One of the most vivid games in my memory is the first Call of Duty, the campaign that made me simply happy to play and replay it over and over. This time around the campaign is amazing. I love it. Characters are great, the story is compelling and both audio and visuals are of the best quality I have ever seen in CoD. I can see myself playing it again and again alongside the first games. Props on this one. And man, I wish I could buy a singleplayer only for a third of a price because the rest of this game...

Zombies have zombies. Enough said. I vomit with zombies. Movies, TV, games, zombies are everywhere. They are boring. They were boring years ago. Just stop making zombie games and movies already! They've been done to death... Pun intended.

Multiplayer is weird. You have that new hub section where a bunch of people run around, open boxes with random **** and do nothing but look for a menu to see the multiplayer modes. It's confusing at first but it is a good idea... but seeing loot boxes being open, seeing other people getting some random junk made me realize that the point of this hub is to gloat about your loot. Nothing social or interesting takes place here, just consumerism at its finest! The gameplay itself is like CoD of old. No recoil, no strategy, no thinking. Maps are built with sniper nests and choke points from grounds up, so... every game looks exactly the same. It gets boring after a while and because of how weapons handle you feel like the game was programmed as your first shooter - when you're done go play something better (most games are better).

To sum this up. Singleplayer campaign is an easy 9/10, multiplayer is for me 3/10 (7/10 for CoD players) and zombies is about -1000/10. It's a shame you can't buy just the singleplayer, I'd pay for that.

This game is SO poor: graphics are nowhere as it should be on today's consoles, animations are the same as 10 years ago, explosives are poorly done and the indestructible and hidden borders of the environment is something retarded.

That's because of the old engine from the beginning of the franchise. They just 'modified' it but the basics remain the same. The download package is 70GB (!!!!), all of which is bloatware. We're not talking about ultra HD graphics are heavy renedering for next gen consoles.

The gameplay in multiplayer is very arcade, very fast and it's like I'm playing against and with bots. They all move so jerky. Shooting mechanics are poorly done, it doesn't feel right, it's all too fast. After a MP round, it takes ages and ages before a new game starts and you have to stare five minutes at the scoreboard without any possiblity to go to another screen.

What's great? The unlockables, the perks and kill cams are still great and something to play for. But the gaming experience is so so so poor and it's painful to see how the gaming press keep giving it high scores. Perhaps it's because of the Campaign Mode, which I'm not interested in.

But the whole game experience and above all, the game mechanics are retarded and outdated. This is a game for PS3, not for current gen consoles. Once again, you should be ashamed Activision to support publishing a cheap rip off of this franchise. IW or Sledgehammer MUST create a new engine for this game.

This is like like playing FIFA 07 on a PS4 in 2017.

Single player seems fine, even if it is more of the same. I play COD for the multiplayer but this is a step backward (and I don't mean because its BOTG). So far for me it is purely twitch gameplay which means you can't play smart. For most of the COD multiplayers I'm a 2.0 KD player. I like to outsmart people, not just out reflex them. Sniping is a joke, no point when a AR can pick you off across map. Shotguns are way to powerful (probably will be nerfed). Overall the movement and aiming feel floaty, like AW. I'll keep playing for now but I'll probably be going back to MW remastered soon. Please Please make a Modern Warfare 2 remaster!

    FWIW my top COD multiplayers:

This game is horrible. Literally the only redeeming quality is parts of the campaign but even then it is one of the shortest campaigns in CoD history and still does nothing compared to CoD4/MW2/WaW/BO1/BO2.

The MP... good lord is it horrible... guns lack any authenticity and are completely reskins (Tommy gun is literally the ASM-1 of AW). Returning the moment I leave work.

Maybe COD should take a cue from Ubisoft and take a year or two break from COD and really take the time to craft a sick shooter, with an actually good campaign, and awesome multiplayer. There hasn't been a decent COD game since Black Ops One, and even then, that's where the series started to change for the worst. Even the remake of Modern Warfare has left little to be desired. Twitch shooters are not fun, just mindless running around. I really wanted to give this game a chance, as they promised going back to the roots. Well, they went back to the roots of Call of Duty on the surface only, that being a themed game in World War Two. That's the only thing. It is still a stupid, mindless twitch shooter. My first hour in, I was four matches into playing just regular Team Death Match and my soldier score was 16/45 with a KDR of .36. I don't seem to have that trouble on games like Battlefront or Battlefield. I do like the layout of the maps, lots of choke points, but the fact remains that this is a twitch shooter. The gameplay gets very tiresome very quickly. The last Call of Duty game I "bought' brand new was with my Xbox One and that was Ghosts. Ghosts was a better attempt to fix the last couple of releases prior to it, but still fell short. I vowed never to buy a COD game again. Yet the promises and hope that Activision finally drilled into the developers heads that the players wanted a solid COD game again, has fallen very short. It's the same rinse and repeat re-skinned twitch shooter. So now that I have wasted my money, I can say that I am officially DONE with this franchise. I will never purchase another COD game new. I didn't even buy the remastered Modern Warfare new because I had a feeling it was going to be trash, I bought it cheap on ebay and I recommend anyone wanting to give this game a chance to wait a while and do the same, get the game cheap on ebay as a re-sell and the company doesn't get the profit. OH, and if you thought the microtransactions of the last game were bad...wait until you see COD WW2's. Micro transactions everywhere. This is a trash game, save your money and continue to have faith in DICE and the Battlefield series...they for the most part listen to their customers and deliver a mostly solid game. Expand

The campaign is mediocre, the multiplayer is copy and paste from every year. It just isn't worth it. Cod is a dying franchise.

The multiplayer seems to be different for those who are used to jetpacks yatta yatta. We are heading back to WW2 and it feels nice for a change. I topped the leadboard on my first match with flame shotgun bullets. It was satisfying for sure. Although there is something that I do not like about this game, and it is the fact that they tried so hard to make this a game that would be played for hours on end, with amazing detail and what not. Unfortunately this game is not amazing and lacks a lot of graphical improvements and the optimization is just crap. I played on a 144hz monitor 2460 or 2K screen, with a 1080 graphics card and it didn't look all that great. The multiplayer is ok at best, but moving over to zombies, is just downright cringe worthy. The zombies look amazing art wise and their voices uncomfortable feeling which is great, but it just isn't as scary as we had hoped for the series. It has jump scares, but that is it. This Call of Duty, is by far an improvement for sure in some areas, but overall just isn't a game that I am interested diving more into. It was unfortunate because this was one of my anticipated game of this year, and it did not deliver to the hopes I thought it would bring. Expand

Time after time I'd fire a shotgun point-blank into an enemy's chest only to have it not register at all and be killed. Most gunfights are based on some perverse sense of luck rather than any skill. The weapon damage has no basis in reality. HQ is a waste of time, and the micro-transactions are simply another insult to an already poor game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Firstly, the campaign doesn't even touch on the idea of Russians, Japanese and/or the German point of view. Same old "americans were the only one with souls and feelings, germans were robots" clichè. They included a black person with another "you underestimated the blacks" clichè and totally dumped historical correctness for the sake of political. Same goes for the women characters which had no purpose to be women and could have easily be replaced by more appropriately for the historical time men.
The game conveys no feeling, similar to how WAW conveyed feeling of horror just by the looks of the menu, the soundtrack and so on. I can associate any COD with some feeling, but I can't associate WWII to anything. In addition, I didn't notice any impressive soundtrack.

Let's touch on the Mutiplayer. The moment I open the menu I see how terrible the UI is. In fact, I wonder if it could be worse than that. It's confusing, cluttered with stuff, backgrounds change, blur and have no relation to one another when you navigate. Navigation is horrible. It feels more challenging to open weapon customization than reach lvl 20 in zombies. I can't see scoreboard during a multiplayer match. I have to go through a few tabs, then one option down, then a popup for confirmation in order to leave the match. I can go on for hours about what's wrong with the UI.
Maps are mostly terrible. 3-lane, boring, no diversity, nothing fun or special about them. Such a rushed design. I will leave it here regarding multiplayer.

Zombies are lacking the horrific Treyarch feeling. There is unnecessary customization. Playing zombies is extremely easy. No soundtrack, no cool sound effects when you pick up a drop, it just doesn't make me want to replay it.

Overall, the game is horrible, rent it, play the campaign and get rid of it.

This back-to-basics approach is comfortable as an old shoe, but the new additions are hit-or-miss and the lack of risks taken won't do anything to win back those who found the series to have gotten stale some time ago.

    The campaign:
Sledgehammer Games shows once again that they're almost as good at telling stories as the team at Treyarch. With the exception of the protagonist (whose voice actor has some trouble maintaining his southern accent), I actually cared about the characters. I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay changes though. The removal of recharging health for a limited bar that you need to keep an eye on is at odds with the chaotic nature of the action where bullets come at you from every direction. The new squad system where your AI teammates can resupply you with ammo and first aid kits is interesting, but not fleshed out enough to have any real impact. While I was invested in the story actually playing through it wasn't something I enjoyed all that much.

    Zombies:
I think WWII actually has one of the best iterations of the fan favorite cooperative mode. The new tone and setting are really creepy giving it a distinct vibe. All of the abilities, power-ups, and single use skills will be easier for newcomers to wrap their heads around than they were in Black Ops 3. While this change may not sit well with some, I love the addition of regularly updated goals for the sense of direction they give. Of course playing with randoms isn't ideal. Especially if you or they don't have a mic. This is still a mode that is at its strongest with friends.

    Multiplayer:
The biggest portion of the package and the thing that's kept this franchise alive. It's where you'll feel the effects of the return to boots-on-the-ground style gameplay the most. With the removal of all the movement systems introduced over the years as the series pushed further and further into the future this really does feel like playing old school CoD. The new War mode can be quite a bit of fun with each map offering different objectives for teams to complete in order to win the match. It adds some nice variety, but can be a little unbalanced at times with certain objectives giving one side a clear advantage over the other. The Hub is kind of an odd addition. Giving you a place to interact with other players. It has its amusements, but for the most part I never used it.

The loot box system is understandably controversial as it has led to the inclusion of microtransactions. They are totally frivolous though as all they offer are cosmetic options. They're given out at random and you can earn them by completing "contracts" that require you to complete certain challenges. You can even get specific things you want with the easy to amass in-game currency by going to the Hub. So you'll never feel pressured to spend any money on them. Personally, I kind of like them as they mean I don't have to hit some crazy goal just to get a stupid charm or skin for my guns.

Newcomers and longtime fans alike are going to face a bit of a learning curve when it comes to navigating WWII's confusing mess of menus. I don't know why Sledgehammer decided to ditch the sleak, easy to figure out layout of previous CoD titles, but it wasn't a smart move. Its the kind of thing that helped put Medal of Honor: Warfighter in a very early grave and has kept me from ever sticking with a Battlefield game for too long. I also encountered a startling amount of disconnects from matches. The stability is quite questionable given the meaty update sizes.

    Technical:
Patch sizes are something Sledgehammer really needs to work on. I've been able to get every update put out for all of both Treyarch's and Infinity Ward's entries in the series over the years without ever having to worry about whether or not I had enough space for them. Here though I had to clear out a nice chunk of memory to make room. This was in issue for Advanced Warfare as well and I abandoned that game because of it.

    Conclusion:
If you've wanted to see the series return to a more grounded style of play that's free of laser beams and robots then this is the CoD for you. Sledgehammer has tried to add some defining changes to the mix with varying degrees of success. Overall though this is another solid addition to the franchise and a sign that perhaps we haven't seen everything this conflict has to offer.

Fantastic looking and sounding. As far as gameplay goes, your guns apparently shoot confetti and not bullets. I sniped the AI during the campaign, in the neck, twice, and they simply shrugged it off. Takes nearly 12-14 bullets from a Thompson to down an enemy, and this is on recruit difficulty. Heroic actions are beyond buggy. Last one I attempted, I was unable to move in any direction andFantastic looking and sounding. I really wanted CoD’s return to World War II to be something more than a solid game – but it’s not. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’ve already seen all this, that the developers (or perhaps the publisher) chose to create something as safe as possible. There’s just one campaign mission that surprised me with its scale, the rest is just a disappointing “best of Call of Duty”. The multiplayer is as good as usual, but it was infused with unnecessary systems resembling mobile titles, e.g spending in-game currency on pointless tasks of the “kill 100 enemies” variety. Missions that make you watch other players open their loot boxes are the pinnacle of absurdity. [13/2017, p.64]

A solid return to its roots, Call of Duty WWII reminds us what made us all fall in love Call of Duty in the first place. It ticks all the boxes which is both a blessing and a curse. Good fun and worth your time but offers nothing exceptional.

Revitalised and exemplary FPS gaming. Multiplayer trims back to the essentials, campaign shows sensitivity and Zombies...well it's a new excuse to play CoD Zombies. [Christmas 2017, p.77]
