This review could have been one simple word....
    AWFUL.
But since they require more.. I'll just say it again.

    AWFUL.
    Laggy garbage.

2021 review: decided to retry it. Still is laggy garbage but now with percentage based micro transactions tacked as well as op dlc characters. Whoever decided that was ok totally killed their game.

You can either play 1v1 which is you and 2 ai vs 1 other player and 2 ai or 3 v 3 which is 3 human players vs 3 other human players…
The game also supports couch co-op for up to 3 players…
This or playing with an online crew is easily the best way to play this game...
As going in solo and playing with random players just isn’t fun…
Even if you play 1v1 you don’t get to jump between your 3 characters...
you have to rely on the ai to not lose to ball or be able to make a shot…
And in 3v3 which is easily the better mode..
The game feels very ball hoggy, where strategy is out the window... everyone is just trying to make as many points as possible...
The gameplay here is very stiff…
from moving, to steeling… to blocking and shooting…
like any other half court game if you rebound a shot of the opponent you have to take the ball beyond the 3 point line to be able to shoot again…
And at the end of a match an mvp is awarded and you’re given your xp and credits…
    Xp for you that is…
    Not for your character…
This is where the free to play nonsense comes into play…
There are 17 characters to unlock here that take a ridiculous amount of credits to purchase
about 2 and a half hours’ worth of playing per character..
And some of them are locked behind a premium pay wall as is the customizable items like jerseys... you can’t just earn these items or characters...
And as you would expect... these premium characters have the best solids stats…
But what about the regular characters?
Thankfully you can grind to level up your characters, boost their stats and attributes….
Just not by actually playing the game and using that character because that would be ridiculous…
No... You need an xp drink. .that you buy with your credits or you get from putting your characters to work…
And after 24 real time hours they come back with some goods...
You can also boost attributes with training day cards that you get from buying albums with coins…
A lot of coin spending here…which is fine because you get them from finishing matches...
What isn’t fine is how little you get from matches compared to prices… and of course you can just straight up buy coins with real life money…
can you tell where I’m going with this?
Characters with attributes that you can level up....buuuut they only level up with items you have to buy or wait a day for... not by actually using them
    seems a little shady.. .
    And that’s because it is…
This is a pay to win game
which means tons if unbalanced matches with characters that hardly miss and never want to share the ball…
I can see how this game can be fun for a while with 3 close friends…
but structurally this is a broken game fueled by greed...
    I give 3 on 3 freestyle
    a 4.5/10

Enjoy with friends !! It is the best of free sports games. Your friends will surely like it. Feel the joy of winning with a great co-op play! But if you lose, it gets really annoying. That's the charm of this game. It is recommended to play as a team rather than alone. If you have a chance to play, do it once.

Playing this game in 2018 is like enjoying fine wine.
Over the year of updates, all the rough edges are well polished and now playing on Xbox one works like a charm.
Before I can only recommend it for party time with friends but now with club system added, ranking up the ladder with community is fun in its own. It has great concept in casual sports gaming. Fast and easy to jump in

Fast and easy to jump in but deep in team strategy is what required for online esports title.
I only wish they had all this systems right at the PS4 launch. Back then we had many players.
Now it is launched on XB and people are jumping in, I can recommend to everyone likes B-ball or team work game to try it. It is free so no risk.

Let me preface this by saying that I never played the previous "Freestyle" games. I just never really got into them so this is a perspective from someone new to the series. I just never really got into them so this is a perspective from someone new to the series. I find the game addictive. As a fan of basketball, I was intrigued by this free-to-play game that I randomly found on the PS store. I played the earlier version of the game which I would have given a 5 or even a 4 but I will review the game it in its current 2018 state.

Let me break my review down point by point. First, the gameplay. This may not start off as the most intricate experience as the controls for each character are shallow but the various skills and special moves for each character require more button combinations and ultimately, make the core of the game deeper than I initially thought. Each character has a respective position (Point Guard, Shooting Guard, Small Forward, Power Forward, Center) and each has his/her own unique set of attributes and skills. For example, Luther (my favorite) is a powerhouse Center that focuses on offense by being an unstoppable force in the paint; in contrast, you'll have someone like Big Dog who is also a Center but has passing abilities that make him more of a playmaker rather than an actual scorer. Each character feels different (apart from maybe Clarke and Luther, they just both play very similarly) and any player can find a character that suits their style of play then level up that character to raise their attributes and acquire new skills. In my opinion, though, try to be proficient with 2-3 different characters each in different positions. Be warned, though. This game is a ton more fun when played online and your experience can vary depending on each match. In one game, your team will dominate by playing smart basketball but in the very next game, you could be partnered up by idiot ballhogs who ruin the experience. Try to find friends to play with or join a crew that won't tolerate that ****

The next point is presentation and lore. This game is colorful and full of life. The Unreal Engine continues to impress even with a game leans more on a cartoonish look rather than realism. The characters have different clothes that set them apart and the game even takes an extra step by giving each character his/her own background story. Did they really need to? Does it affect the gameplay ? Absolutely not but I like the extra effort and the voice acting for each character is appropriately cheesy (though it can get annoying when other players spam the chat button and you have to hear the same sentence over and over again). The music in the game is catchy even though none of the songs really stand out. They're just there to provide upbeat distractions. The menus are easy to navigate; however, it's in the menus where the game tended to crash, for me at least. I would have been ok with that but seeing as how this game has been out for nearly 2 years, that needs to stop.

My biggest gripe with the game is the grindy nature of it. and this is where I docked off a few points. Games like these are grindy but to me, it's all about if it feels like it and the game definitely FELT like a real grind at times. I was able to max out one character through sheer hard work alone but there are people out there who have probably maxed out everybody just because they paid for experience points. The game does feel like micro-transactions are everywhere. From cosmetics to skills, the game reminds you how incredibly limited you are if you don't pay up. Some characters can only be bought with real-life currency which is egregious.

If you're a good enough player, though, with a good enough team, you can still beat guys who buy their way to leveling up but if you play against a top tier player/team who also buy skills, you're screwed.

Overall, I think this is a game worth trying. In its best moments, the game is an exciting, fast-paced thrill ride that demands you to play basketball properly. When you're in a good team going up a team with similar skill level, that's where it truly shines. At its worst, it's grindy nature may turn people after a few hours. Nevertheless, for people who enjoy playing over-the-top streetball, this is worth checking out.

The game is just bad compared to more advanced basketball games. The controls are mediocre at best, and it takes forever to find a match online. If you want to play basketball do yourself a favor and buy NBA2K

It had the potential to be good but unfortunately it is littered with gacha monetization practices that are specifically designed to waste both your time and money . It had the potential to be good but unfortunately it is littered with gacha monetization practices that are specifically designed to waste both your time and money . Progression is laughably slow as the bare minimum which is to get a character to P5 for free requires 84 log ins to raise the 3 intensive manuals that are required

I say the bare minimum because if you pay/grind enough base stats and individual character strengths and weaknesses don't matter as you can take a center and twist him into becoming a 3pt machine (Among other things) via a combination of P-Buffs and gold/platinum cards

P-Buffs are buffs that one character can transfer over to everyone else of the same position and if you have 4 characters at P5 you can equip up till 8 . This a manipulative scheme in order to coerce you into buying and grinding characters you don't care for to make your mains RNG chances less random (More on this later)

Cards can provide various buffs that get stronger and stronger the higher the rarity of the card is . After opening hundreds of free gold packs 98% of the time I received garbage or silver cards so if you ain't opening the stupid expensive platinum ones you ain't doing jack . Another thing worth mentioning is that the developers do not allow you to trade cards between characters because of course they don't

How all of this translates to gameplay is as follows

The basic premise is that you have to make fast and accurate characters so that A) You make or close space as fast physically possible and B) Their defense de-buff gets de-buffed by your shot success RNG . As bad as this sound it wouldn't have been THAT bad if it wasn't for freestyles which are arguably the worst and most gamebreaking thing in this game aside from the poor netcode (Again more on this later)

Freestyles essentially change the normal and character unique shooting , lay up and dunk animations to ones that are faster and offer defense resistence so if you put 0,3% effort and you have a lot of these (Insane grinding/pay requirement) they're pretty much gifted points

Damn near every character has the potential to be strong and/or annoying if you open up that wallet but some more than others . More specifically some DLC characters when appropriately buffed have ZERO flaws or weaknesses

All of this exists so that at the very least you'll be manipulated into buying the 80$ ultimate edition which unlocks all characters and future super grindy battle passes that unlike other games aren't just cosmetics but full of "time savers" . From there you better log in every day and grind the FOMO events like a second job if you wish to stand even a slight chance

Now on to the netcode/servers and good god is it bad . If you have an insanely good ping you gain a MASSIVE frame advantage and if you lag just the right amount you can get "wide open" prompts on your shot even if the defender is an ants distance away from your face and honestly I don't know what's worse (You'll see many abusing this by doing things such as changing regions or suspiciously calling for time-outs to subtly lag switch )

It's also worth noting that if the match/servers are laggy then I've noticed that your shot success will be butchered as you can and will miss basic open 2pt shots despite having characters and builds specifically build around that (One exception being if you have 100+ ssr which you won't for free)

The measly player base itself mostly consists of narcissistic "exploit" abusing meta slaves that actually have gaslighted themselves into believing that what they're doing requires skill . After level 10 you'll be fed to whales that have a billion hours worth of grinding and an obscene amount of money spend on this one game . A blacklist system could help but the developers know that whales would abuse it and everyone else would block the whales from ever finding a match

There's a LOT of other things I could mention such as the quid pro quo ranked , The numerous bugs , Skill balls multiplying in price the more you buy in a single day , PC cheaters with uncapped framerates , Them taking years to nerf broken characters and many other manipulative practices such as the refinery that buffs platinum cards and the intensive updates that allow characters to go beyond P5 for EIGHT INTENSIVE MANUALS (Thankfully most characters aren't worth P6'ing)

Judging by the games history the game will somehow be in a worse state a year from now as the developers constantly up the ante to keep their whales busy . Anyone sane abandoned the game 4-5 years ago and now it's almost exclusively played by toxic whales . I'd say to avoid it like the plague unless they add a permanent no buffs mode but even then if 3X3 is any indication these cucks will still resort to abusing dumb exploits to get the win

While 3on3 Freestyle is lacking in many ways, it's still a unique entry on the market that is worth trying out. Given that the game is free, there's really no reason for anyone who may have interest not to do so. There is the potential that new modes, courts and characters through post-release support could make the game more appealing, but the core gameplay may not be good enough for those with current-day expectations of traditional sports games to give it much time to improve.
