I would give this game a 10/10 If Hope was not a pathetic whiny little **** boy and Vanille actually contributed to the story and plot other the being one of the several crystal girlfriends that one time. Otherwise Underrated Final Fantasy Game.

Incredibly boring corridor guided jrpg with action elements. By far the worst and least engaging FF, took a lot of steps back compared to even the now almost 30 years old entries for the sake of simplifying the gameplay. Another example of publisher trading creativity and innovation for marketing driven goals.

while the game is admittedly somewhat rinse and repeat gameplay wise (lacking variety, no towns or NPCs) this game is a psychedelic fantasy sci fi with bold style, loveable characters, and great combat. every landscape in this game is incredibly beautiful, and the soundtrack is one of the best OSTs ive ever heard.

Final Fantasy XIII was made by practically the same team who brought us Final Fantasy X, which is arguably the best in the legendary franchise. Lead developers from this team also worked on titles beloved by many, such as FF VI, FF VII, Chrono Trigger and FF XII which too was coldly received on release but regained some praise with time. With this knowledge, every gamer who doubts in FF XIII just needs to think: how could these veterans fall so low with this sequel? And they didn't.
Final Fantasy XIII holds great in nearly all aspects except one that appears in game’s discussions most often — big linearity and lack of towns and NPCs. But FF X was very linear game too. The hint is that it hides this in more delicate and clever way, and there are much more NPCs interactions for sure, so FF XIII defintely lacks in this regard. However, this game has many of its own highlights.
First of these are, of course, fantastic visuals and overall aesthetics. Technology, art and music of this game are superb. The Crystal Tools engine was capable to show in 2009 such beautiful and detailed locations, characters, scenes and effects that FF XIII still looks great. And every element and effect, even in game menus, purely from artistic side is carefully crafted and placed. But what I appreciate even more in Final Fantasy XIII it's music. Soundtrack composed by Masashi Hamauzu who also greatly contributed to music of FF X is simply magical. It's four hours of rich, sophisticated and unbelieavably gorgeous music that evokes full scale of various feelings and emotions. One of the best soundtracks ever. This music shows that Hamauzu is worthy to stand on its own in one league with legendary Nobuo Uematsu.
Another strong side of FF XIII is highly underrated battle system that combines qualities of classic turn-based ATB and fast-paced action to some degree. It feels just like classic FF game but with added dynamic and even more involving of strategic thinking than before. It doesn't show in early part of the game, but with your progress battles will become more difficult and variative. There are many fans who try to put down FF XIII for option of "Auto-Battle". They claim that game could be finished with using of only this command, but that's pure and shameful lie. It's useless to rely on this option because of two things. Main one is that basis of combat in FF XIII holds on paradigm system. Paradigms are unique take of FF XIII on classic job system from previous games of the series. To put it simply, you can, or even more correctly, you need to thoughtfully change roles of the warrior, mage, healer or other support class during battle for success. Paradigms cannot be formed and changed automatically. There are many paradigm patterns for the party that will be more or less effective in various situations, and this factor adds a lot more of strategic value in battle system of FF XIII in comparison with most games of the series. Other thing that makes "Auto-Battle" more like useful option for casuals and novice gamers than anything else is rating system's addition. Your efficiency in combat will be rated in 5-star range after each battle, and following rewards depend from it. Of course, only manual control in combat will give you the most effective results. Gils and items are very valuable in FF XIII because of advanced craft system of eqipment. Crafting was rarely included in series before. Only FF IX and X added such systems, and, as I think, FF XIII offers the best example of crafting mechanic in the series for now, at least in its single-player library.
And last but not least of highlights is surely story and form of its narrative. Lead scenario writer of FF XIII is Daisuke Watanabe who also was co-author of story of FF X and main writer of FF XII after game director Yasumi Matsuno left project's leading. FF XII was stuck in development for years and it affected the execution of game's storyline but, at the same time, it was beautifully written and contained some interesting ideas. FF XIII shares similar traits and adds above. It's not the best story in the series but most ambitious and detailed. There are more than 7 hours of beautifully staged cutscenes and the most complex arcs of main characters. FF XIII concentrates on story of every protagonist in a manner similar to FF VI but manages it even better. The world of FF XIII is also very complex, and, just like in FF XII, it has its own text codex in form of "datalog". It contains all lore info and also serves as some kind of libretto to main events for those who could skip some valuable details of storyline.
I would give FF XIII solid 9/10 but for balance the game just needs 10/10 (: .

The gameplay features a "Paradigms" system in which you basically change job class mid combat to effectively deal with the enemy front of you. The gameplay is much more fast pace as you'll be mostly switching Paradigms instead of selecting attacks as there is an auto select pick which does it for you, while it may seems to dumb done the game, it doesn't. Your main focus in combat is to switch between Paradigms to change between the pattern of the enemy and disassemble them. The OST is quite amazing as you'll be acquitted with an amazing set of musical soundtrack mostly being the main component of a piano. Overall the game is great that has a few and perhaps jarring flaws but not as jarring as you might think, the combat is fun and fast paces while still needing you to think and the OST which is the strongest part of the game in my opinion.

Schade.

I sank 53 hours into this game, finished it, went back and grinded abit more for the role trophies and that is it.

The game consists of tubes that you can run through, up to chapter 11, then it opens up abit, and I mean abit. The game has almost no free-roam-do-whatever-the-hell-you-want aspect in it. It's just running, killing enemies, watching cutscene and repeat. The cutscenes are beautiful tho, the story is kinda classic "final fantasy'ish" story, nothing to say about that. Characters are likeable (Except Hope, I dont like the brat lol)

The main reason I gave this game a 6 is cause I'm a loyal die hard FF player, so abit biased here. In reality though, I would have hard time recommending this to a person who doesen't know much about FF. I would most definitely not recommend playing this as anyones first FF game. With that being said - I still had fun and am not regretting playing it. It will be a one-time gig though. Not gonna replay this game.

I would like to point out that the sequels to this game were really good and solved a lot of this games issues. I'm sad that a lot of people didn't give them a shot because of how they felt about this one. I would for them to release a remaster trilogy on newer consoles. Expand

It makes it hard to latch onto any of the characters, so you're just stuck with people you don't like on an adventure you won't enjoy. Gameplay? Well, the game id the very definition of the word "linear." Most progression is locked behind the story, so it is literally impossible to understand the mechanics fully until near the end of the game. Like, the last 5% of the game so I hope you're patient. And the game world appears interesting but you only experience it in long corridors, making it impossible to connect to it as a location. Bizarre choices like this make FF13 a charmless experience, save for a few quality aspects like the soundtrack. None but the most curious need apply. Expand

The Final Fantasy Games have been demolished into a playable, horrible, boring, movie. We used to have interesting Characters with unique and sometimes distant personalities. In some cases, you could even recruit optional characters such as Yuffie from the FFVII edition! And Cloud's actions could land him on a date with various characters which was humorous and made for interesting gameplay. Final Fantasy, you simply ended after the 9th edition! I'm not spending another buck on you! Expand

This game, while not absolutely perfect, is an example of a really good and flawed Final Fantasy experience.

The combat system is absolutely perfect, and anyone who has ever said you can just click "auto-battle" and the game plays itself hasn't faced Barthandelus, or any actual boss in the game. Yes, there is an auto-battle option, but you can even change it in the options, if you want to mash more buttons (as you'd have to click like 4-5 times to have them actually do anything). However, the battles are difficult! Even for very seasoned RPG players, you need to know how to use the different abilities and roles so you can beat normal story bosses, and even mob fights can be a challenge! It's easy to learn (despite how long it takes for it to open up) but it's extremely hard to properly master. Previous FF games faced the problem where there's one or two post-game bosses that are actually difficult, while in XIII you need to plan proper strategies to take down some story bosses.

The story is linear. It's about as linear as X, where there's one time when you can decide what to do in the Calm Lands, either continue the story or do a little side quest here and there. XIII's story actually prohibits you from exploring too much, as you're on the run, until you land on Pulse and you can actually roam around and actually get lost, possibly! Many people complain the story is jibberish throughout, but if you actually pay attention to cut scenes you'll get it. If not, you have the datalogs to read if you want extra lore or more explanations, which seems like a good layout to me.

The OST is also marvellous. It sounds RICH and lush, the battle theme is iconic. The only issue audio wise was probably having the English voice actors rely on the Japanese interpretations, which made it feel like a weird anime thing. However, some people like weird anime things. And that's fine too.

A big flaw for the game is how long it takes to actually let you have some fun, that's granted. But it's not worth the many 0s, 1s and 2s around here. Many people I assume have only played the few hours and quit, and I can't blame them. It's a long long game, and most of the fun content is from the halfway point until the end. I get it cus I have started and stopped playing many more times than I can even remember, just quitting and putting on a more fun RPG instead every time. However, if you're patient, you've got a great game here.

The boredom of tunnelrunning cannot be overstated, there are few more interesting level designs towards the end of the game, but just like with the opening of the side quest system 80 % in the game, it's too little too late. And the new fighting system is kind of innovative but has crucial failures; bad AI and broken tank-class concept make for rather annoying battles. You cannot do much in the battles even though you know by entering specific commands you'd win all battles, the paradigm shift takes too long and battles seem too slow. Music, graphics etc. are great as expected, it really fails in the fun of gameplay section. Expand

Absolutely fantastic. By far my favorite entry in the franchise to date. Great characters with memorable designs, the peak of the signature ATB system, intuitive combat system, gorgeous graphics that still hold up, incredible soundtrack that I could listen to for hours, and a wonderful story that left me wanting for more. Highly recommended.

I decided, after returning to FF12 and completing it, to give FF13 a try. I gave it a good long try, 29 hours, and I finally realized what this game is: a multi-million dollar auto-battler. Hallway fights. Cool upgrades/leveling, but extremely grindy to get anywhere decent (especially with the items, holy crap). Story, unimportant and boring. I want to like this game, but I found myself, eyes glazing over, thinking "no one cares" while story dialog happened. I will not finish it. It is just so boring and the story is just monotonous exposition and data logs.

. Side quests are repetitive and you can't take more than one at time; which make you mindless run through the map just to pick a side quest.
. In the machine that you save the game, you also buy stuffs and upgrade your gear. But you CAN'T switch between shop and upgrade inside the menu; you have to leave the machine and enter again if you wanna change to upgrade from shop or backwards. That sucks a lot.

Good game of the genre JRPG. It's true that it's not the best in the saga, but it will keep you entertained for a good few hours. Perhaps its biggest problem compared to previous releases is that it's true that its development is quite linear. But it's enjoyable and as always in the saga very nice graphically.

It's a bold game because it completely ignored gaming trends and presented something unique. In terms of battle it was not about simple grinding and leveling but about thinking, planing ahead and acting fast. But at the same time it was an evolution of previous battle systems as well. In terms of story it broke from the classic protagonist versus antagonist duel theme into a drama that was centered around the team itself and the in-between the members friction. It is a pretty linear game since for one it is heavily action influenced but mainly because it was designed as a huge story driven ride, more than any FF before. While controversial, it played the factor of story delivery to the best possible degree.

FF XIII is a game that has been heavily criticized for all the things it was not. I rather focused on all the things it was.

It features one of the greatest protagonists in any FF game. An environment that is not only based on graphics but unmatched aesthetics as well. The scenario is probably the most complicated and hard to follow, compared to any other FF game to date. Holding its own rather well into 2012.

Majestic sites, some very hard and rewarding battles, fast paced action, dazzling pre-rendered CGI movie in blu ray quality and an epic story to unveil.

So the bad reviews is just westerners complaining that the JRPG is a different type of RPG. Also, the FF fanbase is very split and conflicted. If Square does one thing then half are going to be pleased and half not pleased. Honestly, I think you can't ever please more than 60% of the fanbase at one time anymore because we all want different things. Now on to the review.......Final Fantasy XIII is another great addition to the franchise. The story is a compelling tale and the characters play well off of eachother. The only short coming is Vanille's high pitched voice, but thats the voice coach's fault for wanting it that way. The characters are well developed and you see the main protagonist mature through the course of the game. The combat is fantastic, very flashy and fun, as well as fast-paced. It offers a refreshing change up for the series. The music is good also, but not quite up to what Nobuo Uematsu has offered for previous installments. That doesn't stop the soundtrack from being good, though. There are also over 60 sidequests to indulge in when you get the chance which offer plenty of post-story play. Final Fantasy XIII's more streamlined nature pays off in this epic tale of heroism. Expand

The graphics are still impressive and the soundtrack is also good but I miss the Final Fantasy and Winning theme. The main story is a different thing. The plot holes are impressive. It looks like the story was rewritten a lot by different people because former parts of the story, lore and facts were ignored or were a later addition / afterthought. Because of this some character development and decisions are strange up to idiotic. I will point out that I like the characters and their struggles. Especially Lightning, Hope, Serah and Sazh. Also the themes or reasons of their struggles are praiseworthy and could be a highlight. My first main critique is that there are no side activities in the game and the world opens up only after 20-25 hours. There is the statement that the game gets good after 20 hours. I disagree (it got a bit better). There is no exploration. At most each branch from the main path is at max 3-5 minutes long without battles. There is no side activity except more battles / monster hunting. You have even a Chocobo theme park with no races or anything else. The older games had much more. My other main critique is the battle system. While I found it interesting it is also unrewarding. Many said that it feels like you get an automated system and with a few tweaks you can avoid manual input at all. While this is wrong or lets say hyperbolism the point itself is valid. I must also mention the level up system. This game blocks you from leveling up until you reach certain points. I find this to be a friction pad. Also for some bosses you must defeat them in a certain way or you get instant death. This is not like in previous games were you enjoyed puzzling this out (Yunalesca from FF10 for example). More in the way: Oh you are winning this battle and we cant prevent you, lets just add an instant death timer. I like challenges but not in a way that the boss is no treat or even a challenge. Maybe I sound to negative. I enjoyed the game but it got boring after a while. I am not sure if I could finish it when it would be 5 hours longer. Overall it is a misstep but not a terrible game. They were too long in the development phase without actually developing the game. Expand

While the repetitive combat through linear hallways is easily tiresome, if you are invested in the characters all the way to the endgame, the combat nuances that open up are rewarding enough to provide an enjoyable experience with graphics ahead of its time.

I don't know what crazy thought went through my head after new year's eve, but I decided to try this game again after 10 years it came out - or close to 10 years - and only today I managed to finally finish it and get over it and I'm glad to say It doesn't disappoint in disappointing.

It's not a surprise if this game was THE game that made Square Enix become the laughing stock they are in current year and for good reasons: plot is non-sensical, has glaring plot-holes that eventually keep stacking up, there's barely any explanation for anything, characters are unlikable, combat is a chore, game is so linear it makes Call of duty look open world in comparison, and many MANY more issues.

Let's start with the plot: Lightning and the gang are humans who turn into l'cie, which are essentially tools for beings called fal'Cie, and are given a focus to complete. If they manage to complete said focus they will be turning into crystal but if they lose they'll be turned into crystal zombies. What's the focus? We don't know because the writers didn't know how to make it any more idiotic and instead actually telling us "we have to figure it out ourselves" they relied on images and dreams because "deep".
The main cast is also abhorrent to say the least: Lightning is a totally unlikable B, Hope is your whiny teen boy who cries for half the game, Vanille is your generic japanese school girl if she was australian and a dressed like a native american, Snow is an idiot and Fang is a man but turned into a woman at the last minute but without changing her dialogue or even how she behaves. Sazh is probably the only good character but because Square wanted to make him a comedy relief they tried to make him that, resulting in a mishmash of ideas.
In addition a lot of plot details aren't explained ingame, which is a role given to the datalog...yeah, if you don't know what a l'cie is check the datalog. What's the PSICOM? check the datalog. Don't you love having to do homework for following a plot? I don't!

There's more I could say about the plot but bottom line it's borderline boring and insipid: there's no flow, there's no pacing, characters keep repeating the same thing all the time and the deus ex machina at the end is so **** it would make anyone lose credibility this plot had any potential. I played bad stories before but this one isn't even that bad, it's just boring and uninspired.

But let's step into the main part of a game, the gameplay, and oh my Lord this game is terrible: for starters the game is extremely linear and for at least 20-30 hours you will have long hallways of fights to do in order to complete the game, which aren't funny nor are exciting. Secondly, when the game opens up you are required to grind a lot of in order to be "acceptable" later in the game, as enemies in Pulse hit like trucks. And third the combat is so unfun, so repetitive that at the end fo the game I couldn't bother fight anymore and went straight to the end boss.

Infact let's put the focus - HAHAHA - on the combat: the combat is turn based and you'll be controlling one character per time, and if the leader dies it's game over. That's a good start isn't it?
Secondly, the game is based around "classes" such as dps tank, healer and buffer and shifting paradigms to change formation each time required to kill the enemies. However there's one major fact in the game which is the "stagger" system", which after a certain amount of damage your enemy will be staggered, turn orange, and for a short time will take X more amount of damage shown in the stagger bar, and after the bar ends you fill it again.

That's the entire combat for the rest of the game: you quite literally do this over, and over, and OVER again, for 50-60 hours, non-stop. Bosses cannot be killed normally - I mean last boss has 6 million hp! - so you NEED stagger to kill any enemy with more than regular hp, which is all of them, and this makes combat not only redundant but also not fun or exciting. There's no variety, no real tactics or anything: all you do is stagger and kill. Close to death? Heal, buff, then stagger again, until they die.
Of course unless the enemy will suddenly decide to insta-kill your leader and make your entire 10-15 minute boss fight go to waste...which is so nice and totally didn't make me wanna rage quit one single bit!

So, bottom line, do I recommend this? ABSOLUTELY NOT. Stay away as far as possible from this abomination!. There is a reason Square Enix - not Square SOFT - has been going downhill for a while and this game is the proof of all that: it has no "focus", it has no passion, it has no love, it has no sense, it literally has nothing going for it. It's simply a shallow game with a famous brand name on top of it which meant it sold a lot, even had 2 sequels, but no quality into it.

I just wished I finished it 10 years ago so I would return it but alas, this game will stain my collection forever and ever...

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is not a troll review. This is me explaining why I hate this game.
The game is linear, that's not a surprise. Linearity is not a bad thing, in and of itself. The problem is the tedium that comes with FFXIII's linearity. The main thing you do in this game is walk forward, fight, walk forward, fight, watch cutscene, walk forward, fight, walk forward, watch cutscene, walk forward, fight, walk forward, watch cutscene, fight, walk forward, and on and on. It gets tiresome. Even after the game "opens up", 25 hours into the game, the gameplay loop is still the same. Just replace "walk forward" with "walk around".
The battle system is laughably bad. Square tries to make combat strategic with the paradigm system, but with the autobattle function and the Diversity paradigm, you can make it through 95% of the enemy encounters in the game with no trouble. The fact that combat boils down to "press x" multiple times doesn't help FFXIII's tedium issue.
The story is a mess. The game expects you to read paragraph upon paragraph of lore found in the pause menu instead of properly telling the story in game. Character motivations change on the spot, and the characters themselves are either annoying or forgettable.
There is one exception, Sazh Katzroy. He's is without a doubt the best thing about FFXIII. He's charming, his motivations are clear and never change, he's the only character in the game that acts like a real person, and he's just a relatable, sympathetic character. I also have to give the writers credit for holding off on revealing that Sazh has a family until after the player can get to know him as a character. Other stories would just shove a character's family into the player's face and expect the player to get automatically invested in the character, but they showed restraint, and that's commendable. Sazh might just be in my Top 5 favorite Final Fantasy characters ever, he's that good. Aside from the good visuals and great music, Sazh is the lone bright spot of the game.
If you genuinely like this game, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with liking this game or any game that most (or half) of the people don't like. Understand that there is a reason why FFXIII gets a mixed reception. Like Far Cry 2 and The Legend of Zelda Skyward Sword, FFXIII decided to try to experiment with its mechanics. Unlike Far Cry 2 and Skyward Sword, in my opinion, FFXIII did not succeed in doing so.

The game have some impressive visual effects and graphics, outstading CGs like any other FF game, but at the same time have a combat that becomes repetitive after some dozens of hours, and not the best plot in the series. They could get more from the FFXII combat. exploring is not that rewarding like were in FFXII. but is cool to observe the visually enjoyable well detailed scenery.

Story went needlessly convoluted halfway thru and this time the linear progression is more damning since we keep on changing perspectives over and over with the characters leaving no impression in me since we just go from pt a to pt b then change characters.

Battle system was refreshing and challenging which is one of the positives i get from this game.

Making a bad entry into the final fantasy series is understandable since we can't get all hits but not only doubling down but TRIPLING down on this mess of a title really breaks the momentum of the series. Relegating it from the top of the echelon of great series.

everything in this crappy game is badly done: the script is stupid (what drives lightning and hope is dumb), the gameplay sucks (it's only corridor with silly fight, and the battle system is a shame), the music is poor , the designs are ugly... a shame for square.

The game starts to open up eventually, but only towards the very end of the game and the sound track is not too bad.

Conclusion: 1 point for effort, 1 points for graphics and 1 point for good soundtrack.

The second worst FF game I have ever played only eclipsed by ffx-2, stay far away from this game, this game suffers from the linear story, the awful characters, the below average voice acting, and the terrible terrible battle system, stay far away from this **** sandwich, trust me you don't want it.

I don't care what anyone says about this game, this game has an amazing story, characters and such a deep lore that most people get lost into and just say the game is full of plot holes all these reasons and much more is why this isn't just my favourite Final Fantasy but also my favourite game of all time

One of my favorite Final Fantasy games easily. The game is so unique and diverse I often lost track and fell in love with the cast as they are likable and I could relate to the main protagonist lightning on an emotional level. This game really hit home with me and helped me through a hard time. I give this game a 10 because of the amazing journey unlike no other that is delivered to me.

    Yes it's good.
But if you do not have the patience to play RPG in turn, DO NOT PLAY THAT GAME.
He is slow, with a very realistic gameplay, but he has a problem, which in another point of view, can be considered ART.
    Its complexity.
It is very complex, with paradigms, crystarium, among others.
But it is still another game of the consecrated Final Fantasy franchise

The game gets perfect score for art and music.
However, the story makes no sense until chapter 9. Level design is also horrible.
Combat is intense and satisfying towards the end, but this game don't have many memorable boss fights to complement that.

I'm a HUGE Final Fantasy fan! I love this new combat style and the cutscenes are amazing just what you expect from a Final Fantasy game but that's about it for the good part of this game.
The characters are weak, none of them you can relate to as they're very unrealistic. Story is very confusing unless you play it multiple time but not many people have time to play a Final Fantasy game

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Final Fantasy XIII is a fun experience when your characters are under-levelled. I say this because grinding on this game makes it ridiculously passive and boring, the auto-battle feature is good when you're just trying to get through the game to see the story, but i don't believe that the story is worth it, the majority of the characters are awful and the conflict between them is often meaningless. The story itself is well thought out up until a certain part, but like most of the Final Fantasy games, they begin to turn into confusing, hard to follow nightmares. The characters are labelled as terrorists because of their mark from a Gran Pulse fal'Cie, they become l'Cie and must fulfil their purpose based on glimmers, they gather from their glimmers that they have been assigned the same task all the while being hunted by PSICOM, in spite of this, the characters decide to split up based on their interpretations of the purpose they are to carry out. After a short while, two of the characters end up being captured, the rest of the party are to rescue them, when their plan fails, the captured characters escape from their holding cell, the full party meets up to confront the game's main antagonist who turns out to be a fal'Cie. I'm not going to go through any further than that but i already know you're thinking what the f-. However, this does not mean that Final Fantasy XIII is a bad game, the strength of Final Fantasy games is generally in the music and this game lives up to the musical expectations everyone had for it. The combat in this game is very interesting and fantastic but was not utilised as well as it could have been, the paradigm system (basically a job system) and the staggering mechanic were excellent, but underutilised in my opinion and at a certain point in the game, all characters have access to all paradigms, essentially sacrificing the individuality of each of the characters, who in the beginning were clearly assigned a certain role (e.g. Lightning - Ravager, Snow - Sentinel, etc.), of course these characters were stronger at their assigned roles and had perks based on them but this made the game less enjoyable as a tactical game (deciding which characters to use in a boss fight, etc.).
Overall, the game had great potential and was clearly well thought out, however, nearing the end, it was clear that this game was definitely not what it had players expecting, i enjoyed this game when i played it under-levelled and i noticed that the only major challenges i had with it were the end game activities, however these were repetitive and attempting to achieve the platinum trophy would be an impossible task for me because of how boring it becomes end-game. Because of the points I've listed and my personal experience with the game, i have decided to give Final Fantasy XIII a 6/10.

The worst FF ever. That for real. They almost blew up one of the biggest saga in the industry. This game just have nice grafics on the caracters and nothing more. Storyline is unexistant, an extremtly easy game, is not open world just move the caracter forward. A complete joke for the fans...

As an RPG, it is an excellent experience that provides a beautifully crafted world and engaging battle system. However, as a Final Fantasy game, it falls short of expectations somewhat.

Ten hours in you might have doubts, but stay with it and you'll be smitten right through to the frankly unbelievable end. [Apr 2010, p.104]
  3. An unexpected Final Fantasy. The 13th chapter has a great story and some of the most incisive characters of the whole series, and even the battle system works very well, being deep and complex (even if you control only a single character). But on the other side the overwhelming linearity of the plot, the absence of cities to explore, and the small amount of side quest will disappoint fans' expectations.
