Disney and Square Enix have done it again with their sequel to their massive surprise hit. Though the story can get a bit confusing and some levels are a bit annoying to get through. The new worlds, bosses, music, and new characters are truly a great reason to experience this game if you loved the first one.

If Kingdom Hearts was a good foundation for a series, Kingdom Hearts II was a near perfection of it. Practically every single aspect from the first game has been taken here and improved upon, with one or two exceptions.
The story is a good follow-up to KH and Chain of Memories, introducing new elements and characters that flow very well throughout the campaign. Voice acting has been improved upon, holding up even better than KH. The character models and environments still look good for being a PS2 game, similar to that of the first game. However, the facial animations are still the same mixed bag that they've been for over ten years, at least until Kingdom Hearts III came along. I've heard a lot of people complain about how Sora sounds in this game, but I have the opposite problem. i find Sora's voice slightly annoying in the first game, but in this one he sounds more mature and just better all around.
The worlds in this game have both been improved and degraded from the first game. In one area, getting lost almost isn't a thing anymore, thanks to two new additions from Square-Enix: The Minimap and the objective bar. These were two of the smartest additions to the series as a whole. However, the worlds have lost some of the verticality they had in KH. everything is more flat, and less interesting. It's not to the level that Birth By Sleep is, but it's a little disappointing. However, in the grand scheme of the whole game, it isn't the biggest problem, and The World that Never Was (the final level) is incredibly fun to explore, so it hasn't all been lost.
The combat in this game is one of the biggest improvements brought to this game. It blows KH's combat out of the water, with an improvement of movement speed, agility, and aerial combat. You have your standard stuff like the Keyblade, Magic, and Limits, but there are more skills for the Keyblade than ever before, making fights a beautiful dance of flying around the screen beating everything up with an oversized key. The best new addition comes in Drive forms: temporary powerups that change Sora's fighting style drastically, upping the style factor. Leveling up these forms also gets you new agility moves, like ground dashes, air spins, high jumps, dodge rolls, and flying. There is so much you can do, it may feel overwhelming at first, but once you get into the flow, everything falls into place.
The bossfights are incredible. Each is distinctive from the last, bringing something new to the table. the Heartless bossfights are good as usual, but the ones that really stand out are against a group introduced in Chain of Memories: Organization XIII. Each member you fight has a new moveset, making them always feel fresh. Two of them in particular are immense challenges. You may be stuck on them for a very long time. You may feel like giving up, but they can be beat, and once you do, it's one of the best feelings in gaming. The final boss especially is one of the best I have seen in gaming. It's dynamic, interesting, full of cool set pieces, and a real challenge that once you get to the very end of, you reach one of the best moments (that I won't spoil) I have ever witnessed.
This game is kind of hard to jump into if you don't know the stories of Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories, but if you do or don't care about story, this game is a near masterclass of a game, one that would establish a baseline that every time a new Kingdom Hearts game came out, people would point to KHII as the golden standard it had to live up to.

Of all the action RPGs I've played, this is among the unforgettable. This is the only game I've played in the series and I was still blown a way by heart and soul put into this game. Not only am I playing through a soothing story with an anime setting, but I'm also experiencing the nostalgia of all my old favorite Disney movies, even the ones I haven't seen in ages. And that nostalgia is like meeting up with an old friend. I haven't played the first game in the series, but the flash backs tell me everything I need to know. I understand all these charters thanks to excellent emotion animation.

It's a moving sensation, to feel connected to something you've only known for a little while. When my eyes caught those gorgeous levels, the creative designs of the villains and the Heartless...I was thunder struck.

Well If I would give kingdom hearts 1 an 8 and If I think kingdom hearts 2 is better in almost every single way then I'd give it a 9 lol overall fun story, amazing and fun and smooth gameplay that ages very well, and it gives you so much more freedom and don't even get me started on the ost in conclusion very good game.

KH2 has good combat, story pacing, good bosses, and does everything better than 1.

Still KH1 is a good game, and KH3 pales in comparision to them.

Great, but not as good as the original. The story is still fantastic, and the gameplay was revved up a bit more, but it still didn't have the charm of the original. The ending boss fight is great, and the CG's are beautiful. (The opening in particular.)

It's not prefect. the game is way easy, I played this game on prode mode (hard). beliving they would do this. after all they did it to the FF seiras Consiter the first game was viewed as being a bit too hard for the younger kids playing the game and to brouden the appeal.

On the presentation side, KHII is nearly flawless aside from some weird Disney character lines not fitting. The graphics are simply amazing for a PS2 and have aged wonderfully. The music is top notch, and the camera actually works 99.9% of the time. While this is perfectly fine most of the time, the problems comes from the fact that your abilities and enemy difficulty are completely unbalanced. Without using limits or drive forms, enemies are decently challenging, but drive forms throw a monkeywrench in by making it so easy to just wipe the floor with them, even on proud mode(hard). Magic is also extremely useless outside of healing and reflecting, and even that is a huge pain. I really really wanted to love this game, and I still like it, but there are a few huge flaws with it's gameplay that cannot be ignored Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is one of my favorite Kingdom Hearts games and my second favorite PS2 game. The first being KHI. I loved the way that it brought back some old worlds and also brought in some amazing new ones like Pride Rock and the Land of Dragons. One of the things I didn't like was that the Olympus Colosseum games were moved to the Underworld which in my opinion took the feel out of that world. Also, there was no Traverse Town. I don't mean that the world should have came back, I just wanted a hub world. I know that Hollow Bastion was supposed to be that but it again didn't have the same feel to it and I didn't visit that world unless the game took me there. Another thing is that there was no real plot. In KH1, Sora was looking for his friends, in KHCOM pm he was looking for Namine but on the second one, I had no idea. However, again I loved the new world additions especially Port Royal but if in KH3 is like KH2, then I won't be rushing out to but a Playstation 3 Expand

Graphics and gameplay mechanics are superb, with amazing visual effects and a camera that functions properly (unlike the one in the first game, I shudder at the memory). But many people argue that the storyline, although captivating, is linear and repetitive. Go to a new world, fight some enemies, seal the keyhole, lather, rinse and repeat. While that is true, you don’t even realize that it’s happening until more than halfway through the game. And even with the pattern, each world has something unique and different that lessens the similarities. One bad thing I will say about the game is that the difficulty is very low. Compared to the first game, where the triangle and square combos are essential to progress, you can beat this game by mashing only the ‘x’ button. And even if you haven’t played the first game, it’s pretty obvious that this game in and of itself is simple. Expand

You still visit a variety of Disney lands, but theres more emphasis on the original kingdom hearts story this time around than just helping out Disney characters…
This time youre after a group known as organization 13..
The group that caused all of the memory loss problems of soar in the past games that you fought so hard to re earn…
There also after the kingdom hearts... for reasons I wont say…
Youre still taking out the heartless and resealing doors in different Disney worlds… but now youre dealing with a new set of enemies known as nobodies… who are pretty much just white versions of the heartless…
Theyre not in any way harder to deal with…
The deliver of this game is miles better than the original kingdom hearts.. it’s about 8 hours longer clocking in at around 33 hours but doesn’t feel nearly as long thanks to the near perfect pacing of this game that only hiccups towards the end when you have to fight through 90,000 boss battles to get to the credits much like the original kingdom hearts…
but the other 30 hours is fast paced and despite the open world style like the original, feels much more linear and there’s little to no back tracking at all.. you can play through this game without a guide easily as it doesn’t waste your time… the game even does a great job most of the time stopping you from going in the wrong direction reminding you where you should be going next in the world…
The draw for most people is the Disney properties, and you won’t be disappointed as you go to a variety of new locations to meet characters like Mulan, and jack sparrow.. Even finally going to the places of characters you meet in past games like beasts castle….
And the gummi ship part is back and somehow worse than the last time... seriously... get rid of them.. There still not fun...
There are a handful of locations from the past games too such as atlantics and Halloween town... but they all feel fresh and tell new stories of the characters.. Even during the 2nd half of the game when you have to revisit each location all over again... the game still manages to deliver a fresh experience each time…
the delivery of the story isn’t the only thing that got a makeover…
Unfortunately the game play style did as well…
The original kingdom hearts had a great deal of 3d platforming elements, epic boss battles and a watcher 3 style combat system where it was all about strategy.. Dodging attacks parrying…
Kingdom hearts 2 has practically erased all 3d platforming elements and turned this into more of a baby’s first god of war game…
Its heavily hack and slash and combat encounters as insanely easy compared to the original... which is a shame because it kills all satisfaction…
They also got rid of the ability to roll and high jump outside of this new system called a drive form…
You literally have to fill up a meter to be able to roll in combat.. awful idea and makes it feel slow and again hack and slash like a god of war game rather than fast and fluent like a watcher 3 style…
And the boss battles here aren’t these epic showdowns with villains…
your fighting generic heartless bosses for the most part and members of organization 13… and the game ads time trials and other gimmicks to encounters rather than having unique showdowns the original head…
There’s nothing memorable in the gameplay….
Sure it’s more fun to go through kingdom hearts 2 than kingdom hearts one…
But the original kingdom hearts felt more satisfying to get through...
A mix of the 2 and you have a perfect game…
You just feel too handcuffed here…
The game chooses when you can and cant use your drive forms, it chooses when you can and cant call in a summon… it locks off simple abilities like rolling.. .
The new MP gauge is 1 line instead of broken up leading to a lot of guess work when using the magic which honestly discouraged me from using it at all…
But the story pulled me through… the charm of the Disney worlds and characters pulled me through…
This is my favorite kingdom hearts game so far…
I just hope to see a marriage of 1 and 2 in Kingdom Hearts 3
    I give Kingdom Hearts 2
    an 8/10

The game is short (30 hours) and when it's finished you feel that you want to continue the story, like in Kingdom Hearts I. In Spain, voices have been dubbed and this is always good. What I didn't like it is that Sora is always saying the same in every planet: "We are Sora, Donald and Goofy". You feel that the creators of the game didn't have anything more interesting to say...
