Story and idea is unique and interesting more so that the world is facing a pandemic right now. However, the execution is boring and monotonous. Every mules act the same way like robots. Every terrain feel copied and paste. Every job order seems meaningless and unrewarding.

Edited- Increase from 5 to 7 due to the well-thought story telling.

Death Stranding is not an action game, and if that is what you're searching for, look elsewhere. It may have some action sprinkled throughout, but this is basically a hiking game, where the goal is to send packages through a hostile terrain. You'll unlock several tools that will make traversing this terrain easier, while at the same time you'll face harder and harder obstacles. Whether it's deep rivers, large mountains, terrorists, ghosts or epic boss fights, there's always something new to keep you on your toes, and it's very rewarding to get to the other side with a well-cared package. It's not a game for the masses, like the Metal Gears were, however.

That being said, although Hideo Kojima is a great game designer, a great writer he is not. And when it comes to the story, this is Kojima at his worst. I'm not speaking of the tongue-in-cheek moments Kojima is famous for, which I find amusing even though they do often mess with the story's tone. What kills me the most are the endless hours of exposition, with often multiple characters explaining a simple concept over and over again in the same cutscene, each time using different metaphors that do nothing but make the ideas harder to grasp. You could cut hours of cutscenes and radio conversations out of the game and nothing would be lost, which is objectively a sign of bad writing (or a lack of editing). The dialog often feels unnatural. When characters aren't busy explaining things, they're delivering melodramatic monologues that feel unearned and uninteresting. The ending is about 5 hours long, complete with showing the (unskippable) credits twice, with Kojima's name obviously appearing about 10 times throughout.

Graphically, the game looks amazing, and the soundtrack is also excellent, although I miss the option to play songs while I'm walking around the landscape, and the few times the game automatically plays a song for you it's almost always cut off too soon by enemies or a cutscene. The game also suffers from terrible UX, with the need to display a small little cutscene for every action you make in the menus resulting in a constant "Options->Skip Cutscene->Confirm" to do simple things as "selling" useless items.

Overall, it's a fun (and quite original) game to play, with a great soundtrack and visuals, but with a terrible story and tedious menu flows. I do hope Kojima keeps making games, I just hope someone stands up to him and helps him write a better story.

Without Konami's editing, one can feel and appreciate Hideo Kojima's creative forces behind the Metal Gear games. Hideo Kojima likes making games with smart, gritty, story-driven missions with militaristic undertones that have protagonists fully equipped with the latest tech to get the job done. All of this manifests in Death Stranding reasonably well, with some caviats. Fantasy job-simulator games have a somewhat niche market. The experience is there, but the amount of enjoyment one gets out of the game depends on how much they like the job description. Basically, in Death Stranding, you play as a package deliverer in a post-apocalyptic world. While the job is meaningful and vital for the survival of other settlements in the world, the dangers and beauty of the world don't always make up for the tedium that being a long-haul delivery man occasionally brings with it. The experience of this game is essentially the experience of an interesting job that would never exist in our world today, what with transport vehicle technology, decent infrastructure, and the lack of an appocolypse making the concept of this game protagonists' job that much more unnecessary in a developed country. The experience of virtual hiking, on the other hand, is spirit-lifting. Long treks across vast, Iceland-like landscapes make this worthwhile for those with the patience and contentment to appreciate it. Expand

I'm not interested in the Kojima fanboy hype, the marketing onslaught or the blanket detractors. At the end of the day, games need to stand on their own merit. Art direction is, not surprisingly, gorgeous, and the score is predictably immersive and emotive. While the story arc is intriguing, the writing itself seems stale in places and lost my interest over time. The cutscenes, well, it's Kojima so yes, there are more cutscenes than can be counted. I do appreciate the potential of cutscenes to further the story, but for me, they don't compliment the game as much as they compete with it. The rhythm of the gameplay simply doesn't match the rhythm of the scenes and I feel like they interrupt my experience more than enhance it. The core game mechanics seem to be the single biggest gripe to casual passerby, and though it does often feel like a glorified walking simulator, I do enjoy the slow pace and exploration factor. All in all, I think far too many of us are using the pre-launch hype as a measuring stick, but in and of itself, I found DS to be a fairly solid gaming experience. Not a strikeout or a homerun, but maybe a stand-up double. Expand

Physics can be wonky too, though I didn't encounter any game breaking bugs. Ultimately, you get as much as you're willing to receive from this experience. The cinematic cutscenes are where this game really shines. There are of course long sections of waking sim, though nicely accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack. And the core loop of making deliveries surprisingly doesn't tire after 30 hours. This is definitely another Kojima tale about the failings of American society, and the world at large. But the links to historical and mythical stories along with the outlandish new lore ultimately make it a compelling piece of fiction that stands on its own. I rarely if ever felt like the suspension of disbelief was broken, even with all the menus. Expand

The fails are in the way the story is presented and the gameplay, altough it has a very cool story with a lot of interesting concepts, it fails to develope it's world building in an interesting way to the player, you don't' do stuff, you are told by other characters....basically exposition after exposition, so much so, that even your character's past is told to you by someone else in the form of exposition!

The second thing is the gameplay, in the beginning everything is actually very interesting, you have to learn the most basic thing in a game, to walk! tha'st actually interesting, as the game progresses new mechanics are presented but, EVERYTHING never goes past the most surface - easiest level: walking, climbing, traversing the world, fighting, shooting, survivor mechanics, are all minimum, theres nothing complex, a lot of mechanics that have no real meanning, impact in the gameplay. One example: your boots can waste their durability, when that happens you will bleed, and you can die from losing too much blood, that's an interesting survivor mechanic, but guees what, YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE AN EXTRA PAIR OF BOOTS! There are many other exampels that goes the same way, a cool idea that is trivialized by the own game!!

The game it's interesting but at the same time is not enough to be great or fails in areas that it really shouldn't. I can only hope that Sony and other big studios don't give up on weird ideas and different games because of this one.

    - In large part because it subverts and avoids so many familiar, predictable tropes, DS is original and occasionally inspiring. The new trope of endless comical-dangerous delivery tasks will wear thin on many players after 4-10 hours.

    - Apparently DS was a big seller in japan. Apparently Japan gamers engaged with creating-carrying ridiculously tall stacks of boxes; then, fighting the natural environment to move forward with these over almost impossible terrains. Maybe in Japan, the comical nature of moving while balancing tall stacks of boxes was funnier than in the States.

    - I vote DS's digital face performances far and away the best in games this year and maybe ever so far in games. The camera lingers on faces and for me as a guy, the long takes with the four beautiful women's faces never got old. It's that good.

    - Need a new set of metaphysics? The game sells a complex new hologram of metaphysics. It's unlike mainstream or even valid esoteric metaphysics. It's also not New Age. There's lots of uneccessary swear words. It is still atheistic. The many new and unexplained terms alone can do you in. "All The Terms You Need To Know To Start Death Stranding" by NICK STRAUB on GameInformer.com will save you hours of head-scratching, if you intend to understand the game.

    - DS is a technical marvel. HOWEVER be warned, you will spend 50% OR MORE of your play time tweaking things on inventory and equipment screens. I kid you not.

OK so everyone who giving this game a 0 OR a 10 are lying and full of S***. One camp is the COD generation who just cant fathom anything but mindless action, and the other camp are kojima fanboys who are just detached from reality.

This game “while not for everyone” has some areas which we can objectively judge.

Pros: The story and world building are superb, with some well realised characters. There are some genuinely emotional moments in the story, together with some great surprises and twists along the way. The voice acting and motion capture are probably the best in any video game so far, and the direction is overall magnificent. The graphics also are worthy of praise, with some scenes, especially in that opening and some vistas nearing photorealism. Finally, the score and the soundtrack are beautiful and genuinely evoke a sense of wonder and really added to the daunting atmosphere the environment creates.

Cons: This game has one of the best opening sequences in recent memory, and then follows this up with 10 hours of slow and tedious fetch quests. The core gameplay loop is repetitive and completely unsatisfying, and slowly degrades into a test of the player’s patience. Even players who are looking for a calming experience while traversing the vibrant landscape will be disappointed as the cavalcade of elements that need to be micromanaged are overwhelming. Boot health, feet health, baby happiness, balance, package health etc. Certain obstacles are included purely for annoyance, and the required frequent backtracking makes this game extremely frustrating to play.

Why I gave this game a 7: From a gameplay perspective this game is a failure, however the story, world and characters were engrossing enough to keep me playing for the 50+ hours of the main campaign. Every time I turned off the PS4 out of frustration, I was back a few hours later, because I was so desperate to find out what happens in the story and figure out what is going on. I understand this won't be enough for everyone, but it was for me. However, that doesn't mean I had FUN with the gameplay, just that the story was enough for me to tolerate it.

Should YOU buy this game? The answer depends on how interesting you find the post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi setting and Kojima's narrative style. If it appeals to you, you will be able to overlook the awful gameplay loop. If it doesn’t then I wouldn’t recommend this game.

If you're not starved for something different and/or have a lot of free time (I clocked in at 53 hours), don't bother. But, having gone a couple of months and realising that almost all games have repetitive gameplay loops I decided to give it a go.

I have to say the more balanced reviews are correct, this is a very interesting game but it absolutely is not for everyone, it's very difficult to describe to be honest, the basic gameplay is indeed take this from a to b, and repeat but it's just so much more than that. The on the fly planning, route making, stealth, combat, asset management all make it so much more than just a postman simulator.

I've got to say it is a slow burner of a game, almost an open world puzzle if you like. I suspect if your interests are more in the twitch shooter or sport sim direction this game would be hell on earth, and that is in no way a dig at the guys that play those genre, it's a talent I don't have.

It's possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on the PS4, the controls are tight (the vehicles aside) and it's music is excellent.

I'd recommend picking it up, but if you ain't sure just wait it out and pick it up cheap in a years time. It's worth a look at least surely?

I really wanted to love this game, I really did but it’s a waste of money. The attempt at making something new and fresh has resulted in an awkward mashup of walking and managing deliveries. The movie ‘The Postman’ must have been in some way inspiration for this and like the movie it fails to deliver an engaging experience. I am sure there are people who enjoy this kind of thing but this certainly isn’t for me. I’ve given it a 7 for the effort of making a new type of game but I can’t give it more and I really wanted to give this a 10. The character or Norman Reedus is quite brilliant and so are the graphics but the world feels unfinished and combat and interaction mechanics feel like they were an afterthought. Expand

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
