The game has a certain degree of tactical depth to it and it's great to try out newly acquired crew or aircraft upgrades. After a few missions, you easily get to grips with the system. Little additions like auto slowdown, when selecting crew, are a nice touch, especially when things get hectic. You have a certain degree of freedom, both in selecting missions from the mini, semi-open world/dynamic feel campaign, and in how you approach a mission, e.g. Conserving fuel and taking the long way around to the target, via plotting your own waypoints, or going in high on a direct bearing, weather permitting. I've played through the campaign and dlc, and I'm now on my second play through. I can't tear myself away, lol.

My only gripe is with the 'cute' art style approach, which looks more at home as a PSVR game. Actually if a PSVR version came out, I would still buy it (It would be great to jump between crew positions in VR and operate the guns), but for a 2D style TV game, they're not really to my tastes. Despite that, you can create wing, nose art and put your own waist text, on the aircraft, so it's not all bad.

In summary, this is a game that is highly entertaining, and one which I would have no problems or hesitations in recommending to people.

Managing an airplane sounds very complicated but Bomber Crew simplifies it to such an extent that it becomes fun. Gameplay is excellent and provides plenty of entertainment and with all the strategical options at your disposal there is plenty of depth here. While audiovisually simple, it simply works. It does feel a bit barren and the controls could have been optimized for the DualShock controller, so take that into account.

Minor gripes aside, the best way to describe Bomber Crew is (if you’ll forgive the attempt at period-accurate officer-class patois) bally good fun! There’s a pleasing amount of depth to the game’s equally impressive array of systems and mechanics, hidden behind a charming, low-res visual style and sense of humour. While the sheer range of customisation options gives players everything they need to put their own, unique stamp on each save file. Hectic, tense, and ineffably satisfying, Bomber Crew is certainly one of the more original and entertaining indie games currently available on PS4.
