Active Soccer 2 DX is what happens if you copy a twenty year old game but forget to put in any pride, professionalism or playtesting. It’s better than Kick Off Revival though. And that’s what we in the business call the faintest of praise.

Take this game for what it is, a $10 PSN arcade soccer game that is a modern take on Sensible Soccer, but with more features.

Fast 3-button gameplay that is pick-up-and-play, but has plenty of depth is what this is about. You get access to all kinds of tournaments, cups, leagues, a Career mode, and teams that can be edited, if you feel the need.

The game is fast and fun, games only take a few minutes and that feels about right. You can adjust a lot of things to your liking: AI difficulty, weather, ball, game length, camera, pitch view, etc.

This game is everything I'd hoped it would be, and if I'd paid twice as much I would've been OK with it. Sports sims have gotten to the point that they can be more complicated than I want - or at least more complicated than I want ALL THE TIME. So having a fun, arcadey soccer game really hits the spot.

Arcade sports games can be very fun if they're done right.

Active Soccer is basically an updated Sensible Soccer, or Championship Soccer '94, as it was called on the SNES/Genesis.

The controls are smooth, there are only 3 buttons to worry about, and overall it captures the right feel of the old SWOS games. Nothing is perfect, sometimes your players seem to avoid taking a pass more than receiving it, and goal keepers will sometimes seem to teleport a meter to the side to make a save.

BUT: those are small issues that don't really detract from the game for me. It's fun and it's fast and there are plenty of options for the camera, zoom, difficulty of the AI, etc. and there are all the friendly, league and cup competition options you could want (and a Career mode). If you must have real players, you can edit teams to your heart's content. I don't have the patience for that, so I just play with the made up names.

A game takes about 5 minutes - so you can breeze through a cup or season without it turning into a slog. This is exactly how I want my arcade-style sports games to work. This game is about fun and simple-but-deep controls. I think it's fantastic. I just came across this by chance on PSN and gave it a shot and it's more than worth the $10 being charged.
