Story and idea is unique and interesting more so that the world is facing a pandemic right now. However, the execution is boring and monotonous. Every mules act the same way like robots. Every terrain feel copied and paste. Every job order seems meaningless and unrewarding.

Edited- Increase from 5 to 7 due to the well-thought story telling.

Death Stranding is not an action game, and if that is what you're searching for, look elsewhere. It may have some action sprinkled throughout, but this is basically a hiking game, where the goal is to send packages through a hostile terrain. You'll unlock several tools that will make traversing this terrain easier, while at the same time you'll face harder and harder obstacles. Whether it's deep rivers, large mountains, terrorists, ghosts or epic boss fights, there's always something new to keep you on your toes, and it's very rewarding to get to the other side with a well-cared package. It's not a game for the masses, like the Metal Gears were, however.

That being said, although Hideo Kojima is a great game designer, a great writer he is not. And when it comes to the story, this is Kojima at his worst. I'm not speaking of the tongue-in-cheek moments Kojima is famous for, which I find amusing even though they do often mess with the story's tone. What kills me the most are the endless hours of exposition, with often multiple characters explaining a simple concept over and over again in the same cutscene, each time using different metaphors that do nothing but make the ideas harder to grasp. You could cut hours of cutscenes and radio conversations out of the game and nothing would be lost, which is objectively a sign of bad writing (or a lack of editing). The dialog often feels unnatural. When characters aren't busy explaining things, they're delivering melodramatic monologues that feel unearned and uninteresting. The ending is about 5 hours long, complete with showing the (unskippable) credits twice, with Kojima's name obviously appearing about 10 times throughout.

Graphically, the game looks amazing, and the soundtrack is also excellent, although I miss the option to play songs while I'm walking around the landscape, and the few times the game automatically plays a song for you it's almost always cut off too soon by enemies or a cutscene. The game also suffers from terrible UX, with the need to display a small little cutscene for every action you make in the menus resulting in a constant "Options->Skip Cutscene->Confirm" to do simple things as "selling" useless items.

Overall, it's a fun (and quite original) game to play, with a great soundtrack and visuals, but with a terrible story and tedious menu flows. I do hope Kojima keeps making games, I just hope someone stands up to him and helps him write a better story.

Without Konami's editing, one can feel and appreciate Hideo Kojima's creative forces behind the Metal Gear games. Hideo Kojima likes making games with smart, gritty, story-driven missions with militaristic undertones that have protagonists fully equipped with the latest tech to get the job done. All of this manifests in Death Stranding reasonably well, with some caviats. Fantasy job-simulator games have a somewhat niche market. The experience is there, but the amount of enjoyment one gets out of the game depends on how much they like the job description. Basically, in Death Stranding, you play as a package deliverer in a post-apocalyptic world. While the job is meaningful and vital for the survival of other settlements in the world, the dangers and beauty of the world don't always make up for the tedium that being a long-haul delivery man occasionally brings with it. The experience of this game is essentially the experience of an interesting job that would never exist in our world today, what with transport vehicle technology, decent infrastructure, and the lack of an appocolypse making the concept of this game protagonists' job that much more unnecessary in a developed country. The experience of virtual hiking, on the other hand, is spirit-lifting. Long treks across vast, Iceland-like landscapes make this worthwhile for those with the patience and contentment to appreciate it. Expand

I'm not interested in the Kojima fanboy hype, the marketing onslaught or the blanket detractors. At the end of the day, games need to stand on their own merit. Art direction is, not surprisingly, gorgeous, and the score is predictably immersive and emotive. While the story arc is intriguing, the writing itself seems stale in places and lost my interest over time. The cutscenes, well, it's Kojima so yes, there are more cutscenes than can be counted. I do appreciate the potential of cutscenes to further the story, but for me, they don't compliment the game as much as they compete with it. The rhythm of the gameplay simply doesn't match the rhythm of the scenes and I feel like they interrupt my experience more than enhance it. The core game mechanics seem to be the single biggest gripe to casual passerby, and though it does often feel like a glorified walking simulator, I do enjoy the slow pace and exploration factor. All in all, I think far too many of us are using the pre-launch hype as a measuring stick, but in and of itself, I found DS to be a fairly solid gaming experience. Not a strikeout or a homerun, but maybe a stand-up double. Expand

Physics can be wonky too, though I didn't encounter any game breaking bugs. Ultimately, you get as much as you're willing to receive from this experience. The cinematic cutscenes are where this game really shines. There are of course long sections of waking sim, though nicely accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack. And the core loop of making deliveries surprisingly doesn't tire after 30 hours. This is definitely another Kojima tale about the failings of American society, and the world at large. But the links to historical and mythical stories along with the outlandish new lore ultimately make it a compelling piece of fiction that stands on its own. I rarely if ever felt like the suspension of disbelief was broken, even with all the menus. Expand

The fails are in the way the story is presented and the gameplay, altough it has a very cool story with a lot of interesting concepts, it fails to develope it's world building in an interesting way to the player, you don't' do stuff, you are told by other characters....basically exposition after exposition, so much so, that even your character's past is told to you by someone else in the form of exposition!

The second thing is the gameplay, in the beginning everything is actually very interesting, you have to learn the most basic thing in a game, to walk! tha'st actually interesting, as the game progresses new mechanics are presented but, EVERYTHING never goes past the most surface - easiest level: walking, climbing, traversing the world, fighting, shooting, survivor mechanics, are all minimum, theres nothing complex, a lot of mechanics that have no real meanning, impact in the gameplay. One example: your boots can waste their durability, when that happens you will bleed, and you can die from losing too much blood, that's an interesting survivor mechanic, but guees what, YOU WILL ALWAYS HAVE AN EXTRA PAIR OF BOOTS! There are many other exampels that goes the same way, a cool idea that is trivialized by the own game!!

The game it's interesting but at the same time is not enough to be great or fails in areas that it really shouldn't. I can only hope that Sony and other big studios don't give up on weird ideas and different games because of this one.

    - In large part because it subverts and avoids so many familiar, predictable tropes, DS is original and occasionally inspiring. The new trope of endless comical-dangerous delivery tasks will wear thin on many players after 4-10 hours.

    - Apparently DS was a big seller in japan. Apparently Japan gamers engaged with creating-carrying ridiculously tall stacks of boxes; then, fighting the natural environment to move forward with these over almost impossible terrains. Maybe in Japan, the comical nature of moving while balancing tall stacks of boxes was funnier than in the States.

    - I vote DS's digital face performances far and away the best in games this year and maybe ever so far in games. The camera lingers on faces and for me as a guy, the long takes with the four beautiful women's faces never got old. It's that good.

    - Need a new set of metaphysics? The game sells a complex new hologram of metaphysics. It's unlike mainstream or even valid esoteric metaphysics. It's also not New Age. There's lots of uneccessary swear words. It is still atheistic. The many new and unexplained terms alone can do you in. "All The Terms You Need To Know To Start Death Stranding" by NICK STRAUB on GameInformer.com will save you hours of head-scratching, if you intend to understand the game.

    - DS is a technical marvel. HOWEVER be warned, you will spend 50% OR MORE of your play time tweaking things on inventory and equipment screens. I kid you not.

OK so everyone who giving this game a 0 OR a 10 are lying and full of S***. One camp is the COD generation who just cant fathom anything but mindless action, and the other camp are kojima fanboys who are just detached from reality.

This game “while not for everyone” has some areas which we can objectively judge.

Pros: The story and world building are superb, with some well realised characters. There are some genuinely emotional moments in the story, together with some great surprises and twists along the way. The voice acting and motion capture are probably the best in any video game so far, and the direction is overall magnificent. The graphics also are worthy of praise, with some scenes, especially in that opening and some vistas nearing photorealism. Finally, the score and the soundtrack are beautiful and genuinely evoke a sense of wonder and really added to the daunting atmosphere the environment creates.

Cons: This game has one of the best opening sequences in recent memory, and then follows this up with 10 hours of slow and tedious fetch quests. The core gameplay loop is repetitive and completely unsatisfying, and slowly degrades into a test of the player’s patience. Even players who are looking for a calming experience while traversing the vibrant landscape will be disappointed as the cavalcade of elements that need to be micromanaged are overwhelming. Boot health, feet health, baby happiness, balance, package health etc. Certain obstacles are included purely for annoyance, and the required frequent backtracking makes this game extremely frustrating to play.

Why I gave this game a 7: From a gameplay perspective this game is a failure, however the story, world and characters were engrossing enough to keep me playing for the 50+ hours of the main campaign. Every time I turned off the PS4 out of frustration, I was back a few hours later, because I was so desperate to find out what happens in the story and figure out what is going on. I understand this won't be enough for everyone, but it was for me. However, that doesn't mean I had FUN with the gameplay, just that the story was enough for me to tolerate it.

Should YOU buy this game? The answer depends on how interesting you find the post-apocalyptic Sci-Fi setting and Kojima's narrative style. If it appeals to you, you will be able to overlook the awful gameplay loop. If it doesn’t then I wouldn’t recommend this game.

If you're not starved for something different and/or have a lot of free time (I clocked in at 53 hours), don't bother. But, having gone a couple of months and realising that almost all games have repetitive gameplay loops I decided to give it a go.

I have to say the more balanced reviews are correct, this is a very interesting game but it absolutely is not for everyone, it's very difficult to describe to be honest, the basic gameplay is indeed take this from a to b, and repeat but it's just so much more than that. The on the fly planning, route making, stealth, combat, asset management all make it so much more than just a postman simulator.

I've got to say it is a slow burner of a game, almost an open world puzzle if you like. I suspect if your interests are more in the twitch shooter or sport sim direction this game would be hell on earth, and that is in no way a dig at the guys that play those genre, it's a talent I don't have.

It's possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever seen on the PS4, the controls are tight (the vehicles aside) and it's music is excellent.

I'd recommend picking it up, but if you ain't sure just wait it out and pick it up cheap in a years time. It's worth a look at least surely?

When I heard about the online part it sounded like garbage, but actually it works great! It feels like your working together to make the world better and in a weird way it doesn't make you feel alone even tho you play alone haha.

So I think most reviews are lying, feels like they haven't played a lot of the game, only couple of hours. Sure game is not perfect but sure is not ****/bad like most people say.

This game is more aimed for thinkers/planers and people that like to progress more slowly and in a relaxed way. This is not a game for those that like lots of fast paced games like most fps as example. Because I'm not that person.

So would I recommend this game to people? Yes but I would also explain you will need patience and why the reason behind it, because this is not a game for impatient people. We all know a person like that, when great story in a game is told.. Boom instant spam skip, to get to the action.

One of the main focus point of any Hideo Kojima games would be the story. From my personal experience without spoiling any of the game story plot I would say that the story could be intriguing at times but the pacing of the story could be very slow for the most part where you would felt like there was no progression in the story at all.

As for the gameplay if you're coming in with the expectation of it to being a heavy action pack game than you would most likely be disappointed. The gameplay in this game are usually fill with fetch quests where you would deliver a cargo from one location to another where it could get tedious after a while. As you progress in the story you would unlock more tools that could be craft to help you on your journey to deliver your cargo. There are some actions in the game as well where you would fight off the BT (the monsters in the game) in a boss fight sequence. Even though there are different types of BT in the games it get repetitive after a while as all their attack sequence are pretty much identical to each other.

As for the graphic in this game it is phenomenal, the one thing that stood out to me the most is how the weather changes in the game and how the world environment reacts to it. The soundtrack in the game is pretty good as well as they manage to get license to some really good music from certain music bands.

Overall the games have it moments but fall short in some departments such as inconsistent story pacing and really repetitive gameplay where they should have added many more elements into it to make the game more interesting.

The mechanics of the game are novel and at a certain point very original, however it can become repetitive and tedious. Its development is excessively long, it took me more than 80 hours to complete it and I had to leave aside secondary tasks for repetitive ones.

The best thing is perhaps its graphic aspect, a real beauty of game. It is also fair to mention in its strengths its innovative online game system. In which the reconstruction of the world is carried out by means of the collaboration of the players, each one contributing resources to equip the devastated world of the game, new roads and constructions that we can use in our long trips to deliver our orders.

The core gameplay is what makes this game enjoyable. And the multiplayer aspect (heavily borrowed from Dark Souls and exceptionally well expanded) really shines.

I'd still give this game an 8 despite the writing, however there's another negative aspect that needs to be addressed. It's the controls and the aiming. It might work perfectly fine for the delivery gameplay; but not for the bossfights. You strafe like you're ice skating and the aiming is too floaty, making targeting an enemy unnecessarily awkward.

There was this fight where you had to dodge the enemy's attack and you can tell that the controls was not designed for such occasion.

    - there is not much weapon variety (bola gun, grenades, your fists), you cant even use the electric spears of the enemies, which would have been a lot of fun.
    - attacking enemies while wearing your payload feels extremely clunky and unfun to perform
    - not much enemy variety either
    - you cant kill human enemies, because of them turning into void outs, so you only can stun them for a few seconds

    Traversing the environment:

    - walking around with a giant 120 kg, 3 meter high jenga tower on your back, while stumbling over rocks without falling, or climbing up ropes with the strength of your bare hands, while wearing the entire jenga tower on your back, looks just so immersion breaking. As if Kojima never heard of the terminology: center of mass. Couldn't they have restricted the backpack height just a little and gave him in exchange a few more drones which carry part of his payload and follow him around instead ? So that his movement while wearing the payload does not look as ridiculous?

    Story:

-The story is overall well done and it shows that Kojima does understand cinematography very well, but does his stories always have to be so esoteric and melodramatic ? I could have done easily without the paranormal ghost story in exchange for a alternate dimension colliding with our world sci fi approach. Let the deads rise up and void out, but at least try to give a halfway believable explanation for all of that, instead of resolving to pure esoteric giberish. After him explaining the reasoning of why the BBs (bridge babies) can see the BTs he totally lost me. That was the single most stupid thing i ever heard. Someone really needs to buy Kojima a few weeks of physic lecture on some university or college,so that he gets his facts straight and doesn't always have to resolve to pure esoteric nonsense in his story lines.

    Summary:

This game is a graphical milestone. The gameplay idea of having to constantly balance your payload on your back with the shoulder buttons, orelse risking a fall and potentially payload lost or damage is a very interesting and unique concept, but traversing the environment lacks a bit of variety and can get monotone very quickly and it certainly does not carry over 50+ hours. Adding a few additional gameplay elements and making the combat a little bit more challenging and engaging wouldn't have hurt the game either. If you love builder and hiking games then you are good, otherwise you maybe should stay away or test it at a friends house before buying.

3 years after the Kojima-Konami split up, the first game from Hideo Kojima’s new production studio has finally released. While I would classify the game as a third-person action/adventure game, the game’s director classifies it as a new genre called – “Strand”. With some people calling this game a glorified walking simulator and some saying it’s one of the greatest games of all time, where does this game truly lie?

The story starts off with you playing as a delivery man named Sam Porter Bridges, who is played by Norman Reedus. Sam must deliver cargo to sectioned-off regions of a post-apocalyptic United States due to the unknown threats of the supernatural event known as the Death Stranding. Sam is then tasked to connect all of America to a collective network to save everyone. Sam is given a BB unit to help him with this task, a baby in a jar that can detect BT’s, which is just this game's version of ghosts. Honestly, I could spend all day just talking about the beginning of the game and all the terminology but that where Death Stranding story gets a lot of its charm. The story is engaging from beginning to end thanks to creative storytelling and a wonderful cast of actors that bring this world and story to life. The ending is one of the emotional and heartfelt rollercoasters I have witnessed this generation. If you are coming to Death Stranding for its story, you will not be disappointed.

The gameplay is trickier to talk about. Is it a walking simulator? – Yes and No. The first few hours can be sluggish as all you will do is walk packages from one location to another. This may turn some off from the game, but later portions start to pick up the pace. After the 3rd episode in the game, you are able to craft useful structures, signs, weapons, and vehicles that can help you or other players advance in the story. These structures can be given likes so you can see how many people found what you built and how useful it was to them. This sense of community and how you help each other progress is a big part of the game. There are 3rd person shooting segments every now and again, but that's not the primary focus of the game. It’s a game that some people will like and others will not, but despite that, I had fun helping other people reach their goals and encouraging them to see Sam’s journey to the end. There are moments where you will be bored or frustrated, like the beginning of the game or trudging through the snow at slow speeds, but if you’re willing to put in the work and see past some of the games greater flaws, there is fun to be had.

The game is a technical marvel. One of the best looking games on the PS4 by a long shot. The little details help flesh out the world and bring the actors' performances to life. Glitches are few and far between. Players getting stuck to obstacles and other little things rarely happen. The soundtrack is a fantastic mix of original and licensed songs. The Decima engine has come a long way since its first title, Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Death Stranding is honestly a hard game to review so I hope most of my thoughts on the game are clear. I think it’s a fantastic experiment when it comes to doing something new with video games. It can be boring at points but one thing that is never lost throughout the experience is the amazing story and how it is worked into what going on in the gameplay. If you’re on the fence about this game, I would wait until it’s on sale before picking it up. It’s hard to fully recommend this game, so you’ll have to come to your own conclusion on if you will like what is offered in Death Stranding. Whether you end up liking Death Stranding or not, it’s still one hell of a rollercoaster with a lot of thought and care put in to it.

    Pros:
    +Fantastic Story
    +Great Soundtrack
    +Top Notch Acting
    +Gameplay Centered On Community

    Cons
    -Very Slow Start
    -Some Frustrating Slow Parts

He uses two realms to make a possibility for a character to appear in the same realm twice or something. And at the end he will reveal to you every metaphor and allegory he achieved by combining several languages and cultures and nonsense (so it would fit the story) like it is some big bren thinking. And there you are, speechless, clueless and amazed by Death Stranding's brilliance. Kojima-san = genius. 10/10.
    No, not really.
The story tries to take itself seriously while at the same time breaks the seriousness with wtf moments (licks), references (good ol' fashioned boss fight), cringe (princess Beach) and the "connect all America" silly propaganda. Though the characters are quite likeable, the cutscenes are often too long and boring.
But the real problem is that the gameplay has very little to do with the story. They are almost two separate things. I feel like they both work on their own and don't need each other.
The gameplay is plain. Get some crates from point A to point B. Have an inconsequential small talk with a recipient. The protagonist doesn't even answer them. Probably Kojima productions couldn't afford Norman Reedus to record those lines. Hammer x through these conversations.
The controls are pain in the ass. The on foot movement is let's say ok but vehicles, both close and gun combat, menuing - real bad. Not to mention the bad input layout. Even though traversing is stiff you can climb almost every steep and rock, no need to use ladders. The open world doesn't appeal to me. I find it dull. Perhaps more trees, less rocks?
The "paramultiplayer" is kind of interesting but meaningless for the game. On the other hand you won't find a game like Death Stranding so at least it's somewhat original, I guess. I would be very surprised if it would get a sequel or a spiritual successor though.
I'm glad Kojima didn't forget to write his name it like 20 times in the credits. Kojima, Kojima, Kojima.¨

    Rest in peace Silent Hills.

I mean, I'm the first one to admit that this game has its flaws, but ZERO out of ten? That's just nonsense and I think many people are just mad that this isn't MGS VI.

    Pros and cons:
+ Amazing, ambitious cinematic storytelling with an incredible scope
    - ...that can get kind of cheesy, overwrought and cringe-worthy ("Princess Beach") at times and blatantly bashes you over the head with its core theme again and again and again and again...

+ Some of the best motion- and face-capturing performances ever seen in a video game
-... and some that are straight out of uncanny valley

+ Innovative and unique approach to gameplay
-... that can be REALLY tedious, annoying and repetitious at times. Yeah yeah yeah, the tedium is part of the overall experience and message of the game, I get it, but nevertheless, I found myself asking myself at one point: Why tf am I doing this to myself? Why am I simulating the tedium and torture of wading through knee-high snow in a white-out where I can't even see where I'm going? Couldn't I be doing something more enjoyable with my spare time? Maybe Kojima intended this, maybe not. But the question remains: Don't we play video games, because, on a very basic level, it's enjoyable to do? Shouldn't a game just be fun to play, and not just a vehicle for a message and a story?

+ An over-arching theme of connection and bringing people together that gets expressed through both story and gameplay and the innovative concept of asymmetric multiplayer where you essentially play a single-player game, but feel the presence of other people going through the same experience and you can help each other out and make the journey a little easier for everybody.

    - Dogsh*t controls, especially for vehicles and climbing. Sometimes Sam just easily and automatically steps over small rocks with no extra input (like it should be), but sometimes he doesn't do it until you press X to climb. Like really? The game could not figure out what I wanted to do in that moment? Same thing when you approach a ladder, you have to press an extra button to climb it. WHY? Releasing a game with climbing mechanics this bad more than two years after BotW came out is just an act of ignorance. All in all, the control-scheme is unnecessarily convoluted and over-complicated. Even skipping cutscenes is made more annoying than it has to be, because they're cut up in little segments and you have to individually skip each one. WHY??? Just to keep the theme of tedium going?

    - Vehicles not only control terribly, but aren't even that useful most of the time, because you're just going to hit a rock every 2 metres unless you're driving on a road.

+ Lots and lots of unlockable items that allow for a more differentiated, sophisticated delivery experience as the game goes on

+ Absolutely insane graphics for PS4

+ A thick sense of atmosphere

    + Spectacular boss fights
-...that, unfortunately, like the rest of the game, never present any real challenge.

+ Beautiful environments in a big open world
-... that doesn't really look much like the USA at all. No wonder, when the crew did their location scouting in Iceland? Wtf?
-... and that doesn't really encourage exploration and basically only serves as an obstacle for your delivieries

All in all, although it can be incredibly tedious and annoying at times and it has a lot of padding and a lot of problems on a very basic mechanical level, I'm glad Death Stranding exists. It's certainly a fresh and unique gaming experience and its theme of connection and bringing people together seems very relevant in this day and age. Ironically, gamers couldn't be more divided in their opinions about the game. ;)

Is it the masterpiece that so many expected and rave about? Well, in some aspects, like cinematics, scope, uniqueness, and theming, yeah. In others, like controls and gameplay variety, definitely not. It's incredibly hard to find a rating here and I've never been so torn about how I really feel about a game, which is an achievement all in itself, I guess. DS is a game with a message, but I think that message could've still been brought across with sounder underlying gameplay mechanics.

Let's put it like this: If you like Kojima's brand of bat-sh*t insane story-telling, are open to a new and unique gaming experience in the form of a "social delivery simulator", like inventory and resource management, and are willing to go through quite a lot more tedium than is normally expected from a video game, give Death Stranding a try. If you were expecting MGS VI, only like action games, don't appreciate lengthy cinematic story-telling in a video game and/or are very impatient, this is DEFINITELY not for you.

This game is not a 10 and it isn't a 1 or 2 either. This game is basically a walking simulator you go from point A to B delivering cargo rinse and repeat. This game in my opinion is not game of the year material! Days gone or God of war should win that. This is like I said a movie soap opera based game. What I liked is the graphics and the soundtrack. The story is at times hard to follow you need to pay attention to the environment around you as it changes and your relations to others in the game. The ending of this game takes place over the last 3 episodes 11-14. This game contains 14 episodes with many twists soap opera worthy. I am all for cinematic and cut scenes in games but this one is overkill probably 10 hours or more of cut scences. The mechanics are weird. The boss fights are frustrating as hell and you can run away 70% of the time. Advice to anyone playing get to episode 3 as quick as possible. Use bikes and trucks often at episode 3. always carry a ladder or two with you a climbing anchor some hectic grenades. Help others build bridges and roads to make your life easier. Also when you get weapons the bolo gun and use non leatel assult rifle. There are consequences to killing in this game which I thought was a brilliant move. I also like the idea of a single player game in an online environment in a multiplayer world. Score: 7.5

    The Good:
    -Visual impact *10/10
    -Storyworld *10/10
    -Sound design *10/10
    -Memorable characters *9/10
    -Gameplay loop is therapeutic *7/10
    -Social strand genre/mechanics *9/10
    -Atmosphere *9/10

    The bad:
    -Narrative & delivery *5/10
    -Gameplay & mechanics *4/10
    -Controls, particularly vehicles *3/10.
    -UI & menues *4/10
    -Plot *5/10

Areas I want to elaborate on:
-Narrative & delivery: I remember several scenes where I'm told "this works this way" only later to be told or have something happen that contradicts the "rules". The contents of the story got me hooked effectively, but the delivery of the story points left something to be desired. Uninspired and boring.

-Social Strand genre/mechanics: Hideo Kojima claims to have invented a new genre. The idea of connecting with other players by the means of liking and sharing objects in the gameworld. This idea was novel and I really enjoyed it. It made me think about the potential and how I would use it going forward.

-Memorable characters: the way characters have been written and are presented to me is very Anime. The idea that a character is a manifestation of a quirk or a gimmick. It doesn't write authentic characters, but it writes memorable ones that feel unique and you get what they are about immediately. Also Margeret Qualley's character(s) are hot. Ahem.

    Quickfire points:
-The storyworld (world building etc.), AKA: the collective of lore, world and mythos, is gorgeous and inspiring.
-Atmosphere gets you in the ZONE.
-A lot of care and effort put into the sound design. The sound effects are the star of the show along with:
-The visuals. You are gonna be awestruck by what you see in this game.

My subjective score for this game is an 8 but my subjective score is a 7.5. Where Death Stranding doesn't succeed, in my humble opinion, is in the game design.

Some of the criticism going around is valid and Kojima as well as other creatives should pay attention to the negative feedback. It surely could have been great with more varied gameplay but one has to consider that this was a real project for a new studio to pull off in such a short amount of time. What it offers though is top notch and cannot be found elsewhere which is very valuable! Hopefully future projects could improve on this incredible foundation. Still a 10/10 overall especially considering how badly it is getting review bombed. Expand

its not a bad game but also not a good one gameplay wise. the cutscenes are great and the story stunning. i really loved the plot and it was kinda mindblown.
but the gameplay is just...lets say....kinda nothing.if this would be 10 missions like this i think most ppl could deal with it but its the whole game.

The graphics are great, can't wait to see the PC version, only thing I could wish for was a night and day cycle, but could he avoided it because of dark BTs, although that could pose an interesting challenge. The game is really about hoarding, getting civilization back to function and running errands which to be honest is what we do in most games. Yeah, it is repetetive and for many not very exciting, but I like it regardless. I think the cinematics are great and odd, I think the story can be interesting and very complex, maybe a bit too much. I think this is not a game for most people, it's a heavy game meaning you have to invest a lot of time, you have to enjoy playing alone and have a lot of patience building yourself up from basically nothing. I think the game is borderline genius and mad. The worst part is the ending. It is terrible and far, far too long. 7/10.

It's like nothing you have ever played before and while it takes quite a bit to get into, once you get used to the gameplay loop you will fall in love with it as long as you have patience. It does start falling apart towards the later parts of the story and it really feels pointless after the credits roll, but during the first 20-25 hours of Death Stranding there is a lot of enjoyment to be had while playing. Visually it is also absolutely amazing, although the world can start getting a bit boring after 30-ish hours.

While the story starts off very well and you become very immersed into the world's lore, it becomes quite stale after about 20 hours or so and Kojima ruins it all with his mandatory government conspiracy plot twist. It is pretty sad to see great actors trying to do the best with a truly horrendous script. There isn't a molecule of subtlety in any sentence of dialogue anywhere. It's all just a mess of terrible exposition and painfully preachy statements that repeat over and over and over.

The last 3 hours of the game feel like punishment for every moment of fun you had in the prior 25 or so hours. If Death Stranding had ended on a high note I probably would have been able to look past all of its weaknesses but instead it just keeps dragging on and on after which it finishes with a whimper. For that I can't give it more than a 7/10.

There's only so many times you can tolerate doing the same things over and over, watching the same cutscenes over and over, and getting the same generic rewards over and over before getting annoyed and bored.

How does it hold up to some of Kojima's other work? Well it's certainly no MGS or Snatcher.
The graphics are very impressive, possibly Yoji Shinkawa's best work, the aesthetics and designs are very creative, and likewise the world design is about as good as it gets for the current gen, pure eye candy. The sound design is also pretty good, I enjoyed more than a few of the licensed songs, and I can't complain about the sound effects and ambience. The voice acting is pretty exceptional aside from Norman Reedus being mostly absent and just listening to NPCs without any response most of the time, much like Kiefer Sutherland did as Big Boss/Venom Snake in MGS V.

The story is just weird, some parts of it are neat but more silly than anything, some of the cut scenes are exceptional , very nicely shot, and directed and that just might be the carrot on the stick to get you through the often drawn out, repetitive chapters but the story itself is just extremely tongue and cheek and I found myself rolling my eyes at the plot and world building Kojima is known for.

Gameplay is interesting, the locomotion itself is a challenge, it can be fun at times even with the frustration of taking one wrong step and falling flat on your face ruining your cargo early on, I still had a bit of fun traversing the world and having to get creative to make short cuts and working with/helping out the other invisible players to make the landscape more convenient to navigate.

I would have loved to see more importance in combat and I understand that Kojima is not a huge fan of killing and ultra violence, but the combat feels very dated for a game released in 2019, especially compared to how good and deep the combat and controls felt in 2015's MGS V.

I'd say its worth buying, just wait for a sale. I got my copy at 40 USD and still I overpaid a bit because of how the game just drags on and leaves much to be desired. Maybe 30 dollars would be a better price-tag. The Metal Gear saga has been my favorite franchise in gaming, really hate saying I am disappointed with Death Stranding but yeah.. It could have been better for sure.

Death Stranding is the most bizarre and difficult game to describe out there, I would even consider it as a game that cannot be fully explained. Not necessarily because of any political themes, but ratherDeath Stranding is the most bizarre and difficult game to describe out there, I would even consider it as a game that cannot be fully explained. I commend Kojima - the dude had a vision, went through with it and now has created one of the most discussed games of the year due to how controversial it has become, hats off for that. Not necessarily because of any political themes, but rather its gameplay loops surrounding it.

Let me just be clear on this - Death Stranding is a game that is not for everyone. I can see why a lot find the traversal movement towards your destination boring or frustrating. The environment is gorgeous at first but gets stale after a couple of hours, and the BT encounters are too frequent. Even if you were to be caught by BTs, a few grenades usually do the job for the miniboss. Is our FedEx job designed to be tedious? Maybe.

What annoys most about Death Stranding, however, is how little Kojima did with the gameplay loop. There are not enough varied gameplay elements to keep a player for long around, and some of these elements can even count as being intentionally tedious. Considering how long the game is, could you expect why someone would bother sticking around for 40 - 50 hours of a FedEx job with a crying baby tube in front of your chest?

...Exactly what happened. I can't exactly tell why I got so hooked and had fun with delivering cargo across an empty landscape, but I will try my best to explain why.

The overworld of Death Stranding is a bit built up like a micromanagement progression system. The bumps and little obstacles along the way require smart route planning. Previous routes travelled will be shown on your map. I like this little progression system, along with managing your cargo efficiently. It always gives a little reward for the player and encourages them to think 2 steps ahead. For example, loading your cargo correctly can greatly increase your stamina, as wind and other various weather hazards can hinder or even block your way through the landscape.

The biggest reason why I became so hooked to this game is thanks to its social system. If it weren't for that, I would not be playing it for so long. Along your journey, you can build structures to make your travel more efficient and easier. Things like postboxes, watchtowers, bridges, ropes, ladders, the list goes on. Other people have a chance to see your structures and use them to their advantage, as the same goes for you. Other structures in your world appear which you can make use of. Awarding "likes" to the player shows your appreciation for their effort to build or upgrade structures. I just absolutely love this concept, as it is a give and take scenario. I am being motivated to build structures, deliver other peoples lost cargo, and make an effort to give back what I have taken advantage of in the early hours of this game. I know that I am not only contributing to myself but actively for other people in their world as well. There are many ways to contribute towards your world and others too.

The encounters with BTs and other various gameplay aspects, such as vehicles, power skeletons or generally helping out keep the gameplay from getting stale, although they can also be tedious to deal with when you just wish to get from Point A to B.

Nevertheless, Death Stranding makes me feel like I am contributing to something important. Maybe not to a world many will play in, but definitely in a place where I feel like I am changing something. One step at a time.

Могла бы получиться игра уровня The Last of Us +-. Такие игры как The Last of Us или BioShock я лично прошел несколько раз, хотя они линейны, в них хочется вернуться.

I gave this game another chance after my 5/10 review. I put the difficulty down to very easy which has made the game a much more enjoyable experience since it basically negates all the durability systems and seems to make traversal easier. It is dumb that the music player is only available in the private room...seems like a huge oversight that you can't play the game's tracks while walking, but I guess that is what my phone is for. The real star of the game though the community involvement. There is something fun about leaving ladders and ropes behind knowing you're probably making someone else's life a little easier. Reminds of Dark Souls a little bit. I like that you can drop lost cargo at any delivery station and entrust it to another player if the intended destination is out of your way. I also enjoy delivering other people's cargo for them. The system of walking trails appearing on routes that are frequently walked is cool too. Basically this game is saved by the asynchronous multiplayer. If it didn't have this my review would probably still be at a 5. Overall after giving it a second chance and dropping the difficulty I am enjoying it a lot more because durability and traversal are basically non-issues now. Expand

This game is relaxing, scary, weird, and intriguing. Sometimes the dialogue is too on the nose, but you can find enjoyment in that fact if you're into that kind of stuff. I find playing this game can put you into a zen state if you let it, akin to Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon. Every piece of this game is very highly produced and the acting is top notch. Overall I kind of love this game.

Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding is both a great and a bad game at the same time. Innovating as it might be to the genre of video games, Kojima fails to deliver what could've been a masterpiece of a game as it has too many flaws: instances of unnecessary 4th wall breaking which takes away the immersion, huge expositions which does not appeal to everyone, and often substandard "emotional" scenes which spells out the struggle of characters rather than showing it. However, the cinematography, the music, the acting, interesting scientific theories and philosophies, and lastly a well-crafted social system in the game prevents me from rating this game any lower than 7.

Regardless, the game overall for me was worth the price, and I am interested to see what Kojima will bring to the table in his next "strand" game.

What can I say about death stranding .
The game almost Got it .
Every single thing about the game is perfect but when you mix them together they don’t work in harmony , I feel like there’s something missing it needs something more .
But in the end love it or hate it I do believe the Game is a experience that you should try to play it .

The game play is very slow VERY slow basically its get from A to B without letting go of your controller otherwise sam (the protagonist) is gonna fall over and also sneaking around the BT's. the best part of this game is making sam fall over... ok maybe not so much but thats still fun the actual best part is the the amazing views accompanied by the music me and my dad were waiting for some of that amazing music by low roar and some others I cant remember the problem with the music is that it just doesent play enough in my opinion your walking this long vast open spaces barren of any life except for the MULE's (the bandits of the game) and the BT's which is the last thing you want to see all this without any music there will be some fairly rare moments where you DO get music and when you do it looks and sounds amazing the music perfectly accompanies the amazing views you get but again these moments don't happen enough sure you can listen to them in your private room and at lvl 2 structures but the ones from the private room are ONLY in the private room and the lvl 2 structures only have so much range

in short the game is unique and is not a game for everyone but when you do pick it up its hard to put it down the game has its flaws but those flaws outweigh the positives or the other way around for other people
my opinion on the game is fairly balanced and thats why I would recommend this game to a select few. the people who are able to sink hours into a game and not get sick of it and those who dont need action to find a game fun (in a way)

This is not a 10 in 10 game. But it's not bad, not at all.

The graphics are probably the best you can find in a Playstation right now.
The playability is quite good, I must say, but some times, especially when you get into rough terrain, it can be a little frustrating.

Games are suppose to be experiences that get you out of your world and get you somewhere, making you lose perception of time. And this game is a new experience, and it will get you to lose track of time.
But not all ways. Sometimes it comes to a point that you just walked for so long, doing the same things, over and over, that it gets boring. So boring that in fact, you'll pop out the cd and will continue to play that game that you never finished because you didn't have the patience to..

Once again, it is a good game, but it's not for everyone. Because, when it's not boring, it's brilliant.
But oh god, it can be very, very boring.

    The bad parts:
    * Long, pointless dialogues ("I am Fragile but not that fragile", I mean WTF Kojima-San? Oh, and original and "unique" characters names like Deadman, Heartman, Hardman, Die-Hardman, was hoping to see a guy name Fartman but was disappointed). Notice, these are not superhero names. Some may say this is art and I won't judge cause some dudes once left by accident a fire extinguisher in the middle of an art gallery and they were praising it as art).

    * Driving around the United Cities of America (cause the USA in the game are No More) is horrible. The vehicles just lack of physics and of proper control.

    * The combat system is poor, tiring and repetitive. Three punches is what it takes to take out your enemy. Although there are points for going in stealth, it's a total waste of time. You want to play something Stealth? Better play Hitman.

    * There is a good variety of weapons but i never used them apart in boss fights cause it's easier to run over your enemies with the truck and get **** done.

    The good parts:
    * The network features and their interactions are GREAT and innovative. Other people can help you out throughout your journey. Either by setting up ladders, or by laying down roads and leaving equipment or parts for you to help you out. You can do the same and there you contribute in general, which is awesome.

    * Stunning graphics.

    * I found the game sometimes relaxing. Cause when I was out for deliveries I was just entertained with the parts that I had to surpass obstacles, climb mountains, set up ladders and using my climbing equipment.

    * What also kept me going were the upgrades from time to time, which indeed help you on your quest. Otherwise I would have quit playing in the first 20 hours.

At first it made me very angry, the gameplay is repetitive and redundant, particularly in the early hours where you don't even have a transport vehicle and you have to walk for hours in nothing. I would call it a boring game, the plot and the rest are the backbone, but if it were just for gameplay it would be a really boring and bad game. It's not the kind I like and it's not what I expect from the one who created the metal gear saga. Original idea but not enough. Expand

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
