Blacklight Retribution wants to be the dominant freemium shooter on it's switch to consoles but has almost no different factors from other freemium shooters on the market. Guns sounds are good and music is okay now that we are done with the positives lets get down to the long list of reasons why this game can't compete with other games in it's category.
*Dull experience all the game has to offer and the premise of it is a future-war scenario where agents fight each other
*Pay-2-Win expect many of the players at the top of the leaderboard to have bought premium weapons and armor
    * Long unnecessary respond times
    * Frequent lag
    * Poor ai on training mode they will glitch and just stand in place
*No battle chatter or differing characters in practice mode (bots)
    * Must buy guns with real money to actually keep them and the ability to even rent or keep guns for a week shows the game doesn't have a strong leveling system.
    * Uninspiring death animations which almost look identical and is always in slow-motion.
    * Lazy gun variation many of the weapons look the same and the only difference is the name
*Bad spawns and map design where one team will be decimated once the other team reaches their location due to the fact they spawn directly behind them instead of the usual front spawn
And that is the list of issues that break Blacklight: Retribution it is obvious the developers do not care of fixing these problems and the game cannot offer as much immersion as more expensive shooters but cannot even differentiate itself from free-to-play fps's leading to a poorly made experience.

I am still stuck on my original Assault Rifle and Light Pistol, and I can't escape from how bad those weapons work. The renting system is good for people who want a taste of the weapons, but it is really stupid. The game isn't half bad, it provides Call Of Duty type shooting mechanics. The customization is stupid. Overall, BLR has okay graphics, it's a fine shooting game, but it's terriblee because of it's free to play model. It isn't worth the free download this time. Expand

The series has never really caught on, however, in a time when great games like Planetside 2 and TF2 dominate the free-to-play FPS market. Despite this, Zombie Studios has nevertheless decided to rerelease the series's latest release, Blacklight: Retribution, on the PS4. Unfortunately, Blacklight's debut on the PS4 suffers from much of what crippled it in in the past. The game of what crippled it in the past Even with a solid connection, the game will occasionally lag, and finding a match often took several minutes. Considering the game is still in its beta phase, these flaws are understandable, although they do make the game feel rushed. As is the case with most free-to-play games, Retribution sports a pay-to-win philosophy. In other words, you provide the cash, and the game provides the weaponry. This aspect drastically changes the experience, as even the most skilled players are mauled down by recruits with heavy arsenals. However, once you get past the rather unfair side of Retribution, the game can actually be quite fun. Great map design and well though out game types make Retribution worth checking out. In terms of visuals, Retribution looks great for a free-to-play, but poor for a next generation title. Textures lack in detail, and none of the environments stand out. If there's one thing in Retribution that looks great, its the guns. Each weapon has its own feel and look, adding to the experience. Overall, Retribution doesn't disappoint, but it doesn't stand out either. If you some free time, and are craving a quick multiplayer match, look no further than Blacklight: Retribution. Expand

I like all the game modes and the levels and the equipment you can win while playing the match, like a suit of amor(big mech thing)

the reason this gets a 3 would be after you play for a bit and get to where you can start upgrading and qualifying for new weapons and equipment, you then realize that the longest amount of time you can have anything at all is 1 week. you can unlock stuff with money you get from winning matches, but anything and everything is 1,3 and 7 days and can only rent it for that long.

unless you spend real dollars to buy a different kind of in game currency then you cannot get the weapon or equipment permanently. any other f2p game I have tried lets you buy the weapon(permanently) with money you win or money you pay for. it has never made me rent equipment and weapons if I wanted to use them.

so unless im fairly awesome and winning thousands daily and playing for hours a day, then there is no way I can win enough from matches to keep all the equipment that I want to use each time I play. so there is no way I can casually play this game.

try this game out for yourself, it is free and no need to take my word on it, fun to play like any shooter game but loses its fun when you cant keep any equipment without constantly renting it or throwing down lots of real cash to keep it. just to clarify im fine with paying for things but they normally give the option of paying for it with in game currency also, this is the only game I have found that doesn't let you do that.

to clarify, im not giving it a 3 simply cuz i have to spend money for stuff, graphics are not that great to me for a PS4 game even if its free, the heavy Pay to Keep and/or Win model is annoying, also game is laggy no matter what, PC was like this also. but if im gonna spend money on a Free to play title, i would wait for something worthwhile like Planetside 2 which should come out soon enough for PS4. otherwise try this game out on PC or PS4 and see for yourself.

This game would be well worth the grind if it wasn't for the stupid renting system in place.

So basically what you have to do is find a favourite load out and then keep buying it over and over.

I have confidence free-to-play games can work but this isn't the way.

Great game, bad ass experience everytime, could have more bells and whistles but not really needed with all the customization and plus it's totally Free to play, I downloaded it as soon as my PS4 came home at launch and was like damn this is awesome, a free call of duty type online experience. Downside is the glitches and the lag times and also random server migrations.

This game also features a wide variety of maps and most modes should feel somewhat familiar to those of you who have played FPS games before. Blacklight Retribution now also features Onslaught mode which encourages players to team up and take on wave after wave of enemies while gaining xp and gp in the process. as far as free to play fps titles available on PS4 this one has to be the best one out there. The jumps are floaty, but the gun physics feel punchy and sound like futuristic beasts. The graphics aren't super amazing like Battlefield, but they do look cool, and the map design is very good. The game also features heavy gun customizations, from stocks to scopes, everything but camos effect your guns stats, even keychains. This leads to very cool ways of making your guns match your play style. You can up your stopping power in return for lowered speed and agility, lower your accuracy and up your recoil in turn for fast movement and weapon handling, or balance the two for a perfect for all situations. As a gun enthusiast, this is a very cool feature and adds a new element to the FPS genre games like Battlefield and Call of Duty wish they could do. While it isn't fully finished, Blacklight: Retribution shows great promise as a PS4 F2P title, and once the game is out of beta, I would say check it out, as it does have connectivity issues and frame rate problems at the moment. The reason being that I played Blacklight Retribution. The game has an appealing setting, good graphics, excellent map design and most importantly the black light which allows you to see through wall and track other players. This is a game changer for me. I hate spawning only to be killed by a sniper off in some unknown direction which happens often in typical FPS. I also hate running around looking for the fight, especially on larger maps. Blacklight solves these issues beautifully by allowing all users to find each other on the map by seeing through walls at the touch of a button. I simply love the feature. I also really like the balancing. Every gun has positive and negatives, so no gun is truly better than the default one, no matter how much you spend. In this respect, the game is really not fpay to win, unless you are horrible with a machine gun. Paying basically gives you fun tools to use, but in no way guarantees survival. All the best stuff is paid for in CP, a currency earned based on success in a match. With CP, you can rent rocket launchers, heal yourself and even hop into a mech suit! there is also another currency for renting different guns and customization parts. A decent player cah have a different gun every day, since it costs the winnings of 1-2 matches to access them. Again, I'm sorry to say but most reviewers unfairly hate on this game. I chose to spend $40, but only because I was having so much fun. I got a lot of equipment (and everything I wanted) for that price, especially because I watched for sales (click the touch pad for sales). Compare this to COD or Battlefield that require $120 ($60 game +$60 season passes) to have all the content, per year.

In summary, if you're tired of the same old war scenario and want to enjoy an exciting game with an interesting mechanic, try Blacklight.

I successfully found one, and played for a couple of hours, racking up points and XP despite being killed by opponents with better gear and equipment, and then afterwards, when I went to go look for new equipment to buy with the hard-earned in-game points, I learned something. You cannot permanently unlock a single thing with in-game "GP"! I thought it was a sick joke, and looked everywhere for proof otherwise! To my astonishment, I was greeted with screens asking me to pay for in game "Premium Currency", otherwise I could only drop a couple thousand hard-earned "GP" to "rent" the gun and equipment for a maximum of one week. Do not be fooled people, this is a straight, 100% PAY-TO-WIN, BETA game. It's similar in purchasing to League of Legends, where they rotate a "Hero" character that is free to play, but you have no access to their abilities or such, and everything is consumable. Even the in-game "depot" shop is similar to League of Legends. I know it's an odd comparison, but it is literally the same pay-to-win mechanic, so do not come and play this game expecting it to be free, it really isn't, and I think Zombie Studios should feel guilty about releasing this poor of a beta to the world, and admit that they lied about this game being free. Companies like this are the worst of the worst as far as money-grubbing goes. Expand

    My PSN ID is: TheRiseOfHelghan

I'm a top skilled player in Blacklight: Retribution and I do my kills mostly with my gun that isn't overpowered and I don't rely on help (tossing grenades, jumping in a Hardsuit robot, using rocket launchers, hiding behind shields, calling in Airstrikes to take out opponents, nor using guns that 1 shot kill).

Add me if you're a good player and you can do kills mostly only using your primary gun.

    I give this game a 10/10!

Picture a game with the same network issues like call of duty ghost: host migrations, random deaths and massive lag in almost every game but you have to pay for everything like guns, armor etc, that is blacklight retribution in a nutshell.

Blacklight: Retribution can easily stand tall with the competitive online shooters on the PS4. Zombie Studios' focus solely on multiplayer makes for a surprisingly good game highlighted by its balance and gameplay that also just happens to be free-to-play.

You are getting some high-quality multiplayer action without paying a cent. That being said it's not hard to notice the plethora of microtransactions the game tries to get you with.

These microtransactions allow you to customize your armor, weapons, and other things like taunts. Each give you different stat boosts and tradeoffs. You don't have to buy anything with real money to experience the game. You can buy the majority of things with the in-game currency you get from matches and the whole thing favors skill over gear. That means this is far from pay-to-win. Those who don't want to put down any real money, but still get weapon attachments and other things still can. It's just going to require grinding.

If you can look past the game's numerous attempts to reach into your wallet then you'll find a very good multiplayer shooter. Matches are fast and fun. The shooting mechanics are good enough to rival the best of it's triple-A competition. The fact that it's free to play makes it all even more appealing, even if those microtransactions make sure you they're there.

It's a shame that one of free to play's most annoying traits is present here. Just the in your face presentation of microtransactions is likely to turn some people away. However those who look past them and actually start playing will realize that they don't hurt the actual gameplay of the package. Just it's presentation.

You don't have to spend a single cent on this game and can still compete with the best players so long as you have the skills. It's not pay-to-win, it is completely free, and it's just a darn good FPS. So if you are looking for a fresh face to add into your multiplayer rotation then this is a great, free game to try out. The top-notch shooting it offers are more than enough to keep you coming back. Did I mention it's free?

I am really enjoying this game. As you kill more and more you build up credits in order to buy upgrades and special guns and a mini-Titanfall robot you get in and shoot like a tank or minigun. All the guns feel the same in BF4 but in Cod-G they are more "solid" and distinct...like the AK-12 on Cod is amazing but in BF4 it's "meh". Blacklight guns shoot like Cod guns. Also there is a Halo-type visor so when you press R1 it displays where everyone is as you look as if there were no walls or see-through walls for a second or two. I especially like that on this game I am always near the top scores where-as in BF4 and Cod-G I am usually near the middle. I think a fair and reasonable score is 8/10 WITH a disclaimer saying it LOOKS like a PS3 game. Nothing "Next-gen" here which pulls it down to 7/10. Expand

This is like crying that PS2 is P2W when people have sub 10BR characters across 6 servers and get 2k/d in 48vs48 fights.
TL;DR don't take up on the tears about games being P2W. Do your research and find out if there is anything that is simply far out of reach without cashing in big time. BL:R never had anything like that, and it would be dumb of Zombie to steer away from that.

If you did pay 5 bucks- Congratulations! You're actually enjoying the game and able to take full advantage of the game's STRONGEST feature: Customization. Seriously, this game's customization truly makes you feel like a gun manufacturer and you can customize EVERYTHING about your character and it helps you go though the minor grinding this game has you do. The game still isn't perfect since it still has bugs and glitches and can be unstable at times. The HRV and depot and customization all make black-light retribution a flawed but good FPS. (score-7.5)

If you didn't pay the 5 bucks- You're absolutely raging how this is a pay to win game (Which it sort of is to a certain extent. Depends on where the money is used on. To me buying the pass is ok.) You're probably spending half your time in the game staring at all the guns and parts and armor in the shop wishing you could permanently buy them for free. You're also probably getting your ass handed to you by those who spend like $50 on this game (I support your frustration) and probably already went AWOL by now. Telling you to spend 5 bucks probably won't cheer you up so I won't force you. (Score 5-6 depending on your internet and glitch issues.)
Ironically when I was looking at Advanced Warfare game play it looked just like blacklight retribution.

I honestly love this game in all of its glory. Unlike the copy and paste that BF and CoD is, Blacklight actually has a unique twist, HRv. HRv is, in a nutshell, a legalize wall hack. It allows you to see through walls to see teammates, enemies, depot (more on these later), and objective. The game has many staple gamemodes to the FPS genere, such as TDM, DM, KC, SnD, and a few others. TheI honestly love this game in all of its glory. The game has many staple gamemodes to the FPS genere, such as TDM, DM, KC, SnD, and a few others. The ability to customize everything from the muzzle of your gun to the color of your armor (which can be anything from pink to blue to different camos) makes this game rank among one of the most customizable games out there, with millions of weapon combos, and thousands more armor combos. And what it sometimes lacks in grafics, it makes up in extremely fast paced action. The depot is another unique feature in the game, allowing you to take the points (CP) you earn from getting kills and doing objectives, and turning them into ammo/healthh refils, mini guns, airstrikes, A GIANT MECHAROBOT SUIT, and a bloody Katana. Yes, a katana.

A lot of people will also say that the game is pay to win, and all I say to those people is add an "L" to pay, because this game is Play to Win. As long as you put the effort and time into the game, you can easily get the best stuff in the game in less than a week, with enough points to keep them for a long time. The game has two types of currencies, the first being the one earned through playing, called GP, and the second earned through paying, called Z-Coins. Z-coins basically allow you to bypass the level restriction on weapons and armor, making it useful, but not necessary to have fun. I made it a good third of the way through the game before buying some z-coins, and I didn't buy them because I thought I needed them to improve my experience, I bought them to support the devs.

All in all, the game is by far my favorite on the PS4.

    Cool Game,
Its Like Free Version of Call of Duty Series with no Camping!
and Its Customation Feature is Really Awesome!
and Most Important thing is that Game is Highly Balanced, Stock Guns are not Useless and they are almost power full as others!!!
    I Really Love It!

The game could be a lot of fun if it wasn't filled for with a bunch of bugs.
In my experiences the game likes to have who ever has the worse connection to host. This means the majority of the time you are left lagging and getting frustrated when you're just about to kill someone for them to then dissapear, reappear behind you and kill you.

As for the pay to play aspect, personally i don't find it that important. Unless you want a new gun, taunt or player design, its not really worth the money to upgrade anything.
Ive noticed in the many games i've played that players as high as level 25 will still use the same class set up you're given at lvl one.
I do think this game is worth more than the five i gave it, but until the bugs are fixed i'm unable to fully enjoy.

Its just another call of duty, time to kill is WAYYYYYY too short, which kills any bit of fun the game may of had. Servers are dead as well, I used quick join function, i ended up in a deathmatch of just me and one other person. On top of that, its also pay to win. The game had promise but failed to deliver.

Either you refuse to pay for microtransactions and be clung for the entirety of the game with the same weaponry from the onset. Or you pay for microtransactions and are granted the capacity to customize, upgrade and rent weaponry. They made the game free-to-play with a caveat -- pay with money to appreciate the experience.

Story and characters do not play a large part. Frankly, the game probably has an account -- either it was too obscure or did not manage to grab my attention.

  3. In its defence, Retribution is free to play – so while it can’t compete with Killzone Shadow Fall, that’s an unfair expectation to begin with. But it’s still a PS4 release, and in this regard feels like a grubby stowaway that’s snuck aboard a glitzy cruise liner bound for the golden shores of next-gen.
