This game is more like Gran Turismo 4.5, not much better than the last GT, which definitely hurts this game. I own both xbox and PS3, and I can for sure tell you that Forza 3 is way better than GT5; From the sounds in Forza, to the modeling of the cars, to the easiness of menus. I do how ever like the driving physics of this game, they are very realistic, and that the only thing that saved this game for me. I would buy this game to own and play, it definitely came of the pedestal for me and was replaced by Forza. Expand

What a waste of 60 bucks. I should have known they would try and make these controls so realistic that they would just would not feel fun. Returned it already. If you masturbate to cars spinning around in neutral white space it might be your game. For me, i like fun, fast racing games. GT5 just ain't for me. Get the new NFS you can actually have fun then.

GT4 or GT5 HD? Below average graphics, dated gameplay , optional licenses, bad online , bad sound, bad menus ... THE WORST GT IN HISTORY! I just dont give it a zero because Sony had the balls to launch this crappy game worldwide.

I am not a `hardcore' racing game fan but I suspect the majority of people thinking about buying this game are not either so perhaps these impressions will be useful to a few who read this. I confess that much of the sophistication of GT5's driving probably goes over my head, and I may be more likely to notice presentation before the difference between good and great driving physics.

I think that a player's enjoyment of the game will depend really on their preparedness to look for the positive aspects of the game and `block out' some of the less positive ones. At the moment I'm actually puzzled at some of the stuff I'm seeing. Upon starting the game one is greeted by an extremely classy introduction to the game. All seems good! Proceeding then to the GT mode, which has traditionally been the main part of Gran Turismo games, one would think that the first race a player would enter would be an impressive showcase for the game. This is not the case though! It is on the track Autumn Ring, which in my view looks dreadful- a track surrounded by what seem to be carboard cutouts of trees, set against a harsh lighting which only seems to exacerbate the impression. All the while, the player may be driving around this track in a car which looks as good as anything ever seen in a video game. For reasons I don't really understand, this side-by-side existence of the superb with the surprisingly bad seems to pervade how the game looks. I think I was not alone in expecting to see something incredible in the graphics department from this game. Surely the long development time was going to lead to this! There're `wow!' moments for sure, but also many things, like the track mentioned above (something else which comes to mind is zombie Jeff Gordon's inability to lip-sync with himself, I hope that never happens to me) which look a lot worse than things found in a game such as Dirt 2. Why the inconsistency? This inconsistency is not just present in the appearance of the tracks of course, as mentioned at length in other reviews. And so, even though I'm thoroughly enjoying most of this game, it is very difficult to avoid moments where things, for lack of a better word, look unfinished. Was this game rushed out? I'm really not sure. Still complaining about the tracks, I note that many of the odd graphical touches exist for tracks which are in both GT5 and GT5 Prologue. In the three years between the games, the developers clearly saw no need to fix what, to them, wasn't broken. It seems then that if you're able to think more like Polyphony Digital do about games, then this game is more likely to be an incredible experience. If though you would like a polished, consistently visually impressive showcase like Uncharted 2 is for its genre, be prepared to be disappointed.

Those are really my only complaints. The single player is basically right out of GT3/4 with many, many added tracks and cars. The graphics (besides shadows) are awesome. Physics are A+ as well. I really do not know what people are complaining about. Heck the online is even good (which I expected to be horrible ala GT5P). What happens when a developer produces a game in 1 year, and then goes on vacation for the next 5 before finally releasing their product? While I'm sure that's not what happened with Polyphony Digital and GT5, it certainly gives us a glimpse of what the outcome of such an act might be. The game feels pieced together in the worst way. Before I get into the meat of the review, I'll simply state - I've played every GT up until this. Any further attempts to assure you of my status as anything other than an Xbox Fanboy would be wasted, I'm well aware. I'd like to say that GT5 is a flawed but excellent game. I can't. What it is is a flawed mediocre game. The driving physics no longer stand head and shoulders above the competition, the car selection, while immense, is deceptive - how many variations of the Nissan Skyline do we really need? And to make matters worse, cars are split between "Standard" and "Premium" varieties. The standard vehicles look like they were rendered 5 years ago, early in the development cycle. They would be passable if this were a launch title. The Premium cars look considerably better, with a level of detail that's hard to appreciate outside Photo Mode. There are far more standard than premium cars, sadly. The backgrounds and tracks are likewise bi-polar - some seem to be taken directly from the PS2, with only a hi-def makeover for improvement, right down to the 2D trees and skyboxes.

And the driving? It's the equal, but not better, of any racing game on the market. But where other racing sims succeed, GT5 fails, for the first time, to distinguish itself, for while the driving physics are superlative as ever, the opponent AI is worse than ever. Other cars seem, at most times, to not even acknowledge your presence on the track, attempting to drive through you on their racing line far too often. And when a collision does occur, it's as if the other car is bolted to the track - good luck trying to get the better of a close scrape, regardless of whether you're in a 1,600lb GT and your opponent is in a 1,040lb hatchback. You will spin out, they will not.

In the end, the things that made GT great are still there, at times. But much of the game feels and looks 5 years old, and the competition has more than caught up. This is no longer a worthwhile offering from a developer that once commanded the genre.

The 800 non premium cars look awful (PS2 GT4 graphics), and many of the original tracks are very bland. The menus are ok but some of the loading times are terrible. Handling is good (but is it that important if your playing on a pad to have a handling system that is apparently brilliant), damage engine is poor. The GT Mode sees the return of "Manager Mode" (now called Spec B) no-one ever used it! It's hard to see what PD have been doing for the last 3yrs. Forza 3 is a racing simulator, and to say that Forza 3 is better than Gran Turismo 5 is a complete joke. Not a funny one either, it just shows how ignorant people can be. I'm not going to go into too much detail about how great this game is, but just know that all the bad reviews are a load of bull, though you should still read the bad reviews, as they are funny. One of them said that "Grand Theft Auto 4" was a 360 exclusive. LMAO. Haha ok, now onto the short review.

Graphics, 10/10, this is the BEST looking game I have ever seen. IT beats Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, and God Of War 3 in terms of graphics. You will basically be asking yourself if this is real car footage, or if its a game. ITs not real, but it sure as hell looks like it.

Gameplay 10/10, the game feels amazing, as if you are really driving a car. I recommend picking up the "Logitech G27 steering wheel" which makes the game even more realistic. Sounds, there amazing, what all can I say? It sounds like your in the car, it sounds like other cars are around you, going at the top speeds. Even better, theres a song list in the game with 100+ songs, and if you don't like any of those songs (trust me you will like them) Then you can listen to music off your own hard drive.
    Sounds are a 10/10

I would like to put more detail into this game, but I am sorry that I don't have the time! I need to go play my copy of Gran Turismo 5. All you need to know is that I give this game a 10/10, thanks for reading, enjoy the best racing simulator ever released, Gran Turismo 5! If u like simplified arcadey-style gameplay then by all means play those titles and stop knocking GT5. However, if u consider yourself a petrolhead, a motoring enthusiast or even a fan of the series, then you will definitely love this game. Everything has been majorly improved and expanded upon from the previous GT titles. The game continuously tests you, makes you think, sweat, and then rewards you. For the sheer amount of days or weeks of enticing gameplay contained within, GT5 is already worth your money. And when you want to take a break from the serious battles versus the sometimes relentless A.I, there's Karting, the Top Gear track, racing online with your mates (which I've played for hours against a friend thousands of miles away and, since the latest patch, it's flawless). There's also a photo mode for a change of scenery and GT TV for the die-hard petrolheads. I doubt that any of the negative reviewers ( twitch-gaming kids? lame-brained twits? Xbot trolls? etc) have even unlocked the rally races on GT mode. The rally cars handle superbly and the rallies play better than the rally game Dirt (and that's a bold claim!) The game has a few minor issues like occasional tearing and sometimes odd A.I, but the promise of regular patches based on the opinions of people who play the game via the PS blogs online, means that GT5 will continue to improve and EVOLVE. There's also a ton of FREE DLC coming our way!
All in all I'm extremely happy with my purchase, GT5 is a great game to enjoyably pass the time when it's too cold to move outside in the bitter weather.

The down parts are extensive loading times, lack of features that all previous GT had (for example 1000 meter test, Apricot Hill circuit, change rims in all cars and so on), not many manufactures to buy new car, plus that they left many models only in used cars... and for some reason it feels like they rushed it out, maybe is cause they did rushed it out and that is why already we got 2 updates.

For sure GT5 (as every GT) will be the benchmark for every racing game till GT6.

Same tuning options as the last four iterations, similar progression, many of the same cars from GT4 and very few new cars. Only a couple cars from the last 2-3 years have made it in so forget about something like an S4/S5 Audi, newer BMWs and Mercs, no CTS-V and lets not forget the lack of Porsche. No way to actually have statistics for tuning, all done by feel! What a mess. Look, I purchased a Playstation 3 for this game, I got screwed! Sony is asleep with it's face in the rice bowl, while Xbox runs away with the online gaming. Sad to say (I'm not a Turn 10 fan) but if Forza 4 is anything close to Forza 3, Gran Turismo is done for! My grand children will laugh when GT 6 comes out.

As others have said, single player mode is a bit I haven't made an account online yet, so I can't comment on online play. I think the number one thing I dislike about this game is load time. I probably spend just as much time waiting for the game to load as I do racing, even after taking 50 mins to install to the hard drive. But that's the price you pay. Overall, it's a great racing simulator. If you love cars and racing, get GT5. If you want an exciting game, go for something else, like Mario Kart. Expand

I'll be straightforward by saying that I've owned an Xbox since 2007 and have both Forza games for that system while I only recently bought the PS3 for the purpose of playing GT5. My honest opinion is that GT5 is a solid racing game with plenty of cars to choose from. As a fan of muscle cars I was delighted to see the '64 pontiac GTO, Dodge Superbee, and of course the '69 Camaro SS as well as several great late model cars. While I could list my issues with the game I think it all boils down the the fact that GT5, with it's long development and budget, did not in my opinion put out a superior product. There are things it does better than Forza 3 and vice versa. However, I think I can say that any fan of racing games that does not own a PS3 can get an equally satisfying experience from Forza 3. In the same regard, if I owned a PS3 but not an Xbox I would definitely say that there was no need to buy an Xbox to go racing since GT5 will satisfy. Bottom line: GT5 is a great game but it hasn't set itself apart as the superior racer. As far as I'm concerned, GT5 and Forza 3 are on equal playing fields.

The game hasn't tried hard enough to compete with the likes of Forza in a lot of huge smaller ways. The online components and features simply just pale in comparison. It doesn't have even remotely close to the same competition level with multiple leaderboards for EVERY single track and event. It doesn't have a dedicated Time Trial mode outside of "Practice" which encourages you to beat your own times...not the rest of the world's. Navigation is horrible through cluttered menus, and I'm simply spoiled by Forza's ability to complete simple tasks like simply chagine cars before each event which suggested options that fit the race, instead of forcing you to go to your garage, sort through them and then get in one. The graphics are hit and miss. Sometimes I think "wow", but other times there are things flickering all over the screen and it looks noticeably super-imposed. While my Forza comparisons seem direct, I'm still considering this a completely different game. GT5 is very much the "wine" game where you savor the flavor and embark on a bit slower task of learning about cars and participating in a lot of things that celebrate the history of cars. It's saving grace and one thing Forza cannot do is the Seasonal Events where my noted lack of online features is contradicted a bit. This gives a constant life to the game that the static campaign cannot. I'll undoubtedly still play this game and consider it one of the best racers out there, but its not the best. It's a good game, but this one of those games that is supposed to be flagship and sell consoles. Its just not up to those standards. They need to let a lot of the 'old' go with this series and reinvent it in 6, period. Expand

That said, one word sums up my experience with GT5 - mediocre. I have played this series since the very first entry on the PS1 and each one has gotten incrementally better, that is not the case here, however. This is essentially GT4 with a few gameplay additions, some of which don't pan out so well. Graphically, this game is all over the place. Sometimes it is stunning, other times not so much. The game has an over-saturated color palette which takes away from the realism. Also shadows are jagged messes. There is an awful lot of screen-tearing, even in the little pre-race ticker at the top of the screen. New tracks look pretty good but older ones have been ported over from previous titles, their appearance only bumped up a bit by the higher resolution. Track-side objects are one-dimensional cutouts and textures are very last-gen. As opposed to adding to the polygon count of an object, a flat texture is merely draped over a crude shape ( guardrails, etc. ) and we're expected to be blown away by these things. Text on track signage is jagged and blurry. If you want to see just how poor this game looks when you aren't blowing by at high speeds, just open a replay, pause, and walk around the track. This, however, isn't the worst part. Cars, the reason for playing a racing/driving game, are the biggest letdown here. Everyone boasts "It has more than a thousand cars, that's way better than Forza." Wrong. Each and every one of the cars in Forza has the same quality and attention to detail, all can be tuned and upgraded, and all have an in-car dash view. In GT5, cars are split into premium and standard models. Only premium ( there are only 200 ) cars can be tuned, are truly current-gen in detail, and have a dash view. The other 800 are ported over from the PS2 games and they show it. These cars are blocky, poorly textured, and stick out like a sore thumb when racing alongside a premium model. Sure, Forza has less cars, but at least their quality is the same across the board. The menus are antiquated relics, they are page after page of poorly-implemented and confusing static screens. The soundtrack is a nauseating mix of smooth-jazz and lounge music with some terrible rock thrown in for the kiddies. You can use your own background music but it is so difficult to do so you might just turn off the BMG altogether. Opponent AI is laughable, picking a strict racing line and sticking to it, running you off course if you are where they need to be. This game also doesn't obey the laws of physics some times, if you ram another car, they don't budge, in fact, it slows your car down. If they bump you, however, you'll go flying off-course, only to be stopped by invisible walls mind you, or your car will come to a stop. Tuning and damage modeling are basic at most, and not available for all cars. B-Spec is touted as a sort of RPG where you control AI drivers from the pits. This is also very basic and incredibly boring. The Course-Creator is nothing of the sort, it merely lets you make some changes to existing tracks. All in all this is the same game you've been playing for years. No upgrade in the driving mechanics, the basic formula remains the same, and the visuals are hit or miss. This is not a game that should have taken half a decade to make and it is certainly not worth the wait. It is a very vanilla experience that only the most devout GT fans (not to be confused with fans of driving genre as a whole ) will enjoy. Half a decade and over sixty-million dollars later we are given an incomplete game steeped in tradition, who's Japanese developers are too stubborn to accept that they are lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of design and not humble enough to learn from mistakes and take cues from others as to what works in today's market. This is too little too late for me, and this sloppy approach to gaming and total lack of care for what we as gamers want and deserve is really insulting . Expand

From the SLLLLOOOOW game play, the partially ridiculous handling of some of the cars (the Elise in the Top Gear Challenge, or the NASCAR challenges), to the ludicrous tedium of going through a "career" mode, and how overly-priced most of these "premium" cars are. Also, please include that you are basically playing "find the car" in the used car lot (the GT4 used car lot was a WAY better way of doing this), and that is only for the 800 sub-standard PS2 ported "standard" cars. The upgrades are incomplete, and the AI is driving on a track, and regardless of how you race, the AI will continue along their predisposed tracks until you jam them from behind and spin out. And who can forget the atrocious "B-Spec" mode...Just imagine this...You've spent most of the day racing against mentally-inept AI, just to spend countless hours TELLING a mentally-inept driver HOW TO DRIVE! It's the most aggravating portion of this game! INCLUDING when you have a car that YOU have decimated everyone in A-Spec to have the same idiot AI you had to drive around, controlling your car and driving it into everything!

But it does have some good points. The premium cars look amazing...But again, i would rather have 500-800 premium cars, than 200 premium cars and 1000, or so, PS2 HD ported cars. The tracks are few, but they like good PS2 HD ports. Like I said, it's a decent game...But it's a HUGE disappointment, I agree with someone's opinion on PD, that they just haphazardly put together most of this game in 1 year, then spent the rest of their 6 years on Sony's pocket-book traveling the world, hyping their game.

So, rent first. You might like it...But with FM3 out, I don't think this game isn't up to that level of goodness (as it should be).

Unfortunately, the game doesn't have a consistent level of polish. The new content like the Toscana Dirt tracks are spectacular while the obviously older content that was imported from the previous PS2 games sadly doesn't look much better than it did on PS2, only its in high definition. Damage modeling & self shadowing on premium vehicles is also of a disappointing standard.

The AI seems to be improved, when cornering I noticed that cars in front and behind me were conscious of my presence and didn't easily let me smash into them and vice versa - very different than in previous GT games. I haven't played enough to really test the AI, but there's definitely improvement.

The physics also feel much more refined and you can almost feel the transfer of weight as you maneuver your machine.

I haven't decided if I like this better than Forza 3 yet, I'll need to play some more first. Both are great games for different reasons. Forza certainly has a higher level of polish, but polish isn't everything, it's just the icing on the cake.

Overall, great game, but unless you're a hardcore motoring enthusiast it may be hard to overlook the game's short comings.

This title has been in the making for years and I can safely say that it HAS been worth the wait. The level of immersion is just amazing (as expected in a GT title). The more you get into the game, the more you begin to realize all the different types of races and large variety of vehicles you can toy around with. While the level of detail between Premium and Standard vehicles may be apparent when you sit down and analyze them, the physics engine is what matters and no matter the type of car, you can rest assured that the performance is very accurate to its real world counter part.

Unlike previous GT titles, this entry doesn't require you to take the various license tests but being a fan of the series I went ahead and completed all which even at this point in the series, you can learn a thing or two.

The inclusion of NASCAR and WRC vehicles gives it a wider range of tracks and appeal. Unlike 'rushed' reviews that claimed the damage mechanic didn't truly exist, it DOES exist but you have to earn it (unlock it fully) as you progress in the game. This allows for the player to become more familiar with the courses/tracks as well as the handling of the cars so that when full damage is in effect, you don't pay dearly by losing races or having to pay for repairs time and time again.

The multiplayer aspect is a work in progress in my mind but the possibilities are many.

Overall the title demonstrates once again that it is indeed THE real driving simulator and the wait was very worth it.

4 years of wait and it's finally here. Did the wait been worth it for those who waited, YES. Is it the best looking game ever made on a console, NO. Did the wait been worth it for those who waited, YES. Is it the best looking game ever made on a console, NO. Does it simulate as near as possible the reality, YES. To be honest three months ago I've never played any GT games, only heard of 'em as a difficult game and as the KING of racing simulation game because they weren't like any other games in which you can take a ''U'' turn at 300 km/h without any braking. I pre-ordered it and then I bought GT3 and GT4 to be more familiar with the handling, and man that was so addicting that I just played 2 hours of my COD blackOPS. As a mechanical engineer I loved every aspect of customization of those two games and with every thing I seen and heard of GT5 on the web, I was sure that GT5 will be The GOD of racing, well that's true but for 19,32% of the game (witch means 200 out of1035 cars). Don't take me wrong here, what I said is for 20% of the cars every thing (graphics, physics, tuning, handling) is the best with compared to any other racing or car simulating game and that easily over Forza and PGR4 (for the blind xbox fanboys I have to say I really love my Forza as a Game not as a simulator). For the 80% left, well I have to say I'm a little bit disappointed cause the day b4 the game came out I was playing GT4, and when I play for the first time GT5 with my very first STANDARD car (a Subaru IMPREZA Sedan WRX STi '94, my favorite car from GT4), the first thing I noticed and didn't want to believe, but my sister, who has any interest in gaming and graphics, made me realize by saying : why are you still playing GT4 didn't you just bought GT5. Man that was ridiculous, I mean waiting 4 years for a game witch costs over 60 million $ to make, and they put a HD version of PS2 cars. Man what was Yamauchi doing all these years, was he taking a cup of vine with Ferrari's directors on red carpets. Did all of the 60 million budget go to the publicity campaigns. Personally I take that as an insult to my intelligence and to my love for this series. Now that the little crisis is past lets back to those 800 cars and some tracks that PD acknowledged that they take 'em from GT4 and polished 'em. For me graphics are important, cause I'm very visual and I don't think I'm the only one here, and knowing that to have my premium car with graphic's power of PS3 I have to be level 30 when I'm just level 10, it's a little bit annoying. But for those purists, and I think there is a lot of 'em too, that the game-play is more important than the graphics, those 800 cars are fabulous, because it's not that they are ugly, no not at all, they just don't have textures and they suffer from some aliasing, but the physics, handling an tuning are as realist as their Premium brothers. For the simulation part, I have anything to say, except : WOOOOOOOOOOOW. As I said as an engineer I can feel every little tuning that I did. Every car has its own and unique characteristics : sounds, weighs and handling. And for that I really think that GT5 deserve its : THE REAL SIMULATION. The menus aren't difficult, their just different from other games, but that's not a deal barker, cause you'll be used to understand it really quick. A last thing about graphics, I hear a lot a people complain about it is damages, GT series never had it and that not prevent GT to be the KING. I mean think about it one second, what happen in other games when you crash... nothing, you wait a little and your car flash and spawns back like it had nothing. What are you complaining about people, this is a SIMULATION not a game. If you want damages or destruction in simulation, well guess what, you have to pay a lot of money to repair it from ground because that's is the real thing, the same in real life when you crash you have to repair it or to buy another one. That's not funny in real life and I don't think you want to pay extra-credits, witch's not easy to earn, to re-buy your Ferrari enzo that cost you 1,5 million credits. Any way in this game you don't have to touch any other car, that's why you disqualify instantly when you hit other cars when trying to earn your license. So calm down people and if you want to see your car crashes, well go buy BurnOut and have fun. To finish this I have to say that this is again the KING of racing genres, because this is 5 game in one : F1, NASCAR, Regular races in town, kart and dirt. So every PS3 owner should have this, cause this is not vulgar racing car, this is a culture, this is a religion this is the REAL SIMULATION. P.S. My score is a 8.5 but as others I gave it 10 for those insignificant 0's. Expand

I was once an amateur street racer and sometimes autocrosser. The problem with racing games is that they're too realistic and not forgiving enough. When I'm on the street I can hear my tires squealing when they're reaching the limit, I can feel my back end getting loose in the corner which encourages me to mash the gas. Without the car telling me these things I feel blind, but theI was once an amateur street racer and sometimes autocrosser. Without the car telling me these things I feel blind, but the excellent physics of the game demands I respond to this information that, if it's giving it to me, I don't understand. The tires squeal all the time, I can't ever look into turns to see where I'm going, and the mod prices and custom options are ridiculous - the same for every car. If you want a good racing game there is still no game better than Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed. If you have a panoramic TV a racing simulation pod, this is probably one of the better racing games on the planet . . . if you don't it's merely a fairly interesting romp through flash cars and bad ass tracks. As much as I love this game there is 1 thing that really bugs me about it, the car list. 18 Rx-7s, 42 Skylines, and 18 S2000. I mean I like those cars but do we really need 42 different Skylines? I just think Polyphony Digital could have added cars that some enthusiast could get excited for.

Unfinished game that falls flat on so many levels it's hard to swallow. True GT fans like GTUniversity and true Playstation fans like Playstation Magazine are slamming the game for what it is, especially now with competitors that have been out for a year with 3x less dev time and resources, like Forza 3, who are much better in most categories. On the contrary, it seems only PS3 fanboys areUnfinished game that falls flat on so many levels it's hard to swallow. So many bugs on release of this game that they have a huge list on the PS3 forums,. very disopinting for a game that took so long and is nothing like the previous PS2 quality releases, how any review could of give this game 100 is just a joke, how did they not see the bugs, the terrible sounds(not even any tunnel echo and screen tearing etc ?..

Anyone Comparing this to Forza 4 would not

Anyone Comparing this to Forza 4 would not be being fair on as Forza 4 is so much of a better game it's in a different class to this. I recommend Forza 4 as the better game if you have both consoles.

We love Gran Turismo dearly but it isn't the game we hoped it would be. [Feb 2011, p.72]

An unusually complex driving game that demands real dedication and only fully reveals its true power once you've put the mileage in. [Jan 2011, p.108]

GT5 is pretty much exactly what everybody expected it to be. Overhyped maybe because of the unprecedented delay in its release, but spot on with its goals.
