Yu-gi-oh! (YGO) Duel Links is an adaptation of the popular trading card game of the same name, designed with mobile devices in mind, but ported over to the PC (with cross-platform play enabled). Instead of the regular YGO format, the game uses a simplified one, more preferable for mobile devices, called "speed dueling" with a smaller play area (for example, 3 spots to place your monster cards instead of 5), reduced health total and smaller deck size (20 instead of 40). This leads to duels that often end very quickly, between 1 and 3 turns usually (this is not unusual for the physical game too). Further more, every player is represented by a certain character from the YGO anime, refered to as "Legendary Duelists" in the game, who each possess abilities that you can use in-game, such as starting with a higher health pool, playing a certain card at the start of the duel and so on. These changes make it very friendly with small times to spare, as Hearthstone (and especially MtG games if Arena makes it to mobile) take significantly longer to close out matches, while in Duel Links it's very quick.

The way this game (along with, well, being YGO) makes itself stand out is play modes and events. Instead of only being able to play against people and awful bots, the game features a massive Single-player focused side of gameplay, where you duel AI opponents with a large variety of decks (which improve as you level-up your account). These duelists can be random characters or iconic characters from the anime, and playing against them gives you resources that you use to get cards, such as gold and materials (for crafting, refered to as "card trading" in the game), keys to duel specific legendary duelists for their cards (for instance, dueling Yugi gives you a chance to get Dark Magician as a reward). You can sink dozens of hours into the game just dueling AI opponents, since once they start being high level, they field strong decks and know how to use them often optimally, which can make them a challenge at best, and a good time-sink at worst. You can also duel versus them automatically, to speed up the grind.

There's always a number of events going on, that allow you to speed up progression and unlock exclusive rewards in the meantime, like getting special cards, otherwise unobtainable playable characters, card sleeves and mats, and so on. This is an incentive to keep you logging in at least every once in a while to see what event is running, and to see if the rewards interest you.

The important question is whether or not you can be competitive without paying. The answer is yes, you can. When you start off, you'll get rewarded with a bunch of gems (the f2p currency in the game), with which you can obtain a lot of packs. However, it's easy to burn through them on packs you don't need, so it's highly reccomended to look up budget decks to be competitive early, unless you're a YGO fan going in and already know what you want to play ("I'm for sure playing a Blue-Eyes deck" and such). If one wants to push high spots in ranked, shelling out will become a requirement, since new cards come out all the time, and you often will want to stock up on them to be able to use the new strong decks first.

Overall, It's an easy game to recommend for people who already like YGO, but it's also good for those who want a game to sink a few minutes or hours into every once in a while to pass time, since there's always new things to get, new events to see, and playing versus AI takes off a lot of the pressure associated with card games, while still getting good rewards out of it (for instance Hearthstone, where going on a losing streak hampers your gold acquisition considerably)

With its 3rd anniversary event underway (at the time of writing this review,) once again bringing me back to Duel Links, I figured it's about time to write my opinion on it.

Be warned though, I've been playing, watching and reading Yu-Gi-Oh! since childhood, so I may be somewhat biased. What it is you can clearly see, a Yu-Gi-Oh Collectible Card Game (I'd say Trading, but in this game, weirdly there is no option to actually trade cards,) what's different about it though is its ruleset. Duel Links takes some cues from anime and makes everything faster and more compact. There's less space for cards on the field, fewer cards in a deck, and fewer life points. And it's actually good! Not only its more comprehensive, which is great for newcomers but also the randomness is greatly reduced, promoting strategic deck building. It might surprise you but despite it being PC port of a free-to-play mobile game, from Konami no less (though Konami is infamous for a different reason,) it's actually good in both business model and quality. The pricing of card packs and decks is fair (basically the same as their real-life counterparts with some limited, cheaper options,) and the game is very generous with its premium currency. Between plentiful events, various login bonuses and daily challenges, unlocking and leveling up your characters, and of course, simply playing the game, not only you'll have more than enough to do even if you completely ignore the competitive PvP element as I did, you'll also be constantly rewarded for doing all those things with new cards and gems to spend on even more cards to play around with. Which there's plenty of and even more are waiting to come, with the game adding new cards periodically, and at the moment in its 3rd anniversary having content from only 3 out of 6 main series (and 7th coming soon.) Of course, even though the PC port has some improvements, mainly in the interface which resulted from not being limited to a small vertical screen anymore, it's not a perfect game. Lack of full steam integration is one of the annoyances, forcing you to do a couple of additional steps in the game client, like making a separate account, looking for and adding your friends on that account's friend list. It's not that bad, but it's more bothersome than it should've been. On the other hand, one big fault of the game is that you lack the ability to share your account between the mobile and steam versions. In my opinion, if you could do that, it would be a great asset to the game, but as it is, if you start playing either on mobile or PC, you're stuck with that version (unless you don't mind starting over.) But other than that, Duel Links is great! I wholly recommend whether you are already a fan or want to try out YuGiOh.

I love Yu-Gi-Oh. Watched it in my childhood days a lot. Then GX came along and I was too old to care, but I still look back fondly on the first incantation of the show. Also love the Little Kuriboh Abridged Series, which I've been watching for 15 years now. Then comes Duel Links. A game that could have been a masterpiece. But it's not. It's far from it. The game is a grindy pay to win mess, which actually hurts my soul deeply. Sure some people might defend this game with "you can get everything through gems, just grind grind grind". But it stops being fun and instead becomes a chore when you have to do sh*** duels with AI over and over again to afford some worthwhile cards. Playing against other players was fun and the only thing that kept me so long in this game. I can see from a mile how this game was made to suck you in so you can become an addict and spend real money on this s***. I didn't do it as I still have my brain cells intact. But from what I saw, most of the players I played against... fell into the trap of corporate machine and sold their souls to Konami. This game is a wasted potential. It's a good game that is poisoned with cancerous anticonsument practices which makes it basically unplayable after a while. Avoid this germ. Play Yu-gi-oh Power of Chaos games instead.
