Finally the cod developers listen to the fans and remastered one of the best call of duty's of all time, its mostly just a graphics upgrade but it runs smoothly and i cannot wait to multiplayer comes out to get the nostalgic feeling of boots on the ground cod but the campaign is an absolute masterpiece i recommend it to anyone and old cod fans will love it.

I was ready to give this game a 10, but recent developments prevented me from doing so.

The first sign was how this game was tied to Infinite Warfare. But around Christmas last year, my brother found the Legacy Edition for $60. Not a bad deal. I mean, you get two full games for $60.

First, the good, and that's the campaign. They made the best campaign of the series even better. It's like you can really improve on perfection. It's like a time machine back to 2007. Beating this on Veteran made it even better. But that's really where the good ends.

Multiplayer is where it's all messed up. Think you'll relive the same nostalgia but in next-gen? Think again. Activision thought it was a good idea to bring the stuff in current CODs like lag and bad hit detection back here. And you what else they brought here too? Supply drops! First, they said it's just cosmetic. Then, they introduced guns that weren't in the original game...as supply drop exclusives. That's right, MWR has become pay-to-win.

The final straw? RESELLING the Variety Map pack. For $15 (the original was $10). After that, I quit. Do you know of any REMASTERED game that does this? The Last of Us doesn't. Batman: Return to Arkham doesn't. "But you get some supply drops! That's why it cost more!" you whine. Yeah, supply drops that WAS NOT IN THE ORIGINAL. Sigh, the extent COD fanboys defend this.

Want to play COD 4 so bad? Either: buy a used PS3 and COD4 (which costs the same as getting the full experience on MWR), or just get the PC version. Don't buy MWR, even if it goes standalone. If you do, just play the campaign, the only good thing that's there.

I love the fact that I can here if someone is using an AK47 or an M16...just like in world at war you can tell what people are using just by the sound. In a word: wow. Of all the games that have been updated for the current generation, I'm just so thankful to Raven Software for remastering Modern Warfare (one of my favourite ever games) to such a remarkable degree, and which certainly sets the standard that all remasters should live up to.

Where most remasters merely give the original game a HD reskin with minimal improvements made, Modern Warfare Remastered is one of those few exceptions that go beyond expectations. And whilst I could say the graphics don’t quite meet the standards of a game from 2016, it’s worth noting that no decent remaster has ever used high-end visuals that are stunning for its time of release and so in this regard the game can be forgiven.

However, despite the name, calling it a mere remaster seems to do the game a disservice, as the amount of visual changes that have been made (everything from the realistic explosions, right down to the bullet shell casings of each weapon that reflect real-life) are more akin to that of a full-on remake. But don't let the word "remake" put you off, for everything you know and love about the feel of the original is all still here. Not to mention that even with these numerous alterations to the original, 99% have all been changed for the better. If ever you see a comment from someone saying nothing has changed in this remaster aside from only the graphics, they clearly haven't played the original much at all.

Really, (aside from the story) the only thing I can think of that hasn't been changed at all (as it is classed as a remaster naturally) is the core gameplay. Despite originating from 2007, it still manages to hold up today well enough and in a sense is only improved due to the general feel of the remaster. Those looking to get back to the feel of old-school COD without fear of boost-jumping and wall-running will definitely not be disappointed.

With the multiplayer side of things, whilst any small issues do remain, such as spawning problems and the return of infamous perks etc., I believe this side of the game still holds up in terms of gameplay, simplicity and pure nostalgia. Long-time fans will unsurprisingly be annoyed at the introduction of supply drops and perhaps also with all the new content released, but releasing this is understandable as a multiplayer from 2007 is far too barebones for today's standards.

There’s really not much else to say about the remaster. The graphics. The lighting. The effects. The sound. The animations. All of these are the core elements that have been improved to such a fantastic degree from the original, Raven should be applauded for such a stellar job. If you're a fan of COD, then picking up this game (along with Infinite Warfare, a nice bonus) is a no-brainer. However, if you've never played the original Modern Warfare and aren't really committed to the new installments, it's probably worth waiting until a time when the game is released separately (if it eventually happens).

All in all, Modern Warfare Remastered is definitely one of the best remasters I have seen for a video game and a great chance for newcomers to experience Modern Warfare in all its next-gen brilliance. Kudos Raven!

Score: 8.5 (if I could on Metacritic).

(UPDATE AFTER ORIGINAL REVIEW) I think it's worth pointing out that it's best to ignore all the trolls who rate the game from 0-5 on here. Seeing as most of them unfairly base such a low score on all the negative aspects of the multiplayer because apparently this is the aspect that matters most of all in their opinion, their scores really aren't reliable. It's 50% campaign, 50% multiplayer, so each should be treated as such when grading the game overall.

I can agree that microtransactions and some new weapons are unwanted yes, but they can't complain that everything's horrible and game-breaking (having been unchanged from the original) when these were the ones crying that nothing should be changed! Not to mention a lot of the complaints are completely exaggerated, like "dying within 2 seconds 80% of the time" and other such BS like "I blame Raven for microtransactions and the cost of the DLC" (when it was Activision's fault). Take these reviews with a large pinch of salt because only some of what is written is actually credible and any of these low scores simply do not reflect the overall quality of this brilliant remaster.

If you've played MW1 originally, then you will love this blast from the past with a fresh coat of paint. It's a great testament of how far we've come, graphically, for the COD series.

That being said, this is LITERALLY the same experience as the original's with updated graphics and gun physics. The Trophies/achievements are the exact same, the levels have the same dialogue, and it progressed identically. But that isn't a bad thing at all.

It proves that the best iteration of the series is still timeless and thanks to this remaster, we can relive the glory days with our current-gen systems.

PROS: Same great story. Graphics really make the game feel more alive than the original. Gun feedback seems more realistic than the original. They kept the same feel and sounds that triggers that nostalgia bone just right.

CONS: No new additions or twists, just more polished than the original. There were some mild bugs while aiming (scope disappearing or red dot not appearing) but they were brief and didn't hinder the experience much. Some odd shadows every now and then too which appear very pixelated. Hoping these get patched by the full release.

SUMMARY: If you loved COD4, then you won't be disappointed. Honestly, I would highly recommend it as a nice trip down memory lane for any gamers as one of the first truly cinematic military FPS games around.

This is my review over Modern Warfare Remastered. This game may not be my favorite but it definitely isn’t the worst game I’ve ever played in my lifetime. It definitely has some flaws and some things that it made a lot better than the last game. I will be telling you about the things that I thought the developers did better and some things I think they could’ve done better on or added into the game.

Some of the things that I think they did good on were keeping in the glitch spots. You may have no idea what a glitch spot is, well a glitch spot is a place that you shouldn’t be able to go to in the original game. They have many glitch spots on many different maps, which I think is a cool feature that they have kept into the game. They kept in the feature of only 3 score streaks which I think is a lot better because you don’t have to wonder what killed you or how do they know exactly where you are. Another thing that they have kept into the game is the original guns and weapons that they had in the first game.

They have still kept in the supply drop factor which I think ruins the entire game in the sense that you can either buy crypto keys or you can grind in the game to get the keys which you can later, use for getting different items. Another thing that I think is a really bad feature is the red name display and how you can’t turn it off. It makes it really unfair to play hide and seek. The other things is that there are limited attachments for the guns and it makes the game really limited.

Also I personally thought MW2 was the superior game and would have preferred they had remastered that instead.

The other issue I find is that I'd forgotten over the years the major frustrations with COD 4, such as sniping. In MW2 you really could rush yet in COD 4 each game is slowed down by the constant snipers one shotting you from across the map, so games feel quite and slow. Also my favorite mode in COD history was Demolition which didn't come out until MW2. Cod 4 also lacks any fun kill-streaks, you have 3 streaks and that's it. At the time this was genius but doesn't cut it anymore. I also feel their is lag there which didn't affect the original as badly.

I also find the maps a little off in COD 4. There are some great ones like Crash and Vacant but maps like shipment are an awful mess and Bog is dull and badly designed.

So if you really want to play COD 4 get it in a steam sale, if you've already played, like Goldeneye it's best left as a ,memory rather than spoiling the nostalgia you had.

A remastered version of a classic, Modern Warfare Remastered shows it's age. Knowing this, Activision used this game as a cash grab, with overpriced micro-transactions and content locked behind a paywall.

They just don’t have multiplier online they also have campaign with real life missions. The campaign is perfect with missions that are very detailed and complex with makes it different to other games. On the multiplayer you can play different types of game modes such as team deathmatch, domination, search and destroy. This gives the players a chance to choose which game mode they prefer, there’s over 10 to choose from. Also they have added cage match which is new, this is when you can play 1v1 with someone online. This game mode is great when you’re feeling to take someone on so see who’s better. They are also realising new maps to add to their old ones which I definitely think would be good. Overall I think they have improved the game a lot which was there top priority. The experience of the game play has change which is brilliant, I think its one of the best call of duty games they have realised in a while. Expand

The third is with the server reaction/connection speeds in that I have checked my connection speed and have an incredibly fast upload/download connection but yet when I have the clear drop on an enemy ,having shot them 4/5 times they only have to shoot me once and I'm dead and then the replay shows the opposite!! The next problem is with you being given a loss stat when you want to avoid certain levels but get allocated a level (Bog,Countdown and Shipment spring to mind) and then cannot get out of without adding a loss. A nice touch would have been to separate certain level... to which I mean Bog,Countdown and Overgrown are clearly Sniper levels and no fun to a general soldier/player .Then we have Shipment which is just an exercise in frustration in that you spawn...you get shot...you spawn again you get blown up by a grenade....you spawn once more to get caught in the middle of an airstrike......Grrrrr!! All this serves to muck up (you can replace muck with your own choice of word) your K/d ratio and win/loss ratio. Come on Activision this is the 21st century and this should have been Game of the Year, instead it's a pile of dross. Over rated and over priced and I for one shall be turning my attention to Battlefield in hope of something more worthy of my hard earned cash.Hang your heads! Expand

Before I can get into the game itself though, I have to praise Raven Software's work on the graphics. They really rolled back the years on this now 12 year old title. It looks like not even a single day has passed since it was first released back in 2007, allowing players to revisit CoD 4 with the same visual fidelity they cling to in their memories. Even the more recently released Black Ops 4 doesn't look this good.

Back in the day I made the mistake of saying the game doesn't have any good setpieces. A simply incorrect statement. The campaign is held in high regard as one of the best in the entire franchise and for good reason. Each level is memorable in its own way, often providing multiple thrilling encounters. The grounded, realistic approach this takes over the more adrenaline fueled madness of the later CoD titles makes it standout from its brethren in a way that almost defies time. Level design and A.I. are definitely showing their age, but the route the series has taken since this originally came out has allowed CoD 4's single-player offering to feel just as fresh as ever, albeit for very different reasons.

Multiplayer on the other hand hasn't aged as well as I thought it would. It's pretty tough going back to a stiffer, more restrictive form of movement and aiming after years of the more responsive, twitch-based fluidity that has defined CoD since then. It's still very much worth playing though and not just for the nostalgia. The boots on the ground action is appealing in the same way as it was in 2017's WWII. Although the inclusion of that game's microtransactions and loot box mechanics are an unfortunate new addition.

Modern Warfare Remastered is a great way to revisit an iconic title that paved the way for one of the biggest franchises in gaming. A lot of work was done to ensure CoD 4 doesn't feel as old as it could have. Although there's plenty about this game that was simply timeless to begin with. Not even Activision's attempts to exploit people's love for the game with money grubbing tactics can keep this decorated veteran from earning top marks on the battlefield once again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Returning to a game that, at the time of me writing this, is over 10 years old can either be a uplifting nostalgic trip or a disappointing eye opener. luckily I feel strongly in the prior camp when i comes to this remaster of Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare. A game that still holds up remarkably well after a decade since its initial release. Seeing familiar levels and settings like the rain drenched cargo ship or the gun riddled television broadcast center brought back memories of me completing these missions numerous times back on my old 360. However, the memories that I will be taking away from this remaster isn't the level design or combat, but the solid job the team did with updating the graphical design of each level.

There were numerous scenes that I thought to myself how much a new paint job can help improve the enjoyment of certain set pieces. The opening "crew expendable" mission really showcases how a remaster can enhance a scene. Even subtle changes that noticed like when you're fighting as the american side and the nuclear explosion happens whilst you're in the helicopter. In the original you stay sat in your seat and watch the guy fly out of the chopper, in the remaster you both get pushed to the floor and you desperately try to hang on to them for dear life. I know that specific example might sound like a rather small change but it just reassures me that the team took the time to focus on the smaller details.

The original game I would've given a 9, unfortunately the score the remaster gets is a 8. the main reason for this is the changes made to the multiplayer. Although the multiplayer, by itself, is still fun to play with friends i do find the shoe-horned in micro transaction systems quite disappointing. I also find that the fact that the game of the year edition for this game, the one that came out on the previous generation, had more all the multiplayer maps included than this remaster. Its a shame that modern business tactics and stingy practices have made it into what is relatively a very well made remastering of a classic fps.

    Pros:
    - Great graphical enhancements made
    - Really nice to play memorable sections again in this nicer looking package
    - Gameplay still holds up after all this time
    - Multiplayer still fun and includes new game modes from current COD games

    Cons:
    - Microtransactions shoe-horned into multiplayer
    - DLC maps removed and hidden behind paywalls
    - Friendly AI can be either unhelpful or flat-out annoying sometimes

Dating back to 2011, a year where I thought shooters were disgustingly overrated and not nearly worth the hype that they've gotten (don't worry, I've warmed up to them recently), I was singing the praises for the 4th entry in the ever-so-popular franchise. In a way, it changed how I personally looked at shooters, and it actually showed me that there was certainly quality in the FPS genre. So, when I heard that the game was being remastered for the PlayStation 4, I was ecstatic...well, until I learned that the game was only going to be available if you bought the 2016 title "Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare," which I had already heard was one of the worst titles in the franchise. But then they released it standalone, and I was happy with it!
"Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" has aged tremendously: the action is still intense, the shooting mechanics and controls are still excellent, there's plenty of challenge even on the lower difficulties, and I can still see just how much the game impacted a number of today's shooters. On top of that, the story is thrilling (hard to say that about a Call of Duty game), the presentation is excellent, and the "Remastered" facelift only helps the game look even better. Even as realistic games tend to age worse these days, "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" still looks amazing by today's standards, and it's still a rip-roaring good time regardless of whether you're playing in single player or multiplayer.
Unfortunately, while this is mostly a review of the base game, "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," I do want to knock a point off of this "Remastered" edition. It would have been a 10 under most circumstances, but I'm dropping a point off on account of the many bad business practices involving the remaster, most notably the inclusion of microtransactions. In certain cases, I may be willing to just let it slide, since microtransactions are not exactly mandatory, but given that this is a remaster of a game that's almost 12 years old (9 years at the time of release), I think it's unacceptable that Activision, even while giving the fans what they want, is attempting to nickel and dime consumers in a remaster. Can we please keep these practices outside of remasters? It's not faithful to the original, and frankly, it's insulting.
Rant aside, however, Activision has definitely crafted a wonderful remaster of what is very easily the best game in the long-running "Call of Duty" franchise, and regardless of whether you experience the original version or the remastered edition (preferably the original if you don't want to support the business tactics), "Modern Warfare" still stands tall as a truly amazing shooter.
Final rating: 9 out of 10 "Awesome"

This now 10 year old game has been polished and looks and feels like it fits in with modern games today.
This game features of course a multiplayer mode that is easily the most fun mode of this game, featuring your standard call of duty competitive modes as well as a mode I haven’t seen in a call of duty game before prop hunt where you switch sides being a prop and hiding and being the team searching for the props
though this online multiplayer does add in a loot box system for the modern day to unlock items such as skins
I didn’t find maps to be anything special, but as of right now this is the purest form of simple gunplay offered from a call of duty on current gen consoles, so if that’s what youre searching for you wont be disappointed as shooting is just as smooth and fun as its always been
Speaking of not special though, I havnt played every call of duty game to date, but out of the 6 I have played.. this 6 hours campaign is easily the dullest ive played through…
    its generic and uneventful throughout..
you play through the perspective of 6 different characters, though if I didn’t tell you this you would have no clue, as every character and mission feels and looks nearly identical throughout
This campaign takes place in the middle east and Russia as youre dealing with both a civil war as well as taking out targets responsible for the execution of a middle eastern president..
The level design here is boring
I didn’t play the original call of duty 4 but I had so much dejavu playing this game like ive played it 1 million times before
that’s how uninspired this games design is
everything was so predictable, no cool set pieces or cool moments like call of duty is known for today..
    just your typical linear
go forward and shoot things, and search houses that you know your target isn’t in but do it any way just cause… until you get to the end and climb in a helicopter
ive never been so bored playing through a first person shooter campaign in my life…
    theres just nothing special here….
    its mediocre
For its time Call of Duty 4 may have been a great and innovative game…
But today Modern Warfare Remastered is a collection of a mediocre shooter campaign and an okay competitive mode…
youre better off just waiting down the line for call of duty world war 2 for whats sure to be a much more complete package

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Those born before 1997, remembers the anticipation and success of Modern Warfare very well. But few could expect what this game would generate in the always changing gaming industry. In the good and in the bad.

Plot's cinematographic presentation is successful and impactful, like just few were at that time. Beginning is a bit slow, almost anonymous at times, and in fact it doesn't take off until "Act 2", more or less half the game. The script does not shine, characters are not charismatic except perhaps Captain Price and MacMillan. There are some oddities that frankly are a bit laughable. For example, why are Russian MIRV warheads fated to fall in America? Zakhaev expresses resentment towards the Western world and the son he wants to avenge has died because of a mainly British contingent: he could have bombed at least a dozen European nations, taking less time, with the same missiles. Then, there is no doubt that in a parliament there could be criminals, of course, but seeing Zakhaev being a terrorist who sells nuclear weapons and at the same time chief of a party recognized by the Russian federal assembly seems to be really exaggerated. In short, it's the typical American "America is under attack" drama cliché that is only partially credible and carried to excess. In addition, Russian troops and Russian government are sneakily represented as total incompetent who allow an handful of terrorists to steal one of their missile base without being able to move a finger. Among other things, I didn't like the unequal way missions are distributed among "Acts", and how 2 American missions ("The Bog" and "War Pig") are almost useless and don't present real turning points in the plot.

In 2007, Modern Warfare certainly presented some nice gameplay expedients, such as bullets that can pierce some surfaces based on their resistance, or shooting fire rain from aboard an AC-130. A.I. didn't seem that stupid either: sometimes enemies come looking for the player and they know when to use grenades, for example in order to flush him out when repairing in close spaces. I really liked the shooting feeling, it's possible to feel the difference between using a pistol or a shotgun, or a sub-machine gun. Even characters animations are excellent, especially when the enemies die: it's literally possible to see a grenadier dying and watch the rocket of his RPG being shot in the air, thinking he was aiming at you few instants before. Level design is generally good, more realistic at times, but that does not sacrifice fun. However, in some cases, it presents tortuous and confusing areas, bizarre enemies' spawn and absences of shelters. Difficulty is not exciting, even at the "Regular" level, and it's needed to play at least in "Hardened" to get a real challenge. Then "One Shot, One Kill" mission came. I have no idea who designed that mission. What I know, though, is that I faced difficult games, with more or less balanced difficulties... but only few times I found myself facing such ridicule. Waves of dozens and dozens of enemies that arrived continuously with an attack range of 180 degrees circa, two soldiers alone against the world (and no, it's not as cool and badass as it sounds) and NO EFFICIENT SHELTER or point of advantage studied and put by designers. It seems a mission created almost by random at that point. A sudden rise like this in the general difficulty of the game is disproportionate – previous missions are almost idiot-proof – but it's precisely this mission to be totally imbalanced. Unacceptable: a disaster, a pure game design failure. To this I must add the overall defect in the game longevity, below my expectations and that can be completed in a 2 days of few hours playing sessions.

Modern Warfare's game engine was great for its time, but it lacked in resolution (at least on consoles) to guarantee 60 frames per second. Today this is no longer the case: more advanced technology made possible to reach 1080p, guaranteeing 60fps as well. It doesn't end here: "remastered" is more than ever a wrong term, as Raven Software guys practically rebuilt the game, more like a remake, making it basically leaping a generation forward, into the present. I suggest to check out Digital Foundry's in depth analysis, but know this: it's difficult to play the original Modern Warfare after playing this new version. An incredible tech restoration. Well done Raven.

What remains of Modern Warfare? A memory or something more? A whole generation has now grown up playing this game's legacy and according to many, not without good reasons, this was bad. But concerning the single-player I played, concerning historical value of this game – which is not absolutely perfect, anyway – and concerning the incredible restoration value, I just can positively recommend it. You are playing video game history, whether we all like it or not.

The hit detection is horrendous, like most CoD games, and it was extremely annoying when you shoot and totally hit somebody but it doesn't register. The game also did feel lacking, especially because it was missing 6 of the original maps. And even CoD 4 itself has issues. There are some things in the game that are clearly overpowered or need tweaking, like Juggernaut, nade spam, last stand, and the m16. I know its a remaster and Raven didn't want to change it too much from the original, but I would still like some of those changes. I overall still enjoyed the game though...
...Until Activision had to screw it up. In the recent patch that added the 6 new maps they also added supply drops. It pisses me off that before fixing the hit detection or glitches they add in supply drops. Greedy bastards. Its not even a remaster anymore. "cosmetic only" yeah right. Isn't that what Treyarch said? They're adding supply drops and new weapons to the game so why not make balance changes. Its already been altered to the point where it isn't CoD 4 anymore. And I wouldn't even mind them putting in new weapons (even though it would ruin the "remastered" part of the title) if they weren't in supply drops. But knowing that I'm not gonna be able to use the new weapons unless I spend a crap tone of money and get lucky really pisses me off. And this isn't even its own game; Its an add-on to Infinite Warfare. WTF! Don't try to make me pay for micro-transactions and dlc for a REMASTER of an old game that is a simple bonus you get for buying the legacy edition of IW. You can't even buy it on its own. I knew activision would find some way to screw it up. Sucks this had to happen.

It invigorated a multiplayer base that put itself on the map in the shooter market as a force to be reckon with. It's story was also quite good and offered a in-depth look at global conflicts through the eyes of a soldier. With a 9 and 10 score from many, it was a superb game of its time.

But that time has changed. In the current days of triple-AAA gaming, Call of Duty's publisher's Activision have put the game to ransom on their latest game, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare, in order for people to purchase the remastered version. A very anti-consumer move would be an understatement. Despite this shameful attitude, I still bought both of the games so I could see how good COD4 has stood the test of time.

    Pros:
    1) Graphics have always been criticized in Call of Duty because Activision has a very lazy attitude of updating its engine with better tech that Unreal and Havok have outbeat in for years. It is refreshing to see COD4 Remastered looks absolutely stunning and the textures are nicely done.
    2) Combat is smooth and for game that is almost a decade old, it still feels reliable, quick and satisfying than its original version.
    3) (The good side of the remastered)- having to fight alongside Price, pilot a AC-130 and all the memorable moments in the campaign mixed with the multiplayer bringing back the fun of competitive gaming is really nice and glad it is (mostly) the same old deal with a new coat of paint.

    Cons:
    1) Microtransactions are in a game that is almost a decade old. What a terrible and outrageous thing to even do. It's bad enough Activision wants you to spend 80-100 bucks to play COD4 again but they have the audacity to put game skins and cosmetics in a game that never had it to begin with. It is extremely greedy and absolutely horrid that it makes anyone rating this higher than a 8 absolutely blind to corporate greed and anti-consumer practice.
    2) (Bad part of the remastered)- I think of this similar to the Zebra Striped gum I use to chew and spit out quickly as a kid; It is the same old COD with updated visuals. You will like the nostalgic throwback and feel like COD is back, but yet learn that there are more interesting titles out there (even remasters too) that are far better than this. You will get bored or burn out on it faster than you think. Play a few matches online, sure feels good. After awhile, it feels mundane and shows how classic does not always age well in modern day gaming.
    3) COD's fanbase. The fanbase is infamous for being a series of trolls, children and deviants that will often play loud music, yell trash talk obscenities and say the whole book of cusswords until the world ends. No matter what COD is made now, it will always have that group. The original version was just starting, so it was low-key and tolerable to where it wasn't a nuisance as it is now. As long as this is an issue, I refuse to give the multiplayer a better reception, because even being in a party and getting called terrible things by a man child is no excuse.

COD 4 Remastered is a cautionary tale of anti-consumerism, nostalgia stained by greed, and modern issues in gaming that does not make it better once it is laid out. If you blindly buy this, you are letting it still continue. Play and enjoy the game, but do not expect much that a new game would be better to invest it (or try).

Hands down best cod on the ps4, nothing can come close to it. It plays just like the origonal modern warfare and you will have just as much fun with it. It is well worth the money especially because all the new cods suck. I plan on playing this until they remaster MW2. Even then i will come back and play this one because it is such a well made gam.

Whilst certain games stick in the mind as "Yeah that was a while back" like perhaps Halo or Half Life, it's always slightly disturbing when you realize that COD4 is somehow 12 years old this November '19. When it was released it presented us with what was, at the time, a highly ambitious FPS shooter. Graphically it was incredible, the detail was great, the locales varied, the action constant. The writing was actually a focal point of its efforts. We'd had FPS that pushed narrative to the fore front before but never on this sort of grand, AAA budget level.

So when COD4 released it was universally praised and rightly so but it is high praise that it stands up as well now as it did then.

Firstly a quick mention of the quality of this remaster. Whilst it's become all the rage to remaster anything moderately successful from the past they really did this game justice with their remaster. The graphics are flung into the current gen from the past and it's only when I went to play MW2 after finishing this you realize how much of a difference that is. They've added animations and details that really make this feel current gen but besides that they've not messed with what they know works.

COD4 had the strongest story and writing of the three games I feel. The action is broken up into decently paced and spaced set pieces that are still engrossing. The small interstitial levels where you play a deposed leader on his way to his death or a crash landed soldier really aid in sucking the player into the story. It's not Shakespeare, it's not challenging for the best written game ever but it is definitely a solid action movie type of script that is entertaining even when you know exactly what is coming and quite impressive your first time through.

When this dropped on PS Plus lately I thought I'd give it a go and see if I could still complete the game on Veteran. I did but it must be said that the cheapness of the mode is still as glaringly apparent as always.

If you're going to play COD on Veteran you need to accept a few basic facts. Firstly your enemies do not miss. If there is a pixel of you not in cover they will hit it and basically if they hit you with a decent burst or more then you're dead. Secondly, you do not share this level of accuracy and you can and will miss and this isn't aided by the fact you're taking fire from all sides. Third, somebody gave these guys just a huge wheelbarrow of grenades that they'll launch at you with javelin like accuracy should you stay in one spot of cover for too long. Challenging? Yes but artificially so. Playing on Veteran essentially becomes a lethal game of hide and seek. If you're in the open longer than a few seconds you'll die. Your AI buddies in campaign will be much more rooted to the spot than easier difficulties meaning they generally won't advance until you have and advancing is hardly the easiest thing to do in this difficulty. It's satisfying to complete the game when it has this many advantages over you but there is more than one point where if you don't just chuckle at the absurdity of the difficulty you'll smash your controller instead.

But it is still as awesome to play as ever. The gun fighting, particularly with high stakes damage in Veteran gets your blood pumping. When you can play this game well on the highest difficulty it does make you feel pretty great and frankly it makes the campaign more worthwhile. Playing through on normal difficulty to mop up the achievements you realize how hard you had it on the highest. On regular difficulty it loses a lot of the tension that makes Veteran so enjoyable. Enemies become almost goofy in comparison, missing you frequently, not moving from one cover and your character is practically a bullet sponge in comparison.

A large reason it has remained so good to play is the set-pieces. FPS are doomed to become repetitive or boring and only the best avoid that pitfall. COD4 certainly avoids it and it does so by changing up the locales even if the enemies are basically all the same kind of bullet fodder grunts with little variety. I also think the two story-lines heading toward the same finish helps keep the plot moving along briskly. They built on this superbly in the sequel with an even bigger budget, even bigger locales and even more memorable set pieces but there is something about the first entry I just prefer. It could simply be nostalgia but the quality of the remaster on offer here certainly helps. To play a game you fondly remember but with high quality, current gen graphics is an awesome trip down memory lane and one I have really enjoyed.

This game is the remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, released originally in 2007 on the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC (and some wildly different versions on PS2). So here's a newer version with updated graphics and remade cutscenes! And that's really all that was changed in the Single Player, because most changes are made in the multiplayer.

The single player campaign is pretty much the same as you remember it. The only noticeable difference is that cutscenes have been Michael Bay'd with over the top ridiculous explosions that weren't there before, more focus on popular characters or events and updated sound effects. Graphically the game just looks more like modern Call of Duty titles, but the AI is left untouched.

The multiplayer has undergone a total makeover with pretty much all aspects like UI, banners, lobby screens and most notable: Micro transactions. Guns that weren't previously available in the original game can now be bought, with inclusion of new cosmetics and even randomized loot. As the PS4 edition requires PS Plus to use online features, i only played it for less than 2 hours. But in that time i didn't experience any of the fun or intense gameplay that was featured in the original.

So has this remaster preserved or enhanced the game? No, it hasn't. In fact, it has mostly hurt it, and turned it into a money printing machine for Activision, who had the audacity to resell old DLC for a higher price than it was sold for originally. The integrity of the single campaign has also been influenced, as overblown cutscenes remove the charm that was originally there. Game bugs, bad design decisions and a painstakingly high difficulty curve have been left untouched, even though this part desperately needed some polishing.

Asking yourself if Modern Warfare is a good game is really a matter of what difficulty you play on. Recruit is hilariously easy, and Regular is entertaining but sometimes too easy as well. Hardened poses enough of a challenge, but suddenly gets unforgivingly brutal in certain missions like One Shot One Kill and Heat. And then there's Veteran, which can only be described as descending into the pits of hell as the enemy AI turns into an aimbot with perfect accuracy, reflexes that would make John Wick blush and the multiple arms of Geisha to hurl infinite grenades at you. Wtf Infinity Ward.

So, in summary: No improvements on the original game, yet a lot of greedy additions and overblown remade cutscenes. The game is fun on Regular and Hardened, but is frustrating on Veteran. As remasters go, this one feels shallow and underwhelming. The devs gave the game a new layer of paint, but didn't bother looking under the hood to fix some long standing problems. Still, the game can be a lot of fun when playing the single player at regular and hardened, and i can recommend it for that reason. I give this game a 7/10.

Everything from the gun textures to the grass detail, they nailed it. MWR is on-point with the original game, but with better graphics, textures, etc. But with every COD game, it has it's flaws. First off, the micro-transactions are always a problem, they always have been since BO2. I understand that they can't add updates on the regular without some flow of cash so they don't lose money, but it just gets annoying, especially since some of the DLC guns are pay-to-win (D-25S, BR9, Fang 45, S-TAC Aggressor). I just really don't like how they remaster a game when it was already a master, I mean, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. But it has one great quality that makes it re-playable, the game itself. There was a reason that COD4 was so good back in the day, and it's because it was amazing with an addicting story and a phenomenal multiplayer. And it still has that, Infinity Ward and Raven made a great remaster, and we can't let silly micro-transactions blind us from the real gameplay experience. No one said we had to buy the COD coins, and you can still grind the game to get the DLC guns and melee weapons. I truly think this game deserves just shy of a 10. Expand

Even after nine years and the countless sequels that have come after it, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered shows how good the original game was. The campaign is short but so packed with memorable moments that few would mind some of the residual issues. If you can deal with the addition of cosmetics to appease players who have only come to the series recently, you'll be happy with how the original tenets of the multiplayer portion, from movement to gun balance and map layout, have remained unchanged. It really is too bad that this game won't be divorced from more expensive versions of Infinite Warfare for the foreseeable future, but if you're already committed to spend the extra money, you won't be disappointed.
