This game is the main reason why all current PS exclusives are what they are — story-driven semiaction full of scripts and QTE. Can't blame Sony for that — demand breeds supply, after all. But i personally can't understand people who give this game the title of the best of the decade. Doubtless, story is awesome, but overall gameplay is average at best. Action component was entirely adopted from Uncharted franchise, so nothing new to see here. Stealth is poor due to AI imperfection and survival side of the game properly reveals only on hard difficulties.

7/10 Not bad, but a tad too overrated

The Last of Us was released for the PlayStation as an exclusive, which ended up sparking many debates around the world whether video games should also be considered art. And keeping in mind what this game did, the debate was absolutely necessary. Just by the fact that this one game could make someone talk about this topic itself proves that it is not just an art, it is a masterpiece. Although I haven't actually played this game, I have watched PewDiePie's gameplay on it. And trust me, in no way is this going to affect my verdict on it in any form.
The Last of Us follows the story of Joel, a man who lost his daughter in a sudden zombie outbreak. He manages to rescue a girl named Ellie who was the same age as his daughter, and from there begins their journey to travel across the country to get a better future. Ellie is not an ordinary person. She doesn't get affected by a zombie bite, which is because of her unique genetics. So an organisation named The Fireflies wants to use her to create a cure for the zombie outbreak, which is why Joel and Ellie must make it all the way over there alive.
I really like story based, linear games. A Plague Tale: Innocence is one of my favourite games. And this game really reminded me of that. For having a good linear game the story must be phenomenal, but that is not all there is to do. The characters must also make us feel some bond. Everyone I have known who has played or at least known about this game talks about how Joel and Ellie feel like friends to them. This is the reason why there was so much outrage on Joel's death in the sequel.
Joel and Ellie have a bond that can neither be described as friendship nor guidance. It is something way more than that. Joel has always considered Ellie as a daughter, while Ellie sees Joel as someone she can look up to. This is the reason why Joel is always so defensive in saving Ellie, and even killed the Fireflies to save her in the end when he learnt the only way to cure the world was by euthanising Ellie. If this was any other game everyone would have said something like, "Bruh what was the point of going so far if they had to just end it like that UwU!?" But they didn't. That's because within the runtime Joel and Ellie form such a bond with the gamers that they feel inseparable.
And finally what makes this game so good is the graphics. The animation, the character design, the atmosphere, the motion capture - everything has been done to the point. The music is also very nicely put to use, and the whole idea of Joel playing a guitar is what made this bondage so good. If a single thing was put out of place, the whole game could have fallen apart. In spite of being a zombie game this has more focus on the human element rather than making the player want to go out there and go on an all out rampage.
Let's put it this way - video games are definitely art, and The Last of Us is definitely a masterpiece. It's kinda sad that the sequel does not live up to the expectations that this game gave, and that is the reason why people hate it so much. Because it has created a bar so high up it itself can't reach it now. As a standalone game this was absolutely perfect, but I don't really mind the sequel as much. I hope the franchise returns back to its roots in the future. I'd really appreciate that.

The voice acting is one of the best in any videogame, yet the gameplay is overwhelmingly linear and outdated. Excellent story, bad mechanics. If I wanted to watch a movie I would actually watch a movie, this is a videogame and the very concepts of it fail to be done in this game.

The Last of Us is a fantastic game and a technical feat for the PS3.

Although The Last of Us follows deceptively generic narrative it executes this narrative perfectly with a masterful understanding of pacing.

I would highly recommend The Last of Us.

Outstanding. 8 years since its release, it is still one of the best-looking games ever, and one of the most intriguing stories ever told. The Last of Us is a game that if you haven't played, is a big must-play. The story is great, the characters are compelling, from the mains like Ellie & Joel to the side characters like Tess, Bill, Marlene, David, and others. They're memorable as hell, and each leaves an impression on the player with their emotional impact and plot significance, with Joel and Ellie being at the forefront of this. The story centers around the two of them, their interactions, and the presentation of the hardships that they've gone through together throughout the game. Their relationship developed and grew into familial love, more specifically a Father-Daughter connection. The gameplay was really good and is one of the highlights of the game. It had very nice gunplay, with several weapons to choose from, but the variety of weaponry isn't a lot, which isn't a criticism btw 'cause I know for a fact that this is an action survival game where loot is scarce, it's not Borderlands. The stealth is by far my favorite thing about the gameplay. Stealth is my go-to mechanic in video games (if it offers any) because it feels so satisfying when executed perfectly and it's nice doing executions against enemies with the sheer thought of not even a single soul would know you're the perpetrator of the act. Collecting stuff for better character stats and weapon upgrades has always been a treat. Finding gears, pliers, and pills in drawers and cabinets felt very rewarding. The graphics, as I said in my first sentence, is gorgeous. The character models and landscapes are great representatives of this. Despite the post-apocalyptic world that TLOU is set in, it's surprisingly vibrant. It's full of wonderful colors like orange and yellow, but the game doesn't shy away with getting darker with the tones, utilizing black with the more murky levels. The music is another thing worthy of praise because it harmonizes perfectly with every scenery. Now, I'm going to write my thoughts on this game's ending, so the reader's discretion is advised if you haven't played the game. MAJOR SPOILERS. Now it's been debated A TON in Reddit discussions and other forums out there for quite some time now, and seeing a couple of posts about it to this very day. It's such a controversial and questionable ending, especially when the concept of morality is put into consideration. But everything the game builds up to this moment was seen in Joel's eyes. He suffered because of the death of his biological daughter in the hands of humanity, and so he lost a single damn about humanity's survival and sacrificed it for the newfound love he has discovered in Ellie. It's a great way of presenting an indirect and subtle theme of revenge. I really don't have much to say anymore, because everything great about this game has already been said and set into stone, probably even better than I did. The Last of Us is utterly amazing. 10/10. Every location is special in something, it has specific mechanics - riding horse, sniper turret, "king of the hill" when you have to defend building against zombie raid.
You take the role of Mr.Joel in a "present day" and then in post-apocalyptic world, your job is to take Ellie (who I believe is the character of this generation) to a rebel group "the Fireflies". SImple plot, but as i said before, its simple and beautiful to watch how their relationship goes.
During your journey you will find characters that you can love and definitely also hate.
Not only Joel and Ellie's love (as father and daughter you weirdos) grow, your love for these characters will also grow.

I cna give it other rating than 10/10, its probably TOP3 PS3 games. Its hard to believe that this game is from 2013. Damn

The Last of Us is a great action-adventure game that manages to capture the feeling of post-apocalypse and survival. The story is alright but way too manipulative and borrows heavily from other, better, material. Still the segmented survival gameplay and the amazing audiovisual production makes the game an experience everybody should check out.

Despite the breakneck pace of the prologue, it takes quite a while for The Last of Us to pick up some speed again. However, once the cold harsh winter arrives, the action (and story) ramps up. So much so, it puts most Hollywood productions to shame. [July 2013, p.76]
