Evolve is a great game. The monster fells incredibly powerful if played correctly and the hunters fell like they all have there important role that if they fail to fulfill then they'll lose. Just beware of the keyboard warriors bellow about to complain that a game has dlc. It's a shame that 2k abandoned the game 9/10

Juego terrible. La apuesta de 2K Games tenía buena pinta en los eventos (E3) pero cuando salió al mercado se vió que el juego era aburrido, incompleto y mal desarrollado. En definitiva, un desastre...

Somewhat fun game when it lasted, failed to keep anyone interested in the long-term. Obscene al la carté DLC practices (aside from the death of the game) makes this is the worst thing I have ever purchased. Ever.

Should have been free to play.

Evolve sports a unique premise, but one that comes with certain limitations. As a multiplayer game, it succeeds at what it aims to achieve, but as a single player experience it leaves much to be desired.

By far and large, Evolve establishes a narrative concept that is ripe with potential. In the opening cutscene, we're treated to character interactions and banter that are exceptional in the quality of how they're written, establishing complex characters and relationships in its limited running time. At this point I was absolutely impressed with what the writing team had accomplished, and I would've loved to have seen more backstory and developments throughout a fairly lengthy story-based campaign. Unfortunately, however, Evolve is primarily a multiplayer experience and lacks a traditional story campaign, which is a huge missed opportunity in this regard.

Foregoing said story campaign, Evolve features some tutorial missions that provide a small glimpse of what its campaign could've looked like if the development team had committed the time and effort into it. I enjoyed these brief moments of promise and further lamented the decision not to flesh out Evolve's relatively impressive universe with a fully fleshed out narrative. The game also has an Evacuation mode that kind of tells a story based on your performance in missions, but it's basically just playing multiplayer modes with bots and a loose narrative context.

Evolve shows promise in its combat and gunplay - my favourite aspect being that all hunters have jetpacks which makes traversal SO much fun. Unfortunately, this is where the fun ended for me. Maps are vast and well designed in terms of environments and verticality, but are mostly populated with creatures that aren't much fun to fight. What further compounded this lack of enjoyment was that no matter how well I tracked or attempted to catch up to the monster, I just simply couldn't catch up in time before it reached it's maximum level. When I did find it, I got crushed every single time.

One thing I did look forward to with Evolve would be trying out all 12 of its different hunters, but 8 are gated by the game's progression system which is egregious in the extreme. To unlock the other 8 hunters, you must play multiple matches using the four different hunter archetypes (i.e. Assault, Medic, Support, and Trapper) and level up all of their 3 unique abilities (to maximum, presumably). Once you have done this, you unlock the next hunter tier in whichever class you've committed the most amount of time to and must repeat the process to unlock the last hunter in that class. In theory, this sounds achievable, but in reality its an exercise in futility. What undermines this system is that the amount of points you receive at the end of every match is far too little to make meaningful progress and the amount of points required to level up each skill is far too great. And considering that Evolve's gameplay loop isn't that fun to begin with, everything becomes a tedious waste of time.

If Evolve featured dedicated single player content, then it could've been a better overall experience and thus, a better game. Instead, it's sticks to multiplayer guns and ends up being a lesser experience with a lot of wasted potential.

Evolve is the evolution of Left for Dead. Ok, ok I just had to get that out of my system, but anyways hello my fellow video game monster B-rod is here again with another review. Evolve is the evolution of Left for Dead. Ok, ok I just had to get that out of my system, but anyways hello my fellow video game monster B-rod is here again with another review. Evolve another four player co-op game that only works if you and your team work together. I have some gripes with this game so let us get into it.

The story of Evolve is a simple one. This colony on some planet lets just call it Endor for **** and giggles. Endor has been infested with these monsters that can either shoot fire, turn invisible or have weird black magic powers, and they are just wrecking everything they see. You can either play as a monster and do objectives like destroy the powerline, kill the hunters, breed minions, or destroy a star ship. Playing as the monster is amazing but it takes so long to unlock the next kind of creature that it's not something I want to keep playing as. I much prefered playing as a hunter. Playing as the hunter is just fantastic. Anyways the story is only about an hour and a half long, which I think is **** I understand it will let me change the levels I play and it can have different outcomes. Even so that only adds up to maybe 4 hours of the same story with different outcome. There is one opening cutscene and one ending scene so if you were expecting to get to know the hunters, well prepare for the Left for Dead experience.

The graphics look great in this game. The maps which consist of desert, forest and swamps all seem very detailed and partly alive. The monster design looks like miniature Kaiju from Pacific Rim, nothing wrong with that but the default monster reminds me of that. The sound design is meh. There really is no score, and the dialog is mindless and repetitive. The level with all the extra background noise does help feel like the location is infested with creatures.

The gameplay is fun for the first four hours, but I don't expect anyone to love this game in the same way Left for Dead was. In Left for Dead the maps stayed the same, but shooting hundreds of zombies with friends was fun. Now hunting the monster is fun too but you repeat the same **** over and over and over. Trap, shoot, chase, trap, shoot, chase. This game is just no fun by yourself either. Your AI partners suck unless you are the monster then the hunters are fairly relentless on finding you. With other player that know what to do the person playing the monster tends to just get their ass kicked right out of the door. Of course the opposite effect when hunters haven't the slightest idea how to play as their class. The hunters consist of a medic, assault, trapper, and support. I do love how each class has to do their job for success. I personally loved playing as the trapper, and I would suggest to newcomers start with assault because their job is to just shoot the creature. The biggest problem with the online is finding a match I don't know if the servers were **** or if just no one was playing this game week one but I would sit for about five minutes just waiting for a match to start.

Overall the game is very similar to Turtle Rocks Left for Dead. With a few exceptions; every class plays very differently and teamwork is key. The monster player can take on all four players if they level up quickly. I didn't hate the game but these games aren't for gamers like me who enjoy single player experiences. I say if you liked Left for Dead and I mean played for hours upon hours of it or if you have a buddy who owns this game definitely give this a shot. For the rest of you maybe, maybe rent this to see if this is for you. I give this a 3/5. It didn't do anything horrific, I don't believe in a few months that this will have any sticking power. I leave with a question. Will Evolve be a beloved as Left for Dead?

If you like games where you can use tactics, have a fair balance between players and enjoy every second... don't play this game.

This game deserves the name Walking Simulator, considering this is how you will spent 90% of your time. You will be chasing after the monster player, which could go on for 20 minutes or even longer, at which point he/she will be level 3, and you will die

You will be chasing after the monster player, which could go on for 20 minutes or even longer, at which point he/she will be level 3, and you will die inevitably. The balance between monsters and hunters is way off, as some hunters are clearly defenceless in some cases. As the medic you'll be the most valuable player, but it won't mean anything is your teammates don't defend you.

This is the game that managed to promise and deliver emptiness like Destiny did. It has no single player, a tacky fake campaign and just 4 modes. Apart from Hunt, no one even plays the other ones.

The good points: Graphics are excellent, and bugs are very rare. Probably because the game is so empty of meaning.

And finally, the DLC is just pathetic. Trying cram in paid skins in a game you already paid 60 bucks for. Absolutely shameless.

This game was a massive disappointment, and just a lazy attempt at making a game in general. I felt cheated out of my money. I rate this game bad, it gets a 4/10.

First and foremost, the gunplay is really quite floaty, and lacking in visceral punch and feedback. This is an aspect taken for granted in many of the top shooters of the day, and it sticks out like a sore-thumb in Evolve. The Hunters are relatively well-designed, most with unique and interesting tools at their disposal. Unfortunately, the weak gunplay renders a lot of these cool ideas moot.

Graphically, the game is very drab. I'm cool with a dark atmospheres, but the environments of Evolve just feel dead, and lacking imagination. The game is far from smooth, performance-wise, and framerate can be an annoyance.

Nowadays, in 2017, it can be difficult to find online matches, making the purchase of the game at any price a very questionable decision. The highly-publicized DLC controversy certainly didn't help in this regard. Even so, Evolve is not as bad as many would have you believe. It's not a good game -- even less so now with annoyingly-long matchmaking times -- but neither is it a complete abomination. It's a game brimming with good ideas that just weren't executed upon. Overall, it really feels like the game was rushed out-the-door.

Had a sequel been greenlit, I'm fairly certain the developers would've delivered a game worthy of Evolve's launch-hype. Unfortunately, with the disaster that was the launch and reception of Evolve, we may never see the promising ideas of Evolve realize their potential.

The concept itself, a team of hunters with different abilities attempting to track down and kill a monster, is potentially a good one but in this case it simply doesn't work. After an overly protracted tutorial mission my brother and I joined up with a few other random players online and then spent the first few games running around in circles trying to keep up with the monster before eventually being killed by its final evolved form. Hoping it was just down to our lack of experience we pushed on but many missions later it was the same old story, basically run around in circles of 15 minutes until the monster is fully evolved and then stand there firing bullet after bullet hoping to kill it. Occasionally we'd win, but either way every mission just played out in almost identical fashion and within a few days we'd both lost interest.

Maybe if you could find a regular group of five people to play with you'd get more out of it but my experience with the game was a frustrating and short live one.

Director says its going to be free to play, franchise gets transferred to 2k. They claim there will be no DLC at release. Okay... $200 DLC at release

Bad broken poorly executed gameplay. Bugs, bugs, bugs. Invincible shields, spawning as a random critter incapable of attacking. I've fallen through the ground countless times.

Each update makes the game worse, as if they had a complete game that they took parts out, polished the rest, and with every piece they put back, new issues arise. I especially dislike how the framerate can sometimes drop to 1 for no reason... on a console. The acknowledged bug list went two months after release without being updated. This is the most critical time to let the community know you're working hard on bug squashing, instead the bug list went completely ignored... for two months. Please tell me how they're supposed to fix bugs if they're not even acknowledging them. It gets worse...

And you're like, well the game is only a year old, surely they're going to keep working on it... No. Just no, because Turtle Rock has already begun hiring for a new unannounced IP that will NOT have anything to do with Evolve. A year later and the developers have already abandoned this game.

I spent $85 on this game at release, $60 for the game and $25 for the season pass, not including tax. Three months later I traded it into Gamestop for $8. The cashier said, "I'm surprised you lasted this long".
I bought a box of cat litter and I watched my cat **** into it. This is Evolve.

But unfortunately, the problems outweigh the benefits. First off, the gameplay is repetitive as hell, you'll spend hours chasing after the Monster, only to be told that the Monster is all the way on the other side of the frikkin map, so you have to run all the way over there, then you finally find the Monster, and you and your team, unload lead into it, trying to whittle it's health down. Then, suddenly the Monster will run away, forcing you to do it all again!! Secondly, There is a S@# ton of DLC, and the worst part is, it's not even GOOD DLC!! At least Titanfall and Destiny offer us DLC that is worth the money, and adds to the experience, but not with Evolve. In Evolve, you pay 40$ for a gun that is colored blue!! WOW! Thirdly, there is no Campaign, no story, no explanation for what the hell's going on!! F@# this game, only buy this game if you are a HARDCORE Left 4 Dead fan, and even then, you'll still get bored and tired of it after 2 or 3 hours. To top it all off, the price point should be more closer to $15-$20 or maybe even reworked as a free to play. It's just not that varied and enough content to be worth it. Even though playing with friends is still a lot of fun, that's a lot of money to get everyone involved. And like I said, it's not enough to have 3/4 cause you're playing dice with the last player.

So lacklustre single player content, basic multiplayer, and unvaried gameplay results in a game that should've been a free to play title with incoming content. Kind of like a beta (think Natural Selection) game, IMO.

Yes - it doesn't have story line and all the modes basically come down to the "4 guys hunt a monster" theme, but that's what this game is about and it is fun. True, it may get a little repetitive at times, but I just don't see it as a game you will be playing ten hours a day (even though I could, given the right friends to play it with).

What do I love about it:
++ Finally this is a shooter where you don't have to shoot people, instead you have to cooperate with them. And it really is fun to actually put those coop mechanics into action. Also its not just shoot and kill, this is really about hide and seek, about cooperating and communicating. Something I have been missing in a lot of games so far.
++ The cooperation idea: I love how the group is supposed to work with its 4 classes. Once you figure out what everyone is supposed to do, it's cool. And the different characters you can pick from each class add a nice variety and feel to the game.
++ the characters are not just skins you wear as a player, they are nice characters with a personality and personal feel to them.
++ the graphics and environments are just great, I love the arenas and the creepy feeling they give me
++ the entire hunt and capture the monster gameplay is fun
++ playing as a monster is also an interesting feature

+++ The option to play with less than 5 players. Honestly I bought that game because my husband and I were looking for a coop game that we two could play alone with our two PS4s. Star Wars battlefront left us very disappointed as there was only one mode with 4 arenas that would allow that. With evolve I wasn't quite sure if this was gonna work. But the game easily stacks up the party (and the monster) with bots, so you can play all by yourself, the way YOU want to. This is what I love about games, if the devs allow the players to play how they want. Also the feature, that you can switch to another bot and take control over him may be a small one, but I find it awesome, playing with my husband, being able to switch between the classes how I see fit at each situation. Nicely done!

    - - + + The only thing I have mixed feelings about are the dlcs. On the one hand side I think its great if a game is that good, that the devs would keep working on it to add more variety to it. On the other hand it feels wrong to buy a game, then see all the possibilities there are, but being forced to spend more money in add ons than into the original game to get all the content.

Overall if you are looking for a coop game that is not just the classical shooter, but needs you to think a bit outside the box of a classical shooter - get it.

If you don't know what it is and are looking for yet another shooter that lets you kill beasts and stuff - you'll be disappointed - because this is a coop game by nature, where the fun of hide and seek and cooperation comes first

Granted, I really enjoyed my first 2 to 3 hours with evolve, but before long the game gets boring and repetitive. The first thing I noticed was the fact that all the games maps, save for one or two, look the same. Apparently, there are only jungles on the planet evolve is set on. The second problem is lack of game modes, there's the main mode hunt, and then literally nothing. Add both of those things together and you will begin to understand why evolve gets boring pretty fast. Evolve also suffers from balancing issues, namely the wraith being close to unstoppable. I will never understand why the devs decided to add a monster that can teleport and turn invisible, to a game that's maps mostly consist of dark jungles. My only two compliments to the game are that the sound design is great and the way you level up is kinda interesting. Outside of that, however, evolve is a pretty disappointing game given how good the concept is. Expand

This game is as mediocre/poor as most of the user review say. Looks good, but handles poorly and lacks content and replay value. The game mechanics seem old, outdated and sluggish.

Specially the monsters are disappointing in this game. Only 3 monsters to chose between from the start!

All you fell in this game is an annoying loading balance on every little things u do, beginning with the jet pack, have you been annoyed with Red Dead Redemption's horse game play ? Here it's worse, because u'll be blocked down cliffs more than once, for a long time. The trap system is a confession of an unfinished, undecided game play, seated between two chairs, it doesn't assume the promise of the big maps (already said: not enough interactions with it). To end it, the frame rate is too low, and the hit box is seriously too approximate. Expand

Playing as the monster is great fun too. The single player element is the same as multiplayer but with bots, playing maps with different objectives, not just hunting the monsters.
My only gripe is the dlc, too expensive for what it is. I feel skins should be unlockable during gameplay.
Overall I highly recommend evolve as it is something new, good fun with mates and matches can last longer than 3 mins

As a hunter you'll spend most of your time chasing headlong through the terrain after your monster tracking dogbot thing with no real idea where the 'giant' monster is aside from the briefest glimpses. GAMEPLAY-- I loved the gameplay and had fun for about the first 5 matched but realized that it was VERY repetitive and got bored. There is other wildlife in the game which makes the map feel alive and being a monster is more fun than being a hunter. There is alot of running and moving around to look for the monster and it gets boring after looking for 10 minutes because the monster wont attack and keeps running away. The developers also steal your money by makeing HALF of the game DLC that the players will have to pay for to get the full experiance. Evolve is basically $60 for half of the game
GRAPHICS-- The graphics are amazing and blew my mind away which is actually one of the only good things in the game. The lighting in the game is perfect which make hunters feel more vulnerable to sneak attacks when they are in dark areas.
In conclusion-- THis game is defenitily worth getting after $30 dollars. I recommend buying it after the price drops in 2 months are so. $40-$60 is not worth it right now. Since half the game is paid DLC, you should buy the game for HALF the price which should be $30.

I noticed a pattern in the reviews. To be honest they seem quite artificial (READ BOTS), either a ONE or ZERO denouncing the dlc content, which being skins was/is trivial. The other side of the spectrum is glowing well expressed reviews (INDUSTRY MOLES?). Both of which has contributed to me finding less value from MetaCritic, sadly, as I really like the format. Although I could do without the glowing 'pro' reviews who hail polished and re-hashed poop daily.

I do recommend trying this game, watch some streams, you may find it exciting to take control of a hulking monster and wreck tiny annoying humans or fighting back a giant Goliath.

Not a ten, because it is by no means a ten, and certainly not a zero like some of these people are giving it. Before I give my full review, let me tell you a little about myself, as some people are saying that only certain groups of people like or dislike this game. I am 18 years old, and have only been for a few months. I live on the east coast, in a middle class family. I usually purchase my own games. I am by no means a new gamer (as Borat has said that only teenagers new to video games would think this is a good game). Basically I'm your average gamer.

Onto the game. I will start off by saying that yes, it can get a little repetitive sometimes, but despite this issue, it's a great game to play with friends. I've found that no matter how repetitive it is, I don't want to put the controller down for a few hours after starting. The scenery is beautiful, colorful, and most of all, dangerous. Even the relatively harmless wildlife can do some damage to you, which means you have to have constant vigilance to make sure you aren't about to get mauled. You also have to watch your stop, as there are man eating plants that like to sit in the brush waiting for a lone hunter to take that deadly step.

Now the annoying part is really the monster. You can go an entire game without seeing the monster once (if it's a decent monster), and even when you do capture it in the mobile arena, they can still slip away around to avoid the hunters, and then escape once the arena goes down. I admit that a giant monster is supposed to be difficult to kill, but I can't help but feel that the monster has the advantage no matter what stage they are in. The real problem is the wraith, the third monster you unlock after you master the previous two. It makes almost no noise, it's fast as hell, and it can turn invisible and send a clone of itself after you while it escapes. I think I've beaten the wraith once in a hunt, and that was because it was an AI playing as it. Honestly for something so fast and small it takes too much damage to take the thing down, and it deals far too much damage for a monster of its size. These are literally my only problem with the game.

Evolve is more of a game to play with your friends, otherwise it WILL get tiring pretty quickly. The DLC is a bit of a bother, but I've never been one to really care about all of that. Overall, Evolve is fun, dynamic often enough, and quite challenging when you have an opponent that knows what he/she is doing.

I waited for this game over other FPS because it looked different. Yes you still have the typical 4 classes of killers (medic, assault, support, with trapper being a bit different).

Lots of maps with good variety, only 3 monsters initially and 12 hunters although next week 3 new hunters and a new monster are going to be released. Gameplay works best when a team of 4 hunters work to their character strengths and communicate.

Having played a lot of Evolve the experience is soured by players running off to do their own thing and getting killed or not contributing to the goals of the game. If you are thinking of getting this game try playing with a mic and joining one of the PS4 Evolve community groups to find other players looking to team up and use mics.

Monsters feel well balanced and you can kill a poor team of hunters at stage 1 (when the monster is smallest and weakest) yet can easily loose to a good team of hunters at stage 3 when your strongest and at your largest. Teamwork really is everything.

A month in and it does feel that the player base has dropped a bit but with new characters about to drop it will be important to the long term community support of this game as to how further DLC is delivered.

Issues include, character speech in cut scenes not loading in, server connection issues stopping you playing online (you can play offline against/with bots which can be a harder experience to win), games dropping, players dropping out moments before they are going to loose.

Overall though as this is now available for around £30 just 4 weeks after release this is well worth getting, just remember running around solo like you do in COD or battlefield games won't work here and communication and teamwork are essential, then you will 1) love it 2) progress quickly.

A must have for the next gen.

There are numerous people enjoying this game immensely and by consequence don't feel the need to take time out of their 'busy' lives to give a crappy review to something they haven't given a chance. The fact remains people are hating on this game cause they think they're entitled for some reason to more content than was initially delivered with the first purchase. Why they feel this way is beyond me. They're not entitled to anything, let alone this extra content. It annoys me to no end how people are complaining about not having access to paid dlc when they apparently don't like the game in the first place. To make matters worse, it wont affect your game play at all. You will still be able to play against new Hunters and Monsters, all of which will give no advantage just a different playing experience. These people need to go back to playing Call of Duty and stop ragging on a company that has delivered a quality product, one that I haven't enjoyed as much in years. It's an intelligent, tactical game and a far branch away from the mindless first person shooters that are released year after year. There are constant adjustments being made to balance game play and given the quality of the end product I am happy to pay extra for the new hunters. I even got the new monster free cause I pre-ordered the game. 2k and Turtle Rock have been more than generous and still we have beggars feeling they're entitled to more, purely because it exists. This has contributed to a culture where people aren't giving the game a chance at all because of all the people whining. It's a downright shame as I would have a lot more faith in the direction gaming was going in general if people veered away from the next shoddy shooter title that will be released and played something that requires a little more thought like this. I wont knock it down due to the lack of single player campaign or side missions which I desperately believe would have gave this game more life. Being multiplayer focused it is quite disappointing how much lack of content there is available. Hunt and Evacuation are the only game modes that are played due to the others being ridiculously favored towards either the monster or the hunter. While the overall gameplay is very fun, shooting a towering deadly monster or ripping apart the hunters using destructive abilities, the WAY Evolve is played is what makes this game repetitive. Once you have hunted one monster your pretty much in store for the exact same encounter every match. Being a hunter is fun too but either the match is going to end very fast because you caught the monster quick, or will be a long tedious chase towards the battle with a level 3 monster that kills the whole team with ease. These are the two ways the match can go in Evolve.

The progression system is also a bad note as it begs the use of selfish play in match just to progress you characters. There could have been a much better system in place. The final unlock within this system is the elite skins that are truly embarrassing to have even be worth all the time leveling up your favorite character. Most of the elite skins are not worth for all the hours spent leveling up your favorite characters.

While there is fun and intense battles to be had in Evolve there just way too few and far between to continue to play. I really feel the content is so repetitive and limited to warrant a buy. Personally with more friends the game could be even more fun but still not enough to last.

I do like the game just not enough here to recommend picking up at its current price even with the planned dlc coming out.

Even trying to connect to the multiplayer is beyond frustrating with players disconnecting when they don't get the role they want. But even so - why can there only be one of each character class (Assault, Support, Trapper, Medic) per team? I see absolutely no reason why players can't just choose their preferred class.
Also: Day 1 DLC? You have got to be joking.

Tl;dr - very good premise, very poor execution. Don't buy.

The game really is designed for multiplayer only, the solo mode will allow the game to be played even after the servers are inevitably shut down.

Games can be a little one-sided. There's a balancing system that gives a boost to the team who lost the previous round, but they also give on-map rewards for the team that won, which is conflicting.

The progression system rewards sub-optimal and selfish game-play as people aren't looking to help their team win as much as they are trying to unlock their next thing -- thus, don't expect a medic to heal you if they need to land a few more sniper shots to unlock the next medic, etc. The progression system gives you a goal and something to focus on and provides the necessary grind to keep playing the game, but it hurts the actual gameplay a little.

There's a bit of a learning curve, but in two or three matches, you should be pretty comfortable with what you need to do. In 4 or 5 matches, you may have seen most of what the game offers. There's no storyline or campaign mode, only the other hunters / monsters to unlock, so staying power may be a little short. Let's remember that Turtle Rock developed this game and they're a pretty small company with probably a fairly small budget. I think they did an admirable job, and I'm unashamed to give this game a solid 8.

The graphics and sound are good if not superb, and the games are short and thrilling / fun. The asymmetrical nature of the game makes perfect balance difficult, but I think both sides are fun and both sides can win. It's mostly a matter of whether or not the hunters can coordinate and communicate, and whether or not the monster knows [how] to avoid a stage 1 confrontation.

I'll probably get the DLC hunters, mostly to support the game. I definitely wish there was more meat, I think a bigger budget would've produced a must-buy game. I expect to see clones from the big studios.

Evolve is excellent in what it has to offer. The amount it has to offer is where this game suffers. Charging full price for a game like this is harsh, seeing the base game is very thin. Evolve is a 4v1 multiplayer game that absolutely shines while playing with friends, but can be a bit lackluster playing alone.

The main game type of Evolve is Hunt, where the 4 hunters hunt a particular monster. This game mode is very solid, and can provide hours of fun for a group of friends, but when you are playing alone, it can get extremely difficult. The AI in the game is very skilled, and when going up against an AI monster, you find yourself getting lost repeatedly, until it is too late (there is an option to chose who the matches favor between monster and hunter though) .

The monsters in the game are great, and each have their individual strengths and weaknesses. The starting monster called the Goliath, is a powerhouse but isn't a strong evader, making it easy to kill if you can trap it right. You will mostly encounter this in the beginning before moving onto the Kraken, than the Wraith (which is not someone you want to mess with).
The hunters come in 4 classes, medic, assault, trapper, support. Each class has 3 different characters with different abilities. I found myself really enjoying Cabot of the support class, while also enjoying the assault class. Evolve makes good use of its classes, separating each class from each other with different abilities and weapons. Instead of only sticking to one class, I found myself trying to unlock each character in every class with still being entertained by each ability of each character.

With that being said, there isn't much more to the game AT THE MOMENT. I know expansion packs are already in the works, and you can expect a lot more content IN THE FUTURE. Right now though, the game isn't much sadly. With a 1 hour campaign, and only a handful of game modes (where hunt is the dominant mode), this game doesn't really have much to offer.
I found myself comparing this game to Destiny with the content of the base game. With not much to do on disc, and PAID DLC and expansions, it really isn't a game worth the $90 (AUD) price.

Although Evolve does the game modes so well, with interesting characters and great monsters, there just isn't enough content to justify the price of the game. The hunt mode can leave you feeling pleasant after a win or loss, but the game can leave you wanting more content without the wait and cost of upcoming DLC.

This game was obviously designed with the mindset that it should only be played with a small group of your closest friends. The problem with this approach is that it makes online matchmaking like Russian Roulette.
If the team of Hunters has one newbie, and you're facing even a half-competent Goliath, you are going to get ruined. If the Goliath player is new, and the Hunters are even just run-of-the-mill FPS gamers, the Goliath has no chance...and don't even get me started on players who have unlocked the Wraith.
I still have no idea how that thing got out of QA.
Balance issues abound in this game. I'm not even docking the score for the DLC/microtransaction nonsense that most people are up-in-arms about.
The game itself, and its wildly unbalanced approach, are enough.
The game is beautiful, and the worlds are filled with life beyond just the combatants...sometimes, a bit too rich. This is one of the biggest drawbacks. Another example of a prime concept that the developers couldn't take to the house.
I grant that it may be far more enjoyable for a group of hardcore FPS buddies who can all sit down and commit the majority of their gaming time to it...however, for the rest of the gaming community, this is definitely a title you can miss out on.

These levels become excruciatingly more difficult if someone decides not to choose Maggie and IMO the only true thing able to track the monster, Daisy the most useful NPC. Towards the end, I just dumped games if they chose any other Trapper character. Maybe other people enjoy these levels, but I stopped enjoying hide and go seek when I was 8. I think one way to resolve the Hunt levels would be to make much smaller maps or to give every Trapper a tracking pet. Hunt levels are such a major component to the games that I think fixing these maps could go a long way in fixing the game.
My only other issue would be a ranked system or like ability component. For instance, if you play with one unskilled Trapper or Medic, you are screwed, Game Over, hit reset. On that same note, a horrible Monster makes for a boring, easy game. There really isn't a way to determine skill level before fully entering a game.
I don't think this game is deserving of less than a 4, but I think the hype and hopes people had crushed the reality, but I do think it has potential for growth.

Evolve: Adapt or Die … and die, and die a bunch more times. And then probably die again.

I’m going to frame this by admitting that I’m bad at video games. I’m particularly bad at first person shooters. Now take all that badness and “evolve” that three times and you’ll understand how bad I am at FPS, competitive-online games. The only reason I picked up Evolve was because I’ve got exactly 4 other PS4 friends who are always down for trying online games.

Unfortunately, Evolve is so immediately difficult and cryptic that it turned off half of my playgroup, and left me playing lots of solo and multiplayer with random, headset-less clowns named “HedSHOTZZ_00”, thus further distancing me from “the way the game is supposed to be played.”

Here’s what makes this game such a tough game to enjoy right off the shelf:
    1. The tutorial teaches you basic button usage for two characters: one monster, and one of the 12 hunters. There is no campaign or advanced tutorials that ease you into the right way to play these characters.
    2. The HUD is immediately filled with tons of information, but no context as to what it means.
    a. What’s that icon over the hunting dog-lizard’s head? A claw? A question mark?
    b. Why did a Jurassic Park icon appear in the top right corner with a steadily decreasing gauge?
    c. I accidentally found the map (that the game never tells you about) by pressing the touchpad, but now there’s even MORE symbols all over the place
    3. Since you’re going to suck at hunting the monster at first, expect to spend about 10 minutes just wandering around getting lost in maps you don’t know, and not really shooting anything
    4. Since you’re going to suck at being the monster, expect to get trapped in a force-field they never tell you about and get picked apart and not understand why
    5. Your hunter abilities show up on the screen in the d-pad configuration of up-down-left-right; but joke’s on you, they’re actually mapped to L1, R1, Circle, and Triangle of course!
So if you like buying a game, and then immediately losing and dying for about 2 or 3 hours, then this game is for you!

But as an old person, with limited amount of time due to husbandly duties (and not the fun kind), I want to immediately have fun and feel like a badass when I’m playing games. Stealth kills in Shadow of Mordor make you feel brutally powerful, even in the early stages. Being a giant monster in Evolve, however, feels like I’m a handicapped, confused oaf. Even with a direct hit from a giant lava-rock, all I see is an indeterminate health bar shrink somewhat. And that’s best-case scenario – if they activated their shield, or the Support guy used HIS shield on your target, or the medic immediately healed their wounds, you feel like a helpless ape who just wasted his time.

When you get bored of dying as the monster, you can switch over to the Hunters and have a completely new and confusing control schema to get used to and get ready to die some more! Monster skills are absolutely not transferrable to the Hunters, so specializing with the monster simply makes you a clumsier Hunter at first.

This clumsiness is amplified in most online games, as the matchmaking system often plugs you into an already in-flight game, with a character you might not even be familiar with (and might even be incapacitated). Meanwhile your teammates most likely won’t be communicating with you, and you’ll often be fighting against a monster-player who is amazing and will decimate your disorganized team, or a total rookie who gets destroyed in minutes.

With all that said, I actually did start to enjoy the game after discovering that Defend was the right place to start leveling up guys and trying out abilities consistently. The 15 characters play very differently and after 10+ hours of unlocking guys through a system that’s not immediately clear or explained, the tactical depth and teamwork opportunities are quite good. The maps are beautiful, but also visually similar and very easy to get lost in.

This is a shame, really, because the game could be easily be more amazing with some basic tenants of modern gaming. Where are my sweet “finishers” for each character class? Give the monster a series of button-smashes that let me eviscerate a downed hunter. Let Hyde’s flamethrower start the forest on fire, and “smoke out” the monster. How about a few of the classic oil barrels laying around so there’s something in the environment that can add damage rather than the hit-or-miss elite wildlife?

In a nutshell its DO EXACTLY WHAT YOUR CHARACTER IS MADE TO DO. Nothing more; dont play Medic then lead the team and try to do damage. Dont be the trapper and stay in the back of the group. Find a few good-players and play the game on custom. Talk with your team mates during the game. Coordinate your search and never get to far away from the group. The options allows all types of advantages and disadvantages if you need help. Play Solo to improve yor skills and level up. It ALL counts toward improving you levels; online, off-line, solo and multiplayer. You can also play the EVOLVE HUNTERS QUEST (EHQ) iOS and Android game, earn Mastery points which can be used to level-up your Hunters. For each Mastery Star a Hunter has you can complete half the required work with the EHQ game. Thats a lot of help. When you play a multiplayer skirmish you may lose because of other players skill or willingness to be part of the team but when you have good players and coordinate your play the game is fun as hell. If your a team player (as i really enjoy) this is a great game. If you're the type of player who wants to dominate and stand out above your fellow players; rule the roost like a COD dude can, this may not be you cup-of-tea. Expand

And i can only say this because ive seen other friends play and stream it. So i already knew what i was buying but i figured i would give it a try to get away from the failure known as Destiny. Fun, enjoyable game in small amounts but quickly becomes repetitive. Would be better if the game had a campaign. Still, I truly enjoyed this game when I played it.

The Brute menacing monster's in Evolve play well and can be genuinely terrifying when your on the other side and they are hunting you vice versa, but unfortunately this experience was ruined, this game has some serious bugs at one point I was with my team gaming and speaking with them next thing they all froze, uneven match up's is another mishap I found myself being the support class most of the time even though I set the game to choose random. Evolve also consists of bland maps with no atmosphere it would have been interesting if they added other NPC's or even changed the environments depending on the destruction of the monster allies and creatures, instead what ended up happening was everything just felt placed as if I were on Earth or Mars fighting against the Fallen in Destiny.

There's also not much lore or background to the monsters, other creatures or even the colony that supposedly died from the unknown monster attack, I didn't feel like I was somewhere were there had been a lot of history formed before the destruction of the monsters instead what I got was just a small voice-over introduction and repetitive menu-screen cut-scenes. Evolve is a game with repetitive gameplay (which I enjoy playing if done right examples League of Legends, Destiny, FFXIV) but if a game is to base it's center point on repetitive gameplay it must be fun and most definitely not have the player being bored after the four hour mark. I've played free to play games with more content and gameplay hours than Evolve.

Final Verdict Evolve should be a free to play game there ain't enough content for it to be a feasible AAA game and the content that is available is micro-transactions not to mention the bland maps and little history and background to basically everything.

It's fun for a little while, but it gets old way to fast. They just didn't give you enough content to make it worth getting. I was hopeful, as a big fan of Left 4 Dead, that it would be awesome. That's a very short period of time nowadays for a multi-player game. Some reviews complained about the grind to open all the monsters and characters at the start, but that was actually the fun part. That's what kept me playing, hoping to find out that the next character was awesome. But, once I'd opened them and knew which monster I enjoyed the most, and which hunters I liked the best, the game got boring fast. I thought it would have longer legs because it is very different playing as a monster than it is playing as a hunter, and each monster and each hunter take different strategy. But the biggest problems are that the maps don't deliver varied enough experiences and the extra game modes aren't that great. Also, compared to Left 4 Dead, which I've sunk unlimited hours into and is still a blast to play today, the 4 v. 1 format doesn't lead to good rivalries, because your teams aren't flipping sides and changing roles. All in all, to keep it interesting, it needs more game types, more varied maps, more monsters, and more hunters. But they are going to charge $15 for each new monster and $25 for the package of 4 new hunters. That just seems crazy too me. If you really want to try the game, I recommend waiting a year or so till you can buy the Game of the Year edition(if it even gets one) that has much more content on it and sells for a discounted price. Then it might be worth it. Expand

Let's start with few things this game gets right; Playing as the both hunters and the monster is really fun, The maps are greatly designed, and the whole gameplay takes a refreshing new breath from the military fps genre.

Now for the bad part; People only seem to be interested in paling the hunt game mode when there are other modes to choose. Each hunters have cliche look and cliche personality (loud, obnoxious, joker, etc). Even though I said the gameplay is refreshing, it gets old very quick. And of course, we have the dlc **** Oh man, is it a terrible feature. First off, the whole different dlc bundles thing was a **** marketing for the profit. Second, this means Evolve is now a pay-to-win. Third, $2 for and **** blue skin? Are they mad?

Conclusion; It has met same fate as Destiny and Warframe. Little to no content unless you pay. Now excuse me, I need to go to trade this piece of crap in to pre-order Batman:AK

    - IT DOSEN'T GET OLD! I play it for 20 hours now. And i don't played with all characters yet. Because i want to master every class and character. I think every pick is worth at least 20 hours to play with, to know which is the best way to win the match.

    - Every match is different! For example, playing as a monster, you are constantly under pressure. Sometimes they find you in seconds, sometimes you can escape fast, somtimes you have to hide or be aggressive and so on. Do you kill the Medic first or do you kill the Trapper to escape from the dome? Do you kill the hunters or do you destroy the relais?

    - You have much Value. Other games like the Order have 6 hours of gameplay for 60 Bucks. This Game has no real campaign. Thats right and I love campaigns but this game was never meant to be a singleplayer game. What about Titanfall, or Plants vs Zombies GW. But thats okay. They are perfect for what they where build. And when you know this and you like to play a really deep multiplayergame, than youre right on this one.

    - YOU DONT HAVE TO PAY FOR DLCs TO PLAY THIS GAME! I preordered it and pay 47€ for the Copy and the DLC Monster plus Skins. I don't know what people talk about the price. Do you ever think about how much you pay when you buy all the elder scrolls DLCs, or Gears of War or Call of Duty and so on? You don't have to pay them. The most DLCs are cosmetic. You can also play with people who pay for the extra Monster. This is a problem in other Shooters, but not in Evolve!

I really wish they make an another evolve in 2 years!

A blast to play and very well thought-out in the balance department. There are some connectivity issues and some technical glitches, but over-all a very strong game. Is day-one DLC a no-no? Sure. But it is all cosmetic junk. Seriously, if you're getting upset about that then you just wanted something to complain about. Are additional characters and monsters going to be pricey? Yes. But some key things to note are that maps will be free, and characters are what make the game! Play it or don't, it is gong to be a game with a strong, hard-core community after all the people who have issues with it go somewhere else.

I encourage a buy for players who enjoy some strategy and thought in their shooters and can avoid repetitive game-play by changing things up. BE FLEXIBLE, enjoy all the different characters and monsters. Rent if you play a lot of 1st person shooters and aren't sure. Avoid trying if you need a strong story and varying environments. This game is strictly focused around the playable characters, their synergy, their tactics, and the monster's ability to adapt and succeed.
