It's exceeded by its enhancement, Subsistence. But that doesn't take away from the fun I had before it. Pros: Excellent graphics and sound; greatly told, involving storyline; charismatic characters; variety of moves and weapons. Cons: Dated camera system and poor control; too much dialogue may turn off certain gamers.

Basically this one is totally different from the other MGS games is focused more in the survivalist way rather than an a urban zone. This installment is set on the jungle and the main protagonist is Big Boss (the original Snake or Naked Snake). I loved the game and is very entertaining the story ,the gameplay etc. You made it again Hideo Kojima

This was the weakest entry in this series but that is not really saying a bad thing, with it still being a great game when you compare it to others. I would definitely recommend this if you own a PS2 and want an amazing game for a low low price.

I fail to see the widespread appeal in this installment. Despite loving both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 (and later the portable games) I found Snake Eater a chore. Unlike some other negative scorers I love the long cutscenes and plots that the Metal Gear series offers, the only plot/codec based annoyance for me was the restating of the controls for the first 10-15 minutes. Unlike some other negative scorers I love the long cutscenes and plots that the Metal Gear series offers, the only plot/codec based annoyance for me was the restating of the controls for the first 10-15 minutes. The story is a convoluted train wreck which seems to lack any clear direction in places leaving characters to paraphrase what has been said before. I also found it the least interesting in the Metal Gear franchise, as the Cold War scenario eventually boils down to nothing more than a metal gear hunt, wasting much potential. However, the story is passable enough (and short enough - in comparison to the others at least) to carry the game. The gameplay suffers in the jungle environment too. The food system is a fun addition, if nothing more than a gimmick - as is the camo system. Unfortunately the upsides of the jungle end there. For the most part the game feels like a corridor shooter with a few trees painted on the walls. It lacks the amazing artistic direction that so many other games on the Playstaion 2 show. Being a prequel (so it isn't referenced by the rest of the series often) Snake Eater is well worth a go, because it's something you can leave part way through and skip onto the next title in the series. Also a big problem is that you can't see your enemies before they can see you because of the camera. The first level is annaoying as hell, but if you can play through that the game starts to get a little better, but still this game has too many flaws to be an excellent game experience. Although the controls of the game can be cumbersome at first once you get used to them the game really takes off. The game is survival but if you just want to sneak changing the game mode to easy or normal makes that feature almost none existent. The game feels real, there's a huge amount of realism, you heal wounds, hunt animals, lose energy, look through sights to aim weapons(rather than everyone having a laser pointer, enemies react differently depending on where they're shot and so many more innovations. Hideo Kojima makes a gmae that fels like a movie, the cut scenes are long but entertaining and if your a fan and sometimes even if your not the story sucks you in. The greatest thing about metal gear is how it's compatible with most gamers, if you want to be a real spy, you sneak distracting enemies then quietly sneak by or holding them up at knife point for information, if you want to be an ak welding psyco grab some ammo, some rockets and shoot everything that moves(and doesn't move). The 5 difficulty settings very easy, easy, normal, hard and extreme are basically to raise or lower the realism and offer replay value up the ying yang. The game is fun, innovative, with gripping story line a pure classic master peace. Perfect 10. Expand

Still a game worth playing but worse than MGS2. The camera is now frustrating. It was still fine when a radar was available but now it is too easy to get spotted because of it. There are too many things that break the rythm of the game (stalking, camouflage, eating, curing wounds...) and they kill the fun. If MGS2 is like a modern movie, Snake Eater is a movie from the '60, pace included.

Hideo Kojima is one of the most dynamic game producers in the world, but he needs to get his head out of his own arse and his ego under control. 20 minute cut scenes? No matter how good the story is (and its not that great), that is not warranted. Particularly when much of this time taken by characters repeating and rerepeating core philosophical concepts (which are not as impressive as Kojima would like us to think) or blathering irrelevance. As usual, the Japanese sense of humour and plot/character development fail to translate to a Western audience, though that can hardly be blamed on anything more than cultural idiosyncrasies on both sides. The camera system is indeed flawed - almost to a fatal degree. Try stalking an enemy soldier southwards so you can't see them on your screen, and you don't know when to act. Infuriating. What maintains this game however, and keeps it as a "good" game, are moments of sheer gaming bliss scattered strategically throughout the game, particularly the boss battles. The graphics and sound are gorgeous (though some of the voice acting... why does Snake have to deliver every line in the same constipated tone? They need a new actor) and when the game allows you to play it your way, it couldn't be more fun. A muddled, messy, but ultimately enjoyable game. Expand

The random little sneak peaks of female characters in compromising positions served no purpose except to maybe try and get the players all hot and bothered--but just distracted from the seriousness and sense of urgency that the rest of the game seemed to try and impart. Administering first aid was a pointless chore. Eating was a pointless chore. And when I wasn't doing those things, I was playing dress up with Snake and watching a little camoflauge percentage indicator in the corner of the screen. From what I could gather of the plot, it was completely linear. I felt like I was on rails. Nothing was fun. Hiding from AI is not exciting. I couldn't care less how many different ways there to slit a guys throat. And I was forced to wade through over an hour of the crappiest attempt at a video game movie I've ever seen to play this? Worst voice acting ever. I probably would have loved it for the kitsch value, but when you have to slog through so much of it, and press the x button every five or ten minutes just to get through it, you start to wonder who the hell thinks he's such a hotshot videogame producer that he seriously thinks people will buy into this crap. And it seems like everyone has! I just don't get it. I wanted to love this game. I wanted to play something different and new, but there was absolutely no flow. Considering how groundbreaking and dazzling I had heard this game was, I am mystified that I could never even get off the ground with it. I am just glad that it was a rental and that Snake fans seem happy with it. Unless MGS 4 changes the camera, there's no way I'll be playing it. And if Hideo Kojima wants to subject me to another utterly pretentious take on directing a screenplay, forget about it. I don't play chores, I play video games. Expand

The game is also a lot longer than the other Metal Gear solid games, taking 20 to 25 hours on a first time through the game. The controls are the usual for the PS2 Metal Gear Solid games, which is not a bad thing at all. And the story is VERY compelling, especially if you are a Metal Gear Solid fan. The controls are very easy, its like any other new game you get, just leanr it and get used to it. The AI is amazing, and the way you have to hide and outsmart the enemy if your caught makes the game even more realistic. Now anyone who says this game is garbage, is a complete moron and shouldnt be allowed to play and game console. There are a few flaws, but wat game doesnt have flaws, because there are soldiers who can contorl bee's or control electricity or act like a spider or anything like that makes the game fake BUT good and different, and these difference make you as a gamer challenged in the enviorment provided as well as the weapons and other items. Hideo Kojima is by far the best producer in the gaming industry. The script was well acted also. Whoever rates this game below an 8 obviously doesnt know anything about the facts i just pointed out about this game and the detail put into. Those type of gamers play crash bandicoot, or city crisis, or some garbage game that has no detail, or organized scripts or good gameplay. I've never been in the jungle at war but i can garantee that this game make you feel you are there virtually. I suggest you play at night time for better experience. Greatest Series ever. Expand

The story is decent, yet addictive, with the highlights being the intriguing characters of The Boss and The End. I reccomend playing through the game with no-radar and force yourself to clear each area without getting spotted. My biggest gripes with this game are with the controls/camera scheme (the reason I am not giving it a 10). It is just time to upgrade to 1st or 3rd person (frontal view). It interefers with some of the early boss fights and generally makes sighting enemies (who are right in front of you!) difficult. Managing the selection menus gets old fast. Also it would have been more classier if The Pain and The Fear had better dialogue. Something about The Fury swaring when you shoot him was just dead on how boss dialogue should go. Lastly, if you nuke an area then return to it later in the game it would be totally devastated not peacfully intact (after Virtuous Mission). Hopefully this game will help inspire a new direction for stealth based games (I am sick of office/industrial complex environments). Expand

And the graphics....I dont think anyone thought the PS2 was capable of this. The bosses, while extremely unrealistic(a trademark of the MGS series-unrealistic but cool and fun bosses) are really cool and the battles are amazing. The best was The End, which was a long sniping battle like the movie Enemy at the Gates except in the forest, a plateau, and a ravine. To be honest-all the boss battles are really cool. The plot is very good, but here is my only complaint-there arent as many plot twists as 2, and no freaky weird place like arsenal gear(which was my personal favorite "level" in any videogame ever). The plot is mostly straightforward and normal, with not as many long scenes, except the conclusion which is about 30 mins. The GREAT story, good graphics for its time, incredible detail (look up with binoculars equipped when in the outdoors and poop falls from the sky) made me play it to death. Even the whiny, gay-ish Raiden didn't turn me off. After that experience, I was determined to get MGS3: SE. I certainly did not regret it. The great graphics, riveting plot got me hooked. Survival in the jungle is the game's most innovative concept, with the camoflaging, curing and food catching. The detail in this game is amazing! For example, at one point when you have to rescue Sokolov, a scientist, you can shoot into the room he's being held and hear him utter a cry! Absolutely amazing! The bosses in this game might be brilliant for some, or utterly rubbish for others. Bosses range from a Hornet manipulating freak to a sniping old man.. but when you've fought a fat guy on roller skates and a bisexual vampire, it really isn't much. Also in this game, is the appearance of the young Shalashaska, also known as Revolver Ocelot later on in the series. You play as Big Boss, the man who intiated the "Les Enfants Terribles" project, that cloned Solid, Solidus and Liquid Snake. Big Boss is, in my opinion, the most interesting character in the series. Play the game and you'll know. This game is definitely worth buying. It doesn't matter if you are a Metal Gear guru or a newbie wanting to try the series. Just get it! Expand
