Wreckfest 2 is, at this moment, a promising Early Access release. It’s already a blast to play and offers everything fans of combat racing could ask for – other than, you know, structure and a career mode. Still, there’s already a worthwhile amount of content, including a truly bonkers derby arena full of ramps, loops, and giant metal traps that crush cars like grapes. It’s always a risk engaging with something in Early Access, as there’s a chance that promised features will never materialize. That said, there’s already a lot to love, and for players who long to see a Volkswagen Bug car disintegrate into component parts as it’s rammed head-on by a school bus going 80, Wreckfest 2 certainly has the goods. [Early Access Score - 65]

Bug Bear Studios is back with even more detailed crashes and destructive driving, but it may have jumped the gun a little early. [Early Access Review]

As a huge fan of developer Bugbear since the original FlatOut in 2004, Wreckfest 2 is definitely already speaking my language – and it really does feel great when you’re in the thick of it, crashing and carving your way through rival cars and destructible scenery on a scale I’ve never seen before. The slim amount of content and abundant crashes to desktop in the early access launch, however, make Wreckfest 2 in its current form more of an investment in what’s to come than an imperative you should change course to experience today. It leaves a mark on first impact, but a few sessions later and I feel like I’ve squeezed all the fun I’m going to glean out of it for now. [Early Access Score = 70]
  4. I feel about Wreckfest 2 how I recently felt about Space Engineers 2. In that it has an impressively strong frame and wonderful motor, yet really requires some seats and mirror dice and maybe a leather wheel guard to make it truly capable of holding your attention. I like it, and yet I cannot honestly recommend that you buy it. Early access games come in all shapes and sizes. But at the end of the road, one of my jobs (aside from going full throttle on automobile analogies) is to guard your wallet somewhat. Though I like the feeling of Wreckfest 2 in my mitts, I wouldn't shell out 25 quid for the limited hours of bouncy, crashy fun it can grant you. Some view money splashed on something like this as a buy-in cost, an investment, the ultimate act of pre-ordering. I've never been one of those people - when I fork over my lunch money I do want something approaching a game. Wreckfest 2, even with its horsepower, heft, and hellish good looks, doesn't currently offer me more than an evening of messing about. [Early Access Review]
