Game is fun but drags on too long. Definitely better than playing the original on the ps1 its the definitive way to play for sure. But at the same time I just wish they added a bit more to the combat system or innovated in some way. I feel like any steps taken with this one were taken backwards

When you start with Yakuza 0 there's no going back, u must play all of them! That deep story, that combat system, those side missions, everything is just pure gold. Leave it to the Japanese to create action game masterpieces.

Although it's a downgrade from Yakuza 0, I have still enjoyed putting my time into this game. It's understandable why it feels like being like a half of Yakuza 0, the prequel was it's one stand-alone game and this is a remake of a old PS2 game. But even with this compromise, there are more downsides while being compared with 0, for example, some combo tweaks. For some reason, they decided to have every single major enemy be a evasion god and not care about taking hits. You are expected to be rewarded for finding an opening and hitting the enemy, but instead the enemy just doesn't care about you hitting him and just starts his own attack. Yakuza 0 had this mechanic only when it was a part of a certain enemy, some tough guys and SOME of the bosses and even with that they were glowing white showing you that will brute-force attack you no matter what, but in Kiwami almost every single boss or major enemy does this with no indication what so ever. With that out of the way, I can say that I greatly enjoyed the story of Kiwami 1. It had a lot of unexpected twists and playing the prequel just added to the feeling of being attached to the characters of the game. Substories evolved too, some even having their own full cutscenes and big ties to the main story. Majima Everywhere was a perfect addition to the game, giving you a great dose of comedy and good fight every so often. In the end, a great game, can be improved. Recommend playing the prequel before this. Expand

Coming from Yakuza 0, this game is still really good and totally worth it. The combat is much more refined and feels much better than in 0. The only thing I didn't like about this game was the bosses. They all just do the same 2 or 3 moves as you slowly wear them down for 15 minutes and it's agony. Other than that this game still has those wacky sub stories, gripping story, and fun combat.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Remake of the first Yakuza on the Yakuza 0 engine. It is an action JRPG. Those who like Japanese culture will tie themselves up and those who don't know it will probably be curious, research and get information.

Yakuza's story is better than I expected. There are some twists, some exciting moments, heavy moments and a little bit of character development. But I do not recommend playing this as your first Yakuza, I recommend Yakuza 0 because the beginning of Yakuza Kiwami is very difficult, its presentation is one of the weakest aspects in the narrative aspect. The game starts lightly but in the first one and a half hours of play there is a heavy event that generates unexpected consequences. The relationships of the characters are not well established and neither are they, there is a twist right away. There are some chapters of the campaign that look like sidequests (about 2 or 3), focusing on 'random' characters that neither appear after or barely appear. Apart from some (few) missions that are simply going out to buy things, very annoying. Another thing I missed was a more tense and 'badass' climax, as in Yakuza 0 (where the climax is really good). Nishiki's story is good, but the resolution of her climax I found lazy, they just killed the guy and **** up his whole development. The story ends well, I just found it a little too tragic. There is a feeling of closure closing all loose ends, it doesn't even seem like there are 5 more games after ...

The gameplay is cool but definitely not my favorite. The combat has a decent depth but a lot of it is behind the skill tree system, the problem is that it takes too long to unlock them all (and you will probably focus on the skils that give you heat moves, life and damage, neglecting the new moves just because be as good as the other improvements and much less necessary to advance, leaving the combat with little depth. The game is full of relaxed minigames, I think it's cool, there are those who love and there are those who **** (but I think they should give some kind of reward) extra, plus money as it normally is).

The gameplay mechanics of Majima Everywhere, where you fight against him to gain his strength back. In fact the whole system of skills in this game is very good. I just thought that it takes too long to unlock Dragon Style skills and if you don’t farm it probably becomes obsolete. Especially since without the Dragon style upgrades he is a worse Brawler.

There's a lot of reused Yakuza 0 (from the franchise in general), it's absurd. Gameplay, engine, character models, mechanics, maps and items. I imagine that this will continue for the rest of the series.

The game has a lot of secondary content, having several sidequests.

Soundtrack is decent but has little variety. The opening is very good.

You can of course buy better equipment with them, but if you do sidequests you will have even better equipment that you can buy with achievement points. Just because of the frequent fights with Majima lost tension in the story moments associated with it + fighting style dragon, which is pumped after fights with Majima felt redundant and strained, unless of course you're not going to fight him 100 times to pump all branch abilities. Also the main story seemed to me less interesting than in yakuza 0, but because of the total duration of the game is something like 2 times less than in zero part, it is not too stressful (although even with such a duration there are moments for the apparent lengthening of the game). But even with all the shortcomings the game feels soulful and you really care about the characters. Expand

This game is pretty good, very grindy, and some really nice fighting mechanics, and I really enjoyed the story, especially with Kiryu being the badass that he is, and yet so kind. The only real issue that I had with this game, is that the incidents that you run into the gangs, yakuza, and some others, can get pretty repetetive, but overall, a very well done game.
