"Dead Space" is a survival horror classic. It's "Bioshock" meets "Resident Evil 4". The use of sound effects, lighting and darkness helps creates major suspense. Waves of deadly xenomorphs will suddenly appear out of shadows or through walls or floors. Graphically, the game is superb. This is a game in need of an HD port. I'd rate it with a 9 out of 10.

After hearing about both The Callisto Protocol and the Dead Space Remake get announced, I decided to dust off my PS3 and I bought all of the Dead Space games I could just so I could see what the big deal of this franchise was. The first thing I will say is that I'm shocked on how good this game looks graphically even nowadays, sure it's not shockingly beautiful like most AAA games are nowadays, but the game's art style and level design do more than enough justice in my opinion and I can't give Visceral Games enough praise for accomplishing that on a PS3. Another thing I'm shocked at is how there's legitimately ZERO UI on screen, like no joke, the fact that these developers smartly placed your main character's HP and Stasis module on his back to allow for no UI on screen while also giving the whole "watch each other's backs" a whole new meaning pretty much something to bow down to the developers for. Plus when you're scrolling around the menus, the fact that you can see Isaac's head move according to the direction is one small yet huge way to make this game more alive than it already is. The characters are pretty good with all of them being different and unique, the level design is great with it blending wonderfully with the combat. Speaking of the combat, the combat in this game is so remarkable I'm shocked that the same developers made some of worst combat I've had to deal with in The Callisto Protocol, one small thing I love is how you can still move while you're aiming allowing combat to age better than most horror classics and to prevent it from feeling unfair, basically your weapons are iconic because your main character Isaac Clarke is not a super solider, he's just an every day engineer in a tight suit with no fire-arms and just his mining tools, speaking of those, these tools are iconic because they're generally not the first thing you think of when you're preparing to defend yourself but using them as weapons does make sense like the ripper blades, flamethrower, contact beam, stasis to freeze your enemies temporarily, and probably my favorite weapon: the plasma cutter. The enemies in this game are also iconic since their design is terrifying plus the developers came up with a genius idea to aim for the enemies limbs to cut them off because shooting them in the head just makes them angrier so shooting their limbs off will kill them causing the combat to be more stressful and unique compared to other horror classics. The story and lore for this game is simply brilliant since it showcases what could potentially happen in humanity's future if Earth ran out of resources and the reason it all works is because everything that goes on here makes sense and sounds exactly like something humans would do if they were desperate to survive. But easily without a doubt the best thing about this game is what it tried to excel at: horror; so the main thing to understand on what makes it scary is that it prioritized something that's pretty much the last thing developers usually go to: sound. Because of this, it isn't excessive on jump-scares like The Callisto Protocol is, instead it has a few ones and when they happen, they take you by surprise because the game was never building them up and you're initially scared and confused what's going on and that's ensures you're always on your toes to prepare yourself for another jump-scare that won't happen for a while, sometimes when you're working on something, you'll hear "Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star" softly in your head to make you feel like you're going mad alongside the main character, and the atmosphere is easily the best in the franchise with how dark it is and it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Now while this game is remarkable, this game definitely has some flaws. Like I understand the developers wanted to make Isaac silent is so you can see him as an avatar and you're supposed to be in his shoes allowing you to form your own memories on what Isaac's thinking but this in turn causes him to seem braver than he actually is when scary stuff happens yet he never says anything causing the whole thing to feel stupid, the cannon mini-game is hard for all the wrong reasons since it doesn't move quickly enough to destroy them all, the frame-rate is alright but can fluctuate especially on my PS3, and the zero gravity sections involving you to do a Superman jump to one place to get to another is pretty janky and stiff, and some specific story beats didn't make sense when I thought about them some more. Overall, this game is still remarkable and a brilliant survival horror classic even if I don't think it's the best one in the franchise and if you're planning on picking up this game, firstly: DON'T. The remake is astonishing enough to the point where there's legitimately no reason to pick this up, but if your nostalgia is just that craving for it, it's still decent enough. Expand

A NORMAL JOURNEY INTO THE SPACE

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
The game has been played on Xbox 360 and completed in every mode it offers, eventually achieving platinum trophy.

    QUARANTINE PROTOCOL ACTIVATED:
The game starts by introducing, thanks to a cutscene, the game world setting. Immediately the player finds himself on the giant planet cracker USG Ishimura, a large spaceship used to dig into unknown planets' ground. Apparently no life forms are visible on the ship; this leads shortly thereafter to the player's discovery of the game's main encounter, the Necromorphs, deformed and repulsive creatures that would appear to be generated from the corpses of the former inhabitants of this ship. From there on, the adventure will be divided between uncovering the mystery of these absurd entities and managing to escape this spaceship safely.

    DISMEMBERING NECROMORPHS:
The gameplay of the first Dead Space is that of a true Horror action, and I place the word horror first intentionally, since the focus of the game is on the horror part, as opposed to the third chapter of the trilogy; the gloomy atmosphere of the environment, the noises and cries produced by the Necromorphs rumbling through the hollowness of the spaceship, the rivers of blood flowing through the floors and those horrific scenes of death that Isaac will unfortunately have to endure in the adventure make the definition of the game genre clear. Right from the start, the player is launched in a chasing sequence, running from these monstrosities and then trying to find a way to succeed in counter attacking them, using various weapons unlockable as the game progresses through collectible schemes. The variety of weapons is quite decent for a game of this genre, and gives a lot of freedom to different styles of play. The game difficulty is neither too exaggerated to make it too horror, nor too easy to make it pure action. There are some environmental puzzles present, but they are quite simple and intuitive enough to become a feature of the game; there are also some rather interesting zero-gravity sections for a 2008 game.

    HOME IS FAR:
Graphically Dead Space is a gem of the horror genre. This setting in space turns out to be one of the most beautiful seen so far, as well as one of the most inspired. The use of lights and shadows, Necromorphs passing through walls, dislodging cables and walls, and the proper use of color gradations make the game extremely immersive and scary. Let us be clear, this is not a horror game dedicated to jumpscare as it relies heavily on atmosphere, as already pointed out. The aesthetics of the various enemies and corpses also make it more gore and not very reassuring. Finally, there are a lot of death animations present; almost anything in the game that can kill you will delight the player with customized and very distinctive death scenes at times.

    HEARING NOISES:
Dead Space excels here as well, using sound to add the excitement that the visual side cannot; the fear of approaching footsteps or behind a door, the frightening noises heard in the background, and even the frightening silence of the void give an essential addition to the final composition. The very accuracy of the resonant audio in space is also excellent. Little gem is the use of a very apt song in the game intro and trailer.

    Achievements:
The achievements point turns out to be rather simple in this chapter of the trilogy, complete the game on normal difficulty, then do it in hardcore (with saves fortunately) and only with the gun. At least personally I found it extremely fun as an achievement. If this is frustrating for you, avoid thinking of getting the platinum trophy for the two sequels, because those will turn out to be hell on earth.

    BUT WHY 8?

    PROS:
The game boasts numerous merits that defined a branch of the horror genre and in some ways are unmatched to this day; the sublime aesthetics combined with excellent level and audio design creates a near perfect symbiosis. The game is also really long for the genre and provides many diverse hours of gameplay.

    CONS:
A couple of cons of the game are certainly the absence of special modes besides mere difficulty differences, something added later in the sequels, rightly so. Also, the clunkiness of the game's movements could be a small problem, which, however, is justifiable being the first title. Finally, the extreme difficulty in upgrading the various weapons, several playthroughs being required to complete them, leads to fatigue for those who want to upgrade them all.

Gameplay is so weird at first, but after a while you get used to it. I liked the creative HUD Health bar and the "stasis". However, what was not so well resolved was the "hunting" of items from the inventory. For example, such an attempt to pull the first aid kit in the middle of a fight was adrenaline in itself.

The range of weapons is not very varied, but it doesn't matter. I actively used only three weapons until the end of the game. The weapon upgrading system is well designed. The game motivates the player to deserve a lot of new weapon upgrades.

However, the variety of enemies is larger and some of them are really annoying.
Boss fights are interesting, but not very complicated. Honestly, the final boss quite disappointed me, but it was acceptable for the 2008 game.

As for the thing, it was intense and exciting, full of betrayal, love, adrenaline and, above all, fear.

    I give a rating of 8/10.

The psychological elements they play with along with the gruesome body horror is harrowing at times. It will forever stand in my mind as one of the best games I've ever played (I even got a marker tattoo on my wrist).

Story is a spaceship onboard catastrophe, with whole lot of intriguing mysteries revealed gradually by not excessive audio and text logs. Atmosphere is spooky, built around disturbing noises, darkness and abruptness. Monsters are walking bowels-beasties, appearing often out of nowhere. Survival is realized via classic formula: enemies are rare but dangerous and hard to kill, ammo is scarce. This formula automatically leads to necessity of resource scavenging mechanic, which is present and done well. Weapons are rather unconventional, coming from the fact that they have two distinct firing modes. Upgrades are present. To top it off, Dead Space feature ‘magic’: gravity manipulation and ability to freeze objects in time (including enemies). Pretty fun. Speaking of fun: the focal point of Dead Space is disembowelment. Literary every organic mass can be chopped into multiple pieces. It is not a just a visual treat but also a combat mechanic - monsters receive substantial damage by shooting off their limbs. The other fun mechanic of Dead Space is vacuum zones, where you will be allowed to traverse any flat surface (yes, even ‘ceilings’). The journey of silent tough engineer Isaac Clarke through infested ship is extremely linear but it never gets boring thanks to mesmerizing, thrilling plot that progresses with every step of the way. Graphics are catchy for good old 2008, reminiscent of all beauty we enjoyed in games at that time.

Unfortunately, judging from 2019, the game is too clichéd for me. If Dead Space was released today it would be labeled as completely unoriginal and generic. At the same time it can be called classic. Decide for yourself what is what. For me it is

Dead Space is an incredibly fun and gory game, the story is pretty decent as well. I had a lot of fun playing this game but it doesn't have much replay value. The gun play is very satisfying and gory, the upgrade system is also pretty good. Dead Space is a ton fun, definitely recommend it!

Bosses were also cool and their types varied a lot, in a very good way. Nowadays there are very few games which get you the feeling - cannot stop, no matter what. This was one of those. Never had a PS Platinum trophy so fast, in eight days. Horror games are not for everyone but I´m sure glad to like them. Expand

Dead Space. I heard speaking and reading about it a lot of times, back in last years of the 2000s, with many praises but only recently I could play it and finish it.

Dead Space's plot is projected in a future that we already seen other times: spaceships, moving goods aboard and extraction of planetary minerals. The protagonist of this story is Isaac Clarke, not a soldier or a scientist, but a technician-engineer engaged in his routine mission inevitably fated to go rack and ruin. In Dead Space it's nice to take the role of an engineer: refuelling Ishimura's engines? Sure. Reactivating the gravitational centrifuge so that the ship won't crash on a piece of rock? Let's do it. I mean: this is science fiction, and the game succeeds in being interesting. Fascinating, even if disturbing, the creed of Unitology religion: rebirth and immortality through death, in which death is just the only one way ticket. And speaking of this, it's ironic the grimace to congregations like Scientology and new religious movements. The plot of Dead Space was written by comic book writers and sci-fi authors, as far as I know, but what I know for sure is that this is clear and that the events are very gripping. You want to go to the bottom of the story and see its end.

Dead Space's gameplay is something that, although clearly based on very strict and old laws of gameplay, still managed to bring something slightly different in what was the situation of new survival horror games of the 2000s. The game is basically, in its core, a Resident Evil set in the future, on a spaceship and with zombie-like enemies. A real survival horror as Shinji Mikami did it over 20 years ago: there are different enemies, there are weapons to fight them, there is an inventory to bring ammunition and first aid kits of different capacities and there is even a safe, a universal container, in which to insert what is not needed or which can be useful later. Resident Evil? Yes. But Dead Space is also different. In addition to being able to enhance weapons and armor of the protagonist, to better resist the attacks of various "necromorphs", Dead Space centers its gameplay on precision shots aimed at the limbs – sometimes very visible, others less – of the enemies that in this way they can be shot down more quickly, requiring a minimum of effort and ability and not just aiming and firing. Splatter and amputation system and effects are indeed very efficient and effective. Third-person shooting with view to shoulder height (as in Resident Evil 4, but less woody) is well integrated. Usually I do not like games that are forced to belittle or hide the HUD to be more cinematographical – almost as if they were ashamed of being video games – but in Dead Space it's good: information about health is in fact reported directly on the armor of the player character, while ammunition are displayed holographically on the used weapon; indeed the HUD is there but it's very futuristic and integrated. Even visualization of the inventory, map or collected documents is shown entirely through holographic live-action system projected in front of the character. In Dead Space, the action never stops. Map is very clear and well structured, easy to consult; the use of "Navigation System", a bright track that indicates exactly the way to the goal, maybe it's a bit forced and in fact tends to help the player too much. Enemies can be slowed down by using the "Stasis" module, while using the "Kinesis" module allows physical manipulation of objects, both for combat and for solving logistical situations, and is very nice. Funny, though a bit confusing, are sections of the game set at zero gravity and in the cosmic void or in the absence of oxygen. Dead Space succeeds in creating tension and fear of the unknown, and not just jump scares.

Graphically the game has aged very well, to be almost 10 years old. Excellent effects of lighting, shadows, polygonal models, settings and animations with a well integrated physics system. Stability of frame rate is also excellent; from a technical point of view, to be released in the early years of the 7th generation, it is among the better optimized games for the capricious PS3's architecture, unlike many of its contemporaries. Nice soundtrack but even better sound and ambient effects.

Dead Space? It seems like yesterday when it came out, and it's already old. It is a good example of how a great formula, with very precise rules, can be achieved to create a masterpiece. A survival horror which makes us understand how a game doesn't need a first-person view and an unarmed character who runs around like a chicken with a video camera in his hand, to be able to scare the player and create tension. A real survival horror game Dead Space is. But unfortunately most modern "survival horror" games took an another road, in which a madman raping a beheaded corpse is more important than having a real survival horror gameplay. Well, that's not Dead Space.

Gameplay, As I said before It's like Resident Evil but in space. your an engineer sent to a mining ship that lost connection, you and a team are there to investigate. From the start you run into trouble then get attacked by monsters called Necromorphs. they attack you like Zombies but they can actually run and crawl. to take them out this game takes the head shot idea out of the game and introduces the dismember idea where you shoot the legs and/or arms to kill. the normal enemies just take more to kill if you hit the head or body while other enemies, like the fat mother one, if you shoot the body it dies letting out the little ones inside out to attack.

Overall, It's really not that bad and well worth at least 1 play through. I told my friend to play it, he wasn't interested in it but when I told him that I'd let him borrow my copy to give it a try he thoroughly enjoyed it and bought his own copy.
You can always buy it at gamestop used and if you don't like it then return it and get your money back.

Dead Space does give fright, but I feel it is more of an action game with frightening enemies and atmosphere, rather than a horror games in itself. In the end, many of the most meaningful moments relates to the gore dismemberments in battles and so on.

Despite its flaws, Dead Space is truly worth playing at least once. I have not played any of the other Dead Space main games, but I certainly enjoyed this one quite much.

Sometimes a game comes out that just blows everyone away. Dead Space is one of these games. Coming out of nowhere in 2008, this game brought a new and fresh survival-horror experience to the table.

Dead Space obviously takes place in space, one of the best settings for survival horror, on a derelict mining ship that has been overrun by a lethal alien threat that revives human corpses into deadly and shrieking abominations. Not exactly in the job description of an engineer who has come to the ship to investigate and help repair it.

On your side, you have a deadly arsenal of equipment whose main purpose is to cut into minerals extracted from other planets, but they are equally useful to taking down the horrid abominations that now lurk the bloodied halls of the USG Ishimura. The game's major selling point is the idea of dismemberment. Body shots and headshots won't work against these foes. The only way to stop them is to take them apart, limb by bloody limb. Every encounter involves strategy, requiring precise and quick aim in order to incapacitate them. Shoot off an arm and they lose some attacking power. Take out a leg and put them onto the ground to slow them. Cut off a stinging tentacle tail to remove a deadly ranged attack. Although you have the tools to fight them, the game never lets you feel quite too capable, as the creatures are many, and they are all lethal. Wits and skill is required to survive in this place.

On top of the enemies, the environment of the Ishimura is equally terrifying. Every aspect of the environment makes you feel on edge, visually and audibly. The sound design is incredible, and you are able to hear every tiny detail of the environment. Your own heavy footsteps will be accompanied by mechanical whirring, or something much more dire: a thunking sound coming from an overhead vent. The dark, decrepit corridors of the mining ship are foreboding and chilling, and instill a sense of dread every time you round a corner, not knowing when a shambling horror will appear, or perhaps sneak up behind you.

Dead Space is one of those games that will get to you. You will feel dread and terror in every step, and it won't let up until the very end. Mystery and intrigue also awaits as you uncover a dark secret that was hidden long ago. It's scary, it's intense, it's excellent in so many ways, and it's truly a classic that stands the test of time. Though it has some bits where it can be repetitive, and sometimes you can downright feel like a simple errand boy, Dead Space will grab you and hold onto you right from the first dismembered limb to the credits screen, and it's an amazing ride that you won't forget.

Dead Space nails the atmosphere of a horror game perfectly, it adds a little bit of everything (pop-scares, flickering lights, scary music, background noise, enemies coming from nowhere, etc). Horror/atmosphere-wise it's an 9/10 imo. The gameplay is basic, but there's nothing wrong with it, aim and shoot, with limited ammo (especially if you don't scavenge). The scavenging is one of the best parts of the game imo, and it does greatly reward you. The audio logs and text logs are all mostly interesting, also. The only downside to gameplay is limited weapon variety and linear mission design (you basically spend the majority of the game trying to fix something to escape). Gameplay is 8/10. Now the story was decent, but the ending didn't do anything for me, and I actually left with more questions than answers; so the story aspect is an 8/10. To end, an satisfying survival horror experience for me, would definitely recommend. If I would to give it a score probably an 8.8..The good: horror atmosphere, good game-play, scavenging. The Bad: Linear mission design, little variety of guns. The in-between: so-so cast and decent story. Expand

It is reminiscent of the original Resident Evil games, where the player's imagination is their worst enemy. There are a variety of weapons in this game and they also include secondary firing options. There are a multitude of different enemies that attack in many ways. The element of surprise is prevalent throughout game and enemies use it to attack the player. The player must learn to pay attention to their surroundings or it may lead to Isaac's death.

    Story:
Isaac Clarke, a systems engineer, is aboard the USG Kellion in the year 2508 and is on course to land on the USG Ishimura in response to their distress call. Once aboard the Ishimura, Isaac and his group try to figure out what caused the issues on the ship. However, what they find is a hazardous alien life form that has infected and killed the crew members. They then attempt to find a way to escape the vessel at all costs. The premise of Dead Space is unique and interesting. The ship, jobs, enemies, and even the character wardrobes are fascinating. The only downfall is Isaac himself, who is a silent protagonist (Never speaking throughout the entirety of the game). His silence didn't allow for a connection to the world or his group, which led to a bland and emotionless character.

    Graphics:
Dead Space's graphics hold up surprising well with the exception of low anti-aliasing on objects. The lighting is impressive, the character design is unique, and the UI (User-Interface) enhances the futuristic feel of the game. Visceral Games should be applauded for their unique take on the UI. The only visible objects on the screen is Isaac and the environment. The health meter is on isaac's suit and the ammo counter appears above the particular gun the player is aiming. Although the graphics are fantastic, frame rate drops are noticeable throughout the duration of the game and occur most frequently during areas with multiple enemies. The dips do cause annoyances, but they resolve once the enemies are gone.

    Verdict:
Dead Space is a unique horror experience that must be played. The environment and gameplay create an atmosphere that engages the player. The graphics still hold up well and has exceptional lighting. I highly recommend Dead Space! If you are looking for a great horror experience, then pick this game up!

You start the game out on a rescue mission, and you crash on a giant ship, you quickly find out that some crazy stuff is going on, and by quickly, I mean like, 3 minutes in and you’re ready to go home.
    Dead space is absolutely terrifying.
The game is dark, takes place in this massive ship you crash landed on and this ship is crawling with creepy alien creatures.
They come out of nowhere, it’s almost impossible to tell when or when they aren’t going to come after you.
They crawl out of vents, you’ll see them and think great time for a showdown, and nothing happens, or you’ll completely miss the vents on the ceiling and one will hop down on top of you.
    You never get used them.
Maybe eventually you do... but as soon as you do, they fix that.
The terror is nonstop from beginning til end.
These encounters are so terrifying because they are spread out perfectly.
You spend more time relaxed running through dark halls than you do actually fighting.
You can fight off these creatures with guns or stomp them to death.
There are a variety of schematics you’ll find on the ship that you can take back to the store to purchase a new suit upgrade or a new weapon.
You can carry up to 4 weapons at a time, and more ammo and med packs as you level up your suit.
You can also collect power nodes to level up your weapons.
Dead Space does a great job of giving you plenty of ammo while at the same time making you feel like you hardly have any, always keeping you tense.
The downside though is that Dead Space is insanely repetitive.
It’s hard to notice for the first 4 chapters of the game because the world feels so fresh, and you can’t help but smile at the influence modern games have borrowed from dead space, but all 12 chapters is nonstop follow the line, shoot things in your way, press the button, come back, do this about 3 or 4 times, get to the train, repeat chapter after chapter after chapter.
Then they add in 0 gravity sections which can be pretty cool, but it quickly becomes boring and seems far too gimmicky as it was way over used.
1 or 2 awesome 0 gravity sections would’ve been plenty enough.
The ability to slow time and use telekinesis does make some sections a tiny bit more interesting and there are a handful of bosses in dead space, but none of them really stuck out of felt special to me.
Dead Space is a horror game classic way ahead of its time and a must play for horror fans.
I found the game insanely addictive at times, even though it tends to drag things out just a little too long.

I put off playing Dead Space for years, never truly knowing how good it would be, or how scary it would be. Now that I've finally played it, I can honestly say this is the best survival horror experience I have ever played.

You start out as CEC Engineer Isaac Clarke who has been hired alongside colleagues Kendra Daniels and Zach Hammond to investigate the sudden shut down of the planet cracker class space station, the USG Ishimura. You arrive to find the ship has been taken over by space zombies, dubbed Necromorphs, and your objective at that point is to get off the ship while multiple obstacles hinder your progress.

Immediately, the gameplay feels similar to Resident Evil. Using a gun with a laser point to hit weak spots of your enemies screams Resident Evil 4, but this game actually improves on the formula. You kill necromorphs by severing their limbs, which you do with the plasma cutter, a gun that shoots three plasma bullets in a horizontal or vertical direction and is displayed by a laser sight. Because you need to be precise, the shooting requires strategy over mindless shooting, which keeps the gameplay fun and refreshing.

What I love most about Dead Space is the absolutely perfect atmosphere throughout the game. The whole ship is creepy, with dark hallways, random sounds, creepy enemies, and plenty of well executed jump scares. What adds to this is that the only flashlight you have is attached to your guns, so the only way to see in the dark is by aiming down your gun, which ultimately narrows your field of vision. All of these elements make for a truly scary gaming experience.

One problem third person shooters always have in common is that they're not very good at aiming in close quarters, and because most of the necromorphs fight up close, the flaw needed to be remedied, and Dead Space does just that. Not only is Isaac able to move while aiming (which you can't do in Resident Evil 4 and 5), you also have the ability to punch and stomp with deadly affect, allowing you to give yourself some breathing room. Along with this, you have the stasis ability which allows you to slow your enemies for a short time. It's not perfect, and I do wish they would've added a combat roll, which there is room for, but it still works, unless you're swarmed with enemies. Then you're screwed.

One of the most impressive features is the heads up display. There are no health meters or ammo counts on the sides of the screen like most games. In Dead Space, all the essential information you need is displayed on Isaac. Ammo count is displayed at the base of your gun and the meters for your health and stasis abilities are displayed on your back. Plus the map projects in front of you whenever you pull it up. The map interface may not be the best, but it gets the job done. All of these features and clever tweaks made to the Heads up display ultimately make the game more realistic, stopping you from looking at an icon in the corner prevents the game from breaking the immersion, and not being able to pause to look at the map keeps up the tension.

Like most survival horror games, a key mechanic in Dead Space is item management. Breaking crates and killing enemies to find loot, ammo, and new items always satisfies, and what I love most is the storage system. In the game, there are shops to buy items and new outfits, but the main feature is the safe, in which you can store your items for later use, keeping your inventory open for new items. Along with the shop and safe, you also have the work bench, which allows you to use power nodes to upgrade your weapons, health, air, and your stasis and kenisis modules.

The game impresses but it's also has it's problems. There are little things, like the bad map navigation, disorienting zero gravity environments, no combat roll, and the gameplay could get repetitive if you play for too long. However, the biggest flaw in the game is the turret sections. The turret sections are terrible, with loose aiming controls, guns that overheat way to quick, and crappy laser sights. These sections would've been miles better with a simple cross hair, but instead you got bad laser sights that all too often blended into the background, making aiming more than difficult. Luckily, there are only two of these sections, but I hate them both equally.

Overall, the Dead Space may have it's hiccups, but it's not enough to take away from what is ultimately an amazing survival horror experience, and has turned me into a hardcore fan of the franchise and survival horror games in general. If you love horror games, you owe it to yourself to play this game, and even if you're not, you may still want to play it because it is simply that fun.

a fresh new and impressive entry for the survival horror genre. genuinely scary, the game makes you feel isolated and alone, something that resident evil was famous for. the necromorphs are terrifying and every encounter is a spook, even though I thought I would get use to them. little bit weak on story and characters but the experience is truly unmatched.

Not normally a fan of horror games, but this game pulled me in. The story line is a little generic, however that is well made up for in the experience. This game came with the warning of scaring you and it did, I have never jumped so much in a game in all my life. This is the crème de la crème of horror games !

There is only one error that I can find with this game and that error is that every weapon apart from your default weapon (Plasma Cutter) is useless!

I don't know why everyone is saying the PC port is terrible because I haven't had any of the problems explained! Dirty Console Peasants!

On paper, the concept seems flawless. On the TV screen, it's not. Dead Space is not a game for everyone and, unfortunately, not an adventure for me. I loved the tense moments but so many aspects of the game held me back from truly enjoying the journey as a whole. The gameplay felt extremely rigid and every movement was wrong, almost as if Clark was wearing a straightjacket inside of his space suit. In addition, the entire game felt repetitive and ultimately lost my interest about three hours through. There is very little to mix up the occasional jump scares and shoot outs, and I felt extremely tired by the halfway point, which may be a first for me. So in the end, your opinions on Dead Space are entirely based on preference. Many critics and players alike enjoyed the dark and depressing mood, as well as the sense of containment that the ship had to offer. However, I just didn't find the game to be that fun, and since that's the main purpose of a video game, I personally can't say I enjoyed the experience. If it were me, I'd find an escape pod.

One of the first things you'll notice about the story is just how bad your luck is on this mission. In true horror fashion, anything that can go wrong will. This creates a lot of interesting situations that you'll get thrown into. Granted they are all similar, basically get to a location to retrieve or activate something but the thrill comes from the atmosphere this game has and the journey to completing these objectives. The thing that makes this game great is its true horror feel. The atmosphere and tension play out like a good movie and the science fiction setting reminds me of the film Aliens, which is a good thing.
A gripe I have with the game is just the older, clunkier controls. This game was older when I played it and this shows in the game's mechanics. Melee is clunky and hard to use and aiming and movement are slow compared to modern games. I also feel that some deaths were cheap. There were instances when I would get knocked over and an enemy would kill me as I was in the standing up animation and defenceless. I know an alien in real life wouldn't wait but I want to feel like that I can still survive in a survival horror game. Speaking of horror, this game nails it by introducing varied enemies at a near perfect pace. Just when you seemed to be fighting the same things, the game goes back to something that hasn't appeared in this level yet that you forgot about, or it shows you something entirely new. The game is also good at adding in a new plot point when things start to feel stale. In the midst of the very standard objective types, it is good that the game reminds you why your doing it and adds something new to keep you interested. The weapons are also interesting and using the good upgrade feature, most weapons will stay useful until the final boss with a few power nodes invested.

I think I've covered everything now. The game has a truly great survival horror atmosphere as you play it and is paced very well with a story that starts well, slows a bit in the middle before ramping back up near the end. The game is let down by the basic and clunky feeling combat and backtracking to the same areas but for the most part I can definitely recommend it for someone who likes games with a great atmosphere like this.

Dead Space is a fantastic third person survival horror, only the second of it's kind (Resident Evil 4 is the only other one I can think of). The HUD being integrated into the game, and the inventory screen not pausing the game were really good ideas from Viscreal, and they work perfectly. The story is solid, and voice acting believable. Graphics were very good, and gory. Lots, and lots of gore. The enemies, Necromorphs, are absolutely terrifying, and are unique compared to generic zombies.

My only real complaints, are that Issac himself is quite a boring character, (There are two times you can see his face, He's just a grey haired Genericon-5000), Issac also is mute (Magically gains the ability to speak in Dead Space 2) and a lot of the chapters are performing task after task to repair the ship, usually involving puzzles so simple that a dead fish could do them.

Overall, the atmosphere is fantastic, the gameplay is fun, and technically it's solid.

Pensonally this is the most intense experience I've ever had with a game. Even just loading the game up each night made me apprehensive and no other game has given me the same fear that I could be attacked from any direction and killed at any time. At times I was so apprehensive about what was round the next corner that I was literally inching my way along the corridors and at other times it even made me scream like a little girl!
Many little touches contribute to making this scary but special mention must go to the masterful timing of the scares, the way tension is built plus the use of sound and music to create atmosphere is the best I've ever seen and it's all held together with great controls and gameplay.
If you're still undecided about buying it after all these years i'd say don't hesitate because you're sure to get it very cheap now but more then that, Dead Space is not only a great Survival Horror but one of this generations must play games period.

As a major horror buff, this masterpiece promises and delivers beyond belief. It's made me feel such an overwhelming tension and paranoia no gaming moments could compare to. Dead Space uses its flaws to its advantage. It manages to be unique even with borrowed bits and pieces from games that inspired it. The plot evolves into shocking events here and there. The dismemberment mechanic is such a new thrill it won't get old easily. The way these creatures interact with you in their goal to shred you up makes for a clever and challenging experience. A lot of backtracking is done, but in the sense of the plot, it all goes together. The environments are varied up enough to keep things running. Also, with hidden secrets to find, collectibles to get, and puzzles to solve, it really isn't such a repetition like the first game in the Assassin's Creed series. Take it for what it is, a mysterious, twisted, bloody and crazy twelve hours that will have you pausing every few levels to build up your courage again. Let's cherish the original games, because sequels are known to not capture that lighting-in-a-bottle sense. Expand

This is an incredibly scary game that fans of "Gears of War" will appreciate due to its gory action. In "Dead Space", players are cast as spaceship engineer Isaac Clarke, an "everyman" who is forced to play hero when all hell breaks loose. The game begins when Clarke's ship arrives at the location of a distress signal sent by a mining vessel named the USG Ishimura. Due to a guidance system malfunction, the rescue ship crash lands into the Ishimura dock. Shortly after, grotesque creatures composed of human body parts appear and kill the entire crew except for Isaac, his commander and a computer specialist. With their ship out of commission, Isaac is asked by his fellow shipmates to help power the abandoned Ishimura. As he gathers and repairs parts, he discovers audio tapes that explain the appearance of the "Necromorphs". "Dead Space" is a survival horror game that conveys a sense of anxiety and dread in every segment. But it's also a highly-innovative third-person shooter with a heads-up display that appears as holograms on Isaac's spacesuit and weapons. It may not be the scariest game out there, as it loses its fright factor nearing the end, but it maintains a psychological element that makes you think sometimes whats real, and how you yourself would keep composed in that environment. However when it comes to the gameplay, it offers a unique, innovative mechanic but doesn't expand on it. The gameplay ultimately becomes repetitive (though not necessarily boring) and leaves you wishing you could do more. This is what holds the game back from the podium. As scary as it is, you still want to be on that ship with things wanting to kill you, you wish that the terror could have gone on longer, and that killing creatures and putting things here and fixing that weren't the only objectives you had to do. You may argue that there may not have been that much else to do, yet you still wonder. Dead Space may be lacking in the interactive department, but it comes out as a remarkable experience that you'll be thinking about for awhile. Expand

Only complaints really would be that at times it would of been nice to have a "barrel roll" move to dodge and maneuver around groups of enemies and replay value is low outside of just achieving trophies. Still recommend it to be played and enjoyed at its simplicity and allow yourself to be taken into a scifi-horror roller coaster, Yippy Ki Aye MF! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. i found this was an alright game and in the begining i was so scared that i could only play this game for about 30 mins at a time but eventually it became repetitive and i stopped getting scared and was able to look at it like a normal gameinstead of a horror movie that i could pause whenever i want and start back up again later. i liked the endidng of the game but i am unsure if it his dead wife was actually on board with him as he escaped or if it was part of his insanity. either way i loved this game in the begining then that waned to contempt for the game and i liked how it is not that comlicated to figure every thing out sure you will die loads but you will eventually get it right. this is a must play but i am not sure if it is a must own but i liked it so ill hang onto it Expand

SO CLOSE to System Shock 2, but just one thing is off. I never felt in danger of running out of ammo at any point (except for on Hard, and while on that topic, when can we learn that Hard is not fin when you simply have to hit an enemy more times?). Survival horror is supposed to draw tension from the aspect that you are helpless and hopeless, and the true reward of the game comes from when you fall into a room of 50 monsters, you got our alive to the next area with only firing off a couple of well placed shots. Aside from this, the story and atmosphere were very compelling, and it was still a very good game. Expand

The atmosphere of this game is simply brilliant. I played it in 5.1 and the sounds... omg. But the game in itself becomes boring and frustrating after a while.

It is too repetitive, and at some points it is too difficult. For example when you are shooting the asteroids... Maybe on the PC version it's easier to play because you have more control with the mouse... All in all it is not a

Although I seem to be in a very small minority, I just don't like this game. Firstly, it's really difficult, even on the easiest difficulty level. Secondly, it's too frightening to play for any length of time. I don't like the sensation of being in a state of panic for hours on end. Thirdly, it's too long and doesn't change up the pacing or variety enough.

Its the Dino crisis of PS3 but hopefully the sequel won't be as dissapointing. Get on it. Expand

This is one of the most goriest, scariest, most awesome and epic game I've never played before. I would say it's the goriest game ever....well, same with Mortal Kombat. The story is unbelievably amazing, I didn't expect it to be that interesting. The scare parts is actually scary. When an alien or something pops right behind me, I jump off my chair screaming. The aliens are interesting looking too. However, the boss levels are a little too easy, I actually got through the final boss without dying once. The main character, Isaac Clarke is cool and interesting to play as. The similar part about this game is that it looks like Resident Evil 4, except this game is more scary and interesting. If your a fan of a Third Person Shooter Horror genre, you will enjoy this game. Expand

brilliant i LOVED this game, this is why i'm a gamer. solid clever design, great guns and monsters with enjoyable fun puzzle elements. This really was a nice surprise in an era swamped by endless cash cow FPS multi player games with 5 hour single player and multi players FULL of glitching 14 yr olds

  1. Dead Space is a beautiful videogame, showing incredible polish and detail in both the visuals and the control. The amount of love and attention packed into this title is apparent, as scares and action are perfectly blended. What an incredibly impressive way for a new survival horror franchise to debut!
  2. A spectacular game which shows vividly that "Resident Evil" is not the king of survival horrors anymore.
  3. The combat is fast and frantic, the interface excellent, the controls responsive, and it provides an overall satisfying experience. While it's fun, though, there isn't much that's memorable about Dead Space. It feels like patchwork that's been slapped together from other franchises, and it lacks a spirit of its own to make it stand out from the pack.
