Do not buy it if game play is important to you, because in this case it is just not fun. Have in mind that THIS GAME IS NO METAL GEAR SOLID V. Buy it if you're into narrative with good graphics. That's it.

Going through the game and trying to finish it was one of the most boring and sometimes frustrating things I ever done. I strongly believe that someone should’ve stood up to Hideo Kojima and told him the truth.

The music was great, I loved all the songs. The graphs were astonishing but rapidly contrasted with a messy menu where a lot of things were put together causing the user to get lost and wondering what to do, they tried to alíviate that by adding long descriptions to the settings and features, which made it worst.

Every time you finished a quest there was a long sequence of boring videos that made me nodded off more than a few times.

Anyway, I praise that Kojima dared to try to do something different instead of sticking to the convencional and I hope others creators dare to do the same.

Nerveless, as in the meaning of “trial and error” where you try and face the possibility of error, this was a failure.

There are many things in gaming that have given me trouble over the years. Grinding towards a seemingly unattainable item, getting inexplicably lost, or trying to beat a boss on the hardest difficulty before inevitably realizing that I suck and have to go back to casual.

One thing that has never been on that list until Death Stranding: Walking. Few things make you appreciate the art of staying upright like falling over for the 20th time and watching your cargo break and scatter.

From the beginning, the game starts off slowly and painfully. You don’t know what’s going on, you can barely navigate the map without tumbling down a hillside, and there are ghost-like “BTs” roaming the map which you are defenseless against, and they’re ready to f**k your day up and ruin some poor SOBs pizza delivery.

A few hours in though, the game finally starts to turn a corner. Things that were once dreadfully tedious and painful suddenly become easier as you slowly acquire new gear to help you along your way. And just when you think you’ve gotten all the gear you could possibly get, a new item shows up at the exact moment when you were getting fed up with something. And then that happens 10 more times. Each time adding layer upon layer to the experience, slowly building what felt like an empty experience and gameplay into a deep, rich, nuanced journey.

And throughout this journey, the narrative of Sam the Delivery Man and the “Death Stranding” world he inhabits envelopes you and draws you into its many, many layers of mystery. Although there are perhaps a few holes, the overall narrative of Death Stranding is incredibly deep and complex. It’s a story that keeps on giving. And giving. And giving. So much so that when I thought I was close to the end of the game, it turns out there were still 10 hours left to go.

The ending did feel a little bit drawn out (almost two hours of cut scenes!!!!). It might have been nice for some parts of the plot to wrap up earlier as the story progressed. But there was understandably a lot of narrative to unpack.

Other than that, the fighting and gunplay left a little bit to be desired, but this wasn’t the focus of the game and there are so so many other FPS titles you could play if that’s what you’re looking for.

Death Stranding is shallow and empty (by design), until it isn’t. In the end, the overwhelming amount of satisfaction you will feel as you finally start to conquer the empty, cruel world that you inhabit is worth the effort. Oh yeah and then there’s that test tube baby strapped to your chest the whole time.

I have to say the more balanced reviews are correct, this is a very interesting game but it absolutely is not for everyone, it's very difficult to describe to be honest, the basic gameplay is indeed take this from a to b, and repeat but it's just so much more than that. The on the fly planning, route making, stealth, combat, asset management all make it so much more than just a postman simulator.

I've got to say it is a slow burner of a game, almost an open world puzzle if you like. I suspect if your interests are more in the twitch shooter or sport sim direction this game would be hell on earth, and that is in no way a dig at the guys that play those genre, it's a talent I don't have.

It's possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on the PS4, the controls are tight (the vehicles aside) and it's music is excellent.

I'd recommend picking it up, but if you ain't sure just wait it out and pick it up cheap in a years time. It's worth a look at least surely?

This game premise is at the very best light EXPERIMENTAL maybe suited for some indie ten dollar game, but utterly ridiculous in a full priced AAA game.

The "not for everyone" label that every favorable review has given only is but an euphemism for it not being an AAA. Butit did had the AAA budget, that's whythe graphics are so good (and because of the graphics I've given it a score of 1)

The game only lives on hype.

    KOJIMA: Hold my beer.

Some people say that it's stupid, because it's about inventory management and not action. And that's why I liked it so much. It's "oldschool", where you have to think a bit about what you are going against in this particular mission, instead of just rushing in. I guess oldschool gamers will appreciate it more than the younger gamers.

    The game has it's flaws:
    - boss fights are not that challenging
    - the edge is taken off a bit when you are equipped with weapons
    - the game is linear and doesn't that much encourage you to do side quests, as they seem unworthy, for the most part

    But it has it's pro's:
    - visuals
    - cast
    - story (for the most part)
    - music (!)
    - the mechanics
    - being a completely different thing

Death Stranding shines as something different, althrough very much Kojim-ish to it's core. It's a welcome breath of fresh air blown straight into Konami's face.

Instead of buying a 10th FIFA or 20th COD - buy Death Stranding. If you won't like, at least you will experience something else. And that's always worth your $ and time.

This is probably the most disappointed I've been with a game in years. Like many others, after the cancellation of Silent Hills, I was looking forward to seeing what Kojima would do next. What we got is something that would have been better off as a movie instead of a video game; Death Stranding is proof that Kojima is a wannabe movie director in a game designer's body.

What we got is something that would have been better off as a movie instead of a video game; Death Stranding is proof that Kojima is a wannabe movie director in a game designer's body.

The most egregious flaw of DS is the gameplay, and its lack of variety. This is not meant to be an action-packed game, so to justify the utter lack of interesting things happening during your deliveries, Kojima saw fit to "gameify" otherwise mundane elements taken for granted in other games. Now, you must make sure Sam is balanced with rudimentary, occasional inputs and ensure what you're carring isn't too heavy so that you don't fall forward up a steep slope and lose all your packages. Essentially, your means of traversal is the gameplay loop. There is shooting, such as during encounters with MULEs (vagabonds addicted to delivering, for some reason) but these moments are few and far between. DS props up this lack interesting interactivity with additions from other players appearing in your world; for instance, a ladder you set across a river may appear in another player's game, and vice versa. It's a good concept, but not enough of one to distract from the boredom of Death Stranding's frankly samey-looking open world.

The game's highlights are its BT encounters and MULE encounters, as this is when the stakes are raised forthe durability of your packages. The former is dealt with through certain ranged items fairly easily later in the game, and MULEs can be taken out through stealth, hand to hand combat (which is nothing more than mashing the attack button) or gunning them down. These moments make DS actually feel like a game. They aren't free from criticism either, however. MULEs are supposed to be obsessed with delivering, but you don't ever see them actually trying to deliver anything. I fully expected to see MULEs out in the world, perhaps dying in front of me or already dead, necessitating the player to incinerate their bodies so that a voidout might be prevented, but this never happened. And that's the main issue with DS: not much happens where and when it should.

As a game, an interactive medium, one would expect the story to unfold through moments of gameplay. Not with DS, the main story beats, character interactions, and narrative progression almost always happen during non-interactive cutscenes. This gives the game a feeling of just putting up with the chore of the main gameplay to watch the interesting story unfold in the game's inner movie. And to DS' credit, the story can be intetesting and it does have some decent characters. But as a game, DS fails. Later in the game, travel is made more convenient through trucks, ziplines, etc. However, this speaks to me as major evidence that the main thing you do in the game, walking, is boring enough that the game eventually rewards you by skipping it.

Perhaps basing a game around player interconnection is a great idea, as shown with Demon's Souls. Death Stranding, unfortunately, is not the showcase for this idea as it lacks in the very thing it should be: a video game. And I think Kojima couldn't be happier about this, as he edges closer and closer to the world of non-interactivity in Hollywood. If you want to play a good open world game from this year with variety to its core gameplay loop, and an interesting story with good characters, play Days Gone instead.

This is a game that is not for everybody, but it's a AAA game that goes where games like Shadow of the Colossus or Journey went before. Providing you with a solitude experience of contemplation and amazement. And no, it's not just a walking simulator. It gives you so many tools as your go through the game, you can create roads, ride bikes, travel through zip lines that you can place wherever you want and everything you do is at the same time connected with other people who left ladders or ropes for you in the way. It feels like a world connected even when you are by yourself as the game plays a lovely song from "Low Roar".

This is the game for people who like hiking, sci-fi, and horror. Yes, you fight monsters, but while that is part of the game with a lot of spectacle, you will be wishing to be spending your time o delivering packages rather than fighting. Why? Because the weight system feels great, your decision making on what to take with you, will you take the difficult path or the longer route using a truck? How many deliveries can you take with you? Your decision and how you travel is up to you, and that sense of freedom and exploration is something few games can provide you.

And the vistas....oh y god, the vistas. Well if Horizon Zero Dawn was like an Avatar beautiful World, and RDR2 was like a realistic beautiful look at our old western with beautiful landscapes. DS is like going to Marks, Venus, and every planet you think about it. I know it's supposed to be the earth after the Death Stranding event, but still. It loks bautiful and otherworldly.

All that said this is not a game for those who want everything from the start. If you don't have patience I can see yourself getting bored. But if you're up to the challenge, just like hiking, when you get to the summit (8+ hours into the game) you'll start to get why this game is special.

With that out of the way this game is one of the best and probably the most original game concept of 2019 period, sure it has a WTF story line ?, and infact thats what makes it so good, the concepts and ideas grafted into this game are nothing short of brilliant. It is fresh and original and no one that has gamed for 30 years can say otherwise the graphics are amazing and the facial graphics are the best I've seen ever in any game developed EVER, did I mention the soundtrack also nice as Sam can replay the tracks anytime in game you like. If you complete all the side missions as well this game has easily 100 hrs playing scope. Although it does get long winded and monotonous near the last act of the game the journey is worth it. The core gameplay is what makes this game enjoyable. And the multiplayer aspect (heavily borrowed from Dark Souls and exceptionally well expanded) really shines.

I'd still give this game an 8 despite the writing, however there's another negative aspect that needs to be addressed. It's the controls and the aiming. It might work perfectly fine for the delivery gameplay; but not for the bossfights. You strafe like you're ice skating and the aiming is too floaty, making targeting an enemy unnecessarily awkward.

There was this fight where you had to dodge the enemy's attack and you can tell that the controls was not designed for such occasion.

Excellent in almost every way and is just let down by lack of depth to mission requirements and no skill tree or way to spend xp(likes) so getting xp is pointless. That said the gameplay is a excellent mix of exploration, inventory management strategy and a risk vs reward terrain traversal game loop. Also dark souls style hint sharing with ability to share building and items adds a community feel to the game. Only gripes about it are that it becomes a bit repetitive in the last half of the game and its difficulty curve is weird. It starts off really difficult and then gets easier as it goes on in large sections of the game and you dont really have a need for your cool new toys by the last half of the game except for some excellent mountain missions. Also no replay value because once you have explored the map there is no point playing anymore, i found myself only doing story missions and no side ones as I just wanted to go to the next area. 8.5/10 but on here a ten to counteract the zero bombs. Deserves a quick playthrough by all serious gamers as its very unique and the world is very immersive. Expand

You know all those boring fetch missions that you hate doing in other games? Death Stranding is nothing but fetch missions. It's so tedious to move around and deliver items. The story makes very little logic sense. The combat is absolutely dismal with the dumbest AIs who have horrible pathing and just sit around waiting for you to shoot them. It's a badly-designed game with a AAA budget.

Death strandings gameplay reminds me of golf. Not mechanicaly or requiring similair skills, but purely its ability to ruin an otherwise pleasant walk. The opening chapters intruduces a beautiful world that begs to be explored, and graphically speaking this game is probably the best I've ever seen. The opening chapters are all about delivering objects on foot, and with minimal obstacles the game is at least an enjoyable walk. When you are running around the barren landscapes theres something cathartic and relaxing to be enjoyed here. In addition the soundtrack kicks in during quiet moments which adds to the experience with some of the best music Ive heard recently in a game.

As the game progresses, new obstacles are added to the game, BT enemies (stealth vs stealth encounters) will slow you down and try to damage your cargo. Mules will try to steal your cargo and terrorists will try to kill you. Rain will come down in droves (aka "timefall") which will damage your gear and cargo. Snow will cause you to move slowly, and damage cargo as well. These obstacles are all introduced to the game to add variety, peril and challenge. But all they do is spoil this games only true gameplay strength; a good walk.

Whenever these obstacles show up, you are rarely in the mood for their nonsense. They are either irritating to the point of discouraging the player to even bother, or they waste your time in the most insulting way outside of a mobile phone EA game. The quests require a lot of backtracking, tedious marches or annoying drives (hitting tiny boulders causes the vehicle to grind to a halt, and they are very difficult to control). Absolutely no part of this amounts to fun. Stealth and combat is serviceable, though , but nothing special. The game would be better without them. Dealing with these obstacles can be easier with the right gear, to the point of it being a simple lock and key mechanic. If, however, you dare to not carry each of the right keys then your in for a bad time. In a game where carry weight is a significant factor, carrying all the right gear is tedious and actively discouraged. As well as unintentional backtracking (through mission failures etc) there is a significant amount of intended backtracking. In a game thats already far too long, this padding is entirely unecessary.

Multiplayer aspects are strong, where players can use structures built by others to skip parts of the game. The fact that this is a celebrated feature shows how weak the gameplay is.

The main hook of the game is its narrative. The story is very unique here, and keeps the player wanting to find out more about the world.
The dialogue, acting and writing is generally very good. If it wasn't, then this reviewer would not have put up with the rest of the game, and it would remain uncompleted. The story can come across as pretentious at times but that is my main gripe.

To conclude, music, graphics, story and multiplayer are all excellent. Gameplay is king however, and in this aspect Death Stranding falls down dramatically. It wastes your time and overall the payoff isnt worth the effort. I cannot reccomend this game, however i can reccomend watching the cutscenes or a stort synopsis. If you do insist on playing it, put it on easy and run past all the obstacles.

This is an utterly unique game and if you let it take you in, it's easily the most immersive experience you will have in a video game. At times the interface and menu's are difficult, but when you realize all their quirks, you come to realize the controls are exactly what they need to be. It's a complex and relaxing game most of the time, and it takes a lot as a player to work through, but all it's difficulties and challenges highlight the one thing this game does that no other ever has, and that is theme. The theme in this game is the connections between people, and every design quirk, plot point, and arduous mountain climb all work to emphasize that theme. It's a lonely journey, but the connections you make along the way will give you a sense that it was all worth it. This isn't a game that gratifies you, this is a journey you take that pays itself off immensely in the end. Easily the best crafted ending I've seen in a game.
The most important thing I look at a game is how it stays with you, and will I play it again. I equate it most with another great narrative game whos gameplay was not enjoyable, "The Last of Us" but the difference is, the payoff in this is much more profound. This is a game that you won't ever forget, and eventually will draw you in again. In the Last of us, after the damn super zombies get shivved for the last time, I never wanted to play it again. I remember the Giraffe and the end, but nothing about the play really drew me in for a 2nd run. It's impact is totally on a first go round. This one will compel me to play again long into the future.
Yes, it can be a grind, like almost every game these days, whether it's collecting pointless garbage in any grand theft auto or any monotonous deathmatches in any first person shooter you play online. The difference is the rewards for the grind are truly there in game. These continuous missions build the relationship with each person you meet, and the rewards for maximizing that all make the journey easier. Every improvement is a blessing that you earn with hard work, and by the end you turn it into a fun Disney ride for every travel. But you have to earn it through work and with the connections you build in the game, and with the players whom leave stuff to help you out.
This isn't a game that gratifies you, its a profound amount of work for quite the compelling reward. It's a plot of **** nonsense, that makes total sense and ties together perfectly because every aspect follows one cohesive theme. This is a game for everyone, it's value comes through work, through challenges, and there is utterly nothing else like it nor will there ever be. Most negative critiques I read have complaints that show me the people didn't actually play it, just either watched someone else play it or quit because it doesn't have enough blinking lights and bright colors to satisfy the animal brain.
So go into it with an open mindset, put the weight of the world on your impossibly strong back, and take a journey that will bring you somewhere you will never experience again, and will certainly never forget.

Game play: The main point is as everyone have already saw, the deliver of different types of cargo from point A to point B. This however is mixed with: environmental hazard, physical and realistic reactions to the terrain that no other AAA has and that apply to both Sam and his enemies. Stealth, gun play and a whole weaponry that goes from boleadora pistol, assault rifles, grenades until missile launchers. All of this you can use or build, together with all this you can use or build, along with shelters of different types, bridges, stairs, climbing anchors, different types of exoskeletons that help improve your performance when moving in different kinds of terrain, thermal patches, gas masks, cars, motorcycles, in short; that the game is giving you new options to overcome the new challenges that it proposes every hour or hour and a half. So to everyone out there saying that the game is all cinematic and no game play well, go and play it (also this is one of Kojima's game with less cinematics that, at least, I remember).

Finally, the game has multiple bosses (those that seemed too easy, I think a weak point in the game is the absence of a real challenge regarding the fights, at least in the normal difficulty).
All of the above is presented with a really compelling and original story, marvelous graphics and NO DLC. For all of this reasons I think Death Stranding is one of the best games of the year and one of the best I've played (and I played a lot). Few to no one creator try to sell such a risky proposal and that is something that all gamers should value.

I get it. I really do. It's definitely not for everyone out there. It takes a certain level of patience to play. Not the kind of patience that everyone has. There's no question that games SHOULD be fun, right? Otherwise what's the point. But this game is clearly trying to invoke a certain feeling from you, albeit frustration, anger, exhuastion, sadness, etc. and I think it's gonna resonate in various ways for all kinds of people who are open to try it. You still may not like it but if you're ever looking for a completely unique, original experience then look no further. But me? I love this game. I really do. Yes, you're delivering packages but there's much more to it than that and delivering these packages can be strangely addicting and satisfying. It's a strategy game in a lot of ways and the way it implements multiplayer is nothing short of brilliant. I found myself building structures to help not only myself but others, often having my structures overwhelmed with likes given to me by other people who encountered them. It invoked a great feeling and it was awesome when someone would leave a helpful thing for me, especially when I needed it at the time. To me, THAT was what I found fun. The passion put into the game is undeniable and it shows. It truly feels like a long journey and it's very immersive due to the sound design and visuals being top notch. The narritive, I think is well told, very intriguing and clearly has a message that it wants to convey, though expect it to be in a very "Kojima" manner, but nontheless, easy enough to understand within the rules that universe establishes. Cutscenes CAN get lengthy from time to time but I couldn't help but be mesmerized during each one. They're shot so expertly and well acted that I was hooked to every scene, which was also fantastically emphasised by the AMAZING soundtrack this game has. Both the Original score and the songs borrowed from other artists simply just works for this...That's all I can say. I'll be walking along, making a delivery and a certain feeling will be going through my head and this song will suddenly come on and it just fits that moment perfectly and helps reinforce the way I happen to be thinking and feeling at that particular point in the game, with the environment I'm trekking through. If you just play along and let it do it's thing, it makes for some really special moments on your journey. I've downloaded at least 10 songs from this game onto my phone. A mix of the OST and the borrowed songs. Music is just perfectly implemented every time and I've never seen anything quite like it with a game. It's special. I've been frustrated by the game at times, yes. It's not perfect at all and I can see why it's so polarizing amongst the community of people who have actually played it, but I couldn't help but be on the side that loves it a lot. I played a 110 hours by the time I was done attaining the Platinum trophy for it and I'm still thinking about the game long after it ended. So many things I truly loved about it. If you ever bring yourself to give this game a chance, go for it. It honestly might surprise you, as it did with me. Expand

Added this one to my masterpiece collection (GTA5, all Metal Gear, Red Death R., Metro, Last of Us). You really need to take your time to enjoy this game. I personally turned off the online mode because I didn't like to see bridges, etc. poping up to help me. Don't need to rush, plan your deliveries, you have multiple ways to accomplish them. In this game you can't carry everything you see. Objects have weight, dimensions and affect your performance, movements. This is why this game is so revolutionary, I wondered why no one ever thought about this before.

There are no perfect games that would fit everyone wishes, so don't criticize just because you don't like 1 or 2 things. The overall experience is really satisfying, I'll remember this game forever as one of the best I've played.

    Thanks Kojima team.

Expand

Death stranding is definitely my Game of The Year. Let's dive in!

    Quick Summary:
An open-world game with a very (almost) empty world (akin to games like Last Guardian, Shadow of the Colossus, Ico etc). Due to some environmental dangers, people live in underground bunkers and rely on porters to help deliver items. it is not totally empty because you occasionally run into other ''porters', Mules/thieves, trigger happy terrorists, BTs. You are tasked with reconnecting the world and reconnect America while you experience some epic story-telling, ADDICTIVE gameplay, soothing score and satisfying ending.

    Plot: 10/10
    - Spot on!! absolutely engaging Sci-Fi story. It is very heavy on the sci-fi genre, with crosses into 'horror' and fantasy. The storytelling is deep! Every cutscene, even the tiny memory flashes all tie-up in the end.
    - The story develops slowly, suspenseful but intentionally to for you to draw up conclusions and conspiracies - before some crazy - WTF reveal moments that will keep you gobsmacked and emotional (due to some head-swelling moments). Feel free to jump into conclusions, that is the point.
    - There is an explanation for everything! (think of one thing you don't see or can't do; 24 hr cycle? no animals? game-over and continues? there are explanations.

    Gameplay: 11/10
Now, if you do not like games like "Shadow of the Colossus" or "Last Guardian", it may take a while for it to grow on you.
    - Its gameplay is highly relaxing, you move across a gorgeous landscape, discover some soothing songs and just walk, it is very relaxing.
    - FREEDOM! no pathway, you chart your own course! scale mountains, exhaust your supplies, batteries and finally completing a tough delivery can be super satisfying. This is the only OpenWorld game where I bothered about sidequests. They were addictive
    - The map is not limited, you can go as far as the lands go, there are no ships and you can't swim (so deal with waters at the end of the world).
    - Walking, staggering and balancing gameplay can be very immersive, especially on mountainous terrains.
    - Yes, the fight scenes are not engaging as such; but after some time; you realize the game is not about the fight mechanics, and you have infinite continues DOOMS. ;)
    - The strand system, oh PERFECT fit. The game throws some tough missions at you, make you suffer through a region, and then finally allows you to link the area - and you have this sense of relief! well, executed.

    Graphics: 11/10
Best looking game on PS4 this year, motion capture are super detailed; You can tell these are seasoned actors; they really relieve the characters they play. It makes the long cutscenes really interesting to watch.
The world is detailed!!! lush grees, drylands, rocks. Change of terrain when BTs get you! awesome.

    Sound: 10/10
The songs in this game are really soothing; usually discovered in very quiet and wide areas; camera pans out to let you absorb the details, then the music comes on. This gives it a really aesthetic feel. Perhaps some of the songs are average, but the way they are presented. Good Job!

    CONCLUSION:
You cannot enjoy this game by watching someone play it. You have to experience it yourself to really feel the immersion. I love it and finally, I get it cannot be for everyone. We all have our tastes.

This game is definitely not for you if:
    - You are impatient
    - You hate hiking
    - You hate Shadow of Colossus / Last Guardian.
    - You are big on hack/slash.

Dive in, experience it; whatever the case! They will be waiting for you on the beach!

I had a slight problem with the pacing of the game though, there were moments when many of my actions felt repetitive, story started to feel boring for its simplicity during one of the first chapters for a long period of time but the speed caught up eventually and things started to be interesting again. Of course there is always the option of doing main missions only for an uninterrupted experience. To sum up, if you have the time, then this game is definitely for you. Expand

I can't forget Death Stranding and I miss this feeling when I traveled this world with silence and peaceful joy, and lister to Low Roar music. Masterpiece, but not for everyone. Kojima's desperation to be recognized as the penultimate artist has never been more desperate, and never more apparent, which has resulted in a discombobulated mess of a game that has many high-points, and as many, if not more, low-points. The fanaticism of his worshipers doesn't allow them to view the game objectively, and therefore gives this game a lot more praise than it deserves in many areas. The pace trudges along asking more than any other game from the average player just to get through the opening hours. It almost blatantly disrespects your time and does so all while constantly preaching it's message of unity and teamwork of a united country, whilst relying upon the work of one man. The plot holes are numerous and the environments are boring, offering little diversity in gameplay throughout the entire experience. At the same time, once you get into the role and start diving into the story, it can sometimes be somewhat enjoyable and rewarding. It just doesn't always make that an easy task. Certain sessions can leave you feeling exhausted by the end, and it's hard to tell if that comes from a sense of accomplishment and conquering adversity, or if the banality of it all is just that mentally taxing to stay immersed within. However, under no circumstances whatsoever is this a perfect game. It's flaws are numerous and the only thing saving it from being trashed into oblivion is Kojima's name. It's also not the absolute worst experience that I've ever had in gaming. I can't wholeheartedly recommend this game to everyone, but if you're looking for an interesting experience and committed to fully diving into a peculiar gameplay style with many repetitive loops and some glaring plot-holes, this might be something worth exploring. If nothing else, I'd highly recommend buying it on a deep sale if you're not 100% certain that it's the game for you. At least then, if you don't like it, you won't feel like you're losing out on that much money in the process. Expand

    - In large part because it subverts and avoids so many familiar, predictable tropes, DS is original and occasionally inspiring. The new trope of endless comical-dangerous delivery tasks will wear thin on many players after 4-10 hours.

    - Apparently DS was a big seller in japan. Apparently Japan gamers engaged with creating-carrying ridiculously tall stacks of boxes; then, fighting the natural environment to move forward with these over almost impossible terrains. Maybe in Japan, the comical nature of moving while balancing tall stacks of boxes was funnier than in the States.

    - I vote DS's digital face performances far and away the best in games this year and maybe ever so far in games. The camera lingers on faces and for me as a guy, the long takes with the four beautiful women's faces never got old. It's that good.

    - Need a new set of metaphysics? The game sells a complex new hologram of metaphysics. It's unlike mainstream or even valid esoteric metaphysics. It's also not New Age. There's lots of uneccessary swear words. It is still atheistic. The many new and unexplained terms alone can do you in. "All The Terms You Need To Know To Start Death Stranding" by NICK STRAUB on GameInformer.com will save you hours of head-scratching, if you intend to understand the game.

    - DS is a technical marvel. HOWEVER be warned, you will spend 50% OR MORE of your play time tweaking things on inventory and equipment screens. I kid you not.

Death Stranding keeps the bizarre art direction from MGS4 but does not knock you down with it, nor has oddly annoying enemies like MGS4.

I feel the art direction and design is more focused here in Death Stranding. Themes of death, pollution of the environment, crude oil, and gender roles are here, and expressed in ways that make you think. Also apparently the theme of loneliness is supposed to be here. Or maybe male loneliness and disconnection which is the life experience so far for the protagonist. Speaking of, the acting is very good here, especially Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux. Some of the supporting acting is good too, notably Margaret Qualley.

I feel I have to address some of the negative reviewing here as it pertains to the game and those who consume games. Writing a negative review saying you were bored or put off is one thing. However, those that are swarm down-voting the positive reviews alludes to the fact that this game indeed evokes a passionate response for better or worse (and that’s a testament to its quality). I admit I didn’t watch a lot of the trailers but at least one trailer made this game look more action-packed than it is.

However, more likely the negative reviewing is an extension of “gamergate” and there are sub-hints in the game why this might be. For one, how Norman Reedus is portrayed is almost sexually objectified. There are a lot of scenes of him near-nude and in positions which accentuate the contours of his body. Also the fact that he cares for a baby and actively enjoys it in the game likely makes him appealing for women. Also the fact that there few women characters that are scantily-clad in this game. Gone are characters like “Quiet” from MGS5. However, I think Lea Seydoux is extremely attractive and does not need to constantly show skin to see it.

So-called “man-babies” who like bullets, explosions, and objectified women are likely a large base of the negative reviewers and swarm-down voters of the positive reviews. I don’t think its actually going to shout down those including myself who are enjoying this game.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
