Expand

If you play mostly online, you may get alot enjoyment out of fifa 17. I played a couple clubs drop in games and i liked it. The increased physicality means the little speedy guys no longer dominate, which is great.

This game features more realistic physics, which changes the way the plays in variety of ways, butthe physics simply don't apply to your CPU opponent. They buzz around without any sense of weight, fire off hyper-accurate passes and shots, and are completely unaffected by physical contact. The real problem is how they do all of things at the same time. Once, I was dribbling at full speed, and a defender turned around to challenge for the ball, the collision knocked my player back about three yards. The CPU player, who was not affected by the collision, collected the ball and passed it while I was in the stumbling animation. These types of things happens AL THE TIME. Not only does it make the game frustratingly difficult, it looks ridiculous. If this only happened on the highest difficulty, I wouldnt mind, but I'm only playing on Professional.

Graphically, the cutscenes look great, but the on field action is a step back. EA tryed to improve the lighting this year, but the result is the game actully looks more pixellated than last year.

Not a good game this year.

Really disappointing, i think even more so than last year, why a company as big as EA cannot put together a football game that at least close to the real life is beyond me, i understand it needs to be fun and appeal to children but surely thats why amateur is an option, if you were not happy with last years shambles this is much of the same.
Its not worth the ramble to list the problems.

The bad: The matchmaking in Ultimate Team (the most popular feature in the game) is horrible. Even if the connection indicator says that the connection is good and stable, it might just not be the case. I haven't gathered the data, but it feels like 60-70% of all the matches are laggy and/or there is a button delay. This is not acceptable from a competitive gaming perspective.

The player changing are just as horrible as the matchmaking. When defending a counter attack it's down to sheer luck if you get the right player.

I have to advice players to stay away from this game until it's patched up.

For gameplay, it's just the same thing over and over again. buggy AI and slow gameplay. EA should just take a few years out and really focus on FIFA because every year they might as well just add all of this for DLC.

First off, this game has loads of potential to be wonderful, and yet somehow EA have produced the single worst, most insufferable single player mode in FUT I've ever played. In truth, this isn't totally surprising since anyone who played FIFA 16 probably remembers the absurdity of playing on world class difficulty. Well this year, be prepared to face CPU opponents who play shockingly oppressive superhuman defenses: CPU players are always perfectly positioned; they don't fall for any skill move or trick; they can intercept every pass; they can block every shot; and CPU player is faster, stronger, has better reflexes, and so forth, than all of your players (even if you have top players and the CPU opponent is a fourth tier English side). But best of all, the CPU NEVER gets called for a foul. Defenders will steam roll your players, obstruct you up and down the pitch, slide in from everywhere, and they will not be called for a foul. I've played over 60 offline matches and been awarded two direct free kicks, and the CPU wasn't even called for a single foul during the last two offline seasons I completed (that's 20 matches). Meanwhile if you breathe on a CPU player the ref will blow the whistle. It's just absurd and reflective of totally unbalanced gameplay. It's unfortunate because the graphics are nice and other modes like pro clubs are good fun. But the offline gameplay in UT continues a pronounced downward trend this year. It's really almost like the developers have gone out of their way to strip most of the fun out of single player in UT. But, if your thing is 0-0 scores with maybe 1 or 2 shots on goal the entire match and the CPU getting a ton of ridiculous tackles and no fouls, then you'll probably love playing the CPU in FIFA 17 UT. It's possible they'll recalibrate the offline play after the first patch, but you just never know with EA. Expand

This year the game is very boring and frustrating. Gameplay is worse than Fifa 16, expecially in multy, where physical contrasts are more important than player skills, and there is the impression that we dont have a real control of the gameplay. Bah...

Defending : 4/10 You can win the ball through interceptions and occasional slide tackles, but thats it. Defenders are all over the place. Slide tackles dont work, and if they do, its most probably a foul and a booking. Only way to win a tackle is a standing tackle near the throw in line where it just goes out for a throw for the opponent. Overall, its just really bad.

Goalkeeping : 3/10 The AI keeper seems to always be on form, and always makes ridiculous save after save. Not realistic at all. Your keeper on the other hand, either plays really well, or is asleep. No in between. Its been this way for the past few games now.

Referees : 1/10 Worst referees ever in FIFA history. They foul and book perfect tackles and let the bad ones go. Always too quick to book players, never book them when they have to. Overall, they are horrendous.

My Career Mode - Manager : 6/10 Pretty much the same thing except with objectives added. Still no real financial control. Options as to what you can do are very limited, and it can get boring really quickly.

My Career Mode - Player : 4/10 Even less options than manager mode. Also, players always get subbed off regardless of position, stamina, form or performance in the match. Fans have been wanting that to change for years, EA still not bothered. Can never seem to stick to the mode for too long because of this.

My Journey : 6/10 One of the better things about the game. Only issue is how it tends to not make sense. You could be in great form, banging them in, have a better return than your rival, and STILL you will get sent on loan. And the loan period is pointless as it achieves literally nothing and just drags on with no story. More content and more things to do would be nice. Also, there needs to be an option to customise how you want your player to look like.

Overall, just two good things about this game, the attack and My Journey which was a good change from regular FIFA games. But everything else is either the same, or worst than last year. The scripting handicaps you, most goals come at 45th or the 90th minute mark. You could have 15 shots on target, wont matter cause more often than not, AI goalies are unbeatable and AI scores with their first shot after being dominated for 90% of the game. This is overall just the same game with a few add ons. Many bugs and glitches. Once again, this is classic EA, not bothering with what their customers say.

I didnt rate Ultimate Team cause I just dont bother with it.

Ive been a long time FIFA player since FIFA 98. And EA is clearly lazy with the game and puts in no effort in the offline mode anymore. Its catering to its Ultimate Team fan base, and have forgotten the people who got them where they are.

Inability to call second defender to tackle combined with the changes to shielding the ball, mean it's impossible to win possession off someone unless they make a poor pass.

Still the same feeling of RNG when it comes to shots, headers (particularly corners) and through balls.

Seems to be greater delay, also some of the new animations are horribly implemented, e.g. on crosses, a player without any time or space will stop go back 3 steps and try to take it as a spot kick.

Online is a mess. No ability to see ping of opponents or to filter opponents based on connection.

    4) Variety of goals you can score is good and the ball physics are pretty spot on.
    5) I enjoyed The Journey - I wish it was longer, maybe even over the course of a career. It feels too short but it was interesting, if they expand on it it could be the first sports game/RPG for some time.

    The con's:

    1) Strength is just overpowered - players are free to shoulder charge you off the ball with no punishment - this becomes a much bigger issue on higher difficulties and online
    2) Bad AI. In short EA is just too lazy to develop decent AI and, instead, just makes players perform way beyond there stats i.e. slow defenders catch up to 99 pace/speed players with ease.
    3) Offline mode. Clearly this has been abandoned for years now - same title screens, same formula. complete lack of depth in terms of developing youngsters and having an academy, an utterly useless addition of 'controlling your budget' which basically is the same choose ratio of wages & spends. All in all it feels exactly like '15 and '16 - not good enough,
    4) There are still issues over passing - the amount of times a pass will go to the exact player you do not want it to go to is ludicrous, it is so ham fisted and really detracts from the game.
    5) Career mode - same old problems - players randomly deciding they want to leave (usually your best players) - negotiations being very very basic (it doesnt have to be champ manager level but it could have a little more sophistication) - other teams just being terrible (2/3's of the way through a season and the 2nd place team has like 38 points its just stupid, make the good teams more competitive so I have so worry about actually losing a game. The list is endless for career mode honestly.

In short my gripe is that, for a 'new' game, I expect new additions and features. The only new addition that stands out is The Journey - everything else is just Fifa 15 & 16. The offline play has had literally zero attention paid to it and we all know why: FUT. I know this is popular, and I know EA make some serious money off of this, but it is not for everyone. The offline game should be the basis of the game not some after thought but, with Fifa, it is. For me I wish I would have got a refund when I had the chance and just kept playing Fifa 16, honestly the differences offline are so small it would make little to no difference. The game, in itself, if you ignore the previous titles, is probably a 6 or a 7 if your being very generous but it's the complete lack of progress in the series that really grates - Fifa focuses all its effort on FUT and the rest of the game suffers. They are milking the cash cow and it makes players, at least it makes me, feel ripped off. I really don't think I'll buy Fifa 18 unless large scale changes to offline mode are made - if they don't I can just keep play '17: if offline play is your thing I would choose another game as Fifa 17 just cannot cut it.

'The Journey' is stolen from the 2KSports NBA franchise, but executed much more poorly. My main complaints were that the gameplay in this mode is just awful, with the AI trying so hard to get you the ball all the time that almost every game ends up 0-0, and players miss open goals if you didn't provide the ball for them, but can score much harder goals if you do. If you're an experienced player you'll just be frustrated with how poor the AI is, and if you're a newbie you'll probably just be confused why it plays nothing like real football. I was also disappointed that 'The Journey' ends after only a season, with nothing to do other than pick up an FUT card for your player (useless for me as I don't play FUT).

The career mode is likewise disappointing. EA Sports tried to add some extra depth with seasonal career objectives, but these are (like the season goals from previous games) poorly aligned with your club's status or previous performance. Do well one season, and the next season (without your budget increasing) you'll be expected to win everything, oh and also stop your player wages increasing. The youth player goals (e.g. get 5 players to improve by 10 points in a year) are particularly frustrating - you spend the whole season training just those players to improve their stats, then next year those players get nothing while you do it all over again with new players. I felt like I spent too much of my time training players, scouting players and desperately trying to sell players and not enough time actually playing. Taking corners and free kicks (unless you're shooting) I find very confusing, there are so many controls that don't seem to do much.

On the positive side, I do like the preseason tournaments, and I have felt that the free kick taking is more balanced this year than any previous FIFA game I've played.

In terms of the gameplay in game, I've found the controls to be slightly sluggish, but also confusing in this game too. Previously controls were set up so something like a quick feint or turn was easy, but these are now much more difficult to pull off, as a result, embarassing dribbling errors happen all the time. My brother and I had a long discussion about how awful the penalties are: any penalty system where you can easily send the ball off at 90 degrees from the player is poorly designed. The whole idea of penalties is that they are scored more often than not.

I struggled to learn FIFA15, but it was fairly enjoyable once I mastered it. FIFA17 though, I played one season of 'The Journey' and one season in career mode, and I'm done. Perhaps FIFA will return to being a fun game eventually, but not this year.

This is not a good game and it's the first time I regret spending money on a game this much - and I got this for 20 bucks on the PSN sale. And yes, I have played most soccer games starting from freaking "Super Soccer" on the SNES, so yes, I do kinda know what I'm talking about when i talk about soccer games.

let me explain: The gameplay is terrible. This simply is not how soccer is
This is not a good game and it's the first time I regret spending money on a game this much - and I got this for 20 bucks on the PSN sale. And yes, I have played most soccer games starting from freaking "Super Soccer" on the SNES, so yes, I do kinda know what I'm talking about when i talk about soccer games.

    let me explain:

The gameplay is terrible. This simply is not how soccer is played. The passes are either way too slow or (if you press L2 to give it a drive) way too hard. For some reason, they also removed the ability to separate assistance on speed and direction. Total manual passing just doesn't work well, when the AI doesn't understand who you#re trying to pass it to in the first place.

Similar issue with shooting mechanics - the majority of shoots that you don't fill the power bar for 2 sec or so barely move 10 feet. This is not some figurative speech either. It literally doesn't move any more than this.

When you try to play physical defence, it simply doesn't work. The rag doll (the body of the player basically ) just lacks "body". It feels as if the opponent is just hitting a liquid and not a full grown man trying too push him off. This is clearly not done by physical engine, but rather a script, where an animation is player if the script says the duel is won physically - it's why you can lose the ball this way, but can't win it the same way if you try.

The Stamina bar depletes way too quickly. Two sprints with Aubameyang and he is basically done for three games. The man played some 40+ games last season, 90 mins each, and sprinted throughout every single game. This forces you to play at a minimal pace and just hold the ball forever and work your way through tediously or by abusing the trick stick, which btw, is needlessly complicated, where the most basic inputs don't even do anything, yet they skipped them and started the most basic moves with complicated inputs.

The new penalty and corner systems are also awful. You just can't drive or curve the balls and it's so needlessly "complicated" to make these very simple things happen.

I feel as if they tried for a full on soccer simulator or something, which went horribly wrong, but they also forgot that a game in real life goes for 90 mins while here, You need the same action to take place in 10 mins. I can't tell you why, but they decided to focus on the slow moving, barely action having part of the game, instead of opportunities, quick passes, counters - the "fun" stuff that gets you up your seat when watching.

I thought PES 17 did a bad job gameplay wise, but FIFA sadly isn't any better this year and you can't edit the sliders to fix some issues, like Stamina - cause they removed that option for no reason really.

So, is there anything good about the game? Yes! The career mode, both manager and player, are well done as always. Transfers are realistic, your tactics mostly work (within the confines of the not so great gameplay I just talked about) and the graphics are quite good for a soccer game. Load times and stuff like that is also quite good. I sadly can't talk about the online part of it all, but the FUT stuff costs a ton of money, which makes this totally unappealing to me anyway.

So, should you get it? No. If you have any previous game in the series, just stick with that. This is, imo, a lot worse than FIFA 15, which was the last FIFA I played, but it is still a better Soccer game overall than PES 17. It isn't worth 20 bucks though. it just isn't.

it's boring. The Journey made no difference quite frankly it worsened the game. I hope EA cancels this dying franchise soon. Nothing will make me play any other FiFA game again.

    Decepcion total.

copy paste since fifa 15, the graphics are the same and the players have a lot of errors (a lot of bugs). the story of the player is so bad, they need to put the player story of NBA2K if they want to get better

With much-needed tweaks in visuals and gameplay, some improvements in the career mode and the addition of the Journey Mode, FIFA 17 has retained its place as the best football simulator available on the market.

The story mode (this year’s biggest selling point) is not perfect, but I was surprised how much I was invested in this idealized adventure every little boy dreams of while playing football with his pals. None other mode in FIFA or PES provides such experience. In all other departments – licenses, visuals, sound, atmosphere – the new FIFA is as strong as ever. [12/2016, p.67]

The inclusion of a story mode represents a move into fresh ground for the FIFA series. [Dec 2016, p.66]
