To be honest, I was not huge fan of Dark Souls 1. I admired what it was and it's beauty but I just could not bring myself to enjoy that kind of gameplay. To be honest, I was not huge fan of Dark Souls 1. I admired what it was and it's beauty but I just could not bring myself to enjoy that kind of gameplay. Don't get me wrong it's still a great game, just not my cup of tea. So, because of this I didn't bother with any of the other Souls games and when I heard about Bloodborne I avoided it too.

But after months and months I kept hearing about this game from almost everywhere. So, curiosity got the best of me and I got the Game of the year edition.

..... Holy sh!t. This game is awesome!

The difficulty from Souls was there, but in this game it just feels right. Nothing is too difficult once you know what to do, and even then it takes a certain amount of skill and finesse to pull it off. And when you do, it's glorious. You can also choose how to build your character making something all your own. Then, when you finish the game you can start another character and do a completely different build. This almost feels like different game as certain builds work best against certain enemies and others don't.

Visually the game stunning. So much detail everywhere. Atmosphere heavy too.

Now, my biggest gripe with the game is an almost nonexistent narrative. The few NPCs there are don't really serve much purpose, but they are all interesting a shame they don't do more or have more dialogue. Now while I said there is little narrative, there is a ton of lore. It's all over the place and if you have the time and patience to read through it all, you see just how rich and well developed this world is, just a shame there wasn't a more clear narrative. But this is a minor gripe as your sense of exploration does push you forward seeking the next challenge.

As for the DLC add-on, brilliant. A ton of new content and huge new areas to explore. Not to mention some of the best bosses in the game.

    Overall:
I am so glad I gave this game chance and it is the most fun I've had with a game in a while.

    Bloodborne - 10/10

I do not know what is higher, if the difficulty or the quality of the game. Probably the latter. Bloodborne - 10/10

I do not know what is higher, if the difficulty or the quality of the game. Probably the latter.

Bloodborne was the first PS4 game I bought, and now it is also the first really top-quality game I have played on PS4.

I have never played Dark Souls, so this was my first experience with a game of these characteristics. Now I see why the difficulty of these games is close to the mythical: the mere fact of beating Bloodborne requires huge patience, resistance to frustration and, obviously, ability. I have got the 100% of trophies and I would say that beating the game is almost harder than beating the optional dungeons.

In any case, the grandeur of Bloodborne does not lie in its frustrating difficulty, not even in its addictive gameplay, but in the gothic atmosphere, in the settings and in the way the storyline -vague but existing- is told. The graphic quality of the game is simply breathtaking: churches, graveyards, outdoors and indoors places... It is all a visual spectacle. Besides, the music effects are some of the best I have ever enjoyed in a video game. I love these aspects too much to not to rate Bloodborne with a 10 (which I do not give too frequently, by the way).

The DLC is fantastic as well, as it offers an expansion of the game itself: more levels, more incredible places to conquer, more insanely tough bosses.

The only negative aspect that I could highlight is not the difficulty, but the excessive lack of guidance received throughout almost the whole game. I understand that it is designed to offer the player the possibility of moving freely across the different locations and defeating the bosses in any order you want. However, in this case I have really missed elements like tutorials or maps. Maybe I am just awful at these games, but I did not realize that the hunter could run by pressing circle until I had played... more than 30 hours!

To sum up: if you are willing to have patience and play as calmly and consistently as the game deserves (and requires), Bloodborne will show virtues that very few games possess.

Bloodborne: Complete Edition is an outstanding package of a game in quite some time. While some will argue Bloodborne's base game lacked content, The Old Hunters Expansion really adds a significant amount to the game in terms of bosses, weapons, attire and areas. While some will argue Bloodborne's base game lacked content, The Old Hunters Expansion really adds a significant amount to the game in terms of bosses, weapons, attire and areas. Many like to compare this to its Dark Souls comrades (and they are not entirely wrong on doing this) but I like to think of this as its standalone game that takes the Souls mechanics, twists them and pumps them like steroids and delivers an experience that goes beyond the moniker "spin-off". With that mindset, Bloodborne truly excels in virtually all fields and gives a unique experience for new and old.

Playing over 500 hours of Bloodborne as one my first games I got for my PS4 in 2016 was no regret and consider it to be one of the best games of all time. It deserves to be played by anyone interested or a fan of the Soul series. It's atmosphere is spectacular, its combat is aggressive and brilliant, the music is outstanding, some of the bosses are some of the best Souls bosses of the series, really the list can go on and on. It's not perfect however, as online play can be dodgy with connections. Thankfully, it's optional and not a big deal. It might (and always be) a PS4 exclusive, but trust me when I say that Bloodborne is a game worth playing and enjoying. Newcomers might be initially put off, but through training and mastery, you honestly have a wonderfully depressing and beautifully ghastly game that has been a personal treatment for me whenever I am depressed or down on my luck.

Everyone told me to play this game. It was my very first FromSoftware game, and having no experience from their pasts games I expected to have a hard time with it.

So, did it live up to the hype? Yeah! I really enjoyed it, infact, at times I expected it to be more difficult, but overall I think that it's fairly challenging, it knows when to punish you and it knows when to reward you.

I loved the gameplay, it's extremely fun, with some creative mechanics, but sometimes the hitboxes are unpredictable. The first area is quite rough but once you manage to understand how some of the mechanics work, then it's just a joy to play.

The worldbuilding is breathtaking, and the way the world changes when you have more insight is absolutely genius. There's a lot of content, exploring the different areas, uncovering secrets, finding shortcuts, interacting with the characters, completing side stories and taking your time with the game feels very rewarding.

The atmosphere is unrivaled, it's scary & haunting but also beautiful in a very dark way.
I absolutely adore the Gothic-Cosmic Horror theme and the Victorian-era inspired architecture, possibly my favorite setting in a videogame.

The monsters look terrifying, some very interesting designs, and nice symbolisms, I personally killed every single boss - even the optional bosses - and I can say that there are some few tedious bosses but most of them are fun, and require strategy.

The Blood Vial farming is very obnoxious in the beginning, but it's not a big issue once you progress halfway through the game. Having to manage your resources becomes more of a secondary distraction because if you play well, you'll not really need to use healing items, or Blood Echoes.

Now, where the game disappointed me a tiny bit, is the storytelling, I don't mind games that don't explain the story very much, but this game has no build-up at all, and while I think the core story is great, it lacks impact, and if you want to learn why some things are happening, then you'll need to read assumptions & theories from fans which aren't confirmed to be canon, and you'll end up not having an actual answer.

Fortunately the fantastic lore does make up for it, it's very intriguing & rich, full of mini stories.
Overall I enjoyed this game, and I think it's an amazing game, especially if you're a fan of the Soulsborne genre, it's very close to perfection.

So I decided to properly try this game after feeling more sure about abilities in Code Vein, which is essentially an easier version of DS/BB - but with a bit more style in my opinion. So I boot it up, get about halfway into the game and after 20+ hours of game I decided to give my two cents.

So Bloodborne is essentially Dark Souls but in a gothic setting in a british-like place, which was why I wanted to play this first rather than Dark Souls as I was never a huge fan of Dark Fantasy. The game is fairly simple: circle is for dodging, R1 for basic attack, R2 for charge attack, L1 does a switch to your main weapon which is very nice (the axe is probably the best weapon when switched) and L2 shoots your secondary weapon, usually a gun.

The usual Dark Souls thing is here: enemies do a truckload of damage and if you die you lose your echoes, which is your currency/experience/everything in this game. When you die you're forced to get it back or else you'll lose it forever.

Overall I think everyone has an idea of this game by now and I have to say I have fun, but I can't stop thinking about the fact this game is supposedly hard...well it's not really hard, it's just frustrating.

See when I started enemies were doing a lot of damage but that wasn't hard, what was hard was how enemies kept coming from blindspots and cheap shots you from far away, or how certain enemies can stunlock you and kill you in two hits (Hello witches from Upper Cathedral Ward!) and basically how the game will pit you down against unfair challenges...which is why it's hard, but not for good reasons, and I say this because I'm at a point that I "Understand" how the game works and I'm practically living every encounter, including some bosses.

It's hard to explain but what I'm trying to say is every enemy has a gimmick and as soon as you realize said gimmick you'll manage to do most battles without issues because the only real difficulty of this game is the damage you receive and the stamina limit, especially the latter cause it's required for both attacking and dodging, while health becomes less of a problem the more hp you get since defense is not a vital stat.

And this is the part where it should have made me hate the game and ragequit out of boredom and frustration, especially since there's no bloody story - or if there is it's buried beneath the low fps and blur effect the game has, which is a big nuisance after playing games like Code Vein or The Surge - and the thing is...it's addicting as a drug.

Yeah the game has a lot of **** you moments" that a normal person would just quit, which is reasonable, but as soon as you start getting there and manage to "understand" the fights and "understand" what to do, and manage to beat the boss, it's extremely satisfactory: suddenly you have managed to get a step further and more is unlocked, and all you can think is "well now I wonder what's next".

This is how I managed to get so far in this game: it's not the story that caught me, it's not the challenge, it's not the gameplay, it's nothing like that, but what kept me going is the fact that I'm being put to another frustrating moment and the moment I managed to get past over it, it's so satisfactory it's hard to quit: I'm writing this review after killing 2 bosses, one after 2 tries and another on the first try, and I was damn euphoric!

So bottom line, the game is mostly a frustrating mess but if you give it some time and dedicate yourself at least a good dozen hours to sink in you will get yourself a very rewarding game, which is not entirely bad.

I just wished the challenges were fair...you know, like any action game would?

Most bosses were ok, needing a few tries each, but 4 bosses required serious training and retries, of which 1 was the first, 2 are optional bosses, and 1 is the DLC boss.
They might take something like 100 tries, spread over a few days. This depends a lot on proper skilling and focusing on the right techniquies, which I initially had not so much, so I had to overlevel quite a bit.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time researching on mechanics and backgrounds to get the most of the experience. And finally, consider working around the save restraints, this made the game much more enjoyable for me.

This game is a peak of From Software's achievements, it's their's opus magnum without doubt. It's also a game where us, more demanding players, can feel at home.

Bloodborne is the only game in the so called "Souls franchise" which is actually consistent, only game that have consistent and believable world, world in many aspects based on H.P. Lovecraft's literature, yet not limiting itself to its notions.

Coupled with 30 fps and you have a less than ideal situation for an action game. Other smaller things like no respec, and only 1 blood rock can make the game feel a bit restrictive and grindy if you want to utilize more than 1 build. Also, the game could've done with some sort of time of day system. The game is basically always black all the time. A day/night cycle could do a lot for the games visuals and aesthetic. It's something we saw in an early build of the game and I was disappointed it didn't make the final cut. If the rumored PS5 remaster can fix these things while adding some new. Than I think this game would be basically perfect. Obviously, no game is without faults but I feel Bloodbornes would be so minor/subjective that "perfect" would be a legit assessment of this games quality. Expand

Cons: Vial/Bullet system (farming), chalice dungeons, low frame rates, long loading times (fixed for the most part)

Thoughts: As someone who has played all of the Dark Souls series, I was eager to play Bloodborne - a Souls-like game (created by From software) with a twist. For the most part I wasn't disappointed. Bloodborne felt fresh without really changing up the Souls formula too much. However what It did change worked really well mostly.

The setting of the game - Yharnam - is fantastic, dark, and Gothic Victorian-era like, and the enemies fit that theme very well. Everything still has that dark, dreaded felling like the Souls series, but Bloodborne really indulges in this more so.

The combat is the star of the show. Everything is faster, parrying is now more important that ever and the health system where you can get back lost health by attacking really changes the style of combat from the Souls series in a good, fresh way. The weapons with their two mode play style (default - less damage, faster and mode 2 - more damage, slower) also adds an element of thought and tactics to each encounter as well. The DLC like all fromsoft titles builds upon the game and adds new bosses, enemies, weapons that improve on the base game's foundations.

Whilst I did enjoy the changes there were some things/experiences that brought the game down a bit in my opinion. For one, while the vial/bullet system works well and plays in to the game's fast nature, the having to farm these items when they've run out to continue the game - especially when stuck on a boss - is very time-consuming, boring and annoying. It also wrecks the flow of the gameplay; one minute you are fighting a boss and getting to know it's moves, the next you're forced to go and farm for vials/bullets which really ruins the experience.

The game itself can also affect the quality of gameplay. Long loading times on menu screens after you've died (thankfully fixed in updates) as well as stuttering framerates when much is going on (which happens quite a bit) are a problem sometimes but overall don't really inhibit the players experience.

The worst part of the game are the chalice dungeons. Chalice dungeons are separate to the main game, and are this Zelda-like areas which players battle through. These chalice dungeons are soul crushing. They are so boring, mainly due to the same environments/level design elements popping up again and again and agains. The only thing worth punishing yourself for is that fact that there are chalice dungeon bosses which aren't in the main game/story mode, and getting easy money. Otherwise these dungeons are terrible.

Overall Bloodborne is a good game. Do I prefer it over any of the souls games? No, however it appears to be just a matter of opinion and preference, as I can see why most people who play this game give it rave reviews, but the negatives of the game really affected my time in the game more than I though they would.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So after about 32 hours (I don't think PS shows it) and level 100, I finished the main game and DLC and it happened again. Fromsoftware made a terrific game. I had a lot of fun with the game, but also a few moments that made me feel a little "desperate". However, the game keeps pulling you under its spell and it's worth sticking to it!

    Atmosphere / graphics

I really like the art style of the game. Bloodborne sometimes has extremely disgusting, disgusting pictures, but they are appropriate and contain a strange aesthetic, that's phenomenal in terms of setting and design, as well as the world building. Everything fits organically into the look of the game world and especially with many bosses there are real highlights of the look and the presentation (e.g. Vicar Amelia, placenta shrimp swingers from Kos, Ludwig, Amme etc.). The incredibly different creativity in the design of opponents is also astonishing. The developers were allowed to let off steam here, which I thought was great.

It's just a really cool look. The music is chosen so great again (e.g. during the clock tower fight with Maria).

In terms of performance, it was always a bit rough, which I thought was a bit of a shame, but it wasn't a big deal. On the other hand, at the beginning I even had a few glitches of despawning loot or loot that was floating out of reach in the air and the game even crashed once. Not a big deal either, but I never had it with Dark Souls.

I found the Hain as a hub nice and felt right at home.

    story

That the whole thing happens in this long night or in the hunter's dream, I find it cool, I like that very much. You really have the feeling that you have a task and that you have completed it step by step in order to escape it all. Otherwise it remains that it is told in a more cryptic way. Occasionally one finds such hints that lorries give out or items or even NPCS give you nibbles about the story over and over again.

Unfortunately, I didn't manage to complete a single side quest in Bloodborne either, I just can't do it in the first round of the game. I can hardly criticize that because it would work, but it is somehow unsatisfactory not to get this NPC quest done.

    Gameplay

You know it: the heart of the Soulsborn games and that is especially true of Bloodborne. The dynamics in combat gameplay are just amazing. I used R1 + L1 combo as an example so often and so gladly. This dynamic change between 1h and 2h was so much fun. Especially that you are invited to try out the different weapons to see the combo gameplay, terrific.

The firearm and the integrated parry system have also turned out to be a sensible alternative to the shields in Dark Souls and, admittedly, this made parrying a bit too easy. I almost finished the final boss with my fists and parry, that says it all.

Most of the boss fights in the main game were too easy for me. There was more appearance than reality. But the ways to bosses or just individual trash mobs were really crisp. The girl band brains are my absolute hate opponent in all soul titles to date, terrible. The DLC comes up trumps again, because here the bosses are of a completely different caliber and here too the DLC is introduced with exactly the right boss. This immediately shows the difficulty of the DLC and teaches you respect. That's how it has to be for me with soul titles.

There were a few things I didn't like that much. On the one hand the beacons. I was a little annoyed that you always had to go back to the grove, because the loading screens could be a bit long at times. I would have liked more direct travel routes. On the other hand, I found it cool that you couldn't simply re-spawn your opponents and that you could repeat your life by sitting down for a moment, which made it a little more difficult.

The blood vials were a kind of love-hate relationship, on the one hand they made the game more difficult than the Estus, because sometimes you had to deal with things tactically, on the other hand, the Estus somehow had more flair for me. Estus could be upgraded, etc. You were always really happy about it, you just noticed the vials and made sure you weren't wasting too many.

The sidesteps weren't my thing either and unfortunately I didn't manage to switch properly between lock on (steps) and lock off (roles). I just like the role better. In the end I found this Lifesteal mechanic in and of itself really awesome, because you can be rewarded for aggressive gameplay, especially with trash mobs, and it also feels very good. In bossfights, however, I never really managed to get a satisfactory return from the risk I had taken. Maybe it's not really intended for boss fights, but I would have liked to have used this feature more aggressively there.

The weapons and armor are really cool and fit well into the game (I had a saw ax +10). When it comes to armor, I finally wish for an upgrade depth.

    But all in all 10/10

Bloodborne make good job to bring cosmic horror in gameworld. You don't know what is happening, you just a hunter that kills beasts. But something else is going on. Game keeps secrets, you have to try to unlock them yourself.
You getting better to kill beasts, but they are getting worse deeper you go into this world. But in this world there is something more wrong then just beasts.

The way the game plays is so different depending on whether you go for a skill, strength or another type of build. There may not be as many weapons as DS but for me that is a good thing because every weapon is good quality offers a very unique style of play. You focus your level ups on the type of weapon you want to use and you can really see the progress with your build.

The game also does an excellent job building up tension and atmosphere, the first time I played through it I genuinely felt scared wondering what was around the next corner. There are an excellent variety of enemies and you need to adjust your approach accordingly. The boss design is excellent and while challenging the fights are fair you feel a real sense of accomplishment when you win, the DLC has especially impressive bosses. The combat is extremely satisfying no matter whether you go for a quick skill build or power and strength.

One negative comment is the later bosses in the main game are devalued because you have powered up so much during the DLC. On the first play through I never realised that you had to finish the DLC before finishing the main game meaning my first play through of the DLC was in NG+ which was a constant struggle.

Overall the game is a masterpiece

I got to say, as someone who didn't play any Souls games properly before, I was excited to play Bloodborne.
Just like in the Dark Souls games, Bloodborne's lore is told via environmental storytelling. Environmental storytelling might not be as engaging as linear storytelling but it enriches the game's world significantly. Thankfully enough, Bloodborne's lore is compelling even if it's

Just like in the Dark Souls games, Bloodborne's lore is told via environmental storytelling. Environmental storytelling might not be as engaging as linear storytelling but it enriches the game's world significantly. Thankfully enough, Bloodborne's lore is compelling even if it's ambiguous for the most part.
The gameplay surprised me a lot; it's faster than I expected, it feels very satisfying, the mechanics are wonderful, there's a nice amount of unique items and the trick weapons are so goddamn badass, they're one of the coolest things in the entire game for me.
My favorite part of the game isn't the gameplay though, it's the haunting and frightening setting; Bloodborne's world is probably the best world I've seen in a videogame. It starts out as a gothic horror and it slowly transcends into a nightmarish cosmic horror that is able to find beauty in the dark. On top of that, the level design and the music are just perfect.
The graphics are not necessarily impressive but they're really good nonetheless.
Also, the bosses are intimidating, challenging and rewarding.
However, many of the bosses in the main game are somewhat easy and underwhelming in my opinion, but fortunately, the DLC makes up for it; The Old Hunters is essential to own if you enjoy playing Bloodborne because it features the best bosses in the entire game.
Now, while the gameplay is very enjoyable, the camera and the lock-on system are awkward at times, and farming for Blood Vials can be tedious at times.

    Pros:
    + Intriguing lore
    + Aggressive & diverse gameplay
    + Superb setting
    + Threatening & challenging bosses
+ Incredible level design and music
    + Amazing DLC

    Cons:
    - Flawed camera and lock-on system
    - Blood Vial system

    Gameplay: 9/10
    Content: 9/10
    Music: 10/10
    Graphics/Audio: 8/10

    Final Rating: 9.5/10
    - Outstanding -
Bloodborne is a fascinating videogame experience in almost every way, and I wish could play it for even longer.

    Do I recommend it?:
Definitely! It's worth playing this game just for the setting alone.

    『DARK SOULS』
