Now for the game mechanics. Evolve has some of the best FPS mechanics out there at the moment, everything works great and helps with the immersion of the player.

if you enjoy a multiplayer FPS games then this if for you but if you prefer a game with a great story then i suggest you ignore this title.

Evolve is quite a unique experience. One that simply cannot be labeled purely as a shooter. That is only one element of the game, the other being the hunt. I quite enjoy fighting as both human/ monster as they are both equally fun. I think the part where it may be off putting, is when the monster is able to escape and you have to spend time trying to find him again. Some may argue thatEvolve is quite a unique experience. I think the part where it may be off putting, is when the monster is able to escape and you have to spend time trying to find him again. Some may argue that this is tedious and repetitious. But, once again , this is part of the game. The hunt. It does not bother me at all. As a matter of fact, I rather enjoy it. And i have also been in the role of the monster and the feeling of being hunted is a little thrilling to be honest. There were moments where I thought I was safe enough to feast or evolve only to realize that the hunting team were right on me .. and there have also been times where I have completely fooled them. Regardless, the battles are epic fun and brutal. The only real quip I have with this game is the DLC scheme is really bad. Really bad. And more importantly, there is a real lack of game modes . In short, this is a great, fun game IF you know what you are getting. If you are expecting a COD or Destiny even, type game... No. This is a unique game that offers up a lot of great ideas and for the most parts , succeeds. I feel that a sequel could definitely put some polish on a franchise I hope to see more of. Expand

Full disclosure: played the beta only, and did not really enjoy it enough to buy the full game. The reason behind this is the matchmaking, and the fact that the game was just boring. I am all about shooters like Left 4 Dead 2 (a game produced by Castle Rock) and Battlefield 4 but this one seemed to have missed the mark. Not really good for a game I was definitely looking for.

A new franchise into a genre that is frankly becoming a little stale. I have been gaming for a good 15 years, and to get to experience something fresh and masterful at what it is, is a real treat.

    -- GAMEPLAY--

4 vs 1. 4 human controlled classes with each class having three unlockable characters that all differ in playstyle dramatically. We have the standard 'assault', damage dealer with a personal shield. 'Medic', healer and integral to your groups survivorbility, a smart medic player is essential to a groups success. 'Support', beams a laser like shield on other team mates providing armour, or litters the battlefield with gun turrents that ravage the monster. Lastly the 'trapper', in my opinion the most important team member in the early stages when the player is able to smartly "dome" the monster and litter the ground with harpoons so the group can deal that all so important early damage.
    MONSTERS UNITE
We have three playable monsters at the outset, all differ in playstyles and all posses an arsenal that match the early overwhelming odds.
Goliath - Savage melee and a hefty armour pool give this guy and edge in the later game stages, but early on in the games progression he is extremley vunerable to damage
Kraken - More of a long range beast, who can also take to the skies and rain down electrified damage. A smart Kraken player is near impossible to stop in the later stages.
Wraith - The delicate deadly flower of the bunch. Armed with a low armour and health pool compared to her comrades, she is much more tempered to the more cunning of moster players. Fantastic melee options and abilities like abduction reward a clever player and provide some of the best thrills in gaming,

    Graphics and sound
CRISP - Everything graphically in the game is well thought out and detailed, from the lockers in your **** to the lilypads that float in water in the ridgelines. Characters burst on screen with pop that each individually belongs to them.
Sound design is essentially one of the games strongest elements. From the sounds of birds being disturbed, tree's cracking and getting knocked over, weapons firing, Monster evolving and letting out a guttural roar, everything is in place and expertley delivered.

    Replayability
AND NOTHING WAS THE SAME. This game is riddled so deeply with strategy that its a little confronting. What's your monster play at the begining of a match? Do you simply burst and try to get enough space in between the hunters and yourself leaving your tracks for all to see ? Do you feint going one direction whilst crawling back over your tracks and going the other.
Hunters are no exception either, does the group splinter off into two's to cover more ground, do i pick ceratin characters that have different skill sets to support the group? The monster has just turned stage 3, do we try to seek them out whilst they have no armour, or head to the power relay and prepare as best as possible, laying mines and placing turrets.

Thats the true beauty to Evolve, and the reason this game is already near and dear to my heart. Come into this game with an open mind for a different experience, and an understanding that it plays most differently to others and requires understanding and adaptability on the players behalf, and you will not regret it.

Sadly DLC is a necessary evil in the gaming industry but I feel game makers are starting to rush games and expect us to pay for what should have been included in the first place. That is a crooked way to do business. Imagine buying a car and then having to spend extra on an engine and wheels. For this reason, although I was an avid Left 4 Dead fan, I will pass on this. But of course the developer had to cut like 70% of the game and sell it as DLC, and Day 1 DLC at that, mind you. Because who would complain about being ripped off? Gamers are sheep, duh, and the developer's so smart. Of course they won't.

This game should backfire at them badly. Developers like these don't deserve a penny, don't even deserve to be around. Developers like these don't make games because they love doing it and expect to make something out of it, they do it just for making something out of it. Here you see a job being put to practice, not passion.

For the content you get, this game is not worth it. Basically a game that has as much content as a free to play game, which means that its not much and everything else is locked behind pay walls, but the game itself also costs a whopping 60$ to get into.

Move on, ignore this. You'll have no regrets.

Buying skins is ok and it doesn't affect the gameplay. The only thing that bothers me are the new monsters and hunters coming in the future and that you aren't able to unlock them unless you pay for them. Why isn't there some kind of ingame currency for buying them with "playtime"?

If I had to describe Evolve to anyone it would be that it is essentially a "Strategic Left 4 Dead"( which makes sense as the developers of both games are the same). All of your teammates must co-operate in order to capture the "Goliath". Seems simple enough, although gameplay sessions can be ruined with a lot of inexperienced or bad players trying to figure out the control schemes or just being a plain noob.. (Ex. Goliath is close by and the trapper doesn't throw down the grenade to trap the monster. This was a situation that happened countless times.)

If you plan on playing the campaign and expect a Christopher Nolan written campaign - here's a spoiler alert. The campaign totally sucks and is completely what you would expect from a Campaign comprised of 4 mercenaries trying to kill monsters.. (A for effort?) Sure. Turtle Rock definitely tried to make the campaign story epic and it shows through the cut scenes, the only problem is it's plain boring and trying too hard. The nice thing with Left 4 Dead was it was kind of set up as if they were Episodes where the story was only based on surviving. This was a cool premise and it didn't seem to try too hard nor raise any expectations. It could have been more wise of Turtle Rock studios to try toning down the campaign and even make the characters more memorable or humorous as the characters in Left 4 Dead.

To be completely honest if you need my advice. Avoid the campaign. It is worth a try although it seems all the experienced players have decided to stick with the Skirmish mode making having fun an actual possibility.

All in all, minus the bad technical issues - Evolve is a lot of fun. The different roles allow for variety in game play type and the weapons can be really awesome! Many rewards are to be found and help keep gamers coming back to earn great unlocks such as new characters and more. Playing as the monster is tons of fun, especially when choosing new upgrades for your Goliath and other monsters, and even being tedious with your opponents.

The maps are great and theirs a fair amount although their still needs to be a bit more variety in the locations of the maps. I found myself too many time in swamps and forests giving a very flushed feel to the overall experience..

Although most of this review sounds like a bash on the game, I really do like Evolve! Theirs just so much more that can be done to make this a better game.

Here's a list of all the improvements I think are necessary..

    - More online games modes ( Defend, death match, etc)
    - More maps with variety
    - More playable monsters (Minor enemies like Left 4 Dead.)
    - 8v8 multi-player

A lot of these ideas are reflected on the Defend game mode! ^

If I had to give Evolve a score out of 10 I would probably give it a 7.5. Their is still much that is needed to be fixed to make this a great online experience.

You will never forget playing this game. This is an experience you should not miss. There is no other game that conveys the atmosphere, excitement, and overall gaming experience of Evolve. Don't miss out just because of the weird negative hype - that has nothing to do with the actual game.

Pacing and the transitions from hunt to battle are phenomenal; I love the sense of tracking a giant monster through dark forests or snowy blizzards, intent on the chase but equally fearful that at any moment the beast will turn and ambush the Hunters. Urgency and suspense drive the early gameplay whether as the Hunters trying to track and cut off the monster before it can evolve and become even more dangerous, or as the Monster trying to race ahead, feed, double-back, hide, throw off pursuit knowing that a team of four is hunting you...until you are strong, and whirl, and descend on them like rage and storm.

And then suddenly it is a wild, brutal, and deeply tactical battle for both sides, comboing abilities, intrinsic teamwork abilities, utilizing map and environment advantage (the maps are wonderful and vertical and full of different moments and opportunities), and then perhaps the chase is on again, as either side attempts to flee and disengage and lick their wounds before picking their time and place once more. The transitions from hunt to battle to chase to final stand, however they play out, are always dynamic and interesting and wild fun.

Abilities differ enough between hunter characters to let you find the one that best fits your play style or team composition, while still all reinforcing the basic class role of that character on the team. Monsters fill the classic archetypes of melee, ranged, and stealth to let you pick your favorite brand of mayhem, and each is equally capable of fight or flight in unique ways.

The strategic depth increases the more you play, as you begin to consider better ways to utilize the maps, combo abilities, isolate hunters, or cut off the monster's retreat. Win or lose, every round is fun and exciting. Either team could win at any time.

There is offline solo play with competent bots, big points for that.
There is also a full color instruction manual in the box; this is how you know it was made with true gamer love.

DLC? Guess what? At launch, DLC literally does not exist. Lot of fuss about content that has yet to be made. You can preorder DLC if that's your thing, but stop worrying about whether or not you want DLC, you don't need it. Play the game. There are plenty of characters to choose from and plenty of game, and in the heat of battle and the thrill of the chase, all that matters is that you are either hunter or hunted...and in the end, everyone is both, and that's what makes it fantastic.

There is no other gaming experience like this. And you should absolutely experience it. Ignore the negatively; play the game because gaming is about new and fascinating games, not about whining about marketing. Evolve.

Personally I disagree with lots of the lower scoring opinions on here. If you want open world and side ops - play "Farcry 4" - if you want content play "The last of Us" - If you want more campaigns, play Destiny.

But as for pure multiplayer - Evolve is a unique co-op experience that does the job it was designed to do. Not over-complicated - Not trying to be something its not; and

But as for pure multiplayer - Evolve is a unique co-op experience that does the job it was designed to do. Not over-complicated - Not trying to be something its not; and stands alone on a shelf of PS4 games that all do similar things.

Evolve doesn't tolerate spamming buttons, it actually requires a team to use ALL their skills and abilities to take down a monster, and rewards players accordingly.

Love the haters on here complaining about DLC's that cost as much as a large coffee these days (Get a job) - Things cost money, get used to it - if you don't like it, don't buy it.

Evolve creators didn't hide what this game was - its been clear from the outset what type of game this would be - and for those like me whom in the early days of MMO lived in Warcraft Bg's and Arena's - Evolve is a welcome addition to further Co-op craziness.

Clearly teams are only as strong as the weakest link, and trappers whom don't have a clue tend to frustrate other players. If this happens more than twice in a row - I just have a break as the Monster (You don't need to rely on anyone here to punish other players) - Or - even a better suggestion - quit whinging and hone your skills as a trapper or medic and be that difference that your team requires for a result.

Often in Evolve the stars line up and team play becomes fluent and beautiful - its a fun game and well worth a buy - as long as you already have clear expectations of what the game is at the outset.

Find a character you love, but be familiar with all play styles (as you will be called on from time to time to play different roles)

If you're the type of person whom runs away (On an "I AM" quest) from a team mate whom is trapped in a flower do yourself and others a favour and uninstall the game.

Evolve, for Evolved players only - noobs and solo players need not apply.

Take a cool concept and completely murder it with a low amount of content and terrible business model, and you get Evolve. The only good aspects of the game is it's concept and atmosphere. It has a campaign that you can beat in under and hour (that still manages to be repetitive). The core gameplay is a game of hide and seek. The core gameplay is a game of hide and seek. This is a monster game with only 3 monsters, and double the content planned for overpriced DLC. You shouldn't charge $15 dollars a monster when the base game is already severely lacking in content. It is an extremly underhanded thing to do. The DLC isn't just skins for vanity, it is core parts of the gameplay that are missing from a $60 game. The game itself deserves a mere 4/10, however as a gamer, the studio and it's practices deserve a 0/10. Hopefully the negative backlash will show AAA companies what not to do. Expand

With the right people on your side, Evolve can be a surprising blast. However, get lumped with utter idiots, or the shoddy AI, and it quickly becomes very, very frustrating. [Issue#254, p.66]

At launch, it feels neutered, and far too inconsistent to establish a lasting dominance on the multiplayer scene. [Apr 2015, p.110]
