Okay I'm 20 hours into the game, I just defeated Frieza and I believe it's time to review the game.

What critics are criticizing is basically the "blandness and similarity" in side quests, but what they fail to understand that most of those side quests are linked to an old character from the first Dragon Ball which puts a big wide smile on my face and brings up those nostalgia vibes.

What critics are criticizing is basically the "blandness and similarity" in side quests, but what they fail to understand that most of those side quests are linked to an old character from the first Dragon Ball which puts a big wide smile on my face and brings up those nostalgia vibes. All of them are fetch quests? Nope, and even if they are, I'm gladly doing it, it makes me happy to fly around and live in the world of Dragon Ball.

Battle? This game is very oriented towards PVE, and its very true to the story, it means Vegeta is difficult as hell, it means Frieza is difficult as hell, it means you obliterate Frieza when you turn into Super Saiyan. Every character that is playable with, or playable against, has a different set of moves, animations, comments, aura, and uniqueness. One single physical attack button? Hell yes and it's perfect, I'm sick of those "light attack-strong attack" or "punch-kick" fighting games. One button is enough to make a combo and that gives room for other actions. Transformation on the fly is awesome. Support characters control is awesome.

Intermission is bland? Hell no, there's lots of activities to do and it feels like a vacation after so much battles in each arc, you relax during that time, collect orbs, fish, cook, train, increase your level, learn new moves, and talk to every single character, because they always have something new to say, go out and discover Dragon Ball memories, see how Krillin is reading adult magazines and Launch turns blond when she sneezes.

All in all, this is the best Dragon Ball experience ever, it has everything I want and more, I couldn't ask for any change, controls are difficult? You just need time to get used to them and then you become a pro, didn't Goten had issues with flying! Ki detection is great, power levels are true to the anime.

Don't read those stupid IGN, GameSpot and whatever reviews, they are reviewing it as a game, but this isn't any game, this is a Dragon Ball game, see what Dragon Ball fans are saying, go buy the game if you haven't yet, you won't regret it, actually you will regret it if you don't.

Thanks Bandai Namco and Thanks to Cyberconnect 2. Great job guys.

As a fanboy, who has been following Dragonball series since childhood, I will rate it as 9/10

Otherwise, it is somewhere around 7-8/10.

    Who should get it?

If you are new to Dragonball ball series or never ever watched Dragonball anime, then get it blindly, since story has been highlighted very well.

    Who can skip it?

Well, fanboys like me will definitely buy it without giving a second thought. But still, if you have played all the Dragonball based games in past, and watched each and every saga of Dragonball, and want to save your money , I will suggest you to wait until price drop. :)

DBZ Kakarot is a worthy installment for all fans of the franchise. To me this game is a 8.5. As usual I go with my gut feeling whether to go up and down. DBZ Kakarot is a worthy installment for all fans of the franchise. To me this game is a 8.5. As usual I go with my gut feeling whether to go up and down. This time I would say it is a worthy 9 for fans and a decent 8 for casual visitors to the series. I ve been playing DBZ Kakarot on my PS4 Pro with SSD and will give you some heads-up with my personal game experience.

First of all I have to admit that the DragonBall franchise has been a large part of my childhood, still I did not play any of the predecessors because I m not that much of a button-masher-fighting-game-dude. This time I tried my luck because the emphasize seemed to be more on the world and a bit less on the combat.

The presentation of the game is very good. The visual experience, the effects, the sound and also the voice acting is really really good. You can choose between english and japanese audio which is a worthy addition for fans and might be a let down for people not able to speak or understand english at least. The loading times from saves, starting the game or warping around the semi open world was surprisingly good. It took mere seconds before the loading was done. During my game experience I did not encounter larger frame drops although there seemed to be very minor texture popups during cut-scenes, which is a bit surprising considering I used a pretty decent SSD. I still want to add that this happened scarcely and did not interfere largely with the game experience. The only bug I encountered was that sometimes I was not able to talk to people if fights happened next to them. So I had to save and reload in place to fix it. Nothing too bad overall.

Gameplay toggles between traversing the semi open world, doing story tasks and sidequests, grabbing orbs to level up or gather new skills during training ground missions. The game loop feels a little bit dull and misses a great opportunity to give this game a real open world touch although it is not a complete let down. For me being not a fighting expert the mechanics are okay. You control your character with a handful of skill buttons and can toggle to party members skills with shoulder buttons. Mix up skills are also available making the fighting experience interesting. You dont have to mash combos as you would in full blown fighting games. More or less you mash between dashes, strikes and punches, build up your ki and fire designated skills at the enemy. Whether that is enough for you might be very subjective. It feels mashing heavy at times but for me still sufficiently complex. Some boss fights might be a little bit too hard for casual players. To me it felt largely okay.

Fights go in different alterations such as 1v1, 1v2, 1vX or XvY, so there is also some variety here and in free roam mode you can also customize your party you want to go out with. The game feels a little drawn out at times quite as you would expect it knowing the old series. Still I have to say it was a worthy experience because you can enjoy the stages of DBZ in a more direct and somewhat condensed feeling without loosing too much of its original depth. Everything you loved (and probably hated) is in here for you to re-discover.

One of the biggest let downs for me (as it was back then) is that the game is pretty cut in terms of gore and violence. They tried to manage it well with setting decent scene cuts but for hardcore fans this might be a re-ocurring nightmare of old times where you had to go with imported versions to see the actual movie experience. I wished they had an option for this or an uncut version to buy because it made me really sad to live through the disappointment again. Decide for yourself whether this is a no-go or not but it is to me also a deciding factor to why I choose the 8 on my side.

I would recommend this game for franchise fans and people who enjoy semi casual fighting combined with semi open world story elements. Maybe grab it at some discount but I feel that it is a game that has a decent production value. It would ve been kinda cool if they took an even more RPG-ish approach to leveling or evolving your character because it feels overly simplistic at times. Knowing the franchise the next appearance might be already in the works and who knows what will come next.

A Dragon Ball game where you FINALLY could train that strong that you could one shot most enemy who are much weaker than you just like in the Anime itself so the point of training makes finally a sense.

A Tip for beginner. When you are 5 lvl above the enemy on the map, you can finish the fight without even starting it by Super Speed flying into them. This method saves you allllllllot of time lvling up your character from the beginning of the game. If you love Dragon Ball then this is in fact a MUST HAVE.

This is what I've always wanted as a Dragon Ball Z game since the PS2 days back in 02 and 03. It's a super easy game and the RPG elements aren't complicated or deep at all. But I love it nonetheless. Exploring the world of DBZ is fascinating and so friggin cool. I'd highly recommend for any DBZ fan.

This game was a pleasant surprise for me, since Legacy of Goku for the GBA I've been waiting for a proper dbz themed RPG game and DBZ: Kakarot is that game.
It spans all sagas from the anime and a few nods to the movies and secondary characters like Tao Pai Pai and Pilaf.
While the main story is very well made with beautiful cutscenes and almost an 1:1 copy of the anime, the optional

The combat is simple but fun and intuitive. It really fulfills the power fantasy of being a powerful sayian.
All in all, if you are a devoted DBZ fan, this is a MUST BUY even in full price. If you are not that big of a fan, wait for a sale.

My main complaint with this game is that it feels a little bit unpolished on certain aspect. I mean, we have to be realistic and look at the fact that the Japanese cast isn’t getting any younger and that it would be very unlikely to have a Dragon Ball game of this type again. I would have wait another year or two without complaining for this game to be the definitive fully polished and detailed Dragon Ball experience.

If your a Dragon Ball fan you will greatly enjoy the game. If your not you might want to wait for a sale. As I played on a 2nd gen ps4 I experienced minor hiccups while the game loaded the world after each "episode" for about 3-5 seconds the game would freeze up.Hopefully the downright horrid camera can be fixed in an update.

Secondly, the side quests are limited with regards to their availability. Each open at a particular “episode” in the story and closes by the ending of either that or a few subsequent ones (usually within 1-3 eps). This makes it nigh impossible to return to and obtain the the rewards therein (some of them truly help in powering up and exploration too!). However, this adds to the replay value of the story and each side quest time window is accessible through the story menu. The side quests are also quite repetitive and usually involve a Kamehameha to the face but are nevertheless a treat for fans of the series. The fighting mechanic is also limited in the number and types of combos allowed yet explosive enough to include various types of attacks (KI, vanishing, physical, homing, etc). The story is definitely one to cherish and relive with multiple playable characters, part formations and exploration that gives a taste of being a Z warrior. Here’s to hoping that cyber connect improves some features with an update and releases an improved sequel/DLC involving the “super” saga. Expand

Saludos!!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i cant honestly believe all the 10/10 im seeing have you guys never played any other games or just fan boys to the end? I get being a fan , I love dragonball and games, but if you care about something you tell it when its done wrong, not pretend its all good and live in denial.

the fighting mechanics are weak its like xenoverse had a regression of mechanics, all bosses have super armour and all training is 3 on 1 with them spamming you with projectiles, there is no challenge outside of that, most fights consist of one combo over and over and spamming special moves.
the "rpg" elements are little to none and have little impact in the game its a action game with ridiculous numbers that don't mean a lot when you really look at it,

some of the visuals are amazing and really show what this game is capable of like recomes ultra fighting bomber or vegeta loosing his temper at cell are 10/10 when it comes to visuals I cant deny that, but so many other story critical moments where either low effort cut scenes not fully rendered or straight up skipped and told to us by the announcer while we get a slide show if we get that, the recome scene got more love than the goku vs majin vegeta bit I mean...…….

we was sold on it having new info to the series but any fan like me will know pretty much all this stuff and anything they do add like bulmas mums name are pointless and not worth your money

the game called kakarot but it skips most of his time in the anime and focuses on gohan and the other cast, I think you play as goku the least in the story, its a misnomer it should have been called gohan.

all in all a very average game if you never played a dragonball z game you might get some enjoyment out of playing the story but any older fans will get bored and frustrated with this game fast, as the combat is boring and gets stale fast and they cut so much its painful to sit though after you feel you been robbed of a great moment

What lets it down is the side content, with the exception of a handful of quests. There is a lazy over-reliance on fetch quests to fill out the world and it can become painfully boring to have to go through these, which you have to if you want to collect D tokens (the currency for learning new moves).
As a rule for developers, if you wouldn't want to do it yourself why make the players do it?.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. You really want this to be a good game. You do. It looks beautiful, the game play is fun. Huge open world. But it sucks. It's literally one of the worst video games I've ever played in my life. I image it was programmed by a bunch of over the hill has beens. It plays like a piece of crap super Nintendo game. The controls are horrible. HORRIBLE!! Combat is boring. Spam spam spam spam. One button to do it all. And the bosses suck. First real boss you fight is Vegeta. He is not challenging to fight. But rather than fix this the "programmers" decided to have Vegeta cheat instead. Literally if you start winning the game spams and causes damage and knocks you out. You can be right in the middle of a special move, with a beam of energy with Vegeta slammed into the ground, doesn't matter YOU GET HIT instead, and then you lose you're power and can't move (something you CANNOT do to your enemy) and then one hit causes over 1000 damage. So it's practically impossible to beat him. I gave up after thirty minutes and asking myself, why am I doing this? Why am I getting frustrated on a D title game? This game isn't worth investing any time into whatsoever. I'm glad I got it on sale. Do not waste your money on this. This game sucks. I am not over exaggerating. It blows so bad. Wait, it will be free on game pass or psn. In about a year no one will be even willing to pay $5 for this hot garbage and it'll be free. Don't waste you're money. You'd be better off buy fentanyl over this. On top of the terrible 7 generation old game mechanics, the game constantly crashes. Yea, seriously, and it's not even optimized yet. This game is truly one of the worst games ever made. Made by people who used to know how to make games but didn't keep up with the times. If you're a Dragon Ball Z fan I would avoid it because it's going to put such a bad taste in your mouth its going to ruin it. Absolutely garbage. Expand

Kakarot is excellent in parts that were not shown in the anime and it adds a lot of context, now I can't imagine dbz without those Goku-Gohan father-son moments kakarot added in the begining of the game.

If we go saga by saga then saiyan saga is probably the best saga in terms of quality of content and delivery of this content. We see Goku-Gohan moments, we see growth of Gohan, we see that Piccolo was almost always around and he started to care about Gohan, we see what other fighters did before training with Kami and how Piccolo recognised their power. Nappa was a monster just like in the anime. Fight with Vegeta was done right. In short almost every key moment was done right. But other sagas were... BAD. Friezas saga gave no emotions anime game, Dodoria and Zarbon were scary in the anime, Ginyu Force was a real threat in the anime and none of that is in the game, iconic moments were all very poorly done, super saiyan was... I honestly don't even know how to express my disappointment. Cell/androids is my favorite saga in the anime, but in kakarot it's the worst saga, it's empty, SS2 Gohan is good, but before SS2 Gohan everything is so poorly done, iconic moments like introduction of Trunks, Androids, Tien blasting Cell, Final Flash, Goku vs Cell all of that was pretty much either rushed or skipped all together. Buu saga was boring until Vegito which was pretty much the end of the main story with only Kid Buu left to defeat. SS3 was skipped, majin Vegeta was not even a thing in this game.
Kakarot is a story based game that can't tell the story.

Other than main story and leveling up this game has no valuable content which really brings down the idea of even having an open world.

    For me 10.

Epic fights. Finally first Dragon Ball where you can dodge attacks like in Anime.

Story great. Side quests sometimes can be a pain in the a** but that is not a bigger issues.
Animations, Music - everything in Dragon Ball climate!

Can't wait to play next DLC's!

An action rpg with visuals and a system that allows you to really feel like evolving like in the series, it's fantastic! Despite the numerous flaws, Kararot still offers a wonderful retelling of the main story, above-average graphics, and a great soundtrack, so it’s worth picking up for established and new fans of the series alike.

Even though DBZ: Kakarot retells the same story the franchise has been telling for decades, it manages to do so in creative new ways for hardcore anime fans.

A very few games can compare to Kakarot in terms of sheer love towards the original series and storytelling qualities. Not without its set of flaws that leave only regret not being even greater, Kakarot still manages to be a great game for fans. No, scratch that. It manages to be an amazing game! May they not stop here, and deliver more and more of love-letters like this. If it goes in the right direction, the next one could definitely be legendary.
