    This game is essentially Resident Evil 5 with a lot more childish yet funny sexual puns (Considering the handgun is called a boner) It uses most of the control mechanics from Resident Evil 5 as well (You can strife side to side when aiming unlike RE5); using the d-pad to switch different weapons, L1 to aim and R1 to fire, and a 180 degree camera flip. Hooray for Resident Evil 4 references) The story isn't anything extremely special, it reminds me a lot of Dante's Inferno's story(The game not the book); A demon takes the protagonists' girlfriend into a hell-like place and naturally, you have to get her back. Even though the story isn't incredible, the one-liners between the main character, Garcia Hotspur and his witty & smart mouthed demon skull companion will have you chuckling all the way to the end. Overall, a game that definitely is unique to the third-person genre and should not be missed.… Expand

    This is a must play, if u love games like devil may cry, resident evil and bayonetta don't miss this. Got a wicked twist of humour with awesome smooth game play. Making it a new franchise that I will definitely support.

    You've probably heard that your friend/weapon in this game is named Johnson, and that the main, pistol-like weapon is dubbed the "Boner". Maybe you also know that weapon eventually morphs into the "Hot Boner" and, when Johnson is particularly aroused, the "Big Boner". Despite creative names, the weapons you possess are variations on the pistol, machine gun, and shotgun present in any shooter, all equipped with an alternate "Light Shot" used to shoot goat heads and smash the armor (made of darkness) on enemies so you can kill them. Fighting in this game is hectic and mesmerizing...and fun. While there are times you'll feel like you're in the middle of another samey fight sequence, the game is smart enough to mix it up so you're never bored. Late in the game, you'll even be thrown into truly original situations that have the Suda 51 feel to them, creating a feeling of a game that is part Killer 7 and part Resident Evil 4. Beyond the gameplay, the story here really shines as well. Story books let you in on the back stories of the bosses you'll fight, and Garcia's motives are never really understood until the end. Yes, it's a bit derivative, but who cares when you're having this much fun?… Expand

You will notice that the game repeats itself with its enemies and puzzles and eventually stops producing original ideas. The gameplay is similar to what which can be found in games like Dead space and Resident evil 4. The dialog between Garcia and Johnson, the two main characters, is probably the highlight of the game, considering the weak story. The game just feels padded, like it tries very hard to artificially increase it's own life span with uninteresting sections and long boring boss fights. Mostly,you can say the game is still enjoyable, but it doesn't have anything special to brag about, besides the lunatic humor and dick jokes which are, and let's face it, not even that funny anyway.… Expand

    for those who are looking for horror and scary moments, this game just WON'T fit on you. This is perfect for those who come back home after hours of working and all you want to do is explode some heads and laugh a little. Graphics totally disappointed me, but, the game never wanted to be a Demons Destruction Simulator. It's a pretty nice game, perfect for those who want to have fun playingfor those who are looking for horror and scary moments, this game just WON'T fit on you.     Unapologetically adolescent, playful, and fun. Humorously shockingly and never boring,strong gameplay with artistic delights and hell of a lot of fun.Suda did another masterpiece and if you like Suda 51 and Shinji Mikami you will love this game,pure and simple a trash masterpiece! You owe it to yourself to check it out

    I'm currently on Act 3-2 (about 5 hours in). If you have any interest in Suda 51's dark humour & art style as a developer, then this game will not disappoint you. Shadows of the Damned is a perfect combination of eerie & hilarious, and while graphically the game doesn't break any new ground, the game more than makes up for it with it's stylistic visuals and unorthodox gameplay elements.I'm currently on Act 3-2 (about 5 hours in). Not to mention, the musical score is a unique achievement all its own; which can only be described as Silent Hill meets Planet Terror.

    The combat, more often than not, is intense and enjoyable; and the boss battles are fun & challenging without being frustrating. My only gripe is that the controls can feel a bit clunky & sluggish at times, but not any more so than say Resident Evil 4. The one-button 180 degree turn mechanic helps remedy this to some degree, but on occasion the sprint button does feel unresponsive (and it really should have been mapped to L3 instead of R1). Again, this is a minor gripe, and it doesn't occur frequently enough to hurt the gameplay. Aside from that, the game does feel like it will probably clock in at around 10 hours. However, I'm playing on the hardest difficulty, so I'm probably looking at about 12 hours. Personally I'm okay with this.

    The light & dark gameplay mechanic is somewhat similar to what is found in Alan Wake (and is executed just as well), but it definitely has the Suda 51 trademark -- shooting munching goat heads as light sources, and igniting fireworks machines instead of boring flood lights. Goat heads you say? Yes... absolutely. And even the game's main character is as baffled as you. Upon discovering this, he aptly replies: "What do I have to do to unlock a door? F##K a horse?"

    I just finished this game, and I don't know what people are complaining about. It's a campy gridnhouse game, of course it's going to be immature and cheesy. You don't go see The Dark Knight not wanting to see Batman do you...The game sets out to be a thrill ride to Hell with some cheesy jokes along the way and it does just that. The game play is smooth and fun, although later parts in theI just finished this game, and I don't know what people are complaining about.     Legendary japanese names such as Suda Goichi who is known for his crazy ideas in his games directed No More Heroes, Shinji Mikami who is the guy who basically created the third person genre and created the Resident Evil series, and Akira Yamaoka who made the creepy sounds for the Silent Hill series, they all 3 team together to make this awesome game.

    Design:

    This game has a punk and B-movie style feel to it, its design is unique, especially the vibrant neon colours which renders the strange new hell. This hell is like no other hell expressed before, it has like a medieval design to it and goes by it's own rules.

    Those out there who like Quantin Tarantino and Rodriguez should love this as this game is heavily influenced by movies like From Dusk Till Dawn and Grindhouse. Some reviews pointed out that they did not like the dialogue in the game, but it is meant to be cheesy because it is also influenced be Evil Dead.

    FIRSTLY, this game was made to give the players pure fun and is not meant to be taken seriously. The dialogue is there to make you laugh as it is influenced by B-movies, the main character swears alot, makes memorable quotes with his mexican accent and acts badass, he reminds me alot of Ash from Evil Dead. He calls his gun the Boner because it can extend and become bigger. The main character's demon partner, Johnson has a british accent and is hilarious, he tours you around hell as he used to live there, he reminds me of the robot with the british voice in Portal 2.

    Story:

    The story of the game is about a demon slayer, Garcia Hotspur, who has upset the lord of demons, Flemming by killing one too many demons. Flemming kidnaps Garcia's lover Paula to get revenge on him for what he has done to his minions. Garcia, with the help of his demon partner and friend, Johnson, who has the ability to shapeshift into different weapons, set out together to kick the prince of demon's ass, and to bring back his lover, the story progresses along the way and odd things happen.

    Gameplay:

    The gameplay plays like Dead Space and Resident Evil 4, it is an over the shoulder shooter in which you aim with a laser sight and walk while aiming, headshots are vital to execute demons quickily. You upgrade your guns in the game alot as you progress through the game, making it more dangerous for your foes. Light and Darkness play a big role in the game, you must lure enemies away from the darkness, as the darkness makes demons invulnerable and then shoot them with a light shot to make them vulnerable. If you love bosses to fight against, this game is made just for you.

    Overall:

    I give this a 9.5/10 as this game is like no other, it is random in a good way because it is full of surprises, and has a B-movie style to it.

    The gameplay is great overall besides from the rarely occasional camera problems when you are aiming in a tight space, but that doesn't effect the overall experience as it does not happen much.

    There is no new game which means you can't start a new game with your upgraded weapons after you have completed the game which is a little bit of a disappointment, but you can always play the game on the harder difficulty if you have completed the game on normal. You can always experience the crazy journey again or try to unlock trophies.

    It is like experiencing a 10-12 hours Tarantino and Rodriguez movie which everyones gotta experience, its ashame there isn't much hype to this game. Definitely a must buy.

The controls feel kinda stiff for a third person shooter, and for anyone who is used to aiming with a reticle, the laser site targeting will take getting used to. The boss battles throughout the game range from kinda fun to bad, mostly due to the stiffness in movement and control. The graphics are pretty good, with a nice sense of style and color, but they are ruined somewhat by the frequent texture pop in and aliasing problems. The soundtrack by Akira Yamaoka is pretty darn good but it feels a bit underused throughout the game. The voice-acting is alright, but while there are enough vulgar jokes in this game to go head to head with Bulletstorm (the other dick-joke simulator), unlike Bulletstorm, none of the jokes here are particularly funny , and some of the puns and one-liners are downright terrible. Overall, this is a game that I was never quite bored with but I never really warmed up to it either. The controls are clunky, the unique ideas half-baked and despite the original setting the story is pretty simple. Also, the game is about 9 hours long with zero replay incentive and no extra modes, no new game+ and no collectibles, so I can't recommend anyone to buy it unless they are dead set on it already. The influence of blood and gore, the dark horror elements and its emphasis on nudity really shows a twisted but inspired world. The problems start to escalate once you find yourself doing the same objectives again and again. I like the Alan Wake-ish use of lightsources as a weapon to blind enemies, and its senseShadows of the Damned is a **** of cool ideas inspired by grindhouse cinema. I like the Alan Wake-ish use of lightsources as a weapon to blind enemies, and its sense of humour is very distinguishable, but how many times do you have to clear out enemies by shooting a damn goathead? the boss fights aren't really that challenging, though some provide a sense of scale, you have to use darkpools effectively to rid of these bosses, which amounts to simplicity more than challenge. I'm also not fond of the protagonist spouting Spanish idiolect phrases and other than the merchant that sells you demonic goods, there are no memorable characters. The humour itself dries up fairly quickly, when I first heard that the boner was the name given to a weapon I chuckled but soon it became dull and incessant. Generally Shadows of the Damned is more than worth a kick, but it's over rather quickly and the mechanics and narrative are sub par. Definately want to see a sequel down the road though.… Expand

    I fell for EA's marketing trick again. This is the worst game that I've played in 2012, worse than FF13-2 by a mile. The boss fights are the most outdated, cheap and frustrating fights that I've played in a long time. I don't think I played a game that has this badly designed bosses since the PS2 days. The soundtrack is incredible and the actual shooting is competent, cribbing from RE4 and mixing up that basic formula in new ways.     I wanted to like this game. I'm always interested when gamers love a game that doesn't do well with critics. In this case, I have to agree with the critics. On the score at least. That said, you may very well enjoy Shadows of the Damned. There are plenty of visually arresting images combined with seemingly innocent ones. Plenty to shake your head at while being slightly creeped out. But inI wanted to like this game. I'm always interested when gamers love a game that doesn't do well with critics. In this case, I have to agree with the critics. On the score at least. That said, you may very well enjoy Shadows of the Damned. There are plenty of visually arresting images combined with seemingly innocent ones. Plenty to shake your head at while being slightly creeped out. But in the big picture, this is a sloppy third person shooter, with a horrible camera, repetitive enemies, environments and worst of all, it's an Unreal 3 game. As a PS3 owner, I have come to expect quite a bit more out of my games and Shadows doesn't nearly cut it. When an established studio like Grasshopper decides to use middleware, you can rest assured they are compromising on quality. That about sums up this offering. The game was strange, game-play seemed off, and it's psychedelic atmospheric was headache inducing. Dialog was as not funny, it was all bad puns and PG-13 sexual innuendo.     Sorry but this game is neither “underrated” nor “overlooked” as some have tried to suggest all over the internet. I’m with the critics again. While its 3rd person RE4-like gameplay is solid, the other parts of the game are not. They contain infuriating 2D sections and other mini-games that drag the experience horribly down. While it's not the most challenging shooter out there, the witty comedy, beautifully designed environments, and immersive gameplay make it clear that the game knowsA fantastic and rich shooter just brimming with ideas, there isn't a dull moment in this game. But with a game like Shadow of the Damned, Damn, I wish I could have one of those Johnsons like him. It's now on the Playstation Network and hopefully, I could play an hour long or so. But with a game like Shadow of the Damned, Damn, I wish I could have one of those Johnsons like him. It's now on the Playstation Network and hopefully, I could play an hour long or so. Kennedy (Resident Evil 4) and Tony Montana (Scarface) and make it a sexually-toned hack n' slash game that could make Dante cry for his mommy?" I think this is one of the best games of 2011! Better than any EA game of last year like Alice: Madness Returns, Bulletstorm, and Portal 2. As soon as they have a release date soon for the new Lollipop Chainsaw, I'll still falling in love for newcomer Juliet Starling, she's the new face of hack n' slash and more kick-ass than Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I hope they should stick it to an M-rated title on the game. (Sorry, Teenagers aren't allowed because Juliet's 21-years-old). 2012, it's gonna be a big year for video games.     Very fun for a survival horror game, with a few funny bits too. It lacks some fundamentals (in my opinion) such as chapter select and New Game + features, but the goodness heavily outweighs these pitfalls!

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When a company like EA releases a game like this with absolutely no marketing and no Japanese release its bound to fail financially. It was also doomed to fail with critics because most reviewers are up tight fanboys who didn't learn there lesson with killer7. If you dont have a stick up your ass then you will probably enjoy the comedy and writing. voice acting is spot on, some of the best this gen. The music is fantastic as it should be with Akira Yamaoka composing. The gameplay is alright and focuses on weapon upgrades and puzzles, The boss fights are enjoyable and the shooting aspect makes it feel like resident evil 4 but faster. play it on hard your fist go because its not really that hard of a game to begin with. Anyway the game is pretty much at bargin bin prices now so you have no reason to not buy it anymotr… Expand

    Not perfect but definitely a must-play for anyone with taste. A variety of gameplay styles are used throughout the game, all of which are base don the same basic rules.

    Hell just got a new look and meaning. The humar, story, and gameplay is what makes this game a one of a kind even though the graphic is not much. This is one of my best game alongside Gears of War series, Saints Row: The Third, Uncharted series, Mass Effect series, Grand Theft Auto III/Vice City/San Andreas/Liberty City Stories/Vice City Stories, Metal Gear Solid, and Batman: Arkham Asylum/City.

    If you can handle gore and dick jokes, then you NEED to play this game. Resi 4 gameplay, great stylized enemies and environments, good story and surprisingly well developed characters. The guns are fun to use, the enemies can be actually intimidating, and the music is sublime. All of this put with some well used humor and lots of WTF moments, and you have a great game. No major flaws onIf you can handle gore and dick jokes, then you NEED to play this game.     It's a cult classic for a reason. Personally I find the humour to be somewhat childish though I did laugh at times. Graphic wise, this game may not stand the test of time as well as others but I believe it will still be loved for years to come.

    If you love dia de los muertos, hilarious side kicks, badass protagonists, 80s horror movies, awesome movie references and a great time you will love shadows of the damned. This game is super awesome because of its beautiful level design. fantastic colors and memorable monsters it also has really unexpected moments that make you wanna headbang this game without a doubt is **** awesome

    Demon hunter Garcia Hotspur comes home to find his girlfriend, Paula, being abducted by the Lord of Demons, Fleming, who brags that he will take Paula with him to kill her again and again. Garcia is powerless to stop Fleming, but instead follows him back to the underworld along with his demon sidekick, Johnson, who also acts as his gun, torch and motorcycle. In the demon world, JohnsonDemon hunter Garcia Hotspur comes home to find his girlfriend, Paula, being abducted by the Lord of Demons, Fleming, who brags that he will take Paula with him to kill her again and again. Garcia is powerless to stop Fleming, but instead follows him back to the underworld along with his demon sidekick, Johnson, who also acts as his gun, torch and motorcycle. In the demon world, Johnson helps guide Garcia through the twisted nature of the demon realm, defeating numerous enemies that try to feed on Garcia's flesh, and keeping him away from the darkness that destroys the human flesh. As they travel, they witness numerous deaths of Paula by Fleming and other demons, all to toy with Garcia's senses. Another human demon hunter, who simply goes by the name "Colonel", temporarily aids Garcia, but then leaves to get revenge on the death of his loved one, only to be brutally killed later. Garcia also encounters an ally in Christopher, a half-human, half-demon that sells Garcia valuable goods to boost his demon-fighting powers.

    Later in the game, Garcia and Johnson learn of the Unbreakable Huntress, the first female demon slayer to ever challenge Fleming. The Unbreakable Huntress challenged Fleming, but was brutally dismembered by the demon king. Impressed with her refusal to surrender even when reduced to a quad amputee, Fleming made the Huntress into his queen, only to repeatedly kill her over and over again, healing any wounds that resulted from the torture. In rebellion, the Unbreakable Huntress continued to escape from the City of the Damned, only to be dragged back and killed by Fleming. Paula is hinted to have been the Unbreakable Huntress prior to the start of the game.

    Eventually, Garcia reaches Fleming's "Castle of Hassle", and battles his way through to its top, where Fleming awaits him, Paula encased within his cloak. Fleming enters into battle with Garcia, but Garcia gains the upper hand, and destroys him. He rushes to Paula's side, but she hits him, angered that he watched her die over and over and made no attempt to stop it or comfort her. Furious, she transforms into a demon herself, and attacks Garcia, but Garcia eventually weakens her enough. Paula reverts to her human form, and as she lies wounded and the darkness surrounds them, Garcia comforts her and apologizes.

    In the epilogue, Garcia and Paula have returned to his home and are planning for a trip, when Garcia receives a call from Fleming, warning him that more demons are coming for him. Garcia takes this in stride, commenting that as long as he is dating the Lord of Demon's mistress, demons will continue to follow them, and he vows to kill every last one.    … Expand

    I enjoyed the narrative while I played, seemed to have a unique touch to it. The game itself though feels like a budget indie game, poor camera that gives me a headache after playing for a bit, clunky controls and the weapons are nothing special, it's actually one of the worst 3rd person shooters I played in a while tbh.

    It's plenty of fun. The graphics seem to hold up well for the time. It's plenty colorful, literally and in terms of character. And it's a terribly easy game making it a breeze to play through. I didn't even realize I was on the hardest difficulty until I was nearly to the final boss. The boss fights are easy but frustrating for how long they take. After you rinse and repeat the same action and process for what feels like the umpteenth time you desperately want nothing more than the fight to be over with. It's not a test of skill but rather of patience.

    The game also reminded me a ton of Lollipop Chainsaw in terms of tone and style which makes sense because after I finished the game I discovered that both were Suda 51 projects. I liked this a hell of a lot more than Lollipop Chainsaw though. No pun intended.

    A Japanese game that stars a Mexican character voiced by a White American is an interesting decision to say the least. I feel like that wouldn't fly in 2020 but snuck under the radar in 2011. I didn't love Blum's voicework on this. I'm a huge fan of him as Wolverine but he was just distracting in this. I quite enjoyed the voice actor for the character of Johnson though.

    This game felt janky at times and like it needed a bit more polish. I hated the camera placement which made it hard to see at times but they balanced that with terrible AI hitbox detection. You could simply barely move to any direction and it would cause the enemy attack animation to miss. Again this game was terribly easy.

    Overall it was fun, interesting, and original enough. I'm glad I played this game and it was a hell of a lot better than a lot of similar crap I've played from this era. I really like 3rd person horror shooters and while this was on the lesser end of that spectrum it was still a solid enough game.    … Expand

    Shadows of the DAMNED is damned to be good, this game is third person shooter with interesting story with fun dialogue and fun protaginst, really enjoyable but it had it weekness as it takes a lot of time to get comftroble with the quricky camera, other then that great game.

    This game is essentially Resident Evil 5 with much more childish and fun sex puns (Considering the gun is called horny) It also uses most of the control mechanics of Resident Evil 5 (You can fight side by side when aiming as opposed to RE5); using the d-pad to switch between different weapons, L1 to aim and R1 to shoot, and a 180 degree camera flip. Long live the Resident Evil 4 references) The story isn't anything terribly special, that's all. reminds me a lot of the story of Dante's Inferno A demon takes the protagonist's girlfriend to a hellish place and naturally you have to get her back. Even if the story isn't amazing, the short sentences between the main character, Garcia Hotspur, and his witty, smart-mouthed demon skull companion will have you laughing until the very end. Overall, a game that is definitely unique to the third-person genre and shouldn't be missed.
    I'm sad that there won't be a sequel to this game because the ending leaves room for a sequel    … Expand

    We're not entirely sure who's going to play this game, or even who it's ultimately suited for. People who are fans of Mikami and Suda will no doubt snap it up without a thought, and so will those who are tired of the 'usual' slew of action games. Sure, Shadows of the Damned has character and shows of incredible, grotesque and inventive beats, but as a game it's left lacking. [August 2011 p70]

    The game delivers what you might expect from two iconic developers. Unique story, plenty of grindhouse-style visuals and slightly lackluster gameplay. Fans of these auteurs will be pleased. Parents of impressionable youths will not.

    If it wasn't for the not-for-everyone grind house aesthetic of the game and the short play length, Shadows of the Damned would be a slam dunk recommendation. If you want some grindhouse and road movie in your game, this is the experience just for you. Even if you're a horror fan who's looking for something a little less serious than Dead Space of the latest F.E.A.R. title, you may just find what you're looking for here as well.
