This is easily one of the best and most satisfying games to play through.
Even the humour is top-notch (not something you'd expect from this kind of game at first glance, I certainly didn't).

This game is amazing from start to finish. The only problem I have is the writing feels a bit too "Japanese" sometimes. I'm happy to give this game a 9. A must play for Yakuza fans, and even for newcomers

I'm not kidding when I say that this is the best game that I've ever played. It had probably been around 15 years since I put over sixty hours into a game, but every facet of this drew me in. I think about 80% of that was on the mini games alone, but yes...get this game. It's well worth it.

I'd heard about the series, but as I hadn't owned a Playstation since PS2, never played it.
Picked it up on my PC as it was bluntly "cheap" - and have been completely won over.

So the game. It's not a Japanese GTA - which is how the games are sometimes pitched.
World is pretty small, but lovingly detailed - but not 'open world'
I think of it as a game-pulp-novella. Strongest point of the game is the story. Think of it like a great TV show with a great story - and amidst the main plot, you get to play about with a load of games and a load of really entertaining side-missions.
Why I enjoyed this game though was the feeling of place it has. I know it's called 'Yakuza' - but you're going to feel like you know them a bit more at the end.
Why I *REALLY* enjoyed the game was the variety of stories - the big bold set-pieces, full-on-melodrama (full on "MENDOZZZA!!!") to the silly stuff that makes you laugh out loud.
Of special mention as well is the great localization - audio is in full japanese, but really great subtitles ("you really **** the bed" - suspect isn't a japanese phrase for example, but you get the sentiment).
Trying to work out how to sell the game, the best I could come up with was the TV show "The Wire".
Each chapter has a proper plot, but so many asides you think are just for diversion, but realize actually are there to also make you care about the characters.

Единственный минус для русскоязычного игрока - это наличие только японской и английской локализаций. Английский тут не такой уж простой, поэтому при слабом владении лучше даже не пытаться. Но перевод на русский вроде как на подходе.

A better game in this genre is really hard to imagine. It has all that could possibly engage a potential gamer: brilliant plot, cool characters, a whole lot of thoroughly designed mini-games, almost every one of which could possibly become a stand-alone simulator game. You can always do some stuff in this game, but at the same time you can as well just run forward through the story, skipping all the side quests and entertainment stuff. I doubt that it would be worth it, though.

Gameplay- Flashy to begin with but gets pretty dull near the end with very little enemy variety to spice the game up. The leveling system is this jumbled mess and tasks to acquire more skills are painfully boring and long. The game also tends to be way too easy even on higher difficulties with the only section particularly difficult being the final chapter due to an unfair amount of hard to dodge gun enemies.

Substories - Substories are built on charming ideas but are dragged out into this boring husk with very little gameplay to save them.

Minigames - Minigames are pretty underdeveloped side things but they are more there to be gimmicks and give a few giggles.

When I first saw it on STEAM, the store page game me the idea it would have been kind of like Grand Theft auto, only with Yakuza. And it's not really the case at all.

For me, Yakuza 0 really feels like a visual novels with some sparse moments inbetween where you can walk around, get in fights, that sort of thing, but the game was never deep enough or interactive enough to be able to really capture my attention all that much. It feels more like a Grand Theft Auto Super Lite.

The city map isn't all that big and the things you have access to are few and far between, there are very few times that you are really given the chance to actually make any sort of decisions and when you do, it never feels like it has any real sort of impact.

The game boasts that it is "open world", but I disagree completely with that sentiment. The game likes to give you the illusion of an open world, but you are actually railroaded into a very specific story with a very specific plot. There isn't much variation in it and even if you do somehow manage to stray a bit away from the beaten path, they still manage to drag you back in to what they invisioned.

Another aspect that I found fairly annoying is that this game is rated "M" for mature for Blood, Intense Violence, Sexual Content, Strong Language, Use of Alcohol. It's pretty ironic that Yakuza 0 managed to get a "M" rating and actually fail to deliver on almost any of these aspects.

If you are going to be a "M" rated game, then you should own it. Yakuza 0 actually goes out of it's way to constantly avoid showing any sort of graphic violence. The blood shown in the game is fairly tame by almost all standards, the "intense violence" is PG-13 at best, use of alcohol is some dudes drinking beers and as far as sexual content goes? If you consider lingerie that literally covers everything then you are a pearl pearl clutching prude. Sure, they say the "Eff" word, but so does everone at my job.

Long story short, Yakuza 0 fails to deliver on almost every aspect advertised.

Everything about the game (graphics, music, gameplay, story, characters) is incredibly cohesive. The beat em’ up aspect is satisfying, the music is fantastic, and the side quests, characters, and story are too well written and fleshed out: it really does an amazing job of building this world and making you feel a part of it. But the one thing that stands above the rest is just how damn silly, funny, and ridiculous Yakuza 0 is; it’s enough to make your head spin and keep you in laughter throughout the entire thing.

One complaint that I had is that a few of the mechanics of the game are not explained or unintuitive, and so you’ll more than likely to have to look it up to get a better answer. My other criticism is the camera can be a royal pain in the butt to deal with and is especially problematic during combat.

Yakuza 0 is, simply put, a spectacular game. Despite its small flaws, I had an absolute blast with it and I highly recommend everyone to experience this crazy, wild ride.

The story is amazing, the game is bonkers to the wall with the machismo and does not give a f**k how ridiculous it can get, I mean, the trailer shows a guy in a motorcycle without a shirt inside a sewer: how did he get there? does not matter, it is just awesome and that what matters, i found myself liking a lot of the characters especially the main ones, which was the most important part.
I find incredible how easily this game went from serious to stupid and not feel like a mess, it is a marvel to behold.
The fighting is the downside of the game, just because everything else is so good, it will take some time, and upgrades, to get used to but eventually you will get it, but it could be better, a lot of fights feel cheap or bust.
The main music, the karaoke music, they stay in my head and I keep listening to them over and over.

This is how you make a prequel.

Yakuza 0 is without a doubt one of the best games in the series, and it is quite obvious that RGG Studio knew what they needed to do, to make this game the amazing prequel that it is.

Certainly, it is the best entry point for anyone wanting to get into the franchise, and this is the way I did it, years ago, when this game came to the PC.

But the interesting thing about Yakuza Zero here is the fact that…once you’ve played the whole series, going back to Zero…is even more amazing compared to the first time. At least…this is the case for me, because then we can appreciate the huge amount of care and attention to detail put into this game, with so many little details and bits here and there referencing things that we get to learn, to some extent, in the following games.

Replaying this game is quite nice, and since I didn’t have a review posted here for this one (I thought I had) well, I just replayed it recently and this is a good time. This game is top epic quality from start to finish, of that there’s no doubt.

Performance wise, this is a decent port here on the PC, it has some minor caveats here and there, but nothing that a quick visit to PCGamingwiki can’t fix, and other than those small quirks, the game runs pretty nice on the PC.

I originally played this game on my old i5 4690K and GTX 1070 machine, and it ran quite fine at 1080p with some Super Sampling on top too, enough to do 60 FPS at all times.

Currently, on my Ryzen 5 3600 and RTX 3060 Ti, I have played at 1620p DLDSR and with SSAAx4 on top, so that’s a lot of resolution, and still able to keep locked 60 FPS at all times.

What amazed me the most the very first time I played, back in the day, were the incredibly detailed character models, especially in the cinematics (there’s a mod on PC to switch the in game models with the slightly higher versions used in cinematics, which I used and works great) and their facial expressions, animations and skin quality / textures and their eyes…are just insanely well done for a game not precisely sporting the latest state of the art tech when it comes to engine and stuff like that.

It’s a testament of RGG Studio’s skill when making these types of games, they know how to do it well.

And the music…well, this franchise has amazing tracks, and Yakuza 0 has some memorable tracks, for sure.

The voice acting is incredible, one of the best I’ve seen and you can feel that the actors had a blast when working on this game.

Gameplay is pretty fun and enjoyable, it never gets old with all the style switching and great amount of different heat actions available, and yeah...feeling the weight of each hit on the controller when it vibrates enhances the experience. Good combat doesn't need to be overly complex, and I think this game strikes a good balance, and I'll never get tired of punching thugs in a game like this, it's just very fun.

All in all…Yakuza 0 is one hell of a start for the series so if you’re one of the lucky people out there who’s yet to experience the series…congratulations, the journey is one to cherish forever, enjoy. This is a great game, from an amazing franchise.

As someone who hasn't touched any Yakuza entries before Y0, I had an absolute blast. And if you ever feel like the story is too much, Yakuza 0 is jam-packed with side stuff to do: from karaoke to bowling to owning your own real estate business, there is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy. Not all content is absolutely amazing and the side stories vary somewhat in quality, but most of it turned out to be a lot of fun.

However, it is important to note that Yakuza is an extremely Japanese experience. You will stumble upon foreign honorifics, places and references a lot, and on top of it all the game has Japanese dubs only. The localisation has been done extremely well and is one of the best I've ever experienced, but if any of that is a problem for you, you might want to look away.

Yakuza 0 is a great way to begin experiencing the vast world of the series, so if you've ever wanted to kick some yakuza ass, I implore you to give this series a shot!

I cannot give this game enough praise. It's the first of the Yakuza games I played, and it certainly will not be the last. Holy crap. Yea, it's a prequel, so there were several references and the like that went over my head, lots of fan service - especially end game stuff - that meant nothing to me, but I thought it'd be fun to start at the very beginning. I also know that the early gamesI cannot give this game enough praise. I also know that the early games have far less in them overall. That this one was likely riding a high for the series, coming off their highest rated game, really shows as they went all out for it. To the point where if I had any complaints about the game, it would be that there is simply too much to do. The game can get a bit checklisty. And I didn't really find all the minigames to be very fun. In fact, I still haven't completed several.

That said, this game absolutely blew me away. The story was engaging, with plenty of twists and turns. The performances in the voice acting (and motion capture) were second to none - though as a note it only has Japanese voices in the game, no English. The gameplay is fantastic. Don't think of this as being Grand Theft Auto: Japan, as it's far closer to "Shenmue done right". The influences there are stark. One thing that I think truly helps this game is that it keeps the play area fairly small. Your maps are only a few neighborhoods, but they are absolutely crammed with things to do. It makes the setting feel far more alive.

If you have a chance to play this game, get ready for a lengthy investment. But it is absolutely worth it.

Most of the micromanagement minigames were not my cup of tea either, the elaborate systems in place for this could have been used for a larger amount of open world or more in depth side skits. It was pretty much straight story and side skits that kept my interest. There is a LOT of dialogue that if you are not interested in reading all of it, will be a pain to keep hitting the skip button, it just goes on and on and on in some cases. Use a gamepad. I got a couple of crashes that lost me a couple hours of gameplay each time so make sure you manually save after a few events, there is no auto save!!! And you have to remember which is your latest save when starting back up, the game DOES NOT automatically display your most recent save, ugh. This surprisingly takes up a bit of horsepower on my rtx 2060 laptop so it's not a well optimized game either. All in all it's a fantastic game for such a low price but has a lot of little annoyances that hinder it. I'm not sure that I want to continue the yakuza series since this is supposed to be the best one and I'm not hungry for more of the same. Expand

It is really intersting to see Kiryu and Majima grow as people, how there attittudes and mannerisms change as we go through the story.

The way that is achieved is by throwing out most garbage ideas like copy-pasted busywork and instead making optional content either extremely well written, hilarious side stories, or equally amusing minigames, some of which have enough depth to where they could easily be adapted into completely separate videogames with a bit of effort.
Yakuza 0 makes Witcher 3 look like a desert with an unexciting plot and scarce, low effort sidequests.

+ Extremely dense, compact open world with things to do in every corner
+ Very well written serious main story
+ Amazing quality side-activities with no copy-pasting aside from (optional) random combat encounters and absolutely hilarious writing (and a lot of it)
    + Flawless PC port

    - Mediocre combat that is only bearable thanks to the variety in the player's moveset

This game is a Japanese game through and through. It plays out like an Opera. Cutscenes are long, the story requires precise attention, the plot thickens and forms a web of knowledge you need to keep track of, and it puts every emotion in your body to the test.
I won't lie, as a big fan of Shenmue, I thought I'd like this off the bat. Its been a long time since Dreamcast though, and I found myself complaining right away. "The menu looks so old. The graphics are arcadey, the world isn't big, there's no save point." I whined and complained.
But I played the game, and shortly after, I hit an epiphany. I realized that this game isn't western, and it was my fault for seeing it the way I was seeing it. At this point I dove in headfirst into the culture of 1980s Japan, and embraced it's most wild and serious tropes. I came out of it signed up for a class on how to speak Japanese.
Now that the intro is out of the way, let me get to the game.
I cried 3 times during this game. One of those times resulting in tissues. This never happens to me. I felt anger, joy, laughter, pain, sadness, betrayal, shock, anticipation, throughout the whole game. I felt like the streets were my home. Convenience store clerks became friends, businesses developed became important, defeating Mr. Shakedown became a goal. No, this world is not flat, and no, it's not GTA-level "Open world".
It doesn't need to be. Quality over quantity. For such a small map, it rarely ever felt like I was in the same place twice. I never got sick of it. I browsed stores, activities, built relationships, ate food, and explored not as the protagonist but also as a virtual tourist.
Pretty soon, I began to fall in love with the graphics, and the attention to detail that brings the city to life exceeds my awe. I was enveloped in the world of Yakuza 0.
The voice acting is some of the best I have ever heard. Characters have personalities that are compounded because of their voices.
I can't say enough of this game. Just do me a favor, don't be the person that dislikes this game because it's different, instead, change your viewpoint and embrace the strange. This game is better than any western RPG available.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Generally a very fun game. As a "Yakuza" fan, it was exciting to see appears of characters from the series. The story was well-written, although there were some Japanese cliches in the story. (not being able to save a character because you are late, or as seen in the other games, getting shot only because of dropping your guards and your gun down) That did not bother me too much as I just accepted the fact that it is a part of the culture and a form of art. The side missions were very enjoyable to me as well.
However, the presentation of the story was kind of annoying for me. There were voiced cutscenes, non-voiced scenes, and voiced comic-book-style panels. This was more cheap than artistic to me. I felt like that was done only to cut the budget down. It did not serve any purpose, at least not that I could notice.

Such a funny and unique game. You will have a lot of fun exploring the world. The slot cars and other mini games, Omg they are so fun! There is an arcade with ports of old sega games! Just play the game and enjoy the wacky adventure.

Best game I've ever played in my entire life. Basically best storyline ever. And don't forget, the combat mechanic is also great. The animation and the moves are incredible. Moreover, the soundtrack is fire.

I found the gameplay to be lacking. The combat is fun but has little depth, and after a while, it felt a bit repetitive. The soundtrack is not at all memorable, and I disliked much of the side content. Nonetheless, I liked the plot, and was mostly what kept me interested throughout.

With epic and long cutscenes, good characters, great music, pretty good gameplay for each character and weird substories, Yakuza 0 is beautiful and stupid at the same time, and I love it. One of the minuses for me was the fact that cutscenes in substories were text-based, but it was adding to the comedic tone, so it was no big deal. Expand

Yakuza 0 is GOOD. With a story that doesn't miss, characters that sets your heart on fire, and that gameplay that makes it feel like a YAKUZA game. An amazing gateway to the franchise, it seems.

I was not expecting to like this game as much as I did. Top tier atmosphere from 80s Japan, very enjoyable and well executed story, fun combat, decent post game. Good game but I kinda don't like how you need money to upgrade. Good combat, and I like the 80s vibes. And 30 hours of story? pretty good.

The Gameplay is super fun, the combat is pretty satisfying there are some heat moves that are basically in game cutscene of the protagonist doing a cool move straight of some action movies. And if you get bored of that ever, there are a lot of activities you can do and it some of them reminded me of flash player games on the Internet, you can play arcade, you can play hot wheels, you can **** make up girls, karaoke a whole lot of **** it s one of the densest open world in a game. Also the soundtrack is really really remarkably good Expand

One of the best game i've ever played by far. This game provides you a huge amount of content. The combat is **** amazing, there are a lot of minigames(some of them are bit irritating tho) and substories. Storyline is a pure masterpiece. Characters are catchy, everyone has it's own motivation and goal. I'm looking forward to play the other Yakuza series games. I give this game 10 out of 10.

If you have never played a Yakuza game, Yakuza 0 makes for the perfect entry point. It introduces a host of wacky characters and starts the journey of Kiryu that certainly doesn’t end here. Beyond that, though, Yakuza 0 is just a damn good game, and that’s rad.

I’ve steered clear of Japanese games since I figured out long ago they’re not my cup of tea. But Yakuza is something else. It was my first contact with the series and although at first I did mind the fact that it trails behind Western competition in many aspects, I quickly ceased to notice it. I know it’s an overused cliché, but damn, Yakuza has a soul! And an exceptional story, one of the best I’ve experienced in games since I started playing them almost thirty years ago. Even if you avoid Japanese games, do yourself a favour and give Yakuza 0 a chance, because it is ridiculously fun and you need to experience it too. [10/2018, p.69]
