    Heavenly Sword is impossible to play normally on PS3 in 2023. I don't know what it looks like on the emulator on the PC, but on PS3 the game is just technically terrible. First of all, it is outdated in gameplay, and looks much worse in this regard even than the sequel to God of War. Sixaxis elements have been added to the gameplay (a terrible solution in Sony first wave exclusives onHeavenly Sword is impossible to play normally on PS3 in 2023. I don't know what it looks like on the emulator on the PC, but on PS3 the game is just technically terrible. First of all, it is outdated in gameplay, and looks much worse in this regard even than the sequel to God of War. Sixaxis elements have been added to the gameplay (a terrible solution in Sony first wave exclusives on PS3). Graphically, the game does not look bad and clearly better than games of its time, but what's the point when your game does not even go to 30FPS, but in floating 20-25? How can you play a 25-frame slasher, and if there are more opponents on the screen, the FPS value can drop to 20-22 frames. It's just unplayable. Surprisingly, this is the debut project of Ninja Theory. Because not the setting, not the main character, not the plot (at least the first 4 hours) are not impressive. If you released a remaster on PS5, you can still give the game a second chance, and so this game is literally buried with PS3.… Expand

    This is a very good game!! It's reminiscent of God Of War series in some gameplay mechanics, but not completely. It definitely has its own identity. Solid story, good character models & acting. Story was wrapped up fairly neat, that any sequel would've been a reach. It could be remastered, & add trophies to it.

    This game was not enjoyable to play. Bad controls, bad performance, and forced six-axis functionality just makes it frustrating to play at every given moment. You get to die a lot in this game or lose because of the time expiring for all the wrong reasons and the game doesn't allow you to be rewarded properly. Graphics looks dated, but still okayish.     A terrible action movie, the character has no response, the feeling that I am playing with a log that even a roll cannot do normally, the combo simply does not exist, the hero without his sword cannot do anything to the enemy

    the "god of war clone" is far from that actually. for those that actually played it understand this **** is dying the whole game. despite it being a short story (depending on the difficulty) the different styles from the same sword is dope and very distinctive move sets with finishers make it a fun AND short ride.

    Great game with awesome cutscenes, great models of main characters, original story and enternaining gameplay. Unfortunately the game is a little bit short, and since Ninja Theory and Sony separated their ways it looks like we will never get a sequel, a remake, or even a remaster, what is really sad.

    I just bought this game now in 2020 and wow! This game holds up incredibly well for coming out in 2007. It's the best looking PS3 game I've played. The fight animations are awesome! My only problem so far is the audio. The characters are talking ahead of the character animation. It's weird and I haven't seen it in a game this bad before. I will update this review when I finish the game.

    Good lord. The screen tearing every 2 seconds made it hard to focus and the fps drop made it feel like I was playing Crisis 1 on my old ass potato PC.

    -Terrible performance issues/screen tearing. I felt like R Kelly's **** in prison watching this game on my TV.

    - I can forgive the graphics aging badly since it is a game made in 2007, but no mercy for choosing that colorless gray bland palette so many game developers go for to save memory. Everything in this game is **** gray. With the exception of Nariko and Kai and Bohan and sneaky sneaky snake chick every wall, enemy and weapon is as colorful and exciting as Joe Biden giving a speech.

    -The AWFUL AWFUL generic button mashing combat.

    -The GOD awful delayed QTE boss ending fights. Took me about 20 QTE fails during the flying Fox fight even though I was clearly pressing the buttons when they prompted.

    -The worst aiming system ever implemented in a video game. I've never raged so hard trying to complete basic 3 glyphs in any mission that involved Kai's aiming. If every aiming sequence in this game was removed this game would be a solid 6/10 carried by its story and voice acting.

    The positives

    +Bohan. This guy in my opinion is the best voice actor I've ever seen. Seeing him come to life with his voice and motion capture in Heavenly Sword is a sight to behold. The scenes he has with Flying Fox are hilarious.

    + The story metaphors about feudal China wanting to kill their daughters at birth. The perfect comparisons between strong Nariko and that fat ugly son Bohan has implement it even further.

    + When Nariko "breaks the 4th wall" at the end of a chapter and looks towards you(or the Gods of her sword) to not abandon her.

    + Kai's severe damaged state is adorable and reminds me of Ed from Cowboy Bebop. The inspiration is great.

    Overall I looked forward to this game forever and the surprise was that it was the most disappointing game I have ever played in years. It reminded me of No More Heroes 2. How great hype and marketing can overshadow how bad a video game can be.    … Expand

    No era de esperar un gran guión, ni nada nunca visto antes. Heavenly Sword está diseñado como demo de las capacidades técnicas de la consola. Y como tal, es donde fracasa estrepitosamente. El juego está completamente roto por intentar buscar un buen apartado visual. Por culpa de esto, se han descuidado el resto de apartados, incluido el mas importante a nivel técnico, la fluidez.

    Podría haber sido un juego de aprobado justito pero es completamente injugable. No se como en su momento se pudo pasar y dejar que el resto de compañías hicieran lo mismo al comienzo de vida de PS3.    … Expand

I played ‘Enslaved’ by them and it wasn’t nearly as bad. I was expecting the same kind of experience. I was very wrong. Starting with inhumanly unintuitive controls, through the most ridiculous shooting mechanics I have ever seen in a game, to insanely frustrating boss fights. You thought Dark Souls was difficult, think again, play this mess and you will see. Dark Souls is a cakewalk comparing to this. I finished Darks Souls three times I know what I’m talking about. Last chapter of this crap is one gigantic boss fight. There is no difficulty setting. Most of the game is rather easy and frustrating because of the shooting mechanic, but nothing comparing to the final boss fight. The final boss is absurdly difficult. One of the worst difficulty spikes in the gaming history. It gets better. When you thought you beat the bastard there comes a QTE sequence, if you fail it, guess what, the boss gains a health boost and you need to keep fighting. After countless attempts I finally beat it. Up until the boss fight I had spent 6 hours playing the game. Beating the boss took me ridiculous 5 hours on top of that and I’m not terrible at games. I was so hyped for the upcoming Hellblade from Ninja Theory, but now I’m seriously worried it would become something like this. Very disappointing game. Absolute waste of time and money… Expand

    I rented this game back when it was released, did not get enough exposure and everything about it was burned into my memory forever. Finally bought it and I absolutely love this game. Nariko is one bad B****!

Visually excellent; a unique style with a lot of effort put into character models, environments, motion capture performances and voice acting. Very much an early 7th gen console game, uses Sixaxis features (but this is horrible, and can be turned off) with lots of bonus materials to unlock. Gameplay isA (mostly) enjoyable linear third-person hack & slash adventure in the God of War vein. Visually excellent; a unique style with a lot of effort put into character models, environments, motion capture performances and voice acting. Very much an early 7th gen console game, uses Sixaxis features (but this is horrible, and can be turned off) with lots of bonus materials to unlock. Gameplay is enjoyable enough; button mashy with an emphasis on combos. Some irritating design decisions do appear (for example dodge/roll is bound to the right analog stick, relies too much on QTEs), mostly good in terms of performance with some screen tearing when viewing larger vistas, load times can seem excessive but do not ruin the experience.     Stunning visuals, amazing combat, amazing story, amazing characters and a great counter system.

    I suggest turning off the sixaxis and using french language.

    Amazing, Excellent even.

    The camera did get in the way a few times and I felt the last boss was unnecessarily difficult.

    Still, an amazing action/beat em up that set the standard for ps3 games to follow.

    I've played too many games to enjoy hack and slash games but this is an older title which is kinda known to be a hidden gem for a reasonable price nowadays so i decided to check it out. I did find the gameplay pretty boring and repetitive (that may just be me) but i really did enjoy a lot of the aspects of this game. I found the artwork and graphics nice and the levels fast and easy toI've played too many games to enjoy hack and slash games but this is an older title which is kinda known to be a hidden gem for a reasonable price nowadays so i decided to check it out. I did find the gameplay pretty boring and repetitive (that may just be me) but i really did enjoy a lot of the aspects of this game. I found the artwork and graphics nice and the levels fast and easy to complete. I give especially high marks to the characters in this game they were beyond awesome and i don't think you could do a better job in a game. I really felt each character as their own identity and this is the sole reason i kept playing this game. Overall a decent game even in 2015 this is worth playing just for experiencing how well the characters are. The gameplay was for me disappointing and it felt as most of the game was a demo for the new at the time sixasis controllers abilitities. If the story and characters were not as they were id say this game is a dime a dozen but the characters were that good. Solid game with no glitches and overall I would recommend this at todays used game prices. Not a must play but a good game for a 10hr or less investment.… Expand

    Excellent hack & slash game. Strange how this game has better graphics with better frame rate than games out nowadays. This game is a button masher but still enjoy it, especially enjoy the bullet view arrow shots that can be controlled by character.

    A good game with incredible graphics, nice gameplay and superb voiceacting. You can pick it now up for real cheap so if you like hack and slash games you should give this one a try.

The graphic and soundtrack are fine and create a fitting experience. The story is O.K. and the villain is very enjoyable. On the bad side: The game is relative short, the controls are not perfect (not broken more unfitting forNot a bad game but also not the flawless masterpiece.     I thought it was a pretty solid game. The difficulty level was just right, there was enough variety in the levels to keep me entertained, and the story was fun. It's not the greatest game ever, but well worth playing.

    the characters in this game are very vivid till this day... amazing performance...

    the combat system is also nice but i agree with all the naysayers about framerate issues and the motion stuff...

    i still recommend it the story and the characters are very original and the game should be 5 dolar max atm.

That particular effort to produce a strong female character goes straight to hell when the game starts up... and she's DYING! Dying because of a lame Soul Edge clone, no less. She's mean-spirited, downright annoying whenever she speaks, and she controls like a mother! thanks to theWow, quite impressive. That particular effort to produce a strong female character goes straight to hell when the game starts up... and she's DYING! Dying because of a lame Soul Edge clone, no less.     This game should have sold better than it did. Ninja theory need to be commended for creating one of the best PS3 games ever made. The story is clearly leaps and bounds ahead of something like Shakesphere.

The story provides enough of a plot to explore Nariko's character but mostly stays out of the way of the hordes of enemies and outlandish    While it certainly has its flaws, they are minor and certainly not large to discredit this as a must-have for any PS3 system.

    The story consists of a revenge plot with a strange twist: our heroine has some major issues with the people she's avenging. The story provides enough of a plot to explore Nariko's character but mostly stays out of the way of the hordes of enemies and outlandish bosses that you get to slaughter. Rarely does this get said about a game, but: the acting is magnificent! The cutscenes were directed by none other than Andy Serkis, noted for his portrayal of Gollum in the "Lord of the Rings" movies and Cesar in "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," known as the best motion capture actor in the business. Serkis also plays the game's chief villain, the despicable King Bohan, a complex villain with heavy doses of heartlessness and insanity. Nariko is portrayed by Anna Torv (think Olivia Dunham from the TV series "Fringe"), and she does a great job of bringing us a badass heroine with some deep emotional flaws that you can't help but love. The game is told mostly in flashback, with some very bizarre monologues taking place during major breaks in the action that very few actressess could have pulled off convincingly in person, much less in motion capture. In many ways this game is like an interactive film.

    But, I know most of you out there could care less! "How does the game play?" you are pleading. Short answer: great. Nariko has many options in combat with moves that require a bit of technical ability to execute mixed in with moves you can get by smashing square over and over again. While it is possible to beat the game "button mashing," it is certainly more satisfying to take the time to learn at least a few of the combos and employ them strategically as it will make the game much easier. Nariko has three stances with the Heavenly Sword (which is what you spend most of your time wielding): speed, power, and ranged. There is no guard button since Nariko automatically blocks attacks that she is capable of blocking in her current stance. Enemies glow with a colored aura when they attack, signaling which stance you should be in to successfully block the attack. For those with good timing, there is also a counterattack option, which becomes an automatic kill when executed in a short enough frame. Defeating enemies fills up your superstyle gauge which allows for the use of level 1, 2, or 3 superstyle attacks. These devastating attacks can literally level armies! These attacks, her myriad of combos, and counterkills give Nariko a gleeful ouch factor that adds to her smooth and visually pleasing combos resulting in a character that is mesmerizing to play.

    As much as I love this game, I found myself giving it a lower score than I wanted to for a few reasons. First of all, there is some button mashing. There are some levels that require a level of knowledge of Nariko's fighting style to do well, such as when five enemies blitz you at once or some ninja chick pulls a reversal of your counterattack, but the majority of them can be mashed through if one is determined enough. The game features beautiful graphics (others have disagreed with me, they must have a poor video connection or something), but works against them in a couple of ways. First, there is no free-rotating camera. You can press the left and right triggers to force the camera to pan a limited direction one way or another, but it snaps back very quickly when released, making some camera angles difficult to deal with. The game also features quicktime sequences. While normally a good thing, the graphics are so pretty and the action so well scripted that I find myself wanting to just watch them and not press the buttons. Also, the response times are very quick, making a new player forego seeing the big sequences in lieu of watching the bottom of the screen for buttons. Lastly, the game is short. This was of course reflected in the lower pricing, but it is such a shame to come out of such a fun game craving more.

    Heavenly Sword is a must-own just to see the marriage of cinematic and videogame production techniques. However, those who start it won't be disappointed with the gameplay or effects either.     Ok game, it's pretty crappy! Boring controls, it's your average hack n' slash. Nothing new, amazing landscapes and graphics but that's about it. The combat system gets boring within the first ten minutes and very minor combos you can perform. Characters are fun, yet very stereotypical.

    The game is short, if you happen to see this game on bargain, buy it. If you can rent it, please do rent it. You will only need a few hours to finish this, but this game still deserves your attention and your money.

Flawlessly depicted emotions, personality and facial expressions (not to mention smooth fighting actions)! This motion-capture and facial rendering technology of Ninja Theory is ahead of its time.

    I want so much to be a part of the story.

    I'm just sad there's no Heavenly Sword 2.

    For a 2007 game this is a gem, for playing it for the first time in 2011 it lacks multiplayer and is a bit short. This game has simply GREAT cut scenes and voice acting, the list of stars in this game is amazing. The levels are beautiful and the combat great fun, with a compelling story too. Great!

    One of the best hack and slash games I have ever played. The only things i didn't like about the game were the compulsory sixaxis controls and when you had to use the bow and arrow, that was irritating.

    I though this game was amazing and it's a lot better than these other games that are coming out lately that only seem to rely on graphics. This game was fun and I love the camera angles when she does counter attacks. I thought the story was amazing and her character development throughout the game was flawless. To me this is one of the best games I have ever played!

    Generally looks pretty...Combat is ok--DMC or GoW is much more satisfying. There's some varied gameplay, but it seems like they threw in stuff just to utilize the six axix controller function...it's not very fun. The quick action parts to the fights is distracting---takes you out of the fight--but that seems to be a trend now with combat intensive games...

    I agree with all the comments made in this section. It has moments of brilliance but the cut scenes and storyline get in the way. The main problem I have with this game is that it simply doesn't hold my attention. It ticks all the boxes for action etc but there is something lacking and that is a shame. Rent before you buy OR bargain bucket for £15 like I did.

The ONLY thing enticing the user to replay the game was the obligitory 'unlocked' hard mode. On the after touch gameplay it got annoying when the using Kai, the arrows just missing the enemies. Also a bit too short. Also if she is a warrior, why can't she jump during gameplay?

That was an awesome gaming experience. Forget about what other people say, go get a copy and see for yourself. I am keeping a copy and showcase it to my other non PS3 friends. I bought an Xbox 360 and Gears of War first. I thought the game was good. The moment I saw Heavenly Sword in a game store, I immediately sold the Xbox 360 and Gears of War and bought PS3 and Heavenly Sword. I never look back.     Best game I've played to date on the PS3. Revolutionary title. This isn't just a game but an interactive movie. Every PS3 owner should at least rent this game. Buying it and supporting a first party IP like Ninja Theory is really the best way to go in my view.

He clearly has never played the game. I suspect he's a 360 fanboy that watched someone else play it, perhaps at a kiosk or friend's house. The sixaxis control are in fact, NOT forced. You can quite easily switch them off and do all aftertouch and catapult aiming with the analog stick. Like just about everyone who played this game with their TV sets switched ON have said before, the visuals are stunning. The combo system is a little complex, and I will agree that results in button mashing but it doesn't matter when you pull off some of the insanely cool combos and fatalities I have yet to see rivaled anywhere except maybe God of War 2. The story is engaging with cinema quality animation and solid acting. The only reason it doesn't get a 10 is because it's too short. However, like a Dynasty Warriors title, this is the kind of game you can replay just for the aimless carnage and sweet takedowns even if you have completed the story (except that DW games have no compelling storyline). Highly recommended. P.S. I personally paid $60 for this game. If you paid $600 like Maks F than yes, you may feel ripped off. ;-)… Expand

    Great acting, Awesome visuals and sound. The framerate slowes down at times. A little bit more levels would have been nice.

    Could have been a good game, but as it turned out now it sadly isnt too much fun. Good visuals at the cost of performance and a repetetice and boring game. Yes i dont like it. 4 out of 10 from me since this game still feels overrated.

    WOW! Anybody who gave this game a 0 on this site is way off! The game is beautiful, engaging and fun to play. Even if you dont buy this game you should rent it!

    Awesome game. Good graphics, great animations. Good story and acting, it's a bit short but that doesn't matter. All M$ honks need to go. Microsoft willing to pay money for us to be happy? Mine is at tech support diagnosed with RROD. Yea, I'm not to happy.

    Great graphics and sound, great cut-scenes and story with solid gameplay. A winning combination that would get full marks if it were a bit longer. That said I'm happy with the quality and wouldn't want it sacrificed for quantity.

The enemies' AI is pathetic, the main character's hair looks godawful, especially next to everything else, the clothes were textured terribly and look like car tarps or plastic, the "heavenly sword" is unbelievably badly designed and makes no sense from the perspective of anyone who knows anything about weaponry, and the game is terrible. I honestly don't understand how anyone could rate this highly unless they're severely biased or trying to justify their purchase. From a game design perspective, it's a failure on almost every level, and the same goes for it graphically.… Expand

    Short it may be, but perfectly formed! The cinematography is the best you will ever see on a computer game and while the overall pure combat is not perfect this is an absolute must have!

Gameplay is monotonous and tilt controlled sections make the game feel disjointed, but it is probably worth playing through to view the acted cut scenes. The moves from each stance flow together beautifully, which in turn makes for a fluid, non-stop action experience (especially the aerial combos...wow). To support this intense gameplay, is a slew of gorgeous enviroments & characters that go beyond anything Anyone who calls the combat "repetitive" in this game, isn't making proper use of the three fighting stances (or the combos). The moves from each stance flow together beautifully, which in turn makes for a fluid, non-stop action experience (especially the aerial combos...wow). To support this intense gameplay, is a slew of gorgeous enviroments & characters that go beyond anything that you've ever seen in HD gaming. In addition to the stellar art-style, you also have entertaining believable characters that propel you face-first into a great storyline (and Nariko's sister, Kai, is perhaps the best animated character that I've ever seen in a game). While it's true that the game can be completed in normal mode in about 8 hours, you can also retry your skills in "hell mode" after the first play-through (and in this mode, it will not take you 8 hours). Personally, this is a game that I want to keep in my collection to show-off (or at least until the sequel), but at the very least...you should at least give this game a rent. That is, if you can pull yourself away from Warhawk for long enough. But trust me, you're not gonna want to miss this Heavenly game.… Expand

    Heavenly Sword's presentation is stellar and nicely ties the action sequences together, but we just wish that the same amount of care that went into these cutscenes were applied to the game's pacing.
