Bioshock 2 may not be as grand of an experience like the outstanding original but it does everything a sequel should do and it is still the best game ever in terms of narrative richness.

Lots of people, who played the first game says this game is bad. I haven't played the first one yet, so I can't compare them, but Bioshock 2 is a great game on it's own. Nice graphics, good story, just as long, as needed, and killing the splicers with your drill is one of the most satisfying things is fps history ever. Can't wait to see Boshock Infinite.

Playing this game actually made me better at BioShock 1. On the Survivor (hardest) difficulty mode in the first game I couldn't make it past finding the first plasmid (since I would just keep getting outflanked by splicers and shot in the back of the head) but now I am cruising through and I am maxed out on med kits and EVE hypos (I think because Bioshock 2 forced me to prepare more carefully in the scenarios where you have to defend little sisters while they are getting EVE from corpses). I really wish I had a webcam so I could put on Youtube the first time I defended a little sister successfully (in Bioshock 2) because I did it on the hardest dificulty level with only the wrench, rivet gun, electricity plasmid and no med kits (I just kept getting wrench headshots on splicers which I had bottlenecked in a doorway). The next time I successfully defended a little sister on the first attempt just by using the hypnotize (enrage) plasmid on all the splicers and they just all killed each other for me. Something about the gameplay in Bioshock 2 just seems to make more sense to me than it did in the first game, but it's clearly applicable to how you approach the first game. I think the thing is that Bioshock 2 is a little more obvious about how it forces you to visualize how you are going to approach encounters; maybe it just gives more obvious clues than the first game did. Or maybe Bioshock 2 just isn't as good at keeping its secrets as the first game; either way I feel like I understand (and love) both games much more now than I would have expected (and I can't believe I was actually on the fence about buying this game or Dante's Inferno last weekend!). For those who don't know, this mechanic means that now, whenever you find a Little Sister and kill the Big Daddy, you can take the sister with you to collect Adam from corpses while you get hit by waves of enemies (that smell you collecting Adam?). It's a very frustrating mechanic, and tends to ruin pacing. The rest of the gameplay is copy/paste from the original Bioshock. The story is simultaneously a sequel and a prequel. You are playing in a time after the events of Bioshock, but all the diaries you find are from a time before the events of Bioshock. These diaries feature Andrew Ryan, Frank Fontaine, and many of the other old characters. The new diaries establish a whole new issue that Ryan was apparently worried about around the time Fontaine was becoming a problem. It seems very much like it was tacked on just to be able to include Ryan in the story. In fact, the whole game just seems like it was tacked on to the old Bioshock to make money. Is it a good game? Well, Bioshock was a great game, and this copies that, so sure. Is it original? No. Is it as great as it was to visit Rapture for the first time? Of course not. But if you're having trouble finding other good games to play, this one won't disappoint you too much. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Shooting is much harder because humanoids have a hitbox to the head the size of a pin needle however once you reach end game getting headshot on the 'harder' enemies is nearly impossible not to do since they have massive big daddy heads and die in one shot. The storyline doesnt add up by the slightest it keeps saying that the events in rapture where happening all the time during Atlas's rebellion yet in Bioshock 1 there was no such thing so how does Andrew Ryan fit into any of it and how does the now have anything to do with the before. The game despite being a SEQUEL comes off as a prequel with nothing really clicking to each other to make sense. As for the multi player cool fun interesting untill it dies out because it suffers all the problems of the single player fps poor hitboxes god awful graphics and no real way to aim accurately not to mention how many people already cheated the system after the first day it came out. There were NO bosses (the Big Sisters do not count, and neither does getting bum rushed by 20 splicers), no plot twists, and what the hell happened to Tennenbaum?! She's in the story for five minutes and then gets dropped for the rest of the game?? BAD storytelling!! Even the ending was predictable. I in fact waited 3 hours with 30+ people to pick up my copy on Monday night, only to return in about an hour ago for credit towards Heavy Rain and Final Fantasy XIII. If you love shooters like Borderlands or MW2, then you'll love BioShock 2. If you loved the original, then you're in for a major letdown. It's equally good to the first Bioshock, minus the novelty aspect. Here are the changes: new hacking system (it's better), new story (it's worse). I like the story a lot more this time around. There's much more emotion and darkness put into it, although I will admit that Rapture feels more of the same. In some ways, thats a good thing, but still Bioshock 2 feels like it didn't change Rapture at all. And the fact that the graphics have not improved does not help this, at all. I will admit that there is a lot more lighting this time around and it makes the game look really nice. It's a fun multiplayer mode and it will drain a few hours out of you. It's understandable as to why the developers decided not to make you this power-filled behemoth, but i still would have liked to be one from the beginning. The gameplay itself is some-what improved from the last, they have added some new weapons, such as the drill being your first weapon, to liven things up a bit. Sadly, some of them arn't very fun at all. The hack gun, which is used to hack turrets and camera from a distance, sometimes dont work and they must be hacked in real time, meaning that in the other game you could brave being bombarded by bullets and then hack it, you have to stand there and take the rain of pain in able to hack. The visuals havn't changed, but in the case of this game that is ok, it's unique and memorable. The main thing i noticed is that the beginning of the game feels like a 'you have to do this to go on'. You are on a train in the beginning and you have two stops, each of which require you to go get something to move on. These moment, while they were technically in the last game, never felt like this. The newest edition of this is the multiplayer, which it is quite good. You are a member of a new organization in Rapture that is testing new plasmids. While the story behind it is strait forward, the concept of it is quite good. You level up to get new plasmids, cloths, and guns. The only problem with it is that it takes forever to level up. In an over all gaming experience, this game is pretty good. The problem it never got the appreciation is deserved is because it was a game squeal to one of the best games of all time. Now, it should be noted that the parent company of the first, Irrational Games, did not work on the squeal. This lack of the parent company behind the project does alarm some, but to be brunt this is a good game Expand

Honestly Bioshock 2 was a slight failure but there is nothing wrong with it at all. The graphics are almost the same but there is nothing at all wrong with that, it didn't need a revamp. The combat is impressive and fun and the new enemies feel fresh. The story is not as complex as the original but Sofia Lamb is a fitting replacement of Andrew Ryan. 8/10

I was one of those who thought that the original bioshock was indeed a great game, but not a classic. It had many issues and for me it wasn't memorable. However, I dont question the game's brilliance. As a first person shooter Bioshock is as good as it can get( along with Half Life 2). I loved the fact that you play as a prototype big daddy and the story shows life in rapture from a big daddy's point of view. The gameplay has improved. There are more gene tonics, more plasmids, new weapons( the drill being the best of them all) and generally a refined experience. I actually though the story was just as good as the first's. The plot unfolds in a very subtle way and isn't a copycat to the first Bioshock's, as you would expect. The graphics are, more or less, the same but the sound is really fantastic. The sound effects really pulls you deeper into the game, I constantly had shivers thanks to the epic/scary music the game throws at you at certain times. So, to sum it all up, Bioshock 2 is brilliant. Anyone who thought Bioshock was one of the best games of all time would be dissapointed with this game. If you are like me and you really liked the first game, mainly the gameplay over the story, then Bioshock 2 will definatly be great for you. Nowadays it's dirt cheap( I bought it for 5 pounds) and I can tell it's worth much more then that. Fantastic game. Expand

A thrilling and entertaining game. Good graphics, a great amount of possibilities and... well, that's it. The storyline is too simple, it doesn't trap you at all (is the only bad point compared with it's predecessor). But, which is the principal objective of a game? To entertain the player. In my case, Bioshock 2 did it.

Loved the first game and this is a good sequel but suffers from sequel status too. Enough fresh ideas to keep things interesting, plenty of plasmid/weapon combos and fantastic nostalgic settings. Story was confusing and had to research online afterwards to find out what the hell it was about :-)

However, it didn't totally improved in all therms, although it is difficult to find a story as good as the one in the first game of the series the story in this game felt some times with a hole or two, and giving you a strange felling that something should have been mentioned in Bioshock 1. Despite some slight issues such as the graphics that should have been enhanced, other details make you feel a part of innovation at the gameplay and at the very scenario itself.

Graphics: Graphics still look amazing but compared to the first not much has changed. There are still far better looking games on the PS3. 9.

Sound: Great themes, level design goes great with themes. Voice acting is great. 10.

Gameplay: Same as Bioshock 1 but with more attachments. There are different weapons, and different enemies that are stronger to take down, and especially this time around with the big sisters. The game is actually a great challenge on the medium difficulty setting, and requires you to rescue/harvest little sisters to gain enough adam for upgrades. The new feature, now that you’re playing as a big daddy, is that you can choose to harvest dead enemies to gain additional adam. The issue with this is that every time you do this it spawns a wave of enemies that attack, and you have to defend the little sister while she harvests the body. It’s a really cool new game play feature although near the ending of the game it just gets way to difficult, and the reason is because the game doesn’t provide enough ammunition so I found myself at some points skipping the harvest and just taking the little sisters straight to the vent. Also, at times I would clear an area and step foot into another area, and head back that same second only to find splicers respawning. Bioshock 1 felt more organized when having you face splicers, while Bioshock 2 seemed to make it much more linear in the process, adding more and more splicers to constantly tackle making it feel too chore-y. Overall the game was a big challenge which is a positive, although I was frustrated with the amount of supplies that you get. The levels are structured really well, and the story continually progresses. The boss battles aren’t anything special, some have you clear out all the splicers only to battle the boss which looks similar to a splicer only with a huge health buff. The game doesn’t end with a strong memorable boss battle like the first game, instead takes a cheap wave fight. 8.5.

Story: The story is as well written as the first game, the pacing and twist aren’t as great as the first, but the ending leaves on a strong note also like the first game. You play as the very first Big Daddy (Delta), and the story unfolds from start to finish. 9.0.

Lasting Appeal/Value: The game contains a multiplayer that is decent/okay at best, the original game clocks in at about 8-10 hours on medium. The price for this game is free for PSPlus, and I’ve gotten this game on steam for like $5 bucks before. I’d say it’s worth getting. 10.

Overall Score: 9.3 out of 10.

While this game does feel a little too similar to the original and there are some design flaws, Bioshock 2 is a very fun action horror game and a great return to the underwater city of Rapture.

Having played through Bioshock 2 straight after completing the original (rather than waiting 2 years!), I have to say that I'm really disappointed. I think the Metacritic scores are just a bit too high and may reflect the fact the game just hasn't aged that well. Perhaps it scratched an itch to dive back into Rapture when it was released?

I think the Metacritic scores are just a bit too high and may reflect the fact the game just hasn't aged that well. Perhaps it scratched an itch to dive back into Rapture when it was released?

The consensus view seems to be that Bioshock 2 delivers on gameplay and combat but falls short on story -- sort of in the same way that the movie "Aliens" served as a more action-packed yet less atmospheric sequel to "Alien". I'd argue it falls short on the lot. Despite the promise of playing as a Big Daddy, the changes are mostly cosmetic: You're still wielding plasmids and weapons, you're still fighting the same enemy types and you're still doing the same kind of search and fetch quests. It's not terrible by any means and there's definitely more action and combat involved than in the first game, but I felt like I'd seen everything by the third or fourth hour.

Basically, so much of the experience feels like a bad re-tread of the original Bioshock. The level design is okay but basically like a less inspired versions of those you saw in the first game. The characters you meet are okay but again feel like weak stand-ins for the original's. Sofia Lamb is much less convincing a villain than Andrew Ryan, while Sinclair just never feels as helpful or important an ally as Atlas did. The supporting cast of weirdos has nobody as memorable as Steinman or Cohen. The only surprise I felt was when the game attempted some forced comedy, confronting me with a chatty egomaniacal flying robot and putting me in a mock game-show -- which came across as just plain dumb. It just all feels like a weak expansion pack, not a sequel.

In addition to being shallow, it's quite a short game -- at least it is if you exclude the time-consuming chore that is rescuing the Little Sisters. I can't help but feel that Bioshock 2 overhauled the rescue system just as a padding measure to fill time. To rescue a Little Sister you now have to kill a Big Daddy, walk the girl over to a dead body, protect her from a horde of enemies, walk her to a second dead body, protect her from another horde of enemies -- and then, if you're really unlucky, a Big Sister will jump out and fight you. It's boring and not fun. The original's morality system may not have been perfect but at least there was some incentive to being 'good'. Here, I was able to either ignore the Little Sisters or kill them without feeling any twinge of guilt.

And yes, I do have to admit that the Big Sisters are creepy and well-designed. You never quite know when they're going to pop out -- that first warning scream you hear is the closest thing you'll get to re-living that nervous moment when you had to take out a Big Daddy in the first game. But in the end, like a lot of this game, they are probably over-used and fighting them never seems quite as exciting as it should be.

All in all, a pretty average game that for me slightly tarnishes the Bioshock legacy. Bioshock Infinite is a truer sequel, even if it has its flaws. I think this game served its purpose maybe in 2010 but just hasn't aged well.

Not a sequel to the first Bioshock but definite connection to it. A game i enjoyed as much as i did the first one.

The plot, the storyline is what the series is all about. The previous game, and the one that follows (infinite) are not sequels but highly recommend playing in the order since they are all connected somehow

As far as the campaign mode is concerned, bear this in mind: it is not as good as the original BioShock, but it is still a great game, with a wise storyline and a nice atmosphere.

Saying that it is the worst BioShock game sounds rather fallacious to me, so I will say it is simply the less good one. Absolutely recommendable.

Bioshock 2 is really a story about what was left in remains after the first game. I love how it shows Rapture on its last legs and the rest of the twisted remnants that still lurk in the city. Granted, it doesn't have the iconic moments like the Cohen performance or the dark twists, but it does have a few good story moments.

Where the game truly shines is in its improved gameplay and focus to keep what worked and make it better. I never really enjoyed Bioshock Infinite as much as the first two, as it always seemed sort of rushed and scattered. As for the multiplayer, right now I can't imagine people playing, but from what I played, it seemed pretty standard.

This is one of the best possible sequels Bioshock could have had, for a great number of reasons. First of all, it's hard to create a story with a beginning that follows a few possible endings that the first game offered. First of all, it's hard to create a story with a beginning that follows a few possible endings that the first game offered. Depending on how you played Bioshock (the original) the ending was decided for you (or you decided it, depending on how you look at it). So, this game involves a completely different character and a completely different story yet set in the same underwater dystopia. It's not a direct or even perfect sequel because the stakes never seem greater when you follow a (yet again) faceless man. Due to this, the act structure of these two games is ridiculously similar (spoilers until the end of these parentheses. Act I: guidance from a mysterious but friendly man through radio while you learn about your abilities and acquire powers. Act II: learn your purpose and learn how to defeat the villain who wants you dead. Act III: learn the truth of your existence, defeat the villain and the person you've been talking to on the radio, and experience a bittersweet ending following your decisions throughout the game). That may be an oversimplified synopsis of the games but they are very similar in narative structure. That being said, this game really did improve on a lot of the parts that the first prided itself on, such as Tonics, Plasmids, Harvesting, and (most notably) the weapon selection. Tonics now aren't classified by arbitrary labels but now all fall in the same category of "tonics," immensely increasing the amount of useful ones that can be used at any time. Plasmids can still be "leveled up," but now the powers are significantly increased and can be paired with each other to double the damage (the "Decoy 3" Plasmid is an OP personal favorite). Harvesting is now even more helpful since you can walk up to a Little Sister, Adopt her, let her harvest ADAM which is given to you, and then you can choose to Rescure or Harvest while still getting the ADAM that she gained while with you. This way, you can still level up your Plasmids and Tonics while aiming for that happy ending we all want to see. As mentioned, the weapon selection wheel is my favorite addition to this game (or it was in the first and I had no idea) because I didn't have to repeatedly mash my right bumper to choose my weapon but instead, hold it down, select what you want, and the game resumes (you can also replenish health and use EVE in this paused feature). Being a Big Daddy was also neat, but I never felt stronger than I had as a normal man in the first game. Sure, it was cool to use the Drill Sprint mechanic and it was extremely satisfying to destroy frozen enemies with it but even with the suit, new powers, better tonic abilities, etc, I still felt extremely vulnerable at most times. NOTE: this is not a negative point. Being vulnerable in a video game is what makes it challenging, and what makes the challenges rewarding. This is one of the other reasons why this game is such an amazing sequel: the horror elements are even stronger and being in an enormous suit doesn't put your fears to rest. I definitely recommend this game and I might have to play them both again soon, after I complete the 3rd game, of course. Expand

While not up to par with its predecessor, BioShock 2 still provides a fun and engaging experience for the general player. Although lacking in gameplay mechanics, the story is as, if not more, compelling than the its older sibling. This edition provides a deeper knowledge into the world of rapture, showcasing the attributes of what makes BioShock such a success.

Unfortunately the story is hampered by returning to Rapture and its timeline. Something set a couple of decades after the original might have been better; as it is this ends up feeling like Bioshock Lite. But on a moment-to-moment basis the story is still serviceable and expertly directed and acted, so it's not a complete turn-off.

While combat has a steep learning curve, it will have you using a wider range of abilities than the original ever required. So if you can get over some initial frustration, the game becomes more and more rewarding and fair.

Final complaint is the sometimes awful hit detection, making a sure hit inexplicably miss. This resulting in me spamming shots and plasmids just to ensure contact, but even so I had a ton of frustrating deaths.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

But after finishing the game, i can say that i enjoyed encounters with them.

New guns were a little bit strange from begining but after few minutes i was able to kill my foes with it easily. Weapon upgrades are hidden like in first game, so its a little bit challenging to modify your weapons. I liked it.

Hacking tool system is much better than in Bioshock 1... honestly, its better to do it with tool than that tube hacking in first game.

Bioshock 2 delves back into Rapture, and does it well. Playing as a big daddy gives you a sense of power and invincibility, trading some of the horror aspects from the first game for a more action oriented game style. The story was good, but didn't have the quality you would necessarily expect after having played the first bioshock. Still, an enjoyable experience and a good second look at Rapture.

This second tour of duty with far superior toys is everything it needs to be, though. Familiarity breeds a little contempt, but as, simply, a game in which you shoot monsters in city under the sea, it's better in every respect.
