The gameplay is pretty nice but the writing of the game can get pretty bad. Some of the characters are sci fi knockoffs or depend on overused sci fi movie tropes. There's outright fanservice in the form of sensual shots of Miranda, and pointless annoying characters like Jack and copies of squad members from the first Mass Effect like Grunt (essentially a carbon copy of Wrex). For a game that puts such a strong focus on the backstories of the squad members, it seems that some of them hardly have stories at all like Jacob. The game also does a poor job of giving an explanation as to why these people are joining you on a mission that will almost certainly lead to their deaths when they hardly know you. They also charge a hell of a lot of money for the DLC.

    Final Thoughts:

Mass Effect 2 is a focused, more personal epic space opera compared to its predecessor, but it’s this intimacy that sets it apart as one of the best sci-fi RPGs. Characters shine and develop in stunning ways, and decisions affect them and the plot in such satisfying fashion that you’re forced to think about your choices or face the consequences in an exceptional finale.

I love that the shopping and interacting hub was now split up into multiple hubs which lead to easier access and more immersion. All collecting mission of the first part have been scraped which was very nice. But there are also some problems, the last mission is not that great, the scanning for materials was tedious and boring, some of the crew members could have been scraped and because of the lack of mobility and speed in the battle sequences, the main shooting and skills game-play got a little bit stale in some parts. But the huge positives in dialog and world building from the first game got even improved. This is nearly perfect and i'm highly anticipating to play the third game in the series. Expand

Mass Effect has become one of the most iconic franchises in the growing field of gaming, and it's easy to see why: it feels like a franchise that's always been there and it has a self-constructed history that we buy, just like the worlds of Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who. However, Mass Effect 2 is debate-ably more ambitious than those franchises combined. However, Mass Effect 2 is debate-ably more ambitious than those franchises combined. And dare I say it: Mass Effect leaves the Halo franchise for dead (but that's just my opinion).

This game is one of the most phenomenal experiences I've ever seen play out before my eyes, and I'm happily replaying it now. The whole series is immersive, deep in character development and freedom of player-choice: I can't fault this game if I tried. It's gorgeous, fun, exciting, and it's got an engrossing story that can take you on so many side-quests that are necessary to your choices as the player.

The characters are three-dimensional, graphically and figuratively speaking, and they don't bore you; they compliment the world of Mass Effect even more with their presence. No character is a carbon copy of the other; they're all their own persons, something that a lot of developers wish they could say; but most cannot.

Mass Effect 2 is a masterpiece of the video game medium and I think it's even suitable for non-gamers who want to try something new in the world of sci-fi.

Writing my review in comparison with Mass Effect 1 Legendary Edition. it was an upgrade in almost all aspects particularly with its gameplay, graphics, and content but it was not groundbreaking. With its reviews and reputation, you would as well have a very high expectation before you play the game. It did deliver and it is super fun specially it is a remake from a decade old game but it was not the same level as i was expecting as it was hyped. After 10-15 hours of playtime, its complexity became predictable which would lead you to wanting to finish the game already. The story is great and have a good ending but again it was predictable. perhaps if you are playing this game decade before your experience would surely be a masterpiece.

In terms of changes to the ME formula based on the first game, ME2 is an improvement in almost every regard. The environmental and artistic design are just as impressive, but now grounded in more player-friendly level design. Getting around is much less of a chore, given the frequent backtracking. Missions are more cohesive and clear, and more forgiving in their length. The dialogue and personality systems are unchanged from the original's great foundation, and the more diverse cast is overall a bit stronger than ME1.

Overall, a must-play but maybe not on this platform unless you are very patient.

It's not like a terrible game, but it's really bland retrospectively. The coorider shooter elements don't have as much weight compared to the first games. Understandbly this is more streamline and fluent. But like, the first game has this really odd clunky charm and creative this is lacking. I miss the exploration in the first game, the world building. This whole game is narritive dumps, short story collection kinda stuff with mixed results.

Not a fan at all on a reply. Absolutley not.

If someone thought that the end of Mass Effect (1) could be an end once and for all BioWare showed him how wrong he was. Immersive story, very interesting side-quests and those little recalling to the previous chapter (I think, for example, about Shiala, the green Asari you saved on Feros and that you meet in Illium) and of course the new characters which are pure fire. In addition the soundtrack is very pleasant. The Overlord DLC is also worth to play. If you still haven't played Mass Effect I strongly recommend you to do it as soon as possible. Expand

Story is catchy, maybe i´ll read some extra lore in future.
Also recruiting crew members and gaining their loyality, doing their side quests. Each quest is unique (loved it).

Last boss was terrifying i dont know why, but im 22 yo and i had weird feeling during this encounter (not scared but i dont know how to describe it).
PS network achievements - well designed as well, it motivates you to do every extra mission in game.

The best game in the Mass Effect trilogy. This time they reduced the RPG elements, increased the action, put a focus on the characters (development, interactions, backgrounds and side quests) and story telling. The main story arc is about the suicide mission. You will go to a place no one has ever returned to fight an enemy that most people believe is a myth. The whole game is practically a preparation for this intense mission that will have impacts to the whole galaxy. Like I said you will recruit old friends from Mass Effect 1 and new members. Each one has his own back story, motivations, world-views and missions. You will learn a lot about them and yourself. I will praise the development team for the characters. This is the best cast since Baldurs Gate 2. I like Archangel, Jack, Mordin, Thane, Joker, Legion and David Anderson. Then there is the Illusive Man. He is a great character and you will always question his true motives or what his agenda really is. You can view him as antagonist, anti hero, protector of mankind, leader of a criminal organisation, racist, someone who has looked behind the mirror or as the person that makes the decisions that others refuse to make but must be done. Bonus for Aria. She is not the kind of person you want as enemy. All characters are well integrated into the story and their side quests give them depth and personality. I will say they grow on me like real persons (Good immersion). Be warned this time you can die and receive a bad ending. You can always reload an earlier save files but there are points of no return (Use multiple save files!). You can win the game without any casualties or get your whole crew killed. It depends on you and your choices / preparations. The unique feature of the Mass Effect trilogy was that you can import your decisions from earlier games. For PlayStation it was only possible after the release of Mass Effect 1 in the Mass Effect trilogy with a patch. I did not test this for Mass Effect 1. You can of cause use an in-game method to determine some choices. It does work well. While you don't get total different outcomes you get a variety of differences and additional content. They fixed and polished the battle system. Now you have full control and there are no complaints. It works smoothly. I recommend the use of Biotics (space magic / the force;-). It is so rewarding to pummel your enemies with it. There is even a way to learn some of your teammates abilities (Not all or multiple at once). Like I mentioned earlier they reduced the RPG elements. You still have a level system and choices in ability paths but I have no problem with it because it works well. I have no complaints for this game except that I wanted more options for Mass Effect 1 decisions. Overall this is a game with great characters, side quest, lore and the suicide mission is a highlight in video game history. It is done so well and has so many possible outcomes. Critical warning: It is my duty to warn you of the conclusion of the trilogy in Mass Effect 3. Before I planed to replay all games to get my favourite outcomes. After it I haven't touched the games again (I am the kind of gamer that replays his favourite games once in a while). I wont go in details but it was even in the mainstream media. For details the famous YouTuber Angry Joe has made a list what is wrong with the ending. Expand

Another 50 hours it took me for the second game. The story and gameplay improved, however, there were mechanics that were left behind and I felt "limited" in the progress of my characters.

The great thing about Mass Effect 2 is that it respects your decisions from the previous game and that's something I had never experienced before at least.

Also, I was afraid I wouldn't like this game (in fact I didn't like the cover of the game. I found it tacky, but you never have to judge a book for its cover. The same you could say for games). I also was afraid that it would be too difficult but there are several modes to play. So yes, I almost miss one of the best games I've ever played for ps3. Graphics are great for 2011, sound, music, voices are also very good but I think that the most catchy thing apart of its plot is that you can choose to speak a lot and take real decisions. I mean you have so many options and sometimes you can take important choices. Here goes some advices to fully enjoy this game: feel free to ask and answer what ever you want (at first I wanted to do only good things but in the middle of the game I decided to choose what ever I felt that day), when the enemy is cover don't use the powers as if it was a gun, use it as it was a grenade, otherwise you'll fail. Subtitles could be bigger although they are not so tiny like in Sleeping Dogs. Also you can customize your character and your equipment. It took me 39 hours to beat with all the allies and with most of them "loyals". So, it can take you less time if you don't do this extra missions. Before going to Omega 4 is good to do this optional tasks, of course, if you want to go fast you can go directly to Omega 4 but I would recommend you to do some of this extra missions because they are worthy. I just want to start with Mass Effect 3 because I'm curious about the characters that will appear. Tu sum up: great game. Expand

Who is customizable if you choose...
When the game starts you have the choice of loading your character and choices from mass effect 1 or start fresh and choose the important decisions from that game during a brief recap…
Which I was thankful for since the first mass effect wasn’t interesting enough or fun enough for me to finish…
Thankfully Mass Effect 2 is much more enjoyable...
Youre still dealing with the threat of the reapers here…
You wake up from a 2 year long comma.. Things have changed, past relationships have changed, and now you have to deal with the collectors who are working for the reapers…
And you spend the entire 24 hours of this game going to different planets, recruiting the best mercenaries out there and gaining their loyalty by completing their own missions with them after they join your crew…
And if you see a fine piece of booty on that ship, you can hug them...
    You can hug them all…
The sex scenes are no witcher 3 scenes...
But the option to romance is there if you want to see bras or naked backs I guess.
Or pretend that someone loves you while you shoot things with them.
Between each mission you’re back in your ship the Normandy, and you choose the solar system and planet to travel to, you can then mine some of the planets for materials to upgrade your weapons and ship, or land for the mission…
And before every land you choose the 2 characters to bring with you as well as edit unspent skill points and change their weapon loadouts…
But the journey to the credits is fairly repetitive…
There are a few cool missions in here that mix things up, making you use your brain to investigate or figure out how to get inti a secured location..
But for the most part you’re clicking r3 to get the tiniest idea where to go with the games added objective compass, which is for the most part useless as it goes crazy and often points in the wrong direction…
And you shoot everything in your way…
Take cover... wait for these super spongey enemies to need to reload, use your powers... swap your weapons or command your squad to use their powers and swap their weapons…hop out of cover, shoot them, move on… along your ways hack some doors for credits or to progress and do all of it over and over until you get a mission complete…
And none of these levels are interesting to run through.. They look and feel the same throughout... 0 cool moments... even the boss battles are lame... They’re just for the most part larger and spongier enemies...
This is all 24 hours of the game…
The combat is spaced out as you always have to find an npc to talk to and then they tell you to go this location and talk to someone else…
But none of this is ever interesting.. none of the dialog choices seemed to hold any weight…
    And seemingly didn’t matter…
I found myself just shooting or assaulting every time the option popped up to get on with it…

I understand why people love Mass Effect 2…
There are so many interesting characters with interesting backstories…
But beyond that I just don’t get it…
Did I have fun with the game? Yes
But it never blew me away…. The story was a cool idea…
The delivery of the story was a cool idea…
But the repetitive mission structure and level design stops it from being amazing
Mass Effect 2 is a Great game

Shooting mechanics were a little above average. Hard to overstate how generic the plot is, maybe I made the wrong decisions but I was honestly surprised at how below average it was. You shouldn't need a walkthrough to have exciting things happen, regardless. In addition, the game assumes you already care about the setting and characters, so does very little world building. If my score seems high, its because:

    1) I played this before playing Mass Effect 1
    2) The world appeared interesting enough that I went out and bought Mass Effect 1 and 3 immediately.

I have no doubt that the game would be more entertaining had I played Mass Effect 1 first, since there are recurring characters. I highly recommend playing Mass Effect 1 first, or you will not get much out of this game.

Just as much of a masterpiece as the first, but this time around the combat system is right on par! With choices carrying over from the first game, and so many different choices and classes to play in this one, this as the first begs to be played over and over with an unique experience every time!

Often, over the years, I heard talking about Mass Effect 2 as the best chapter in the saga. I do not agree. Assuming that the first chapter is unsurpassed, the second chapter is great but not at the levels of the first.

The plot of ME 2 is strange: for the first half of the game I found it slightly slow, as if something epic would still start but could not do it. It was not bad, but it was as if the best was still to come, but it couldn't do it. Fortunately in the second half of the game, the story took off in a single breath, and going forward I was more and more surprised by the plot twists. The game's plot culminated in the final mission, the "Suicide Mission" that is absolutely perfect, fantastic, made in every detail: the choice of the main team, choice of specialist, choice of the chief of the second team, perfect atmosphere, perfect setting, perfect soundtrack, enemies and boss are extraordinary. Really, it seems to you to be there in front of the apocalypse, in front of the end of all things, in a daring ride with no return. This mission saved the whole game.

For the gameplay the thing is a bit different: the whole rpg section of the first chapter has been reduced to the bone. There is no longer a real inventory, there are no statistics of the weapons and armor, the freedom to manage the clothing is ridiculous. The number of available weapons is negligible. The planetary exploration with Mako, has been replaced by a system of mining extractions with probes that although is fun has nothing of exploratory. The only thing that has improved is the exploration of the galaxy with the Normandy slightly deeper, and the third-person shooter mechanics that have been improved. I liked the fact that there are more teammates, 12 instead of 6. The longevity is also slightly higher than the first chapter. It's actually a pretty good and fun gameplay, but the problem is that it doesn't seem Mass Effect.

Definitely improved is the graphics component, and the Unreal Engine 3 has been used optimally. The sound is very nice, and as I said before the soundtrack of the final mission is fantastic. Sometimes game loadings are a bit too long.

It is complicated. If Mass Effect 2 could have had the same gameplay of the previous chapter, it would probably be the best chapter in the series, as many say. However things went differently: Mass Effect 2 is a great game, but it is far from being better than the first chapter.

Do not get the hype on this game. Its definitely not an rpg atleast as much as the first.Character models look great. Character development is good. And everything else sucks. Backgrounds are mediocre. Most 3ps do combat better. Not many rpg type skills at all. I was looking for an rpg there are way better 3ps. Lost all interest in the series after this 1.

    1. Story
2 years have passed since Commander Shepard (character you play as) ended Sovereign's invasion along with the threat of the Geth. But the war with the reapers has just begun.
In the beginning, the Normandy get's attacked & destroyed, with Commander Shepard sacrificing themselves in process in order to save his/her crew. Their body is then recovered by an underground terrorist organization known as Cerberus, where they eject billions of credits in order to bring Shepard back from the dead. A new enemy known as the Collectors has revealed itself overtime, and Cerberus tasks the newly born Shepard to bring them down before they wipe humanity from existence. But will Shepard be able to gain trust from his/her squadmates, and successfully adapt to the new atmosphere that surrounds them?

    2. Voice Acting
This is what we need for voice acting! This is perfect! I have never heard such a beautiful cast in like ever! When the actors & actresses speak, you're believing it, and it brings tears to your eyes because you never thought this would ever be possible.

    3. Graphics and Visuals
Sometimes the frame rates go a little slow; and when that happens, you begin to notice a little bit of fuzzyness of pixels. But when it doesn't happen, it is astounding! Galaxy maps are detailed to the core with colourful design. Areas you explore during combat are never bland or boring to look at. The sci-fi textures are pushed to it's limit. If this art doesn't impress you, nothing will!

    4. Gameplay
Gameplay refers to it's battle system, customization & level up, and the galaxy map exploration. Put it all together and it's Awesome.

    -Battle System-
There are plenty of areas to take cover at all times. Every weapon in this game is deadly enough or usable in some way. Boss enemies are balanced, provide a challenge, and get introduced to you at the best possible timing. The game is very balanced. Of course it can be annoying when all your powers are on charge and you have a krogan coming after you at close range, but this still adds to the experience. As you play on, you'll have to develop strategies and come up with tactics just to get through areas.

    -Customization-
You get plenty of variety in this game, form the class you choose to play as, the character's appearance, even their armor will change visually. The weapon variety however will feel limited, but it's all due to balancing. When you finally acquire them, the game gives you plenty of squadmates. Customization will not feel dead here.

    -Galaxy Exploration-
Exploring the galaxy is only fun on your first playthrough, and it can't be explained why in this review due to spoilers. From 2nd playthrough and beyond, it will be boring, fortunately not boring enough to deduct from the experience.

    5. Soundtrack
And yet, another amazing thing done with this game. Though it does kind of feel empty having no music when walking around most of your ship. The mood music for cut-scenes was chosen excellently, and more-so after you finish a mission you'll really feel like you've accomplished something.

    6. Bugs
Even the most perfect of games seems to be hit in the PS3 era, and there's one bug that is the most evil of them all: corrupted saves. It's happened to me, and it's happened to many other players. And then there's these bugs...
    - The galaxy map will play itself twice if you exit to the Normandy and re-enter the map quickly.
    - Storyline cut-scenes do not proceed sometimes, forcing you to reload a save.
    - Sometimes loading screens will take 3 times longer than they should.

    7. Personal Enjoyment
I have done so many playthroughs by now that I've lost count. This game packs an experience that you will never feel anywhere else.

    8. Overall Verdict
The only thing that's holding this back from a perfect rating is the corrupted saves. Even the other bugs aren't that bad because of the amount of auto saves given, and because crashes don't happen often. Mass Effect 2 earns it's high rating, and I am going to issue this a 9 out of 10! This game deserved to be Saved instead of destroyed. Nice one, Bioware! Keep up the good work!

Mass Effect 3 could have been the best of the series, but unfortunately, I have to give it to ME2. That is NOT to say that ME3 is bad; it is a MUST play, and its ending is quite great, once you have the Extended Cut. But the reason why I say ME2 is better is because it's give you more freedom in speaking, which is one of the things which made the series spectacular in the first place. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mass Effect 2 picks up where the first one left off- in most aspects it succeeds and in some it falls a little bit flat. The galaxy and the characters feel more alive than they ever did. This is on one hand due to the beautiful designs and on the other the many missions that bring life to an already established galaxy, flesh out the different cultures and bring the relationship with the crew-members to the next level. And although there are 10 (12 with DLCs) core crew-members this time around one cares for every one them as they all get their own personal missions.
While the scope of the story from Mass Effect 1 was much bigger and apocalyptic, the story here is no let-down at all. This can be immediately felt during the first 2 minutes of the game. It's much more personal and character driven as Shepard finds himself allied with an old enemy, Cerberus, and has to make moral decisions which eventually result in different endings. And while talking about choice one cannot skip over the fact that the decisions from Mass Effect 1 can be imported or rewritten through a short Comic at the beginning of the game.
Bringing back things from ME1 is what makes this game more than "just" a sequel. Many places and situations from the predecessor are revisited and can be experienced from a different perspective this time around. The characters all make sense in this setting and although the story is about as sci-fi as it can get the characters are relate-able and the conversations feel appropriate and sometimes even smart. All that shows that a lot of care was put into the development of this game.
Also improved or emphasized was the humor in the game as there is more than one situation that made me at least smile.
The game also introduces the "Interrupt"-system which changes the flow of the conversation which gives the player an additional layer of immersion. It is not only a nice gimmick which breaks up the gameplay but both given options (either Paragon or Renegade) always feel more than satisfying.
The fighting was improved as well- it feels much faster and more brutal. Skills feel different and powerful after leveling up. Taking cover is key as Commander Shepard is no superhuman and will die after taking some hits. Although the change from overheating to changing heat sinks was a little bit off. If they needed to implement something like Ammo, I would have used it to strengthen the difference between alien and human technology.
Also mini-games are present in form of hacking which is always a fun way to mix things up.
After all the praising I have to talk about the negatives as well:
The RPG elements are stripped away to the absolute minimum. Each character has only 5 to 6 powers to choose from. Weapons are of course present and the player can choose from a set of different guns: sniper rifle, assault rifle, Shotgun, pistol and new additions in form of the SMG and HW. The player can collect armor pieces but there is almost no freedom in modifying them. The crew-members receive an alternate look at one point in game but it feels ultimately disappointing after all the options that were given in ME1. Upgrades are present but the game lacks in making changes visible which makes it ultimately forgettable.
Furthermore, shops are now selling "designs". This means one has to buy the designs, fly through the galaxy search the needed resources and use them to built the weapon. This seems just as a forced way to make mining essential for completion, which it should never be. Resources can't be sold to shops, which more than once resulted in the situation that I had a huge amount of resources but no money.
Mining is now done by scanning the surfaces of planets and sending down a probe which collects the scanned resources. This is of course an improvement over the Mako's campy controls but it still feels like a cheap way of prolonging the gameplay.
Although the game gives us choice on how to resolve a conflict (Paragon or Renegade), I often switched and went the middle way. But instead of spending leveling points on Persuasion-skills because I CHOSE to have more options during discussions, I had to have a high enough rating on either Paragon or Renegade to have the chance to resolve a situation in a favorable manner. This takes away choice, which is one of the core-gameplay-elements.
Another point is that the game is pushing more towards hypocrisy than anything else: While Paragon-Shepard always stops his crew-members from killing, he is always going into a mission guns-blazing. It would have been interesting to be able to finish missions in more than one way like neutralizing enemies using neurotoxin rather than killing all of them.
Finally, there are so many DLCs which cost as much as the game itself. That would usually be no problem but they seem like they were taken out of the game in an afterthought as means of quick-cash-ins.
Overall, no one can deny that this is a fantastic game to spend hours and hours with

So the story begins weeks after Shepard killed Saren & destroy the Sovereign. But the Galaxy are still in constant threat of the Reapers. One day, the Normandy was out on a mission when "The Collector" arrives and destroy the Normandy, killing most of the crews, including Shepard. Cerberus, an underground mercernary organization, is trying to revive shepard. And after 2 years, they succeed in bringing Shepard back, for two reasons, To destroy the collectors and to protect humanity. Can Shepard saves the galaxy..again? What is Cerberus? Who is the Collector and what are their ties to the Reapers? Play and find it out yourself.

    Plus point:
    - Better graphic than the first one! ME2 totally got an upgrade in that part. The characters are more detail, and also now we got a collection of Weapon & Armor which is just too awesome.
    - No more exploring with the tank! Well, finally Bioware decided to change their exploration system. No more tank in an unknown planet. Although of course they are still annoying scanning and sending probe system. But that will prove useful when you got Mordin, the one who will do research on your weapon, armor, and Normandy.
    - Lots of characters to choose. We got quite a line up here! And everyone has their own unique skills (When you finished their loyalty mission). Which makes them different one to another). Also we got to see some reccuring characters like GARRUS! (still with his cool scouter!)
    - Subquests are more fun. Secondy quests are fun! I mean there are stories to all of it, no matter how simple it is. From finding items to stopping a ship from an explosion, every mission counts.
    - Choices DOES make a difference. I mean finally, we got a lot of choices to decide whether someone lives or dies. And also, the new Paragon/Renegade actions (with L2 & R2 buttons), making the game more interesting.
    - Epic Story! It was really cool, they "killed" shepard and then "revived" him. Making a brand new chapter in his life, with some old members. Also, the choices you make on ME1, DOES have an effect on this game.
Also the story about the collectors, the protheans, and the reapers, ARE interesting. I'm not much of a fan of sci-fi, but Mass Effect is too damn awesome. Can't wait to play the 3rd one.

    Minus Point:
    - Crappy final boss. It was either i was overlevel or the boss is just too easy. It didn't took more than 5 minutes to beat the final boss, so that was kind of disappointing to me. Although, that was in the normal difficulty, i wonder how it'll be on the insane difficulty.
    - A new battle system. I mean at the first game, you got unlimited ammo. You only need to keep your weapon from overheating. But not now, you got limited ammo! So it IS possible that you ran out of ammo when fighting hordes of enemies. But you'll get used to it as time goes by. But at the beginning it'll be quite annoying.

    The Verdict:
Mass Effect 2 is FAR better than the first game. It's full of actions, better graphics, great lines of characters, and more than that GREAT story. To tell the truth, i was pessimistic about the series. But right now, i can say that this game is AWESOME. It barely has any weak points, other than the easy last boss & adapting to the new battle system, but other than that everything is just great. 9/10 from me. A must play if you have a PS3.

The only fault i find with the gameplay is that the shooting feels less fluid and instinctive than the best cover shooters available, with an irritating need to take cover behind scenery before you can leap over it, and the weakness of the melee combat. There are upgradeable powers in the game, and you will need them as the standard melee attack is useless. The graphics of the game are near flawless, except in some of the DLC where the textures were very poor and my character repeatedly disappeared through walls. Overall this is an engaging, good-looking, challenging game, with a great deal of side quests and a play time of roughly thirty hours. However if your looking for a game that is driven more by gameplay than story you may be less forgiving of the flaws with the combat system. Expand

Repetitively shooting enemies in every missions isn't enough to keep me engaged. Games like GTA and Read Dead are jam-packed with fun things to do and places to explore, but Mass Effect only has generic, repetitive shooting. I suppose the appeal of a game like this comes from getting immersed in the back story of all the various characters and alien races...but the appeal of that only lasts so long when the actual missions/gameplay are just so generic and uninteresting. It was clear the makers of this game were focused on the story lines, and the gameplay itself was an afterthought (but creating interesting and challenging gameplay should be the first priority of any game developer...story is a nice bonus, but it's not enough to carry a game). I expected great things from it, and was pleasantly unsurprised; Mass Effect 2 is a great game. The story is serious and very well written; even if now and then you have the feeling it is more a bridge between Mass Effect and Mass Effect 3 than a story by its own. Both the old and new characters are interesting, and it is always fun to see how their different personalities interact. Combat (shooting) was greatly improved from the last game, and the character evolution mechanic was simplified. This makes Mass Effect 2 much more dynamic than the original, and speeds up the action to frenetic levels. The moral choices are deeper than ever, and everything you say may or may not have severe consequences later; and not knowing is great. The Mass Effect Genesis interactive comic allowed me to choose many things I had done in the original's PC version, but still lacked many important moral choices. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Mass Effect 2 is absolutely brilliant. I picked this game up around 2 months ago and didn't really start playing it until about 2 weeks ago. From the moment I picked it up I was hooked. I kept telling myself to stop playing and just go to bed, but I couldn't It was just so damn addictive. Mass Effect 2 tells the story of Commander Shepard (who can be male or female and can be fully customized) leading a suicide mission against a supposedly mythical alien race known as the Collectors. It was discovered that Collectors were abducting humans from their space colonies and taking them off to their home world to do god knows what. Commander Shepard is tasked with building up a super-squad of some of the best soldiers, assassins, engineers and biotics and scientists in the galaxy. It's a fantastic story with absolutely amazing characters. The amazing thing about the Mass Effect series is that every single choice you make matters. I was sad when I lost my favourite character in the end, but then I realised that if I'd upgraded my ship at all I wouldn't have had my ship partially destroyed, and all of my crew taken away from me. I also lost some other characters due to the fact that I accidentally stuffed up their loyalty missions, causing them to lose focus on the mission in the end. It sucked, but I was still absolutely amazed at how well Bioware pulled off this "every choice you make matters" style. If you ask me the story and RPG elements are what make this game shine, the gameplay not so much. The controls can be clunky at times with fairly stiff movement, and having to deal with enemies up close is an absolute pain. Husks are incredibly easy enemies and yet if I was surrounded by 1 or 2 of them I'd still usually die thanks to the piss-poor melee system. That as well as graphical glitches, laggy sound in cuts-scenes and tedious load screens just to go to places one floor above you are some of the down points of the game. However the good certainly outweighs the bad. Oh and a little treat, when probing planets for minerals go to the local cluster and probe Uranus. Be prepared to laugh at what EDI (the Normandy SR2's AI) says. Overall this game is a 9.8/10. Expand

Perhaps the Deus Ex: Human Revolution soundtrack would have fared as a tighter glove than Jack Wall's compositions in this sci-fi epic. Aside from that, the confluence of shooting behind cover along with the different types of powers is strategic and fun even on the highest difficulty. I wish developers would make more sci-fi RPGs of this caliber. Too many recent games, that when juxtaposed, have no relevancy among each other, but far too many things in common, such as a bunch of elves casting magic and dwarves wielding axes. Mass Effect 2 is my most beloved game yet because it breaks free of that. Expand

Combining BioWare's signature world building and interactive narratives with a polished third person shooter mechanic Mass Effect 2 is an atmospheric, character based action-roleplayer that continues Commander Shepard's struggle against the godlike Reapers and their proxies. Although not without a few minor flaws (inventory and skills a bit too streamlined for some tastes, a bland planet scanning mechanic replacing the wonky driving sections of ME1, and a few levels that are not much more than corridors), Mass Effect 2 certainly deserves all of its GOTY awards for 2010. The art direction, voice acting, and music are all part of a quality presentation that more than makes up for those minor nitpicks, and it also succeeds in a rarely tried experiment of importing saves from ME1, providing a unique and personalised continuous experience throughout the franchise for each player. Add to this a selection of reasonably chunky DLC, including the excellent "Lair of the Shadow Broker", this is a grand space opera to even rival the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek. Expand

The variety offered in this game, as well as an amazing dialogue tree that changes details and eventually the outcome of the game in EVERY decision that you make is profound, and deserves applaud. This game is addicting, fun, gripping, and hard to put down. The characters are very real and life-like, and you are able to pursue relationships with this characters in different ways. Nothing but a Gears of War clone. A 10 hour RPG (if you can call it that). No exploration what so ever. Everything straight forward. RPG for a 10 year old. Holds your hand. Nothing but shooting and the shooting isn't even fun. Stupid conversations that take you nowhere.

This game is without a doubt the best game I have ever played. I got the game in late 2011 and personally thought it was better than Skyrim.

Mass Effect 2 is still a game you shouldn't miss at all costs, and one of the best RPG's of this generation of consoles. You need an internet connection to download all of the contents which EA didn't include on the main BR disk.

Yes, ME2 isn't perhaps the most technical RPG ever created, but it's easily one of the slickest, bearing the unmistakable master craftsmanship of RPG luminaries, BioWare. Not only is this supersized Sony edition of ME2 outstanding value for money – it also represents a sound long-term investment. If the Mass Effect 3 reveals are anything to go by, the conclusion of this saga will be similarly unmissable and the galactic apocalypse will be decided in our own backyard: Earth. [March 2011, p70]
