This is the game that all fans were waiting for a whooping 12 years. This is a piece of an art, polished to a highest degree. The team behind this are professionals and their passion for the airplanes is absolute. Visuals and soundtrack will completely blow you away.
Gameplay has a great value of replayability without getting you bored.
Don't buy this solely for VR, enjoy the story instead.

To me Ace Combat was always more about the mix of great music with great gameplay, even more so considering it's arcade origin. In that regard, this game is more than successful.
In regards to the campaign, the story could be better presented.
The multiplayer has a great fun factor but lacks diversity. Overall, it's a great Ace Combat game but it still needs to improve it's campaign

Bought it purely for VR and without doubt it was the best experiences I’ve had on VR to date. Yes it’s only three missions but I started on easy, finished all three in a breeze and repeated again all missions on medium then hard. It’s a great “pick up and play” game when you only have 20 minutes or so and I find it a great escape after work.

I’ve since played (well watched my 11 year old son) the “normal” game and I’m quite impressed with the gameplay, graphics and story of the game. My son was more adept when using the ‘normal’ control setup whereas I found ‘expert’ gave me more control in turns. He also needed help understanding what the HUD display meant and was a little confused how the targeting system worked. Not sure if there was a tutorial he skipped out- which knowing the impatient little fella, is a probability but he was able work out most of the game with little help from me and I guess he thought it was a good game as he wasn’t too keen on letting me have a go.

I’ve not given it 10/10 as the gameplay is kinda short in VR but I understand that was a (very appreciated) add on to the main game, which as I said looks and plays pretty cool too.

If you’ve got PSVR and ever wandered what it’d be like to fly a jet (let alone have a dog fight in one) and if like me you have always had a keen interest in fighter jets then you’ll be blown away, this is undoubtedly a remarkable experience that you’ll tell everyone about, unfortunately they’ll not truly know what you’re talking about- until they experience it themselves.

The game is absolutely gorgeous. Even on my day 1 PS4, the textures and the frame rate are incredible. Out maneuvering an opponent to obliteration, is just as satisfying as in previous iterations.

Unfortunately, the story is forgettable, and it would have been nice to see more missions. Additional single player missions will be released with the DLC, which is nice. AC7 NEEDS co-op

UPDATE 2/13/19: My friend and I tried the VR missions recently. He absolutely loved it. He is a big VR gamer, and found controlling the planes in VR to be easier than in normal play. He played the first two missions back to back with no issues. I also found the VR experience to be very well done. However, I was getting motion sick maybe 10 minutes into the level. The VR missions are separate from the main campaign, and you will not be able to use your planes from the campaign in VR. Give it a try, its worth it even if you start feeling vertigo.

Expand

The story is a bit weaksauce though. I failed to really feel love and care for my squadron and other game personalities, and the boss fights are basically nonexistent. AC always used to hit you with a superweapon every now and then, Stonehenge, the Arkbird, the Siphaxi, Excalibur, etc. These fights felt huge in scale and made you feel even more of a flying legend once they were over, and you also had to fight elite squadrons that boosted your reputation. Here you just stomp enemy soldiers really often... and these epic encounters are minimal. Don't get me wrong, it's good, it's just not Project Ace's top-tier game. Still, it's a great welcoming for the franchise into the newer generation of gaming and it's a great start for anybody that hasn't played them before. Expand

The story is good, and like AC0 or 5, there is a main narrative character, different from the one you play who is very mysterious, you don't see him and don't hear him talk. You now have a "tree" with planes and various upgrades to unlock with the virtual money of the game. The multiplayer has only 2 modes, but it's working very fine. Last but not least, the soundtrack is, once again, a masterpiece full of epic tracks.

Project Aces has done a great game, Ace Combat 7 is highly recommended, fans of the franchise will not be disappointed.

AC7 is the return to form the series needed, and it's an amazing time tearing up the skies against swarms of enemies that just don't stand a chance to your skills as the best ace around. Though the story isn't as deep and compelling as past entries, definitely being behind 5 and Zero, it's still definitely Ace Combat through and through, and it's that Ace Combat charm that makes it so endearing, even if it's somewhat all over the place and hard to follow.

Oh, yeah, and they threw in multiplayer, too, I guess... eugh...

I'm still waiting for the competitive co-op from Infinity to be inevitably added because as it is now, it's very much possible to score literally 0 in multiplayer since it just consists of spinning around forever trying to get a shot off before being sniped by a railgun, which is the meta people picked up the millisecond the game released. It's not fun at all as it is, and it's really not worth investing your time into until they add in game modes where it's actually possible to progress.

Lucky for me, the multiplayer can be totally ignored as all the planes can be unlocked by single player and everything that you can only get in multiplayer can only be used IN multiplayer, so they don't hamper the single player experience at all, which means that I can pretend it doesn't exist until it actually gets interesting and fun to play.

First of all, Ace Combat is a combination of Fun Arcade Game and Simulation Game that perfectly combined that will make you feel like Top Gun Pilot without make you stress of choosing which button to select.

Campaign : Pretty meaty, you can spent 25 hours at least for a single run. The are pretty good variations for the missions from dogfight, escort, defensive operation, infiltration , flying through canyon, boss/superweapons fight. The missions are superbly designed, the tree tech is pretty interesting to invest, and make you think for the best strategy to complete the missions. Should you focus on plane durability , payload or manouverability is up to you.

Gameplay : Control is fluid and enjoyable. choose for expert control altough it is your first try as it give your full total control for your plane. You can learn to try some neat tricks like Pugachev Cobra on this , altough you must be careful as you are very vulnerable while doing that. Also you can customize your plane with special paint job, emblem, parts that enhance your plane. Hope Ace Combat can add free colour customization like in Ace Combat Assault Horrizon.

Story : Pretty Good, altough not as strong as Ace Combat Holy PS2 Trilogy. The game will tell you about a war from both side of belligerents. You fly as a mute protagonist named Trigger. You start as a common pilot but with the progress of story , your great work will be praised and you will be feel great for your achievements.

Graphics : The Graphics Is very beautiful while also very detailed for a game that must render a very wide area at one time. You gonna love it when you fly through the canyon while there are storm and lightning ready to mess your hud in mission 7.

Multiplayer : pretty good, there are deathmatch of 4 vs 4 and one for all chaotic fight. Hope Project Aces can add many variatons for the multiplayer like coop score based competion in a grand campaign, or Capital Conquest of Ace Combat Assault Horrizon, Tunnek Race of Ace Combat Zero, or Superweapon fight.

VR : Very Immersive, be careful of motion sickness. The VR portion have different campaign from the Main Campaign. It also have free flight and Air Show mode that are beautiful.

Music : Oh God the music is very beautiful and epic. Im strongly urge you to try listen Liberation of Gracemeria, Comona, Rex Tremendae+ Megalith from AC 4, Zero, Juggernaut, Mayhem from Ace Combat Zero, The Unsung War, Journey Home, Hrimfaxi, First Flight from Ace Combat if it is your first entry of Ace Combat Series.

You gonna think that this game just about shooting a box a very far away that you cannot see like in simulator game (DCS for example), but no, the fight is massive and epic close range dogfight that make you feel thrilled. You also gonna face countless drones, advanced Superweapons, and enemy Aces Squadrons. The battle is massive.

The Story is set on fictional world of Strangereal. You are pilot of Osea Federation (Equivalent of Murica Fck Yeah) against Kingdom of Erusea ( European Nation combined). In this world, the technology is one step ahead of our world so dont be surprised when you see laser, or superweapon here.

Ace Combat 7 also let you express your creativity with ton of customizations. You can select a special paint job that based of many real life great livery of famous World Air Forces. You can also choose emblem in your lovely plane. Also from the tech tree, you can choose many upgradeable parts , and choose it according to your strategies. you cann opt to durable plane, or heavy weapon plane, or quick and swift plane.

The control is fun and nice , select for Expert control as it the best way for you to control the plane. It may be hard if you new for this, but with adapt gameplay and control, you gonna be Aces in no time. Hey also you can pull Pugachev Cobra and Kublit on some of the planes.

The Graphics is very great. The clouds is a real things as it has it own volume. You can use the cloud as part of you strategies. while you in clouds you can outmanouver your enemies and minimalize their lock on capabilities.

The Enemies A.I is very clever. They will use the clouds to hide from you sneak behind you, flying through the canyon while hoping you gonna crash, the drones also wil sacrifice itself to protect the superweapons. The Allies A.I is pretty agressive and sometime steal your kill, but will not steal the show for you (although I hope the Allies A.I can be more competent at least for the elite squad).

Ace Combat is famous for their epic music. just listen for Zero-Ace Combat Ost, Liberation of Gracemeria, First Flight AC5 ,Comona on youtube and you gonna be immersed by it. The music in this game is also beautiful.

VR Portion is one of the things on VR Games especially for a flight game. It will live up your dreams as Fighter of Top Gun Pilot. you also can watch an epic airshow and fly in beautiful world of Strangereal.

The Multiplayer is pretty neat and chaotic. for now it just 4 vs 4 deathmatch and one for all brawl. Hope they add more contents for the MP.

As a 90's combat flight simulator veteran, and as someone who knows how real military missions work, I am disappointed with this one.

The story and 20 missions basically promote jet fighters and air power, while ignoring just about everything else that goes into conflicts. The story doesn't even try to hide this. It outright tells you that your jet fighters are the only way to win battles.

The story isn't very good. It has a few meaningful scenes here and there, but they're strung together by nonsense. It's also mostly told from your opponents' side, and not your own, which makes things slightly confusing. About half way though, I got tired of the nonsense and started skipping story scenes.

If you're familiar with military operations, you'll probably find the missions here to be silly at best. Instead of focusing on what you need to do to complete missions, they go into an incredible amount of unnecessary backstory. I eventually started skipping the mission briefings, just to get to the the one-sentence objective at the end, such as "destroy all targets" or "get enough points within the time limit." Yeah, points. They didn't even try to disguise this as something more realistic, such as "Kill X forces within Y time before Z happens."

And I must point out the dumbest part of the story/missions. At one point, you're convicted of a crime, so you're sent to a penal colony with other pilots. And what do you do to atone for your crimes? Fly missions for them. Yep, they give multi-million dollar planes to criminals to fly and expect them to do their missions. How absurd!

As for the gameplay, it's obvious that the game was made to be cool and not accurate. The planes simply don't handle like real planes. You also get unlimited bullets, rockets, and fuel. An interesting thing to note is that your enemies also have unlimited missiles, but you have less than 10 countermeasure flares/chaff. Well, since they work 100% of the time, I suppose they had to create a limit.

Your radar and HUD have serious flaws. There's no radar depth indicator, so you have to rely on a big green arrow in the middle of the screen that tells you where your target is. Worried about the other 10 planes trying to take you down? Well, too bad, you only get depth data on one target. As for the HUD, if you're pointed at a light background, such as the daylight sky, it's simply unreadable.

To add difficulty, enemy planes are simply unrealistic (even more than your plane). Late in the game, you'll frequently encounter planes and drones that seemingly reverse direction instantly. They'll also take upwards of six missile hits to take down. Well I suppose that makes sense since it takes at least three to take your plane down.

During my first mission, I was disappointed that I didn't get to take off or land. You're just automatically in the air. Later on, you get to do optional take off, landing, and in-flight refueling sequences. And they're bad from a flight sim standpoint. Taking off consists of holding down the accelerator button until the game decides to take you off the ground and pull up your landing gear. Landing consists of following the landing lines and hitting the runway nose-gear-first below a certain speed or you'll instantly explode. These sections were so unrealistic and no fun that I just skipped them later. This is a shame since taking off and landing are some of the best parts of realistic flight simulators.

Bombing is a joke in this game. Actually, bombs don't really exist. Everything is missile-based and you're expected to fly directly at ground targets to get a lock-on before you can release your "bombs," which are just guided missiles that can't target air targets. This is a pain in missions with lots of ground targets. You'll be flying at the ground, trying to get your target and release your bombs before hitting the ground. Do that 30 more times without crashing to complete the mission.

The plane models are pretty good, but there's not a lot and they're mainly focused on modern jet fighters. By going through the story missions, I was able to purchase more than half of the planes, all the way up to the top-of-the line F-35. After you complete the game, you also get the opportunity to purchase a sci-fi plane. The only way to earn more money to purchase all planes is to replay the same story missions. I was hoping for some post-game standard missions, without all of the nonsensical story baggage, but that unfortunately isn't here.

The game would have worked better with a sci-fi setting. With real planes and the attempt at a real military story, all of the silliness just doesn't fit. Though if you have no idea how militaries work, how planes actually fly, or how many missiles a jet fighter can actually carry, then you'll probably be fine with it. Just don't go in expecting a realistic story or flight simulator, or you'll be disappointed.

I am so pleased to have brought AC7 on release.... I jumped straight into the VR mode which was short lived but fulfilling (1 and 1/2 hrs for me). The main campaign however, has the feeling of being diluted to become a large collection of average missions (with some great moments in there though). Despite its shortcomings, it's just so refreshing to see the genre in the spotlight once again. I remain hopeful there can be a patch to update the visuals for ps4 pro/xbone x to further improve the resolution and maybe implement HDR.

Overall I feel the price is a bit high for the content on offer, and maybe in the future if Bandai namco games scaled bakc the scope of the game (to like 5 SOLID exceptional quality missions), AAA tightened the screws on the content polished the hell out of it and made it all VR compatible this could've been truly EXCEPTIONAL. Instead you get an average 20-30 missions throwback title with variable quality across each mission. Missed opportunity but very fun!

The idea with a timer is totally horrible.

And whats up with all these braindead wingmen that never ever give you a real hand. Just talk trash!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve only previously played AC 5 and Zero on the PS2.

AC 7 makes a fresh start on current gen flight combat. In terms to flight controls and gameplay they didn’t change much from previous games which isn’t a bad thing because it was good to begin with. One thing that disappointed me was that they removed wingmen commands which they had previously on AC 5. The wingmen AI is horrendous and is a lot worse when you have no control over it. You end up having to do everything yourself. There was one mission where you had to escort a transport with a single wingman while taking out SAMs bombarding the transport in every fkn direction while also tracking back and taking out any bandits intercepting said transport. They put too much emphasis on you the player taking total control of the battle by shooting down 50 + enemies while the wingmen are there just for fodder which really ruins immersion and realism.

Also another thing they removed was wingmen assignment. In AC 5, for missions that require elimination of Air and Ground targets you can assign your wingmen to different planes that have different roles (fighter/multi role/ground assault). In AC 7 it’s just you who can choose and end up having to use an A10 to have enough firepower to take out 100 + ground targets then have to contend to fighting Mig 29s and some OP boss with a modified SU 33 (my poor A10 got lucky on the 5th go of that mission).

Typical AC series is the graphics and sound are all excellent. All planes have great detail and the payload is accurate apart from Railguns and lasers (wish they brought back the Napalm bomb for the F4s. The music nostalgic especially during the multiplayer where they brought some classics back and remixed a bit.

The Campaign is a bit all over the place looking at both sides of the war. Wingmen didn't really gel and I didn't really care if they died compared to Nagase, Archer and Chopper (Team Razgriz!). It didn’t really engage me but I’m just playing this to shoot planes and blow **** up anyways.

Multiplayer is pretty meh and time consuming as they’re player lobbies and no quick match options. All you get is Free for All and team Death Match which you’re only gonna use Air superiority planes like the F15 Eagles and F35s because you’ll get totally wrecked using Assault and Multi Role planes. They should have siege modes where one defends and the other have to destroy a target like the Ark bird or Stonehenge but this could be added in future.
Overall, the game play is non stop action and excitement…and somewhat annoying as you’re a one man team against 100. Air plane fans will love it, I’ll give it a 6 but since they threw in my AC 5 in my preorder I’ll push it to a 7.

However, AC7 makes some of the same mistakes as AC6, and it's really disappointing in that way. Ace Combat 7 makes the mistake that more is better and shoves tons of enemies on every map. Just get used to the missile alert sound constantly ringing in the background, because Namco Bandai loaded the map with tons of missile-bearing enemies and concentrated them in small areas. This simply wasn't the case in Ace Combat 04, 5, and Zero, where you actually had some time to breathe. A missile alert in those games actually brought a sense of tension. Now, it's constant. Maybe the developers back then realized that constant missile threat doesn't enhance gameplay, or hardware/engine constraints limited the amount of targets on a map. Either way, it's a quality of the old games that has been lost in the new.

This game doesn't evoke the thrill that AC:Zero's B7R levels do, or the tension that AC5's Arkbird missions have. Instead, you're annoyed. You're annoyed that your missile alarm is constantly going off. You're annoyed that your incompetent squadmembers don't do anything. You're annoyed that you can't take a second to appreciate the beautiful scenery the artists constructed or listen to the wonderful soundtrack by Ace Combat staple Keiki Kobayashi. I understand that in real dogfighting you can't take your focus away for even a second. But Ace Combat has never gone for absolute realism. Instead, it seeks to capture the wonder and thrill of flying without some of its real-world impediments. Fortunately, the PS4 version I got came with a copy of Ace Combat 5, which I will likely end up playing more than AC7.

The biggest problem is the multiplayer which doesn't have a dedicated server and is not played by anyone. In addition, I couldn't join a single lobby due to constant connection problems with the host.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In terms of story, mission variety and overall finesse, this is no Japanese version Ace Combat 3. Not even close.

Now that that's out of the way, AC7 is a fantastic game and a must-buy if you're a fan of this franchise. It plays exactly like its numbered (i.e. non-offshoot) predecessors. Graphics are mostly great, and the soundtrack really takes me back to the older Ace games.

I would've liked to see a larger variety and greater number of missions, though. Most are to do with achieving an objective before the timer runs out. And all, except for mission #6 titled "Long Day", pose little challenge – even on Ace difficulty, which unlocks after finishing the campaign on Hard.

There is no 'edge-of-space' mission like in AC3, yet many other mainstays of this franchise continue on with AC7. These include the aforementioned 'timed-for-no-reason' missions, as well as the 'flying through canyons because you can't fly above them' missions, a 'flying through tunnels which fork and have closing gates' mission, massive boomerang-shaped boss aircraft, super-fast prototype boss aircraft that evade most missiles and physics laws, and drones upon drones. Even the slow, nonsensical, overdramatic cutscenes return here. I absolutely love that nothing really has changed. This is an Ace game through 'n through!

If I had one complaint, it would be the cheesy chit-chat that takes place in every mission from start to finish. It's not annoying, but it is unnecessary.

Side note: If you're into electronica and haven't already heard the AC3 OST, do yourself a favour. In terms of videogame soundtracks, it's on par with Quake II – and waaaay ahead of its time.

My PS2 is shoddy at best these days and the game looks bad on a 4k TV when using the PS2.

Now, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown... I wanted to love this game, I really did. Not that I'm saying it’s bad. There are significant nods to the older games. Which is really nice. They learned their lesson of ACAH. It takes the building aspect of PS3’s Infinity... Something as simple but always appreciated… the replays and ribbon playback from AC5 and more.

However, there were some points that you can certainly harp on, and I’m not sure as to why they did it. I mean, sure some could argue its “challenging”. But I just find it irritating and annoying.

    Cons:
    - Flight Stick - There is no option to change the button layout. It literally makes no sense how it is. This results in a terrible experience when using it. You pretty much prefer the regular controller.

    - Flight Stick - the ability to adjust the sensitivity would be be good. It’s way too loose.

    - Non-combat missions - Now I know, there are these as well in the other versions, but it really feels like there are way more in this. Needlessly so. I mean, how many times do you need to escort, fly through radar grids, or a canyon with spot lights? C’mon… this is where it could have been replaced with Squadrons. Remember those? Sure you get one in this game, but if you remember in Zero, there were loads. Dogfighting is what we tend to want to do in this game. NOT fly a maze.

    - Plane upgrades - It’s annoying that the gear you work for to buy in the campaign, isn’t good for the online. No, you want to buy the other gear, that you can’t use in the campaign. Okay, this isn’t THAT bad, but Grinding the campaign to buy the gear to find out it’s really useless in the online arena kind of bugs me.

    - Campaign Wingmen - It’s not like you have interactive conversations in battle like in AC5. You don’t develop that bond with your wingman/men like in previous.

    - Commands - You don’t get to command your crew. They do whatever and it seems like you’re more or less on a solo mission every time.

    - Missions where you have to ID - Okay, this wouldn’t be as bad if you didn’t have to wait SO long for a damned target to be ID’d if it’s an enemy or not. Meanwhile they are shooting at you and you’re chastised if you shoot back without IDing them. Hell, there’s one mission that it’s not even clear who you are to attack as you can attack anyone, and you fail the mission for shooting the wrong guys, that you really think you should be killing.

-Targeting. Okay, this one really pisses me off. Somebody dropped the ball big time on this one. Switching targets cycles through the enemies that are ahead of you on the radar, even if they don’t show on your screen. So when you zero in on a target and hit the button to switch targets to them, you have to hit it multiple times because it’s cycling through all other illogical choices first. HUH?!?! Doesn’t it make sense that you would cycle to the target closest to your reticule, then outward? May just be me on this one, but I’m thinking I’m not alone.

Online - They haven’t optimized or really changed the lobby and matching from Infinity. You still get long waits to find and join a match, then for everyone to select that they are ready. I swear, you spend more time waiting to play than you actually do.

    Pros:
    - The game looks great and plays smooth

    - New details like wind force and clouds that ice up your wings, is an extremely nice touch. Adds a whole new dynamic to fighting. Wind that can blow you in to mountains, really makes you keep track of where you are in a dogfight. You’ll see what I’m talking about.

    - Not really much new in terms of planes vs Infinity.

    - No crazy skin jobs that were in Infinity. Yes, there are some skins and some are, again, nice nods to games past… but none of those over the top skins that look like they should be on a desktop, rather than a plane.

    - Flares! Okay, I can’t remember if Infinity had them or not to be honest. In the event it didn’t… FINALLY! If it did... well… Yay! They kept them? ;)

    - High G turns Now this is a nice addition. It’s not that BS maneuver that ACAH had, but it’s a very small detail that makes a big difference.

    - Story - It’s not the best one to date, but it’s still okay… though you kind of wish you could shoot some of the people you are helping.

Overall, I know I didn’t put many “Pros”, but I still recommend this game if you’re a fan. It’s what we were expecting Infinity to be. I would have rated this a 7, but AC5 gave +1.

Sometimes I think about what is ace combat games are and maybe it is all about the tracklist and this has some of the best tracks and some other best levels the aren't really too many doll runs and it keeps it up all the way it's just really fun to play.

And the story is really good and well told I care about the characters and was really sad when some of them died i lose you full beard sadly,
But the weird thing about the story is there is a lot of dark points like using prisoners for war with when they don't wanna fight and killing civilians and killing people who don't deserve it. It's just some of feels kind of icky.

Yeah it is simple arcade combat, but I like the accessibility for sure say compared to ArmA games dreaded aircraft controls/handling. AC7 is say the very opposite of the hardcore sim like IL-2 Sturmovik.

VR section not really impressed beyond take off and landing really. The ariel combat is kind of very underwhelming looking in VR for sure. After trying several different VR games the motion sickness has finally gone. Still with all that plastic and rubber on the head? Head overheat happens pretty quicky. Yeah even when using a massive floor fan to try and counter it. Maybe I need to use PS/VR in the winter or something?

The first is that the semi-famous "Ace Combat style" of storytelling falls completely flat here, making all the story segments and dialogue an annoyance at best and insufferable at worst. The second is that the PS4 just is not able to render coherent models and this is hampered further by a clunky user interface that offers only one option: on or off.

The story uses the AC tradition of converging perspectives, but they are so badly written here that the overall plot becomes uninteresting early on. Luckily, all the cutscenes and briefing segments can be skipped. Unfortunately, the on-mission chatter, which sets a new low standard for the series, cannot be muted and must be heard in its entirety. It's so bad that the player feels like a hostage to cringe, and unless you're a natural ace pilot you'll hear many missions' worth several times.

The lack of visual clarity in the game, at least in this version, is a serious detriment. Dogfighting is incredibly frustrating when you are simply not able to get a read on a plane's direction or bearing. Just as deflating is firing on ground targets only to realize there was actually a geographical feature that wasn't clear from the angle you approached. An equal offender here is the awful UI in general and heads-up display in particular, which feel lifted from a PS1 game for all their helpfulness and sense.

Overall a bit disappointing although the package DOES manage to come together by the end, but the slog will likely scare all but the most committed, patient, and weeb-friendly pilots out there. Here's hoping AC8 is a serious step forward instead of a largely "safe" entry.

I was really looking forward to AC7 and when I saw it reduced to £11 on Amazon I got it immediately. However I'm left feeling a bit disappointed by the overall experience.

The graphics in this game are almost irrelevant. You're flying so fast a lot of the time that all you're seeing is sky, sea and ground. Unfortunately the ground seems to fare the worst graphically. Buildings and units don't look too great up close, and the more restricted environments are a pain to traverse as you can easily smash into barely noticeable objects and lose a lot of progress. Enthusiasts of combat jets may get a thrill here, but most of the airplanes looked the same to me and enemies are usually too far away to be appreciated visually. The weather is impressive visually but comes with the caveat of frustrating the gameplay.

The gameplay is the bread and butter of AC7. I actually haven't played any other games in the series, however my experience makes me reluctant to do so. What I really enjoyed was the dogfighting - when you get to face head-to-head with other fighters and blow them out of the sky the game is at it's zenith. The problem is this is far too often compounded by mundane and frustrating mission objectives and mechanics. Far too often I was failing missions due to not being aware of 'hidden' objectives such as protecting a unit, using stealth (who the hell wants to go slow in an F15?!) or by having time limits. Add to this the insane abilities of some enemies to manoeuvre their aircraft in unnatural ways (which of course you cannot do) and aspects such as vague mission objectives that don't help you decide what weapons you need to take with you into the mission (it's a game, not a flight sim, so there should be a variety of them at all times anyway), and you've got a very frustrating experience. A final thing worth mentioning is that in later missions you have to hover your crosshair over enemies to identify them before shooting, which REALLY became tedious for me.

The story is barely coherent, silly and nonsensical, so don't come to this game for that, although I imagine most of us are here for dogfighting and not soap operas anyway. I stopped paying heed to it very quickly as it was just delaying gameplay and didn't have enough direct applications to the game itself.

Overall, the game can be very enjoyable and despite my misgivings I kept coming back to it as the enjoyable elements were excellent. However had I known how difficult and unbalanced it was going to be I never would have played it in the first place. A challenge is one thing, but AC7 far too often takes control out of my hands and fails my missions for me. If you can tolerate the Dark Souls approach of many deaths and retries, this game is for you. Otherwise, get your flying kicks elsewhere.

I was thoroughly enjoying Ace Combat: Assault Horizon back in 2011. The story was interesting, and the theme felt gritty. Unlike previous entries, that game took place in our present time/world. The gameplay was excellent, and so was the story of the game.

Unfortunately the writers of Skies Unknown are clearly six years old, as the story of Skies Unknown is incredibly juvenile, and is little more than an anime fetish. Soldiers think they are starring in Top Gun or something, and the narration is beyond dumb. The military strategies are unrealistic, and the briefing maps are so confusing that i was lossed as to what was going on. There are weather effects that don't enhance the experience, but rather annoy the player. Just because it's more realistic, doesn't mean it makes the game better. The cinematics in this game are very basic and pretty much pointless. It comes down to slides and some slow cutscenes with voice-overs. I wonder why the development of this game took so long when you consider that Assault Horizon had well produced cinematics, yet this game seems to do the bare minimum. On top of that some levels are cringe worthy, as unrealistic scenarios are forced upon you like flying up the inside of a space elevator... IN A FIGHTER JET? WHAT THE **** It is not an exercise in skill, but just a matter of seizure inducing roadblocks. The Tech tree in this game is underwhelming. There are only three types of aircraft: Fighters, Multirole and Assault (although also only barely as there are only 2 Assault Aircrafts). There are only a few dozen different ones, whereas Assault Horizon had astonishingly many, and even had Helicopters.

Unlocking these happens through points, though the payout never seems to be enough to unlock a new aircraft at a steady pace. This becomes very annoying when you get a mission with ground- or naval targets, but can't unlock the aircraft with the proper missiles because you don't have nearly enough points yet. And then... You have to grind. Who thought that was a good idea? I guess Ace Combat: Infinity in 2013 was just a test to see if people where willing to do that.

Dogfighting is no longer a minigame, but the new way with more freedom in this game feels pretty good too. The G-turns are quick, easy and helps switching between targets.

Different types of aircraft mean nothing in Skies Unknown. Multirole aircrafts, which are supposed to do a combination a Dogfighting and air-to-ground attacks, usually don't even have dedicated air-to-ground missiles. In fact, it's usually better to use a fighter aircraft as these seem to be just a effective with better air-to-air weapons in reserve. Only later on in the tech tree, when you get the A-10 Thunderbird or the F35, you will have an aircraft that fights according to its type.

I don't know what happened after Assault Horizon, but this game feels like 3 steps back in every department except for graphics. The story is dumb, the characters are dumb, the aircraft tree is lazy and barren, and all the good additions that were made in Assault Horizon are suddenly gone.

It is entertaining, but it makes me roll my eyes just a bit too often. The final level is so dumb that it takes the quality of the game way down! It's a dumb game. I give it a 5/10

Missions are samey, last too long and if you die near the end of a long boring mission guess what - yep, start again - what is this the 90s?

Constant missile alerts - irritating and not fun at all. Felt like a chore to play so sold it.

Had to skip all the cut scenes. Seems this story was written and directed by 15 year olds. 20 missions. the rest are on dlc.

Whole levels of the game is copy-past from previous games, storyline is ridiculous

This game is an incredible return to form for ace combat games. Terrific visuals with incredibly modeled, detailed aircraft, and some of the best music, if not the best OST of 2019. It would have been nice to have more missions on release, but after the DLC my thirst for more has been satiated. Multiplayer modes could have also been expanded, but they hold up all the same, as fun, short experiences that are just genuinely enjoyable. Expand

The campaign of game is great especially graphics and music are top notch. Although there are not many enemy aces/ace squadrons and multiplayer lacked co-op mode. It would also be great to see more aircrafts but so far, the game delivered what was expected from it.

Been with the series since I was old enough to hold a controller. The game is excellent, addictive and beautiful just like it's PS2 era games. However the story does not move me like what Unsung War and Zero did for me all those years ago which leads to it not receiving a perfect score from me.

Expand

This game has a serious game design problem with the lock on system and some missions been time based, with a horrible checkpoint, even on normal difficult level seems ridiculous difficult due the repetition, it looks like those missions were poorly put together. The graphics are quite nice and the VR system is really cool, I stopped playing because I was bored and frustrated.

I can see why so many people love this game but my god it has problems, not even touching on the story that just kind of happens around you without really making sense. I played the original back when I was a kid, and was looking forward to some arcade-y action. This game kept the PS1 control imprecision and terrible Godzilla forced perspective (is that aircraft carrier far away or is it twice the size of my plane and I'm about to smack into it?) while throwing exponentially more targets at you and tossing your plane around with a bunch of kart-racer level weather effects. There's gold here, and when you run a mission well you feel like a demigod, but it's all buried under layers of inexplicably bad design decisions and a control scheme that hasn't changed since analog sticks were introduced.

Easily the worst part of this game is the lock on feature. You have to manually cycle targets all using one button, and the computer has no preference between selecting a craft on your nose within weapons range or a lone antiair gun on the far horizon. The most effective antiair defence the enemy has is burying the targets you're actually trying to shoot at in other low-priority targets that you then have to mash triangle to try and select all while performing evasive maneuvers and such. There have been numerous times I've had perfect lines on targets then either didn't get around to targeting them in time or mashed past. There is no previous target button, and the d-pad is left unmapped. Even then, you can fiddle with the controls a bit but I found myself struggling to work all the controls effectively and keep a grip on my controller, and I have pretty big hands. This would be a non-issue with the ability to remap the controls better/use the right stick for something other than free look, but that's not a thing for some reason. Neither is it a thing to be able to use the plane's external camera and have an attitude indicator displayed, meaning that if you appreciate being able to see more than what feels like a sixty degree cone in front of your plane and you fly into a cloud/sandstorm/stormfront and lose visibility, you have to switch cameras to check your plane's orientation, which means pulling your thumb off the guns/targeting. You also launch flares with L3+R3, something I had to check online to figure out (I also learned about PSMs and the lock-on zoom here, because the game refuses to tell you about any of this stuff) which if you accidentally don't depress L3 down enough because you're constantly maneuvering, it just changes your camera.

So the controls are archaic and very poorly explained, which makes the crushed perspective a hundred times worse. The ground texture looks like low res aerial photographs. This alongside the miniaturized model enemies caused me to repeatedly plow into the ground thinking I had space to maneuver until the moment before I smash into it. It should also be noted that the jets don't really perform like jets. They have a normal (uncharacteristically slow and wide) turning radius, but you can feather the accelerator to initiate a """High-G turn""" which is basically just an air drift. This encourages a weird style of flight where you're constantly accelerating so you can pump the brakes and turn faster, instead of just slowing down and being able to consistently perform hard turns. While it simplifies piloting somewhat and reduces on having to learn maneuvers (which the game is completely unwilling to teach you), it also encourages you to fly sloppily and perform maneuvers that transition fantastically into slamming into the ground at speed. Clean flight doesn't really matter though as many levels have weather hazards that 1) only apply to your plane and 2) feel like kart racer obstacles added to make your life harder. There's "high winds" that instantly accelerate your plane sideways at three times its' maximum velocity, there's "thunderclouds" that sit between 100-1000 feet off the ground that arbitrarily stall you and turn your instruments off for a minute, there's clouds that work as free chaff for enemy planes. Hell, halfway through the game, your IFF gets turned off and you have to "manually identify" targets by keeping your camera on them for a few seconds within a kilometer. It's even more inconsistent than early game targeting with the added bonus of being able to mistakenly target every friendly troop as well as every other enemy besides the one you want.

There's never a point where the game leans back and lets you fly, it's just a bunch of gimmick missions, usually 15 minute "blow up every target" endurance or escort slogs. If you make one mistake, sorry, back to the beginning to listen to another 15 minutes of inane chatter. I wanted to like this game so bad, but they blew it, hard. It's like Doom if shooting was fun, but aiming was incredibly frustrating, inconsistent, and gave you carpal tunnel.

If you came to find a realistic air combat experience, you have came to the wrong place. But if you are here to feel like Maverick and be a badass, this game is for you. Story might not be you taste but who cares about the story if you can blow oil rigs and shoot down jets.

Some missions are very difficult. I hope that in the next game there will be a more interesting plot, there will be no fictional magic-super-ultra planes, there will be an opportunity to play on planes of the First and Second World War, and that the allies will REALLY help you in battle and not constantly hate you Expand

The almost nonsensical story and some poor mission design aside, you can have some fun with Ace Combat 7. It will take some patience to get through the sequences with poorly defined objectives, but you'll have fun with the action-packed aerial combat and enjoy testing your skills against other players in the multiplayer mode.

Ace Combat 7 revives the dying genre of arcade bullet hells and proves that even these games still have something to say. Players who get through system reports and time limits will be rewarded with an adrenaline ride with endless fun. [Issue#293]
