Being as this is a spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead, the fact that they left out split screen, which is basically the only way I played Left 4 Dead, has ruined this before I even played it. Then they took progression away for single player. If you didn't want people to play solo or with friends at home why did you not make it online only.

This game has AWFUL input lag on PS4. Unplayable. If you only have access to PS4, definitely skip this game. There's a reason there aren't any critic reviews for this version of the game.. I got a refund.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This plays so bad. It’s slow, laggy, the controls are unresponsive and clunky. Trying to aim accurately is almost impossible. The graphics glitch out all the time leaving main characters spinning round in circles on the spot. It might be better on other platforms but it’s pretty awful on the PS4 to the point I’m minded to ask for a refund. They need to recall or fix this significantly. Expand

Overall it does not have the same impact that Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 had, but it is the closest to Left 4 Dead 3. While repetition sets in fast with level structure and mission objectives Back 4 Blood offers a wide range of customization with character, weapons, gear and teammates. As a spiritual successor for Left 4 Dead, Back 4 Blood is great to pick up with a few friends by your side, no matter on what platform they play - at least for a night or two. Although it´s gameplay is really fun besides some annoying bugs and horrid soloplay, the game fails to offer enough endgame-content to motivate much further than for it´s six to ten hour long campaign.

Its left 4 dead, just not nearly as good. Get spit on? Horde. Bump into a car? Horde. Scare a bird? Horde. Open a door? Horde. Ai is brain dead. Its just boring and irritating. Pale imitation of L4D

"back4blood is a very good game" -someone who never played left4dead. Honestly idk how you could look at this game and l4d and say this is an improvement over the latter, it apes the classic gameplay sure but with none of the charm or style. The absence of campaign vs is strange since that was such a big reason the original games lasted so long, the swarm vs mode in back4blood is awful by"back4blood is a very good game" -someone who never played left4dead.

So all in all, it may not be Left 4 Dead and while there are things missing, in the end however, Back 4 Blood is a very good game that is worth the time to play and recommend.

Lower framerates, occasional stuttering, and small delays in loading/selecting cards can make the experience a little frustrating on console. Moreover the aiming system is cumbersome--it just doesn't really feel smooth. The auto-aim can drag your crosshair into allies when it tracks rushing horde, leading you to harming your teammates. Sure there are options to turn the auto-aim off or modify it but this will of course make it a lot harder to hit enemies. You are limited in mapping buttons; I can't for example switch circle and R3 for melee/crouch. All this is to say that it feels much harder to keep up with my friends on pc, especially at higher difficulties.

Other annoying things are the matchmaking doesn't always refill your lobbies when people leave and the game feels very lonely when you aren't playing with others. While the bots are somewhat competent, they are very glitchy and the AI is not the smartest. There is a large spike in difficulty in going from recruit to veteran. Sometimes it seems like enemies can hit you through the walls or behind cover. The attachment system is very frustrating; there have been a number of times I "ruined" the weapon I had been using because I accidentally attached a horrendous 4x scope to it which you cannot remove (unless you find another sight to replace it).

But I still enjoy it with friends. Once you get used to the diversity of special infected units, you start to learn different ways to counter them. Similarly, as you unlock more cards, you find more ways to approach the game that you can adapt your play style. The different cards played against you for each map ensures that replaying parts will be a little different each time. In short, the more I play the more depth the game seems to have. I just hope some of the quality of life issues and bugs get patched out and I wish the difficulty jump wasn't so sharp. And if you have the choice, I would probably recommend getting it for pc instead of ps4.

Now I will say this is a game you NEED friends to play because the bots are absolutely braindead. Now they will kill zombies but expect them to get stuck on level geometry and don't expect them to do any heavy lifting. Playing solo for a bit makes you realize this immediately. It almost feels like the game punishes you for playing by yourself.

Now I did join a quick match but playing with random people is only slightly better as they most likely won't have mics and it makes it hard to communicate. I also tried hosting my own campaign but in doing so you will end up possibly sitting there for a few minutes until you decide to just jump in without the 3 other random players, in which case you may as well play solo.

It isn't a bad game but I really need to play this game with my friends, hopefully soon, to get a better experience.

A shockingly disappointing experience. Anyone hoping this will match the raucous highs of Left 4 Dead 2 will be sorely, sorely disappointed. Even when playing this with friends, I found this to be a generic, uninteresting experience.

Give this a pass unless you are unable to live in a world without something resembling Left 4 Dead 3. Even then, temper your expectations.

let's start off at the beginning as the game offers you a "tutorial", well i say tutorial, i mean a "prologue". I think that's the word these developers were looking for with this game. Honestly, i think valve has had them chained in a basement since the last left 4 dead and they've never played a game since. And it shows. Oh boy does it show.

Honestly, i think valve has had them chained in a basement since the last left 4 dead and they've never played a game since. And it shows. Oh boy does it show.

Now Dark Souls, when you first play it, is a difficult game. It's almost unnerving how quickly you may die but it tells you what button is what and gives you the bare bones of how to play. As you'd expect from a game tutorial.

This game doesn't tell you the controls, the buttons, what everything is for or anything useful. Just puts you straight into the, say it with me, "prologue" (act 1). If you leave a game you're put into "a hub" of sorts and it gives you a couple of terrible videos about supply lines and cards. As long as you go into the menus and look for them, it'll do that.

I know you don't start from the hub, as part of the tutorial, you're not shown around the camp. Giving the basic thing we all expect, and, then put into the action. Which just baffles me to be honest. As for the videos above, they explain a system without explaining the system. Play the game and it eventually becomes clear (eventually). It's just terrible.

It all feels rushed. Really rushed. From the security doors (you can't disable) and just wait until zombies appear as you stand around, and one eventually breaks the door without the alarm going off (i kid you not). It's badly designed, badly choreographed and just feels off.

I'm not going to talk about the useless bots, the useless bunched up bots which supposedly "help" you if you wanna play the campaign solo. Oh gawd. Don't do that. It just makes the game much much worse. It's fun seeing them yell out things like "molotov grenade", and you see 3 of them in the chest you just opened. So thanks for the headsup, i was suddenly blind for a second. But they won't pick up or use any of them. It's just frustrating.

The AI of the zombies isn't much better, in the first few chapters you'll find the tallboy, exploder and stinger almost together ALL the time. All three will suddenly appear. It'll break any suspense they were going for... and makes you wish you were playing left 4 dead.

I like to pretend this game doesn't exist, it's not something i'd ever force my friends to play. It's not fun. There's no depth unless you enjoy collecting "cards" which make little to no difference and enjoy "customisation" to show off to the same friends you're probably playing with.

This shouldn't have been made. Like the Batman & Robin (1997) film, i'm going to pretend this doesn't even exist.

I enjoyed the game with my friends on recruit difficult but the last mission was very very hard for us. Fortunately we beat the last boss but the difficulty difference was too high. The card system was not too clean but the gameplay was smooth.

A worst experience of Left 4 Dead 2. Some of combat is funky, not having couch multi-player and some performance issues such as input lag and drop frames when hordes appears, make this game feels like a beta test.

Back 4 Blood is unquestionably a fun multiplayer zombie killfest but its card system is a bit light on the novelty side of things, and we can't help feeling that the game is still a bit of a Left 4 Dead 3.

It’s safe to say that we’re probably not going to be getting a Left 4 Dead 3 in our lifetimes, but Back 4 Blood is going to be as close as we’ll get in the time being. The game preserves mostly everything that made the two Left 4 Dead games so great while integrating it into the modern gaming sphere.
