Best expansion! Rares are now little adventures. Side quest have one long story and mechanics. Graphic is beautiful. Dungeons are super interesting.

All of the people giving negative reviews are most likely Classic Andies raging behind their boomer devices or people who are too dumb to learn about the systems. I have completely neglected everything in my life these past few days playing Shadowlands and it was definitely worth it as I had some of the most fun with my friends on WoW in years. Expand

It seems after the giant miss that was Battle for Azeroth where they tried to do a number of different new forms of content that didn't work out, they decided the better strategy was to double down and perfect what worked well. For that I think Blizzard should be commended.

At the end of the day, World of Warcraft is the only super successful MMORPG. Other games have had moderate success, flashes of brilliance, most of them have faded into subtle irrelevance where WOW continues to offer players the best day to day gameplay experience in the genre. They get rewarded with monthly subscriptions for this, so one would expect that they have to substantially add to what's already there to justify the sticker price of the paid expansion content. With that said, they tried that multiple times now with Battle for Azeroth and Warlords of Draenor having multiple new features those expansions we're built around that we're mostly not fun grinds that people resented doing. This I think lays out the needle Blizzard needed to thread this time around, and I think they have in fact threaded it quite masterfully with Shadowlands.

We will get to the one new feature Torghast in a minute, but let's talk about what's substantially new in terms of building what already worked well. Blizzard has updated the interface with some quality of life changes, better directed gameplay for story elements (done through a special notation of campaign quests), improved the "order hall" system to be more dynamic and interesting (now called covenant sanctums), and designed some fresh and fun dungeons and raids that look like they will present every level of player with new and interesting challenges. Additionally they have stripped out many of the the player power grinds that felt like "must do" content in Battle for Azeroth. Most of this stuff is kind of a "choose your adventure" book, where most of it rewards players with cosmetics, currency for upgrading systems in your sanctum, or in some cases the reward is just for the fun of it. This has left some endgame minded players in my inner circle bored with the content because there isn't anything to "push" to get more player power, but I think for the majority of players they will feel refreshed by not always having the feeling that they have to grind something.

If that would have been the only thing they did, this would have been a 5/10 and not worth the price of admission, but we have one giant Tower to deal with first. Torghast is a rouge-lite dungeon generator nested within an endgame zone called the Maw. The maw is cold, dark, and brutal, and borrows a concept from the 5 star wanted system of GTA games to make galivanting about the place a bit thrilling and scary. The systems of Torghast, the Tower of the Damned are tied into activities in the maw in a way that's not opressive and leaves you with the option of only doing one or the other. When you enter the tower, you get a series of choices that feel fun and interesting each time you walk through the portal: which power to take? explore or take the faster route? Fight the big bad elite on this floor or find a way around? All of these things make the tower interesting enough to work through. Along the way you will also get a shop that gives you more interesting choices, and can be upgraded through activities in the maw. If anything is lackluster so far, it's the bosses but in the live game we haven't seen very much of the tower yet, and I expect these will become more interesting the more we climb.

Torghast is also the driving force behind crafting your own legendary equipment which can be customized with the stats you want, on a slot of a choice, with a fun selection of unique powers some old some new. Shadowlands weaves all of these elements together and takes you into the endgame with options, choice, and the freedom to actually play more than one character. While torghast is the only thing that is new, it's a big hit, and combined with the other elements that we're improved creates fun gameplay that so far looks like it will continue to deliver long term as more is unlocked. Shadowlands is a solid 8/10 and is only held back not having very much brand new game elements for the price tag. They took a game that already had great things, built on them and removed the things that made just playing the game more cumbersome and prevented you from playing multiple characters for fun, and for that I think it's worth the price tag.

Shadowlands is a return to form for Blizzard’s Team 2.

Top-notch writing and story, excellent zone pacing and transitions, perfect balance of main story quests and side tasks, and an endgame chock-full of deep systems to enjoy.

The most fun new system WoW has ever introduced is Shadowlands marquis feature called Torghast, Tower of the Damned—a procedurally-generated “rogue-like” dungeon where you gain insane new powers and abilities as you climb consecutive levels of ever-increasing difficulty.

Even if Shadowlands had NO new features, almost every class (and every specialization within those classes) has been tweaked and given back fun abilities and skills that had been removed in previous expansions in the name of simplification. Some abilities are purely utility or damage-focused, while others simply bring consistency from a lore/RPG standpoint (such as all Mage specializations gaining Frostbolt, Arcane Blast, and Fireball; “Yes, I went to Mage School, but I *specialized* in Fire. Of course I know what a Frostbolt is!”).

So the base game is just fun to play. When the classes are enjoyable and unique, it elevates all the content within the game.

Crafting & Gathering Professions are finally a true market force yet again. I got that old-school RPG feeling when I realized just how many gear enchantments, potions, and usable items were available to “min/max” difficult content. Better than that, however, is the fact that many key progression systems rely on various professions, and high-end crafted products require multiple disparate professions’ output, meaning that the market must contend with itself from almost every aspect of the game. No single character can “do it all.” Players must rely on others (it is an MMO, afterall), OR have multiple alts with all of their professions maxed out (not ideal for one’s sanity, but some mad-lads do it anyway).

The graphics are gorgeous, the music is epic and inspiring, the lore is engaging and fascinating, the voice acting is charming, and the new zones are unique and thematically-perfect.

And once you get to max level, the fun has only just begun.

Luckily, unlike the previous two expansions (Legion in 2016 and Battle for Azeroth in 2018), the endgame content is tailor-fit to each player’s goals:

Players who only like PVP can just PVP, and they can finally (once again) target specific earned gear upgrades while remaining competitive with PVE gearing.

Players who love raiding can focus exclusively on raiding (once this first tier begins next week).

Players who just love dungeons can gear up exclusively with Legion’s most impactful new system, Mythic +, where you earn infinitely-harder versions of dungeons and enemy affixes based on your group’s performance in each run, and you get commiserate rewards. The dungeon design is fantastic as usual (there have been the occasional “duds” over the years, but high-quality dungeons and raids are typically a given for the Warcraft team at this point).

Players who love all 3 main endgame gearing paths are rewarded with MUCH faster and specified gear upgrade acquisition than those who only do one form of content.

Players who couldn’t care less about those 3 pillars of competitive endgame progression have LOADS of fun tertiary gameplay to enjoy: Gorgeous new mounts and transmogs (armor and weapon appearances), titles, pets, gold, extreme achievements, and a dearth of open-world systemic upgrades via the new Covenant system, whereby each player chooses one of four themed factions to fight for, represent, and build up their base of operations.

Blizzard ensured that you can enjoy endgame content endlessly without feeling pressure to constantly grind if you don’t want to or don’t have time to. Each player power progression system is inherently limited/capped to specific benchmarks each week, so once you do what you feel like doing, you’re done for the week. Don’t care about a specific kind of content? No need to do it. And if you change your mind, you can catch up on almost everything later when you DO have time or if you suddenly gain an interest in other endgame content. For players who want to stay competitive in endgame combat content (player power for raids, dungeons, and PVP), there’s very little *mandatory* tasks to complete periodically:

    1) Earn as much from Torghast as possible each week, up to a very reasonable limit (for materials to build your own personal Legendary item).

    2) Do each week’s Covenant quests to earn new buffs to your abilities and open world hub.

And that’s pretty much it. The rest is up to you. This has been one of the best launches of an expansion pack that WoW has ever had, and I can’t wait to earn each week’s new story content and upgrades. And I’m insanely excited to jump into the new raid with my guild next week!

    See you in Oribos!

You get something new most every time you ding, it's actually a lot of fun leveling up in the BFA content, at least in my opinion, and when I level an alt, I can choose from any expansion out there to level in.

My wife and I have been having a blast running heroic and mythic dungeons and just stepping into raid content this week. This is no longer a game that demands all of your free time, the classes still feel iconic and the worldbuilding in Shadowlands is a cut above anything I've seen in the decade+ this game has been out.

The systems are great, the zones are amazing, the classes (generally) feel like they're in a good place, the storyline and all that jazz seems decent enough. The raid is fun. This is some of the most fun I've had in wow in... ever
Like with anything, I'll list a few downsides:-
Gearing so far has been heavily on the PVP side of things, with a majority of top players opting to gear up via the vendors than to gear up via other means, which has meant that the m+ community may have seen a major drop off in participants, given that the loot situation in m+ is a bit dire at the moment. So if PVP isn't your thing, prepare to dive into the grim m+ scene...
The M+ dungeon community seems to be as big of a filth swamp as ever. So if you plan to play the game in a casual setting, the M+ wall will hit you pretty hard without your own clique of mates to play with.
Some classes (mine in particular RIP rogues) are in a bit of a grim state compared to most of the other classes in the game, however it does feel like blizz is looking after the bin classes early days.
The alt situation, while much better than BfA is a bit of a grind - although SL gearing alts feels more like a 'fun' grind if that makes sense?
Some people say that the Vault is unrewarding... but for the most part it's been some of the most rewarding content in the game - currently i'm 9/10 heroic progress, and if i had to guess i'd say about 30-40% of my gear has come from the vault. I can see how players would get their hopes up too high, and then blame that on the vault 'being bad' but if you temper your expectations a bit the vault it fine.
otherwise yeah - solid expansion - would highly recommend you give it a shot.

I am fully epic equipped from PvP, from doing BGs and upgrading the blue gear with Honor till epic. Then I've started doing Arenas 2s, and altough PvE playes still have a good advantage cause they get higher ilvl gear from Mythics, I can still enjoy doing 2s.

I have done ONLY 4 normal dungeons since I hit 60, and that is only cause they had zone ending dungeon quests, else I would have not set foot in any dungeon at all.

The PvP system implemented is one of the best that ever existed in WoW, and you can earn gear FROM actually playing PVP, and upgrade it on an ilvl direct proportional with your PvP rating.

The leveling was smooth, with a ton of story and dialogue to take in. Queues were problematic but it shows the popularity of the game right now and I could log in early so they did not affect me too much. Once in the end game, alts can level through an alternate experience which instantly unlocks end-game abilities and skips the main storyline, avoiding forced repetition.

The end-game is still mostly locked (raids, m+, rated PvP, most of Torghast including Legendaries) but what I've seen so far feels good, the early levels of Torghast were fun to go through, the Maw end-game zone feels dangerous, especially when solo, dungeons had lots of interesting mechanics and PvP vendors are back, and actually sell the best PvP gear due to the new PvP trinket set bonus. Professions are very simple and take little time to set up and start crafting good items, although there is a lot of investment in order to be able to craft the best Legendaries, as it should be.

Not to speak of all the treasure / secret / rare / sidequest hunting. World quests are cool to do the first time but quickly get boring, but luckily like the rest of the expansion so far, BARELY ANYTHING FEELS MANDATORY and RNG is at the lowest level in years. There is no war/titan forging anymore, PvP vendors returned and epic BoEs / top-end crafted gear is plentiful and tradeable.

Hopefully the next weeks are even more fun than the first one, with all the extra content that is incoming, looking forward to it!

But if we talk about the new addition - everything went smoothly and without problems - the start also without lags, the plot is interesting and brings a lot of emotions. At the same time, the load on the player has become less, correspondingly more free time (which players will spend on creating alts, lol). The only thing that confused is the division of quests into the main company and just tasks - an interesting idea, although in some situations a problem may arise that your level is not high enough and you have to return to other quests. All in all - a decent start, I hope, a great addition. Expand

The story is pretty good so far after the first week. The new zones are beautiful and a welcome change from the boring landscapes of azeroth that we have grown accustomed to. For once, I can finally say that I love the soundtrack of the game. The level squish was a welcome change. Although it did make for a bland prepatch state of weakness for my main. It felt good to have something to look forward to in my spellbook as I was leveling.

Unfortunately, this expansion carries on the theme of borrowed power that many players have come to detest. Borrowed power is basically an ability or mechanic that will only exist in any one given expansion. Though, they are good! Each class has their own special ability that they can choose from one of four covenants and another signature ability that every player gets when they accept the hospitality of one covenant. You will be introduced to all of these covenants and abilities as you go through the leveling campaign. This system has its negatives for people who really want to explore their class and get the most out of it. But, I won't get into that. Realistically, only ~10% of the population will feel that sting in any significant way. Launch issues were present. Which happens to every major online release. But thats a strike against the company not the game. At least this isn't a single player game that requires an internet connection. Thankfully, I'm on a small server group so I didn't have much trouble logging in. Though the war mode sharding could have been better. I felt as though my group was outnumbered 5 to 1 by alliance so pvp wasn't really going favorably. We ended up turning off war mode. End game content is pretty solid. I enjoy the dungeons for the most part. They seem like a healthy middle ground between that of Legion and BFA. Im excited for when the keystone season begins to figure out which ones I truly love and hate. The Maw is a good idea for an end game zone. I just wish I could mount there! Druids and Worgen have an advantage in this zone since they can naturally move at mounted speed minus 10%. It looks like eventually, we can get a mount that is usable within the Maw. That aside, its pretty fun to go in there and rough up the jailers army and build a relationship with our new friend out there. They also borrowed the Miyazaki mechanic of returning to where you died to recover the zones currency that was lost when you died. Thankfully, you dont lose all of it. I think I lost about 15% of what I had on me when I died. Finally, Torghast, Tower of the Damned. Its a really fun roguelike addition to WoW that is both repetitive and challenging. I fear that it will quickly become a chore, as the only purpose it serves is to gather soul ash, which is used to craft our legendary gear. For the time being, it is incredibly fun. Im hoping they start to add some cosmetic rewards to it.

Typically, every second expansion introduces a new class for players to try. Unfortunately this is the first time we did not get that. Maybe one is in the works, but covid complications prevented it from being ready in time. At least that's what I'm hoping. Thanks to the shadowlands, they could do anything without being world breaking for the game!

I havent found the time to do structured PVP yet, but im sure its the same as always. Major balancing changes need to happen at some point before the season starts. The worst part is how blatantly the mechanics are designed to keep you subscribed for a long time. There exist weekly caps on many things. Take for example, the campaign. This week, we were only able to finish 2/9 chapters of the level 60 campaign. And I need to wait until next week to hit renown 5, capped at 3 this week, to continue my campaign. This is a little lame, as it almost rewards players for joining the game a little bit later since they won't have to wait so long to get everything unlocked. That being said, it does seem like some major features of the game will be locked behind campaign progression. Meaning that catching up an alt may be a bit of a chore. Or, new players may be at a disadvantage to their peers if they join a month or two down the line. My last point. This expansion seems to be extremely alt friendly. Once you finish the introduction, you can choose to skip the leveling campaign, and go straight to joining a covenant and completing world quests and doing dungeons. This is awesome. It seemed like a lot of my friends were able to max a second character in just a few hours. All in all its a solid experience here in the first week. A few critical bugs preventing side quest progression here and there but nothing besides server-side lag has impeded on the main story. Which is good. In my mind, it certainly does not deserve the amount of review bombing its receiving. Be critical when reading some of the worst user reviews :)

The most positive things about SL so fart has been the story , not just the main story , but stories of old enemies that i have killed in previous xpacs, the zones look amazing , yes it is an old engine but they really nailed it, the instances are fun and different with some strat needed. My biggest grips with the game so far and has been for a while i hate been forced into a spec as certain specs are just not cutting it , IE warlocks, even DK's , perhaps most classes, also choosing a covenant, some of the spell binds who get are just useless for certain class specs , and my last gripe far too many escort quests ... geez. no game is perfect and neither is shadowlands , but is no where near as bad as some have said. so now if you will excuse me i have some more story to catch up on :), have fun Expand

I have played every expansion launch since Wrath of the Lich King, and this must be the best expansion launch ever, for a few reasons.
No1: The first launch ever in which I haven't faced any Lag or Bug issues, everything was smooth and the way it was intended.
No2: Blizzard learned their mistakes with non-alt friendly systems, such as essences, corruptions, artifact/azerite powers, etc.

No3: the expansion theme is fresh, authentic with new lore stuff that continue stories that we thought were over.
No4: we have less RNG in gearing systems, for both pvp and pve. Players can once again do all their gearing through pvp. Farming legendaries isn't an issue, as it was in Legion expansion, or other inconvenient systems we had before, such as war/titanforging and corruptions.

Everyone telling this expansion launch is not good, don't really know what they're looking for. They're just criticising a good job from Blizzard after the overall opinion that BfA was bad. They have fixed what players said "made BfA bad", and still players criticise the game.

Honestly don't understand the negative reviews. This is at least as good as Legion. I'm gonna address some of the negative reviews here.

I was a cynical **** going into this. BFA was the lowest point in WoW for me. I didn't quit in WoD because classes were actually fun, BFA though, ye that was a mess. No new class is disappointing, I'll concede that. No new race is laughable

No new class is disappointing, I'll concede that. No new race is laughable considering the amount of new customisation we got. Borrowed power I get, they've been at that since Legion and it does feel bad at the end of the xpac. UI is a non-issue when the game supports addons. I won't comment on server problems, I play on a low pop server and haven't been dc'd once or had to queue. Levelling feels fantastic this time around imo. Then given the levelling revamp, not really sure what the issue is for people here.

Not many features? That's just a straight up lie. Covenants, Torghast, Soulbinds/conduits, legendary crafting, Classic has raid logging, that's about it. Launch did have issues for some, for me it's been smooth as butter. A crap load of content was added, again see features above.

As to Covenants, choice and balance. I was a cynical POS going into this, I picked my Covenant based on power. I'm part of a pretty regular group. We have members that went BIS Covenant and members who went worst because it was one they liked. We have yet to notice any real difference in terms of player power. I'm sure it's there, but it's negligible. This'll probably change a bit once the raid comes out and people start logging. At the very least that'll change community perception towards the "worst" choices. But honestly, I'm fine with it having played it now, it's not nearly the big issue we thought it would be. Currently my biggest concerns are aimed towards soulbinds and changing between them with different specs.

So ye, I'll leave it there as a lot of the other reasons listed are either incomprehensible due to spelling and grammar errors, or just repeating ones already addressed.

TLDR: I honestly think this is at least Legion levels of good. I had zero expectations going into this because of Blizzard over the last number of years but I'm pleasantly surprised. If they can address some of the problems that exist, this could be a very, very good expansion. I look forward to what we have to come. And I have one piece of advice. If you're enjoying yourself and think it's good, stay off forums for a few weeks (including Reddit). People will taint your own opinion with their **** and reading half of these reviews, they're left by people I can only conclude haven't actually bothered playing the game to end game.

There's few daily/weekly chores to do that one has to complete to stay competitive, though the timegating has its own downsides. Covenant abilities aren't as impactful, which can be good or bad. I expected more balance issues.

My only issue with this expansion is the non-WoW feel to its story. The dialogues, writing and so on aren't particularly well-made. Additionally, a lot of old lore feels simply ignored or retconned (Emerald Dream and Ardenweald, wisps as night elf souls, likely Elune and druid lore). Additionally, too much focus is on Sylvanas when that was already the case in BfA and most characters only exist to further -her- story.

Most of the complaints I see in the 0 score reviews just seem like issues to do with laziness or simply outgrowing the MMORPG genre as a whole.

    Отличная работа, Blizzard!
9 баллов чисто за то, что в русской локализации есть серьёзные недочеты в некоторых ВАЖНЫХ квестах.
В остальном отличный игровой опыт как для новичков, так и для закаленных героев.

Amazing job Blizzard. I have had many times where I lost faith in the capabilities of the Studio. But I hope this is a sign of things to come later in the expansion. Classic revived my passion for the game and I hoped that one day I would play retail again. Coming from Classic to this has been fantastic so far. I have played all wow expansions and I’m sure this can be the best one, I will give it 10/10 because 6.1 is to low for this

I created a MetaCritic account solely to review this game after I saw the abysmal (and childish) reviews it was getting. I just hit level 60 and am nearly finished with the Ardenweald story, and I had to stop to write this. I've been playing WoW off and on since 2004, and I felt neutral? about BFA, and went into Shadowlands with low expectations. I am blown away. I've been playing WoW off and on since 2004, and I felt neutral? about BFA, and went into Shadowlands with low expectations. I am blown away. The graphics are incredible, the worlds are immersive, the little treasure hunts are fun (vs previous xpacs where it'd be some amount of "war resources" etc and junk to sell, this is mostly fun pets and unique surprises). The quests alternate between "just pure fun" with a sense of humor and serious story. The cutscenes can be downright "MY EMOTIONS" at times, which I didn't expect at all. I actually stopped playing only a few hours in on release day because I knew this was a game I wanted to savor (and oops I'm max level already, I've been bingeing it since). This might be my favorite expansion of all, which I realize is a big claim. I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far and I hope it's not over too soon. (Will that be my fault for rushing, or will that be evidence of not enough content? Who knows!) I just wanted to give an honest, thoughtful review because I'm really delighted with it and offended by all of these...frankly garbage, immature comments here. MORE LIKE THIS PLEASE, Blizz! :) Expand

Der Release ist gelungen. Probs an Blizzard.

Solid expansion with a lot of things to do. The linear story guidance makes it really easy to understand whats going on which has been a problem for me the past expansions. Torghast is a really awesome and innovative idea for the game and very challenging!

Looks really good, the new start region for all races is very kind and smooth to play.
You can choose many different optical character features on every race.
The developers made the add-on with much love to details. I like it!

I don't really understand the bad reviews on metacritic. Compared to BfA this expansion is a 10+. Great performance at launch, graphics have improved (though the game is still an old one). I love the new mechanics and the story is promising. I hope blizzard Kris up the good work.

Blizzard finally comes with an alt-friendly expansion that brings back the best features of the previous ones. The patch that WoW desperately needed. [Issue#309]

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands certainly manages to capture the same feelings we’ve had since first started playing the game. The leveling experience overhaul, constant sense of progress with rewards, and new campaign stories make Shadowlands a must-have for any avid player.

World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is a return to greatness for the franchise. The content is both accessible and fun for all types of players, and the story actually makes you feel like everything you’re doing is helping to save the Shadowlands. Torghast is one of the best features ever added and makes each experience unique and fun. While there are some issues which can slow down the time it takes to get everything you want, the journey there is still enjoyable.
