Battlefield 4 is a powerful entry in the multiplayer FPS scene, and improves vastly upon its predecessor. It is somewhat hindered, however, by a alarmingly large number of problems with its online component.

As seems to be the trend with most games in its competitive niche, Battlefield 4 adopts a single-player campaign largely for the purposes of marketing. It's short and provides some fairly impressive set pieces, but brings no advancements in narrative and fails to avoid invoking tropes in shooter campaigns that we've seen so many times.

Of course, it's the online multiplayer of Battlefield 4 that comprises the bulk of the game. It's a robust offering, with extremely developed player progression and deep gunplay and vehicle mechanics that outperforms competing games such as Call of Duty in certain respects. While the "Levolution" feature admittedly loses its charm after you've destroyed the same skyscraper for the third or fourth time, and so on, it's a novel element and a sign that the franchise is indeed still innovating. Player and weapon customization has been greatly expanded upon from Battlefield 3, and a real mix of balanced attachments and guns now make the "best" combination for a kit unclear, encouraging diversity. There have been some controversial moves taken with the kits and their respective equipment, but none that have clearly unbalanced the game. The two new game modes, "Obliteration" and "Defuse," seem to be more competitively-focused, and are welcome additions overall, drawing from concepts that Battlefield fans have been asking for.
Overall, Battlefield 4's gameplay is superb, and would have merited it a 9 or 10 rating from me were it not plagued by certain problems I'll discuss later.

The graphical quality of the game is amazing, and Battlefield 4 ranks easily among the best of this console generation's games in terms of of visual aesthetics.
Yes, Battlefield 4 is beautiful, but only when it works. To be blunt, the servers are in terrible condition, and you will often find yourself disconnected mid-game. You may find yourself losing records of stats, kills, stored experience boosts, and so on, with frustrating regularity. Both server-side and client-side patches have been promised to fix these problems, and they can't come soon enough. Speaking candidly, Battlefield 4 is an unfinished product.

One last qualm is with the new "Battlepack" system. EA seems to have placed this in the game as a way to introduce microtransactions into Battlefield 4 similar to Mass Effect 3's, but their purpose seems to have been confused. There's currently no way to purchase them, and yet they come in randomized packs with varying levels of rarity, like a collector's card pack would. The Battlepacks unlock at certain rank intervals, which would be an acceptable system were they not often made inaccessible by the unreliability of the servers.

That's the prevailing issue with Battlefield 4; it's a wonderful game, but only when you're able to play it.

I felt that this game deserves much better praise than what it has been given from the user reviews. Battlefield 4 is in no way a rehash of 3, it is in fact a definite improvement. For being the original "levolution" creator (Not Infinity Ward), DICE has been able to dynamically change the field in which you play. The player progression has gotten a total overhaul, with weapon usage unlocking newer weapons. This allows player to stick with what they like, while gaining that progression, and only trying out new weapons if they want to.

No one can expect the game to run flawlessly within the first month of release. And as multiplayer games become more and more complex, they WILL have those issues. DICE does a great job on staying on top of the problems that arise. They practically fixed their DDoS attack in less than 24 hours, and they continuously pay attention to what is going on within the community and correcting missed mistakes, no matter how many there may be.

I'm giving BF4 a 10 because they have proven, even if not to everyone, but at least to me, that they know what it takes to make a great FPS. CoD should not be the basis for what an FPS needs to look like. That's old news. That idea needs to evolve. And DICE may not accomplish it with BF4, but this clearly shows that they are on the right track.

IMO, this game is the disappointment of the year. The closer it got to the release date, the more I understood that it would be bad.
My major complain: this is not Battlefield 4, it's Battlefield 3.1. It's not step forward, it's step back.
This opinion is based only on ps3 version, not ps4 or pc. Let's start with the campaign. It's one of the worst fps campaigns I've ever played: it's

Let's start with the campaign. It's one of the worst fps campaigns I've ever played: it's all cliche, it's boring, it doesn't use any of Battlefield mechanics. I made myself to finish it (I don't know why). The only good thing is the ending: unlike other games, here you have to make decisions faster :)

The most disappointing thing about the game graphics. Don't get me wrong, I don't judge game only by its look. But the visual element of the game is worse than in BF3.

The multiplayer didn't change a bit:
    - Yes, we've got commander mode similar to bf2, but I've played for a couple of hours as a soldier, and haven't seen any activities from the commanders. People don't even care: no one signs as a commander.
    - "Dynamic" maps. Yeah, the skyscraper can be destroyed, the doors can be closed: this is not a big improvement and in general the maps don't change.
    - The only change I really felt was that now we have different progression for class gear and weapons.

I don't understand, why we have to get rid off bf3 addons and start all over again. The maps are horrible, especially the big ones, where it's impossible to find other players. I prefer COD multiplayer to this one. If you've played bf3, you've played bf4.
I think that EA is jealous of COD, and they try to copy different elements from it. It's a bad practice. If you can't create a good campaign, don't even try to do it.

BTW, I'm not a fan of COD series but I get more fun from cod than bf4.
P.S. Also filters for servers work strange: no matter how many people on a server I filter it always shows full servers..

Battlefield 4 is big step forward (ignoring the launch issues), the game is way more balanced now, levolution adds a great level of interaction to the every map. This game looks beautiful. The campaign is not the best I've played (it has a good base but its very rushy); but again, Battlefield is all about the multiplayer.

Page right out of COD, congrats EA your Activision's brother..
Game hasn't had as much of an experience since bad company 2. They're comfortable in rehashing last years crap slapping a new number on the end and calling it visceral. I own it and I play it, doesn't mean it's at all the best game graphics or experience wise. The campaign is flat again and the multiplayer experience lacks innovation.

This game is a lot better than battlefield 3 or bad company but its not much better to recieve that 10/10

Somehow it just didnt have the impact that BF3 had when it launched with big maps etc. Graphics on PS3 were a little bit...MOHW and end game of BF3....probably not the same people who put the original BF3 together. Still an awesome game and even more so now captures the essence of team play then its predecessor. I cant wait to see the PS4 version.

Though the new levolution feature is truly remarkable, it must be notified that the graphics seems to take a down-step from it's better-PS3 suited predecessor, Battlefield 3.

A game that would not be recommended to play on the seventh generation of consoles, players should play on the eighth for the actual great & breathtaking experience, it's what the game is designed for.

I love this game. The graphics, destruction, dynamic gameplay, etc. in this game are spectacular. However, it doesn't go unnoticed that DICE hasn't greatly improved much. Yes, you can collapse roads now and there are big set pieces in each map, but these are guilty pleasures and not great improvements to the game. Regardless, this game is one of the best this year, besides GTA V perhaps.

THE GOOD: great graphics, great new maps. it feels like bf3.5. It is better than bf3, but not a huge leap forward, but i like the fact that it's a "new" bf game and I wasn't expecting much more since I believe the programers are already taking the ps3 to it's limit. If we are expecting drastic improvements on graphics, get a PS4. Air vehicles are more balanced in terms of ground atack. Besides being a more underpowered, the AA missiles are much faster. The jets also fly faster (some users say otherwise, but I have the opposite feeling and I flew A LOT on bf3), Also, Air to Ground missiles of jets have to be locked until they hit target, you can't fire and forget and switch to guns to finish off a tank, which was the way I got huge jets scores on bf3. In Bf3 was that you could base rape a team with a heli. I could get 20/0 kd ratios with jets... Little bird vulcano canon could destroy tanks, now you need an upgrade etc.

THE BAD: some conquest maps are clearly designed for twice as many players (PS4) and they lack action. The navigation on the menus is very bad and confusing at first. I hope I can get used to it but it doesn't seem a good idea that you have to use a lot of controls and buttons to navigate menus to costumize your weapons etc. VERY confusing and you have to do this during the game.

THE TERRIBLE: Bugs. It froze my ps3 a dozen times at the end of the games in the middle of my cheering for my epic score (which btw is lost forever). It erased my campaign progress two times and I gave up on trying to play it until a patch is released. The jets can only fly in a ridiculous map strip, making them much less fun. It is almost impossible to have a decent dogfight. Combat jets are useless. I was never shot down and I also couldn't shoot down other players. Helis can fly on a larger area so I'm guessing they might solve this with a patch.

Maps overall are pretty ordinary, there are some standouts though, and the levolution is great.

As i said, overall its decent, i rate it higher than ghosts, but it does feel slightly inferior to BF3 on several fronts. I can't help but feel that with the number of bugs and moments of screen tearing that ive seen that it was made for next gen, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it would still have been nice if it had be "polished" a little more for this gen.

They restricted the maps down to just around the objectives but have a bunch of rooftops to perch on, not really a plus in my opinion. The ground lacks in depth ground features leaving you out in the open to be quickly sniped and the flight areas are too small to make a jet worth flying. they added 40x and 20x scopes for the sniper rifles as well as a way to zero them in up to 1000 meters, but most maps aren't near big enough to make that viable. There may be a spot or two in every map to get a shot that long, if you want to just sit in the back of the map. it's supposed to be a squad based game but the dynamics of it really doesn't lend well to working as a squad, most of the time you have to split up and head different directions anyway just to cover all the areas, and the recon class with the IRNV goggles and 20x scopes is so over powered on these wide open maps that the only way to combat getting sniped constantly is with a sniper. they added a Designated Marksman Rifle class, which is an idea i love, but they totally botched it by not having any scopes higher than 4x to put on any of the rifles. They did away with team chat so you can't communicate with anyone outside your squad, so often you get stuck in a helicopter or a tank with somebody that you can't talk to. There's a lot of things that made BF3 a good game that they managed to completely fail on in this game, for example smoke grenades in BF3 actually provided smoke thick enough that you could use it to cover movement and actually push up on your enemy, the smoke grenades in BF4 are completely worthless, you can see straight through the tiny amount of smoke the entire time. As far as i'm concerned most of the Levolution stuff doesn't really add to the game play (or make up for what's lacking in it), it may be a neat treat for the easily amused, but in my opinion it's more of a silly distraction from what the true battlefield fans look for and enjoy in the game. I know most of the true Battlefield players that i've talked to have all said that adding more maps and more items to BF3 would have been preferable to this disappointment.
And i haven't even gotten the absolutely terrible technical performance of the game itself. It's absurd that they sold this as published title, the game has so many bugs and issues i'd say it's barely fit for play testing. I played it for a week with just the occasional 3 or 4 console freezes a day, but as of this morning, i can no longer play support class. my console freezes every single time i attempt to deploy as a Support gunner. I wouldn't bother continuing to play BF4 for a couple years like i did with BF3 without the premium package and the extra maps and whatever else comes with it, but as it stands now, i can't see myself paying anything more for this game. Maybe if they fixed all the bugs, made the items work effectively, and took the inferred off the Laser Designator, i may continue to play. Custom servers would be a huge improvement as well. EA has once again robbed me, not only of my money, but of a game i WAS looking forward to the release of.

Actually feels like a war cause so much is going on. The sounds of the guns is good and I really like the "twing" as bullets ricochet of the ground etc. There's something really satisfying about being able to use a heavy machine gun to destroy a will and kill the guy behind it. I've heard people say that this game is slower and COD is fast paced. Really, being a COD fan, playing domination with 19 other guys is far more frantic that any COD game I've played. There are people and bullets flying everywhere and the physics of the guns is much better. They can actually kill you. Unlike COD where you empty a clip at a guy from 100m and yet he still manages to charge you with a knife and kill you.

Is it a rehash? Dont know as I never played BF before. For a newcomer, this game, although not perfect, is a very nice and refreshing change from the plate of crap I kept buying in COD.

There's definitely more of a focus on teamwork which is great, that being said, not everyone is used to this teamwork mindset so it can be frustrating when you're on a bad squad. It also doesn't help that they removed the ability to squad up from the main menu (the biggest con in my book), still though it isn't that hard to join your friend's game. When you do get a good squad however you can really dominate, and when you have two teams with good squads going head to head the gameplay gets really intense and exciting.

It seems more realistic. If you shoot your gun and still have 15 bullets in the clip but decide to reload so you don't run out of bullets in your next firefight you lose those 15 bullets that were in the clip.

There are lots of people are complaining about hit detection, and I've only found that to be true about one class of guns LMGs(At least the first few, later guns are pretty good). I feel therer's more of a focus on picking your shots as opposed to spray and praying. If you have enough skill to shoot short bursts at a time, you'll kill your enemy. If you want to just aim in direction of an enemy and hold R1 trying to get a kill, thanks for giving me 100 points.

The classes have stayed the same (Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon) but every class has different options now.

Assault now has to earn their defibulator and charge it, yes I said CHARGE IT... It also has limited uses and you don't have as much time to revive teammates (which works hand in hand with gameplay centered more on teamwork, no more running across the whole map and reviving someone. Stay close to your medic.) If you don't charge your defib they only spawn with 20% health but you can charge it up to 100% if you have the time.

Engineer Not too much has changed in this class outside of the fact that vehicles are easier to destroy so overall this class becomes stronger due to that fact (it’s not impossible to take out aircraft that have a million flares, now they have to wait to use flares again).

Support This is where you'll see a lot of your 0-5 ratings coming from whiners. Support is NOWHERE as CHEAP as they were in bf3. Suppression has been lessened in this game (Thank god), so now support can't shoot 100+ rounds at you and have your bullets disappear like they did in bf3 so they'll CRY about that (at least it felt like your bullets disappeared cus you could barely hit anything while under suppression). As I said before you have to pick your shots now and not just hold down R1 and destroy everything which I think requires no amount of skill, they'll cry about that. The new reloading technology will also put a toll on those that want to reload while they still have 60 bullets in their weapon, that's 60 less bullets for you. Support doesn't start off with C4 and recon does *cue more crying*. All that being said, support is still a good class it's just not as noob friendly and actually requires some, dare I say it, skill *GASP*!

Recon It feels great to play recon now, and the new additions to this class actually makes possible to play other game modes. This was my favorite class in bf3 and because of it I consequently hated conquest. In bf3 recon is pretty much insignificant in conquest because of one thing VEHICLES (Unless you were just camping on a mountain somewhere doing long distance sniping, which sucked). Recon could not do anything to defend themselves from tanks, helicopters, jeeps, pretty much any vehicle so I hated conquest. Bf4 recon can actually have an impact in the game because now we have C4 already unlocked from the get go, now I can play all game modes and conquest has actually become my favorite mode. Side note, the bullet drop has changed and definitely takes some time to get used to.

All classes now use carbines, DMRs (Semi auto sniper rifles), and shotguns. Carbines are great for those who pick their shots. DMRs are annoying but then again I've always felt like semi auto snipers take no skill (just my personal opinion though). Shotguns are sort of overpowered, they definitely pack a punch and make the same noise a sniper rifle does when it's suppressing you.

All in all this is a great game and definitely worth the money, also you can upgrade to next gen systems for only $10 which I plan on doing.

The only major con is no squading up from the main menu anymore. Why you do that DICE? For a game so focused on teamwork this step backwards makes no sense.

Final note: I feel (or hope) that bf4 was made for future gens and just ported to current gen. So when people complain that the maps are too big remember next gen systems will be 32 vs 32.

Talking as a single player gamer...
Terrible campaign. The history is dumb and has zero emotion, you just don't care about any of the characters, not even yours...
A lot, and I really mean A LOT of graphic glitches.
The A.I. for your squad members is a completely ineffective and plain stupid. Vehiche controls are a huge mess.
Wasn't expecting much, but still disappointed with this game.

I wish i could give halfs for this game because then my rating would be 1.5/10.

This game was a huge dissapointment to me, the maps are horrid, the controls are over responsive as your aim flies all over the place when you ADS. Assult kit seems to be the only kit worth using as the gun they give you at the start is a freking lazer gun, even though it seems like you will take ages to

The spawns are horrid even in a game mode like rush where you would think it would take no effort to spawn you away from your enimies, if you think that then youre WRONG.

And as for the maps, these maps are the worst pile of dog splooge ive ever come across, this one map wich i already forgot the name of is so bad i had to give it a -5/10, you spawn as attackers in a big open field, and as for the defender they get some of the best clipping spots in shooter game history, as you just as an attacker are destined to die over and over untill you run out of tickets.

So all in all this is probably one of the worst shooters ive played within the last 3 years MW 3 being the other one.

If you can put up with the freezing, and the glitches and the incredibly short campaign, you may get some value out of the multiplayer. Battlefield 3 being 3 my favourite game of all time before Battlefield 4 this will be a little bit biased but I found this game to an amazing piece of dice's work and so long as you don't go looking for any bugs you k
will not find many and an all round masterclass of a game beating Call of Duty Ghosts by such a long way.

Battlefield 4 shows a great improvement compared to it's predecessor. Though the gameplay was roughly similar, some new much needed features were added that really made it much better. The story, although not perfect, was greatly better than that of BF3.

DICE certainly focused a lot more on the campaign and tryed their best to make it great, but I felt like it could have been more.

DICE certainly focused a lot more on the campaign and tryed their best to make it great, but I felt like it could have been more. Multiplayer wise, the maps were mostly well designed and very easy to navigate once you get used to them. The game feels very balanced, and I almost never felt like it was one-sided.

The destructuble enviorement was well executed and well balanced. You can destroy huge buildings without ruining the entire map, wich was nice. The graphics were very realistic, much better looking than CoD: Ghosts, so that makes it a winner. The physics and sounds were almost as good as real life, but they lacked that certain «Oumpff» to make it perfect.

My only complaint is the uncountable amount of bugs this game contains. If you plan on buying it, wait a month or two so EA can fix all the bugs.

I played the game on PC but no doubt on consoles it is a setback for the graphics but it still plays very well and the multiplayer is really fun campaign is short but it is a nice addition but the multiplayer is excellent and if you are look to upgrade it to the ps4 definitely do so it is worth it

To blow COD out of the water, they will need a more polished game than this. Perhaps the next-generation will provide it.

So there you have it, the current-gen version of Battlefield 4. To be honest, it’s not a huge leap forward over Battlefield 3. It looks slightly better but performs slightly worse.

The really unfortunate thing with this Premium nonsense is that the greater body of players are made to feel like they're travelling in economy class, so that the core fans can be milked. I'm not anti-DLC, but the way Battlefield Premium constantly thrusts at you just feels grubby. It's not a nice way to treat paying customers, and it's a pity to see it besmirch such a great game.
