I live in in the 50th state, and I thought this game would be fun to play and watch since I live here in Hawaii. Though it's not accurate in the environments, as an expansive racing game it's fun! I like being able to drive anywhere around the island, whether you wanna race or just cruise around the landscape! If you live in Hawaii, this will be more entertaining.

This game is a great driving game, and a pretty damn good racing game. It has an expansive environment with lots to do and see. Its not a good hardcore racing game, because there isnt enough to do with your cars, but its the best overall driving game ive played. I gave it only an 8 because of the lacking features on the ps2 version. I would have loved the motorcycles and more cars like it This game is a great driving game, and a pretty damn good racing game. Also, in multiplayer mode, its hard to find races because there arent that many people on. Expand

Test Drive Unlimited is one of my favorite games and surely one of the game which took the most of my time. I have to say that what I like so much is the relaxing simpleness and freedom the game brings. I have to say that what I like so much is the relaxing simpleness and freedom the game brings. After a hard day of work I like just to cruise around for some time without any single race or challenge. But then you get it starts: getting seduced to drive a race, getting money, saving to buy a new car, the new car getting faster, winning more money becaus of being faster, and buying another new car. This is so addictive, and very well balanced in this game.
But the best of the game is great driving mechanics: I never played a playstation game where driving felt so real and the handling so much fun after getting a bit used to it. The fun is that you really progress quickly as you drive. And you really feel the wheight of car, the strength of it's motor and so on. That's why every car feels so different and - although I am a car-hater in real life - I heard myself saying: This car really is fun.
The downsides are the scenery which is nice but compared with other racing games pretty boring: Hawaii has some hills, beaches, volcanos, but in the game everything looks quite similar. No real dessert or jungle or mountain. The second problem is the frustrating moments when the car gets stuck because of hitting a street lamp with some pixels of it's front and you loose as many seconds that you have to restart the race all over again. Although that happens some times, the frustration is limited, because you are allowed to repeat the race, which normally is not longer than 5 minutes, as often as you like. The last thing I don't like is you are not allowed to use the analoge stick for accelerate and brake.
But the positiv moments of the game are much stronger than the negetive ones. The design decision I like most, is that you can drive cross country almost everywhere, Hawaii seems to be cover with grass which is short enough to play golf on it, so you can flee from the road even in a sports car. The challenges are not only races but also time trails and trying to be caught by speed traps with high speed. The police chases are nicely in the background of the game: this is not need for speed game. The tuning is just a simple choosing of three kinds of differently priced tuning kits: this is not an gran tourismo clone. There is no shooting and no tourbo. And that is exactly the nice thing: An allmost simulation like arcade racer in an really non-linear free open world mode where you are invited to free roam and explore for hours and build your wealth for weeks.

I own 20 racing games on the PS2 and this is my absolute favorite and the game I spend the most and most enjoyable time with. Why is it that great? For me game mechanics are very important, and this game has some really fun-realistic mechanics. They are arcady enough to be easily learned and realistic enough to be deeply immersing. Why is it that great? For me game mechanics are very important, and this game has some really fun-realistic mechanics. They are arcady enough to be easily learned and realistic enough to be deeply immersing. At no other PS2 game I ever felt the wheight of a vehicle and could tell the point the car is going to loose friction that good, as at TDU. The second thing I like is the freedom just to drive around and explore, if I feel like, and also to drive off the road. There are more than 200 tracks, so you don't get bored easily. More than the races in the game I enjoy the time trails and the challenges to have the highest speed in radar traps. The aim to earn enough money to buy a Lamborghini or a nice house at the seaside motivates on the one hand, on the other the addictive gameplay. So many times I said to my self "okay, only one more try". The learning curve is perfect, because you can choose how much challenge you want: stay longer with the slower D class cars? Or try as quick as possible to win the "professional" and the "master" races, timetrails and radar traps?
The downsides are few and week: The graphics could have more variety and get boring after some hours. There are mountains in the west, dryer regions in the center, rocks in the south, but the size and type of the road is almost the same everywhere, the buildings differ little and the trees look also pretty similar everywhere. The other downside is the variety in things to do: There are only 4 different race types, races, timetrails, radar traps and club duels. For GTA spoiled people this might be not enough missions.
For me Need for Speed was good on the PS1, on the PS2 I prefer Test Drive Unlimited! Even just in the single player mode.

One of my all time favorite racing games. It's full of dozens of vehicles to choose from. It has a good mix of Sim & arcade formula. Hard to stop playing it! One of the best racing games on the PlayStation 2, It's a MUST BUY!

Impressive, immense and pretty but somehow it fails to achieve greatness due to shortage of a variety of high-speed thrills. [Feb 2007, p.72]

Yes it's an extremely solid racer, and yes it does a good job at emulating the original 360 game, but ultimately, there are far better racers available. [Issue # 149, p.86]

Unlimited? Not quite. Expansive But Ultimately Shallow would be better, but that probably wouldn't fit on the box. [Mar 2007]
