Graphics are nothing to get excited about, but that's normal as PS2 has nothing left to offer graphics wise and foliage just can't be done right on it. The mullet thing needs to go to. With games like Splinter Cell 3 on the horizon, this only seems to have come out to take away some of its sales on the XBOX's original realease date of this November. It's too bad for Konami that Ubisoft put off the XBOX version until March, making this entire effort in vein. If you want to WATCH a good story unfold, maybe try this. If you want to actually PLAY a great stealth game, wait for SC3. At least you can PLAY it, instead of only watch it, and it lets you do real stealth moves and procedures along with graphics that stand up in 2004-2005, not graphics that were just OK in 1998-2001. This is possibly the worst series of games I have ever played. They're all so pointless. Gameplay was awful. Controls were just horrid. Storry was lame. AND HE CAN'T SWIM. He can walk up to people slit their throat, yet he can't swim? What a joke. Stick to games that are good like Splinter Cell. Konami is a mockery of a company.

Also a big problem is that you can't see your enemies before they can see you because of the camera. The first level is annaoying as hell, but if you can play through that the game starts to get a little better, but still this game has too many flaws to be an excellent game experience. Cutscenes are cool (but a little too long) and graphics are excellent for a PS2 game, but I'd rather buy subsistence. Expand

After every Metal Gear Solid the game and story gets better. Whenever I play an MGS game I think that Kojima cannot outdo himself be he does and that is why MGS is so good. MGS 3 is the best story in the series so far. The game is so engaging and emotional. If you did not cry at the end of the game I don't think any movie or game can make you cry.

Snake Eater is certainly worth playing. It's a decent game start to finish, but there are some major flaws I would like to point out. The long cut-scenes are not one of them. All the gameplay flaws from Sons of Liberty have been ironed out and your vitality in a combat situation is well improved.Snake Eater is certainly worth playing. If they are needed to tell the story, then they are okay in my book. Gameplay is well done. All the gameplay flaws from Sons of Liberty have been ironed out and your vitality in a combat situation is well improved. Now to some of my major complaints. I actually found the camera excusable in Sons of Liberty due to the small and narrow corridors. In Snake Eater, the camera work is less than stellar. Environments are expansive and huge. The camera is useless now that I can't see ten feet in front of me and the radar has been omitted. I ran into several occasions where the game turned into a frustrating run and gun in some of the areas populated by numerous enemies. There is now a food system, which I thought was implemented well, but now there is a cure system in which you have to pause the game and cure EVERY injury you receive. As you might expect, it can get rather tedious and is just an extraneous addition when bosses hit you with attacks that can constantly drain your health unless cured. The story of the game is superb. It becomes well appreciated and is very thoughtful. The soundtrack is once again composed by Harry Gregson-Williams and I have to say, it is a lot better than the occasional jazzy, lounge like tracks in sons of Liberty. But during the majority of the game, no music is heard except for bosses and alerts. I thought this made the game seem somewhat empty and unfinished. The graphics are gorgeous. They definitely push the PS2 to its limits. Overall, this is a good game especially if you are a fan of the series. It never reaches the heights of Sons of Liberty, but is a welcome addition to the franchise. My score may seem rather low, but if the camera issues and the cure system were fixed, I can definitely see this title receiving a 9. Expand

As a lot of people have already said: the controls are so horrible that I gave up with trying to play this game properly. I love sneaking games and really wanted to enjoy this also but I couldn't.

I literally spent hours at the start trying to figure out how to interact with the cover. The camera interaction, inverting controls, and dodgy object clipping simply ruined the experience for me. Everyone around me is saying "Snake, remember this is a sneaking mission". I know this, I'm trying my darndest to hide. It's just that I like to stand up when my elbow clips a tree and I also enjoy running out from cover because the controls have inverted on me. I honestly don't think this aspect could have been worse if they tried.

Something else that bugs me is Hideo Kojima's obsession with fan service. A little is fine and can actually improve the experience especially when it's subtle. Half naked women jumping out every 5 minutes and throwing themselves over Snake destroys all immersion for me, but then again, I'm 30 years old and not an adolescent pervert.

The game does look really nice and the character model interactions are also very good e.g. the punching, carrying bodies and alike.

A great story just awful game play.

I start up the game and encounter my first enemy. I remember I had a tranq-pistol and a knife. I tranquilized the enemy, and didn't want him waking up and compromising my mission, so I used the knife to stab him. After about a dozen or so stabs, my victim gets up. I then turned off my console.

Still a game worth playing but worse than MGS2. The camera is now frustrating. It was still fine when a radar was available but now it is too easy to get spotted because of it. There are too many things that break the rythm of the game (stalking, camouflage, eating, curing wounds...) and they kill the fun. If MGS2 is like a modern movie, Snake Eater is a movie from the '60, pace included.

The story is decent, yet addictive, with the highlights being the intriguing characters of The Boss and The End. I reccomend playing through the game with no-radar and force yourself to clear each area without getting spotted. My biggest gripes with this game are with the controls/camera scheme (the reason I am not giving it a 10). It is just time to upgrade to 1st or 3rd person (frontal view). It interefers with some of the early boss fights and generally makes sighting enemies (who are right in front of you!) difficult. Managing the selection menus gets old fast. Also it would have been more classier if The Pain and The Fear had better dialogue. Something about The Fury swaring when you shoot him was just dead on how boss dialogue should go. Lastly, if you nuke an area then return to it later in the game it would be totally devastated not peacfully intact (after Virtuous Mission). Hopefully this game will help inspire a new direction for stealth based games (I am sick of office/industrial complex environments). Expand

Even the whiny, gay-ish Raiden didn't turn me off. After that experience, I was determined to get MGS3: SE. I certainly did not regret it. The great graphics, riveting plot got me hooked. Survival in the jungle is the game's most innovative concept, with the camoflaging, curing and food catching. The detail in this game is amazing! For example, at one point when you have to rescue Sokolov, a scientist, you can shoot into the room he's being held and hear him utter a cry! Absolutely amazing! The bosses in this game might be brilliant for some, or utterly rubbish for others. Bosses range from a Hornet manipulating freak to a sniping old man.. but when you've fought a fat guy on roller skates and a bisexual vampire, it really isn't much. Also in this game, is the appearance of the young Shalashaska, also known as Revolver Ocelot later on in the series. You play as Big Boss, the man who intiated the "Les Enfants Terribles" project, that cloned Solid, Solidus and Liquid Snake. Big Boss is, in my opinion, the most interesting character in the series. Hideo Kojima is one of the most dynamic game producers in the world, but he needs to get his head out of his own arse and his ego under control. 20 minute cut scenes? Particularly when much of this time taken by characters repeating and rerepeating core philosophical concepts (which are not as impressive as Kojima would like us to think) or blathering irrelevance. As usual, the Japanese sense of humour and plot/character development fail to translate to a Western audience, though that can hardly be blamed on anything more than cultural idiosyncrasies on both sides. The camera system is indeed flawed - almost to a fatal degree. Try stalking an enemy soldier southwards so you can't see them on your screen, and you don't know when to act. Infuriating. What maintains this game however, and keeps it as a "good" game, are moments of sheer gaming bliss scattered strategically throughout the game, particularly the boss battles. The graphics and sound are gorgeous (though some of the voice acting... why does Snake have to deliver every line in the same constipated tone? They need a new actor) and when the game allows you to play it your way, it couldn't be more fun. A muddled, messy, but ultimately enjoyable game. Expand

This game is spectacular, anyone who doesnt think this game is good or think it sucks, is out of their mind, in fact anyone who says it sucks is a [Ed: Come now...], this is the most realistic game i have ever played along with metal gear solid 1 and 2. this game has the best graphics, the story keeps it interesting, the fact that you can heal yourself, have a range of weapons and tactics This game is spectacular, anyone who doesnt think this game is good or think it sucks, is out of their mind, in fact anyone who says it sucks is a [Ed: Come now...], this is the most realistic game i have ever played along with metal gear solid 1 and 2. this game has the best graphics, the story keeps it interesting, the fact that you can heal yourself, have a range of weapons and tactics to use throughout the game makes it even more phenomenal. The controls are very easy, its like any other new game you get, just leanr it and get used to it. The AI is amazing, and the way you have to hide and outsmart the enemy if your caught makes the game even more realistic. Now anyone who says this game is garbage, is a complete moron and shouldnt be allowed to play and game console. There are a few flaws, but wat game doesnt have flaws, because there are soldiers who can contorl bee's or control electricity or act like a spider or anything like that makes the game fake BUT good and different, and these difference make you as a gamer challenged in the enviorment provided as well as the weapons and other items. Hideo Kojima is by far the best producer in the gaming industry. The script was well acted also. Whoever rates this game below an 8 obviously doesnt know anything about the facts i just pointed out about this game and the detail put into. Those type of gamers play crash bandicoot, or city crisis, or some garbage game that has no detail, or organized scripts or good gameplay. I've never been in the jungle at war but i can garantee that this game make you feel you are there virtually. I suggest you play at night time for better experience. Greatest Series ever. Expand

Metal Gear is the definitive PlayStation series. Snake Eater is by far the best of the series. The jungle gameplay was nice to change up the facility type action that was seen in MGS and MGS2. The story is about 3 times longer (I'm talking about cutscenes and gameplay) than the previous two. If not, wait for MGS3: Subsistence to come out in March, 2006. It's the updated version of Snake Eater with added online features. Expand

A milestone for gaming! Without a doubt, this has some of the best story-telling I have ever come across to in anything. For me this is tied with Zelda: OOT for the best game ever and it's also the best prequel ever made! Is that good!

A magnificent achievement in gaming! MGS3 can challenge any great film in terms of terrific story-telling- strong, compelling characters, and fantastic action sequences that are to die for.

When all is said and done, Snake Eater achieves what no other game can on such a level: complete immersion into an action-driven interactive movie.
