Overall the gameplay really does feel inspired by the likes of Borderlands and Fallout 3 with a hint of a Mad Max aesthetic thrown in for good measure to anchor the post apocalyptic vibe. There are times when Rage feels a little too arcade-like and it's 'open world' is mostly a series of non linear roads or paths that lead to objectives or bad guys to shoot.

On a more positive note, Rage sports a decent amount of content, be it main missions, side missions, races and other things worth your time. There's a working economy, crafting, and you can loot people and chests/boxes for ammo or items to sell. Combat is surprisingly enjoyable and the roster of weapons is satisfying to use. What really impressed was how Rage's campaign could shift it's tone from FPS action game to horror game, especially when you first venture into the Dead City.

As Id Software's first open world game(?), Rage is a pretty good debut for a new (actually released 9 years ago) franchise. There's a lot of potential for it's elements to be refined and expanded upon in the sequel. Did I mention that John Goodman is in the game?

Unfortunately, the car combat lacks depth and the 9 co-op levels are too short. "Rage" could've been better by simply being a lengthy single player game. Regardless of its faults, this is a ridiculously entertaining action title. I would rate it with an 8.1 out of 10. Expand

Story: Original. An asteroid hits Earth in 2029, triggering a global extinction event. In anticipation of this event, several cryogenic pods have been sealed under the surface of Earth to preserve humanity. The execution of this plan goes bad unfortunately, as pods surface too long after the catastrophe happens, only to have the inhabitants be murdered by psychotic bandits. The authority, basically a self-imposed authoritarian government, are the leaders of settlements scattered around the wasteland. The awoken Marine you play as, sets out to find the resistance and awake all still dormant pods. Very interesting.

Characters: There isn't much characterisation regarding yourself or the Authority, but everyone else in this world is either a helpfull, psychopathic or out to get your money. A negative of this game is definetly the lack of a main villain representing the Authority, or characterisation of the protagonist.

Gameplay: Shooting, driving, shooting while driving, throwing boomerangs, crafting sentry guns and little gun drones that follow you. What more do you want? Feels excellent.

Atmosphere: This is a big thing in Rage as traversing the wasteland on your own can be quite intense. Especially in the dead city which is infested by mutants, or the bandit hideouts that have Murder camp enthusiasts running around in joy while trying to chop your head off. I really like the atmosphere in this game.

Content: There is a lot to do, from races to gladiator matches, minigames, exploration to gather some rare ingredients. There is however also a lot of backtracking, which fortunately is still approached with care in the mission design.

All together i was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. I give it a 9/10, which means it's an impressive game.

One of the best graphics on PS3. Atmosphere, music is awesome. FPS shooting outside and inside is great fun and environments are outstanding, this is how Fallout would look if it would be FPS. It would be much better game if it wouldn't be for the racing. That part of the game is from bearable to boring and load times are long. Still the fps adventure is one of the best I've seen. 86%

Let me begin saying that i expected this game to be similar to other Bethesda titles such as Elder Scrolls or Fallout. What i got was completly different. Theres alot of things that are good in this game, but unfortunatly there is also alot of bad additions to this title.

First lets start off with the story. The game is set in the year 2205, 106 years after the near extinction of the Human Race. Before a Asteroid hit the Earth, the Goverment established The Ark Program. Similar to Fallout in this way, the ark program made several of Vaults throughout America, but unfortunatly there was a corupt general that made it his duty to only unleash certain people from the Ark Program, i dont understand how a general can do this, but eventually he forms The Authority, a Dictator like Goverment in control of the people in the wasteland. For some reason your Ark malfunctions and you are unleashed into the wasteland to find yourself fighting alongside the resistance (actually more or less by yourself) and must help overthrow The Authority. Its a cool little plot, nothing we havent heard of before, but nice. The only problem i see with the story is the fact it wasnt as indepth or long as i expected it to be. i finished the game 7 hours in, and really if you werent paying attention, you wouldnt even know you were on the last mission.

As for the gameplay, theres alot more to talk about. first of all, theres a ton of guns at your disposal. This includes Assault Rifles, Rocket Launchers, Crossbows, Snipers, LMG's, Pistols etc. Nothing too crazy, but enough. Theres also a wide selection of ammo types for each gun. For example, you can have regular pistol ammo, or you can choose the Fatboys or Killbursts.

Theres also a decent variety of Enemy types including Bandits, Mutants, Authority Soldiers, and super mutants. Each enemy type have to be attacked differently for best results. for example, the mutants are best killed with a shotgun, to which the authority soldiers are killed the greatest with a LMG. You dont have to change your playstyle too much, but just slightly.

When it comes to the vehicle's and their uses, they play very similar to Jax and Daxter 3. They are fun to use, and race with. But the problem i saw was that there wasnt really that many important upgrades for your vehicle. There was also no use to upgrade your vehicle, most of the time, you could just zoom past your enemies without a fight on the road, which was sorta dissapointing.

The next point i want to talk about is the crafting system. throughout the game you will find many items lying around. some are just used to cash in for money, but others can help you craft items such as RC Car Bombs, Bandages, Body Infusions, and Lock Grinders. The problem with this crafting system is that none of the Craft able items really make much of the difference. The only items i crafted were the bandages and Lock Grinders. The rest were sort of pointless, unless your a really **** player, or are on a harder difficulty.

When it comes to the characters in the game, i believed that each were very unique in their own way. Although most didnt matter what so ever to the games story, or gameplay.

When it comes to the AI, i believed there were very few problems. The one problem i saw were the Boss Battles, i saw no point in having them because they were incredibly easy. One boss for example only took 3 rocket shots to kill.

One thing i must talk about that i believe the game could have changed is the Defibrillator System. In the game you have two Defib slots, basically self revive. The only way to fill them is to kill enemies, so its technically not overly OP. But i believe that they should have only given you 1 slot, or made it longer to refill. i definitely got saved by it numerous times when i should have been dead.

Another problem i saw with the game, was the high number of pointless quests. most of the time they were very quick and easy. very few times were there actually quests that proved to be lengthy and challenging. You also didnt get much rewards or incentive for doing quests other than advancing in the story.

As for the technical side of the game, i saw that the game had alot of issues. You will frequently see Texture Pop ins everywhere you go. and also when you look far distances you will see a coating or blur o your screen, it was very odd. These are minor, nothing game breaking. But they are there.

As for the multiplayer, i was very disappointed. I expected them to bring the fun center gameplay from the game to the Multiplayer, but instead they just decided to put in Vehicle Combat modes. The Multiplayer could have been alot of fun and create replay ability.

Overal i think the game was actually fun. But seeing that the game had several problems that could have been avoided, im going to have to give it a lower score. If they would have fixed the many problems i stated this could have been a 10/10. But im afraid im going to have to give it a 7/10

    I also have my criticism:
The world does not feel like a free-roam exploration world like it hints to be
and there is nearly absolutely nothing to explore outside action-determined-areas.

    Also, spoiler alert,

    the ending was highly unsatisfactory!

    But...
    Having said that,
    i will also say:

I absolutely LOVED playing this game!

    The graphics are excellent.

Game-play is very fluid, very easy to play
and difficulty is balanced throughout the game.

    And
the surroundings (in said action-determined-areas) are extremely immersive!

For the obvious pitfalls of the game, non the less:
I think Rage is a greatly detailed, highly immersive, fun, shooter!

Another disappointment was how the shooting segments are placed in corridors and it never gives you the chance to shoot enemies in the desert. You're mostly in your car the entire time you're outside but don't get me wrong the car gameplay is great and easily one of the best if not the best part of the game. Granted not perfect but obviously its combo of incredible graphics, textures, gorgeously fitting color pallet, and stunning frame rate (60fps) make it a visual masterpiece with best in class aesthetics dominating its commonly compared borderlands and fallout 3 bretheren in this department. Guns feel heavy, gunshots sound aggressive and badass, and enemies react to every shot they are hit with in a realistic way with impressively animated deaths. The animators at id software knocked it out the park with the games many fluid and jaw dropping animations, from crazed mutants ravenously coming after you, to salty bandits flailing back from gunfire ultimately spinning and falling face first to their death these animations are handled with a smoothness and degree of movement not often(if ever) seen in the video game industry. The sound shines with the vaunted John Goodman lending his voice acting talents. The game isn't short with all the side quests and loot hunting offered as well as a very arcade like but enjoyable racing and vehicle combat section (though a bit easy). The weapons are varied enough with all guns and crossbow having several different ammo types, but the clear cut star of your arsenal is the innovative and devilishly fun wing stick. The wing stick is a type of three bladed boomerang that you throw at your enemies for frequent decapitations and severed limbs, it also can be upgraded to target enemies,do more damage, and return to your hand like a boomerang (did i mention it can slice the head off of multiple enemies in a row). You also find or buy blueprints in the wasteland which build new weapons/guns, upgradable turrets and robots, and even a mini remote controlled truck with bombs attached to it which you can remote detonate (also useful for scouting out enemy camps). You do however rehash the same levels at times with minor differences but with having to make such detailed landscapes it's understandable. The game includes many enjoyable mini games such as five finger fillet, a guitar hero like game called strum, and a very fun card game similar to magic the gathering with picture cards of different in game characters and factions that you find throughout the wasteland to strengthen your deck(trust me i am not a card or magic t.g. fan but this is fun). The world isn't as big as fallout but it is as big as it needs to be.It has a fun but not as varied separate coop campaign and online multiplayer in the form of exciting vehicle combat races. I know it isn't the 4 player coop of borderlands but unless you are the type who is compulsive about having 50,000 guns and cell shaded graphics it might be a better all around game than the first borderlands(i do love borderlands by the way). People say Rage doesn't have a story and it has an "okay" if not fleshed out enough story but borderlands though it is entertaining has basically no story at all(you are on pandora- now find this vault). Some found Rage to have a weak ending? Not half as dissapointing as borderlands ending (can anyone say they were pleased with what they found in the vault?) Overall Rage is a breath of fresh air that beckons back to id's yesteryear of gaming (doom, quake) the combat is in your face and aggressive differing from this generation's Gears of Wear totally cover based pop and shoot style of combat (when i am a badass muscle bound space marine i don't want to spend 75% of the game on my knees, i know a few gals who hangout on the corner they can give marcus pheonix a pair of kneepads they spend alot of time on their knees too).Rage has a ton of nostalgic eastereggs too, if you are a Doom, wolfenstein, Quake or id fan you need to get this game for the eastereggs alone! I won't spoil it but let's just say these eastereggs are very.....interactive. The sad thing is that Rage2 was in the works but seeing how Rage undersold they cancelled production and killed the would be series. This was new IP from the fathers of FPS and after all that time they delivered, and after getting their feet wet in this generation with Rage i can assume building on Rage's engine and the experience with Rage would have prepped them to deliver even bigger on Rage2 (can you imagine what that game would of looked like.) Rage is a very strong game and worth the experience it should have sold 5mil. Rage gets a 9 out of 10. Expand

As for the negatives: During certain cut scenes the audio breaks, which can be annoying. The characters you meet will sometimes suffer from the age old "audio out of sync with lip movements" problem which is, to say the least, irritating. Finally, the textures load very slowly in this game. As soon as you look in a new direction, the objects near you will start to load their textures, somewhat breaking the immersion.

Technical issues aside, Rage is a blast to play, outside and inside your vehicle, much thanks to the awesome shooting mechanics. If you like post-apocalypse, this is a game for you!

Rage has some excellent moments and some rather dull ones. This will appeal to the majority of FPS fans as its a very good game. However, the game has a few too many dull missions that might try and make you not want to come back to the game. This is the reason Rage isn't as any where near as good as Crysis 2. The shooting here is exceptional though and feels realistic. A very good gameRage has some excellent moments and some rather dull ones. Rage recently entered the $20 (AUD) bargain bin making this one of the best value game purchases available.. Rage is a great first person shooter, that takes elements from all over the place, it isn't quite sure what it wants to be, but does a pretty good job of being a jack of all trades game..
It looks good, it sounds good, and it plays fantastically, the only reason for a rating below

Cost me £5 for the Anarchy Edition and its a great game very similar to Borderlands but with superior shooting from id , the AI from the enemy is a pleasure to experience.
First thing i did was max up the sensitivity and yes i noticed the texture pop up but you know what........it still looks and amazing and runs faster than a rocket.
    Negative comment - Multiplayer..........fun

I did enjoy RAGE alot to be fair, granted, it isn't long like the other games created, but, it adds a little twist to it, as opposed to swords, spells etc, Good racing tracks/computers, Guns and Bigger Guns!

For a game developed for 8-10 year old hardware this was still a poor effort. Some nice concepts that in no way compensate for what feels like a mash up of other peoples games. Bloody awful at release and still unplayable for now if you are used to any present generation PC FPS. It felt old but not in any sort of classic, pleasant reminiscence sort of way.. Expand

Ultimately, RAGE is soulless and short-lived. Jack up the difficulty for more of a challenge, but underneath a few stand-out moments is a shooter that's been outclassed and out gunned. [Dec 2011, p78]

There is not a lot of leveling or depth to be found in Rage, but you can have some fun with building your own weapons and toying around with several gadgets. We particularly liked the remote controlled cars that can be equipped with explosives. [Nov 2011, p.82]

A weak, aimless story and limited freedom to explore betray the fun, varied and creative combat in this beautiful post-apocalyptic wasteland. [Christmas 2011, p.104]
