    Nowadays it's pretty rare you come across a game that's nothing like you've seen before. Something that brings new ideas, new mechanics, new genius to the table, and gives you a quick glimpse at how pristine the indie scene can really be when you give it a chance. With a gaming market chuck-full of trash carbon-copies of one dull idea to the next, Zenge really stood out to me, even though it does technically follow the "sleek minimalist indie puzzle game" craze, which has been continuing to grow for the last few years. I play these types of games all the time, they're almost all the same as far as presentation goes, but they almost all have their own tiny mechanic that they play off of, and some--like Zenge--have geniuses behind them. The creativity in Zenge's puzzles left a huge smile across my face multiple times, the moment I realized the genius behind what had to be done to solve each individual puzzle. The mechanics start extremely simple and for the first half of the game I was telling myself it's just too easy a game, and honestly it could use some sort of difficulty curve. But once I got to the end the levels picked up and constantly introduced new mechanics and tools to make the very simple under-lying ideas much more complex. The telling of a nice picture story throughout the game was also a nice touch, with cute characters and strange, unexplained phenomenons, it leaves a lot up to the interpretation of the player; the story seemingly as abstract as the puzzles.

    There really isn't anything Zenge could have done better other than the difficulty of the puzzles. They got plenty hard at the end but seemed to lack incorrect responses too often, meaning if you just moved around what you saw, you would complete the puzzle with ease. But the reason I don't mind this when I normally would, especially in a strictly puzzle-oriented game, is because the ideas and mechanics Zenge puts forth are incredible to experience and see in motion, despite a lack of challenge. And since I can't find any real problems with Zenge other than the difficulty, I have to give it a near-perfect score. Is it my favorite puzzle game of all time? No. Is it in my top 5? Probably not. But for mere pocket change, Zenge will seriously open your mind and show you how smart puzzlers can really be, and hopefully restore a bit of your hope for the puzzle scene if you've been loathing the recent onslaught of rip offs and tired concepts.    … Full Review »
