This is a beautiful horror game and most importantly it is VERY Japanese. 12 years ago this game actually motivated me to learn Japanese because I wanted to understand the plot. I think it's very unfortunate when people do not understand Fatal Frame games because of cultural differences. I would say it's worth to learn Japanese for this game :)

On the game itself, 2 is the most unique and perhaps most beautiful entry out of the 3 PS2 FF games in my opinion.
    1. It's quite easy compared with 1 and 3. (Difficulty wise it's 3>1>2) Camera also lacks charging mechanism.
    2. It's not as scary and claustrophobic. Except for a few levels...like the black and white chasing sequences...
    3. Colour palette is more vivid and warmer than the two other games.
    4. It's about sisterly love, while 1 and 3 are about loss of loved ones, sorrow and agony.
    5. The ending is perhaps one of the most famous in video game history. It's legendary for a reason. You have to play the game to watch it for yourself. I thought (and still think) that there is no place for songs with vocal in a game unless they are ballads, but "Chou" by Amano Tsukiko changed my opinion.

There is a reason people still pick the original PS2 game over the remake including myself. Not only gameplay mechanism is better and characters look more authentic (because of the unnecessary face job, Mio and Mayu in the remake look artificial, almost like dolls), but the perfect blend of the intro of the song and ending movie created the most shocking, haunting and beautiful PS2 game experience, while the Wii ending does not evoke the same feeling.

**I read the other reviews and no one mentioned the amazing atmosphere or the plot? What the hell?! Is the English version lost in translation that's why no one cares for it?

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is and improvement from the first in some ways, and weaker in others.

    Where it improves:
-Well to start off, it all the Fatal Frame games, items do not res-pawn, so if you used up all your film in the first one when fighting ghosts, you were screwed. Same went for medicine, and towards the later parts of the game this started to piss me off, and rather than feel like a difficult challenge, it felt like an unfair trap. Fatal Frame 2 offers a default film that doesn't run out, but is weak. This at least gives you a fighting chance if you run out of film, and makes it so that you are still provided with a challenge

-More interesting and difficult puzzles. The puzzles Are more difficult to solve, and actually vary unlike the first one

-Is more scary. The ghosts are scarier. They look scarier, and creepier, and act creepier too. They can be unpredictable, and hard to see even when visible because they blend in. Where in the first game, the ghosts were blue, so easy to see, but in this one they are grey.

-THE GAME IS LONGER!! Fatal Frame was between 4-5 hours long. This is almost 11 hours long!

    Where the game weakened:
-Well, just as a side note, the game still has you backtrack a lot, but thankfully the game varies wile you do this. But what really hurts the game a little bit is that it's wide open, so 1/6 of the game feels like running long distances all for the sake of backtracking. This is not really a major issue, because the game keeps you entertained while doing so.

-Some of the puzzles can be unfair. This happened twice in the game. There are two puzzles where there is a door in the wall, and it doesn't look like a door, it just looks like a wall. Unless you walk around pressing "X" on EVERYTHING in the entire room, you won't find it. I ended up searching up where these doors were.

All pros and cons aside, Fatal Frame II is an improvement with inevitably a few problems, but it has interesting gameplay, scary moments, and creates the effects you expect from it's genre :D

The atmosphere is definitely creepy, but this just wasn't my cup of tea. I like to fight monsters, not take a picture of them to "fight" them. Granted the ghosts were pretty terrifying-looking, I was never scared. I just didn't find the game fun at all.

Scariest game I've ever played, although SIlent Hill is a close runner up. I had nightmares for quite awhile, but that was a good thing. The worst part about the game is the agonizingly slow pace of Mio's running.

Yes it is plagued by Resident Evil syndrome wherein you have predesignated camera angles in rooms that add frustration to the clunky movement of you're character. Thank god the game is incredibly easy and I mean its really just running around-bump into ghost (or wall)-simple attack pattern-click-flash-fatal frame-dead-dead ghost. Thats the game outside of some pretty average puzzles and tracking down keys along finding some cryptic clues have yet to explain many things in full about the ultimate plot. I'm guessing thats not the focus here though. The camera is an excellent concept, the upgrading is cool and customization is fantastic. It is however, overpowered and dispatches those pesky ghosts pretty quickly especially when you find the more powerful film soon after the beginning. The unsettling details of terrible deaths and even "replayed" said terrible deaths are more intense then the combat alone though. You will quickly start asking yourself: "why are the rooms up until the ghosts creepier than my fights with ghosts?" Its also not very scary, but the atmosphere is quite good and enjoyable if you like that sort of theme in you're horror genre. Another thing that I found odd was- exactly how are you killed by a ghost? I mean when a ghost touches my ankle how exactly do I take damage from that? When a ghost gives me a hug- how exactly did that detract from my health? It also doesn't establish why some ghosts are just neutral. Like the many apparitions you take snapshots of or clues that require you to "exercise" a ghostly spirit for some reason they aren't harmful? Oh, but restless ghostly spirits are though! Right. It kind of just makes up these pre-established rules, but its not a huge deal. Its still great if you enjoy this series. It does a lot of things right and its fun too. The village is quite linear though and the game is a bit on the short side although over-all its a great experience. Expand

Wow. This game. Fatal Frame 2 was a great sequel in almost all aspects. The story was infinitely better and created a real depth that the first one desperately needed. The graphics were improved and the location offered a lot of variances as it was an entire village rather than one mansion, so you had more indoor and outdoor locations and not nearly as much backtracking. The graphics were improved and the location offered a lot of variances as it was an entire village rather than one mansion, so you had more indoor and outdoor locations and not nearly as much backtracking. The ghost design was more haunting, and having other characters/survivors around created a lot more tension. The bond between the two main characters was great and really connected them to the story and what happened before you arrived rather than seeing the aftermath through a window. But my god, the gameplay. The gameplay was absolutely horrendous. In the first game, you would aim your camera at ghosts and the longer you stared at them, the more damage you did. There were also 'fatal frame' moves that acted like a parry, and if you shot your camera right as you were about to be hit you got essentially a critical hit. They COMPLETELY changed it in Fatal Frame 2, and severely downgraded it. The combat was now trying to be more complicated and totally failed, as now it was based more on the range. No matter how long you had your camera on an enemy, you had to get close to them. The problem was that unless you got a Fatal Frame shot, you simply didn't do damage. Even strong film against the weakest enemies didn't do much, and really made you want to just run past as many enemies as possible out of annoyance rather than fear or lack of resources. It is such a shame because really, this is a great game in every other way but the core gameplay is so bad that it doesn't make me want to return back to it. Great story, great graphics, horrendous gameplay. If this game had the same gameplay and camera mechanics as the first game, it would probably be one of my favorite games of all time and would bump it up to an eight or nine, maybe even a ten. Expand

This is one scary game. I refused to play it at night and even during the day there had to be someone else in the house. The ambience is bone chilling and the camera obscura is great choice for a weapon because you have to look directly at the ghost to kill it. The ending is very difficult, but that may be the only setback to an otherwise great game.

Only these particular spooks have a far bigger vocabualry than the typical "BOO!". Some are, little by little, telling you the twisted secrets behind the cursed villiage. The others... well... they would rather you be part of the story. Your objective: get out! To do so, you'll need the help a very special camera (hense the title), a flashlight that never cooperates, and countless ancient artifacts found around town. The only problem you may have is with combat (if you're looking for Devil May Cry/Resident Evil style fighting you will be sadly dissapointed) as well as the variety of "enemies". Bottom line: FF2 contains much less action and much more atmosphere than average survival/horror games. One of the most unsettling parts of this game was the fact that you have to return to certain areas that you've been to before, and there's something about going back and forth about the village that creates this feeling that few horror games have, because most horror games require you to go forward, and you never really have to worry about going back to a place unless you want to have another play through. It's that sort of feeling that makes you think, "Man, I don't want to go there. I hate that place!" and when a horror game is able to successfully make you feel that, then you know they got the job done. Most people say that that's a feeling of tediousness, but they're also the type that doesn't admit being uncomfortable, and this game has very few moments that lack unease. I've played this game many times before, back when I was way younger. It was one of my mom's favorite games and I used to help her with puzzles and fights. This was my first time finishing it solo.

Fatal Frame 2 is an amazing game and a nice improvement over its predecessor. From how it looks to how it plays, this should definitely be your first game in the franchise. The setting of the lost village is quite disturbing and the incredible sound design, weird voice acting and haunting (or sometimes beautiful!) soundtrack helps to create a sinister atmosphere from start to finish. It is undeniably unique in what it sets out to do.

The game is way less frustrating than its predecessor as well. They polished the combat a bit more, made movement a bit less stiff and gave you more room for improvisation, with a tiny bit of customization mixed in. Replayability is very much encouraged, as well. A step into the right direction, without a doubt.

One thing that I didn't like at all, however, was how Zero Shots/Fatal Frames work here. It made more sense in the first one. Now you have to get too close to the ghosts and the windows for the shots are quicker than they should be. Also, I'm glad that the game is more puzzle-light and less punishing than before, but did it need to be that easy?

And while the village and some VERY creepy places left quite an impact on me, I also feel like the mansion worked a bit better. Don't get me wrong, this game can get quite scary, but the first one did better, I guess. I blame that, especially, on the bad map design.

In fact, this may be the one true bad aspect of the game. Again, the scenarios are great and the game is hauntingly pretty, but when you're inside the houses, it all looks the same! It's easy to get lost, hard to know what to do, sometimes. And item placement is a bit iffy. Some crucial items to understand the story or tweak your camera can only be found by randomly interacting with everything, everywhere, with little indication.

And then there's the story... I'm not gonna lie, but the ending always brings me to tears. Both PS2 endings do, in fact. The story is a bit tricky to piece together at first, but when you're close to the end, it flows amazingly well. You understand what's going on and the writing makes everything seem dire, urgent and bloody. Mio and Mayu were also great simple protagonists. Their bond, Sae and Yae's ordeal and the village's wicked fate brings the story to a perfect conclusion.

I did not play the other Fatal Frames, but after this ending, it could all stop here and it would be perfect. Fatal Frame 2 is a fantastic overlooked survival horror game, with a unique approach to the genre's cliches and a lovely story.

I do hope the rerelease it, someday.

Probably my favorite of the Fatal Frame series. It's a fun time though it's slightly hampered by small issues and plenty of backtracking. I've definitely played through this game more than any of the others but it's definitely worth playing.

One of the greatest survival horror games of all time. The only minor complaint is a muddled story. But effects, pacing, fear factor, , atmosphere all off the charts.

Un clásico del horror que merece un remake, juego que todo amante de los juegos retro debe tener en su estantería. Nota al Pie: Nintendo libera el juego para que pueda ser republicado y hacer un remake!!!!

Creepy, but can feel like a fetch quest.

Good - more save points - the story is again fed in nice little bits, hinting and adding to the mysterious plot - the controls feel much smoother. Flat land to staircase transition feels fluent. The camera angle transitions are better - the hand on the shoulder scary part. - using sister as bait, then getting zero shot. Gameplay
Creepy, but can feel like a fetch quest.

    Good

    - more save points

    - the story is again fed in nice little bits, hinting and adding to the mysterious plot

    - the controls feel much smoother. Flat land to staircase transition feels fluent. The camera angle transitions are better

    - the hand on the shoulder scary part.

    - using sister as bait, then getting zero shot. Gameplay strategy. Having twin around and her having unlimited health is helpful.

    - character size 2 environments ratio is very imbalanced. This isn't a bad thing. The character is just really small, which gives me a lot of space to run from ghosts, which makes the battles very easy. Most of the ghosts were quite slow, and took a long time to reach me. It was still challenging to get zero shots, but never did I fear the risk of dying.

    - the images for each area in the map help a lot

    - glad I got to use the abilities this time around. First fatal frame didn't offer enough points for me to try much of them out, plus the limitation of the spirit orbs. I like FF2's ability design much more.

    - hearing voices of the dead through the radio added to the creepiness

    - enemies start picking up difficulty in chap 5

    - those sequences with the red butterflies on the backdrop of grainy black and white film style was Aerie

    - the children ghost fight was creepy, gave me goosebumps.

    - when I put the camera on mayu when she was trapped in the cell and it showed a circle over her, that was an indirect confirmation that she was a ghost. This was a clever way of telling the player

    - random objects move when navigating some areas, giving me a mini jump scare. Like doll falling off shelf after finding doll design plan

    - limiting stone mirror is a good idea

    - a lot of scary ghosts, like jumping woman, the ring, children. The lights out fights against the twins was scary too.

    - ending was sad.

    Bad

    - there's a lot of health items. Maybe too much.

    - majority of the ghosts are too passive. 90% of the fight I'm just standing in front of the ghost and waiting for zero shot. Maybe only had to move a few times. There was no risk of dying which took away a lot of the tension. Even if a battle were to go south I'd have more than enough healing items, to live ten times over. Sometimes the ghosts attack animation we're 10 times slower and their movements, which gave me ridiculous amount of time to just run out of the way. All of this made me feel like I was just running from 1 location to the next going through the plot, rather than being scared for of the next encounter. The survival horror element in fatal frame 2 is definitely weaker than fatal frame 1.

    - I do miss the character accumulation when targeting a ghost in ff1 which they took out on ff2

    - sequencing issue: after sister gets trapped I was told to go to Osaka house, but I searched the place top to bottom and found nothing. Turns out I had to talk to the white hair boy first before the pinwheel puzzle was triggered. This made no sense, since the protagonist already knows to go to the Osaka house and did examine the altar

    - although the twin ghosts were creepy to fight, they also felt a little unfair, since there was no way to discern which twin was the one that could take damage and which one couldn't. This made each fight a 50-50 chance of getting it right. They should have given even just a tiny indication which was the real twin

    - still no film swapping shortcut - chasing red kimono girl was too long. It transitioned from being scary to being annoying. - Some of the houses felt like a maze. So many rooms and hallways. It didn't help that they almost all look identical. It became hard to remember where certain things were, meaning I had to constantly bring up the map from the menu, which was annoying. A mini map in the corner would have helped a lot.

One of the better survival horror games i have played. The plot, all the little details, enemies, environment, how you go thought the village and try to understand what is happening, is an unique experience. The way the storytelling works, is so horrible and emotional, love it. Play this on a dark place, good sound and try to find a very silent place.

it has beautiful graphics and is very scary, To be worth 10, it only lacked a camera in 3rd or first person because the one in the game is horrible
(It only stays in first when using the camera )

Pretty much as close to a perfect horror game as you can get, don't get filtered by the slow paced gameplay. It's well worth the time and money

Exploring the lost village is a terrifying experience that's enhanced by a greatly improved graphics engine and a well-structured soundtrack. Tecmo's latest effort may be flawed and far from innovative, but it's still an enjoyably scary experience. [Feb 2004, p.114]
  2. Warning though, this one's not for kids (unless you don't mind them staying up all night, too scared to go to sleep).
  3. There’s not much innovation here — the gameplay is far too linear and there is too much emphasis on key searching to trigger the next cut scene — but for atmosphere alone it is hard to beat.
