As for the PS3 port, it's about on the same level as Mass Effect 2 was in terms of performance. You get the usual lack of anti-aliasing and some dodgy framerate during fights, but for the most part it's pretty solid. I'd previously played ME1 on PC, and going through it on console really hammers home just how much they improved all aspects of the moment-to-moment gameplay in the sequel. Just as well that there's plenty of delicious dialogue trees to dive into and uncharted worlds to explore (albeit in that sodding... bouncing.. truck.. thing...)

If you can stand the load times, it's definitely worth adding this to your collection to see how it all began, before playing the vastly more fun and epic sequels.

Nice story, nice gameplay and overall a pretty nice experience. Nothing revolutionizing though and if it hadn't been for the other games in the series i probably wouldn't have played it more than once.

Mass Effect deserves nothing short of a 10. Sure this game is old with outdated graphics and average gameplay but so was the original Metal Gear Solid. Like Metal Gear Solid, Mass Effect is the beginning of one of the most prestigious gaming experience to ever come to videogames. The PS3 version of Mass Effect does play better than the XBOX 360 version with little to no frame rate issues, faster load times, and with the same control scheme as the 360 I have found that Mass Effect is more comfortable to play than its sequels. For PS3 owners finally being able to meet and interact with characters you've only seen in the sequels will make you come to respect and care for them (which is a trait absent from most games today) even if you don't know what part they will play in your future experience. In Mass Effect you can choose to be a hero or a badass who likes to get things done the easy way, but the easy way might lead to future consequences. In Mass Effect your choices are your own, the way you act to shipmates, whether you show mercy to a fallen foe or fill them with enough plasma to pop a tank, to whether you are a male or female Shepard with a tragic past, and deciding whether helpless people should be saved or sacrificed. I have never played a better videogame trilogy, this trilogy that will make you laugh, cry, and scream for just one more character to chat with, another alien to blast into oblivion, or another planet to explore. Mass Effect is for videogames as Star Wars is for movies as the Lord of the Rings is for books and as the Mona Lisa is for art. The journey through Mass Effect has been THE greatest videogame experience that I have ever had, no other series (except Metal Gear Solid) has come close to topping this trilogy, and none ever will. The journey everyone must experience starts here with Mass Effect. Expand

I was overjoyed when ME2 came to the PS3 and enjoyed it thoroughly (I still own my original copy) and ME3 came along (which I enjoyed thoroughly, it's the greatest futuristic epic in all of gaming) but I always felt like I missed out not playing ME. When it finally released on PS3 I bought it immediately and let me say....I enjoyed it thoroughly. Technically speaking ME is rather primitive in many ways compared to ME2 whcih is to be expected given that ME2 is an evolution from ME. That should be taken as a given but should it scare interested people away? Not at all. ME graphically runs on an older engine (PS3 owners are really spoiled here, our version of ME2 ran on the same engine as ME3 which is why it's better looking than the 360 version) which is interesting insomuch as comparing it to other offerings of 2006-07 and it is clearly superior to Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, etc.- in many ways it still holds up well. ME is a good deal shorter than ME2 as well but there again is the benefit of evolution; ME2 was also built to be more immersive in its storytelling (in the same way Uncharted 2 evolved from Uncharted). Those are the negatives for a 5 year old game just now getting released: it's technologically inferior and less immersive overall. The controls are also spotty and the cover mechanic is again inferior to successive entries.

This being said ME is an experience any series fan should have as it accomplishes something only people who started with ME2 can truly appreciate: completeness. When I started a new game on ME I immediately felt fully initiated to Mass Effect; ME2 suddenly had a greater context and more drama to it than ever before. The Sheppard you create in ME is someone you grow with- his/her friendship with Wrex or Garrus or Tali suddenly has great depth. Decisions made in the graphic novel version of ME2 always felt like a "choose your own adventure" book which gave the game a "drop in" quality leaving a PS3 owner to feel slightly dislocated from characters and events that carry over into ME2 which was previously a downside in regards to immersion. When you play the series in chronological order events that can result in picking and choosing who dies take on a new dimension. This is the main reason to own and play Mass Effect: experiencing the story hollistically and even though in many ways it is primitive compared to successive games overall it still delivers top-notch entertainment value. Also the PS3 version of Mass Effect has all of the DLC built in which is a bonus; previously XBox 360 owners had to pay for it seperately. The final verdict is if you approach Mass Effect like its an extension of the gameplay from ME2 or 3 you'll be disappointed. But if you approach the game based upon its own merits with the idea of experiencing a luxury previously restricted to 360 owners you'll be pleasantly surprised. Finally, if you're someone like me and you want to see how log running NPCs such as Tali, Garrus, Liara, Wrex and/ or Ashley and Kaiden Alenko became veteran acquaintances of Cmd. Sheppard you'll enjoy this game. Finally if you want to understand how the story unfolds you really need to play all three to totally enjoy the gem of this generation that is Mass Effect.

After that, loads of RPGs and action RPGs on PC, like Diablo I and II, Baldur's Gate II, FFVII and many others. With this introduction I want to say that I have some experience in the *real* RPGs and Mass Effect I is one of the best of the best, maybe the best PC action RPG that I've played, together with Diablo I.

The RPG elements are all there, like the level progression, the incredible plot, the choices and the consequences, an astounding soundtrack and sound effects (I CAN'T forget the ringing sound that plays some times, haha). So, to sum up, it's an unforgetable game and experience.

I've finished it 5 times and now is the time for a new game, on the hardest but this time I have no hurry in finishing that. My intention is to enjoy this precious jewel in all its rarity. So rare that the sequences aren't worth even the name "sequence".

No doubt is in your mind as you take your first step into the great unknown of a new adventure. When Mass Effect's title screen first appeared, and I heard the beautiful galactic overture that now rests on my iPod whenever I need it, I knew that I was in for an unbelievable ride.
Mass Effect is an amazing game from start to finish and quite possibly my favorite RPG of all time. You play Commander Shepard, a military hero who has just been promoted to an elite group of crime-fighters known as the Specters. Your first mission is to find a rogue agent named Saren, not only uncovering his diabolical plans for the Citadel but also establishing faith in the human race. The greatest aspect of the game is the way your decisions impact the narrative. Every conversation and choice you make impacts the way your crew views you, as well as the rest of the galaxy. You can be a peace-seeking hero who resolves conflicts with words before fists or a ruthless renegade who decimates anyone or anything in his path. While it would have been nice to have a middle ground (it is imperative that you choose one side or the other in order to unlock crucial conversation options) or even a system of conversing where the good and bad options weren't spelled out for you (like in the Walking Dead), Mass Effect makes you feel in the driver's seat. This is YOUR story, and your friends will live or die based on your decisions.
Combat is engaging and fully functional. There are very few fighting bugs ad each battle, whether it be drones or reanimated human corpses called Husks, is a blast. One of the greatest features of the game is the amount of depth in its customization mode. Everything you own, from your armor to your weapon to the bullets that you fire, can be changed and traded based on your personal preference. While tedious at times, the result is an added sense of immersion that makes you feel like you are your own unique soldier.
In addition, your interactions with your allies are impeccably done. Each character feels real in its own right and each difficult choice you make throughout the game has a visible impact on each one. You can even romance one of your crewmates in genuinely touching scenes of affection, all of which carries over into the next installment.
Despite all these incredible features, Mass Effect does carry drawbacks. Side missions and planetary exploration on your little rover is incredibly dull and repetitive. Each base is a carbon copy of the last and there is little variety between each mission. In addition, the system of currency in the game is beyond broken. Since you keep each individual piece of equipment you come across, you can sell a majority of your inventory for an easy profit, thereby allowing you to buy the best weapons in the game early on. On top of all this, the characters themselves are, for the most part, bland. Apart from Garrus, Tali, and Liara, the rest of the game's characters left no impact on my expedition. In fact, during one scene I had to choose between two of the characters who I felt no attachment to, feeling like a missed opportunity since it could have featured an extremely difficult decision rather than a flip of the coin. Also, the PS3 port has strange graphical problems such as awkward textures and downright bizarre facial animations.
Nearly all of these bugs are excusable when you see the finished result. Mass Effect is a timeless space odyssey that will make you really think about the impact you want to leave on this world. The choices you make travel throughout the rest of the trilogy, so each saved life and bullet fired means a lot in the long run. So be prepared when boarding the Normandy. You are in for a journey that lives or dies with you, and never before has the weight of the galaxy rested on your shoulders. Good luck.

Weapon Customization returns in Mass Effect 3 but for some reason they never went back to the ability to customize your squad in the ways you could in ME1. The Mechanics and gameplay can get clunky at times but you get used to it as the story progresses, the story itself is pretty good and the romances are the best in the series with none of the favoritisms toward a specific LI like you see in ME3. Mass Effect, well at first i'm totally not interested in it. I mean, lots of alien races? space stuffs? Those things are serious and i'm afraid i can't really understand any of it. But luckily this game changed my point of view. We play as John Shepherd, you can choose your background for your characters, i chose to be the War Hero. You were a commander in a fleet called Normandy, the most advanced ship in the earth colony. Your first mission is to retrieve a beacon from a long lost races` technology. Saren, A Spectre, a commando unit directly under the council, betrayed them, and try to bring the Reaper, an alien races that annihilated lots of planet before. Saving this world, no..the galaxy from Saren is your mission now.

    Plus point:
    - This game is really fresh for me. I mean yes it's a 3rd person shooting game, but it is an RPG too. And you can have like a lot of Skills.
    - The story is epic, i mean yeah saving the galaxy from a mean Alien? That's just badass.
But that's all. This game is good, but without any strong points other than the story.
    - Sometimes the choices are really hard. And you really have to choose & act by your nature, that's the best way to dealt with the situation. Like who are you going to save and stuffs. Those choices will really affect the storyline. But not all of it, only some.

    Minus Point:
    - This game is kinda boring. I mean the sub mission is repetitive. You went to a planet, you ride the Mako, Explore, Kill all enemies, quest finished! And there are just too many of this kind of mission. Takes a lot of times to finish each of it.
    - Choices doesn't really change the way the game goes. Well of course there are Renegade and Paragon points which define what kind of hero you are, but that's all. I mean you gave us 3 choices but it doesn't really change the way Shepherd react to it. I mean what he said and the choices sometimes doesn't fit at all. Which is totally weird.

I'm just finishing the first game and going for the 2nd one. Considering the game has a good story, i kinda recommend it to a sci-fi fans.

If the score seems too low, just keep in mind that I'm reviewing this specific version of the game. So if you've never played Mass Effect and the most convenient place for you to play it is on your Playstation 3, here's what's in store for you:

The game is great, and rightly praised for kicking off one of the most iconic series in gaming. But even with rose-colored glasses of nostalgia, the game stands on its own merits. The futuristic world presented is compelling and thoughtful, and most importantly believable. The story contained is interesting and unique, but not devoid of humor and levity. And the gameplay, as far as can be hoped for an early cover-shooter, holds up fairly well and is properly balanced to provide a challenge but not present too many difficulty speed bumps along the way.

But not everything in the game has stood the test of time. Unfortunately, most of the things in this category are things related to game design and you'll likely encounter them throughout the entire playthrough. The most egregious are the lack of inventory management and the lack of variety in environments. Just get used to the fact that almost every place outside of a handful will look almost identical to any other place you visit. And be ready to spend a few minutes thinning out your inventory after missions or you'll soon find yourself having to organize 150 frustratingly-similar items in one of the worst U.I.s in recent memory. The checkpoint system isn't a deal-breaker, but a few times it partners with unskippable cutscenes and difficult fights to become extremely frustrating.
Other minor annoyances are more forgivable, such as the game ambushing you occasionally even if your character has been warned about a location or even told exactly what you'll encounter there. And if you wanna get down to it, the action (shooting portions) are not really well done, but if you're even considering playing a game from 2007 you should already be prepared to be forgiving.

However, with that being said, it's a little harder to forgive the awfulness of this PS3 port, which released after the trilogy was completed. It's not optimized at all, so this version has the honor of having the worst framerates, longest loading times, and slowest-loading textures. This is hands-down the worst way to experience one of the best games ever made. But like I said, if you're patient and forgiving the game is playable. And the two sequels are really great, so once you finish this game you have a pretty sweet reward waiting for you.

First, I'll start with the things I like about this game compared to the others. First of all, this game is extremely fun to play as a biotic. The powers are good and they work how they should. Also, each power has it's own recharge time, so you can almost constantly be using your powers. I've also played through the game as a soldier, which was fun, but I didn't find it as enjoyable as the biotic playthrough. This game definitely feels more like an RPG than ME2 and ME3, some ways are good, some ways are bad. First of all, I prefer the combat without the thermal clips. It makes the game feel more unique. Secondly, I like how much you can explore places like the Citadel. I also prefer this level up system to the other two games'. The first negative element is that the game has much worse graphics than ME2 and ME3. Secondly, the combat isn't as smooth. Another problem is that after missions you often have to run all the way back to the Normandy, which is annoying, (See Noveria). The inventory system is a mess. It wouldn't be a problem if there wasn't a limit, but there is and it's annoying to have to clear it out. Overall though, the game is good. You can definitely tell BioWare cleaned up ME2 and ME3 when compared to this game, unfortunately in some areas they cut out a little too much, but the series as a whole is really good. Expand

I'm glad Bioware decided to bring ME1 to the PS3 after all these years. The story is great and the graphics still hold up well for a 2007 game. I too was frustrated at first, but once you get past the rough edges it becomes an incredibly enjoyable experience. The story is well told and the sound and visuals are stunning. The gameplay is a healthy mix of FPS and RPG, even though at times I found this mix to be somewhat overdone. At times when the game needs to be a shooter, it tries too hard too hard to be an RPG and vice versa during other times. This becomes obvious during boss battles, wich for spoiler's sake I won't talk too much about but let's just say they feel lacking, even at harder difficulties. My biggest gripe with the game however isn't so much a problem with mass effect itself, it's with the developper/publisher. I don't know if this is due to the PS3 or the game itself but let me make one thing clear: if you want a smooth and bug free experience, do NOT play this game on PS3. Either go for the 360 version or better yet, play the PC version, it will save you a lot of frustration. This game (along with other bioware titles I've played on PS3 in the past) has caused my PS3 to freeze on numerous occasions, and while a simple reboot fixes this in most cases, there is nothing more aggravating than losing every shred of progress you've made due to the game crashing (I had to beat the final boss on insanity difficulty 3 times before I got through the entire ending without crashing...). Truly horrid coding on Bioware's part. Nevertheless I applaud this game, bugs and bad coding isn't the game's fault and won't affect my score in the slightest, I just hope the next installment of the franchise has better performance on PS3. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Of course Bioware would eventually bundle the mass effect games together and finally have the first mass effect game imported to the ps3. They wanted to piss me off and have me spend more money of the mass effect 2 and 3 games separate first before having me spend half of what I paid for those 2 separate games on the complete set, knowing that I would pay for the whole trilogy because I love it so much and I finally get to experience the first game. Luckily they have a digital copy of it online, I guess it wasn't all bad. RIGHT?

+Well, what can I say about the game, the story is set as the beginning of Commander Shepard's rise to glory, the introduction to the Mass Effect universe, as well as the introduction to your companions. So the storyline is solid. +Game play wise it's not as refined as the ME2; for example the sprinting seems random at times and the enemy AI is borderline annoying to stupid, however it's still an enjoyable shooting game. +The RPG aspect is really good; customization of armor and weapons plus a lot more to class skill tree than in ME2 and ME3; like how certain classes has the ability to increase the chances of opening containers or hack electronic equipments. I now understand that the RPG aspect for the latter installments really got dumb down for the more action packed shooting aspect of the game. +The ending and the end boss was also solid, except for the whole being shot in the head twice and still coming back to live and try to kill you. (So if the first two installment have a boss battle, how come the third installment didn't?) +Also, patches from Bioware gave PS3 Mass Effect games the function to import properly from beginning to end and ignore the need for the Dark Horse Comic book in Mass Effect 2. -Now granted this game is not without its' flaw, the glitches in this game can be really annoying to down right game breaking, luckily for me the glitches only happen once in my play through(really early in the game and not midway). -The freaking slow frame rate for the skin materials to appear on the character model can be really annoying, but hey, if I can kind of tolerate the messed up sync of the audio and the visual in Mass Effect 2, I can kind of tolerate the messed up frame rate in this game. -I cannot believe I would ever want to play through the vehicle stages from the second installment, over the mandatory vehicle stages covering almost halve of the game. Now I do like this terrain tank more than the hover craft in the second installment, since I can still save while in the tank, it takes more hit, and wields a secondary weapon. However, it is still too much, too many. -Finally, this game is only for the ps3 owners who wanted the whole experience of playing through Mass Effect from beginning to end. It doesn't offer anything new to the players that already played through the trilogy from beginning to end. No new weapon, no new armor, no new mission, no new characters, no new cut scenes, etc,. -In fact, not all the dlc from the XBOX version got imported into the PS3 version.

I thought I should try Mass Effect, and as I saw the trilogy in offer in PlayStation Store, why not jump in? Maybe buying it on this platform this way wasn't the best idea.
The Ps3 version of ME is unfortunately, not as polished and detailed as the PC or Xbox versions. Some glitches, bugs and textures can be passed, some can not. The game, still, is visually impressive. Sometimes, breathtaking sights from an asteroid to an unknown planet pop out and I simply awe, amazed. But Mass Effect's visuals are another page. The main thing (Or at least at the trilogy, as the first entry didn't deliver as much) is the story, or even further, the decisions. Mass Effect's story feels like a summer blockbuster from beginning to end, but with some REALLY tough choices to make in the middle that change your story. Sometimes, I've spent 20 minutes trying to figure out the pros and cons of each choice. The story delivers for its duration. Mass Effect isn't really as long as they sey. You have both Primary and Secondary missions. Doing only Primary missions will take you about 12 hours only. Doing the Secondary and Exploring will extend your gameplay further, around 30 hours. Unfortunately, the secondary missions are ridiculously similar: Although some are effective and enjoyable (Mostly DLC), most of them feel like doing the same thing in a place with a different skin, or scavenging for cheap collectibles. The worst thing is that ones you complete the primary missions, you can't go back to complete the remaining assignments. Its a big detail. I played through the game for 24 hours completing most of the assignments, except the ones you have to collect stuff. I really wanted to complete them, but I finished all primary missions, and the game made me start everything all over again. This was also positive, as I could make different decisions and see their outbacks, although watching everything again is a little bit unappealing.
Now, something really arguable about the game is the Gameplay. You may found it confusing at first, and half the game beaten, you will start getting used to it. That's because ME's gameplay isn't polished or well-explained. They basically tell you "Shoot Stuff" but that's not all you have to do. During the game, you gather XP points so then you can upgrade skills (And skills of your squad) and those skills unlock different kind of super-powers for battle. Some of this super-powers are great. Some others are awfully unuseful. The game also presents three difficulties at first (Casual, Normal and Hard) and then unlocks two alternative modes (Hardcore and Insanity). I've found challenge only in the alternative modes and found the original difficulties incredibly easies. Some boss battles (Of the few) pushed me to limits once, but never twice. ME was meant to be played on Hard, and if you want some more spice, push yourself to the alternative modes (Specially Hardcore, as Insanity feels more as a bugged, unfair mode).
At first, I wasn't convinced at all about Mass Effect. The buggy Ps3 version, the piece-of-cake difficulty and the clunky gameplay made me feel lost in the dazzle of the game. It is when you get the game when it truly shines, although never achieving the heights of its sequel and sequel's sequel. Mass Effect is a game you can play if you want, but will not harm you if pass out this one in the trilogy. It was fun ride, but I had a bitter taste hard to wash since the beginning

I arrived with a delay of eight years to play this game, but recently (knowing the prestige it had) I played and finished the whole trilogy.

It must be said right away: with Mass Effect, BioWare has created a fantastic universe, with many facets, articulate but at the same time consistently; inspired and with many references to series like Star Trek and Star Wars. In other words BioWare deserves an Oscar just for this. Personally I found the story of Mass Effect incredibly beautiful, it catches you from the first minute. Characters, protagonists and antagonists, each have their own personality, their own history, and relations that are created with each of them manage to make the background of the plot even more beautiful, more complex. A praise for creating characters like Saren and the Reapers, who are truly ones of the most beautiful I've ever seen.

At first glance, Mass Effect, might look like a common third-person shooter and nothing more. But actually what BioWare did was to create an hybrid blend with the genre of rpg, creating in fact one of the best of games of this genre. This fusion of genres has managed to perfection: the gameplay is deep and fun, with inventory, statistics, weapons and armor, upgrades, abilities, exploration of planets and recovery of minerals. Even the editor to create the character Shepard at the beginning is well structured and offers many choices, both in terms of physical appearance and customization of the story of the character as the place of origin, the psychological profile, the class and the skills that result. The dialogue system is very well done and convenient to use, the choices really change the course of story, and Paragon & Renegade moral points add something significant to the vision that Shepard gives of himself. The longevity of the game is great, from 20 to beyond 30 hours. Nothing is missing, there is everything and it works perfectly.

The graphic is pretty good and appreciable, even the artistic level is great and very cinematographical. Not bad also the game soundtrack. Unfortunately, at least for the PlayStation 3 version, the game is unstable from the technical point of view: there are many bugs, and sometimes the game causes a freezing of the console, but afterall this is forgettable because of all that the game has to give.

Mass Effect is certainly one of the highest points of BioWare, and one of its best games. A great rpg-game, and a masterpiece.

It's funny, finally playing and completing Mass Effect after having already thoroughly enjoyed 2 and 3 (2 being my favourite game of all time) made me truly appreciate what I love most about this trilogy: the characters, the dialogue and the story.

Sure, there's an entire universe that Bioware has created, with detailed backstories for every single race, planet and bureaucratic component (in which you can easily lose yourself when you're learning about them for the first time). However, what makes Mass Effect as a trilogy distinctive is the attachment you develop to your squad as you complete missions and talk with them. Like 2 and 3, the greatest strength of Mass Effect is its story. Though I experienced Bioware's fully realized product in the latter two games, I enjoyed properly learning how Shepard's story began. Almost every single conversation was worthwhile, and every character was interesting in some way, and that includes more than just the squad and the Normandy's crew. The game had me fully immersed for nearly all of its 30 hours.

The gameplay is generally a success. Again, the sequels are superior in this category, so the learning (ergo enjoyment) curve was all the more steep for me. It took me a solid 5 or 6 hours to properly get the hang of shooting and pausing and using the biotic power and shooting and pausing and shooting, etc., etc. Once I did, and once my weapons began to get more powerful, I found the combat to be solid. The cover mechanic, though perhaps unorthodox, is passable. The greater level of weapon variety and customization is nice, but the organization of all the weapons and weapon upgrades felt cluttered, especially when I had to sell all of the obsolete material or convert it to omni-gel.

The flaws? First of all, there are technical problems galore in Mass Effect. This is indeed a recurring issue in 2 and 3, but not nearly to this extent. The framerate drops pretty consistently, the graphics hiccup and render slowly every time a new environment is loaded. There was even one instance where I was stuck in combat mode when I was supposed to be engaged in dialogue with a malevolent character. I re-loaded the save, but the character did not appear again (some kind of glitch, I'm sure). Lip-syncing is pretty dodgy. Most of the time, these issues are negligible, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't detract from the gaming experience.

Then there's the exploration. This cost the game at least a point for me. Visually, the planets may seem different from one another, but they're all really quite similar. I learned to cope with the Mako, but I never truly enjoyed driving it. The controls were frustrating and its weapons often aimed in strange directions. Exploration as a whole is quite bland. You are dropped in the middle of nowhere on the planet and are required to navigate to a few significant points on the map. Some interesting things are collected along the way, but I found ME's "looting" mechanic to be better implemented in later games, when you are simply picking things up as you move, on foot, through the mission. The buildings you enter while on these planets also vary minimally; it really does feel like your going to the same places and doing the same things over and over again. These side-quests began to feel like chores as the final mission was approaching.

All of Mass Effect's flaws are very well compensated by its fantastic story. Stuff like this makes me want to write science fiction novels for a living. And, though I consider the "ME1 has the best story of the trilogy" statement to be an unfair slight to the next two games, it is an undeniable strength and I believe that even today, 8 years after the game was initially released, it should be considered the standard by which all other plot-driven games must live up to.

The most obvious of which is the shoehorned in RPG mechanics. Menus require single step navigation and don't allow you to zoom to where you need to go. I must have spent hours just trying to sort, trash, and equip the proper gear to the proper weapons and armor on the proper squad member. It was interesting and intriguing at first as the equips became increasingly creative, but it quickly got tiring and by the time you reach the carrying limit, it is nothing more than time consuming.

This shows a lot of promise. Especially in the fields of facial animation, worldbuilding, and story, as well as some pretty amazing voice acting to follow. But it's short length and abrupt ending pull you out of the action far too soon Only to redirect you to boring and repetitive side missions that are truly a grind.

As a first entry in a new third party IP, it's definitely above average, and with a little work on streamlining equipment management, between-level design, a little added length, and cutting down to get to the meat of what this game is really about, the rest of the franchise could be far superior.

Mass Effect is a game that has different contrasting flavors, doing what it does well with pride and confidence, but also holding itself back with a few too many clunky features. The lore was so good that I had many good discussions with friends and read many articles in the Mass Effect Wiki. You have also a codex in each game where you can look up things for more details. Then they had a unique idea for the Mass Effect games. You can import your decisions into the next games. This was as interesting as impactful. Many of us had again so good discussions and arguments what the best course of action was or which outcome the decisions will have. There were a lot of mayor and some minor decisions that gave you different results in the follow up games (Think not of 2 different games / paths. It is more of an adaptation in the story, options and outcomes). But back to the game. You play as Commander Shepard as he/she is on the way to become the first human Spectre (An agent with huge competences and authorities) for the Citadel Council (Like the united nations but consisting of representatives of the 3 most powerful / influential species). During the story you discover a huge secret and a treat that can endanger the whole galaxy. I will stop here because of spoilers but will say the story is fantastic soap opera material. The side quest are also good and deepen the lore with good stories. A game like this is only as good as its characters. This is BioWares magic. They created so much fan favourite characters that it was often a hard choice which teammate we should pick. Each one had his own motivations, world-views and stories. My favourites are Liara T’Soni, Garrus Vakarian and Urknot Wrex for the teammates. For the NPCs I like Joker, David Anderson and Steven Hacket. All three of them earned my respect. For the gameplay you get a hybrid of RPG and shooter (More of a real time RPG with guns). You can of cause chose different classes with different abilities. You will acquire new equipment and level up your abilities as you rise in level. I will admit that the combat is not as polished as it should be but still fun to play. You can later explore planets via vehicle which I like (Was a weak-point for many and got removed for the sequels). The other main complaint was that the weapons have a heat system. You have unlimited ammunition but if you fire your weapons to often(in a short time) it will overheat and stop functioning for a short time. I find it a good mechanic but can understand the critic (Got also removed from Sequels). Lets go to the final evaluation: It is a fantastic starting point for a new IP and worth owning. I enjoyed this game a lot and will give 1 bonus point for world building / lore. Critical warning: It is my duty to warn you of the conclusion of the trilogy in Mass Effect 3. Before I planed to replay all games to get my favourite outcomes. After it I haven't touched the games again (I am the kind of gamer that replays his favourite games once in a while). I wont go in details but it was even in the mainstream media. For details the famous YouTuber Angry Joe has made a list what is wrong with the ending. Expand

I am The Destroyer. I will break games, complain about the littlest detail, and tell you whether or not the game is worth buying. A lot of things to say, but can't due to the 5000 character limit. I will not be giving it a 2007 PC baby booster because ultimately people what to know what to spend their money on. PS3's release was in 2012 and as such will be judged by those standards.

A lot of things to say, but can't due to the 5000 character limit. I will not be giving it a 2007 PC baby booster because ultimately people what to know what to spend their money on. PS3's release was in 2012 and as such will be judged by those standards.

    1. Story
Plain & simple: you are Commander Shepard. Your task is to stop Seren before he finds the Conduit and brings back an alein-machine race known as the Reapers. The story has you so involved, Shepard themselves won't speak unless you pick a dialogue option. It's a comfortable approach because it allows the gamer to progress through the story at their own pace. Now granted some of the choices don't exactly fit with what will actually come out of Shepard's mouth, and some of the choices will lead to them saying the same thing anyway. But I promise it will try to reel you in.

    2. Voice Acting
What you'll love about this game is that even the unimportant side characters get voice overs instead of generic subtitles. Some voices are the same but it won't matter. I hope other companies follow this example and do this with their future games, especially for RPG and JRPG games. Voices overall are passable.

    3. Graphics and Visuals
There are some beautiful sites, but the graphics overall are nasty, and you have low-rez loading to thank for it. When entering new areas or beginning cut-scenes, characters and objects are still pixel-ating themselves. And when they are loaded it all looks like it's made of clay. 5 years later and Bioware doesn't even try to smooth them out.

    4. Gameplay
Gameplay refers to it's battle system, customization & level up, and the Mako driving. Put it all together and it's a mix of good & bad.

    -Battle System-
The combat follows more of an RPG element than action ordinate. Headshots do the same damage as legshots, so its more about who has bigger numbers for damage & resistance. Don't play the higher difficulties at level 1!!!
Shotguns have ridiculous range in this game. Only bad thing is sometimes the game stops you in the middle of combat just to load everything.

    -Customization-
So much customization here for your class, weapons, and the points you can distribute when you level up. It's very generous, and deserves phrase it for letting you play how you wanna play. Inventory might be a mess though.

    -Mako-
Here is value begins to deteriorate. The Mako, tank that you drive, is overpowered; the XP penalty won't stop people from using it. After driving across 3 empty boring planets you won't give a **** about the sidequests any more, as the vehicle feels like its moving in slow motion. Vehicle variety would have been nice.

    5. Soundtrack
There are a few memorable tunes in this game but overall the soundtrack isn't that great. Some of the music sounds exactly the same, never changing tones or notes from it's previous song. Even the good tunes just become background music. Now you can argue and say that these songs add to it's Sci-Fi atmosphere, but it's doubtful you'll be downloading any of them onto your Ipad soon.

    6. Bugs Crashes
Nobody is safe. Here's the list of bugs you will (not might) encounter on your playthrouygh(s). Only game ruining bugs will be listed.

    - The Mako can randomly get stuck though the map while driving. After 15 seconds you'll break free, only to teleport to a random part of the map including out-of-bounds zones which results in instant death.
    - Game randomly crashes during a loading screen after you do enough sidequests (punishing anyone who wants the Platinum trophy.)
    - The power trophies for Engineer and Adapt are bugged and may not unlock no matter how many times you use your powers.
    - Eden Prime has a red screen of death! You will enter a cut-scene, and then suddenly see your screen covered in redness. This results in 1 of 3 things after the scene is over: either everything will go back to normal, you will still be stuck with the red screen of death forcing you to reload a save, or the game will randomly crash!
    - Your squadmates are poorly programmed during hostile environments. I have witnessed them attack walls for 15 minutes when there were no enemies around. They constantly get in your way when you have to backtrack through a level. Squadmates will sometimes ignore your orders and do whatever they please. Finally the worst one, Wrex will randomly disappear during missions as if he was never in your squad to begin with, reducing your squad to just you and 1 other person.
    - After completing a main mission and then returning for a debrief, sometimes the cut-scene will skip before starting as if it never happened.

    7. Personal Enjoyment
    7 Playthoughs!!!

    8. Overall Verdict
PS3 verdict is 7 of 10. If you love guns and RPG then this is your game. If not then pick it up anyway because it's worth running though at least once especially now that the price has gone down.

The teammates are really good (the contrary of resident evil revelation partners, who are always useless), more than we wish, and ussually they kill 80% of the hostiles, and quickly, while you are at the first or second one. So i had always let them far away from where action took place. Now, when playing with your char, the aim is not good, very unprecise, or too fast, or too slow, being impossible to hit flying enemies. the power slots wheel is terrible and sometimes misundestands what you have chosen and breaks the pace, the heat of the fight. I had seen videos of the pc version, and that wheel was much better implemented (actually is not a wheel, is just disposed side by side at the top of the screen). Expand

And the result: a classic that forever changed gaming in 2007.

Mass Effect can debate-ably be considered Canada's biggest important of the 21st Century; at least in multimedia storytelling which the franchise has since gone on to 'effect'.

Commander Shepard, The Reapers, Garrus, Tali, Urdnot Wrex have all gotten well-deserved love and respect from gamers everywhere. Mass Effect is a special franchise that feels like it's always been there in the background.

I never really hopped onto the train of Mass Effect fans when the Mass Effect series first got popular because I couldn't really see why it had so much popularity. I feel bad for doubting this game.

Gameplay in Mass Effect is typical to any sort of RPG by Bioware. The gameplay is a blend of dialogue and talking to people, third person shooting and exploring tons of different planets in tons of different galaxies. I was amazed by the shear size of Mass Effect, 8 different galaxies with around 5 or more in each and each planet feels unique and I don't think it is just a copy and paste of different planet. The character customization of Commander Sheppard, even though it's limited in some areas, I find is well done where you can customize your appearance to make him be as ugly as you want and you can even customize his backstory. What makes the character customization of backstories even better is that characters will have different dialogue responses depending on your choice of backstory. Most of the gameplay feature are good but I do have a couple of complaints. The third person shooting mechanics aren't that well done. They aren't terrible, they aren't on the scale of being unplayable but it feels like the third person shooter segments were just added in as an after thought and it took me alot of getting used to. The second and final problem I have with the gameplay is the karma system. One thing that I'm not too fond of in RPGs (despite RPGs being my favourite genre of video games) is the karma systems some off these games have) I like to build my character, now knowing if the choice that I just made was good or bad or Ilike to make a bad choice if I'm in abad or annoying situation without an affect on my karma. Because in these games I find it way too easy to be the good guy and way too easy to be the bad guy.I just like to be the character that I build my character up to be. Apart from those 2 complaints there aren't really any other complaints I have about the gameplay.

The story in Mass Effect is that you play as the main character Commander Sheppard, who you can customize hisappearance and even his backstory. He joins up with a crew lead by Captain Anderson. His crew is given a task to procure a military beacon on the planet Eden Prime. However, after a disaster, involving one of the crew mates dying by the hands of a rogue spectre, who are the protectors of the council, the crew ends u failing. After providing evidence to the council that this spectre has gone rogue,it is up to Commander Sheppard and his crew to bring the rogue spectre down to justice. This general idea of a plot has been done alot but Mass Effect throws enough twists and turns in the story to make it seem unique.

Graphics in Mass Effect are OK but could be better. While the game looks, in general, good, there are several graphical bugs and awful looking textures and slow loading textures which definately hold the game back. Sound is really good. There are creative sfx for sci-fi related objects that I wouldn't have even thought of which fit in excellently.

This game will have you consumed for hours, I'm still busy exploring the galaxy and discovering all sorts of new stuff. There is also replay value in this. You will want to play the game again and try different dialogue choices, try and see if you can solve a problem either calmly, declaring war or see if you can find another creative way to solve a situation.

Mass Effect is a gem of a game that I reccommend to litterraly anybody that enjoys either SC-FIs or RPGs and if u fit in this category, this game is a must have.

Can’t believe I missed it the first time round! The story, characters and entire universe the team created is fantastic. I mean playing as a cross between (a female) James Bond and Captain Kirk fighting a rogue cyborg super spy and a mechanical God of Death, it doesn’t really get much cooler than that! Looking forward to seeing how this series goes. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So we come to my absolute game series, namely Mass Effect. Basically, in all of the Mass Effect reviews of the trilogy, I will praise the game and its great universe. As part of the Legendary Edition, I've gambled through the game for the (very often) repeated times and it took about 25 hours.

    story

Mass Effect 1 serves primarily as an introduction to the glorious and epic story of the Mass Effect universe around Commander Shepard. One becomes familiar with species, planets, threats and other realities.

Mass Effect 1 brings you closer to the whole universe through many different codex entries, quests and side quests, as well as dialogues. The action of the game begins in the year 2183, after mankind already had the first contact with extraterrestrial life forms (especially at the beginning also warlike).

The narrative style of the game is phenomenal. It's all a bit sluggish and difficult to get into, especially at the beginning, but it's definitely worth it. The counterplay between Shepard and the antagonist Saren and his geth is excitingly staged and the tension grows from game hour to game hour.

But behind this hides the real threat that extends over the entire trilogy and reaches an extent that is ready for a film. The threat posed by the Reaper (inorganic people) is embodied in Mass Effect 1 by the Sovereign and represented by an ingenious dialogue.

From a story point of view, Mass Effect 1 is the perfect introduction to the entire series and has both fun, difficult and very serious themes.

    Presentation / graphics

Graphically, the game is of course older, originally from 2007. But the Legendary Edition has been greatly improved in its textures and offers very nice light settings, which makes individual panorama representations look strong.

So far, a timeless look for me, which underpins its sci-fi setting and is very coherent.

The characters, individual species, locations, spaceships, etc. breathe so much life into this universe and give off this very coherent image.

The whole thing is garnished with great cut scenes, sometimes elegant camera work and overall a character representation in dialogues that is second to none.

    Gameplay

This is where you notice the age of Mass Effect 1 the most. First of all, I like it very much that you have many options to equip your character with different equipment or also have the opportunity to distribute RPG-classic skill points and refine your class.

The combat gameplay was very fiddly before the Legendary Edition and, especially in gunplay, it no longer felt up-to-date, but almost annoying. JustBut that has been significantly improved with the new edition, even if Mass Effect 2 and 3 are still much better.
Unfortunately, the AI often had dropouts and one or two bugs crept in.

Nevertheless, one has to honor that Bioware did something here to make the gunplay feel more effective and to offer a smoother experience. But that was sorely necessary, otherwise most newcomers would probably have returned the Legendary Edition after 20 minutes of Mass Effect 1.

The whole gameplay around the crew has to be emphasized. The crew of your own ship, the Normandy, makes up most of the game. Here it is important to deal with the people, to have dialogues and, as a whole, to pay attention to how they react to individual events. Interacting with the crew is at the core of the game.
The dialogues are also very important outside of the crew and enable different exits from a situation. The attitude mechanics of our character, who, depending on how he behaves, embodies more evil or more and more the good, is also useful for this and thus unlocks various dialogue options.

    Conclusion

Mass Effect as a whole is a phenomenon and my absolute favorite series of games. I've been devouring these games for years and Part 1 is part of every new playthrough. Mass Effect 1 offers entry into this incredibly large, complex and also very well thought-out universe and has captured my heart.

Absolute recommendation for every game lover, action or RPG fan or sci-fi fan. And please take your time with the game, soak up the dialogues, research and explore. It's worth it, especially in the dialogues there are great moments that you have to experience.

    5/5 crew members.

Although BioWare were very ambitious when developing the first Mass Effect, this is still a rough around the edges RPG with combat mechanics which leave you wanting more and the less said of the Mako sections the better. Still the idea of epic narrative with consequential player choices affecting the story is well established by this game.

There are moments (Virmire, for example), where Mass Effect shows just how special it can be. However, there are also a lot of moments in which the storytelling is really lacking. The story beats are there, your favorite characters are there (Garrus and Tali rock), but the editing is poor, the animations are dated, and some of the writing can be quite weak. What I mean by the editing being poor is that important moments seem to be cut too short and then the cutscenes don't seem to flow together very effectively as I remember them doing in the sequels. And for the writing, I just think some things don't come off. Like the Counsel being some obstructionist nuisance might work in theory (if a bit generic), but it was so poorly written. I just didn't believe the Counsel would come to some of the conclusions it came to and I didn't believe Shephard's frustration with other decisions. I think a prime example of the lackluster writing is the politician backstab moment at the end of the game (I don't want to spoil it but I think you'll know what I'm talking about). It is like a middle schooler's understanding of what a politician is, and nobody's motivations in the scene seem to make any sense.

That said, I have a soft spot for the Mass Effect series and I'm really glad I finally played the first one just for Virmire, which is definitely one of the highlights of the trilogy. Even if I felt they were underwritten, I was excited to see the origins of Garrus, Tali, and Liara, and I'm excited to replay the other two games.

I know, today we are in 2020 and the game play is a little outdated, it's more of a vintage RPG game play, however, for being a 2007 game the graphics still hold up pretty well, with facial animation that, back in the day, made us all excited and left us in awe (that's why Andromeda was such a let down as well). This game is a good representation of what Bioware was capable of doing and their strength in story telling. Every choice matters and it impacts your characters. Yes, there is a binary way of playing, either you are a renegade or a paragon and to unlock certain options you will have to lean more in one direction that the other and vicecersa. This is all because of the kind of story they wanted to tell and limitations of the time.
The combat is not the best, but that was never the point of this game, it's a story driven RPG that is meant to have you connect with your team and travel the galaxy in order to find a way to defeat the Reapers (the baddies). I replayed it earlier this year and enjoyed it as if it were my first time.
Because my console is old (and it is a big game) it's very glitchy, that's why I would suggest to save often and right before fights.
Even though the combat is meh, there are some aspects that I wish had been transferred in the sequels (I'll review the other 2 as well and explain why there), like the diversity in approach and tension that the different attackers approach you. Because the shooting is so basic and simple, if you are not much of a shooter game person, it won't be a problem, it will actually help you out in getting into them as it did with me.
As I mentioned you will be travelling the galaxy, which means you will land on planets for side missions and you will have a chance to use the infamous MAKO. I personally grew to love driven it; you can defy the laws of physics with it, you'll be wanting to throw the controller at the tv or you can challenge yourself in accomplishing this extra challenge the game throws at you lol I now laugh at it and if you go on the internet to watch some videos you will witness the comedy of it all.
This is definitely a game everyone needs to experience at least once. the remaster has been announced for 2021 and I can't wait to see how they update this chapter (I am terrified and exhilarated at the same time).

I went with a rather high score because in the end it's a game that will make you dream and feed your imagination, especially if you like the wonders of space. I wanted to be fair (the age of the game) and true to what I fell about it.

As an interactive story it's one hell of a good piece of entertainment. Taking your first tentative steps into this seriously rich universe, planting the seeds for larger implications later in the series, and tangling with one of the best antagonists ever, Saren, is a trip well worth taking.
