Saying we did not have high expectations for this 2D sidescroller, is like saying a Smurf is blue. It goes without saying. It is smurfing repetitive. The levels are smurfing uninspired. There is no smurfing variation what-so-ever.It simply smurfs. [September p.89]

You’re looking at an insanely simplistic sidescrolling platformer with a handful of power-ups and ‘special skilled’ Smurfs to swap through. Doing our due diligence, we road-tested this with a six and a nine-year-old. After 30 minutes, they wanted to go play outside. Says it all, really. [October 2013, p83]

The Smurfs 2: The Video Game feels like it was made by following a recipe. The level design and boss fights are incredibly formulaic, and downright dull to play. The developer may have attempted to make a decent movie tie-in, but all that it's managed to produce is a dull, repetitive slog through a tedious campaign.
