazes over the bar. Goalkeepers are unbelievable and every player passes like Doug Henderson - my mate who played with me for Pheonix in the mid-nineties. Dave could drink anyone under the table, but he couldn't make a straight pass to an elephant in a lift.

It doesn't matter if you ask all of your players to get in the box for crosses in the tactics screen, they won't - FIFA will leave a striker as CB, and move the CB up to the edge of the box.

My favourite football playing memory on Playstation was on the PES, Beckham played a long 40-yard ball and before it bounced Michael Owen volleyed the ball into the top right-hand corner. Despite years of FIFA, nothing has ever felt as superb as that moment. And I think that was 1999. I think this tells it’s own story; I’ve been hoodwinked by the bright lights and the sounds, but a few days into #FIFA17 and I yearn for gameplay.

This is the first FIFA where I’ve thought I’m probably going to back to PES. I know I should go back to PES. But even as I type this, even after knowing that EA are a piss-take, and they are never going to give us a complete game, even after all this, part of me deep down is still thinking I might buy FIFA18.

And that’s FIFA’s real magic, it’s not that they have accurately captured the magic of football, it’s that after 17 attempts, they have still deliberately not captured it, and yet I keep coming back for more.

Frostbite graphics argument of EA is a pure joke, the game looks ugly concerning the details and environment around the field.

The new french commentary is boring and rarely says something interesting, and note that the audio mixing is catastrophic, you will have to go into settings to ear the french commentators properly.

New journey mode is scripted and is very short, another joke argument of EA.
Pro Clubs mode is slightly improved but the changes are too minor, if not useless ingame. Same for career mode.
FUT mode also suffers from scripting, at certain times your players will fail to make any good pass or shot, no matter if they are 75 or 89 rated. It often happens that the best gamer of an online match looses because of scripting. And yes, everything in this mode is still related to money, it may explain some things.

So to resume, gameplay and scripting are the big problems of this game. No detailed analysis here, but even passing doesn't feel as it should in a true good football game.
That being said, there is a lot of content in this game, but it is only an updated content mostly. And we can't enjoy it because of bad gameplay.

New features in pro, ultimate, and career are also very nice and works well, but it is all about the gameplay and here the game falls completely apart. I've been playing FIFA since FIFA 05, and a must say this is the worst effort I've ever seen. The gameplay is just horribly, the defending has gotten even worse since last year, dribling has been ruined, passing is outrageously poor, finishing is extremely inconsistent, and shifting between players while in defence is so bad that you would think they intentionally tried to mess with it.

Overall I really cannot recommend buying this. PES has less features but a much better gameplay, so go with that instead of this sorry excuse for a game.

First off, this game has loads of potential to be wonderful, and yet somehow EA have produced the single worst, most insufferable single player mode in FUT I've ever played. In truth, this isn't totally surprising since anyone who played FIFA 16 probably remembers the absurdity of playing on world class difficulty. Well this year, be prepared to face CPU opponents who play shockingly oppressive superhuman defenses: CPU players are always perfectly positioned; they don't fall for any skill move or trick; they can intercept every pass; they can block every shot; and CPU player is faster, stronger, has better reflexes, and so forth, than all of your players (even if you have top players and the CPU opponent is a fourth tier English side). But best of all, the CPU NEVER gets called for a foul. Defenders will steam roll your players, obstruct you up and down the pitch, slide in from everywhere, and they will not be called for a foul. I've played over 60 offline matches and been awarded two direct free kicks, and the CPU wasn't even called for a single foul during the last two offline seasons I completed (that's 20 matches). Meanwhile if you breathe on a CPU player the ref will blow the whistle. It's just absurd and reflective of totally unbalanced gameplay. It's unfortunate because the graphics are nice and other modes like pro clubs are good fun. But the offline gameplay in UT continues a pronounced downward trend this year. It's really almost like the developers have gone out of their way to strip most of the fun out of single player in UT. But, if your thing is 0-0 scores with maybe 1 or 2 shots on goal the entire match and the CPU getting a ton of ridiculous tackles and no fouls, then you'll probably love playing the CPU in FIFA 17 UT. It's possible they'll recalibrate the offline play after the first patch, but you just never know with EA. Expand

Same goes for passing. Messi and Ronaldo can't pass, but the opponent's fellaini can pass from one side of the field to the other side. Messi can't control the ball, etc etc. Very obvious and it makes the game VERY frustrating and less enjoyable. If you talk about this on the fifa forums you'll get banned. It's rather pathetic.

Want a good review, look at the magazines reviews.. the user's reviews are completely biased on their game choice (aka PES 2017), they probably just tried the demo and thus, they commit to review a game that they even didn't even purchased.

Based on these few days since i bought it, the gameplay seems a bit messy, the cutscenes in the game are kinda messy too (i'm refering to the faults, complaints, cards, players rambling etc) fast paced and slow movements at the same time, some of them do not seem natural at all, i don't know if it's the new engine mode.

The gameplay is fuzzy sometimes, gkeepers look at the ball, while it enters to goal, they just stand there watching it.. sometimes, it feels like it's not responsive in every way. It may be me, or still i need to get used to it. The interface, it's the same as Fifa16, which is.. i don't know.. a diferent interactive UI based menu would be nice.. but i don't know.. maybe it can't be more interactive than the previous one, i can't say because i'm not a designer.

But it's a very good game though, some good improvements as players motion in the field with or w/out the ball in beetween many things that improved too, awesome graphics and very good sound effects in field.. but still alot of work to do (patches and updates).. and please.. fix Renato Sanches face.. is it about licensing? If not.. c'mon..

This fifa is definitely better than the last few that came out, some of the annoying things that made fifa 16 annoying, such as manually chaining minimum price on the transfer market has been made easier with a simple button command. Dribbling is also better...BUT goal keepers are still crap in this game!

This improvement is really appreciated given how messy it could have been if they stick the previous year system.
Sadly, however, fifa 17 still suffer from feeling of playing and arcade game of football instead of real life simulation football because of one aspect of the game, that is in my view, the finishing. I have played every installment of fifa since 2013 to 2017, and fifa 17 is the easiest in term of scoring goals from seasons online and FUT that I have played. Crossing to the box often result in player succesfully head the ball, to the net, running to the corner of the field with bale and pass it to the box almost everytime result in player in the box receiving it and easily score a simple tap-in goal, and the far post as well as the low-shot finish is very OP.
The goalkeeper doesn't help either, compared to last year, goalkeeper is nerfed to make it more realistic to a real life situation. This, unfortunately, also make the keeper too easy to score against and also sometimes there is a situation where the goalie just do not know what to do if the defender is trying to tackle the ball inside the box from the opponent.
Compared to pes 17, as I own both, gameplay of pes is alot smoother, the finishing as well as the goalkeeper is also better. From this gameplay experience, fifa still have some aspect of the game that lacks the good football simulation.

I usually don't buy games on launch day, especially on FIFA cause I don't think it's is worth 60$, but I did it with this one cause I won't do it with the 18 19 or even 20 iteration. FIFA 17 is worth the buy, at least for me coming from the 2 years old FIFA 15, but if you come from the last year one I don't think you'll be disappointed.

FIFA is back with another year for more football (soccer), but this time it has been powered by the Frostbite engine. Does this make a difference to the game and does the all new journey mode hold its ground in the FIFA franchise? Let’s find out.
FIFA has risen to the surface again, with an all-new look and new mode. This year's installment of the franchise has been designed with the Frostbite engine to allow for the story-driven journey mode. You play as Alex Hunter, a little kid playing pick-up games in a Sunday league in London, England. Time skips forward seven years, to when you are about to try out for one of the twenty premier league teams.
Once you get a grade high enough to make the team you choose which team you want to be a part of. You start off as a substitute; before each game you do some training and depending on how you perform that can determine if you are going to be starting or sitting on the bench. As you play through a few games you get bumped down into another league. Doing well in the lower league will get you called back up to the premier league. Throughout the journey, the way you respond to people can have an effect on you: if you answer a question with a cocky attitude, your followers will go up but the relationship with your manager will go down, if you answer a question cool the manager relationship will go up but the followers will go down. The way you respond to your team mates can also affect your relationship with them off and on the field. Through the course of your journey, you will see your stats increase and sponsorship deals come in as you reach a certain amount of social media followers.
All the modes from previous installments of FIFA are there, from season mode all the way to ultimate team. FIFA has done a lot of things right in this year's installment compared to last year’s, however, the game does still struggle with some mechanics. Passing is one of them; while I am on the pitch and I want to pass it to another player it will go to another teammate that I had no intention of passing it to. As well, during a penalty kick I could not switch my keeper to automatic control, which became very frustrating.
FIFA 17 delivers exactly what I needed and wanted in a soccer game, a lot of changes for the good, an all-new story driven mode showing the ups and downs of a professional athlete, Ultimate team mode where you can build your all-star team of current players and legends from Reus to Beckham, and play through the divisions. If you are football fan then FIFA 17 is the definitely the title you want to pick up.

I had the same conditions until PES 2012 was released. The first time that i played the game, i was realy surprised! Because i expect a better version of the game than last one, but it was strongly awful and i was disappointed of it.
Some days later a friend of mine, suggest me to test the FIFA 12 and when i wanted to start mocking it, he was not allowed me to speak and told me "FIFA has changed and it's not like the FIFA 06. please play the game without prejudice and then judge it...!"
And that was the beginning of my 5 years of playing FIFA without switching back to PES! Because i figured out that EA has changed the engine of FIFA and the game was awesome! And each year, the company was correct the bugs and problems and made a better and better version of it's video game.
And today -with Frost Bite engine at the head of affairs- EA company has made a nice and perfect game.
So i tell you this again: "If you are a fan of football, then you should give a chance to FIFA17!!!"

Gameplay though still needs plenty of work players sadly do not feel that different from each other weather you are Messi, Ronaldo, Kroos or Pogba. also quick pacey players who can leave a lot of defenders for dead feel a little slow they have however improved the tackling mechanic you can no longer just mash the O button and steal the ball easy you do have to work hard and time your tackles every time which is a big improvement.
Graphically it looks good wear on the pitch is a nice touch the new frostbite engine certainly does make this look like the beautiful game except during substitutions players look a little deformed when walking as well as a few animation issues.

Overall i would give this game a 7.8/10 so rounded up to an 8/10 not a pretty good football game but in need of a overhaul i fear the slump Fifa suffered in the early 2000's may rear its ugly head again.

This game features more realistic physics, which changes the way the plays in variety of ways, butthe physics simply don't apply to your CPU opponent. They buzz around without any sense of weight, fire off hyper-accurate passes and shots, and are completely unaffected by physical contact. The real problem is how they do all of things at the same time. Once, I was dribbling at full speed, and a defender turned around to challenge for the ball, the collision knocked my player back about three yards. The CPU player, who was not affected by the collision, collected the ball and passed it while I was in the stumbling animation. These types of things happens AL THE TIME. Not only does it make the game frustratingly difficult, it looks ridiculous. If this only happened on the highest difficulty, I wouldnt mind, but I'm only playing on Professional.

Graphically, the cutscenes look great, but the on field action is a step back. EA tryed to improve the lighting this year, but the result is the game actully looks more pixellated than last year.

Not a good game this year.

So what do EA do during the year they have to create their game? Yes, it seems that they have been able to upgrade their graphics to make the game look a little bit more bright and colourful, but honestly other than a few tweaks to gameplay to make it a more pacy experience, the game lacks any real innovation. I don't see how they can continue to push away from improving their game modes and adding beneficial new features. Why does customisation lack so much? Why can't we create our own teams in the game? Why not allow us to create a team that can be used in manager mode, or simply add the ability to customise kits and sponsors throughout the years in manager mode? These are only small details that could help the game out. The game could be expanded on so much more, yet the game is stuck in the past. If FIFA didn't have all the fluff of licenses and game modes and was judged strictly on gameplay it's an inferior game to PES this year (first time I've said that since the PS2 days.). Overall this release is very underwhelming. No real tweaks to the career mode and outside of the Journey there's nothing that really makes this release stand out. Expand

Masterpiece of a game. An unbelievably ambitious effort and EA has knocked it out of the park. Brand new game mode, brand new engine and huge improvements across all aspects in the game... well done!

If you've ever played The Order 1886 on the PlayStation 4, then the best analogy I can give to you is that FIFA 17 is The Order 1886 of sports games; all style, and very little substance.

The game definitely looks brilliant from afar, which will be most of your in-game experience, and the presentation overall is very neat, much like the sport's representation on premium television
If you've ever played The Order 1886 on the PlayStation 4, then the best analogy I can give to you is that FIFA 17 is The Order 1886 of sports games; all style, and very little substance.

The game definitely looks brilliant from afar, which will be most of your in-game experience, and the presentation overall is very neat, much like the sport's representation on premium television channels. In my opinion however, I think all of this is to the detriment of the game itself.

FIFA 17 spends more time wanting to 'look' like football and how its seen on Sky Sports, than how football should actually play as a sport. The obvious comparison to FIFA is PES, and this area is where PES ultimately wins between the two in this year's iterations. FIFA's gameplay on the field lacks any kind of purpose, its entirely unbalanced in terms of individual player attributes and how they translate on the pitch, and tactics also are poorly implemented in match play. Both these elements are in stark contrast to how PES performs in these areas.

Passing is sluggish and take an age to power up, goalfeel is non-existent, and AI defenses make space so easily - even on World Class and Legendary - that it's impossible not to score a goal against them; leaving the player ultimately unsatisfied even though it should be the opposite (i.e. goalfeel). Animations string well together, but they also take priority over user input and responsiveness, which ultimately results in a frustrating gameplay experience. PES' goalkeepers have been refined this year from a bad state into an excellent one, and now this highlights massive shortcomings in FIFA's goalkeepers, whose animations are limited, are slow to respond to medium-speed 30 yard strikes, and are often capable of making a hash of situations due to the games dodgy collision detection engine.

Game modes such as FUT and Online Seasons will always have the upper hand on PES (even with their equivalent modes) due to EA's deep pockets and human resources, and The Journey now makes full advantage of such resources. It's a nice addition to the game and very entertaining, but its not quite as significant as EA would like it to be, with a campaign only lasting one season and resulting in about 16 hours in total (across both the story and gameplay elements). That said, this is one game mode that FIFA can claim is an advantage over PES' offerings, and one that Konami will probably never have the confidence in replicating for its PES franchise due to the lack of potential economic returns.

FIFA's Career Mode is much the same as before, inspite of claims that EA have "vastly improved" it, which is old hat as far as many FIFA fans are concerned. Career Mode is still a good, well structured mode on the face of things. It could be argued however that PES's Master League has much more substance and depth behind it, especially considering it's transfer processes and team-based statistical analysis before and after matches.

Even with all of FIFA's depth in game modes, graphical fidelity, licenses, and presentation, FIFA still falls short where it truly matters in a sports game: the gameplay - the transfer of the sport itself to the game and how it plays. In this regards, FIFA is way off, and has quite a bit of catching up to do with it's opposition. FIFA demonstrated so much promise with the introduction of the Frostbite Engine, and aesthetically FIFA has vastly improved and is now outclassing PES, but the hope that the core game from FIFA 16 getting an overhaul with its addition will leave many people very disappointed.

The Journey has been the only real redeeming factor from FIFA 17, and even it can't really save FIFA from it's own poor core gameplay. What it does do, however, is stop me from giving the game a 5/10, and instead redeeming a respectable score of 6/10.

Not good enough for a AAA title of it's magnitude. If you're looking for a good football game this year, buy Pro Evolution Soccer 2017 (or FIFA 12, or PES 3-6)....

This game should be called HANDICAP 17.
Scripting/Handicap, goals at 45/90 min are still here.
You do not have control in this game.
When you win or lose it wasn't for your habilities or faults..

With much-needed tweaks in visuals and gameplay, some improvements in the career mode and the addition of the Journey Mode, FIFA 17 has retained its place as the best football simulator available on the market.

The story mode (this year’s biggest selling point) is not perfect, but I was surprised how much I was invested in this idealized adventure every little boy dreams of while playing football with his pals. None other mode in FIFA or PES provides such experience. In all other departments – licenses, visuals, sound, atmosphere – the new FIFA is as strong as ever. [12/2016, p.67]

The inclusion of a story mode represents a move into fresh ground for the FIFA series. [Dec 2016, p.66]
