    I’m not really convinced by Worlds Adrift the MMO. The freewheeling aviation adventure? That I absolutely dig. I can lose days to it. It’s become my happy place, where I can look at pretty islands and not worry about the weird rattling noise that’s coming from my bathroom. I don’t even mind losing my life to the occasional workplace accident. I’m not bemoaning that it’s multiplayer, either. It’s perfectly suited for it, particularly co-op. [Premature Evaluation]

    Worlds Adrift is a sandbox MMO with a single shared world. It's hard to describe the game as it is completely unique, however it does draw similar comparisons to other hard survival games such as Rust, Ark, and Conan. Before that, the basics.

    The game is a steampunk, airship MMO, where you craft your own unique pieced-together airship and take to the skies. The beginning of the game is you learning to build a simple sail ship to get around. You explore islands - landmasses created by the community of players - gathering knowledge to improve the parts you can pick from to build your ship. As you explore more islands, get more knowledge, and cross different weather walls, you refine your ship design, form a crew, and prepare for battle.

    Similar to Rust, the end-game is PvP. There is plenty of exploration, and the floaty cloud-filled world is truly beautiful. In contrast, the PvP is hard and can be brutal, ruthless, and cutthroat, as even pirates who might stop you to take your loot might end up shooting you out of the sky right after. This again is similar to Rust, where you never know how an encounter with another player will turn out. If you've ever played DayZ, Rust, Ark, Conan, etc, you will know what I'm talking about.

    The best thing to do is to find a crew. Bring your friends and get prepared to lose your first few ships in battle. As you unite with other players, you become stronger, as a large crew can bring in more resources, man more cannons, and fend off other ships much more effectively. Although solo play is possible, it generally means being stealthy, small and fast, although there is room to be a thorn in the side of larger groups if you are persistent enough.

    As the world is a physics based, open world sandbox, there is so much creativity that can occur with the end game. From traps being set, to alliances forming to tackle larger groups, and community-driven territory ownership, the game has so many possibilities that most people aren't used to thinking about. Most games hand you the task, hand you the objective, and expect you to follow within the guidelines to complete that task. Worlds Adrift requires you to make your own way, to make your own objective, and to pursue what you set out as a goal.

    As the game is just releasing into Early Access on Steam, there is still a lot on the burner that Bossa Studios is working on. They are keeping to a two-week patch schedule, and the updates and communication from the team are currently top notch. Upcoming features soon after EA launch are working Alliance systems (in-game radio, alliance chat, emblem features, etc) as well as territory control where players can claim islands in game, very similar to EVE or games of old. While the game doesn't have a lot of MMO 'meat' to sink your teeth into, meaning no real PvE content to waste your time on, the real excitement is forming a crew, playing with friends, and making memories with them. The players are the content currently, but down the line the game will get some of that MMORPG feel as they refine the systems and push further down their roadmap.

    Some other features coming are PvE Sky Whales, different weapons, more diverse ship building options, and perhaps other PvE creatures that give your ship and crew a challenge while in the air. If Bossa can combine all these things in the next few months, this is the MMO that gives you nearly everything all the other MMOs are only promising right now.

    Worlds Adrift is also the first game to use SpatialOS for an MMO. It's a multi-server solution to MMO gaming where rather than one server handling all the player interactions, you have many different servers working together. This allows the huge physics-based world to work, where a bit of server lag on one side of the world doesn't have a huge affect on your own experience. With that said, it's new tech and comes with its own bugs and problems which are constantly being ironed out as the game develops.

    I rate this game a 10/10, more for the uncharted territory it has ahead of it than the current gameplay state. It is an amazing game that is worth checking out. The game will be $25 on May 17th on Steam for the basic package, with cosmetics and cosmetic-only packages being a premium.    … Full Review »
