Unfortunately, that didn't happen twice with the release of a tepid sequel in 2003. So for the third installment, the developers went back to what made the original so great. In the process, they also went back in the timeline and made a prequel instead. "Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening" recalls the original game's style of play and tells the story of the hero's rise to prominence. It's also one of the toughest games Capcom has ever made. DMC 3 is an extremely polished action-adventure that features crazy combat and over-the-top, kinetic cutscenes. This is one of the PS2's best action offerings but the extreme difficulty will not appeal to casual gamers. The game offers four different combat styles to choose from at the beginning of each level. As you progress, you'll be able to power up Dante in a variety of ways while additional weapons become available. It's worth noting that "Devil May Cry 3" is more comparable to the XBOX version of "Ninja Gaiden" than the original DMC. This is due to the emphasis on hyper tough fights, similar boss battles and an extensive arsenal of weaponry. It's not as good as "Ninja Gaiden", but DMC 3 is a much better game than part 2. I'd also recommend the Special Edition which features Dante's brother, Virgil, as a playable character. "Dante's Awakening" is arguably the best installment in the series. Expand

I miss the graphic finesse of the first game's architecture, in this one there's been a trade-off between character design and the environments design, leaving the latter often lacklustre and hollow. A welcome come for dante, this is easily the best in the series. Albeit as hard as your mother-in-laws facial hairs its very enjoyable when you manage to progress levels and the boss battles are so beautiful to play and watch for that matter. Its excellent but not too original and the annoying puzzles remain. Better than Ninja Gaiden as its more engaging.

Love the music and the story in this game. The combat was nice because it didn't feel like a hack and slash game. You actually need to be decent and have a good strategy sometimes against bosses or minion. The voice acting was spot on. Top slasher rpg game that I ever played.

Graphics look great, gameplay is solid, music is good, the replayability is there; the game does include some cheesy-ness though it just adds to the humor, it does not take away from the overall depth of the game. I was blindsided by the use of a guitar as a weapon, that was odd for me, all the same, the game is VERY fun to play and that is what is important.

Graphics are beautiful, with nicely detailed character models and a fantastic sense of scale in the level designs. Enemy designs are cool, but I actually liked the designs from the demo (Included with RE Outbreak 2nd file) more. As far as sound goes, the voiceacting is top notch, and the score is excellent, if a bit metal-heavy. I would have liked a little less metal and more emphasis on more gothic symphonic pieces, which also fit the series perfectly (see the main theme for evidence of this). If I can fault the sound category for anything, it's pretty heavy with Bruce Lee-esque yelps and shouts, which add unintended comedic value to scenes that were meant to be cool ;) Gameplay is tight and focused; with a nice array of moves and weapons to play with. The new on-the-fly weapon switching is fantastic, and gives true motivation to try for those huge combos (not to mention avoiding having to go into the menus, which annoyed me in this series' previous iterations). The other new addition, the Style system, is a good way to encourage multiple playthroughs to try out each one on a given level, but I often found myself wishing certain abilities were universal (wallrunning in particular). The story is appropriately cool, acted out in gorgeous cutscenes. And man, this game is HARD. This one is gonna be sitting in my PS2 for a while. All in all, DMC3 is as much a glorious return to the series' roots as it is an entirely new beast, and the melding of the two produces a game that is nothing short of sublimely awesome in it's presentation. The graphics, sound and cutscenes are top-notch, the controls are responsive, and hacking your way through endless demons is immensely fun for a few minutes, but theo whole thing gets far too difficult far too quickly, even on Easy mode. At least, that is for those of us who have an actual real life outside games. (Mike D, I'm talking to you here - there's this amazing place called "the outside world" that you should go sometime.) The difficulty comes partly from the hordes of enemies you'll face but also from Dante's pathetic resistance to damage (I mean come ON, he's part-demon, shouldn't that count for something?), the awkward camera angles, the unfair continue system that forces you to cough up significant amounts of game currency if you want to carry on from where you died, and the general "die and learn" ethos which means you'll frequently have to repeat a section again and again until (by skill or chance) you work out the right way to proceed. It all adds up to a fun but horribly frustrating experience for all but the most seasoned gamers. Rent first. Expand

At any rate, I think DMC3 is honestly THE action title of PS2 this year, and anyone with at least some experience with action games that require fast reflexes (fighting games are great for that) should immediately pick this up. Given that I usually played this in sessions of approximately 3-5 hours until it was completed on normal difficulty, my hands were often very tired afterwards. And although I died my share in the boss fights, I was never trying one boss more than three times until I passed it. And mind you, I usually play RPGs. :P So don't buy into all that crap about the game being too difficult to play or anything. The Game is certainly tough, but you are too... right? Expand

The controls are purposefully clunkier that other action games as it requires you to think before action and use more combos. (ie. You must always pay attention the the direction in which your character is facing-- a back analouge move may require a left analouge pull, etc.) Difficulty is somewhat unforgiving but in my opinion, I enjoy it as games are becoming more for the casual gamer. Bottom line, Go buy this game at all costs, just as long as you're ready for a hell of a challenge. Expand

Its the story of a younger Dante battling it out for humanity and his fathers power against his brother Vergil. It takes place in the tower of Temen-ni-gru. This is the tower that has seal the gate to hell and Sparda's power.

Each environment is fresh and unique. You'll venture to the top of the tower all the way to the bottom faces off against demons and bosses along the way.

Each boss will reward you with a new weapon that you can equip at the tart of the level. They changed up equipment in this game a bit so that you can have 2 slots equipped at a time, but can only switch when you start a new level, which i felt was a bit of a downfall from freely being able to switch from the menus but they give you two slots for devil arms and two slots for guns so its not that big of an issue.

Each weapon is completely unique to the last and changes your combat style completely. You'll get a pair of twin swords that talk to a guitar that shoots bats, you can use the weapons that fit you best.

All the bosses are completely original. You'll fight a horse and chariot to your doppelganger on your way to face off against your brother. You'll find the normal enemies challenging as well.

Overall this game ended up being perfect for me, there was an issue with some people with the original game due to the fact that the difficulty was not set correctly, but they rereleased a special edition with lowered difficulty that people can play. This is my favorite game in the series.

The combat has been improved with more weapons & combos for them, a new "Style" system that changes how you maneuver the environments or how your weapons work, and better targeting & improved camera system. I honestly never expected to beat it due to the hype about the difficulty. However, I was able to complete this game without much frustration. However, that is not to say that the difficulty was over hyped. Devil May Cry 3 is a very hard game. It requires mastery of all the mechanics in order for the player to succeed. Being able to complete the game without frustration is a true testament to how good this game actually is. Although there were levels that were borderline maddening, I never felt frustrated. I enjoyed the game so much that whenever I would die, it made me analyze my previous attempt at the level to try and figure out what went wrong. The times I died never felt cheap, and were not due to poor game design. They were because of me. I made errors. But Devil May Cry 3 is such a great game that it made me want to keep playing, no matter how many times I needed to try to beat a level. The combat is very smooth and fast paced, the graphics (for a ps2 game) were very good looking, and the story was deeper than in previous installments of the franchise. The Fun is back
Devil May Cry 3 fixes practically every issues Devil May Cry had..
This feels much more like the original devil may cry and all of the best ways..
Despite it being numbered 3, dantes awakening is actually a prequel story of brother vs brother,
And in this special edition you get to play as both
Dantes campaign taking around 9 hours to complete and Vergils campaign which runs parallel to dantes taking a little more than an hour and a half.
With this game they basically threw away devil may cry 2 and pretended it never happened… nothing is borrowed from that game at all…
This is practically a more polished devil may cry one, though in my opinion doesn’t quite take the crown as my favorite game in the series..
The combat is back to being fast and fluent, no more spongey enemies.. just slaying them and pulling of the best combo of moves you can in battle to collect red orbs to upgrade your weapons and buy consumable items..
Howevr for the first half of the game… its highly focused on just pure combat.. no demon transformation…
Though it does eventually come and much like the first game, the meter feels quickly, so you can use it freely.. making this game fun again
and new is a style option, your charcter can be more powerful with certain weapons or you can have the ability to roll out of the way during combat, you have to pick and choose which I appreciate being here but I would’ve preferred more having the ability to unlock it all and not have to choose..
The greatest improvements this game makes is in its bosses, I found these bosses to be the most challenging and the series and the coolest in the series.. I loved their designs,, though still the first games bosses are still my favorite.. but these are miles above devil may cry 2.. youll definitely have to use skill here to defeat these foes.. none though I found to be impossibly frustrating,, If I died I always felt I could get them the next time..
my biggest problem with this game though is its delivery…
This is more the style of the first game where youre in this giant building doing a lot of retrieving items and back tracking..
However this game is essentially 2 times the length of the first.. so back tracking here isn’t fun or cool..
it ultimately felt overwhelming to me.. especially when theres the big center room with multiple floors and doors and you cant remember which you’ve been through and when you finnaly get through and pick up and item you have no idea what this item is for or where the slot was that this item goes to to progress..
I was disappointed In how often I got impatient with the maze like aspect of this game just restoring to youtube to know where I should be going with the item I just picked up..
it’s a shame because this game is so polished compared to the others..
it just drops the ball when trying to be a longer version of the first game..
The adventure aspect worked the first time so well because the adventure was so compact and easy to remember.. it just doesn’t work here..
But still, in its own ways, devil may cry 3 is just as great of a game thanks to its more polished feeling combat, the fix of the perspective and lock on issues.
Devil May Cry 3 is definitely a cherry ontop of this trilogy and a sorry for devil may cry 2
I give Devil May Cry 3: Dantes Awakening Special Edition HD
    an 8/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Another treat from the Golden Age of gaming. This game was highly inspiring for me as a teen. I'm not big into hack 'n' slash games, but Dynasty/Samurai/Orochi/etc. Warriors and Devil May Cry games have always stuck with me ever since I first tried them. I consider them quite unique in the hack 'n' slash genre. The cutscenes in this game are also a delight. Now I'm the kind of person who has no problem with cutscenes and watches them every playthrough for a more complete experience, but this is the kind of game that makes cutscenes really a great thing. Another game with fantastic rewatchable cutscenes off the top of my head is Saints Row 2, which is a great comparison.

A decent story and some pretty good characters too. The best character of course being Dante himself, stealing the show every moment of the game. The worst character, however, is the female character Lady/Mary. Her constantly sticking her gun in Dante's face gets annoying and she also has the kind of grumpy personality no man would want to put up with, heh. I know she's supposed to have a burning stick up her ass, but it's executed in an annoying way. She does finally decide to ditch her tryhard tough girl routine and fold near the end of the game, which adds some redeeming femininity and cuteness, but it's too little too late.

This game is also very approachable. There are difficulty levels for everyone. And the automatic mode is a real treat, letting you have fun without having to make the button mashing complicated. If you're not into hack 'n' slash but are interested in this game, don't be afraid to give it a shot! You may just like this one. And hell, if not the gameplay, then the overall presentation, atmosphere and story might keep you coming back! Although the gameplay is really fun and the unlocks are sweet! Anyone remember how fun and satisfying unlocking things was?

This game introduced the crazy, stylish, combo-focused action DMC is known for nowadays, with the combo's that you're able to pull off delivering a very satisfying experience! Like the first two DMC games, this one has a kick-ass soundtrack, and with Shawn 'Shootie HG' McPherson's awesome vocals, these tracks are even better, especially the game's main theme "Devil's Never Cry"! This was also the first time we saw the really cheesy yet charming version of Dante, and the more iconic version of fan-favourite Vergil! Without a doubt, Devil May Cry 3 is the definition of a challenging yet entertaining game! Expand

DMC3 is also my most favor action game of all time - excellent design & character development, fun & deep combat engine, well executed story & plot. What not to love about this game?
I remember playing this over and over as a kid. I completely fell in love with the character of Dante that he is still till this day my favorite character in fiction.

This prequel in the series brought DMC back to its original form. Seeing a younger, cockier Dante was great. The soundtrack was and still is sick till this day.

This is one of best games ever made and easily the best redemptions of any franchise. The combat is super deep, story hits hard, and the music catchy as hell. Tons of replay value in this game

Good old fashioned Devil May Cry. DMC3 has gone back to its roots. Good gameplay, Good graphics for how old it is. I didn't really like the story that much though. A good solid entry to the series. Not like it's predecessor which was a absolute fail.

My testicles have been damaged after I was doing the Virgo boss battle and the camera spazm fullfilled my gothic dreams... also I wanna get a body pillow of Trish because she is the only woman in my gothic life that I can obtain. Excellent narrative and combat. One of the best DMC games. Dante is an amazing character and at his best here. Flaws come from some frustrating levels and enemies later in the game.

Devil May Cry 3 crafts one of the best combat systems in the history of Action games with a weapon selection that while not particularly big, provides exceptional variety thanks to its weapons offering incredibly distinct, solid balanced movesets to unlock, upgrade and master branching out to different playstyles. This variety is further expanded upon through Styles, a new mechanic that allows every player to find their own unique strategy through additional power-ups and special abilities, which can be expanded as well. All of this blends together to form an exceptionally layered, beautifully variegated playground. To help this combat system shine and express its potential, there is great enemy variety and monsters generally offer a much more thrilling challenge than previous titles, even if a couple of them have annoyingly confusing attack patterns. Likewise, the quality of bossfights is mixed, with some being overly simplistic and others uniquely engaging with shifing movesets and diverse mechanics, but they're always fair and rewarding. The camera, although greatly improved, still struggles a little too often to keep the focus on the action. Most notably, as amazing as combat is, it really is the only great thing that this game has to offer: its level design, although greatly improved from the previous games with more platform challenges and a more interconnected map structure that sporadically challenges the player's memory or orientation, offers nothing truly significant. The story, lastly, is where Devil May Cry finally finds its true identity, fully embracing an endearingly flamboyant love for exaggerated, cheesy over the top action, without disregarding more heartfelt, dramatic moments.

más difícil, mejores boses, la mejor historia de los 3, mejores personajes, mejor gameplay, que tiene de malo esta obra maestra? la cámara? puede ser, no lo se, esto es sin duda la cúspide del hack and slash.

Puzzles and level design get a massive upgrade from the original two entries, as the game always rewards you for checking every nook and cranny, and with beautiful set designs, it's absolutely no wonder why this game is so praised for it. The story is brimming with charm, bringing the player nothing but entertaining, tongue-in-cheek action that'll have you giggling from absurdity and perfectly executed melodrama. With a beautiful balancing act of all elements like this, there's nowhere to go but up from this installment. Expand

  1. A dark mix of revealing narrative and gun-toting, sword-swinging, demon slaying action that works well with a result that's certainly satisfying.
  2. Although there have been many games in this mold, Devil May Cry 3 sets itself apart from others by incorporating fighting styles to keep this game fresh, instead of just repetitive.
  3. Well, we hate to say it, but DMC3 is still no "Devil May Cry." The world has moved on, folks, and a lot of that game's sheen is now standard issue in gaming. [PSW]
