Xenopurge is a solid, tense, tight experience that manages to walk the fine line between challenging and frustrating without stumbling. The game is at its best during the final sector mission, when players have to achieve three difficult objectives but can also rely on the abilities of their equipped and upgraded squad. The graphics aren’t complex, but, alongside the solid sound design, they create atmosphere even as the narrative moves through some familiar moments. Finding the path through the nodes that boosts a tactical approach is fun. Xenopurge is adept at creating tension and dread, while constantly giving players new objectives to aim for.

Xenopurge's central concept is a brilliant spin on the auto-battler format. While its story is a bit awkwardly implemented, there's no doubting the excellent atmosphere the gameplay generates.

Xenopurge is an auto-battler that is well worth picking up and playing. It captures the tense feeling of trying to keep a squad alive as they carry out their mission, while the odds get increasingly worse the longer they are exposed. If you love the vibe of the Alien franchise, and want to try and command squads on runs to fight back against an alien threat, then Xenopurge should be on your list.

Ultimately, Xenopurge will be polarizing. To some, the tactical, hands-off gameplay will be fun and enhanced by the immersive display. To others, the atmospheric approach won’t be enough to sell mechanics that aren’t incredibly engaging. The right game for the right audience, it’s worth keeping an eye on as development continues.
