I had high hopes for this game when it was announced but mixed to poor reviews put me off purchasing it on release. Seeing it going cheap a few months back my brother and I decided to give it a try, unfortunately it turned out that those less than stellar reviews where right.

The concept itself, a team of hunters with different abilities attempting to track down and kill a monster, is potentially a good one but in this case it simply doesn't work. After an overly protracted tutorial mission my brother and I joined up with a few other random players online and then spent the first few games running around in circles trying to keep up with the monster before eventually being killed by its final evolved form. Hoping it was just down to our lack of experience we pushed on but many missions later it was the same old story, basically run around in circles of 15 minutes until the monster is fully evolved and then stand there firing bullet after bullet hoping to kill it. Occasionally we'd win, but either way every mission just played out in almost identical fashion and within a few days we'd both lost interest.

Maybe if you could find a regular group of five people to play with you'd get more out of it but my experience with the game was a frustrating and short live one.

The characters have little or no personality and say pretty much the same thing every opening.

Only thing has going for it is the graphics.
it's a pretty game, and in the matches that don't end in 5 minutes you'll spend a good chunk of time running back and forth in these beautiful environments. The game is pretty much a running simulator with occasional monster fights.

worried about not getting the fully 60$ experience? well worry no more because you can PAY to fill in the gaps with the tons and tons of dlc that evolve was"built from the ground up" to support. Like different colors for your guns only 2$ each!

This is a wait for a 30$ game of the year edition type game because right now, it's definitely not worth the Triple A game price.

It's fun for a little while, but it gets old way to fast. They just didn't give you enough content to make it worth getting. I was hopeful, as a big fan of Left 4 Dead, that it would be awesome. I was hopeful, as a big fan of Left 4 Dead, that it would be awesome. But I've played it for about 23 hours now, and while there was a lot of fun in the first 20 hours, it's already gotten old. That's a very short period of time nowadays for a multi-player game. Some reviews complained about the grind to open all the monsters and characters at the start, but that was actually the fun part. That's what kept me playing, hoping to find out that the next character was awesome. But, once I'd opened them and knew which monster I enjoyed the most, and which hunters I liked the best, the game got boring fast. I thought it would have longer legs because it is very different playing as a monster than it is playing as a hunter, and each monster and each hunter take different strategy. But the biggest problems are that the maps don't deliver varied enough experiences and the extra game modes aren't that great. Also, compared to Left 4 Dead, which I've sunk unlimited hours into and is still a blast to play today, the 4 v. 1 format doesn't lead to good rivalries, because your teams aren't flipping sides and changing roles. All in all, to keep it interesting, it needs more game types, more varied maps, more monsters, and more hunters. But they are going to charge $15 for each new monster and $25 for the package of 4 new hunters. That just seems crazy too me. If you really want to try the game, I recommend waiting a year or so till you can buy the Game of the Year edition(if it even gets one) that has much more content on it and sells for a discounted price. Then it might be worth it. Expand

I like the idea of the game and the focus on team play but to be honest there is so much wrong with the game. The imconsistencies in match durations. I get games that last 3 min because the guy who plays the monster has no clue what he is doing. On the other hand sometimes we can't find the monster for 10 min the game is boring. Then if the monster is maxed out about 70-80% of the time we lose. It's just very hard to win at that point. The game needs more modes and more things to do not just hunting the monster. It needs some objectives like L4D. And then the DLC. There are two season passes one for monsters one for hunters. Seriously guys you want to milk us the gamers that much. The game was 40£ to start with. Then the both season passes 45£.
The joke about DLC: The Video Game is true to some extent. Is the game any fun? Sometimes yes but more often it's frustrating, boring and dull.
Not worth the full price at the time. Wait for a sale or maybe find a cheap used copy.
Four out of ten. Another triple A title that was a great idea but the finished product is crap.

I was pretty much expecting Left 4 Dead and while its there, it lacks something major.

Proper match making.and control of match making.

This is what really kills the whole game for me.

I've played this game for about three days now for online and have only played as the monster twice, and the Assault Class about 5 times. Three days...that's a lot of game time. What was the point of asking me to pick the top classes I would like to play as, when I can barely have the chance to play as the top two? Let us set up our own lobbies and be able to pick our own class or join a random in progress game as said class. I have zero desire to be a trapper or Medic. ZERO DESIRE. I HATE those the classes This is seriously the only problem I have with this game. The lack of actual control of creating and setting up matches. Everything is....random.. I LOVE this game and enjoy it greatly...but my god.

LET US SET UP OUR OWN GAMES AND PICK OUR OWN CLASSES LIKE ] L4D

now the DLC everyone is complaining about...Its simple. Dont buy it. Vote with your wallets. Right now its useless skins that serve no purpose nor give you an advantage

Now $15 for ONE Monster? That is steep. Steep enough to the point that I will not waste $15 on one monster. or $7.00 on ONE hunter. I will simply not buy this DLC, like I do with 98% of games. I seriously believe the last form of DLC I brought was for Fallout 3 and that's because it was actually worth it.

All the skins in that store though should be unlockable by winning a certain amount of matches. They are skins. Just re-textures or recolors of current outfits. Not worth the $2.99 I personally feel. If IO HAD to pay for this stuff, at the most I would only pay $00.99. These skins do nothing for the game play, nor do they change the actual game flow. The Season Pass is obviously a rip off conceived by both Gamestop and 2K. The Season Pass for $24.99 only gives you three new hunters and skins for three monsters. Thats it. It doesn't cover future content. Hence the name "Hunting Pass" but notice how We over at Gamestop sells it as a "Season Pass"? yeah. Be smarter people. I never push DLC onto people unless my manager is there and thats because I have to or I'll get fired.

Very good core design, and potential playability, all wasted with cut content and that "let's grab the players cash with terribly expensive DLC" attitude.

If that was free-to-play game It would have been a hit. But no, you have to spend lot of money to buy the base and then spend even more money to get nicer stuff. It's very obvious effort to capitalize on players as much as possible,

It's very obvious effort to capitalize on players as much as possible, because the game right now is dull and repetitive. The monsters look cool, the hunters too, but games tend to get tedious, it's difficult to find players to play with other modes that hunt, the battles quickly become repetitive because there's not enough content - it's like half od the game or more is being held to be released as DLC. Shameful way to milk the players without offering enough in exchange for such steep price.

You just tried tp sell us a car, 2K Games. It doesn't have the windows, upper body or seats. but hey, it has the engine and can drive if you just duck there, see? But if we pay you more money, you shall provide us with the remaining parts. Not cool, guys, not cool.

Long story short - don't buy this game. Don't feed the corporate greed. Don't let them win.

The concept itself is purely brilliant. Hunters hunting a otherworldly creature determined to evolve to a stronger being and survive. Sadly the gameplay falls short. The average match as a monster involves about 10-15 minutes of simply eating animals and nothing else, you're far too weak in the early forms to fight the hunters to you need to run until you reach your 3rd form. At this point the hunters don't have much else to do but chase after you and the flocks of birds you scare along the way. Then once the monster is at his strongest he can seek out the hunters or destroy a uninteresting large machine called a power relay.

Seeing as the game in general has such an egregious lack of content, what little it does have forces the player to play to unlock just about everything. It's somewhat insulting that the game was released with over 80$ of DLC. Most of which is $6 for just 3 skins... Who really gives a flying pigs ass cheeks about skins? I was also extremely dissatisfied to learn that the game only included 3 monsters in total, the rest would be released in future DLC. seeing as you're entire gameplay is dependent on the appeal of the characters gameplay, more than 3 beasts should be available. Thusly due to the lack of content, Evolve becomes old very quickly, After about 3 days of hoping it would get better, I quickly switched back to Dark Souls 2, and will quietly await Bloodborne.

On a side note, my last comment is about something I don't see many people bring up. I may be mistaken but are there people suppose to be on an alien planet? Because the few maps that this game does offer, are all set in an almost identical looking forrest, not unlike any average forest I've seen on earth, short of a few strange looking rocks. The concept artists really needed to get more creative with the environment....

This game was obviously designed with the mindset that it should only be played with a small group of your closest friends. The problem with this approach is that it makes online matchmaking like Russian Roulette.
If the team of Hunters has one newbie, and you're facing even a half-competent Goliath, you are going to get ruined. If the Goliath player is new, and the Hunters are even just run-of-the-mill FPS gamers, the Goliath has no chance...and don't even get me started on players who have unlocked the Wraith.
I still have no idea how that thing got out of QA.
Balance issues abound in this game. I'm not even docking the score for the DLC/microtransaction nonsense that most people are up-in-arms about.
The game itself, and its wildly unbalanced approach, are enough.
The game is beautiful, and the worlds are filled with life beyond just the combatants...sometimes, a bit too rich. This is one of the biggest drawbacks. Another example of a prime concept that the developers couldn't take to the house.
I grant that it may be far more enjoyable for a group of hardcore FPS buddies who can all sit down and commit the majority of their gaming time to it...however, for the rest of the gaming community, this is definitely a title you can miss out on.

You will be chasing after the monster player, which could go on for 20 minutes or even longer, at which point he/she will be level 3, and you will die inevitably. The balance between monsters and hunters is way off, as some hunters are clearly defenceless in some cases. As the medic you'll be the most valuable player, but it won't mean anything is your teammates don't defend you.

This is the game that managed to promise and deliver emptiness like Destiny did. It has no single player, a tacky fake campaign and just 4 modes. Apart from Hunt, no one even plays the other ones.

The good points: Graphics are excellent, and bugs are very rare. Probably because the game is so empty of meaning.

And finally, the DLC is just pathetic. Trying cram in paid skins in a game you already paid 60 bucks for. Absolutely shameless.

This game was a massive disappointment, and just a lazy attempt at making a game in general. I felt cheated out of my money. I rate this game bad, it gets a 4/10.

Repetitive game-play with the good old cat and mouse except I just found myself extremely bored after only a few games, the "early access" in form of the Alpha really turned me off in so many ways.

The last nail in the coffin was the reveal of DLCs and pre-order things for the game, you essentially don't have to play it to unlock stuff, yay for effort!

Ridiculously overrated and overpriced game that only has received massive hype because of the immense exposure it has had being played by many famous internet personalities. It is a shame that a concept with so much potential is being shoved out the door so quickly for the sake of profit, which has in turn halted it where it matters most. Never have I seen a game charge so much money for so little content, in fact, the amount of content is so little, that it will take you a blink of an eye to finish the single player campaign, which really isnt a campaign at all to begin with, but merely a tutorial at best. And the microtransactions, the f****ing microtransactions... GG Expand

What are these critics smoking giving this game a score over 5?
This game is fun for about 10 minutes. After that you've seen everything this game has to offer.
Save your $60 eventually a game that matches the marketing hype surrounding it will appear.

Let's start with few things this game gets right; Playing as the both hunters and the monster is really fun, The maps are greatly designed, and the whole gameplay takes a refreshing new breath from the military fps genre.

Now for the bad part; People only seem to be interested in paling the hunt game mode when there are other modes to choose. Each hunters have cliche look and cliche personality (loud, obnoxious, joker, etc). Even though I said the gameplay is refreshing, it gets old very quick. And of course, we have the dlc **** Oh man, is it a terrible feature. First off, the whole different dlc bundles thing was a **** marketing for the profit. Second, this means Evolve is now a pay-to-win. Third, $2 for and **** blue skin? Are they mad?

Conclusion; It has met same fate as Destiny and Warframe. Little to no content unless you pay. Now excuse me, I need to go to trade this piece of crap in to pre-order Batman:AK

All you fell in this game is an annoying loading balance on every little things u do, beginning with the jet pack, have you been annoyed with Red Dead Redemption's horse game play ? Here it's worse, because u'll be blocked down cliffs more than once, for a long time. The trap system is a confession of an unfinished, undecided game play, seated between two chairs, it doesn't assume the promise of the big maps (already said: not enough interactions with it). To end it, the frame rate is too low, and the hit box is seriously too approximate. Expand

    "Evolve" truly surprised me...

I never thought I could review a game lower than COD: AW or Destiny. I tried playing Evolve for about six hours, but was so bored that I couldn't force myself any further. When I first heard about the game, I found it to be an interesting concept. However, the "hunt" (not much hunting involved) isn't very exciting and the game handles poorly. The

When I first heard about the game, I found it to be an interesting concept. However, the "hunt" (not much hunting involved) isn't very exciting and the game handles poorly. The lack of fluidity and intuitiveness in the controls reminded me of a crappy 3rd party developed game (not all are crappy, but many are).

It is $20 Alpha stage game on steam. There are very few maps and characters (unless you buy skins), nothing to unlock, no customization, and not much of a reason to play. It literally has less content than Destiny (which, less face it, was extremely lacking in content).

Not worth $60 + the $60 skins if you happened to buy that crap. I honestly can't even recommend it for a rental, unless your insanely bored for a weekend.

Incredibly barebones game. It's more like a demo. It's like an extra mode of a Call of Duty game, but sold as a full price game. Also it looks bad, messy and drab. It has some innovative elements, but in this case the flaws clearly overshadow any positive aspects.

When first started this game it was verry fun. First time playing this type of game. Good graphics and fun innovation for me. Afther playing couple of times it became boring and the servers don't work well. This makes me diapointed and a waist of money. Game was good for 10 hours. afther that it just became dull.

With the right people on your side, Evolve can be a surprising blast. However, get lumped with utter idiots, or the shoddy AI, and it quickly becomes very, very frustrating. [Issue#254, p.66]

At launch, it feels neutered, and far too inconsistent to establish a lasting dominance on the multiplayer scene. [Apr 2015, p.110]
