A lot of spitting on symbols that are holy for Christians - with a parody of Christ on the cross included.

I had a blast with this game. I did not expect the game to be what it is. I thought going into it based on the cover it was going to be a bit indecent but the story is deeper than that.

The game is indeed unique and original, however, there's a big problem with the gameplay. You will either love it or hate it, but either way, it's just not rewarding enough and gets repetitive very soon. It's a 70/30 combination of Puzzle/Dating sim. Also, the theme of the game is very sexual, but there isn't even a frame of nudity in the game so the whole thing seems missed and silly.
I especially disliked the sounds/music while playing puzzles, it can be really obnoxious and there are no Sound options to turn it off so I had to often mute my TV. I've spent many hours on this game and Platinumed it, but in the end I think it's just too limited in its gameplay to deserve a higher score.

Good game brought down by some annoying **** The audio for a lot of the game is just obnoxious, the constant bells, and the screeching bosses that chase you. The controls are also annoying at times. The RNG blocks in the later half of the game are annoying as well. The characters are mediocre, the gameplay is ok. The story and concept are the best things about this game.

In a world where any anime-looking game is almost always about some teens saving the world or highschool life, this story is fresh and I wish the persona series made by the same company would take notes.

The gameplay is also great. It is a straightforward puzzle about climbing a blocktower by moving blocks to make a path to the top, like a reverse 3D tetris in a 3D. I'm glad they didn't opt for something more done like another bejeweled clone or some generic platformer. I laugh at all the bad scores from people who are only giving it a bad score because it was hard. It is hard, but it is an M rated game with adult themes, this isn't meant to be an easy little kid game!

The music is also stellar with both original tracks and remixes of classical music from artists like Beethoven and Chopin.

This is also a game where ever single choice you make feels like it really matters. Every one. I am sick to death of games giving the players dialog choice but they don't actually do anything.

Even if you find the block puzzles aren't your thing, you must admit it is a unique game that has real effort put into it.

It's a Golden Show is one of the best tracks for a title screen. It is beautiful. So is the the goddess who introduces us to the game Catherine from the Golden Playhouse. I would go through the hell that is the Babel levels to get her ending. She is beautiful. The mechanics are really fun. The climbing aspect and the narrative flow together incredibly well. There isn't a time where I felt the game was cheating me. Maybe with some of the boss fights, but it still had solid mechanics. The fun of not using the items the game offered was really fun and added an extra layer of challenge. They were helpful, but lowered my rank if I used them. i got Katherine ending, this is much easier in writing, and I was happy with it. I started doing the Catherine playthrough and I didn't feel like the game was having narrative errors with motivations or character progression. it felt coherent and emotional whichever path I went down. The music can't be understated because the player will hear it at all times due to the heavy cinematic scenes or the long gameplay sections. It was truly like climbing out of hell. This game does a better job of illustrating mental health than Celeste. it is such an oddity, but Atlus does good work. I am excited for the Full Body remaster/remake. It is worth every second of your time, and subsequent playthroughs keep you coming back for more and new narrative. Expand

    REVIEW
    Story:
Catherine is a thriller mystery story that discusses the issues of relationships and commitment. You play as Vincent, a man thrown into a scenario between his long relationship with his girlfriend, Katherine, and the woman of his dreams that he is cheating with, Catherine. Along with this, Vincent as well as other cheaters are having nightmares that would kill them if they die in the dream. The game totes multiple endings depending on how you profile Vincent's personality. You do not make any real decisions in the game, but you influence Vincents moral and emotional state to an extent. Vincent, the (K)Catherines, and the rest of the side characters are well voiced and the writing does engage you into the characters, their situations, and the overall philosophies of the game. It can be silly at times, but that is part of the story's charm.

    Gameplay:
There are two elements of gameplay in Catherine, tower climbing and communication zones.

The tower climbing is the center of the gameplay. This all takes place in the dream sequences of the game. The objective is to move blocks and create paths to the top of the tower. The rules vary based on the different blocks, items, and enemies you encounter. While there are a few times that the controles feel sensitive at times, Vincents movement in the game are sharp and rarely does the game feel unfair. There are s plenty of opportunities and enemy tales to help you reach the goal. This is by no means an easy game, there is plenty of challenge and you will likely die quite a few times before you catch on the logic of a specific tower. These sequences can also feature unique and fun bosses that challenge and pursue you as you attempt to escape. Overall, the gameplay for the tower climbing is an arcade game in all the right ways.

The other gameplay element took place in the communication zones. These zones was more permit you to interact with the story characters and make choices that will define Vincents personality, the people around him, and the final moments of the game. They are in essence as a hub (similar to your time on the Normandy is Mass Effect) to interact with NPCs. It's basic, but it serves well in building the story.

    Visuals and Sound:
While the animation sequences look great, the 3D models are more basic, but it does not take away from the atmosphere. The visuals, blended with fantastic music, makes the game stand out.

    Lack of a Bridge:

The games story and arcade gameplay makes Catherine a fun and thoughtful ride. However, the dream being the bridge between the story and gameplay is a stretch. Given the games deep story, the arcade gameplay of climbing a tower to reach a goal is a bit simplistic. Atlus could have added different puzzle and environmental elements to really emphasize the psychological thrill of the story.

    Conclusion:
Even though Catherine did not fully succeed in bridging the contrast between the story and gameplay, the game shows high quality in both of those elements. If you love puzzles and arcade style games, this cult classic is a game worth playing.

Insane difficulty spikes (it's hard even on easy if you're not a die-hard fan of puzzles - they even added a patch to add "very easy" difficulty later on), a lot of unexplained game mechanics (trap blocks), "techniques" that describe what I did half the game before, severe punishments based on randomness (for example, you climb the tower, the game adds more blocks to indicate that you're going in the right direction - and then at one point it stops adding blocks and shows you that you've been climbing the wrong tower all along, wasting all your time and effort - too bad, restart! should've chosen the one on the right/left instead. It even has checkpoints at those dead-end towers where you reach the top and there's no more blocks to further taunt you), absolutely dull and uninspiring story - they want to tell me the guy's acting like a baby at 32 (!) and can't talk properly without stuttering or take responsibility for anything he does.

Everyone has their favourite game, the one they can't put down. My favourite has radically changed as I have thought of it,from Fire Emblem to Xenoblade to Shin Megami Tensei IV, but I realised that all of these had flaws. They were flawed classics. Which is why Catherine takes a special place in my heart. To me, it is the only videogame which has 100% delivered on all the various things it has promised.

Catherine is all about Vincent, a bum who's tied down by his girlfriend Katherine. Katherine is pressuring Vincent to marry her but he is scared to commit. Around this time the sexy, cheerful Catherine appears to Vincent, and after a one-night stand, he finds himself having to choose between the two very different women. Choose Katherine and he's committing himself to shackles for a lifetime. Choose Catherine and he's debasing himself and abandoning true love for a life of sex and selfishness. BUT! Each night Vincent is forced to climb a deadly tower each night until he gains "True Freedom", whatever that may mean. If he falls off the tower in his dreams, he dies in real life, and there's been a string of such murders recently. The story and character development is brilliant, with everyone getting a good look-in and Vincent's resolve changing to the tune of the 8 different endings you can get, which are all satisfying and reflect the player's own opinion regarding the topic of relationships.

It's a very interesting story and setting, standing as a criticism of the traditional heterosexual hunter-gatherer relationship, and the social pressure to commit to the perhaps-unrealistic dream of a happy-ever-after world. Yet on the other hand, it is also criticises the increased liberalism of modern society that has normalised sex-first relationships and led to people perceiving romantic partners as more disposable. Catherine is predominantly about heterosexual relationships, and I don't think that's a bad thing. I think that there's potential in a sequel or spinoff depicting homosexual relationships, but there are dynamic differences that would best be depicted in their own story rather than potentially being relegated to a subplot/thrown into the main plot at the risk of causing it to lose focus. That, and anime is notorious for stereotyping gay characters (though things are improving, they weren't really there back in 2011),so it's best that writers stick with what they know.

The gameplay is very clearly split between reality and dreams. During the day, you watch the story progress as Vincent hangs out with his fellow down-out-of-luck friends at The Stray Sheep. Naturally many of its customers are men who are lost in love and don't know what to do (though there are some women thrown in). You can sit down with these NPCs and chat, and discover more about their life and their thoughts on cheating, commitment and such.

At nighttime it all changes. To climb up that tower I mentioned, Vincent must push and pull blocks to he can climb up said tower. If you've played Pullblox on 3DS, it's like that but on acid (though Catherine came out before Pullblox). The gameplay is oddly hypnotic and very difficult, but it is very rewarding and a solution is always there. The levels are impeccably designed. Hats off to the boss stages, which contain bosses that represent Vincent's inner fears of the real world. They're insanely creepy and have interesting designs. You literally get chased by a vagina at one point early on! Also, remember those NPCs? They appear in this shared dream that you have, each talking about things they are more reluctant to share when in the bar. Talk to your favourite NPCs often or they might die like the others on the news!

The sountrack is decent. I don't hate any of it really. There's a few standouts, including some nice riffs on old classical tunes.

Catherine hit me like no other game has. The reason for this is hard to explain, but when you get it is's so easy to understand. In spite of all of it's insane quirkiness and supernatural elements, Catherine manages to be an intensely relatable game which discusses the important issues of conservative and liberal approaches to love and sex. There will be no game like Catherine, a game that is so proud and bold in its depiction of sex and lust , but so thoughtful in how it does so. It's one of the few reasons i got a PS3 and for the bargain that was £1.49 on sale, I cannot be happier. No game better represents Atlus as a creative force.

Technically the game is okay there's no bug and the anime like graphics are well done but the artistic direction is minimalist and I would have preferred more detailed environments. There's also a lot of beautiful cinematics (that really looks like an anime) which is always nice, even if secondary.

Concerning the gameplay it's based on two pillars. The first (mostly in the real world) is the interaction with other characters, engaging dialogues, texting, or drinking, all that will determine your karma and affect the story, I personally love multiple ending stories, but I wished we had even more options in a game like that, because I really felt like my character was f*cking it up and I would have like the possibility to take more meaningful decisions that just the way of telling things to be perfect it could have also offer more mini games to do in the real world (like doing your job, playing pool or whatever). The second pillar is puzzles (during your nightmares) those are pretty difficult and challenging, even more if you want the gold prizes, their all work on the same mechanic : moving blocs to climb to the top of the structure; it's repetitive on the end and I would have like to encounter other kind of puzzles and not just some new kind of blocks, because at one point you'll realize that with two or three techniques you can beat almost all the game.

The story is really good, it treats themes link with romance but in a really mature way that may make you think about how you deal with relationships yourself. The game should last around 12 hours (with at least a third being cinematics) it's not long but it feels complete and you don't need more block moving to have a good time.

In conclusion Catherine offer a really interesting story but its gameplay although based on nice ideas is not deep or diversified enough to make this game a true gem, I would still advice it for anyone looking for a good story and that doesn't mind a repetitive gameplay.

This is the most unique, daring game I've played in the last 5 years--and the most satisfying. The story is amazing and more than makes up for any shortcomings in the puzzle aspect of the game. I would love to see more games like this from Atlus, dealing with adult themes.

As a casual anime fan, I really loved the look and story behind this game. I normally just skip though cutscenes and don't pay attention to the plot, but the story is (half of) what this is all about. The puzzle sections pretty much nail the balance between fun and frustrating (i.e. tough, but not off-putting). Shame about those bells ringing constantly when you've nearly completed a level!

You can play arcade games, talk to the people who come in and out of the bar, chat with the strange bartender named “Boss”, use the restroom, drink different types of drinks and even text people on your cell phone. The cut-scenes are well-done and give the game character and depth. They’re full anime and are very dramatic and entertaining, you will definitely be left wishing there was a Catherine anime show when it’s all said and done.

The pacing is very well done in Catherine. Most time is spent climbing block puzzles, but there are also other game play elements such as being able to hang out at the local bar called “The Stray Sheep” with friends. The game play itself is fantastic. The block puzzles are truly entertaining and extremely thought provoking and difficult, even on the easiest difficulty. You will learn block climbing techniques from the other sheep you encounter in the strange “world” in Vincent’s dreams. You will never grow tired of playing Catherine. Each puzzle is different, always changing from level to level. Some blocks may have spikes, some may crumble and others may be springboards to reach higher blocks. It’s a blast to play through these levels, but beware, some can be very difficult and players may become frustrated, but it’s all worth it in the end.

The music in Catherine is beautiful. A soundtrack even comes with new copies of the game. It’s all high quality instrumentals with violins, pianos and more. The music really sets the tone for each stage in the game, giving it a sense of individuality. The voice acting is all well-done, from the most insignificant characters such as bar-goers to Vincent and Catherine.

Overall, Catherine is a rousing success. It cements its name in gaming history for being a truly unique, one of a kind experience. All gamers should pick it up, regardless of genre preference. Catherine boasts a fantastic story, great pacing, top-notch voice acting, spectacular game play and solid replay value. The main downfall of the game is that it is linear and one dimensional. However, it’s still worth every penny of the $59.99 price tag. Give it a purchase, you will not be disappointed. Catherine is a diamond in a pool of substandard, mediocre shooters flooding the shelves of retail stores.

I wanted to go back and write a review on one of my favorite PS3 games -- Catherine. This is a true puzzle game, one that relies on your ability to think both critically, and (as the game progresses) more and more quickly.
The plot is fresh and well developed. You are a young programmer on the cusp of taking the "next step" with longtime girlfriend Katherine. All of a sudden, though, a young beauty interrupts your stable life. Her name? Catherine. The resulting conundrum forces the protagonist into a kind of metaphorical dream-scape, in which he must make his way to the tippy top of a series of towers, all by using blocks that he can push, turn and cilmb. As he makes his way through this trippy reality, filled with monstrous re-imaginings of life's key decisions (one boss is a gigantic, hideous baby,) he's forced to make decisions that will ultimately decide the outcome of his life. The game asks the player a series of questions, and by the game's end, you may end up with Katherine, Catherine, or, perhaps, you'll be doomed to live in this dream world forever...
As far as game-play goes, Ezra Pound (who famously said to writers "make it new,") would be proud. Lots of games come out well polished with fun gameplay, but ninety nine percent of them feel like some kind of iteration of a different game. (Madden 2016 feels like 2015, MGSV feels like MGS1V, and every FPS ever feels like Unreal Tournament.) Catherine is a completely new experience, yet somehow also feels very polished, as if it's the third or fourth sequel in a series. Giant block puzzles need to be climbed quickly, because as you ascend you'll notice the ground beneath you begins to fall into blackness. If you don't want to fall with them, you'll need to think on your feet. As you progress the blocks fall faster, the puzzles get more complicated, and "trick" blocks will make things even harder (some blocks are covered in ice which you will slide right over, others have spikes that shoot out and kill you. Some explode.) These trick blocks need to be both avoided and used to your advantage, and the game does a fantastic job of providing puzzles which test the limits of your critical thinking and your imagination. Bosses are a blast as well. They're both visually interesting and more challenging, as they will sometimes hurl things at you to knock you off the climb.
Overall this game merges a frame narrative RPG with a true puzzle experience. For smart gamers, this one should be on your shelf. .

I had little trouble beating the game on normal, though I died many times. Some of the deaths were due to the sometimes confusing camera and others were due to mistakes made during the puzzle. The puzzles are challenging but are intuitive (once you understand how the blocks can and can't connect) and by the end of the game, 2 or 3 techniques is all you need to beat the game.

Perhaps the best part of game is the story and the decision making process that the protagonist must go through. What is portrayed as the generic "good choice vs bad choice" dynamic quickly turns out to be something a little different. The questions are not the clear cut obvious right answer and obvious wrong answer. Some of the questions make you think and the game, using online data gathered from other gamers, lets you know how other people have answered the same questions. The way the questions are answered, combined with other decision making within the game, lead you to one of many endings, some of them wholesome and conclusive and others bordering on the ridiculous.

Overall, Catherine is a great game with a lot of unique elements and a great story filled with metaphors, allusions, trivia, and dilemmas.

Good for: Puzzle gamers, anime fans, fans of story driven games, fans of philosophy, fans of psychology and fans of sociology.

Not suited for: Those who like easy games.

Very unique story arc tackling a the topic of infidelity in a very clever and unique way, not to mention it is covering an array of of very mature themes and topics, which is really rare to see in these types of games.

So what's my problem with this? The game on the whole is essentially 2 games stapled together. The anime driver story part and the puzzle platformer part. While each is fantastic and well executed on their own, together it just doesn't feel quite right. The fast paced platforming sections are hampered by long story sections, and/or the story section are continually interrupted by what is essentially an overblown mini-game. Either perspective fits depending on which aspect you enjoyed more.

    Overall:
Catherine is a great game with a great premise behind it, BUT, it just doesn't feel right most of the time. It needs to decide if it wants to be a game or an anime, because as is, it doesn't work as well as it wants to. There is clear room for improvement and perhaps a bit more variation and a more seamless transition from gameplay styles is required.

Still, I liked it, but it could have been better.

So sure, it's momentarily a frustrating game, but I don't see how they could have achieved anything else with so much stuff going on constantly. I beat the game on Normal difficulty, with dozens of 'retry' collectibles left over, after doubting I would even make it through the game. So it's possible, and in the end I had a good time with the inventive challenge. I enjoyed the story (over 1 hour of cutscenes/dialogue) and appreciated how the game built upon itself, slowly expanding with new block types and increasingly surprising boss fights. An unlockable challenge mode with leaderboards seals the deal. Even after you've played the campaign, there'll be something to come back for if you enjoyed the game, apart from the multiple endings. It's also one of the rare PS3 games with local multiplayer. So it's a full package, and if you like the basic premise, you gotta admit they did a spectacular job in fleshing the gameplay-focused idea out into a comprehensive game. The uniqueness deserves a 9/10, but then again, the whole game has you climbing UP, and it's easy to come up with variations they could have included. How about a level where you climb downwards, or where the undo-button is used in some clever way, or just a rule-change in some way. The ideas included are so inventive, but they mostly deal with block properties, and not expansion of the premise. If the game had been more fundamentally varied, it might have been one of my rare 9/10s. Expand

I cannot recommend this game to anyone because you may come back to me angry for having failed to complete a challenge. The challenges are frustrating; I tried to snap my controller in half more than once. I lost countless hours of sleep trying to push myself to get through the increasingly difficult levels. I wanted to quit many times…, but could not because the story had me so hooked I had to make it through to see what would happen next.

The game is odd, in a good way, in that if feels like two games in one. One game is intense puzzle plat forming, while the other is a relaxing conversation simulator. As you play you switch between the two which makes for some brilliant pacing. Without the story and the knowledge I could relax following an intense brain exploding puzzle, I would have easily quit early in the game.

The story, while relaxing, tackles some controversial social ethics that will probably affect players in different ways. For me, the game made me look internally and reflect on what type of person I am. This in turn made me feel guilty as I knew I was guiding the character into doing the wrong things but could not bring myself to stop.

My biggest gripes are that the controls are a bit awkward which make for frustrating moments, and a few of the endings feel incomplete. These are the endings you get if you are indecisive throughout the games trials.

Catherine is a unique game, and is unlike anything I have played before. The difficult puzzles were always worth it because of the victory I felt when completing them. Sometimes I would jump off the couch with a victory yell. (My wife didn’t appreciate this). In the end, I am happy to have had the opportunity to experience the game.

The puzzles are relentlessly difficult at times, and you'll have to invest some time to get good at it. Play it enough and you're guaranteed to improve. The first problem I see witht the gaem is that is like playing two different games at the same time, just when you are enjoying the history you have to enter the nightmare which makes it somewhat tedious and makes the history feels slow at some point, and regarding the history I have a couple of issues with it, the first is that the side histories of the people aren't very interesting and in any point of the game you feel that you really want to know more about them, also the time you spend on the bar which is supposedly designed to be relaxing and reflexive doesn't feel that way at all, when you are there you have the constant feeling that you must move and do things instead of talking to people, and this also contribute to not getting interested on the side histories, the main history of the game could be more developed, it gets very interesting at first but then it starts to get wors and you feel that somethings could have been better. The atmosphere in this game isn't good either, it feels very inmature for what should be, the character in the nightmares look like Arthur from Ghost 'n' Goblins adn certain expressions and dialogues aren't appropiate for what the history should transmit.
The gameplay is very fun though, very addictive and relatively complex, probably it could have been a bit more dinamic, but is ok, my only issue with it is that stops the main history a lot.
I give it a 6 because of the gameplay, the history possibilities and for being original, I wouldn't recommend purchase it for full price, but if you see it cheap or you you can rent it go ahead.

Overall I liked it (I was alternating playing Catherine and Dark Arisen) and Catherine took me about 24 hours playing time to complete spread over about 4 weeks.

I liked the puzzle game element, pushing blocks and climbing towers of blocks. The difficulty is not so hard as to be frustrating, the variety of tower layouts is good and the graphics/adio are also good. The controls are fiddly though and many times I found myself pushing a block I wanted to climb or not being able to exit a trap block fast enough. Its annoying when the controls 'reverse' if you pause movement when traversing the reverse of a puzzle.

If you like puzzle games, you'll probably like it.

The story is novel (for video games) and well presented. BUT if you're used to modern rpg style adventures where you can go and do pretty much what you want, be aware this is an old school tyle adventure with very limited interaction options and choices and a railroaded location sequence. Still, it is what it is and is a good example of the style.

The only bit that annoyed me was the game reporting back other players answers to the end of level questions. Why? I playing a game so my answers are 'the game characters' and not mine presumably so are all the other players. It feels like a compulsory personality test with random answers being compared to everyone elses random answers. Annoyingly pointless. The Walking Dead game did the same. In Catherine, the repeat questions are randomised, so its not even as if you can go back and change your answer to match the majority.

Overall, I liked it, but I won't be playing it again anytime soon.

Story starts of with a guy called Vincet and his life and his girlfriend, whose name is Katherine, and well he meets a seductive woman in bar called Catherine and he cheates on Katherine and well you will fall into story as it goes it turn very attracting and interesting that i dont want to spoil anymore ...
gameplay is being devided to two sides, just like Persona series, one in real world as you go around and interact with other characters and one in Vincent's dream where you end up in an interesting puzzle, you have to climb up a tower which is made of different cubes, there are many traps along the way and you have to open you way by moving cubes along to top of the tower, as you get closer to the end of the game these puzzle start to become SURPRISINGLY DIFFICULT that may be frustrating.
But what satisfies the gamer most is the adult oriented story, its about relationships and so on, which other games doest pay attention to it that much other than other ATLUS games ...
graphically and artistically catherine has much to show off, beautoful colors in the world and nicely drawn and developed characters and so on.
I picked up the Collection edition at the first day, it was kind of a weird CE since it gives u a pervert feeling with having boxer, sexy pillowcase and catherine shirt in it WTF !
    but overall
    its fun

The story also evolves around how you play, so there is replay value. You wouldn't think a block puzzle game would have character development...but this one somehow pulled that off, and all the characters are not only likable, but genuinely interesting. Just about beat it at the time of writing this review...looking forward to giving it another go on the hard difficulty! A few minor complaints. the biggest being that the level music is too heavy, and the loops are too short. While it is actually really well produced video game music...it gets really repetitive. Also the controls can be a little finicky if you move to fast, and a few of the later levels are kinda half-assed, but then they pick up again. No deal breakers

but for a full game to be based on a puzzle block game it has to be a very good one . which it happens to be. the puzzle looks deceptively simple but in-fact is highly complex in its design it is also very challenging with a strong difficulty spike after the tutorial levels to progress takes practice, learning and trial and error. Soon additions like spiked blocks ,sheep that push you or block your route add even more to the difficulty and general madness of the overall game. Each completion of a set of 3 block levels allows you too the other area of the main game the story. which are interactive animations with conversations and speech choices that change some scenes and affect youre final ending. this part of the game is also very high quality the story is quite adult in its content and very amusing in places. if you have played any of the persona series you may recognise the style and use of various things like the use of tv channels to tell the story. There are 2 variations of the puzzle game, a retro version arcade cabinet in the Bar called Rapunzel, and a challenge area called Babel, which unlocks if you manage a gold rank in the main games challenges. there is an online question and answer dialogue that after you answer the question tells you what other players first time answers where. The only bad point of the game is the slightly loose control scheme in the block game as youre man sometimes goes the wrong way or grabs the wrong block but this is slight and does not spoil the game at all. Overall another great innovative title released by Atlus and made by the persona crew.

Since Finding out it had a moral choice system that typically results in one of two relationships, I decided to go for capital "C" catherine, the bad one, the "evil" option. Part of this decision was an attempt to undermine the game's attitude towards monogamy, since the "evil" option at least hints at multiple partners (Though Catherine does threaten to kill you if you cheat on her). I mean, the whole plot revolves around a character cheating and refusing - REFUSING, despite all options given to the player, to tell his current committed partner that he got drunk and cheated on her. It's not much of a choice system when the most obvious choice is one that is not there. Nonetheless, the dual-morality system is a bit more nuanced than, say, "Infamous," where the evil option means decapitating children and the good option means martyring yourself for a bus full of nuns - in other words, no real grey area. "Catherine's" morality challenged me, though not how I thought it would. I honestly couldn't tell at many points what the "right" decision was. Maybe this is because of my 5-year committed polyamorous relationship, making the code of monogamy baffling to me. Despite actively trying to be with "Catherine, Vincent was swinging back to Katherine, the "good" option. My answers confused the game. I believed in multiple partners (BAD!), but believed strongly in honesty for all involved (GOOD!). Now I could keep ranting about how out of touch this system is with queer identity, but I won't. I didn't expect much from a morality system anyway. What's interesting is how the game "Translated" my beliefs into the pathetic cheating monogamist I was supposed to be. It felt like real roleplay, as opposed to the kind of roleplay where I can kill everyone in a town one second and save the world the next. This alone made Catherine interesting. Oh yeah, the game - it's a dating sim with block pushing puzzles. The puzzles try to represent inner challenges Vincent faces based on his daily moral conundrum. It's neat, but difficult and is completely unrelated to the development of your character. You probably won't play the game for the puzzle system, You'll play it for the story. And the story is weird, but surprisingly challenging. For people like me, anyway. Expand

It is the antipathy of unconventional, loaded fully with a cast of unique and compelling characters, Catherine stuffs you in the role of Vincent, a commitment fearing slacker who finds himself forced to choose between a bodacious blonde, or his loving long term girlfriend. Similar to Atlas's other games, you can interact with the rest of the cast during the daytime, and play the core gameplay. The people you talk to and choices you make can affect the game later, an interesting mechanic that is unfortunately all too obvious. In the evening, Vincent finds himself climbing a horrific tower created from blocks, escaping his intermost fears praying to find the top. The puzzle is frantic and difficult, but only sometimes frustrating. When you do fall and die (which kills your character in real life, too), you never feel like you're being punished. Instead, you're just driven to try and try again. Solving the puzzle is always rewarding.
The story is well though out and compelling. The twists are incredibly unexpected and keep you on your toes. This is all assisted by the exceptional voice acting, that made me genuinely care about each character. My only complaint is how little control you have, though you're guaranteed so much. Your choices don't really affect Vincent until the tale end of the game, which is disappointing. Nonetheless, it's a unique and adult experience you won't be forgetting anytime soon.

Personally I hate games with alternate endings and this one has 8, its just a cheap way to give the illusion of a long game, which it was not. It was fairly short. The concept and story are ok, but once again compared to the story of persona series, its just ok. This would have been a good game maybe if it was released for the ps2 or psp, but for a huge console like the ps3, we expect a little more from the people who gave us Persona 3 and persona 4. The block puzzles dont get boring, but they also dont get fun either, it simply isnt addicting and has not much of a replay value. I can only guess the bright side of this is the ability to fight with your friends, but even that comes with some restriction, you need to achieve certain things to go online. Bottom line is, this game lacks variety, Persona was very long and had a big amount of variety. It was too underwhelming, nothing about it is grand, everything was short, story, characters, gameplay, etc. Im not saying its a bad game, but for its time, its not good enough. Expand

Two words : quirky and engaging.

First, the gameplay is both infuriating and worthwhile to those who put in effort. Catherine is not for the faint of heart. I once spent 1 hour on a single level but it was worth it when i reached the end. However, the main point of this game is not the gameplay in my opinion, but rather the interesting plot. I once spent 1 hour on a single level but it was worth it when i reached the end. However, the main point of this game is not the gameplay in my opinion, but rather the interesting plot. As you watch vincent squirm through awkward conversations, freak out over small things, and encounter other events, you can't help but find the story amusing. The game wonderfully presents the tale of vincent and keeps the player on their toes in terms of what is going on. The replay value is also wonderful because there is a whopping EIGHT alternative endings. The only downfall to this game is it's amount of content per play-through. I breezed through this game in 9 hours and I wished it was longer.

Catherine is a game that everyone should at least play, but to buy this game may be a step too far. The method used to tell this gameâ

Saying Catherine is a different unique game is a bit of an understatement. It's a puzzle game centered around gorgeous mature pseudo cut scenes with moderate interaction. The "day time" sequences involve you interacting with your cronies in a bar where you talk to your friends, the other patrons including employees and do a few other random things. I.E. get drunk, text message your "girls" and play arcade games and so forth. The "Night time" or "nightmare" sequences begin when you leave the bar for home each night. They involve a block pushing, pulling climbing sequence that has you trying to reach the top of a tower of blocks before some odd mental representation of a life crisis catches up with you. Make no mistake, the puzzle sequences are VERY challenging. I found myself setting the game to easy to make it a bit more enjoyable and I suspect many other will or have done the same. Overall Catherine is gorgeous to look at and a lot of fun to play even if it can be frustrating at times. Expand

This is a case of two completely unrelated games duct taped together. Yeah, the puzzles are supposed to be a metaphor for the main character's issues but it's like solving battles in Puzzle Quest but with a seemingly mature and serious storyline. Both parts are okay but they just don't fit together in my opinion.

Great game, awful story. I was excited to see Atlus make a game where the characters are adults hanging out at the bar having affairs as opposed to the high school themed Persona characters they usually feature. In the Persona series, you have to make real relationships with other people to level up traits that benefit your dungeon battles. In Catherine you hang out with people in oneGreat game, awful story. In the Persona series, you have to make real relationships with other people to level up traits that benefit your dungeon battles. In Catherine you hang out with people in one location, but your interaction does not impact the game in any significant way. I didn't feel like I had any control over the protagonist's decisions, and disliked the linear fashion the narrative was presented. Also, one key spoiler is fairly obvious at the beginning to many players, making the rest of the story hard to suffer through. The block climbing gameplay is where this game stands out, and is the reason this game is good. There is no way to describe how compelling it is to get to the top of the block wall without playing it yourself, and it makes all other games where you have to manipulate blocks seem elementary. The puzzles are a perfect blend of thought and action, and I'm keeping this game in my collection based on that alone. Expand

Puzzle and story elements are combined elegantly in this wonderfully quirky game. It's odd to see any puzzle game with a background and plot, but if there was ever one that has done it perfectly, it'd be Catherine.

The story follows a young 20 something into the world of friendly drinking companionship and dating. He is torn between remaining a bachelor or marrying his long time girlfriend, Katherine. During one night of debauchery, he is awakened next to his one night stand. Distraught and concerned for his future, he must make choices and relive them in his puzzle nightmares.

It's a fantastic game if you are into solving puzzles whilst answering life's oddest questions. It certainly does get deeper than moving blocks about, and the game mechanics does it quite well. There are times when you may get frustrated, but that gives the player a sense of accomplishment once the obstacles are surpassed. The main character is extremely easy to relate, and you'll feel compelled to help him. Morales and obligations are questioned, as well as a mystery in the midst of a puzzle solving. It's a FRESH feeling playing a game that doesn't place itself within a certain genre, but explores the boundaries of multiple ones, whilst injecting it with real life concerns.

A gorgeous hybrid. It's a puzzle-solving platformer and sexually-forced anime that's been combined into a well balanced title. The game is going to please the fans as well as it will whet nosy parkers appetite for actually playing it. It shows the Japanese developers know how to appeal to European and American gamers without giving away the bizarre ideas trademark.

An interactive story enriched with puzzle elements or an arcade/puzzle game with an exceptionally mature and expanded plot – depends on how you look at Catherine. Either way it's both frustrating and fascinating. [April 2012, p.80]

One of the most obscure games we've ever seen. It's not a platformer and it's not an adventure game, but it combines elements of these two genres in a spectacular way. If it wasn't for the -sometimes- extreme difficulty and some poor design, Catherine would have been a must-have.
