Best racing game on the market with update 2.0 =) Very happy with the quality of the update, has definitely taken this game from "good" to "great". Definitely bought the DLC.

A very fun realistic racer but some parts will leave you pissed off espically after racing the same circuits over and over again grinding for money for the right cars and tune ups.

Yes, there are some flaws but still its next to GT3 as one of the best racing games I've ever played. There's plenty of races to do - both in Aspec and seasonal events, the graphics are insanely good. For those wondering about the standard cars I can reassure you they don't even look bad :) Online is fun - although I personally prefer the offline elements. Definitely recommended.

Anyone Comparing this to Forza 4 would not be being fair on as Forza 4 is so much of a better game it's in a different class to this. I recommend Forza 4 as the better game if you have both consoles.

A true racing sim, lives up to most of the hype, although I was expecting the best racing experience ever, this doesn't fail to deliver with visually stunning graphics, smooth driving and a all time blast.

My main issue with GT5 is that for all the Simulation goodness it might do, it's not really a very interesting or exciting game. Racing is terrifyingly boring; the sounds are kinda muffled and the graphics leave to be desired, to be honest. The fact that you have to unlock damage and physical features by leveling up is beyond ridiculous...

If you have spent more then your house's worth on racing apparel you probably own it to yourself to play it, but if you are looking to an exciting racing game with realistic feel, to have fun, look elsewhere.

I don't own an Xbox 360, so I have never played Forza, and can't really say how it stands next to GT5. If I had to point at a replacement, Shift 2: Unleashed (Need for Speed's simulation -ish branch) is where it's at for me, as a gamer, not as a driving simulator enthusiast.

Game play - nothing new , but i must say when you desactivate the assistance and everything , it gets better (that's a little tip right there). Then there's it's lifetime - if you do every liscences to get gold it's at least a 6-7 hours , then there are the 6-7 race "difficulty" and thats at least 60h+ gameplay and then there is the special events and the season events that gets you a good 10-20 hours at least . so ... you can't say you tested the game until you get at least to professionnal race class ( 10-20ish hours). Last , the soundtrack ..aint got much to say about it , its nice , not distracting you but makes the race a little bit nicer.

    I Loved it , aint worth 10 , but 8 is a base .... until update 2.0...

What a ridiculous release! A half finished game which brings nothing new to the table. I waited 6 or so years for this and for it to be such a disappointment is beyond me. Did they really import the cars directly from the ps2 version? Sorry Sony but you've been outdone by Microsoft's Forza chain.

It's just excellent. The best game by far available in PS3. Updates keep coming even 1 year after its debut and there are plenty of challenges to face. AI might not be as hard as it could have been, but there are still some challenging tracks and endurance races. Excellent menu of cars and races. If you get a wheel, it is an absolutely overwhelming experience. Over the top.

Very bad development there - seems as though the game developers are trying to make life difficult. I will also point out that maintenance of your cars cost too many credits, and once you have repaired damages - you have have to spend the same amount of credits after the next race. This game needs a massive investment of your time - and at the end of the day its just a game! i would rather spend that time Go karting in real life! not in my bedroom!!. You wouldn't be able to enjoy this game playing it part time its more like a full time job. Expand

With the game installed on the hard drive the loading times are still atrocious. Loading from just one menu to the next can be upwards of 45 seconds. And the menu design itself is horrendous. When you finally get to the driving it is as good as you'd expect from a Gran Turismo game. So it has that going for it, which is the most important part. I can't say it makes up for its flaws though. The AI is depressingly bad. You can sit at a dead stop in the middle of a straight away and the AI will run right into you. Graphically the game is both good and bad. The Premium cars are really stunning, but there are very few of them. And the ones that are premium seems arbitrarily chosen. You have cars like the Volkswagon Schwimmwagon which is premium, but a car like the Veyron isn't. I'll never understand that. The sound in the game is another gripe. The cars really sound uninspired as well. The game is a good racer, but really leaves a lot to be desired in virtually every other area. Expand

I especially dont understand how somebody could review a game low because of the music; When I race GT5, I hear Pearl Jam and Soundgarden as my background music; if you decide to stick with the stock music (over 80 something tracks; I don't use any of them but many of them are very good) when it gives you the option to use your own, then your obviously biased against the game for one reason or another.

The graphics are top notch the majority of the time, with occasional headscratchers regarding standard level cars; but the majority of standard level cars look as good as what you'll see in forza 3 (and with the lower anti-aliasing; forza's all look less crisp) - but when I see everything in view crisp and clear, I consider that top notch. Especially when keeping 60 fps the whole time. To be honest, I've had GT5 since release; and I still cant put it down. I purchased Forza 3 a week after I got my copy of GT5; I traded it in before christmas. When it comes to a driving simulation, GT5 is at the top; its far from perfect, but I cant see myself playing anything else. Highly reccomend you check out Classic Game Room's review of both GT5 and Forza 3; It'll give you a good account of the pro's and con's of each game. Whether you enjoy one or the other is up to taste.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A very good game to play, and the attention to detail is stunning (but it's not perfect). It is almost a perfect simulator if you want to get as close to the real thing as possible. But one thing that disappoints me (and, I'm sure others) is how the 800 of those 1,000 cars are standard cars (standard cars do not have interiors that can be viewed while driving, and the attention to detail isn't entirely there). It also bothers me how some of today's cars (the Bugatti Veyron, shockingly) are the standard cars. Also, most of those 800 cars were ripped straight out of GT4. Very lazy, and downright disappointing for five years in the works. The AI is also quite laughable. If you are all racing a Ferrari F10, it's not a challenge at all. It's almost UN-realistic racing against them. I can pull off a Lewis Hamilton on them better than Lewis HIMSELF can. Expand

Haven't played GT since GT2 which was a massive game in the days. Spending my time on xbox with Project Gotham and Forza. Ditched my xbox and opted for a PS3 and found myself without any good racing games (rally games excluded). Finally went and bought GT5, which I had been looking forward to for quite some time. There is a lot of negatives in this game - presentation is horrible and inconsistent for one. Loading times, spelling errors (says installing when you're loading a track, come on, really..) and it seems like there were several animators who never got to meet each other, as small animations vary throughout the menus. It's not hard to find things though, that's pretty nice, it's harder to exit menus/areas as it requires an extensive amount of going back through menus.

When all that is said, let's get to the racing part, this is where the game really owns up to the brand name. Racing is fun, exiting, pretty realistic and yet easily accissible for beginners. The graphics are really smooth and very very nice. There is no doubt that the racing part of this game is without equal on the PS3 (imo). I can't wait to race some more, look at more cars, upgrade, take my licenses etc.

Some coherence in the menu system and presentation would have pushed this game to a straight 10, which makes it hard to rate.

    10/10 for the racing bit
    6/10 for presentation
    10/10 for graphics
    8/10 for sounds
9/10 for gameplay (i don't really get the b-spec option...)

makes it 8.6 in my opinion, so I have to push it up to a 9, though it's a small nine and a big 8.

    Buy it !

Not all cars can be bought in the dealership instead, most of the cars can be randomly seen in the used dealership. You need to wait one in-game day for new cars to show up in the used dealership. I tried online and i cant barely go back for the second time. I didn't find the online user interface ( user interface in general for the whole game) to be friendly. So much options are crammed into the screen and it's such a big game that loading times were still long even if i installed the game.

The AI of this game is really dumb. I got through the game without any problem. This game is so easy for new and specially advance players.

All in all, this game plays well, but it is a disappointment for me. They could have done it better and hopefully Gran Turismo 6 will be what Gran Turismo 5 should have been.

A decent disappointment. I was reading some of the reviews, and it's spot on, the game is outdated in EVERY facet! Also, please include that you are basically playing "find the car" in the used car lot (the GT4 used car lot was a WAY better way of doing this), and that is only for the 800 sub-standard PS2 ported "standard" cars. The upgrades are incomplete, and the AI is driving on a track, and regardless of how you race, the AI will continue along their predisposed tracks until you jam them from behind and spin out. And who can forget the atrocious "B-Spec" mode...Just imagine this...You've spent most of the day racing against mentally-inept AI, just to spend countless hours TELLING a mentally-inept driver HOW TO DRIVE! It's the most aggravating portion of this game! INCLUDING when you have a car that YOU have decimated everyone in A-Spec to have the same idiot AI you had to drive around, controlling your car and driving it into everything!

But it does have some good points. The premium cars look amazing...But again, i would rather have 500-800 premium cars, than 200 premium cars and 1000, or so, PS2 HD ported cars. The tracks are few, but they like good PS2 HD ports. Like I said, it's a decent game...But it's a HUGE disappointment, I agree with someone's opinion on PD, that they just haphazardly put together most of this game in 1 year, then spent the rest of their 6 years on Sony's pocket-book traveling the world, hyping their game.

So, rent first. You might like it...But with FM3 out, I don't think this game isn't up to that level of goodness (as it should be).

I'm not even going to try and deny that GT5 is massively flawed: it's graphically inconsistent, ranging from unbelievably beautiful to downright embarrassing at times, navigating the menus is a chore and the game seems strangely lackadaisical in terms of imposing some structure in the racing events, so nothing prevents you from leaving a pack of Nissan 350z's choking on the dust you kickI'm not even going to try and deny that GT5 is massively flawed: it's graphically inconsistent, ranging from unbelievably beautiful to downright embarrassing at times, navigating the menus is a chore and the game seems strangely lackadaisical in terms of imposing some structure in the racing events, so nothing prevents you from leaving a pack of Nissan 350z's choking on the dust you kick up in a heavily modded Murcielago. But the only thing i really have to say, and i know a lot of people feel the same way, is that, to this day, I feel compelled to play this game for at least a couple of minutes every other day. maybe it's precisely because it is so devoid of personality and goal-oriented 'videogaminess'; it invites you to set your own challenges, create your own experience. To this day i still discover cars that i didn't know were in the game, and it appeals to me on an aesthetic level, to discover a classic car that you had forgotten about, buying it up and trying it out on a track. For me this game is less about the Veyrons and Zondas than about the Giulias and E-types, or trying to get every TVR in the game. Automotive Pokemon, if you will.
The handling model is, to be frank, the yardstick by which i judge all other racing games, it feels incredible to drive, and while the racing may feel boring at times, i dare you to try and do a lap around the Nordschleife in the Suzuki Escudo Trial car without peeing in your pants a little.
This is the thing, it doesn't try and stylise or embellish anything, if a car is boring to drive, that's probably because it really is. As a music fan, the fact that i can bypass the lamentable in game music and use my own playlist is bliss, even if the funk that plays in the used car dealership has become a running joke in my household, with everyone playing air slap-bass when it comes on.
So, yes, it's a flawed, insipid, inconsistent mess of a 'game', and every so often i wish some kind of expansion would come out that would make it as perfect as it wants to be - i wish damage was a thing in this game, i wish the track editor wasn't such a pointless waste, i wish the standard cars just got a minor touch up - but ultimately GT5 is like a family member that you still love despite knowing how they lame they can be.

I love Gran Turismo 5 and highly consider it the best driving game ever made. With 1,031 cars and 20+ tracks with 71 variations, this is one not to be missed by any car enthusiast or car funatic. Driving and racing is incredible, premium cars are jaw dropping beauty and are absolutely gorgeous inside and out. Even the standard cars look nice and the damage model isn't bad either, but for me I like my car how it is, and I don't want to see it all banged up, but damage is a first for the GT series, and it's pretty good for that matter. I don't put the game down for its standard cars or damage model like many have, because I know, if they could make all the cars premium, they would have. The GT series is my favorite franchise in the world, and therefore my favorite game on the PlayStation 3. It's about collecting all different kinds of cars, whether they're classics all the way up to exotics and having a great time driving and racing them. It's about loving cars, and the feel that you're actually driving the car, is absolutely incredible. In fact, GT5 is so realistic, that I don't even consider it a video game. In GT5, you're actually driving the car. There should've been many, many more events available, but there just isnt.. Its very limiting.. The Multiplayer is pretty good,in the fact that it simply has it,& racing is fun,but its very hard to sat up balanced races, with the cars not having a 'performance index'(a rating of total performance)as the Forza games have, putting them into very specific classes.Instead your struggling to get races that work,& give people a decent choice of cars at the same time.Setting up races is awquard too,as you cant set up your race, rles, restrictions etc 'before' opening your lobby.you can only do it after you open it,making everyone wait while you do it all, frustrating them,& making them quit the lobby in bordom while nothings happening for them.Maybe this can be fixed,as maybe the absence of a performance index,we'll have to see.Another positive thing i can say about the game though,is the way it lets you use a custom playlist off your Hard Drive.Even allowing you to randomise the songs, which is more of a big deal than it sounds. Its a shame Forza doesnt offer this..But one thing Forza does offer,is the ability to have CPU controlled cars in split screen races.even allowing you to make teams, but all that GT5 offers,is a rather dull 'Player 1 Vs Player 2'.REALLY? in this day & age?.. Ah well.. Overall,Its a game worth getting if you like circuit racing games like this, but it does have its flaws, which as i said, you wouldn't expect from a game this long in the making.. Expand

One could say this game is too similar compared to the previous games, however it has so much more depth. It now has NASCAR, rally and go carts in addition to usual highly polished racing. Forza 3 on xbox 360 has better damage and more modifications for the cars, but has less content overal. Great game.

With no actual racing taking place in this game, it's quite a failure as a racing game. But that's not all - if you played GT4 and GT5 Prologue, there's almost nothing new in this game. It offers the EXACT same gameplay experience as GT4 - except GT4 had a long and deep career mode. GT5 has a short and utterly disappointing one. Before long you find yourself doing nothing but repeating the same races over and over and over just to earn money to buy cars. And it's twice as boring because there are almost no new tracks in this game. And you're just winning every race every time. This is the most overhyped and disappointing game of this generation. Six years to make this?!?! Any other developer could have finished this up in 18 months. Expand

The game hasn't tried hard enough to compete with the likes of Forza in a lot of huge smaller ways. The online components and features simply just pale in comparison. It doesn't have even remotely close to the same competition level with multiple leaderboards for EVERY single track and event. It doesn't have a dedicated Time Trial mode outside of "Practice" which encourages you to beat your own times...not the rest of the world's. Navigation is horrible through cluttered menus, and I'm simply spoiled by Forza's ability to complete simple tasks like simply chagine cars before each event which suggested options that fit the race, instead of forcing you to go to your garage, sort through them and then get in one. The graphics are hit and miss. Sometimes I think "wow", but other times there are things flickering all over the screen and it looks noticeably super-imposed. While my Forza comparisons seem direct, I'm still considering this a completely different game. GT5 is very much the "wine" game where you savor the flavor and embark on a bit slower task of learning about cars and participating in a lot of things that celebrate the history of cars. It's saving grace and one thing Forza cannot do is the Seasonal Events where my noted lack of online features is contradicted a bit. This gives a constant life to the game that the static campaign cannot. I'll undoubtedly still play this game and consider it one of the best racers out there, but its not the best. It's a good game, but this one of those games that is supposed to be flagship and sell consoles. Its just not up to those standards. The game has it's own "essence" which I love very much. It is most definitely a refreshing experience. I personally hate when a game series sells-out, and completely redesigns the game to cater for a wider audience, resulting in a loss of identity. This game stays true to its roots, so if you don't like the GT series from the beginning, I would not reccomend it. The music is very classy, and fun (hopefully you like Jazz like me!) There are soem annoyances. The multiplayer component is not that fun for me. The single player is weirdly inbalanced. You find youself racing against '67 cars with an Audi R8 Race car with 1000 horsepower. The damage model is pathetic, however, this is not a big deal for me.

If you want a slick, classy racing sim with amazing physics and graphics, this is for you. If you want a refreshing change from mainstream, classless gaming, this is for you!

On onehand, the city maps and premium cars look stunning. On the other hand, regular terrain maps look generic and even bad at points, and standard cars aren't much better off than the old cars from GT4. Not to mention, even in premium cars, the shadows on the dashboard are extremely choppy. So what you get is a game that from certain angles looks breathtaking, and from others looks.. well.. bad. Another problem that's been brought up quite often is the menu system: the first time you load up GT mode, you'll feel intimidated and lost. Sure, you get used to it, but it was quite a hassle on day 1 trying to figure out how to play with a friend. The lounge music isn't all that bad and I prefer it to the heavy metal we're often littered with, but it doesn't really fit. There are plenty of events in GT5, but only a few "special events". These include things like NASCAR, rally, and kart racing. They're all extremely fun, but have very little in the way of variety. It almost feels like an incomplete DLC at times. My biggest gripe with the game has to be the collisions. Commercials led me to believe that the collisions in GT5 were extremely realistic, and I imagined damaged tires, dended fenders, oil leaks, the lot. Instead, what I get is a little bump to the side and some off-steering for maybe 10 seconds. The standard cars suffer no visible damage, while premium ones can get their hood dented after a couple 100mph crashes into barriers. The actual recoil from hitting another car is minimal. This was extremely disappointing. Some write this off, saying that you shouldn't be crashing to begin with. Maybe so, but in that case this should NOT have been a feature to "hype up".
I've been focusing on the bads for a while, but there are plenty of goods. The game has a LOT of content, and is a genuinely fun driving experience. It's just that, given the wait/hype/etc., it could and should have been better.

The standard cars make up 75 % (of the 1000+ cars) and while they look fine they pale in comparison to the premium cars which is a small grip that I have. Single player races can get a little repetitive if you want to grind for cash but online races make up for that. B-Spec mode where you control a team of drivers is nice when you want to multi task something else while you play.

That said, one word sums up my experience with GT5 - mediocre. I have played this series since the very first entry on the PS1 and each one has gotten incrementally better, that is not the case here, however. This is essentially GT4 with a few gameplay additions, some of which don't pan out so well. Graphically, this game is all over the place. Sometimes it is stunning, other times not so much. The game has an over-saturated color palette which takes away from the realism. Also shadows are jagged messes. There is an awful lot of screen-tearing, even in the little pre-race ticker at the top of the screen. New tracks look pretty good but older ones have been ported over from previous titles, their appearance only bumped up a bit by the higher resolution. Track-side objects are one-dimensional cutouts and textures are very last-gen. As opposed to adding to the polygon count of an object, a flat texture is merely draped over a crude shape ( guardrails, etc. ) and we're expected to be blown away by these things. Text on track signage is jagged and blurry. If you want to see just how poor this game looks when you aren't blowing by at high speeds, just open a replay, pause, and walk around the track. This, however, isn't the worst part. Cars, the reason for playing a racing/driving game, are the biggest letdown here. Everyone boasts "It has more than a thousand cars, that's way better than Forza." Wrong. Each and every one of the cars in Forza has the same quality and attention to detail, all can be tuned and upgraded, and all have an in-car dash view. In GT5, cars are split into premium and standard models. Only premium ( there are only 200 ) cars can be tuned, are truly current-gen in detail, and have a dash view. The other 800 are ported over from the PS2 games and they show it. These cars are blocky, poorly textured, and stick out like a sore thumb when racing alongside a premium model. Sure, Forza has less cars, but at least their quality is the same across the board. The menus are antiquated relics, they are page after page of poorly-implemented and confusing static screens. The soundtrack is a nauseating mix of smooth-jazz and lounge music with some terrible rock thrown in for the kiddies. You can use your own background music but it is so difficult to do so you might just turn off the BMG altogether. Opponent AI is laughable, picking a strict racing line and sticking to it, running you off course if you are where they need to be. This game also doesn't obey the laws of physics some times, if you ram another car, they don't budge, in fact, it slows your car down. If they bump you, however, you'll go flying off-course, only to be stopped by invisible walls mind you, or your car will come to a stop. Tuning and damage modeling are basic at most, and not available for all cars. B-Spec is touted as a sort of RPG where you control AI drivers from the pits. This is also very basic and incredibly boring. The Course-Creator is nothing of the sort, it merely lets you make some changes to existing tracks. All in all this is the same game you've been playing for years. No upgrade in the driving mechanics, the basic formula remains the same, and the visuals are hit or miss. This is not a game that should have taken half a decade to make and it is certainly not worth the wait. It is a very vanilla experience that only the most devout GT fans (not to be confused with fans of driving genre as a whole ) will enjoy. Half a decade and over sixty-million dollars later we are given an incomplete game steeped in tradition, who's Japanese developers are too stubborn to accept that they are lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of design and not humble enough to learn from mistakes and take cues from others as to what works in today's market. This is too little too late for me, and this sloppy approach to gaming and total lack of care for what we as gamers want and deserve is really insulting . Expand

While the career mode and tournaments feel disjointed and lack intamacy it's the core element - the actual racing and driving feels at times underdone and somewhat lifeless. Especially compared to games like Forza which feel a bit more exciting. If there were no cars to collect and no upgrades to spend credits on it would likely become quite boring. In saying that there is great satisfaction in getting into a nice rythm and shaving time off your laps with good driving and tuning. Unfortunately, as hard as I try I really see no reason why this game should have been in development for so long. Nothing in the game engine, physics, game modes or anything justifies that: this is so dangerously close to GT5 Prologue that it should have come out one year later at most.
Furthermore, the whole fuss about Gran Turismo finally sporting actual car damage turns out as a flat out hoax: a twelve year old toying around with Photoshop for five minutes would have come up with pretty much the same bumper deformations players can "enjoy" in GT5. Not to mention the ridiculous crash physics and sounds..
This said, to virgin eyes GT5 can still be little short of amazing. The variety of cars and tracks can keep you going for a long while, even in the absence of credible AI competition and notwithstanding some minor (and some not so minor) graphical glitches. If you're happy just driving about comparing different makes and models and touring the car dealerships, GT5 will be no disappointment.
All in all, I would rate this a very good game if it was called anything but GT5: however, this being the case, I can only rate it mediocre. Such a long wait and so many dedicated gamers deserved much, much more.

Overall, it's a great racing simulator. If you love cars and racing, get GT5. If you want an exciting game, go for something else, like Mario Kart. Expand

It's the botched small details that annoy me. Holding a steering wheel with your thumbs sticking up just looks stupid. The paddle shifting animations showing driver's hands clipping through the steering wheels are unacceptable and most trees and some backgrounds look like they were rendered last century. That being said, the cars look great and the handling is typical Gran Turismo.

I don't understand why people hate the music. I for one thought the jazz/lounge music for menus was spot on. There are times during races where things look so real, but other times when it looks plain awful. Photo Mode is where the graphics really shine. In terms of gameplay there's not much to do besides racing and tuning. Customization is focused more towards performance than aesthetics. But one of the best, and most enjoyable things about this game is, surprisingly, the go-karting. Its the physics that make it so enjoyable.

If you want a racing game that lets you customize cars, this isn't it. If you want a game that simulates driving, the pure joy of it, this is the perfect game.

Half the cars you can't buy new

But the biggest one for me is that you don't need driving skill, if you have the best car in that class, your going to win, if you don't your not gonna win

As I sit here watching a trio of my B-Spec drivers do their best to dig out of seventh place, 2 laps down - this despite being in a superior race car - in a 24 hour race at Le Mans, I ask myself, "Why I am still bothering with this game"? And make no mistake about it, this is a game, not a sim. This is my first console driving game, as my prior experience has been with PC sims such as Papyrus' original NASCAR Racing (in DOS!), Grand Prix Legends, and ISI's rFactor. I approached Gran Turismo 5 with an open mind and a hope that the consoles might finally have matured to the point that it would be an enjoyable title in which to log many virtual miles. To say my experience has been mixed would be an understatement.

What can I said that hasn't already been repeated a thousand times? The premium cars are beautiful, most of the tracks are lovely, and the driving model is above average, for a console. Unfortunately, that's all offset by tragically done standard cars, horrendous AI, and ridiculously bad design decisions (seriously, these menus are awful).

Most grating, in my experience, are not necessarily those pieces included in the title, but rather the things which are as yet still missing. Basic features like replay controls and car **** for ALL cars. Honestly, it's 2010, racing sims have had replay controls since the 1990s. Supposedly, the next 150MB+ patch will finally provide this functionality, but too little, too late on that front, in my opinion.

My other massive gripe is with the lack of a save/fast forward function in endurance races, particularly those lasting longer than 4 hours. This seems to be an intentional, and inarguably idiotic omission. B-spec drivers must race for 4, 9, and even 24 complete hours, in which they will inevitably use an absolutely mindless strategy so as to maximize their chances of failure, unless of course you give them a car so vastly superior to their competition that they cannot help but win, i.e. the Red Bull X2010 at Le Mans. Worse, you, the human driver, cannot hand the car off to AI teammates, so the lack of a save feature means you will literally have to drive 24 complete hours yourself. When nature calls, or exhaustion overcomes you, your only choice is to pause the game, returning at some later time to continue on. In the meantime, your PS3 idles, uselessly consuming power and burning through its finite service life. Absolutely, astonishingly, ridiculously stupid design decisions! It is baffling that such a choice was made and speaks to the poor leadership exhibited by the "legendary" Kazunori Yamauchi.

If this game is evidence of Mr. Yamauchi's supposed genius, I would ask that the IQ test be readministered. In my opinion, the games lead designer is the person most responsible for the games numerous failings. From the monotony of grinding through levels to unlock cars, to the completely incompetent AI, and the laugable menu layouts, it would seem Mr. Yamauchi's 5-year pet project is truly a mess. I can only imagine what a catastrophe Gran Turismo 6 will be. Fortunately, we won't have to worry about that until 2015 or beyond. All told, I was highly disappointed in this title. After 5 years in development, 5 YEARS, and all the hype coming from PS3 fanboys, I was expecting something special. What I got was an half-cooked "could have been", rather than the masterpiece so many led me to believe it would be.

Not accepting that Forza 3 did some great thing and bringing them to Gran Turismo.

Let me expand upon #3 a bit. GT5 is superior to Forza 3 BUT Forza 3 does do some things better such as:
    1. Car customization, the ability to add decals and do custom paint jobs to make each car your own.
    2. Online marketplace to buy and sell custom painted/tuned cars.

Bottom line, if you want a realistic car game and have about 10GB free on your PS3 hard drive, buy this game. Just know that it isn't perfect and any buddies that have Forza 3 are going to let you know that.

The game eases players in with a very gradual difficulty curve. As drivers become more experienced, it removes driving aids and adds in more realistic driving physics INCLUDING real collision damage. Yes, the game DOES have collision damage, its just not enabled when you first start the game, because the damage done to your car actually effects how it drives (ie. if you bend your hood, the game takes into account added drag caused by the increased wind resistance). Players claiming this game is unrealistic in it's driving physics have either never played it, or didn't play for more than an hour before rendering their verdict.

Honestly, this game is absolutely the most compelling driving game I've ever played. I've gained a new appreciation for motorsports and cars in general simply by playing it. I would recommend this game to all except the most resolute in their dislike of cars.

It's quite logical, the bigger the project that you set out to make, the more flaws are bound to happen. Speaking of that, I think Kaz and his PD team has done more than enough to create a brilliantly fun game to play with lots of fun content. The game is divided into A-spec and B-spec mode, Licence tests and special events. The licence tests and special events are challenging and very fun to play while the A-spec is more dependent on you on how you play it. You can always buy a very fast car and just do them all easily, though you need to have quite specific types of cars for different races, or you can create a challenge for yourself by trying to finish the race with an underpowered car or something. The physics in the game are not the best that I've seen, but are very enjoyable. For the sim freaks, nothing beats rFactor, lfs or iRacing experience, so maybe it's not for the most demanding sim racers. The premium vs standard cars... well the difference is definitely there and is apparent. Although some standard cars are much better made than the other. It is a flaw, but it doesn't hinder or break the game play (which is brilliant), so it's not much of a bother to me. The AI can sometimes be frustrating, bumping you and causing you to spin out. I honestly don't see lots of improvement over GT4, though it has been improved a little. Overall I think it's the best racing game you can currently get you hands on. I recommend it to all racers no matter the skill level. Expand

Also, why are there continuing commercials boasting realistic damage physics when there are absolutely none in the game? Just like the last 4, the fastest way to get around a track is to drive as recklessly as you can. There is some cosmetic damage, but it does not affect your car's performance and is barely noticeable, and disappears after a race is over. The AI is poor, like many racing games your opponents seem to follow a set path around the track, ramming anything in their way. There are a number of dealerships that are missing in GT5, including Cadillac, Porsche, Buick, Hyundai, and MG. The only way to get cars made by these manufacturers is to luck out and find one in the used car shop. I had much higher hopes for the fifth installment in this classic Playstation series.

    The Good:
    -Realistic driving
-Massive variety of cars and tracks
-Licenses are no longer required for later races (good for new GT players who want to race supercars)
-Not as steep of a learning curve as previous GT games
-Jeff Gordon looks like a muppet

    The Bad:
    -Ambient detail is hideous
    -No realistic damage
    -Missing dealerships
    -Bad AI
-Only select cars get the boasted new 'interior' view, drastically cutting down on immersion if you don't drive one of these cars

Gran Turismo 5's initial opening may seem a bit confusing and long winded to some but it is a hidden metaphor for how much effort is put into the game, its an interesting, different, original if a tad uninspiring most people would have preferred and intro similar to GT3 or GT4 but I guess you can't please everyone. The install process is a very lengthy process for what feels like little improvement in-game loading and installing, the menu systems for controls, audio, gameplay and such do feel a little cumbersome to wade through but once on the GT mode the menus aren't too bad to live with. The big change in this game that has shocked people is the fact that they have to play very differently from how they did in the previous games, you now have to use cars you would never usually drive in a million years which is a bit ingenious for giving the gamer a chance to appreciate all the vehicles that polyphony have taken the time to make. with this in mind you will be using these cars in particular events certain levels beginner, amateur etc, again this is something that people don't like. In terms of winning cars you now only win them once which is a smart idea in that people will now have to work for the money to buy the cars rather than do one race that will give them a fair bit of cash and a car that can be sold for silly money so there is no shortcut to getting certain high performance/racecars this is designed to give a feel of achievement for the fact that you know that you worked hard to get that cash. The same can be said of the leveling up process this is a smart way to stop someone from getting a super fast car and using it to obliterate the AI, also a lot of people claim the AI is terrible but to be honest I don't think it has they do now race with a bit more aggression and will at times cut you up to take the racing line as well as infuriating you on the daytona circuit in particular taking a turn at 230+mph only for the AI to give the slightest of nudges and send you spinning completely out is enough to make the most saintly of people turn the air blue! Another smart idea was making the B spec separate from A spec which means people will have to be to prepared to put in the time if they want to win money without having to really race themselves and the fact that the drivers will get to a point in their prime where they will start to lose their ability means people really do have to work to stay on top with the other drivers they've created once the slots for them become available. This time the second hand cars have a far greater say when it comes to purchasing cars if your after a racecar like the Toyota GT One or Sauber C8 you now need to be looking more than ever in the second hand for these cars whereas in previous games you'd only go into the second hand for the first car you'd own and the limited black edition racercars that featured in GT4 at particular times. the premium car **** are a smart touch and the implement of car damage is interesting to see although it doesn't feel as if there is any real effect unlike NFS Shift where damage would result in the car veering off course or worse, as for the tracks themselves some nice new editions as well remastered old tracks that do feel different in terms of speeds through different turns. Polyphony have really done a number on the Nurburg ring as well its more narrow, uneven where it counts a far greater deal than in the last installment of GT. Its also interesting to see how big a difference it makes when a wheel or 2 come of the track and onto surface that is not tarmac, the wheels can lose grip causing you to find it very tough to maintain control of th car which makes for more challenging times as well as if you accelerate too much on a turn its smart to see that you now have to wrestle to keep control of the car in previous GT's this never felt to be the case. The customisation has been made a lot simpler and smoother than in previous games as well, no more going to the specific dealer for parts and also th racing modifications makes a welcome return granted it is a bit limited in terms of what cars can go through this process but its good to see all the same.To conclude this now we'll simply say this, if your someone expecting GT5 to be just like the previous GT's then your in for a very big shock the idea of the game is change and if your not prepared to put in the time and effort than you won't fully appreciate this or find the game worthwhile but for those who do they will find a truly enjoyable and engrossing experience which is more than capable of rivalling other great games for your time Expand

The down parts are extensive loading times, lack of features that all previous GT had (for example 1000 meter test, Apricot Hill circuit, change rims in all cars and so on), not many manufactures to buy new car, plus that they left many models only in used cars... and for some reason it feels like they rushed it out, maybe is cause they did rushed it out and that is why already we got 2 updates.

For sure GT5 (as every GT) will be the benchmark for every racing game till GT6.
To sum it up, as a simulator is an 11/10, as a GT sequel is a 6/10, as a current console generation game is a 9/10.
But as a GT fan from PSX and by being sure that Yamauchi via updates will complete he's work, I'll give a 10.

The main criticisms with GT5 are the things that made it special in the first place, its huge car list and amazing graphics (the latter seemingly ported over directly from the PS2) the game spends too long trying to squeeze fun from driving decrepit old cars in slow silly races around tracks that have no place in the modern console gaming world, pop up is everywhere and some tracks look like they have been on the shelf for a good ten years, the vast majority of cars are direct PS2 ports and look terrible. handling is suspect and considering it is meant to be "the real driving simulator" some thing seems to be wrong.
I own every GT game made and have even resorted to the competition in the long wilderness waiting years for GT5, sorry but Forza 3 beat GT5 to the goal and has actually beat it, GT6 is in the works according to Kazunori Yamauchi but on these results maybe he shouldn't bother.
Loading times are a joke, cars crashing sound like someone playing football with a Tupperware box, graphics are average at best, handling is worse than in GT4 and it took 4 years to get this out?! what were you guys doing?

    A. Considering every past GT title has had some form of actual customisation it feels very hollow that you can't even change the the wheels on the majority of the cars (all of the "standard" model cars which is over 800 if you wanted a rough idea), adding one of three spoilers that can be added to just about any car in the game doesn't fix this problem, if anything it serves to remind you of how much time Polphony Digital has wasted.

    B. When you add the titles "Top Gear" and "WRC" to your game it gives the impression that they are going to be fun, or at least interesting, how wrong you would be to think such a thing. I swear if I get disqualified one more time for passing a long the bevelled corner of a car or for going half a meter off the track because I was cut off by the incredibly stupid AI (we will discuss that later) PB will open its door one day to the smell of burning manure. The kart racing component of the game starts off fun (and can still be salvaged in multi player), but quickly turns sour once you realise that it suffers from an immense case of catch up car for the AI.

    C. I know that in actual sports racing lots of laps makes the race more competitive due to the physical strength of the drivers being tested, but when a lot of the longer races are performed on tracks that lack any sort of advanced cornering the game becomes incredibly mind numbing. There is one race on the Autumn track where you have to do 10 laps and I was forced to pause every 2 minutes and go grab a drink or watch the TV because I got just that bored (no word of a lie).

    D. You would think that with 13 years of experience in the development of racing simulation that PB would understand that in real life people don't try to re arrange the side of your car if you miss judged the corner, however this isn't the case the AI will do all sorts of silly things like breaking on a straight when there are no obstacles in sight (not even other cars) or over steering five times in a row instead of merely stopping and correcting themselves. While on the topic of AI I think I might take a moment to discuss the "B-spec" part of the game, which entails you directing an AI "driver" in a race, my main problem with this game mode is the players AI always seems to be a pansy and will do things like not over taking or just straight up accelerating into the rear of the car ahead for 3 seconds before breaking hard (this problem becomes so crippling that in some races if you can't get a head in the first few corners that you will spend the entire race losing positions due to your driver refusing play aggressively, it got to the point where my Veyron came 7th in a race on the second tier starting tournament, without crashing once).

    E. I really want to point out the games atrocious sound track, but it supports custom music so its not like you can really say that its a deal breaker.

The reality is that the game isn't terrible at first glance, but I can't help but feel that the six years of work since the last game doesn't seem to have been well invested especially considering the leaps and bounds the last games took when it comes to development. I fear that the most notable feature of GT5 is its online multi player, but even then it is hard to like a game where its saving grace is a mode that is rampant in most titles this generation. If any one is wandering the only reason I haven't brought up the graphics it is because they are like the games simulation mechanics, in the right light it is beautiful but more often than not you are looking at card board cut out observers and terrible texture mapping.

People didn't even know this game came out and it is by far one of their premiere games, and one of the few left. pretty soon people won't want to wait for these types of games especially when Microsoft is securing them for the 360, including the DLC like map packs for shooters to get them first, and games like GT 5 won't be worth it with Forza looking as good as it did in its third installment. but as for this game a definite buy. Some things are really polished and good while others are so crappy you will think Yamauchi lives in a bin. Some people don't notice flaws as much as others do. If you are one of those you will enjoy it.

So lets start with the good. First of all, the driving model is really nice.Premium cars do have the right feeling. I have not tried everything but I hear even head tracking should work (they have to fix it for non-arcade first though). The feeling is especially good on the wheel and it is a bit harder to play using the pad. But still, its possible. I found it quite a distinct experience, driving carts, toyota yaris, pontiac GTO spasming like so mad animal and fiat 500 being really crappy like it was in reality. The hardest part must be braking, that seems real to me. The feeling of a heavy car from 60ties rolling down the road at 250 km/h is frightening. Sadly there are no g-forces but we can hardly blame the makers for that.
Secondly, there is a lot to do. Licenses, races, special events (karts, rally, nascar and much more). I haven't even unlocked em all yet! After that you still have years to collect all the cars you want. And premium cars ARE really nice. I hear the damage is after lvl 20(40) so I cannot comment on that yet. Don't heed people saying "no damage" but they played the game for 5 minutes. I also liked the music, I don't get it how people dont??

On the other hand, a few things in the re game nagged at me. For example as most of you noticed, really dumb dumb ai. The game drives fine, but when you slide a tad and the first enemy rams you and pushes you for 1km down the road? That is definitely frustrating. Also, while premium cars are really beautiful the other 800 are just there. Nothing special. Probably have 20 variants of toyota yaris, like '01 '03 ... you get the gist of it. And not pretty at all. While the graphics are nice most of the time there is glaring ugliness with non-premium cars compared to premium. Also jaggies and wooden people could use some love. Now as last, the thing I find as most annoying are the menus! God horrid. I hate slow and cumbersome menus, I hate the medals and cups. Just let mi drive again after I failed to reach silver please, don't make me watch stupid animations every time I restart to get a better timing. I am losing hours of life here on pointless animation and fade-in-outs. Probably I am the only one who is bothered by this but I swear, this rakes the most.

In conclusion I can say GT5 is a safe buy if you already own ps3. If you don't and you are fan of GT franchise or if you love to drive and collect cars and don't care about some craziness. If you already own xbox you probably won't buy ps3 for GT5 and all is well. I would also recommend a steering wheel if you can afford it and have space for it. G25 if you can still get it is the best bargain, got mine for 150â

There is just none that are like it. Some say Forza but it is more of a casual racer than Gran turismo 5. By that I mean Gran turismo 5 doesn't have a rewind button so if you mess up then it is back to the start. This lack of a feature is what makes Gran turismo 5 so good. You have to really work at perfecting your racing lines and shaving off a second or two from your lap time is really gratifying. So as I was saying there really is no other game like it. You get to race carts, rally, nascar and formula 1. Replayability This brings me to my next point replayability. Gran turismo 5 has tonnes of it. Though I have not completed the game yet I have put in a good 200 hours since release and am just 57% done. That does not mean this is a 400 hour game which would be impressive. It starts to take longer and longer to increase your percentage done and I figure when all is said and done this will have been 1000 hours to complete. That doesn't include the time spent online which will add probably a couple hundred more. Stuff that sucks There are some things that aren't so great about Gran turismo 5. For one the shadows are really jaggy. It would have been better had they not included shadows since they are somewhat distracting. But at the same time the reflections on the car are unbelievable. I have not seen anything like it in a racer ever. Some of the models of the cars also look crappy. These are almost always the standard cars, the premium ones are all top notch. The unfortunate thing is that there are only 200 premium vehicles while there are 800 standard cars. B-spec Some of the cars in Gran turismo 5 are very expensive in the millions of dollars range. The races up until level 18 in the expert series of events only give you about 40 000 credits for winning. That kind of sucks if you want a 10 million dollar car. Fortunately there is the B-spec mode. It allows you to command a race team. The nice thing about this is you don't have to do anything except start the race. You buy a fast car soup it up and then let you AI character rake in the money for you. You can go do homework, pleasure your old lady or do house work all while your team is making you money. I haven't got them to the extreme levels yet but right now I get 20 000 credits every 15 minutes and that may not sound like much but when you are doing something else it's all good. Liscences The polyphony digital team has brought the liscence tests back for part 5. This is great because other games don't really teach you how to race you just have to figure it out on your own but then maybe you don't learn something because you're stupid. Well Gran turismo 5 takes all that away (unless you want to not do the tests) and shows you how to be a pro driver. There are even special events where you get to practice the skills you have been taught. What makes this the best Gran Turismo? You're probably asking yourself and maybe have been since my intro well I am going to tell you. The main most noticable thing is obviously the graphics. This is easily the best looking Gran turismo but that is because all the other one were on inferior consoles (i.e. the PS2 and the original playstation). Another thing mostly due to the same reason as above is that the load times are much faster than previous iterations. Another thing is that the online is much better with jumping in to races and also there is less cheating like in Gran turismo Prologue. Finally this is the best gran turismo because it becomes an addiction in ways previouosly unimaginable. Maybe it's because I don't live at home and have to go to bed when my mom says to but I play Gran turismo 5 all night long and have some sleep deprivation going on. I am in some kind of polyphasic sleeping cycles where I fall asleep while by b-spec teams race and then wake up 15 minutes later to start the next race. In summary this is the best game of the year and if you are wanting the most bang for your buck this is it. The single player is at least 1000 hours and the multiplayer is however long you want it to be. Expand

I have a PS3 and an XBox 360, I've owned every single Forza and all Gran Turismo's from 3 until now. Well, where to start with this game. I wanted so badly for this game to be a new gold standard, but alas it has fallen short. Six years of development time meant that nothing short of perfection would be enough for a good score, and GT5 falls significantly short of simply "good". Turn 10 has been very confrontational with their fan-base, and I was convinced that the only way for them to turn it around was for GT5 to be astounding. However, after playing it for a week, I can state that this is not the case. The game lacks the polish so often associated with Polyphony Digital. The whole standard vs. premium car thing really sets me back and comes of as tremendously half-assed. The graphics of some of the standard cars are laughable, PS1 era graphics, and the textures belong in Duke Nukem 3D. The Anti-Aliasing is terrible with the shadows and smoke, leaving your car looking like a stair-case every time you venture off course or do a rally. The shadows run at about 5 frames per second, just take a look at the shadow's movement during a replay, you'll be very saddened. The menu system is so convoluted, I have to resort to internet boards to figure out how to a fix the correct tires for a race. And to top it all off, the driving physics feel like they took the GT4 engine where every car felt like a Front Wheel Drive Civic, and made it have uncontrollable, snap, oversteer. The physics do not feel like real life, and I challenge anyone who believes me wrong to take an M3 out on a road-course and see what I mean.

However, it does do a number of things very well. The photography section is amazing, although I'm a little put off by the fact that I have to unlock certain photo locals by doing impossible challenges. I love taking photos in the game, but there are places I'm not good enough to ever unlock. Disappointing, to say the least.

The Premium cars are astonishing, although like the Standard cars, not all Premiums are alike. Some look like slightly dressed up Standards, while others look like real life. However, who's idea was it to have a Premium Prius and a standard M3 CSL? There are some cars that are cool, and some that are not. PD seems to be confused by this.

Overall, it's a decent, playable game, and I hope it improves significantly with updates. But for me, it will be a simple play until I've beaten it, then it will go back on my shelf, next to NFS: Shift and Grid. Not a terrible amount of replay value for me. Back to Forza 3 I'm sure.

I think my friend summed it up the best when he said "Gran Turismo is beautiful to look at, then you try driving and it's like driving a Buick through butter-cream."

Example: You are cornering, opponent putt's his car in front of you, you hit it slightly. ... Disqualified! Example: You get of the track?... you can't ... there is a invisible wall.... crap

It's a nice game, not great .. far from brilliant.

Good/great sim. Average/good game. And to all the critics who are saying that they expected 'MORE"after 6 years: take your biased expectations and shove em'!! Evaluate the effin' game for what it IS instead of what you were HOPING it would be.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. GT5 is the art of automobile made video game. It has some errors and fails in the conception (menus, shadows with jaggies,a few standard cars) but all the other things are just in another level next to the next generation of consoles.
    And it's a really funny game. 9.5

EDIT: For all of my wordiness and blabbering I forgot to actually give the game my rating. Apologies for the double post.

I'll be straightforward by saying that I've owned an Xbox since 2007 and have both Forza games for that system while I only recently bought the PS3 for the purpose of playing GT5. My honest opinion is that GT5 is a solid racing game with plenty of cars to choose

I'll be straightforward by saying that I've owned an Xbox since 2007 and have both Forza games for that system while I only recently bought the PS3 for the purpose of playing GT5. My honest opinion is that GT5 is a solid racing game with plenty of cars to choose from. As a fan of muscle cars I was delighted to see the '64 pontiac GTO, Dodge Superbee, and of course the '69 Camaro SS as well as several great late model cars. While I could list my issues with the game I think it all boils down the the fact that GT5, with it's long development and budget, did not in my opinion put out a superior product. There are things it does better than Forza 3 and vice versa. However, I think I can say that any fan of racing games that does not own a PS3 can get an equally satisfying experience from Forza 3. In the same regard, if I owned a PS3 but not an Xbox I would definitely say that there was no need to buy an Xbox to go racing since GT5 will satisfy. Bottom line: GT5 is a great game but it hasn't set itself apart as the superior racer. As far as I'm concerned, GT5 and Forza 3 are on equal playing fields.

Briefly speaking, this is hardly a game and it should not be scored as such. It may not be a simulator like say rFactor but I don't think the design was directed with total simulation in mind. All the points regarding GT5 you may read online are true to an extent but all in all they are to be taken with a grain of salt as well. Gran Turismo 5 is not a game, it is not a sim. It is a software for a motoring enthusiast. Here you will drive the cars you may never be able to afford on track you may never be able to drive on. You will drive in places that don't exist and you will experience motorvehicles you may have not even considered interesting. If you love driving you will love GT5, if you're after a racing game this may not be for you. GT5 is like PS3 itself, it is a lifestyle not necesarily a pure gaming experience. The only reason this doesn't get a 10 from me is the bizzare decision of not securing the premium quality for Bugatti Veyron (not going to rehash all the finer points of this debate, it's on the internet already). If this is ever remedied in DLC/Patch, I will gladly increase my score.

It has to be played with a steering wheel peripheral to appreciate it, so grab that DFGT, it's cheap enough, and immerse yourself for years to come.

An unusually complex driving game that demands real dedication and only fully reveals its true power once you've put the mileage in. [Jan 2011, p.108]

GT5 is pretty much exactly what everybody expected it to be. Overhyped maybe because of the unprecedented delay in its release, but spot on with its goals.
