as a pretty big fan of the silent hill series, i'm very satisfied with this game and it's improvements over previous silent hill titles. the storyline is great, the atmosphere is just as frightening as any of the other games, and the combat system is much improved and not as clunky. for a survival horror title, you can't ask for much more in my opinion.

Game wasn't that bad, but I feel that they copied the movie which sucked big time. There were some decent scares, but it wasn't the best or worse silent hill.

this was an alright game. I found myself at times getting dizzy running in circles, because you never knew 'which was the right direction to go, or trying to finding stuff. This game didn't really scare me, but I respect the spook feel to it. I wish there was more diverse monsters, but that's the only complaint I have. Game wasn't that entertaining, but it didn't' suck at all.

"Silent Hill: Homecoming" is the least satisfying in the series. Developed by Double Helix Games (an American company), it lacks the unique and bizarre atmospheres of previous entries. Yet, while it doesn't live up to the series' standards, the game still manages to deliver a few goose bumps. This is mainly due to the game's pacing and story elements. "Homecoming" has a strong premise and stays true to the original concept. That's why it ultimately works despite the clumsy combat and generic locations. The subtitle is a reference to the return of its protagonist, a war veteran named Alex Shephard. Alex has reoccuring nightmares of his younger brother in serious trouble. So he is absolutely horrified when he returns home only to discover that his brother is missing. Not only that, but the town itself (Shephard's Glen) seems to be plagued by a supernatural evil. As Alex searches for his missing sibling, the town around him changes in appearance much like it did in the 2006 "Silent Hill" movie. Pyramid Head from "Silent Hill 2" returns, but the rest of the creatures are rather tepid in appearance. This is an almost generic entry in terms of level and creature design. "Silent Hill: Homecoming" may not be a revolutionary title but I sort of liked it despite itself. Double Helix provides enough creepy stuff to satisfy horror fans. And Akira Yamaoka's haunting score enhances the tone brilliantly. Expand

Even with a dramatically improved fighting system over the previous games in the series it keeps the fear up by making encounters more dangerous than ever. Unfortunately it feels more like a imitator than an actual Silent Hill game.

What is not good is that SH:HC is truly playable while completely unfrightening. Much of the horror of the older SH games came from the intentionally bad controls and the worthless weapons. Yeah maybe the lousy graphics, too. SH:HC is rather like an ordinary game. And sometimes, sometimes the story unpredictably kicks your ass. That makes the gameplay feel bad. You stand there with two different expectations (knowing the predecessors and on the other hand expect a more or less playable modern game), but you get both expectations disappointed. And how can the developpers explain the huge gap between the quality of the ordinary monsters design (the modelization of dogs and nurses was better on PS2... that's a limit for the first and big return of the series on new gen!) and the one of the different bosses (only good point of the game, maybe the best bosses of the all series! The most difficult to get rid of too...)? How can they explain the awful fight system (unplayable! In addition, the hero can't run away anymore...) and the level design coming from the age of the first 3D games on PS one?
Shattered Memories gave me hope in the future of the SH license. Homecoming sank me back into despair...
The Vatra Team will have to be careful for the chapter to come. SH Downpour is seen by lots of fans like me as the last chance for the series to recover even just an ounce of glory.

This game by all means isn't horrible, but really Double Helix could have done better. No complaints about combat, however the recycled "Bogeyman," Nurse, and "Smogs" make it feel like nothing but fan service. And another huge problem is how predictable the whole story is and how much unnecessary gore they actually put into this game (albeit some argue it expresses the symbolism when really it just seems there for the "spookyness") However there are good things that I'd like to express about the game, such some of the otherworld designs (I love me some steam punk!). Also Mayor Bartlet and Lillian Sheppard were mysterious characters that seemed to fit well with the plot, which is awesome. I could go on, but in short, a great survival/horror game, but a questionable Silent Hill title. Expand

The story isn't nearly as bad as what people say it is and there is a lot of good here overall. The only bad part of the game is in the enemy designs. The nurses, dogs, smog, and even pyramid head seem more like gameplay varients (like in an action game) than physical manifestations of the character's fears and anxieties. The bosses show the more imaginative side of the game and are definately the highlights of the game, but the other enemies seemed more like an afterthought. Another issue I have is the fact that it just isn't as scary as past Silent Hill games. There were some moments where I was tensed up, but that was it. The monsters aren't scary because they are designed around gameplay with all there weak points and finishing moves. But there was just something about this game that kept me coming. I beat this game about ten times, got all the endings and costumes and only recently sold it. I almost miss the game, but I realize that I played that game dry and I would only get bored if I tried to play it again. Let's just hope Downpour can take what Homecoming got right and fix what they got wrong so that we can have a great silent hill game on the PS3. Expand

Instead of being a last resort, they overhauled the game to feature combat predominately (even featuring light vs. heavy attacks, combos, etc.). I don't understand what long-time Silent Hill fan was begging the studio to put combat at the forefront or if they just totally misunderstood what the franchise is about.

The atmosphere is still creepy, with both Shephard's Glen and Silent Hill as beautiful and eerie locales, but the insistence on forcing you into janky combat frequently REALLY hurts the game

Every game has something unique to offer to the series and Homecoming is no different. Offering a new combat system and streamlined controls. Throwing away tank controls does do some harm to the atmosphere the game is trying to create, but there are still genuine creepy moments. Make no mistake, running away from a fight is still your best option, when you can take it. Most of the monsters are no push over, and down right ferocious. If giving the chance they will kill Alex without any problem. The boss fights, on the other hand, where disappointing and offered little to no challenge at all. Including the final boss, which only succeeds in being disgusting.

The story isn't the strongest the series has to offer, but for what it is, it's good. And if you've played Silent Hill 2, you should be able to figure out the twist at the end. Though, a lot of the characters needed more time to develop. We barely learn anything about the antagonists of the game, and there are even two throw away characters that only exist to move the story forward. And really Pyramid Head had no reason being in the game. He was only there to remind the player of Silent Hill 2. Still, as a character study, it works. The game only wishes to focus on Alex's quest to find his brother, and that's mainly what the game focuses on.

The game looks scary in it's own way, in that the eyes on character models don't always match up with where they are looking. But the fog from previous games is still there and it does help to create an atmosphere that can at times be unsettling. There are also two different kinds of settings in the game. There is the normal world and the hell world. The normal world is the foggy city we've all come to know and understand. The hell world is something taking right out of an H. P. Lovecraft novel, and I like it. The difference between the two couldn't contrast more than it does. And the game loves to switch between them constantly, bringing a caution with every building you enter. In the end, if you enjoy the visuals of Silent Hill then you will enjoy the way this game looks.

Silent Hill: Homecoming is a somewhat underrated game. It's controls are a much needed improvement for the series, allowing a much wider audience to join in to the experience of the series.

Many game forums I've been frequently visit give Homecoming much more positive feedback, say 8 or 9 +, there are heated discussion about which ending is the best as well, I'm really surprise to see it barely makes a 7 here.

BTW, most discussed question I've encountered is why does Alex have to shot his mum to achieve a transitional good ending? So the people I know usually pick the Downing ending the best outcome

Replayability can mean both story mode and multiplayer available, split creen or online. It can mean multiple story threads or endings. It can also mean open world- a lot of endless explotrng doing nothing but having a good time w/ whatever you want to do. Well here it what I ratd SH:H. Gameplay gets an 8 because I enjoy survival horror and it gave you that. To me, combat was satisfying but the enemies have cheap shots. It felt like the town or universe of SH that I have come to expect, but I wasn't "wowed" with it like I thought I would be on the PS3. Maybe it had to do wit the graphics. Maybe it had to do with how the story was told. You learned the majority of it in the last 5th of the game. So it felt kinda hollow (the story that you play). You ran around the earlier parts of the game trying to piece what happened together but you just end up running around finding out notihng. Next. Graphics I gave a 7.8. These graphics are excellent PS2 grahics, excellent last generation graphics but not up to quality of the best of this generation: games like MGS4, Motorstorm, Condemned 2, DMC4. Audio gets an 8.5. Nothing really to complain about.. I liked it. It set the mood. I can see why earlier games and their reviews gave this composer high marks. Dialogue and effects sound were satisfactory. Replayability I give it a point one five (.15) because of the multiple endings you can replay for. Add all those #s up and divide by 3. Viola. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The obvious problem with this game is plot and bugs.
PS3 has tons of them. Like both X and O buttons are confirm buttons when you are examine the items in your inventory. You can use your precious rare serum by accident and next regret and reload the game - and the game tells you that O is the back or cancel button - what was QA doing?
PC bugs are even more critical - tons of game crashes. The game does not even work on Windows XP correctly, almost impossible to run on Win11.
The game takes part at 2 am and everything is dark but all shadows is one single black color - no even shades or gradient. Just blank black screen if you turn of the flashlight - and this is PS3/XBOX360 graphic. Even PS1 Silent Hill game had no such problems.
Morale choices teach you to tolerate abuse, torture your mother (main character did not kill her with a bullet in the head but just shot her body and waited till she died in a torture device). So, want the best ending? Do the things wrong.
Also Pyramidhead is out of place - as I learnt the producer tried to save the game but making changes to the plot and removing this monster but was totally ignored by the team that next ask the management to remove him from the project. Well, as we can see, the developer (Double Helix Games) continued to create bad games in other franchises like Front Mission. Shame on them.
As for music we can thanks Akira Yamaoka who did the great job again. Overall graphic design - copypaste of Team Silent work. Anything new that was added by a new developer - just terrible.
I like the game - yes. But it is subjective. In objective way the game is bad - bad graphic for 2008, tons of bugs, terrible story from moral point of view.

I first played Homecoming a long time ago as a budding Silent Hill fan, having first played SH3 and 2. I was never able to get past a certain part, and over the years I always had a negative view of it in my head. I finally got around to actually replaying it and finally attempting a full playthrough very recently. I was never able to get past a certain part, and over the years I always had a negative view of it in my head. I finally got around to actually replaying it and finally attempting a full playthrough very recently. I came in expecting it to be a mess, but I was actually very pleasantly surprised by Homecoming.

Let's start with the pros. Homecoming, for the most part, retains the series' engaging atmosphere and level design, with foggy towns surrounded by dilapidated buildings. Puzzles were for the most part clever and interesting, some of the combat was fun, it has truly great monster/boss design, very interesting lore, and some impressive graphics at times. By far my favorite part of this game were the Otherworld segments. They did a fantastic job of making the Otherworld environments feel super trippy, surreal, and hellish. Sometimes I couldn't help but feel being in the Otherworld in Homecoming was equivalent to actually being in a real Hell. The visual designs, exploration, and puzzles in these segments were absolute artistic highlights of the game. One odd thing this game did really well was the graphics on the enemies and bosses; something about the textures and lighting on them made them look strangely photo-realistic, which never failed to impress me.

Now on to the cons. Almost everything I mentioned above has a downside to it in some kind of way. While the graphics are impressive in places, in others they are downright bad (very low resolution textures in some environments and awful character models). Some of the levels are pretty boring to traverse, with the Prison level being ridiculously bland and linear to the point of feeling lazy. The bosses, while very visually impressive, are lackluster and not fun to fight (the final boss is fun, though). The characters are not all that interesting or memorable, and the endings leave more to be desired.

The gameplay overall can also get a bit repetitive and bland, with the combat being the worst offender. It really gets tedious and problematic as the game goes on, with the nurses and Schisms (hammer-head shark things) being nightmares to fight properly. It's just that the clunky controls and awkward movement hinder the overall smoothness of the game.

In the end, Homecoming is a surprisingly good game, considering its reputation in the franchise. It has a good number of frustrating problems that show off how unpolished the game really is, but it has so many good and interesting qualities that I found it hard to not be engaged and wanting to come back for more. I would give it a 7.5 out of 10, but for the sake of Metacritic, I chose 8.

se nota el deterioro de la saga con este juego, si bien no es malo queda detras de los anteriores, lo recomiendo solo si eres fan de la franquicia

SH: HC was a decent effort for a first PS3 Silent Hill game, I can give Konami that.

Firstly, I will mention the positive aspects. The monsters' designs looked incredible, some bosses had some of the best and creepiest designs in the whole series. The combat was fluid and while that is a positive thing, I will mention later why it also acted as a double-edged sword. And now, the

And now, the negative. Pyramid Head shouldn't have been in the game. Konami decided to draw the fan-service card and recycled the most iconic monster in the series, giving it a completely unnecessary new design and role in this story. He wasn't even a fightable boss, he was just there to boost the sales probably. While the gameplay was a lot more fluid and deep than in the older entries, it also meant that the protagonist felt a lot stronger and competent making it less scary to face the monsters. It was a decent effort but it backfired to me. The game didn't have the same vibe and deviated from the originals in an attempt to do something cool and fresh but did not quite accomplish that.

Won't complain about the plot, I liked it and the characters were mildly memorable. Not a bad SH title but also very far from one of the best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Oh boy, where do i start?
Bought this game when it came out for PS3, started playing with my friends and we were shocked how bad it was, and we stopped playing, like 1 hour into the game.

Over the past few years i tried to play the game solo, never mind how bad it was, i paid money.
Each time i barely made it past the 2 hour mark.

A few days ago i finally started to play again and managed to finish it yesterday, during the middle of the game i think it shines the most, if you can use the term shine at all on this game. you have some jump scares but you are never really afraid like i was in SH2 and 3.

I was shocked at how bad the game was optimized on the PS3, graphics errors everywhere, mostly on the character models, the eyes and mouths look just terrible, mind Dr. Fitches barely moving lips.
the sound....why are the conversations sooooooo silent? music and sound effects are fine but then i hardly can understand what people were saying, i had to turn on the subtitles.
generally the sound is quite buggy, especially during cut scenes.

and now lets talk about the last chapter, why the heck are my weapons taken away and then i need to search for them again, why are they scattered all around the facilities?
in the end i stumbled into the last boss fight with the dagger, steel pipe and an empty 9mm gun.

and even though i played on easy(i just couldn't waste time on the hard difficult) it took FOREVER to kill the last boss, i felt like 10 again wanting to throw the controller again the wall, which brings me to this stupid combat system.
Alex never dodges into the direction i want to, fights against those "walking on blades" enemies is a MAJOR PITA, especially when there are several around. then again those huge "two people glued together enemies (which share the huge club like hand weapons, stolen from SH2) die by 2 quick shot gun shells......

After all, the game's story was probably the best part of it, some areas were quite cool, like the prison but its hardly a silent hill game, SH4 was already quite different but i could accept it.

The presence of Pyramid head was just unnecessary, he was a manifestation by James in SH2, and shouldn't be in other SH games. and in general why did the creators borrowed so much stuff from the SH movie?

so yes there are a few "good" things but over all the game was a disappointment.
    *edit*
whoops, forgot about the soundtrack, akira yamaoka, do i have to say more?

At least I could get through this one. This one was a bit better imo compared to Origins and Downpour. And those other two. Not something I'd recommend tho, not that it's the worse thing in the world that is.

The worst game of the saga, the loss of the essence of the original games is noticeable. The worst story that includes unnecessary fan service.

I had to create a Metacritic account just to be able to vent the steam coming out of both my ears RN. So much for industrial design; outside of the initial hotel and cemetery levels, I hated every minute of walking through all those bland movie-inspired levels with those uninspired and all-too-common monsters. I liked scarlet as a boss, but thats it. I won't even mention the **** weapon selection and forgettable story arc. I have absolutely no sympathy for any of the characters and I dont understand why the good ending has Alex remain living since the writers already killed every single person, and worst of all, they dont e4ven give a single substantial reason for the kidnappingsa aside from the occasional mention of a curs3e point blanc. A bit of a letdown. The gameplay has been reduced from a tense psychological experience fraught with spine tingling jumps and scares to a generic, predictable action title set in the location with good graphics and a great soundtrack.
  2. The folks at Double Helix gave me the Silent Hill I wanted: a nerve-racking, scary as hell experience to hold me over this Halloween season. Any fan of Silent Hill should be checking this out, and anyone just needing a good scare can join in the Homecoming.
  3. American developer Double Helix has managed to stick its landing—right in the uneasy, dark parts of the mind that define the Silent Hill experience.
